# Polymarket Explained in 5 Minutes (Finally Makes Sense)

> Source: [Polymarket Explained in 5 Minutes (Finally Makes Sense)](https://youtube.com/watch?v=URXns3gZypE)

## Summary

The video explains how Polymarket, a peer-to-peer prediction market platform, works, covering the mechanics of trading event-based shares, the importance of market rules, and strategies for finding value. It also highlights the platform's unique features like live trading and tax benefits, and introduces tools like OddJam for identifying profitable trades.

### Key Points

- **Introduction to Prediction Markets** [00:01] — Polymarket allows trading on real-world event outcomes, such as the 2028 US presidential election or GTA 6 release date. Unlike traditional exchanges, it's peer-to-peer, meaning each trade requires someone to take the opposite side.
- **Advantages for Winning Traders** [00:27] — Polymarket does not limit winning traders, unlike traditional sportsbooks. It's more like trading stocks, and losses can be written off 100% for tax purposes.
- **Example: JD Vance 2028 Election** [00:40] — JD Vance has a 27% chance to win the 2028 presidential election. Buying a 'yes' share at 27 cents would pay $1 if he wins, or $0 if he loses. Buying 'no' at 74 cents works inversely.
- **Order Types** [01:23] — Users can place market orders to buy at the cheapest available price or set limit orders at a predetermined price, which fills when the market reaches that price.
- **Market Rules and Resolution** [01:50] — Each market has clear rules on resolution. For the 2028 election, resolution sources are AP, Fox News, and NBC. If they don't agree by inauguration day (Jan 20, 2029), the market resolves to $0.
- **Polymarket's US App** [02:16] — Polymarket launched a US app for sports trading. Users can switch to 'American' mode for a familiar sportsbook interface, making trades easy.
- **Using OddJam for Value** [02:55] — OddJam's Plus EV tool identifies trades with a mathematical edge. Example: Over 5.5 goals in Jets-Wild game at -113 on Polymarket vs -130 elsewhere, offering better payout.
- **Live Trading** [03:47] — Users can trade in and out of markets live. For example, buy a team at 37 cents, sell at 76 cents if they start winning, or cut losses early instead of holding to zero.
- **Turning Knowledge into Profit** [04:38] — People with expertise in specific subjects can monetize their knowledge by trading on related events. The platform covers politics, pop culture, and sports.

### Conclusion

Polymarket offers a unique, stock-like trading experience on real-world events, with potential tax benefits and no limits on winners. Using tools like OddJam and understanding market rules can help traders find value and manage risk effectively.

## Transcript

you trade on real world event outcomes. Who's going to win the 2028 US presidential election? When is GTA 6 going to be released? Who really knows win the Super Bowl. And this probably isn't something that you're typically
used to. There is no house. This is more peer-to-peer. Somebody has to accept the other side of your trade in order for it to go through. Or when you accept a trade, you are accepting the opposite side of what somebody else thinks is
oftentimes you will find the best payout here on Poly Market. And if you're a winning trader, they don't care that you are winning. You will not get limited using Poly Market as a winning trader. Think of this more like trading stocks.
And oh, by the way, you can actually write off 100% of your losses on Poly Market. For example, you can see here on Poly Market that JD Vance is given a 27% chance to win the presidential election in 2028. That means you could buy one
share for JD Vance to win the election at 27. If you like the no, then you at 27. If you like the no, then you could buy one share at 74. If you are on the yes and do purchase one share for 27 and he ends up winning, that one share
will go from being worth 27 cents to a dollar. If you were on the losing end, say he does not win, but you took yes, it would go from 27 to0. Just like the stock market, you can market buy orders or shares at the cheapest possible price
in how many shares you would like. Or you can also set limit orders where you would actually set a predetermined price. And if the price got cheap enough and lower to that price you predetermined and set, let's say you
wanted it at 23 cents instead of 27 cents. If the market came down, it would then get filled by somebody that is willing to buy the other side of that limit order. Each market has rules that will clearly state how this event will
be resolved. For instance, this market will resolve to the person who wins the 2028 US presidential election. The resolution source for this market is the AP, Fox News, and NBC. If all three sources haven't called the race for the
same candidate by the inauguration date of January 20th, 2029, this market will It's super important that you understand the rules before you place any trades on them. Now, I know this sounds like a lot right now, but it's actually really
to it because prediction markets are going nowhere. And in fact, they are the Market just dropped their US app where you can actually trade on sports and app, they've actually made it really easy for us. If you go to the top right
where you see that little Sense logo and click it, you can click American and now it goes into sport mode where it looks really familiar to what we're used to. It's as easy as this to make a trade on the app. You find what game you want to
place a trade on. You can either click the team you want right now or you can click into it and see a little bit more. Let's just say I like Denver at minus 109. I can click that, type in the amount I want to play it for, and then I
if you actually want to make money trading on Poly Market, you can use a tool like on Odds Jam, the Plus EV tool. Here you can find trades that are going to give you a mathematical edge against other users because they are just simply
so far off from where it should be in the typical market. This is actually a really good example here on OddJam. It is saying for you to take the over of 5 1/2 total goals in the Jets wild game for the NHL here. But why is that? That
is because you are getting minus 113 odds on Poly Market, which means you would get the best possible payout when comparing to the market that has this at average odds of almost minus130. An absolute steal of a trade here on Poly
Market. There is constantly value just like this floating around Poly Market. you guys can check out OddJam. Oh yeah, and if you're into arbitrage, you can actually pair up Ozjam's arbitrage tool and Poly Market and find those
absolute favorite things about prediction markets is the fact that you can actually trade in and out of markets live while these events are happening. Yes, that's right. You can live trade sports events. You can buy a team that
is at 37 cents chance to win. And if they start pulling ahead and winning now, you could sell out at 76 cents and not have to hold to the end of the game just in case they end up losing. You get to decide when you want to secure
profits or risk it and hold to the end. Or even the opposite, if you buy at 37 cents and the team starts to not do good or you're feeling unsure about that trade you placed, you can maybe sell out for a small loss at, let's say, 32 cents
rather than waiting to the end of the game where your 37 cent shares are now worth $0. And even real world events, you can trade up until the event so unique. Being able to trade on world
hobby or that they just know a lot about a specific subject can actually turn that in to profits because they are now able to trade on it. I mean really whether it's politics, pop culture or sports, there is something for everybody
first prediction market content I'm posting here on the channel. So I want to give you guys a little bit of a taste and some education on how they work. If content just like this, or if you have specific questions you want me to answer
