And bust out the popcorn, of athleticism and a lot of close calls home videos of Phat Gus as a baby
you're just gonna have to see it to believe it. (soaring music) and welcome to the Backyard Summer Games
in all the world compete the high jump and spinning balance beam, all for the glory and prestigious Walnut Cup.
- Just going with Jimmy? - Alright, well that is a pretty great name, The birds are singing and the smell of fresh cut grass is
out to the action with our first event, the ski jump. 'cause this is a squirrel competition you've designed a squirrel obstacle course
they basically have to outsmart you and earn it. but much to the utter dismay of both me and the birds, with impunity because they know they've won,
So, after two years I've given up. but who would win if it's them versus themselves? against each other in?
they have to take the walnut bait and the trap door drops you could imagine there might be a squirrel
named Phat Gus who was a little more, you know, sturdy, And, a squirrel like that would be where the key really is just not to get greedy,
as many walnuts as you can in your mouth, nope. Well at some point you just run out of time,
the perfect moment to introduce with a heavy favorite Phat Gus. that's phat with the P-H as in phantastic.
I stumbled on some previously undiscovered footage. I was able to piece together that Phat Gus grew up Even from the outside you can see it was a simple home,
they were really good But, what they lacked in material possessions That other squirrel, by the way, is Phat Gus's sister,
Augustine, and she's the second member of Team Hubcap Hills. Even that signature superhero pose manifested And then Augustine, for her part, was always very clever,
Here you can see her spending a long time trying to get for all of three seconds and then waking up to a new hairdo. they've been training to compete in the backyard games
because it represented a chance to move up Speaking of which, for the other two contenders But, what you might not know is they grew up
in Walnut Estates in a nice Japanese maple down the street. Walnut Estates features a hickory piano Rick and Marty's athletic training equipment was
but Walnut Estates is so spacious, it has two rooms. where they could take their time learning basic skills, they've always been fairly athletic,
what all four contenders have in common is So, it'll be fascinating to see who comes out on top. after a recovery and then a swift abandonment
Augustine, steps up for her attempt. in her nibbling, the outcome remained unchanged. 'cause it's like one second there is a floor
But she recovers beautifully, like squirrels always do, in my previous two backyard squirrel videos. the other two from the sidelines and taking notes
if you walk directly onto the platform, And while he is clearly bad at deductive reasoning, because before the floor barely even drops
he's launched himself onto the roof. and while that might be less entertaining for the crowd, of the backyard summer games for Team Walnut Estates.

In the slow-mo, you see that classic make your body so a squirrel could survive a fall from any height. and making such quick work of the beam
You could see the birds really appreciated that run The bird stands are constructed such that without being bothered by the squirrels,
because of course they were going to try. Finally, there was Phat Gus but that's when things took a turn, like actually
(plucky music) You've just gotta admire the tenacity here.
'cause it really gives you a sense Ugh. Alright, let's just get back on top and back on bottom. Hold it, hold it.
And, the oh u-turn. Oh, Mark does not pay me nearly enough for this. the backyard games is all about results.
which takes us to the third event called Quick Drop. off the cylinder to access the chewy walnut center. they've been training for this event from a young age.
because while Rick was able to work Phat Gus is over here dealing with although still managing to look really adorable
Augustine was up first and scoped things out, she couldn't settle on a strategy and after another little flexing routine to psych up
he's a bit more bold, but still pretty skittish. in the neighborhood who are less interested
like this blue jay buzzing by, Then, of course, there's a few cats But, by far the most fearsome predator
See if you can spot him. with this camouflaged beast, he somehow decides his best option is just to hurl
because the most feared backyard creature is a big old rat. He's a bit of a bully, and his name is Fat Tail. ♪ Fat Tail ♪
♪ Fat Tail ♪ - [Mark] Fat tail is just your classic schoolyard bully.
he wreaks chaos and terror in the backyard. Back to the games, you could see Phat Gus steps up to the big wooden sphere after all,
to Augustine's attempt with no actual results, But, it's when he goes for the walnuts inside And that gold medal performance meant
- Well, this is a best of seven event. And this may be turning into an old fashioned route. because if Walnut Estates gets one more gold medal
- [Mark] Which is all to say they needed if they ever expected to hoist the Walnut Cup. and make it all the way to the sandpit.
