Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers Show. I'm your host,  Paul, and this video we're breaking down lanterns. In Blackest Day, in Darkest Night, heavy spoilers,  jokes are surely going to be laced throughout  
this video as we talk about episode 2. Coming  back after the major cliffhanger of last week,   this entry takes us back to 2016. In it, we see as  Hal and Jon continue to investigate the seemingly   alien invasion of Rushville. However, as the  mystery continues to unfold, both Jon and Hal  
are confronted with the realization that they  could be at the center of a massive conspiracy   centering around Hal's predecessor. Just like with  episode 1, episode 2 is loaded with Easter eggs   and references to the comics. And throughout  this video, we'll be breaking it all down  
and talking about how this entry sets us up for  the rest of the season. If you admire our work,   then please hit the thumbs up. let's get into lentance. Sinestra Hal. Now,  we start this episode in the year of our Lord   2016. Jon is taking a muchneeded nap after the  events of episode 1 until Hal comes in and gives  
him a little wakeup call by dumping a bucket  of water on his head. And right from the off,   the guy is just a [ __ ] I thought Guy Gardner  was bad, but dear me. As a man who's been woken up   by a bucket of water before, this also killed me.  But Hal is ready to get today's training started,  
which will probably also be terrible for Jon.  Jon also asks Hal what the Guardian said about   everything that's going on in Rushville, but he  says he didn't even bother telling them. This   shows once again how Hal is sort of this renegade  cop while Jon wants to follow the proper chain of  
the football field by wanting to tell Sheriff  Kelly about the alien that was still there,   which we saw didn't work out too well. So maybe  Hal has a bigger reason than just being a shitty  
lantern for not wanting to call the Guardians just  yet. If you saw our last video as well, then you   will have seen that we did a theory about Jon's  dad, John Stewart, Senior. We did think he might   be connected to the lanterns and may have been  the original one that was supposed to get Hal's  
place. Huge shout outs to Cull's door 9785 on our  last video as well, who pointed out that Hal keeps   calling John Jr., which I think highlights that  Hal did indeed know his dad. As I've talked about  
in the last couple of videos, I've been playing  Marvel Strike Force and I've been having a lot of   fun building up my roster and checking out the new  content. So, I wanted to give you guys an update   of where I'm at. Since my last video, I've been  making some serious progress. I've been putting  
the new amazing Avengers through their paces, and  Blade has been a great addition to my team. It's   been really fun actually getting to play around  with the team rather than just talking about them   in a breakdown. We're also now in the final part  of the Spider-Man Webs Assemble event, which runs  
until August 27th. If you've been following along,  you'll already know about the Spider-Man Tower   and the new content that's been added through the  event. the ring and telling him to fly. Great training.  Jon is reluctant though and kind of just wants to   focus on the mission because that's the priority.  Also love how Jon puts a ring on his middle finger   and shows it to Hal as a way of flipping him off.  And Hal kind of steps back for a second like,  
"Wait, what? Did you just do what I think you  did?" Hal then proves once again how great   of a teacher he is. And he doesn't give him any  other advice than to just fly. He says how he was   a fighter pilot, so he just thinks of flying and  it happens automatically. So all Jon needs to do  
is focus and think flight. Now that sounds easy  enough. Uh but as we see, Jon struggles to take   off. He lifts his heels off the ground and just  ends up going nowhere. And you may have seen the   fan edit that people thought was real where Jon  farted whilst doing this. And part of me did wish  
it was real. Some men just want to watch the world  burn. And while Jon isn't able to get off the   ground, we then see his intense focus on flight  manifests itself as a bird. This kind of impresses   Hal and he's clearly taken a back when the bird is  still there after Jon takes off the ring. However,  
Hal will never admit that and says the bird is  just a one-time party trick because the ring   is low on power. He then slams this on the trunk  of his car to give it a little extra juice. Uh,   which is kind of like hitting a battery. And it's  also like one of the most powerful weapons in the  
universe. And we see how he treats his stuff. Now,  we will talk more about this in just a bit. Uh,   but it is very, very important, the whole  bird thing. Um, and the reason that HAL looks   so shocked here is because creating a living  construct is not something that every Green  
Lantern can just do. Now, the way it works is the  ring can create anything the wearer can imagine,   and as long as they have the will to bring it into  existence, it will come forth. Because of this,   the construct is only as powerful as the  willpower of the lantern who created it. And it  
can only exist as long as it's being fueled by the  lantern's will, regardless of its appearance. So,   for example, you know, something like a  tank that would be more intricate in design,   but creating a living construct independent of  its creator, like a bird, that would require an  
immense amount of willpower, which Jon did almost  instinctively. This is the power that Hal's been   shown to have in the comics, but it was only after  he got a massive upgrade after creating his own   ring from the willpower of an old manhunter. Hal's  living construct also worked more as an illusion  
rather than an independent construct. And uh if  you want to check that out, Greenland issue 3.   Why I'm bringing that up though is because we  can see that isn't the case here as the bird   flies around on its own without Jon looking at  it. I also feel like this is a good example of  
the difference between Jon and Hal. Hal says he's  a pilot, so things like flying or evading danger   comes naturally to him. Juxtaposing this, Jon is a  soldier who's had to face his problems head-on and   figure out the most practical solution to overcome  his obstacles. Whether in the military or just  
throughout his life, Jon has never been able to  just take off and escape quickly. He's always been   a foot soldier, so it's harder for him to envision  himself flying away from something. And instead,   his thoughts of flight manifest as something  realistic that actually does fly. But right now,  
he's still grounded. And Hal sends him off to his  home in Coast City. This is in order to retrieve   his lantern so he can recharge the ring. He then  hands Jon a plane ticket, which he's already paid   for, showing that even if Jon was able to fly,  he would have still made him travel by plane.  
