# My Mechanic Seized My Rolls-Royce to Pay Bills After Towing Another Horrible Project

> Source: [My Mechanic Seized My Rolls-Royce to Pay Bills After Towing Another Horrible Project](https://youtube.com/watch?v=vtjbKaEWjxo)

## Summary

In this video, Hoovie tows a broken 6,300 lb Cadillac Escalade Hybrid to the Car Wizard's shop using his 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, testing its real-world towing range. He then discovers the Escalade's engine has a collapsed AFM lifter, leading to a costly repair estimate, and unexpectedly ends up selling his Rolls-Royce to cover the bill.

### Key Points

- **Electric Truck Towing Challenge** [00:28] — Hoovie tests his 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV (212 kWh battery, 400 mi estimated range) by towing a 6,300 lb Cadillac Escalade Hybrid on a trailer, the heaviest load he's attempted with an EV.
- **Long Charging Times** [01:38] — The Silverado EV's massive battery takes over 12 hours to charge from 20% to 69% on a Level 2 charger, and some owners report over $100 to fully charge at public stations.
- **Effortless Towing Performance** [03:43] — The electric powertrain makes towing feel effortless; the truck's weight prevents trailer sway. After 40 miles of highway driving at 75 mph, the battery dropped from 69% to 52%, indicating over 200 miles of range under load.
- **Escalade Hybrid Purchase** [05:20] — Hoovie bought the 2008 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Hybrid for $3,900, a 90% discount from its $86,000 MSRP, despite known issues with the hybrid system and active fuel management (AFM).
- **Car Wizard's Diagnosis** [07:42] — The Car Wizard identifies a collapsed AFM lifter on cylinder 7, requiring a full cam and lifter job. The hybrid system complicates access but is otherwise functional.
- **Repair Estimate** [16:53] — The estimate totals $14,500, including $3,500 for cam/lifters, $700 for air struts, plus wheels, tires, and other parts. Hoovie considers it a 'platinum bill' but hopes to save the rare hybrid.
- **Rolls-Royce Sale** [25:49] — Hoovie agrees to sell his broken Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph to the Car Wizard for $7,500 to cover the Escalade repair costs, despite having more invested in it.

### Conclusion

The Silverado EV impresses with its towing range and capability, but the Escalade Hybrid's repair costs exceed its purchase price, leading Hoovie to sell his Rolls-Royce to fund the fix.

## Transcript

>> You Oh, no. >> What? >> Oh, you got a hybrid one of these. >> Isn't that awesome? >> No, it's really not. Actually, >> it's the dumbest hybrid ever made.
>> We got to get, you know, viewer engagement. Back in the garage. And I squirted out. Welcome to Hooy's Garage, the dumbest automotive channel in all of YouTube. And it's that time of year again. Time for an electric truck towing
challenge. this time with my 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, which it should be a slam dunk considering how big the battery is on this thing, but there are some snags. Now, I've done two of these before. One with my Ford Lightning
my Tesla Cybert truck. Those are both gone, and I now have this, the big gone, and I now have this, the big battery 4WT Chevrolet Silverado. 212 kWh battery pack compared to under 100 with the Ford Lightning and 120 with the
with the estimated 400 mi of range that this truck has, it would be plenty to tow this up to the Car Wizards, which is about 40 mi away. But we do have a biggest load I've ever attempted with an electric truck. Before it was a Ford
Model A, probably 2500 lb. The other one, a Delorean, maybe 3,500 lb. This time, it is a 6,300lb very broken Cadillac Slate Hybrid with probably a 1,500 lb trailer. So, a very, very big load. I need to take this up to the car
management in the engine, the cylinder deactivation has taken a dump and the cam is eating itself and the more I drive it, the more damage it will do. practical reason, but the other problem is the very long charging times on the
Silverado EVs. I plugged this in at about 8:00 last night and it's not fully charged. It's been over 12 hours and I think it's at 69%. It was at 20% before. The massive batteries take a really long time to charge. And some owners report
at charging stations that it costs over $100 to fully charge up a Silverado EV, $100 to fully charge up a Silverado EV, which is crazy. But even with 70% charge or 69, very nice, uh, it should have plenty to make it up to the Car Wizards,
I hope. But we see winter performance worse with electric cars. And then towing this big load, I have no idea how much it's going to affect it, but I much it's going to affect it, but I guess we're going to find out right now.
