[00:02] Sorry. It's fun. >> Oh, that is awesome. Mark 6 versus Mark 7 Golf. What's the difference? A lot of [00:17] them get confused between each other because look at them. They look almost identical, but they're two generations apart. This is a Mark 6 Golf R. That is [00:29] a Mark 7 GTI. And these two cars were the beginnings of Volkswagen's someone call it abandonment. I call it progression away from the beautiful and as much as I miss it. Um gosh, I am [00:48] going to use the word archaic. VR6. Our camera operator just made a face when I called the VR6 archaic. Yes, the VR6 was a fantastic V6 and they both shared the same cylinder head. It makes a wonderful sound. I love that engine. But it was an [01:02] engine design that really couldn't keep up with turbo technology which had exploded in the 201. Suddenly you could have everyday cars pushing crazy boost and be reliable or have automatics that could handle that type of boost in a [01:20] small package. So I'd like to thank my friend who came along here with the Mark 6 Golf. Thank you so much for bringing this. What attracted you I Yes, >> you have the Mark 7. >> Sorry. What attracted you to Volkswagen? [01:35] still a good bit of practicality. So, I was looking at hot hatches and um, you everything else is just trying to imitate that. So, [01:48] >> Um, definitely Ford with the Focus hashbacks. I feel like Mazda is definitely trying to get on that train as well. Um, and I mean, I know Cooper is kind of its own thing because it's a different size, but [02:02] Mini Cooper does sort of exist in its own atmosphere because so much of that vehicle relies on heritage and legend even though [02:17] Volkswagen invented the idea of the hot hatch with the Mark1 GTI. >> And this is the evolution of that. And then this is the evolution of the evolution, the um Golf R. And I wouldn't be doing my job saying that this Golf R [02:33] Buy some limited edition merch and you're automatically entered to win this. I've heard okay some of the promotions for this car said 400 [02:45] horsepower. I have said 350. The fact of the matter is this is an APR stage 2 tune uh with new intake, new injectors, and the almond blasting was done. It's [02:57] pretty much a new engine under here. Can is this theoretically hitting 400 horsepower? And if it is, does that mean it's time for a high performance clutch in one of these things, which isn't the problem with this? Because this is a [03:11] >> Yeah. How do you find the DSG? How does >> Um I really like the DSG. Um compared to responsive. Yeah. >> There's not as much lag I find whenever [03:24] it's shifting gears and um especially in the uh manual mode it has. I know. We do minute when we drive this. >> Is there a lag with the manual mode or [03:37] >> Okay. That'd be interesting if there was a tune on Is there is there a tune on >> Yeah. That would be a thing with a GTI with a [03:52] tune with the DSG. Could that be the this thing in in in a line? Well, uh, internals are almost the same, although the cylinder heads are different on [04:04] these two cars. Well, you know what? Enough talking. Let's take the GTI for a ride. Gosh, I love these seats. >> Yeah, you have to adjust them a bit. Uh, Sorry, I'm small. >> Does any of this need to come down? [04:22] >> I'm here. I don't think it needs to come down. The layout is almost identical >> to the Mark 6. The center console is tilted a little [04:35] bit more close to the driver. The layout on the dash is exactly the same. The only the only difference is on a Golf R, the speedometer is [04:49] they are very bold with their claim cuz the speedometer in the R goes up to 200 mph. I that's not possible. You'd have to have crazy high gearing in sixth and >> Real quick, I'm just going to go like this. Yeah. [05:04] I wonder why the plus and the minus down there. >> I don't know. I guess just for the feel. And then, you know, if you do want to [05:20] put into the manual mode, you just shift this over to the >> Yeah. >> Yeah. That's immediate. Oh, are these different? Yes, these are different [05:35] tires, of course. That's right. You have the stock wheels. tires happen to be on it on the Golf R. They may have done the size down thing [05:47] this to check. Yeah, that is immediate. That shift the upshifts not immediate. Downshifts immediate. Gosh, I I honestly think these these seats are superior to [06:03] well, you paid for that. You paid for that letter. Yeah. >> On the front of the car, so you're going to have seats that grab you and hold you [06:16] and are deep in here. These seats are are meant more for a daily driver and can and to my butt, they feel like they've like they will hold up better. [06:28] >> Uh yeah, it was missing. >> Yeah. >> Uh I've been wanting to get a new one, but uh they're like 50 bucks on Amazon on eBay. I'm like, no, I'm not >> really. [06:43] >> What other fun things can you have besides GTI? That's also three letters, but starts with G >> or ends with I. What? >> Put gay on it. >> Yeah. In in the in the in the same same [06:56] >> The red and the white, I think it is. >> The day I brought this car home, my best you're the one driving it, so it works." >> Yeah. I don't think on a six you get a [07:11] power outlet down here. And I guess these are for tokens or something. You >> right? >> Cuz quarters actually don't fit in there, right? >> Ah, we have a red light up ahead. So, [07:25] this could be a moment of spontaneous acceleration. But you can't Oh, it's time to go. There it is. Oh, traction control kicked in. Oh, there it did it. [07:41] I told you I need new tires. Man, it [snorts] that that's the stock. >> It has a cold air intake which makes it a little >> Ah, there it is. Still though, [07:55] >> it's fun. Oh, that is awesome. The R doesn't do that. [08:08] Even though Even though it also has an aftermarket intake. Huh. Huh. Maybe this thing hangs revs a little bit, but that doesn't make sense. A [08:20] aggressively do that on this road and just see if that that is an amazing sound. I do that all the time and get terrible [08:35] >> Uh I normally get like 25 miles a gallonish. been driving it like a