It's just another [ __ ] errand to mess around  with Jon while Hal screws around Nebraska. And   he also says to make sure to feed Earl, who  we'll meet in just a moment. Beyond that,   he must also take the bird with him and keep it  alive on the journey. He says that if Jon loses  
his concentration, it disappears and he fails.  Also, there's an admitted stretch here, but we can   see Hal is staying in room 16, which could be a  nod to Green Lantern issue 16. There, Jon and Hal  
team up to fight the rogue lantern mo who's been  corrupted by the Red Lantern's Light of Rage. Now,   normally I try and avoid doing stuff like there's  a number there, so it must be a reference to this   cuz often random. But, we do get a Mogo reference  later in the episode, and hey, we're just I want  
to cover all our bases here at Heavy Spoilers.  We then see Hal back at the football field where   he's once again just surveying the scene. He  looks at the scoreboard, the broken fence,   and the blood still left on the field, which were  all things that Jon pointed out last week. This  
made me think that Hal is sort of going through it  in his head and double-checking Jon's work. And he   might even be thinking, "God damn, that kid is  actually pretty good." But this scene also has a   much darker undertone to it as well, given that  we know this is the place that Hal's body will  
be found with him even sitting in the exact  same seat on the bleaches. As Halen continues   his investigation, he becomes interested in the  metal detectors and realizes that he doesn't set   it off when he walks through. How then decides  to further this test by prying the grill of his  
car and taking it through the detector, which also  doesn't set it off, knowing that something doesn't   quite add up here. We then see Hal driving  through the town as he tries to call Sheriff   Kerry. He doesn't answer and then he notices  Rushville is a ghost town, so he hovers up and  
spots everyone's cars at a building opposite the  police station, which is basically where our next   scene takes place. How about before he's able to  fly on over his ring then dies. Also, I couldn't   find out who voices the ring in the credits.  Uh, but it did sort of sound like James Ortiz,  
who recently did the robotic voice for Rocky and  Project Hail Mary, but that is just a guess. This   ring will soon run out of charge. My first thought  was that it sounds like Kit from Nightrider, but   that would be insane cuz William Daniels is like  90. They're going to make him do this till he's  
90. And hey, Hollywood will never let you retire.  But Haren crashes the town's meeting where they   were obviously talking about him. He also notices  another metal detector that doesn't go off as he   enters the building. And despite Sheriff Carrie  telling Hal to politely [ __ ] off, he decides  
to stick around and find a seat. I love how brash  and direct that Hal is as well. And how he chooses   the most awkward seat possible, even though you  can see there's an open seat right at the front   of Kerry. Billy Min then creeps in to tell Hal  that his charges have been dropped and that he's  
free to go home, which is not so subtle. Yeah, you  get leave, please. However, Hal is more concerned   with how Billy's daddy knew who the aliens were  on the football field and how they were able to   identify and kill them. This causes Billy to  kind of scramble until Carrie interrupts them  
for continuing to disrupt the meeting. Hal also  shoots a shot with Carrie again right in front of   Billy when she calls out honey and Hal responds,  which I respect. Also, I love how annoyed Sheriff   Kerry is by Hal with her grabbing the mic super  close and saying the meeting will take as long  
as it takes. Now, we know from the events of  last week that Sheriff Kerry, at least stays in   touch with Jon after the events of 2016. So, I'm  very curious to see how this dynamic between them   shifts throughout the series. She may even be an  alien disguised as a human. And I'm I'm going to  
say it. We're all thinking it. Noah is an alien  as well. But now, I did notice how throughout   the episode that they kept referring to the big  bad as he and um little trick in screenwriting   for you guys there. uh if you're doubling down  on something to reveal a twist or something,  
normally you're like you keep saying the gender  over and over again if the gender is different.   So, the fact they kept doing that, kept saying  he all the time, assuming the bloody gender,   uh that did make me wonder if the uh the identity  of the alien was going to be revealed to be a  
woman, and it might even be Makin's wife. But  we have another off-the-wall theory for that   instead that you you want to sit around for cuz  it it does seem actually like it makes sense.   Also want to point out that we can see the town  meeting is being held at the Legion Post 161.  
But I want to point this out because it may be a  subtle reference to a character called Legion from   the Green Lantern comics in that the Green Lantern  cause discovered an aggressive race of insects on   the planet Chick and the Latin stopped them from  spreading throughout the galaxy. This then forced  
them to try and merge into a hive mine using a new  mechanical body and they named themselves Legion.   Now, why I'm bringing this up is because Legion  was actually the ones responsible for Abinser's   death in Green Lantern's original origin story,  Pre-Infinite Crisis. That happened after Legion  
swore revenge on the lanterns and it managed to  kill the lands of space sector 2815, 2816, and   2817. They then encountered Abins, but they were  unable to harm Legion due to its yellow coloring,   which forced Abinser to escape to Earth. Here,  the ring then chose Hal Jordan as his successor.  
However, like I said, this was recconed after  Infinite Crisis with Abinser's death being caused   by the Red Lantern atrocities, who we will also  talk more about later, and I do think they're   teasing him as well. Legion was never seen again.  Um, and I'm not sure if that was intentional,  
but regardless, it's a nice nod to an important  character in Hal's history. Now, as Jon arrives   at Hal's place in Coast City, he calls Hal because  he can't find the key. We then see that Hal lives   in a giant mansion, which makes the fact that he  hides his key in a fake rock that much funnier.  
