[00:03] working on content creation and today I'm going to look back over that year and decide how we've gone the first thing I'll do is look at my most popular videos and how they went so here is the list of our my most popular videos and
[00:20] right at the top is the YouTuber design review of polar this one has more views than almost all of my other videos combined takes up about 62 percent of combined takes up about 62 percent of all My Views interestingly it is the one
[00:35] of the ones that took me the least amount of time to produce it was more or less off the cuff and just operating off bullet points I am thinking the reason it was so popular is that it was the Right video at the right time then the
[00:50] next one was a more or less a follow-up video talking about the tubers and the history of V singers because there were so many mainstream articles about V
[01:02] tubers which were acting like polar was the first V singer and I wanted to really investigate the long history of it and this one actually had a lot of me going back and looking at history and reading a lot of Articles and
[01:17] documentation on the history of all these YouTubers so that was actually a lot of fun the third one was not about YouTubers at all I think the main pot reason that it's so popular is it just has a really good title how not enough
[01:32] piss almost crippled Australia's economy you have to click on that this one was you have to click on that this one was more deeply researched went off stuff I knew from reading newspaper articles and stuff in the mainstream media but I know
[01:47] most of the rest of the world wouldn't have gotten any of that news so spreading that out beyond my little area was pretty good we go on to headless furries and forbidden knowledge my one about depressed nasagi and this one was
[02:04] another one about talking about how different cultures value different things and I know some people are going to say the reason why it got so much pushback was because it was basically doxing an invasion of privacy however
[02:19] when I looked at the responses it was clear that the responses were Moder modulated through this feeling of a taboo being broken okay let's move down
[02:31] taboo being broken okay let's move down to the RV tubers responsible for twitch's downfall this was another one that was done basically off the cuff and I think it was a bit of out of left field and it's like trying to pick up on
[02:46] field and it's like trying to pick up on a trend I'm not sure if I'm proud of this one I still think I still go by it but I will have to I think this is one we'll have to come back to at some point hey see milacra and simulate furries and
[03:01] fixed points it was one where I imitated a mix of Vsauce and PBS's idea Channel because I missed both of those and I would like to bring that energy back to

[03:27] in my jokes mix in a bit of education so that was pretty fun Da Vinci resolve tutorial how to create fractals infusion somebody asked me how to do this on The
[03:39] DaVinci Resolve subreddit and I thought the best way to explain would be through a tutorial and I'm glad that it is quite popular the next one was about the line
[03:51] and was basically me being pissed off with so many ads for the line and me with so many ads for the line and me clearly knowing why it's so bad in part because of my work in factorio and knowing how Dreadful a linear City can
[04:06] be here the next one was another YouTuber video going over the nine biggest misconceptions about of YouTubers that was again this one was
[04:19] born of irritation and the way that people kept making mistakes about V tubers especially in the mainstream press and I just wanted to get that out there in a convenient manner then the next one is why you should love hash
[04:36] next one is why you should love hash Maps array tries I really love this data structure honestly this is not me putting something on or anything it's a fascinating data structure and I wanted to share my passion for this because my

[06:45] hope to do that because it would fill in a hole that is actually missing from a a hole that is actually missing from a lot of the anime review subculture let's lot of the anime review subculture let's go on to the next slide which is my
[06:59] viewers by geography sometimes a very dangerous graph for bee Troopers to show my largest viewer base is in the United States which makes sense it's a very
[07:11] large English speaking population my next largest viewer base which surprised next largest viewer base which surprised me is Filipinos all the people from the Philippines had a lot of friends from the Philippines when I was growing up I
[07:27] wonder if I should learn a bit of Tagalog to Pander to these people I wonder if I should learn a bit of Tagalog to better serve my Filipino
[07:39] Tagalog to better serve my Filipino viewers next is Indonesian very popular viewers next is Indonesian very popular group of YouTuber fans in Indonesia and then Canadians and people from the United Kingdom which sort of follows on
[07:52] from the United States populations of English-speaking people however English-speaking people however interestingly if we go to city-wide basis the biggest city for viewers is Jakarta perhaps because of the fact that
[08:07] a lot of the Indonesian population is concentrated in the Jakarta area and continuing on the theme of South East Asia got my Singaporean viewers here it's the second largest city of my viewers then New York obviously in
[08:23] viewers then New York obviously in America quasan city which is the second biggest city in the Philippines and sits sort of right next to Manila then Sydney sort of right next to Manila then Sydney which is the I think it's the either the
