[00:05] Sorry. It's fun. >> Oh, that is awesome. Mark 6 versus Mark 7 Golf. What's the difference? A lot of [00:17] them get confused between each other because look at them. They look almost identical, but they're two generations apart. This is a Mark 6 Golf R. That is [00:29] a Mark 7 GTI. And these two cars were the beginnings of Volkswagen's someone call it abandonment. I call it someone call it abandonment. I call it progression away from the beautiful and [00:44] as much as I miss it. Um gosh, I am going to use the word archaic. VR6. Our camera operator just made a face when I called the VR6 archaic. Yes, the VR6 was a fantastic V6 and they both shared the [00:57] same cylinder head. It makes a wonderful sound. I love that engine. But it was an engine design that really couldn't keep up with turbo technology which had up with turbo technology which had exploded in the 201. Suddenly you could [01:11] have everyday cars pushing crazy boost and be reliable or have automatics that could handle that type of boost in a small package. So I'd like to thank my [01:23] friend who came along here with the Mark 6 Golf. Thank you so much for bringing this. What attracted you I Yes, >> you have the Mark 7. >> Sorry. What attracted you to Volkswagen? >> Uh, I just wanted something that uh had [01:37] still a good bit of practicality. So, I was looking at hot hatches and um, you everything else is just trying to imitate that. So, the Golf these days? >> Um, definitely Ford with the Focus [01:53] I feel like Mazda is definitely trying to get on that train as well. Um, and I mean, I know Cooper is kind of its own thing because it's a different size, but trying to fill the same niche. Yeah, the Mini Cooper does sort of exist in its [02:07] own atmosphere because so much of that vehicle relies on heritage and legend even though Volkswagen invented the idea of the hot [02:19] hatch with the Mark1 GTI. >> And this is the evolution of that. And then this is the evolution of the evolution, the um Golf R. And I wouldn't evolution, the um Golf R. And I wouldn't be doing my job saying that this Golf R [02:33] them.comregularcars. The fact of [02:49] the matter is this is an APR stage 2 tune uh with new intake, new injectors, and the almond blasting was done. It's pretty much a new engine under here. Can is this theoretically hitting 400 horsepower? And if it is, does that mean [03:05] it's time for a high performance clutch in one of these things, which isn't the >> Yes. >> Yeah. How do you find the DSG? How does >> Um I really like the DSG. Um compared to other automatics that I've driven, it [03:20] responsive. Yeah. >> There's not as much lag I find whenever it's shifting gears and um especially in the uh manual mode it has. I know. We do >> When you do, and we'll find out in a minute when we drive this. [03:35] >> Is there a lag with the manual mode or does it immediately Right. Next gear. >> It's pretty quick. >> Okay. That'd be interesting if there was >> Not that I'm aware of. >> Okay. You bought this used? [03:47] >> Yeah. That would be a thing with a GTI with a tune with the DSG. Could that be the this thing in in in a line? Well, uh, a larger turbo than that, but the internals are almost the same, although [04:03] the cylinder heads are different on these two cars. Well, you know what? Enough talking. Let's take the GTI for a ride. Gosh, I love these seats. the forward to back. >> Ah, that's right. [04:17] Sorry, I'm small. >> Does any of this need to come down? come down. >> I'm here. I don't think it needs to come down. The layout is almost identical [04:30] >> to the Mark 6. The center console is tilted a little bit more close to the driver. The layout on the dash is exactly the same. The on the dash is exactly the same. The only the only difference is on a Golf R, [04:44] only the only difference is on a Golf R, the speedometer is they are very bold with their claim cuz the speedometer in the R goes up to 200 the speedometer in the R goes up to 200 mph. I that's not possible. You'd have [04:57] to have crazy high gearing in sixth and in fifth and sixth gear to make that this. Yeah. >> Puts in the sport gear shifting. >> Ooh. I wonder why [05:09] I wonder why the plus and the minus down there. if you have the paddles up here. >> I don't know. I guess just for the feel. put into the manual mode, you just shift this over to the [05:24] anytime you want, right? >> Yeah. different? Yes, these are different tires, of course. That's right. You have [05:37] >> Yes. >> Stock wheels and Well, whatever tires >> Stock wheels and Well, whatever tires tires happen to be on it on the Golf R. They may have done the size down thing with the wheels. I don't know. We'd have [05:49] to go back out and look at the wheels on this