me, it's dwelling on the past and torturing myself with frustration over for my grandmother before she passed away. Or, I'm up all night thinking about that person that scammed me out of $100,000 a few years ago. I was even
still hanging on to a con artist when I was just starting out in the car world as a dealer who sold me three junk cars and almost ruined my business. Now, this was way, way back before YouTube, and nowadays, bad cars make for good
back then, I would get so angry at myself, so frustrated at my failures that I just couldn't get past it. And that is where therapy has helped me, where I don't feel bad about really talking it out with someone outside of

totally effortless in this truck. The electric powertrain doesn't care if you have 10,000 lb of trailer behind it. It's well within the towing capacity of this truck and it feels like there's nothing there. That's the great thing
about electric trucks is it's just so effortless to pull and they're so heavy themselves that the trailer is not going to wag the dog very much and it is very nice in that sense as far as range goes. I guess we'll find out. It's a colder
some other towing challenges I've done with electric trucks. But this big that a lot. But the one thing with the Silverado EV is with this big battery comes a big price. Now this is the base work truck. No frills, vinyl seats,
vinyl floors, no heated seats, nothing fancy. Has air conditioning, that kind of stuff. But the cost sticker nearly $80,000 new. Nobody paid that. This was a rental car and then sold. And that's when I bought it for $37,000.
One year old and almost $50,000 in depreciation. Just unreal electric car depreciation, but just a crazy price to begin with that nobody was going to pay. Similar to the Escalade behind me, it
was $86,000 new for a platinum hybrid edition, a big premium over the stock Escalade. And that was a very goofy, mild hybrid that brought the city MPG up mild hybrid that brought the city MPG up to around 20 from 13. Highway about the
with the batteries, with the transmissions, and in this case, the engine, the active fuel management is making some horrible, horrible noises. the Escalade reasonably because I scored it for a great price. $3,900.
So, if I spend, you know, three or four grand fixing the engine that I'm in an Escalade really, really cheap, 90% off its MSRP. And it is pretty fun to have a giant Escalade that can act like a golf cart. It It's It's very strange, but
we make it up there. But it's already looking pretty good. this five miles, looking pretty good. this five miles, we've only used 1% of the battery. That it's pretty promising so far because we've got about 20 miles, almost all
highway speeds, and we only used about 10% of the battery. So, if this was fully charged, we'd have give or take 200 m of range with a massive, massive load. So, so far, I'm pretty darn impressed with the Silverado EV. But
now, we're on the interstate. So, the speed limit is 75 miles an hour. I'm going to go the speed limit and see if it drops off much more dramatically because why would you go 55 m an hour on
the interstate when it's a 70 75 mph speed limit. You impede traffic at that recommend when it comes to electric towing and it's just not practical. It would take forever for you to get to your destination. So, you're going to go
the speed limit. That's just what you do. Well, I am impressed. I'm having a hard time believing it. 52% battery remaining, which means we use less than 20% to go nearly 40 m to the Car Wizard. So, the range with a massive load is
definitely 200 m or more. Compared to the Silverado EV, 100 miles with this same goes for the Cybert truck. Probably not that much better. So, we have our now we have our next challenge with the Car Wizard. And if this electric hybrid
Escalade is savable. Not the electric part, but the engine part. Oh, this part, but the engine part. Oh, this thing's so mad.
go. Now it's really chugging. So, this hybrid battery system works with an active fuel management that does a cylinder deactivation. So, the V8, the 6 L, becomes a fourcylinder to sip the gas. And that is a very common failure
point. It can nuke the engines, but hopefully not the case with this one. Hopefully it can be saved. Weezard. Hello. >> You Oh, no.