Hal's joke about the rock having either a smiley  face or a frown could also be a subtle reference   to the red lantern Zillia socks and his Green  Lantern counterpart Galia said they're basically   giant heads with limbs and Zelius pretty much  looks like a boulder with teeth. However,  
Hal admits to Jon that he got the house for free  after saving some rich guy's kid and we can see   various pictures of him with powerful people such  as the Pope, former US President George W. Bush   and the cast of Harry Potter, which is quite funny  and explains why Hal asked the alien suspect about  
Hogwarts in the last episode. And here's the full  picture on screen right now if you want to see it.   As Jon goes through the house, you also get Hal  going through the morg, which sort of creates a   parallel between the two. We then get some penis  h because it's HBO and legally they have to have  
nudity in every single show. And Jon also comes  across something phallic shaped as well. But   beyond that, we have him mirroring Hal's steps and  he will literally be following in his footsteps.   discover that Hal doesn't really stay here that  often. And I feel like this is meant to parallel  
Carrie's line in the last episode about how Hal is  very lonely and no one cares about him and nobody   cares about him. He's not [ __ ] fearless.  He's lonely. Looks like she was pretty spot  
on as well as the only thing he really has is a  mattress and his Harry Potter picture of course   which isn't even hung up. However, we don't see  any photos of Hal with his family or friends and   instead it's simply him meeting famous people.  In the 60-minute segment, he talked about how  
losing a parent is the worst thing that can  ever happen to you. And I think since then,   he's decided to shut himself off to avoid the  pain. I think this line also connected with Jon   as potentially he lost his mother as well. As  Hal is dragging the alien body out of the morg,  
Jon then finds Hal's closet where he keeps a  lantern. But first, he stops to check out Hal's   Green Lantern suits. Can also see his little eye  mask sitting on the table behind Jon. And we then   get some more foreshadowing as Jon puts the suit  up to himself in the mirror and imagines himself  
as an official Green Lantern. can see just how  much it means to him with how he handles it so   gently when taking out of the closet and almost  looks at it in awe. Just shows how much respect he   has for the job. And it's like a great parallel to  how the young John was mesmerized by seeing Hal on  
TV. He even sneakily asks Hal if he wants to bring  it just in case. And it's clear that he's enamored   with seeing it in real life. Having a physical  suit is also somewhat of a change from the comics   is there. It's manifested by the ring and it's not  like an actual piece of fabric which is probably  
why we see Hal has three different versions of  the same suit cuz you know washing them h it's   not going to be easy and I doubt he's doing it  regularly. We also get a funny line from Hal   about how hard it is to take a piss when you're  wearing the suit. Teach me how someone takes a  
piss in one of those goddamn things. Which a lot  of actors have said was the hardest thing about   wearing supersuits. What's your advice to him  slipping into that suit? Oh, same as for Ben. Just   you want some clothes that look great on you that  you can take a piss in as well, then why not check

summer where the more you get, the more you save.  As Halen hauls off the alien body to his car,   Jon finds the box containing the lantern battery,  which leads to a pocket dimension. In the comics,   hide them anywhere. And Hal originally kept it  in his locker at Ferris Air Force Base. However,  
the Green Lantern ring is also sort of its own  pocket dimension within itself with Steel telling   John Stewart and Green Lantern War Journal issue  4 that the ring is a pocket dimension governed by   the mind instead of the laws of physics. Pocket  dimensions have of course also appeared in the  
DCU before and I like that they're this constant  thing throughout a lot of the projects. However,   to access a dimension, Jon needs a passcode and  Hal says the phrase over the phone which is Moo   doesn't socialize. Again, this is a reference to  the Green Lantern Mo who was tasked with guiding  
rings to a new sentient being when a host dies.  Moo first appeared in the backstory for Green   Lantern 188 titled Mo Doesn't Socialize by Alan  Moore. But why doesn't he socialize, Paul? Well,   thanks for asking. Uh, but the reason that he  doesn't socialize is that he's actually a sentient  
planet and he's unable to attend Green Lantern  meetings because his gravitational pull would rip   apart everything that it got close to. The issue  is also where Jon reveals his true identity to the   public after officially becoming Green Lantern.  So, having that be the password used for Jon,  
it feels quite fitting as Jon reaches into the  box to find the lantern, we then see the pocket   universe as a black empty void that goes on  forever. And while Jon is able to find it   pretty easily, notice how the little bird flies  in the box when it first opens, almost as if it's  
leading the way. The lantern battery is a source  of the lantern's powers. So, it makes sense that   a construct would be instinctively drawn to the  battery. Sort of like how canaries used to detect   dangerous parts of a coal mine. However, this also  shows how strong of a construct that the bird is,  
as it leads Jon to the battery without him even  being aware that he's doing it. We can also see   Jon showing the same level of respect and awe  to the lantern as it's one of the most powerful   objects in the universe as so he probably wants  to handle it with care and I can imagine Hal just  
smacks it about and stuff. With the Latin secured,  we then meet Hal's mysterious pet Earl who turns   out to be an alien plant. Though it seems vicious  at first, it's actually pretty sweet and just   chows down as Jon shoots the [ __ ] with him. Jon  also brings up how burgers used to be his thing,  
too. Hamburgers used to be my thing, too. Now,  this is a nice little nod to how his dad took   him for a burger after almost blowing his head off  last week. Yay, some father and son time. Also, I   love how Jon is trying to connect with Earl here,  as both of them are clearly neglected by Hal.  
