[0:00] [Music] [0:00] [Applause] [0:00] [Music] [0:00] [Applause] [0:01] [Music] [0:03] I've been on a songwriting kick lately. [0:06] I've been writing songs. That's been [0:08] like my hobby for the last couple weeks. [0:11] When I was younger, I wrote songs [0:13] constantly. And then when I was less [0:15] younger, I wrote songs all the time. And [0:18] then I kind of like took a step back. [0:20] But now writing a lot of songs, guys. [0:23] And here's what I've discovered. I've [0:25] always known this, but I've like [0:27] re-established it for myself. This is a [0:30] tiny Tuesday [0:36] tip. I've always known that you're [0:39] supposed to leave a lot of space in your [0:41] melody. You're supposed to leave a lot [0:43] of empty space. Everybody knows that. [0:45] You've heard it a thousand times. It's [0:46] not the notes, it's the space between [0:48] the notes. Yeah, great. Okay, you leave [0:50] space. Leave space. Perfect. Even when [0:52] you're thinking, "Okay, I have to leave [0:54] empty space." I bet you're still not [0:57] leaving enough empty space. Listen to [1:00] any of the bands that you like other [1:02] than Arctic Monkeys. Arctic Monkeys [1:04] don't count. He Alex Turner leaves no [1:06] space and he makes it work somehow. But [1:09] everybody else leaves twice as much [1:13] space as you are leaving. So here's my [1:15] tip. When you're writing lyrics and you [1:17] write like blinkity blinky blinky blow [1:20] and then okay, there's going to be a [1:21] little space and then it goes blinky [1:23] blinky blinky blah. Great. And then a [1:26] little bit of space. Blinky blinky [1:27] blinky blue. Little bit of space. Blinky [1:30] blinky blinky ble. Little bit of space. [1:33] Great. Oh man, you're off to such a good [1:35] start. You want to leave so much more [1:37] space than that. So, what you actually [1:40] want to do is go blinky blinky blinky [1:42] blah. Leave a little bit of space. Keep [1:46] leaving space where you thought you were [1:48] going to put the next line. Then blinky [1:52] blinky blah. You put the next line right [1:54] there. Here's what I'm trying to say. [1:56] You're writing out lyrics. I have a [1:57] lyric book around here somewhere. Hang [2:03] on. Okay, look. I've written lyrics [2:07] right here. Right here. There's lyrics. [2:10] And another line, then another line, [2:11] another line. Guys, here's what I'm [2:14] saying. Don't do this first line and [2:17] then have a moment and then go to the [2:18] next line. Do the first line, then leave [2:22] space for an entire another line of [2:25] lyrics, but don't sing anything, and [2:29] then go to the second line of lyrics. [2:32] You're thinking, "Uncle Stewart, this is [2:33] crazy. That's way too much empty space." [2:36] Unless it's Arctic Monkeys or like um [2:39] just like mainstream pop pop pop pop [2:43] song, you want that extra space in [2:45] there. It's going to make your song so [2:48] much cooler. you're going to be way less [2:50] embarrassed to show it to your friends [2:52] and family and uh me. You show show me [2:55] your songs. I want to hear your songs [2:56] that you've written. Um I don't know. [2:59] That's my tip. It's h gosh darn it. I'm [3:02] I like am in the mood to make these tiny [3:05] tips today, but I'm not I'm not feeling [3:08] very tipular. I'm feeling [3:11] just I'm feeling very Steuart today is I [3:15] think the best way to put it. [3:17] [Music]
