Star Wars: A License to Kill Creativity
60sCriticizes industry fear of creativity and reliance on proven formulas, sparking debate among fans.
▶ Play ClipThis video is a detailed critique of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', focusing on narrative flaws, character inconsistencies, and over-reliance on nostalgia. The creator argues that the film prioritizes fan service over coherent storytelling, leading to plot holes and underdeveloped characters.
The video begins by criticizing the film's lack of originality, stating that Star Wars came from nowhere but now only produces sequels and TV series, showing a lack of imagination.
Leia arrives 40 minutes after Han is introduced, at the lowest point in the story. C-3PO's appearance is criticized as a nostalgic callback without substance.
C-3PO's red arm is a merchandising gimmick, with the backstory told outside the film, indicating poor storytelling.
The dialogue between Han and Leia is awkward, with ADR added to clarify their relationship and Kylo Ren's identity, showing poor planning.
The Resistance base is introduced, but the fleet shown contradicts 'The Last Jedi', where ships appear from nowhere.
Poe was originally killed off but brought back due to Oscar Isaac's request, leading to an implausible survival scenario.
Finn works on multiple key First Order facilities, providing convenient information to the Resistance, which is inconsistent with his character.
The map plot is convoluted: split into two pieces, with R2-D2 in a coma for no reason, and the First Order already having the larger piece.
The film explains 30 years of character history in under 150 words, failing to show the dissolution of Han and Leia's relationship.
The script relies heavily on coincidences and 'and then' storytelling rather than cause and effect, undermining character agency.
Kylo Ren is underdeveloped; his motivations and backstory are barely explored, relying on the audience's attachment to OT characters.
Kylo's helmet is placed in a tray of victims' ashes, a detail cut from the film, making the scene confusing.
Rey, untrained, overpowers Kylo in a Force mind battle, undermining the importance of training and the dark side's quick power.
Rey performs a Jedi mind trick without any training, breaking established rules and relying on third-party explanations.
Starkiller Base is a super Death Star that drains suns, an escalation that lacks the dread of the original Death Star.
Han uses hyperspace to bypass Starkiller Base's shields, a maneuver that breaks established rules and creates continuity issues.
Finn's role as a janitor is used for a joke, but it contradicts his earlier knowledge and undermines his character.
Captain Phasma lowers the shields without resistance, a wasted character who is easily defeated.
The Resistance sends only 12 X-wings to attack Starkiller Base, despite having larger ships in 'The Last Jedi', creating a plot hole.
The video concludes by teasing the next part, which will cover Han Solo's death and further critique.
The video argues that 'The Force Awakens' is a poorly constructed film that relies on nostalgia, convenience, and weak character development, ultimately damaging the Star Wars franchise.

01:54:23[00:02] we can make a lot of money this is a license to Kill and they did it they just simply and of course the only way you can really do that is not take you can really do that is not take chances only do something that's
[00:15] proven let's not do you got to remember Star Wars came from nowhere there was nothing like it now if you do anything it's not a sequel or not a TV series or do it that's the downside of Star Wars
[00:30] and it really shows an enormous lack of imagination and fear of creativity on the part of an industry hello there ladies and gentlemen I'm moer and welcome to a critique of the force awakens part four
[00:47] installments of this series to get a strong grip on what I'm doing here and for those who are caught up let's get on with it after kylo and the first order leave the planet Leia Orana arrives on schedule a round 40 minutes after Han is
[01:03] introduced and a round 40 minutes before Luke she's here exactly 1 hour and 20 minutes into the film do I think this is by Design so this is obviously the by Design so this is obviously the lowest point in the story for Our Heroes
[01:18] lowest point in the story for Our Heroes So Far So In This Moment of Despair the story needed some uplift and we felt it was the perfect place to reintroduce some dear friends well yes I do we then get the wonderful addition of
[01:33] get the wonderful addition of C3PO goodness H solo it is I C3PO a welcoming moment for many fans I suppose but it's another classic example of running on the fumes of the OT I love playing C3PO partly because I'm I'm very
[01:48] fond of him but also he is this icon that that as soon as you see C3PO you know it's a Star Wars event he is truly one of the icons there are others there's Darth Vader and so on huh yeah I guess this Darth Vader he also has a red
[02:03] arm and I would imagine there's no mystery as to why any excuse to revamp merchandise would reasonably be taken at this point it may be a little easier to sell than a C3PO that looks exactly the same as every other iteration where
[02:16] other main characters are able to change their clothes and props droids less so though I have received comments before going over the interesting subplot of how C3PO both acquired the arm and fixes it by the end it's a thing that happens
[02:31] outside of the movie that's wonderful and I'm sure it was fulfilling to Shell out extra dollars to discover the incredible story behind a red arm from a character with less screen time in these movies than Captain fasma yes remember
[02:45] who c3pio even mentions how he must get his proper arm reinstalled yes I must get my proper arm reinstalled these things are small in the script but they're indicative of a hole he then mistakenly refers to Leia
[02:59] as princess instead of General excuse me prin General sorry come along pb8 quickly I find that a bit too telling of the writing again it's a form of exposition reassuring the audience that this is indeed Princess Leia she just
[03:15] looks a little different the strangeness of it is in C3PO making this mistake when he's not only a Droid but one built on the idea of etiquette Leia has been a general for some time of course it was for the cute fact and to facilitate any
[03:31] confused audience members that however doesn't mean there weren't more congruent ways of getting this information across Han and Leia then have a very awkward discussion about how much they've changed since they last saw
[03:44] each other change your [Music] hair same jacket matching the audience's perception to then discuss kylo Ren and since he's so new to the audience the
[03:58] dialogue morphs to better hold hold the viewer's hand a sign from there we were viewer's hand a sign from there we were going to cut to this line he was here but because people may not be clear on the fact that Leia and Han were