>> Oh, you got a hybrid one of these. >> Isn't that awesome? >> No, it's really not actually. >> It's the dumbest hybrid ever made. >> It really is. And they always break. >> But not only is it an Escalade hybrid,
it is the platinum hybrid, which is even rare. There's probably a few hundred of >> I doubt there's more than a thousand of these in existence. And I found one with >> It's working. >> You don't have to mess with the hybrid
>> Oh, so you're already money ahead there. >> Well, I say that, but you're going to know immediately when I start this thing up what's going on.
>> It sounds like it's not running on all eight cylinders. So, these do have active fuel management. hear it? >> It's not working well.
>> No, it's knocking around in there. So, this is definitely a heads off cam lifters full shebang. >> Yeah. You've done a few of these before, >> Lots of these. Yes. >> But never one with a giant hybrid system
over one side of it. >> Hopefully I don't hopefully I don't get to touch those? >> No, I really don't. Do you? >> Not really. >> Well, she's doing the old mambo, isn't
>> She is dancing in there. Here, I'll turn it off just to keep it from grenading. I keep things from getting worse, hoping that you could save the engine. And the >> It did great. >> Yeah. It's like probably 220 mi of
range, fully charged, towing a 6,300lb Escalade, which is insane. Insane. Well, would know. >> No, I'm not. But this one could be a home run, too, because I bought it for 3,900 bucks.
>> Very cheap. I figured everything would be broken, but the hybrid system seems golf cart mode and all that stuff. It's just the engine, which you would have to deal with anyway on a modern Escalade or Yukon or whatever. So, you're familiar
with it? >> Yes, very much so. But I'm curious if from Chicago. I don't think it's that rusty underneath, but there are a few oil drips as well. So, >> it's a lot of saltiness on there, too.
down, but it'll all clean up. That's the thing about it. It's in really nice thing about it. It's in really nice cosmetic condition. A few issues, but nothing crazy. And being the Platinum, you get the beautiful wood inlay,
heated and cooled cup holders. >> Cup holders. This thing's fancy. >> Very, very fancy. But missing its fancy platinum wheels, missing his third row everything gets stolen off of it in Chicago. And missing a door handle,
>> of course. >> So, that's a thing. The finest plastic >> Mhm. They are very fine. >> But I'm curious what you'll find, I guess, on this lift. Is that all right?
a platinum level, you're going to probably have a platinum bill >> and the in store credit is gone on the Audi, unfortunately. So, >> it is officially it's gone. It's run out >> way through all that. So, this bill I'm
>> way through all that. So, this bill I'm definitely going to feel, man. The Audi, >> Dang. >> That's what your engine, your uh Escalade engine's going to look like here soon. Similar.
>> Wonderful. All right. Well, up we go. >> Yes. improvement in fuel economy. These were 13 in the city without the hybrid, 20 in
the city with it. So, a pretty big difference. Not a big difference in the 6 L, >> but still, why are you getting a hybrid Escalade with a V8 to save the environment? Especially when they had
the big stickers across the bottom that said hybrid to really show off it. It's buying them. >> Well, not really >> during that frenzy. >> It was kind of a failure. Actually, it
wasn't kind of. It was definitely a failure. But let's see if I failed on failure. But let's see if I failed on this one. So, rust. >> Yeah, it's just surface rust. It's not too bad, but definitely a lot of it.
>> Yeah. Not as bad as say that Saab that I had. That was me. That Silverado SS. >> Mhm. That one was bad, too. >> Those are sway bar links. They're plastic.