[08:37] largest or second largest city in Australia so that's where a lot of my Australian viewers come from now gender always a Strife issue I'm slight majority of female viewers but it's actually quite even so just over 40 mile
[08:55] actually quite even so just over 40 mile viewers and a notable number of people who don't if I identify as male or female so that is very heartening here female so that is very heartening here is my viewers by time over the life of
[09:10] my channel you can see it is pretty flat until I get the massive burst of Interest this one was from The Polar from The Polar video and then the vtube uh sorry v-singer history video and then we go down but you'll see that the base
[09:28] level of viewership has increased after that and I really hope to get another really big video like that in the near future we have looked at the videos that
[09:40] were most popular if you've been one of my subscribers for any period of time you know that my videos topics tend to vary wildly when you look for any advice
[09:52] for YouTubers all of them say concentrate on a niche however for my videos whenever I've done something different to what I've done before I always get a good video that performs better so are these people giving bad
[10:08] better so are these people giving bad advice probably not however they miss a advice probably not however they miss a core thing I make better videos when I am enthusiastic about the subject and the things that I am enthusiastic about
[10:20] the things that I am enthusiastic about are so varied so to make good videos for me I have to have a wide variety of Topics in fact I am pretty sure if I niched down and stuck to one topic I would just burn out and none of my
[10:37] videos would function well so my best strategy at this point in time is to keep making a wide variety of videos part of me learning to be a better
[10:49] YouTuber is by reviewing a lot of other people's content not the content of high-end successful YouTubers but looking at new YouTubers people whose mistakes are still very evident and learning from their mistakes to avoid my
[11:06] own mistakes when I look at these people people who are about my size or even smaller I notice some of the things that are very important it is very important are very important it is very important to have a good hook as a YouTuber those
[11:21] first few minutes actually not even minutes first few seconds are the most minutes first few seconds are the most important you need to establish the tension or the narrative in in that few minutes put in a thing that makes people
[11:36] want to keep watching a video there is also a great importance of narrative also a great importance of narrative flow you can't just record something you have to edit it and get it so that each stage flows neatly into the other but
[11:51] knowing that importance doesn't mean I've got good at doing it yet one thing about being aware of something it's another being able to act on that other thing I've noticed by hanging around other YouTubers is most people don't
[12:07] really understand the YouTube algorithm now nobody understands a YouTube algorithm to be quite Frank not even YouTube it's a big black box where data's put in and gets results out and then is mutated and trained and evolved
[12:24] to perform better however people think in terms of a video being good or bad but the YouTube algorithm doesn't think like like that it doesn't actually think in any way a human would understand his thinking it just looks for patterns it
[12:41] doesn't promote good videos it doesn't bury bad videos what it does is notices things like this group of people all enjoyed this particular video this other person is a member of this group so let's recommend this particular video to
[12:57] that person and it detects these groups by people's viewing habits so if you have a video that is pitched very well at a particular group of people it will
[13:09] then get recommended to all of those people however it does this does result in a matter of feedback loops that the more the video gets shown to people and the more people that it sees it the
[13:22] better the information YouTube has to Target that video to people who really appreciate it there is an inherent the bigger you are the easier it is is to the system it isn't like the old system where algorithm would just promote the
[13:39] where algorithm would just promote the most popular video but it is a more complicated thing where the algorithm is better targeting videos that have more better targeting videos that have more views now in one of my first videos
[13:53] where I talked about how I quit my job and started working as a content creator I asked the question did I make a very stupid mistake after a year of doing this I think I can answer it to a certain degree no I did not make a
[14:09] certain degree no I did not make a mistake my mental health is far better than it was a year ago I feel accomplished I feel that I'm doing what accomplished I feel that I'm doing what I should be doing this was a good move I
[14:23] still don't know if it's going to be a financially successful move I estimated it that it would take two years to get to monetarization I am at almost 500 Subs so if it was a linear path I'm halfway there but who knows and I know
[14:40] halfway there but who knows and I know that even 1 000 Subs I need about 100 that even 1 000 Subs I need about 100 000 sub for this to pay enough to justify it hopefully I can still burn through my cash reserves and carefully