Earl is also a super deep cut reference to one of  Hal Jordan's earliest sidekicks, Iddy. This was a   little starfish planned alien that Hal picked up  in 1959's The Flash 238. Al just sort of took it   everywhere with him for a while and it helped him  out on his adventures until Eddie randomly died  
in Green Lantern 104 which rest in peace Eddie.  We then cut back to Halen Rushville as he arrives   at the football field with his car full of dead  bodies which kind of killed me that he just kept   dragging them around. He then realizes that these  set off the metal detectors and also notices a  
little camera watching him from the corner. Now  able to prove how Megan knew who to target at   the game, Hal starts to head towards the ranch and  this is when he's pulled over by the sheriff. She   tells him that it's a very, very, very bad idea  to confront Makin and that she already knows all  
about the detectives, which I get that Carrie  hates Hal, but she would have saved herself a   lot of trouble if she just told Hal this from  the beginning. However, Carrie decides to go   with Hal after he asks what side she's really  on. She stipulates to let her do the talking,  
but once at the ranch, Hal, of course, can't keep  his mouth shut. The god then tries to get them to   leave, which is when Megan rides in on his horse.  Yeehaw! I'll give me a yee-haw. However, Min isn't  
interested in being grill buds with Hal anymore,  and he tells him to get the hell out of his town,   and he even has a Kevin Feige style sniper waiting  in case he doesn't back down. Hal then tries to   question him about the alien detectors, saying  that he's been all over the galaxy and has never  
seen something so sophisticated. He says the  detectors were a gift from his mysterious boss,   but can't say anything else because of the NDA.  Hal also asks if Makin's boss is even real or   if it's a Is he even real or is just some Kaiser  Soi situation? This is of course a reference to  
the 1990 film The Usual Suspects and their Kevin  Spacy's character Roger Kint helps the cops in   their investigation of a crime lord named Kaiser  Sosi but by the spoiler alert. Well, yeah, we   are going to spoil it. It's 1995. At the end, it's  revealed that they're actually the same character,  
the same person. Spoilers for that movie. It's  over 31 years old at this point. But the pair then   argue with him, calling Makin's bluff about the  shooting, while Makin also does the same thing to   him. He then flashes his ring and says he can just  stop the bullet, which we know is not true because  
it's dead before Hal can even finish the sentence.  He then gets shot. And I know these are the bad   guys, but Hal did kind of deserve that one.  You can also see when the camera zooms out that   there's a sign above the Min property that reads,  "Study the past." This plays into Makin's obvious  
obsession with history and colonization, and it's  just a nice little nice little bit of set design.   Meanwhile, as Jon's leaving Hal's mansion, he gets  jumped by three dudes who take him hostage. We get   a nice little action scene that leads to a highway  and also get some of Aaron Pierre running again,  
which he is a fantastic runner. We know that  from episode one. My name is John Stewart and   I am the fastest Green Lantern alive. There's  also the baddy showing how powerful that they   are. And we get a whoosh sound effect that  you often get with a superhero landing.
We then see Jon waking up surrounded by the  goons and their boss. Now though we don't get   his name here, the credits do list him as Antan.  He apologizes to Jon for the violence it took to   get him there and asks how Hal's able to project  the construct when he's so far away. He's shocked  
to learn though that this is Jon's and it just  highlights how strong his will is. And Tan then   reveals the reason they took Jon is to find out  what he knows about the Manhunters. No, I tied you   up to ask about manhunters, which he says super  dramatically. air, but I do think it might be a  
misdirect because of the way they talk about  them um and build them up. I do wonder if the   surviving one is going to turn out to be someone  who just wants to lie low and that they might not   be the threat that they've been built up as being  kind of like um what they did with the scrolls in  
the MCU. However, Antan thinks Jon is just playing  dumb, saying that it's hard to believe he doesn't   know anything about the Manhunters given his  proximity to Hal Jordan, which Jon clarifies   that by proximity he means closeness and that  obviously human isn't their first language because  
he's nowhere near close with Jordan. Also love  how this sort of parallels Hal's interrogation   with the alien suspect last week, except this  time Jon's in the hot seat. But last week,   the guy's ignorance of Harry Potter completely  blew his cover. But here, John's able to deduce  
these people are aliens from just one slip up.  And may I started questioning myself as well, like   I say proximity a lot, too. Heavy spoilers as an  alien. I do think he should have double checked by   asking if he knows Neville Longbottom, but yeah,  these guys aren't human. John then says they're  
about to torture a guy who doesn't know anything,  but Antan assures him they don't want to torture   him. They want to recruit him. He says there's  no time for subtlety and that one of the most   dangerous beings to ever exist knows it's been  found and is preparing its brutal response. He  
then asks if Jon really thinks the Green Lanterns  came first. Realizing that Jon really doesn't know   what's going on, the alien boss says this is  actually a good thing because he doesn't need   to change Jon's mind simply just to enlighten him.  We then get the rundown from Antan that there was  
a time of chaos in the galaxy until the Manhunters  came on the scene. They were mysterious synthetic   beings able to take the form of any species and  embed themselves within the society. Able to build   technology far beyond the planets they inhabited.  The manhunters carried out their own form of  
brutal justice that destroyed entire planets until  they mysteriously disappeared. However, the boss   says that one of the manhunters stayed behind  and quietly orchestrated a holocaust on their   home planet. He asks if Jon has ever been betrayed  by someone he loves and that if he has, then he'll  
understand when he experiences what the manhunters  did to them. We then see the alien goons loading   up what looks to be a laser gun and throwing Jon  on the ground before stabbing him with it in the   neck. This then makes him scream in pain and  we see the gun flooding his brain with what I'm  
assuming are brutal images of the alien genocide  that Anttown was just talking about and definitely   not pictures of Ryan Arie which would have sent  me over the edge. But yeah, we've just had a lot   of stuff thrown at us at once. Whoa, what? Stop  throwing your stuff. So, let's take a moment to  
talk about these manhunters. Now, in the comics,  the Manhunters were the Guardians first attempt at   creating a galactic space core. They built a race  of alien androids that they called the Manhunters,   who were meant to be the ultimate force of good  in the universe. They then gave them stun guns  
powered by the Green Lantern's power battery and  sent them off across the universe with the oath,   "No evil escapes the Manhunters." Now, while the  Manhunters fulfilled their duties for almost a   millennium, their programming was altered by  a rogue guardian known as Croner. This led to  
them developing a narrower definition of evil in  which crime is a result of emotional responses.   In the end, this caused them to realize that  the only logical solution to stopping crime is   to kill all organic life. That's one way to do  it. The oath was then changed to no man escapes  