to check. Yeah, that is immediate. this to check. Yeah, that is immediate. That shift the upshifts not immediate. Downshifts immediate. Gosh, I I honestly think these these seats are superior to [06:03] because the R wants to let you know, well, you paid for that. You paid for >> On the front of the car, so you're going to have seats that grab you and hold you [06:16] and are deep in here. These seats are are meant more for a daily driver and are meant more for a daily driver and can and to my butt, they feel like >> I don't know if you noticed, mine doesn't even have a badge on the grill. [06:31] >> Yep. >> Uh I've been wanting to get a new one, but uh they're like 50 bucks on Amazon on eBay. I'm like, no, I'm not >> really. >> What other fun things can you have [06:45] besides GTI? That's also three letters, but starts with G >> or ends with I. What? >> Put gay on it. >> Yeah. In in the in the in the same same type face and same coloring. I get it there. And the auxj is exposed here. And then there's this type of media outlet for your old school iPhone. And [10:12] then like some weird proprietary connector. Seats feel different, don't kind of. [snorts] >> They're softer, aren't they? >> It's weird. You would think like, okay, this is the R. This is the Racing Golf. [10:27] this is the R. This is the Racing Golf. Why are the seats on this car cushier Why are the seats on this car cushier than they are in the GTI? Now, larger turbo and tune car go like this, [10:47] >> Yeah. >> It's like, what's the book? >> do you have any other impressions of the Golf R from being in it for like two snappier on the acceleration, that's for [11:00] generational differences just because of, you know, the natural progression of the car's manufacturing, I will say, um, I do like the Mark 7's interior a little >> Yeah. >> Um, but this gives you a thing called a [11:17] >> It has a CD player. >> Oh, [ __ ] off. This is a 2 L. So, can I make it go shoot, [12:31] has an aftermarket exhaust, so that's making making big boy noises coming out the rear. little bit of, >> right? [12:50] The revs don't really drop off when I when I when I drop it down. When I when I just snap the throttle closed. [13:05] [laughter] Oh, flashing me because of deer. Oh, little babies. Well, no, those Oh, those are worse. Juvenile deer. lose their spots. Yeah, >> this we're talking Pennsylvania stuff [13:18] here, but right after they lose their spots, they're like they're like um eighth grade boys who just got their first shot of testosterone. They're going to run out in traffic. I was just in sixth gear [13:31] immediately I'm going a speed I shouldn't. shouldn't. The thing that laments me a a bit about the Golf R is that and maybe you notice with the GTI, [13:45] it's so easy to break the law anytime. Yeah. >> The day that I bought my car, I bought off a guy on Facebook Marketplace. Just met him at a notary somewhere. Yeah. And on the drive from that notary to a [13:58] I was not paying attention to the speed. I was just driving my car having fun and a undercover police car was pulling pulling up behind me. And my mom was in the passenger seat yelling at me to slow down like, "Why? Why? What did I do?" [14:11] And she just says, "Look behind you." I see in the mirror all the little antenna see in the mirror all the little antenna bits on top like oh [14:23] products. are so they're they do not that James May used a lot in old Top Gear. They don't pantomime their speed [14:40] in the way Ford does or Honda does or even Toyota does that you know it's rattling and stuff going on. Mhm. >> No, these are meant not these it's a car [14:53] that yes works in America, but it's not meant to work in America. And also I don't I have on this backup >> backup camera. So I get to do it the correct way with my mirrors and my eyeballs. But yeah, these things are [15:07] eyeballs. But yeah, these things are meant to sit at 140. Well, maybe let's [15:20] is that 125? [15:47] Because these things just rip. So, I have to ask which is better. It's a tough call. And I don't want to be accused of bias. Which is better? The [15:59] the Mark 6 Golf R, the Mark 7 GTI? But those tires you can get hotter and you can also if you happen to hit speed bumps really fast like I do, those will be better for you. [17:13] I'm I'm always partial to more sidewall cuz I don't care about filling out the wheel wells. This thing has a ferocious advantage in this comparison cuz it's manual. [laughter] It's a six-speed manual and that's a DSG. If I [17:28] could change gear Yeah. Yeah, it would beat it, wouldn't it? But that thing's nice all the time. And you're getting 25 miles a gallon. And uh I'm always loading and dumping the turbo in this and I'm getting 19. [17:42] Your mileage may vary.