So, >> yeah. >> Struts are not blown or anything. I don't see See, the rack is electric. It >> Yep. >> I do see a little bit of a leak there,
back. Yes. >> Yeah. >> Might be the filter. Huh. >> There's a two little bolts up here. mount. But if they don't use an oil cooler, they just put a little cap over
it. And this one doesn't have the oil cooler option, but that's a very common >> Okay. And it's getting all over the place. But we're seeing some unique transmission, right? >> Yes. I would not want to take that one
those. >> I guess it's some kind of funky CVT to >> Mhm. But engine wise, front axle wise, it looks very stock Escalade. >> One thing you'll notice here, there's no
>> Oh, yeah. Weird. know. >> Yep. Yep. And I see some high voltage lines up high, but nothing really scary down here. They kept it all sort of
room in the engine bay. >> Do these steps work? >> I don't think so. Probably not. They look pretty crusty on the motor. >> Yeah, that could probably stay off. I don't really need those.
>> Mhm. >> I don't see anything leaking here. >> I don't see anything leaking here. >> Yeah. The transfer case looks dry. >> Interesting. Some kind of a little vacuum pump or a
motor or something there. It has lines going to it. Hoses. >> Oh, there's a rattle. I hear that. That's the That's it right there. >> Is that a clamp or just a piece that
>> It's just a piece that rusted off of the edge of this right here. >> Oh, okay. But it's not leaking. >> No, it's just We can cut that off and >> Awesome. >> That's a beefy drive shaft.
>> Sure is. And >> U-jints look fine. What about >> front here? >> Yeah, those are fine. >> Yeah, suspension feels nice, too. No clunks. Definitely same size giant fuel
>> Yeah, I don't see anything leaking on the differential. The rust is not as bad as I thought it would be. I thought it was bad, but >> No, it's still very usable.
>> Yeah, I couldn't get that strap off. It was kind of stuck in the spring. in the spring itself. >> Yeah, I still have to do some tugging while we got it up in the air. >> I do see your air strut. They're oily
and blown. >> Oh, and I've dealt with that. >> Those are not cheap, >> unfortunately. Not. So, that just added >> The the rubber is cracked and broken on this one, too.
>> And it's been leaking. >> Smoked. And is that the pump for it the ocean. >> Yeah, that doesn't look very good, >> Yeah. Usually, when I work on those systems on these, it's usually pump and
struts, the whole shebang. Great. And it's missing its spare tire. >> Yes, it is. >> Something that once again, Chicago, it's gone. >> Yep. They ganked it from you.
>> Yeah. >> Brakes are they look fine. They like 80% remaining on the life. >> Okay. The shocks definitely sucks, but >> I I think once you get the engine solved and suspension, you'll have a decent
>> I think so. Well, I guess I'll work on yanking this strap out and then meet you >> Yeah. >> And uh we'll get going. >> All right. Much easier with it up in the air to get that strap off. And Wizard
>> is shopping for bling. He's looking for grills. teeth, huh? >> Yeah. I can film my videos on my channel with bling in my mouth. >> Okay. $6,500. But look at the posit.
Only 50% positive feedback. So, people aren't satisfied with their bling grills there, Wizard. >> There's a closeup of it. is it? >> Well, they're supposedly real diamonds.
It's iced out. >> Yeah. No, I'm talking about my estimate. a diamond price. >> Oh, crap. So, she was $3,900. it? >> Oh, yes.
>> Okay. Well, hit me. >> Your cam and lifter job is a 23hour job. >> Wow. Is it harder because of the hybrid stuff? I imagine that's all in the way.
take all the stuff off, and you got to take the radiator and everything out so way out. >> That's going to be 3500 bucks by itself. done that? >> Probably 30.
out here in the country. >> Yeah. they want you should probably go back with a non AFM because they don't break. it on this >> with a hybrid. Yeah. We don't know
and then it's just a normal V8 engine. But >> interesting. Okay. And there's used engines out there. I found one in Oklahoma for like $2,000 that was a reand replacement about 5 years ago, but
more, right? >> Yeah. You'd be four or five grand all in >> Okay. >> We'll get it apart partially and see think we'll be fine with just putting cam lifters in it.