the manhunters. They then declared war on the  guardians to take their power for themselves.   This didn't go well for them, though, and when  they tried to claim the central power battery,   it destroyed all their stun guns and lantern  batteries throughout the universe, which left  
them powerless. The Guardians then banished them  to live on whatever planet they'd been recently   inhabiting, and they believed that without the  powers of the Central Battery, they would never be   a threat again. However, over time, the Manhunters  began to regroup and discover that the Guardians  
had replaced them with the Green Lanterns. They  then vowed to get their revenge, and this would   come at destroying the Green Lantern Corps.  The manhunters then quietly continued dealing   out their special brand of justice over eons  as they regained their numbers. Eventually,  
they made their way to Earth during the Middle  Ages and discovered it had been abandoned by the   Guardians and had no Green Lantern to protect it,  which I always thought this line in Justice League   was a little bit of a reference to. No protectors  here, no lanterns, no Kryptonium. But this made  
it the perfect place for the manhunters to hide  themselves until they became powerful enough to   take on the lanterns. Interesting uh comic history  fact as well. Yeah, the manhunter was originally   a character created by Jack Kirby in 1975's first  special issue 5. There there was a man named Mark  
Shaw who discovered an ancient society called the  Manhunter cult. And after joining them, he then   took on the mantle of Manhunter and started to  fight crime. It wasn't until 1977's Justice League   140 that Shaw returned as the manhunter to arrest  Hal after he accidentally blew up a planet. The  
secret origin with the Guardians was then revealed  in issue 141. Now, I think this mind control gun   that Antan is using on Jon here might actually be  one of the Manhunter's original stun guns. While   the ethics of it are debated amongst the core, the  lantern ring is also capable of altering someone's  
mind and it can project information into the mind  of others. So, if this is one of the Manhunter   stun guns, it seems to have just a little juice  left or Anton was somehow able to recreate the   power somehow. You also notice that the light on  the gun is orange and not green. In the comics,  
not familiar with Green Lantern law, the powers  of the various lanterns come from energy created   by the emotions of sentient beings. This is called  the emotional electromagnetic spectrum. Green is  
powered by will, red by rage, yellow by fear,  and so on and so on. Not really sure how greed   fits into it and how they're projecting these  images into Jon's head, but given everything in   the Green Lantern world and how it revolves around  colors. I couldn't help but go down this road of  
reaching. But this leads us into our next part  of Antan's little speech about how his world was   destroyed by the manhunters. He said this resulted  in the death of an entire species. In the comics,   this event was known as the massacre of sector  666 or 666. You you you get the subtext there,  
mate. During 2008 Green Lantern issue 33, it was  revealed the Manhunters went on a full-on murder   spree before being stopped by the Guardians.  They killed all sentient life in the entire   sector and left only five remaining survivors.  After the Manhunters were exiled, the Guardians  
then refused to accept their failure and basically  covered up their crimes. Oops. Better delete that.   basically basically greenwashed the entire thing.  However, the five beings who survived the massacre  
came together to form a group known as the five  inversions led by being known as Atrocidus. They   swore revenge on the Guardians of the Universe  for creating the Manhunters. Over the years,   Atrocidus became so consumed with rage that it got  to the point that it physically manifested into  
a red lantern. He then used this to bludgeon one  of his fellow inversions to death and discovered   the red spectrum. Atrocidus then killed the rest  of the inversions and used their blood to create   a red central power battery and also the red  lantern rings. Now based on what Antan says here,  
I think it's pretty clear that the massacre of  sector 666 is what the character is talking about   and it means that he's closely he might be or  could be connected to Atrocities. My first thought   was that this little crew of his were the other  five inversions. But we can see that there's six  
of them, including Antan. We also have the four  of the members who were killed in Rushville. So,   I am thinking that these might be the members  of his Red Lantern core, which could also be why   Antan says they want to recruit him. The gun could  also basically transfer atrocities rage into Jon,  
and this would expose him to the Red Spectrum and  would allow him to become a Red Lantern. After   getting his mind blown by the horror show, they  then pick Jon up and Antan tells him the effects   of their collective loss will remain in him for  some time. Antan then continues on with his story,  
saying that eventually the Guardians became aware  of the Manhunter's crimes and sent a Green Lantern   to arrest him, which also apparently guaranteed  them he would be executed. However, Antan and what   was left of his people thought this was [ __ ] and  believed the manhunter was still alive somewhere.  
So, they spent years searching for it until  they discovered a radiation signal specific   to the manhunters on Earth coming from good old  Rushville. And like I've been saying, Noah is the   Manhunter. However, since the Manhunter is able to  disguise itself as human, they had to send a recon  
team to locate it, which obviously we know ended  pretty badly and they were shot up by Makin's   crew. However, after they were killed, who just  so happened to show up even not an hour later, but   Hal Jordan. This has led Antan to believe that the  lanterns are protecting the manhunter. And they  
basically want Jon to be their inside man so he  can identify this figure. They have an ultimatum   that if he can't find the manhunter in the next 48  hours, they'll have to resort to drastic measures   and blow Rushville to high hell. So yeah, Jon is  pretty screwed. And considering we've seen what  
the place looks like in 2026, I'm not sure if it  works out well for them. if, right? And it's a big   if, but yeah, if our Red Lantern theory turns out  to be true as well, I think it would be a really   cool way to test Jon throughout the series. This  would present him with a choice to give into his  
anger and resentment, which we can see clearly  has for Val, or if his will can overcome it. Red   or green pill, Jon, you decide. There's still a  lot about Jon's backstory that we don't quite know   yet, but I do imagine based on what we saw of his  childhood that there's a lot of trauma to unpack  
there, especially regarding Hal Jordan and how  he was found by the Guardians. One last thing as   well, because I know we've gone on a massive Green  Lantern law dump there, but if it wasn't obvious,   the lantern Antan is likely talking about, I  think, has to be Avinc. As we learned last week,  
Rushville is where Hal found Avenern claimed  the ring, which also plays perfectly into our   Red Lantern theory. As we touched upon earlier as  well, the Infinite Crisis event retconed Abinser's   origin with Legion and instead had it at the hands  of Atrocidus. The villain was captured by Abinser,  
but he was able to instill fear in him, weaken  his willpower, and this then gave Atrocidus a   chance to escape. He mortally wounded him and left  him for dead on Earth. And if Antan is Atrocidus,   this would be a great way to test how alongside  Jon. We could then learn the truth about Abinser's  
death and the Guardian's role in the death of the  entire sector and how they've unknowingly played a   part in their cover up. Hal even said last episode  that Abinser's crash never sat right with him and   that he believes it wasn't an accident. That's why  my gut always told me that crash was no accident.  