jackass. >> I also do a lot of highway driving, so [08:47] >> Ah, yeah. That is awesome. [09:03] Tight corner. M reverse camera. This is a modern Volkswagen. >> Oh, that's cool. [09:20] There you are. Thank you. [09:33] Right. Already I'm noticing that the Golf R in its need to be fancy does not give you [09:47] the easy to understand three gauges. It's the same everything, but they make you do the uh fan speed with a rocker switch instead. And I don't get the power uh outlet there. I get it there. [10:03] And the auxj is exposed here. And then there's this type of media outlet for your old school iPhone. And then like some weird proprietary >> Yeah. I see what you mean about them kind of. [snorts] [10:19] >> It's weird. You would think like, okay, this is the R. This is the Racing Golf. Why are the seats on this car cushier than they are in the GTI? [10:35] Now, larger turbo and tune car go like this, >> It's like, what's the book? Do [10:52] >> do you have any other impressions of the Golf R from being in it for like two seconds? I mean, it's definitely a lot snappier on the acceleration, that's for of, you know, the natural progression of the car's manufacturing, I will say, um, [11:09] >> Well, it is. Yeah, it is more modern. >> Yeah. >> Um, but this gives you a thing called a CD player. >> It has a CD player. >> Oh, [ __ ] off. Awesome. Wait, what car? [11:22] >> Oh, okay. Excuse me. I thought you had like a 23. a mark. I don't know what. Have you used your CD player? >> I have. I have. Every now and then, I'll uh find some CDs at a thrift store and [11:36] now? >> That is a good question. Unless maybe it's always making it, but you can't hear it over the sound of the [11:54] There's the boost. No, not really. Oh, I'm in too high a gear. That's the thing about the R. The gears are very high. You want this thing to sing, you need to drop it down at least two gears [12:10] in a way that the RS, the G, uh, the Focus RS never had to, cuz that had an extra 300 cc's of displacement working for it. This is a 2 L. So, can I make it go shoot, [12:28] of course, if it's doing it. This also has an aftermarket exhaust, so that's making big boy noises coming out the rear. little bit of, >> right? [12:47] The revs don't really drop off when I when I when I drop it down. When I when I just snap the throttle closed. [13:00] >> What was that guy flashing me for? [laughter] Oh, flashing me because of deer. Oh, little babies. Well, no, those Oh, those [13:12] are worse. Juvenile deer. >> Yeah, those, you know, right after they here, but right after they lose their spots, they're like they're like um eighth grade boys who just got their first shot [13:27] of testosterone. They're going to run out in traffic. I was just in sixth gear shouldn't. The thing that laments me a a bit about [13:40] the Golf R is that and maybe you notice with the GTI, it's so easy to break the law anytime. Yeah. >> The day that I bought my car, I bought off a guy on Facebook Marketplace. Just [13:53] met him at a notary somewhere. Yeah. And on the drive from that notary to a I was just driving my car having fun and a undercover police car was pulling [14:05] pulling up behind me. And my mom was in the passenger seat yelling at me to slow down like, "Why? Why? What did I do?" And she just says, "Look behind you." I see in the mirror all the little antenna bits on top like oh [14:20] >> that's the thing about uh Volkswagen products. are so they're they do not show off their speed in that I hesitate to use this word because it's a word [14:35] that James May used a lot in old Top Gear. They don't pantomime their speed in the way Ford does or Honda does or even Toyota does that you know it's >> No, these are meant not these it's a car that yes works in America, but it's not [14:55] don't I have on this backup >> backup camera. So I get to do it the correct way with my mirrors and my eyeballs. But yeah, these things are [15:08] meant to sit at 140. Well, maybe let's not 150. I think 125 will probably what is that [15:22] >> just go. >> So when you introduce them to the United States like oh I didn't know I was doing triple digits by the end of the on-ramp [15:36] so slow? I think that has to be the line for Volkswagen. Why is everybody else driving so slow? Because these things just rip. [15:50] So, I have to ask which is better. It's a tough call. And I don't want to be accused of bias. Which is better? The the Mark 6 Golf R, the Mark 7 GTI? Both [16:02] of these things are deceptively fast. Yes, I am giving this away. Go to fan of them.com/regularcar reviews. Buy some limited edition merch. You're automatically entered to in win this stealthily fast. A ton of fun hot [16:16] hatch already tuned and the almond blasting is done. Fresh tune on this. New spark plugs, new injectors, and uh new intake. A lot of work was done in done for this to make it so much fun for you. Or is the Mark 7 Golf GTI the [16:34] better car? Oh, no wait. Yeah, we still didn't look at tires. Your tires are 2254018. This is aftermarket wheels and these are 225 [16:49] 4517. So there's more meat on but there's more sidewall in these. That's why this felt a little lighter because these are thinner tires than those over there. But those tires you can get hotter [17:05] and you can also if you happen to hit speed bumps really fast like I do, those will be better for you. I'm I'm always partial to more sidewall cuz I don't care about filling out the wheel wells. This thing has a ferocious [17:20] advantage in this comparison cuz it's manual. [laughter] It's a six-speed manual and that's a DSG. If I could change gear Yeah. Yeah, it would beat it, wouldn't it? But that thing's nice all the time. [17:35] And you're getting 25 miles a gallon. And uh I'm always loading and dumping the turbo in this and I'm getting 19. Your mileage may vary. I know it's the giveaway car, but I I like the Golf R better than the GTI. [17:48] Reviews. Once again, fan of them.com/regularcar some limited edition merch. Giveaways ending soon of this beautiful, beautiful [18:03] 2017. Nope, wait, 2013. That's a 2017. I'm hungry. I want tacos. Have a good night, guys.