>> Be back in business. Your door handle have to pull it all apart and put the >> Well, that's the nice thing about GM plastic is it? Yeah. $100 to replace. >> 50 bucks for the handle. So, you make fun
it's it's cheap. Yeah. And just as we thought with your rear air ride system, it's not going to be cheap. >> The struts themselves are 3 350 a piece. bucks. >> Okay.
like 14,500 bucks somewhere around in there. >> So that's what takes it over the edge as far as over what I paid for it. Five >> $5,000. Almost enough to get my grill.
>> Oh, you're right. So then I have to find wheels for it because those wheels are ruined and I need to pay the pump. So I I'll be over >> probably. >> But I'm saving uh something that you
just can't find as far as these Escalade Platinum hybrids. You never see one. >> Well, they didn't exist in the first place. So >> yeah. Um >> Okay. Well, I guess let me know when you
have the the covers off to where we can look at the engine and see how bad it the air shocks and all that stuff, if the engine's eating itself, then then >> So, I guess I'll come back when the engine's all torn apart and hopefully
>> Hopefully not. >> All right. Thanks, Wizard. from an Escalade hybrid, >> right? Well, back to the house and still 40% remaining. And I didn't go directly home. I ran some errands. So, basically
behaved like the trailer wasn't even there. Super light. So, that would make sense. But overall, very, very impressed the towing capability of the Silverado the towing capability of the Silverado EV. This is not what I expected and
But I'll just wait for his phone call when he has it apart. We'll go back up and check the thing out. Fingers crossed. So, I'm arriving at the Wizards crossed. So, I'm arriving at the Wizards in my Breaking Bad Cadillac 1979 Deville
used in the TV show. Uh, and it needs some work as well. So, oh, including the some work as well. So, oh, including the horn. The horn doesn't work. Um,
>> I can smell. It smells like a Hoopty Cadillac in here. It has the leaks. It needs the belt. Lone shocks. not nothing serious. I have good news for you though.
for you though. >> Okay, let me park here. >> You've been telling people that you are the danger.
>> Yes. Walter White's last ride from the last episode of Breaking Bad. >> And now it's a hoopian wizard shop. >> It is a hoopt wizard shop. Yes. Huh? >> Yes. It is as good as it can be anyway.
>> Did it heal itself? No, it didn't heal itself. It didn't do the Wolverine >> Okay. So, I see some bits are off. >> Yep. We got the valve cover off. We got these coils off. Everything's out of the
>> Yeah. >> Danielson, check the other side. And >> Danielson, check the other side. And it's fine. But just one cylinder here. Let me see if I can get my light on it. See this?
>> Yeah. Oh, so that has totally collapsed the lifter. Huh. The active fuel management lifter is collapsed. Actually, I have one out of another here's what they look like. They have a spring on top and oil pressure can go
through this port and unlock this portion of it and it just bounces. compressed stage where it's squished all the way down >> And that's when it all lets go. And that's just because of oil gumming it
>> Poor oil changes. Yeah. Not getting scheduled oil changes. And it can also be age, but once these get squished down, then you have this huge gap between the rocker arm and the push rod, and that cylinder doesn't work anymore.
factory recommended oil changes because GM has it going so long, obviously, way GM has it going so long, obviously, way too long. Uh, but we can't just do one right? >> Well, you have to take the heads off
only replace the one after doing all that labor? Yeah, but the other side's a little bit spicier on the hybrids because of all these high voltage lines. >> but uh yeah, >> you know, a little extra challenge
what happens. >> Yeah, start licking them. >> No, I'm not going to lick it. Hell no. >> We got to get, you know, viewer >> Back in the garage and I scored. Oh, yeah. the uh Escalade had its wheels
Chicago and found these 22s on marketplace with Michelins on them to uh correct since it's a platinum. But I got them very cheap for two reasons. Number
chrome finish pretty common on these, but on the outside they look great. They'll clean up. But also, two of the tires had some bad wear on the front as far as an alignment issue. So, I will have to replace two of the tires, but
they are Michelins that are fairly new. So, I feel like that was a pretty good score, but after using the Silverado EV for a bit, I don't think I'm going to hang on to it much longer just because it
things that really annoy me. And one thing is this car just never knows when it's off or when it's on. There's no on and off button with this thing. It just brake and it turns on, which is the same with Tesla. It's pretty smart in a
with Tesla. It's pretty smart in a Tesla. In this, it's not smart. So, I'll passenger in the car that needs heat or air conditioning and it'll just turn off. But sometimes I'll leave and it'll stay running for a good long time. So,
I'll walk away from this truck. It's still on. It's still on. See what I back up to it and it's doing the blind spot thing because it's it's still on.