Back in Rushville, we then see Hal waking up in  hospital after being shot by Min. And Carrie then   asks about Sinestro. Why did you say that name?  Yeah, how h how does she know that name? She's   not authorized to talk about it. However, Carrie  says Hal talks about him a lot in his sleep and  
pulls Sinestro up on Google. She then gives a bit  of backstory, saying Sinestro was a Greenland who   attempted a coup and killed a guardian before  being stopped by Hal, which all jokes aside,   yeah, I'm curious as to where Carrie looked  up this information. I don't know if Google  
has access to Greenland history, and it would be  a bit weird if you could just go and look this   up. Does also make me wonder a couple things  about Carrie. And as I'm sure you've guessed,   I've still got my suspicions around her. Now,  if you're unfamiliar with Green Lantern law,  
um Sinestro is basically Hal Jordan's arch nemesis  in the comics. Sinestro was once considered the   greatest of all Green Lanterns, and he kept his  home planet Kuraga on sector 1417, completely   free of crime under his protection. Trained by  Aban Sir, Sinestro became Hal Jordan's mentor,  
and the two quickly bonded. Sinestro became sort  of a father figure to Hal as he learned how to   control his anger and mastered the ring. They  even got in trouble with the Guardians for being   two good old friends, and they were two guys that  basically always hit the thumbs up and shared each  
other's videos. However, back on his home planet,  Sinestro became obsessed with making it a paradise   free of all crime and proving the true potential  of the Green Lantern's power. This turned him into   a dictator and he ruled through fear. And when  Hal became aware of what Sinestro was doing,  
he called the Guardians for backup. Sinestro was  then arrested, stripped of his Green Lantern ring,   and banished to an anti-atter universe. How about  during his imprisonment, Sinestro swore revenge on   the Guardians and Hal Jordan for their betrayal.  And for the first time in his life, he felt fear.  
With the help of weapons smiths from the planet  Quad, Sinestro manifested his fear into a new   yellow power ring and became the first yellow  lantern. He then harnessed the power of fear   and the yellow spectrum of power, which is the  opposing power of will and why Green Lantern rings  
don't work on things that are yellow. Sinestro  has done lots of awful stuff in the comics,   though. Um, but I couldn't find an instance of him  murdering one of the guardians as Kerry mentions   here. So, I am interested to see how they'll  change things up. Um, and basically alter  
Sinestro and House history together. Also, since  we're talking about Sinestro, where me and you may   having this little chat about Sinestro, this will  be an admitted reach. I'll admit that, which is   kind of becoming a catchphrase of the video. Uh,  but the the little snowflakes on Hal's hospital  
down here did look a bit like the Sinestro  core symbol. I know they're just snowflakes,   uh, but it it was just nice to think of this  as a little bit of visual symbolism. Anyway,   back to the scene. Sheriff Carrie then lays  down the law and tells Hala it's time to cut  
the [ __ ] and start listening to her. Every  time he goes rogue, all he's doing is making   things worse and also undermining Carrie. Going  rogue just reinforces the idea that Makin's the   one who really controls Rushville and that carries  some sort of stand in sheriff which surprisingly  
Hal actually agrees with and even apologizes for.  We can also see they kind of have a little moment   together too that indicates Carrie is warming up  to Hal a bit. How about Carrie also makes it clear   that she's not on Hal's side or Makans but is  just desperately trying to hold the town together.  
We then see the two have a little truth bonding  session where Kerry reveals the reason she was   trying so hard to get Hal to leave. She didn't  want Megan to use the incident to make everyone   in town paranoid about being invaded. And Hal then  tells her the reason that he refuses to leave is  
because he has a gut feeling that something more  is going on here. But he agrees to stay out of   Kerry's way now that they're friends. In a moment,  we also see Hal trying to bond more with Carrie   and learn that she's originally from Gotham.  This is obviously a nod to Batman, mate. Uh,  
give let's give ourselves a pat on the back for  spotting that one. Uh, but we also learned last   episode that Kerry's last name is Kane. Batman was  of course co-created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger.   And this sort of made its way into the comics. The  Canes are the immediate family of Bruce's mother,  
Martha. Why did you say that name? What? And some  of you may also recognize the name Kane from the   the comics. So, the name Kane is pretty important.  Now, no, before you start, mate, we've done enough  
reaching in this video, and I don't think Sheriff  Carrey will be Batoman. Uh, but it's a cool little   node to some DC comic history. How about despite  Hal and Car's newfound understanding as they go   to leave the hospital, Hal notices that he's  the only patient. Carrie just brushes this off,  
saying it's a small town, but Hal also points out  how all of the equipment looks like it just came   out the box. So, it seems like Carrie may have  some more secrets up her sleeve, and I've bloody   figured it out. She is in fact the Manhunter. We  then meet back up with John as he's getting back  
to Rushville and he stops at a diner for a quick  bite to eat and who just so happens to be there,   Makin's wife, Zoe. She just chalks it up to  being a small town as well and invites Jon to  
sit with her. Now, I really hope that we learn in  a couple of episodes that Jon was on to her from   the start because come on, mate. This lady is very  suspicious. She is the manhunter. You can even  
see she's already watching Jon before he notices  her. And the only thing she has is a coffee. Also,   notice how Jon's bird flies over to the light  directly across from her and not onto Jon's   shoulder, almost like it's watching her, too.  But Jon seemingly takes the bait and sits down.  