Rick is the first one up, and you can see and to do the math in his head to make the jump work. and to put his trust, not in the math, but in himself,
(bird chirps) Next up is Augustine. she musters an uncharacteristic amount of resolve
and just goes full send sticking a perfect landing. on deck while she's enjoying the fruits of her labors
but are you cool if I join you on the landing pad?" As she not only kicks him off, with all the excitement around the backyard games
Some who were bigger, but it's like, dude crow, you have wings.
he needs to land this to keep them in contention. upon an extremely rare alternating double arm flex. And with a big leap and a bit of a mid-air tail correction,
And finally, there's Phat Gus And while as Marty seeks motivation Phat Gus seeks motivation from the power nap,
- [Chuck] Here's the approach and the launch. (air swooshes)
(heart beats) - [Chuck] Yes, she did. - Bang the pots and bring in the melon ballers,
Oh my. Have you ever seen anything like that before in your life? the sweet taste of victory
Rick realizes his hopes for redemption as he shows himself down and heads to the next event Now, for the Nutcracker, the gold medal goes
then eat the actual nut in the walnut shell. at a young age. there was some confusion as to how this event works,
Over at Hubcap Hills, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Rick comes in strong but then freezes up
as he tries to remember how they did this as kids. And that appears to do the trick, but fumbles on the goal line,
and having just coached Rick through this, Oh, Marty with the nice fumble recovery, but after finding the exact perfect way to hold the shell,
And while this is a disappointing showing because even as a baby squirrel, Here, he takes their favorite toy basketball,
so there's no possible way Rick's ever gonna find it. then shells the walnut there's Augustine who takes a completely different approach,
but it still counts keeping their dreams alive and building on their momentum. in the Backyard Games, the Thunder Dome
And the rules here are pretty simple. in the dome, takes home the gold. of wrestling in them growing up.
to the surfboard, So, it'll be interesting to see And so, after setting it out in the yard for a bit
who was somewhat intrigued trying to figure out with only minor distractions and a quick power nap And Phat Gus was really enjoying time in the Thunder Dome.
(death metal music) sort of helpless as Fat Tail comes in But, after he leaves, Gus reclaims the throne
the bullier becomes the bullied. And after that moment, you could just tell This was Phat Gus's world,
from this newfound bravado. it's no surprise that anytime the king showed up which means Hubcap Hills took the gold tying things up
in the final event to settle who would be And so this was it. and you could, since the anticipation in the air
So the competitors made their way over in their heads preparing themselves mentally - [Chuck] Oh my goodness.
- What a shameful example of poor sportsmanship. - [Mark] Even the birds were expressing their distaste But, the mark of a true professional is being able to clear
as she then makes her way up to the platform. arguably less of a jump and more of a hoist, but whatever. 'cause he discovered he could see himself in the reflection.
Phat Gus and Marty, on the other hand, were able to clear to the highest high jump setting. things did not end well for him.
and then deduce that the best way over was under. So, she was out too. And after a final flex to really hype himself up,
and with the big effort he did it. although he sort of grabbed the side to do it. without using the side, that would give the humble underdogs
- [Chuck] Here's Phat Gus with the approach, The jump is up. Still paused.
Well, okay, I guess that means Marty gets the gold, making them the official winners of the Backyard Games.
I mean, you could see they're ecstatic, and rightfully so. - Wait a second, I'm getting some breaking news. what I've just heard has disturbed me deeply.
because of a bombshell revelation. by the way he banished himself The first clue was after going through all the footage,
for not noticing this myself, It's almost like he had all these new-found muscles non-regulation walnuts to make
he'd have to hide them somewhere. his favorite spot for hiding stuff was under the rug. a raid was secretly being conducted
And sure enough, a trap door was discovered. a couple of bags of Russian walnuts. Russian walnuts are strictly prohibited.
the only one strong enough to conquer the high jump. just how utterly shocked everyone was. - Wow. This is disappointing on a molecular level.
but as an American. it's a disgrace to the integrity of the Backyard Games. it meant an adjustment had to be made.
to Hubcap Hills of the backyard summer games. down to the trophy.
she just couldn't contain herself. (tone beeps) how Marty would've even got ahold of those.
from the underground sewer network. I mean, he'd have to go through, wait a second, Of course, Fat Tail was masterminding the whole thing
Eventually, Phat Gus and Augustine took and they used the money that poured in to relocate with of course the addition of a conspicuous law ornament
And speaking of their neighbors, in their hearts to forgive Marty, which is all to say in the end
Well, except for Fat Tail. (death metal music) - Fun fact, squirrels only remember
That means, if you see a big old oak tree, there's a decent chance it's there because of a squirrel. So, it's crazy to imagine
