[00:02] [music] E60 M5 in this V10 drag race special? over the stunning quarter mile. I'm Mat Watson, you're watching Carwow. [00:19] So, it's got an 8.4 L naturally aspirated V10, which normally puts out 600 horsepower. However, it's been tuned by the owner with a new exhaust system ECU tweak. So, apparently it's got about 650 horsepower. Now, that drives the [00:31] rear wheels by a chunky six-speed manual gearbox. This car weighs in at 1,500 kilos, is worth about 130,000 pounds. Hello. Uh window switches. Hello. >> Just let you know, I've owned this car [00:45] >> Nobody's ever driven it apart from me. >> Yeah. >> So, don't break it. >> Okay. Okay, Barry. Hey, Barry. >> Okay. Okay, Barry. Hey, Barry. >> Yes. [00:57] >> It's got a few weird things in it, next to this car. All right, Barry, I'll look Of course I'll look after it. I'm going to BE VERY CAREFUL. [01:09] Wait a minute. Should have given him these today. Should have given him these today. Guys. Anyhow, let's find out about that BMW. Nick, give us a stats on the German V10. [01:24] >> Yeah, so this German V10, 5 L of naturally aspirated gloriousness, 507 horsepower, 520 Newton meters of torque. This has the SMG gearbox, which is well, we'll see how that goes, but seven-speed automated robotized manual, rear-wheel [01:39] automated robotized manual, rear-wheel drive. This M5 weighs 1,755 kilos, and >> Wait a minute, you're down on power, you're down on torque, you're up on you're down on torque, you're up on weight. I'm not sure you are. Also, when [01:52] fail. >> [laughter] >> Don't say the R word. At the time this car was built, BMW was racing V10 F1 was built? Oh, yeah, yeah, building trucks. Yeah. [02:06] know what though, your car does have launch control, so that could be the myself. Got to do it all manually. I know your car isn't great at smooth shifts, but it is good at fast shifts. It's got the weirdest launch control [02:18] >> Yeah, so you have to press the buttons in a sort of weird secret handshake with. But then once that's all set up, you need to press the brake, push the gear lever forwards, hold it forwards, take your foot off the brake, push the [02:32] accelerator, and then just sort of flick the gear lever away, and the car takes >> Yeah, so it's not the normal left foot on brake, right foot on throttle, released the brake well beforehand, haven't you? It's just odd. Do you know [02:44] what's interesting though? I've got more power, well, on paper. But I've got American power. It's often overstated. You've got German power, which is often be closer than you think. >> There is nothing understated about that [02:57] car, is there, Matt? You've got side pipes, you've got a wing. It's just >> And I tell you what else. I mean, they're so different. So, yours is whereas my crazy-looking car. Also, the sound of them. Yours sounds like I [03:10] expect a V10 to sound. This doesn't. I'm going to rev mine up. Now, actually, you rev up yours first for a a nice classy crisp V10 wail. [03:26] it's got an aftermarket exhaust on, but have a listen. [03:42] >> Uh and the vibrations that come through the cabin, I almost need to get a feel for it. I'm going to have a little go up and down the runway. If you need to do the same, Nick, you you go do that. [04:05] >> 3 2 2 1 [04:28] Wow. Goodbye, Matthew. Come on, my Dodge darling. [04:41] Come on, GERMAN HORSEPOWER. OH, THIS is really close. Oh, yes. It's a close one. [05:03] >> [screaming] >> I'M GLAD YOUR WINDOWS ARE TINTED because I can't see your smug grin. Well, let me see it. >> Smug. >> Oh, put it away. Can your car do any [05:16] better? Yes or no? >> Yes, because I have a an ABS warning. It says break and drive control system failure, reduced braking and driving turn it on again. >> Okay, but it's not going to make it go [05:28] problem? Wheel spin? What? >> Yeah, lots of wheel spin, but I was ahead of you throughout all of that. I think once we got into sort of third gear, then your masses of torque just were too much for me. [05:40] best out of three anyway. I'll give you another shot if your rod bearings hold Is your German car broken? >> No, there's nothing to worry about. It's fine. It's all good. >> It's unusual for a German car to break, [05:53] especially a BMW. An old BMW. >> Yeah, whereas uh >> No. >> No, no. aluminum engine. I think it'll be fine now. [06:05] you leaning down here?" He's going to kiss the ring. That the ring on the finger. This body is so long. I didn't know where to line up. Nick, look how >> [laughter] >> Oh, you're not compensating for [06:19] >> I'm always compensating, Nick, no matter which car I'm driving. >> 3 2 2 1 [06:35] >> Ah! Oh, no! [06:48] Oh, [laughter] no! I've been absolutely demolished. [07:01] Oh, yeah, he got absolutely there. wipers on. Ah. Now, your car is seeming broken, Nick. >> I didn't get a very good launch at all. And shifting manually, which I have to [07:17] do when I'm not engaging launch control, is no smoother than this SMG at the best >> What you need is the gear shift in the stop in the top setting, regardless of them