He tells her that he wouldn't have slept with her  if he'd known she was married, but she isn't very   sorry about it. Zoe then goes on to explain  that the reason she's with Min is for the   security that it offers. And despite him being  a rich guy lpping as a cowboy, they do in fact  
love each other. However, she quickly brings the  conversation back to Hal and Jon admits that he's   still trying to figure out if he can trust him,  which Zoe says, "If you have to ask the question,   then you already know the answer." Now, I know  I've been super suspicious about Zoe since the  
first time we met her, but come on, mate. She  just shows up to this random diner Jon just so   happens to stop at on his way into town, brings  up how the first chance she gets, and even tries   to subtly pit Jon against him. To me, it's clear  she's trying to play Jon for information about  
who clearly has a thing for aliens, but I don't  think that's much fun. So, what we're going to   do is the biggest theory time of the video, and  that is that she is in fact the Manhunter. Now,  
I actually have a wilder theory than that. And I  think that perhaps Zoe Makin could be the daughter   of Sinestro. This is someone known as Sonic  Natu. And you might be thinking, "Wo there,   Paul. Excellent. Nailed the pronunciation." H.  But you might have also lost it this time. So,  
let me explain. So, this scene comes right  after we get our first mention of Sinestro. And   the place is filled with lots of yellow things.  Like we talked about earlier, this is the color   of Fier. And I do think it is some kind of visual  foreshadowing. Specifically where Zoe is sitting,  
you can see a bottle of mustard on the table. And  there's a chicken statue behind her that appears   yellow due to the lighting. When Jon notices  her from the bar, we can also see two more   mustard bottles with Jon framed in the middle of  them. And I mean, for Christ's sake, even the the  
wallpaper's yellow. Now, in the comics, when  Sinestro was still at Green Lantern and best   friends with Abins, he fell in love with Aban's  sister, Aaron Su. Together, they had a daughter   named Sarinik. But when Sinestro started becoming  more and more hinged, Aaron secretly gave her a  
way to save her. Hidden from Sinestro, Saurin grew  up to become a neurosurgeon on their home planet.   After Sinestro then enslaved the planet using  his Green Lantern ring, the Lanterns became a   symbol of oppression. How about Saurin eventually  became a Green Lantern herself after a ring came  
to her following the death of the newest Latin  of sector 1417. It was later revealed that after   Sinestra went full on bad guy and became a yellow  Latin, he found Sony and marked her with a family   coat of arms. And I'm trying my best to get the  pronunciation as cool sounding as possible. But  
this coat of arms contained a microtransmitter  that basically meant he could secretly watch her   and follow her her entire life. Wasn't until  the prelude to the Blackest night event that   Sinestro then returned to her and revealed his  true identity to his daughter. Now, while she  
remained with the Greenlands and is typically  on the side of good, Sarnick later joined her   dad and even became the leader of the Sinestro  Corps herself for a time after he was injured.   If Zoe does turn out to be her, it would then  explain why she's so interested in Hal Jordan  
and trying to cozy up to Jon. Given that we just  learned from Carrie that Hal was the one who took   Sinestro down. It is possible that she blames Hal  and the Green Lantern Corps for what happened to   her father. She could also be trying to use Jon  in order to get Hal and free Sinestro. And there's  
also the fact that Hal's predecessor Abinsur is  Sauronic's uncle. Since even Hal believes there   was some kind of cover up involving his death in  Rushville, the pieces would all fall into place.   This would give her even more motive to come after  Jon and Hal, either for revenge or to find her own  
answers as to what really happened to Avenir. This  would also explain why Zoe came to Rushville in   the first place and got with the one guy who is on  constant alien watch. Now, I know I'm filling in a   lot of blanks here. I've seen your comments last  week about reaching, but I think this would be a  
really cool reveal if it happened to be true.  She's obviously playing some kind of game with   Jon here. And I just think it would be kind of  underwhelming if she's just trying to get info for   making. There's even a recent story line in which  Sinics possessed by the fear entity parallax and  
transfers it to Jon, which I I don't think that's  where they're going, but hey, who knows? So,   yeah, went on a went on a bit of a crazy theory  time there, especially this early in the show,   but I think it would be a great way to give Zoe a  bigger role in the series and another way to test  
Jon. The show very much emphasizes the whole Green  Lanterns can't have fear thing and Jon having to   prove himself by facing the literal embodiment  of fear be such a great way to show how Jon was   always destined to be a Green Lantern. Speaking of  Jon's destiny as well, we then see Zoe drop him at  
Hal's motel. There he gives Hal a lantern and gets  caught up on Hal being shot and his theory that   Mak's hiding something on the ranch. We also see  Hal recharge his ring and I love how he just goes   through the oath very, very fast. However, it's  clear that Jon is still trying to decide if he  
trusts Hal and tries to just go back to his room,  which is when he notices blood all over the rental   car. Haren cracks a joke about the insurance,  which Jon does not find funny, and he decides to   confront Hal about the Manhunters. He immediately  drops his [ __ ] though, and asks, "Why did you  
say that name?" He then rushes through a recap  of what's just happened and says how they suspect   Hal and the Guardians are the ones hiding the  manhunter. How about we can see that regardless   of what the Guardians are doing, Hal is not a  part of it. He then takes this as confirmation  
that his gut feeling was right and that Abins must  have been killed by the manhunter while bringing   it to Earth. Jon then tries to ask Hal more about  the manhunters, but he brushes him off saying it's   simply above his pay grade. However, Jon says  it very much is now, and that the kidnappers  
also told him that creating a living construct  and keeping it alive without wearing a ring is   so advanced that it's practically impossible.  Jon says it can't be true because if it were,   Hal would have at least acknowledged it. to which  Hal sarcastically gives him a hurrah. He then asks  
Jon why he manifested a bird and says that he  brought it to life from his subconscious so   it must mean something to him. But Jon says it's  just a bird and it turns to dust in his hand which   he can see despite what he's just said seems to  make both him and Har a bit sad made me made me  
sad that like was kind of hoping Jon would have a  little bird sidekick for for the whole series. But   I do wonder, getting serious again, if this comes  from his past and he's just acting nonchalant,   as it might cause trauma in him and then make  him feel fear. Like I mentioned before as well,  
creating living constructs is not something every  Green Lantern can do. And this is what makes Jon   Stewart one of the most powerful lanterns to ever  wear the ring. In the comics, Jon's insane level   of willpower makes his constructs some of the most  powerful of any lantern. designs them from inside  
