# The Tesla Semi Math That Destroys Diesel Trucks

> Source: [The Tesla Semi Math That Destroys Diesel Trucks](https://youtube.com/watch?v=eFmzapR2yjw)

## Summary

The video discusses the rapid adoption of electric semi-trucks, highlighting their economic and operational advantages over diesel trucks. It emphasizes the quick break-even point and superior unit economics of electric trucks, despite the higher upfront cost.

### Key Points

- **Electrification is inevitable and fast** [00:00] — Electrification in trucking is coming quickly due to undeniable economics and operational benefits in service and maintenance.
- **Five-year break-even is a good investment** [00:12] — With semi-trucks lasting 10-15 years, a five-year break-even point is only a third to half way into the asset's life, making it a sound investment.
- **Diesel price sensitivity** [00:26] — At current diesel prices, electric trucks make sense. If diesel prices drop, the upgrade cycle becomes less attractive for fleet owners.
- **Diesel truck fuel efficiency** [00:47] — Average diesel truck MPG is 8-9, with modern trucks reaching up to 11.5 MPG, but this is the extreme.
- **Tesla's unit economics are better** [01:03] — Even with the best diesel trucks, Tesla's electric trucks have better unit economics, partly due to manufacturing and aerodynamics.

### Conclusion

Electric semi-trucks are set to disrupt the industry rapidly, offering better long-term economics and operational benefits. The transition is not just likely but imminent.

## Transcript

Really, the big thing is that electrification is here and it's going to come very quickly. The economics are undeniable. And then the overall operational benefits in terms of service and maintenance can't be argued with either.
And so this isn't just going to happen. It's going to happen very quickly. So a five-year break-even as a good investment. Typically, these cars are going to last or these cars, these semi-trucks are going to last 10 to 15 years.
Your break-even point at that point is about a third to 50% of the way into still a depreciating asset. At today's diesel prices, totally makes sense. If prices for diesel tank, now you're talking about trying to compete in the upgrade cycle and do people want to throw more money into investing in their trucks up front.
Now, the average MPG, miles per gallon right now, for diesel trucks sits somewhere around 8 to 9. More modern diesel trucks can get as high as 11.5.
So to be clear, 11.5 is like the latest extreme. You're still better off on unit economics for the Tesla. And a lot of that, I think, has to do with the manufacturing and the aerodynamics that they're putting into these vehicles, and they're fantastic.
But either way, it's very exciting if we can actually achieve these numbers relative to diesel trucks. So cool things here that we got to see inside of in the Tesla factory.