So, I do really wish this thing had an onoff button. Even in the Cadillacs, like the Cadillac L we had, it had an on-off button with the key. And I get that, but this system, it's just not very smart yet. Maybe there's a software
update or something to fix it, but the thing's still on right now. It's there's nobody in the car. With this work truck package, you give up a lot, including practicality where this doesn't fold down like on the fancy RSTs and such
fold down into the cabin, giving you a very long bed, and you have vinyl seats, vinyl floors, no heated seats, really poverty spec infotainment, everything you've lost out on life because your screen is so much smaller than the frame
that's in it. And then hard, hard plastics everywhere. No big deal. But this thing had originally almost an $80,000 sticker price. If you put these two next to each other, my old 2006 Cadillac Escalade and this, I'm hopping
in the Escalade every single time. So, even if I upgraded to the RST and had all the fancy stuff this 20-year-old Escalade has, it still wouldn't be as comfortable or as cool to me because I guess I'm becoming a dinosaur now. It
guess I'm becoming a dinosaur now. It just feels so much more special. magical time machine. And here's a cool thing. Two bullbars from the 90s, the
Range Rover and the Cadillac Escalade, both ready to push you out of the way with the brush guard. And speaking of Y2K luxury, the car wizard texted me apart the Escalade. Come back up tomorrow because we're going to have the
Which is pretty cool that he's plowing away on it, but also he said he's Saraf, which has been parked at the Car Ninjas for months. He hasn't really gotten to it or messed with it very much yet. But after I This thing is
distracting me because it's turning on again even though I'm like 7 ft away from it. Uh but anyway, the sarafh bricked itself after going to Van Go and the engine bay. I'm not sure what happened, but it's been sitting bricked
for months with some electronic issue after I spent a lot of money sorting the of frustrated with the thing and have plenty of luxury rollers to drive. So tomorrow and drop off these wheels and see the heads off, I can make a deal for
think it was really nice to not pay a wizard bill for 6 months. Well, it's wizard bill for 6 months. Well, it's dueling head jobs here. Jeez, the Audi good dodge on that. And now the heads are off of my Escalade. A lot easier to
>> Oh yeah, a lot easier. And as Danielson got them removed, we're just having more questions and answers. >> Yeah, there's that 6 L V8. And it's huh? >> Yeah, it's been fuel washed. So, well,
not been doing that for like a week or two. It's been probably a year or two. >> I hope not. But, uh, yeah, the heads were off. And you said there was some >> Well, if you look at this cylinder head, it's kind of brown, caramel colored in
>> This one's clean. >> So, this is my dead head, if you will. Right. >> Yeah. That one's been replaced. But if >> Yeah. That one's been replaced. But if we lift this one up,
like it's been sanded. >> It's been skimmed before. >> Somebody's been in here with an angle grinder and just kind of roughed it up. >> Yeah. >> The rest are dirty cuz it was fuel going
in here, but nothing was happening cuz the valves weren't opening or at least before. Yes. >> And they replaced this head for whatever there's more. >> Okay,
>> so we see these lifters are all caramel colored in the center. >> these are brand new, shiny. >> But this is the old head with new >> Mhm. >> And the new head with old lifters,
>> But then the lifters on this side that are new are the ones that failed. >> Yes. >> It doesn't make any sense. Actually, I This is what one should look like. This is off of another vehicle.