home. Oh, you need stability off of the special special setting, and it [07:31] sensor. >> Although, after that run, we're back on. I can get it into special special mode. >> Damn. We'll count that as a null run. I'm glad as well, cuz that was bad. Just bombed. [07:45] So, we need all the revs. It's got to be like about 4 and 1/2 5. Smell of fuel in here. Feel like I'm off my tits. 2 1 [08:13] on, now. Wow, this is brutal. [08:26] No way I can pull it back with a shift here. M5. You can do it. DAMN IT. TOO MUCH WHEEL SPIN. I HAD TOO MANY [08:39] TOO MUCH WHEEL SPIN. I HAD TOO MANY REVS. YOU CAN DO IT. YES. SHITE. OH, NO. You know what that means? One each. No way, Jose. [08:53] I had too much wheel spin there. This is just like a fine line. You got to get had it. I'm just going to put my window down so you can see my smug face. [09:05] spend half an hour cooling the car down. So, you go do that. I'll meet you on the >> [laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah, he's not wrong. 2 1 [09:22] >> We're on. We're striking. Off we go. We're on. We've got it. Come on, M5. Oh. [09:36] These are so close. Oh, but Matt's pulling ahead. [09:49] It's all down to the gear changes now, It's all down to the gear changes now, Matthew. [10:04] Woohoo! Oh, that was lush. Fair's fair, man. We were neck and neck for ages, and my car was just like spinning like crazy. Could you see that? That was so much fun. >> Every time I turned to look at you, my [10:16] back into the headrest. That was violent for both of us, but what a race. >> This, honestly, it's so good. It's so good. I really, really enjoyed that. car doesn't have to do it again because I don't think it could this. I think it [10:29] boots, this. Good old American muscle car. Let's see the times. [music] So, then, what exactly happened? Well, the Dodge won. It completed a standing quarter mile in 12.3 seconds. The BMW [music] took 12.5 seconds. [10:44] rolling [clears throat] race. So, we're going to race over the half mile. We're going to start in third gear. We'll set the pace at 50. On 3-2-1, go it. We'll got? Six or seven? >> I've got seven gears, so that's a good [10:57] lower in the Well, we'll find out. >> We will find out cuz this thing has long ass gears. 3-2-1, go. go. Ah, just dropped that in my nuts. [11:17] >> Woo, he has got long gears, hasn't he? But loads of torque. >> Oh, no, we've got him. We've got him now cuz I can just rev this out. [11:41] That's 120 mph. >> He's disappearing now. Oh gosh, look at the diffuser flapping away. [12:03] got no chance. >> You were defeated. >> I was, yeah. Um I could [laughter] hear your car not struggling, but I could off. The lack of torque is showing itself now, isn't it? [12:15] the rev range from the get-go, you would have more of a chance? >> I think so, yeah, yeah. This is a smaller engine, high revving. What's >> Six and a half. What's yours? >> Mine's 8, too. [12:27] >> But I did 120 mph in third gear. >> [laughter] >> I tell you what we'll do. We'll do a half-mile rolling from 10 mph. Okay. 2 1 [12:41] 1 >> Oh, he's ahead. >> Oh, but look at this spot. And now he's dead, surely. [13:05] that is game over for me, and there he goes. [13:25] >> Oh, boost as well and truly engaged in that Viper. Come on M5, you're not that Viper. Come on M5, you're not embarrassing yourself. This is wicked. [13:45] >> Yeah, you got nothing, boy. You got nothing. >> That thing's like a Saturn V. Like the first 10 m is not slow and steady, but once it gets going that the boost is a lit. [14:00] and done with. >> Although those brakes look pretty meaty >> I have no idea. You know we got to break test from 100 miles an hour. Car that stops in the shortest distance wins. Nick was onto something there. These are [14:15] graded brakes and from the Gen V car. Hopefully they'll help me out here. Oh, slow down. >> [screaming] [14:34] Oh my goodness. Whoo, where is it? Oh. Oh, it's not Oh, it's not too bad. Look at that. This stops much better than the BMW, doesn't it? >> I mean this is a four-door saloon and [14:46] the tires on your car, they're wider than I don't know, the English >> I didn't even have any ABS. It's all it was just I reckon I could have hit the impressed by this car. Which one do you think has the best V10? That highly [15:00] strung, low tolerance BMW or this high tolerance, unhighly strung Dodge? comparable. Ultimately, your car is a bit faster and I imagine yours will keep [15:12] being faster for decades to come. This is going to need some TLC at some point, >> And that's something about BMWs. Now you might be thinking I'm being a bit unfair on BMWs, but to see what I mean, we did a drag race of all M5s and [15:24] one broke. Now, if you watch that video there, you'll see exactly which BMW M5 you'll be able to see the performance between them. Do you think you can really rely [music] on BMW for reliability? If that makes any sense. [15:36] don't forget to subscribe to this channel because we've got more V10 see you very soon in the next V10 drag see you very soon in the next V10 drag race video.