out, constructs them piece by piece, and this  is all in order to make them work practically   on a much stronger level. Jon's willpower is so  great that he's even able to channel the power of   will without wearing a ring. This is how he was  able to maintain the bird construct throughout  
the episode and why Antan said it proved Jon  could do the impossible. Jon has even a ring   into existence from nothing and this happened  when he was part of the Justice League and fought   against Sinestro. Now, while Jon and other Latins  have made constructs of people before, it wasn't  
until Philip Kennedy Johnson's Green Lantern War  Journal that showed Jon could also create life. He   created a construct of his deceased sister Ellie  to watch over their mother who was suffering from   dementia. However, unlike the other constructs,  Ellie was fully sentient and was able to exist and  
make decisions entirely independent of Jon. So,  while it may just be a little bird in the show,   this is no small feat and shows how insanely  powerful Jon's will is. It's also something   Hal probably doesn't really want Jon to know  either, and he almost doesn't want to give  
him that acknowledgement, as it would be like  admitting that he's better for the job. After   John kills his bed and retires for the night, Hal  isn't quite ready to just sleep this all off. So,   he grabs his bag and puts on his suit for the  first time in what I imagine is a very long  
time before then flying off into space. We then  see Hal flying over what looks like a desolate   planet with a gigantic crack in the middle. I did  even wonder as well and when the trailer came out   if if the the crack that we see in this shot was  created by Lex Luthther and Superman, but yeah,  
this is taking place in 2016. So, I don't know  why I'm telling you this, but I'm debunking my   own theory. We then see him walking through  some kind of alien prison. And in the comics,   these are called sign cells. This is where the  Guardians keep their most dangerous prisoners. And  
this is because they refuse to kill any sentient  beings because yeah, life is precious. Each sign   cell is also specifically designed to contain  each villain and neutralize their power. However,   in the comics, sign cells are also located on the  Guardian's home planet, OA, which I don't think  
is the planet we see here. I mean, it could be.  Uh, but OA in the comics has a massive city with   oceans and forests and all kinds of regular planet  stuff, but this place looks frozen in time. At  
least from the bird's eye view of it we get here.  This makes me think the show could be pulling   from some earlier Green Lantern comics where the  Guardians sent their prisoners to a prison planet.   There they created artificial time divisions  to stop the criminals from ever escaping or  
contacting each other and this also prevented them  from aging and basically made their imprisonment   eternal. As Hal makes his way through the prison,  we then see him come to a cell that he has to   unlock by stating his identity. And it's at this  point we're introduced to the infamous Sinestro.  
Hal has come to question him about the manhunters.  However, Sinestro is a bit insulted that Hal   doesn't even ask him how he's doing. He then says  that if a manhunter still existed, it would be the   second biggest problem he's facing before asking  him to tell him about John Stewart. That's where  
we end the episode. H, and we have a lot to unpack  there, but I'll try and make this very quick   uh because we've gone through a lot of comic  book lore already today. The way Sinestro asks   about Jon seems to imply that he's Hal's biggest  problem next to the Manhunters. I think this is  
more of a loaded question than it seems though  and given everything that we've talked about in   this episode with the Red Lanterns Sinestro his  daughter Abinser and so on and so on. I think the   real problem that Sinestro is referring to here  is the prophecy of the blackest knight in the  
comics. The blackest knight is something that  fetals the end of the universe after the seven   cores of the emotional spectrum fighting a war  of light that would awaken the primal darkness of   the universe and destroy completely everything.  While the guardians were aware of the prophecy,  
they refused to believe it and hid it in the  last chapter of the book of Oah. However,   after Atrocidus and the other five inversions  were imprisoned by the Guardians, they performed   a ritual that allowed them to peer into the future  and discover the prophecy themselves. Atrocidus  
and the other inversions then told the prophecy  to Aban Sir when he visited their planet on a   rescue mission along with how he would die and be  replaced by Hal Jordan, but he was forbidden to   speak of it by the Guardians who told him that the  inversions were demons that told lies. Abins then  
continued to visit the inversions to learn more  about the blackest knight and Atrocidus convinced   him that the source of the black that would  consume the entire universe was located on Earth.   This is when Abinser took Atrocidus captive on his  ship which resulted in his death. The prophecy of  
the blackest knight was also the reason that  Sinestro became a tyrant and what led to him   becoming a yellow lantern. There after he and  Hal arrested Atrocidus for the murder of Abins,   Atrocid gave Sinestro a prophecy of his own of how  his home world would descend into chaos. This then  
led onto him becoming a tyrant out of fear of it  coming true. And that kind of works everything   together and fits perfectly. And Paul, you are  a genius. Now, I know I'm kind of working on  
the assumption here that all our previous theories  are right, which they probably aren't. Um, but it   seems like this is possibly a direction that the  show might be taking us. Blackest night is widely  
considered one of the best Green Lantern stories  from the comics. Um, so it wouldn't be surprising   if uh that's something they're adapting. It's a  massive event that spans across multiple titles.   But another major character that sets this all  off is the Green Lantern villain, the Black Hand,  
who we theorized last week could be William Min.  This scene with Hal visiting Sinestro in prison   also seems like it's directly pulled from 2005's  Green Lantern issue 28. There Sinestro tells Hal  
about the Blackest Night and sets the whole event  off following the Sinestro core war. Obviously, I   think a lot of what happens in the comics will be  changed for the show, but with both of these first   two episodes putting such a focus on Abinser's  death and connecting it to what's going on in  
Rushful, I feel like it might be a safe bet. But  that wraps up our episode 2 breakdown of Lanterns.   And though I wasn't fully sold on the episode  last week, I really enjoyed this one. I love the  
new factions coming in, and pacing wise, this is  kind of what I wanted from last week. coming from   a comic book nerd perspective as well. I love all  the little details and references that the show is   throwing out there to hint what we might be seeing  moving forward. I know it's my job and all that as  
well uh to point this stuff out, but I was really  surprised while going through the episodes at how   many references and story lines out there that  they're kind of stitching together here. I mean,   we're only two episodes in and we've got like five  theories going already, but that's what makes it  
fun, isn't it? I am a little disappointed that  we didn't get at least one scene in 2026, though,   especially since Yeah. Last week's cliffhanger was  such a massive moment. All in all though, I'm way   more on board with the show than I was last week.  And I'd love to hear if this has done the same