[04:10] previously together they had some ADR to sort out an additional line a sort out an additional line a sign Le I saw her some he was here listen for the change in audio quality I saw
[04:26] him Le I saw some they changed the the camera angle and thought we wouldn't notice but we did and if you've seen more from my Channel at this point you'll know that I've come across quite a few examples of ADR again not
[04:39] something I consider a problem in and of itself unless executed horribly rather forgot about during principal photography while noting the expertise in adding content that wasn't previously given room for actors May provide
[04:54] to lines that weren't there in the first place you can pretty much bet that har Fisher wouldn't have reacted this way to align that significant had it been in the original scene a sign Le I saw her
[05:10] sign Le I saw her son he was here ADR can be super useful like myself after having made the drafts now the people who are watching this as a sequel wouldn't have an issue
[05:25] figuring out that if Han had a son that child would have been layers because my God imagine them skipping over a storyline where Leia and Han split up or Han had a son with another love interest but the people who are watching this
[05:38] trilogy May genuinely wonder who these people even are so obviously they threw the line in later the theory is that this film was made for OT fans that's why it takes so much from the original attempting to bank on those same
[05:53] Nostalgia bucks with little concern for storytelling because who would care about it outside of some kind of toxic brood anyway we see the resistance forces at what is nearly an hour and a half into the film they are situated on
[06:06] a planet with many hangers and Personnel this planet will be featured in the opening of The Last Jedi moments before the base is destroyed and we'll find out that the resistance Fleet as it currently stands has one large mon
[06:19] calamari ship the radus several supporting ships around 20 x- wings and Sam Wings thrown in alongside many bomber class ships that are notoriously bomber class ships that are notoriously effective
[06:39] bunch of distinctive Pilots all of which are missing for the force awakens despite having taken place just hours ago the reality is that these resources were conjured from nothing for Dramatics in The Last Jedi all of them are
[06:52] destroyed in various poorly written heart-wrenching scenes but this is a very flawed piece of Contin with the only explanation being that they were busy fighting some other enemy somewhere they simply couldn't take the time out
[07:06] to defend the resistance from utter Annihilation and you know what what I line that I would have been critical of but the Last Jedi didn't even do that in an attempt to remain coherent with its predecessor though that isn't important
[07:20] right now compared to the incredible resurrection of Po damaran Yes we finally got here The Story Goes that PO was set to die in the crash in the opening of of the film however Oscar Isaac asked that he remain alive as he
[07:33] had died in so many projects in recent memory and he was a big fan of Star Wars originally po was going to die early in the film and that was the script that Oscar saw when I thought of Po I I I thought he would seem to die here and
[07:47] I wrote the script we just we killed him and when I showed the script to Oscar Isaac who I really wanted he said he really wanted to do it but he died in like four other movies in the First Act and one of his issues wanting to do this
[08:02] movie was that he made like four movies in which he died early on a week or so figured out Po's in the rest of the movie now originally po was supposed to be killed off at the beginning but you were so good that you uh came back I
[08:17] just begged for my life that's all I did and it was Michelle reuan co-producer of the movie who said you know po used to live I was like no no no I I think it's yeah but it's really happy and the movie needs something happy at that point so I
[08:31] and he agreed to be in the movie and so this idea that PO comes back was something that was added later which obviously for me was incredibly exciting and and and fantastic I get to live many hours later does that reduce the chances
[08:45] of a return for po Damron one day um probably but you know who knows I need another house or something so they resurrected him and got him back to the resistance despite it being extremely implausible let's start from the
[09:00] beginning po was visiting a village on jaku at night trying to find the map to Luke he is then abused captured and tortured extensively to then be brought to a TIE fighter that gets shot down over jaku he was apparently thrown from
[09:15] the crash and survived he then slept until midnight and decided to leave the planet once he woke up ending up here that's wonderful as Oscar Isaac is a great actor and the film will likely be better for him but he isn't surv iing
[09:29] this crash the only way we're pulling this off is if he had some kind of Pilot's Escape pod with a parachute that Finn didn't have access to and didn't see evidence of but then we have to deal with some extreme dehydration Finn was
[09:42] shown to walk from the crash site to the local Village and he was near death well before it got dark maybe PO is simply well hydrated or he landed under some shady part of the desert or maybe the force saved him or maybe the first order
[09:57] allowed him to keep a flask of water or maybe he died again this is made worse when you consider that if po was simply lying there he should have been found easily by the first order they knew the location for the crash site in fact they
[10:10] had a pinpoint tracking system with a vested interest in these two and a potential for an immediate arrival man they don't make him like they used to he was being chased by the first order in a situation where Escape was nigh
[10:22] impossible even if he found the Droid but we're supposed to believe he simply woke up and decided to go back home I got thrown from the crash I woke up at night no you no ship nothing this tiny piece of dialogue from po was meant to
[10:35] explain it as long as you don't ask additional questions but do you remember this other piece of dialogue do you hear me I'll come back for you no you won't come back for him at all but before the audience can reconcile this information
[10:49] PO says bb8 was saved by Finn and Finn corrects him saying that someone else helped the idea of getting any depth from po about his miraculous res SK is shut off entirely by a rolling plot that wants to distract the audience as
[11:04] quickly as possible that attitude is pervasive in these movies dangling keys that they don't think for more than seconds about what just happened and why an attitude that has infected everything from future Star Wars projects to the
[11:19] future of high budget projects in general wow dude Pride Rock how did po even get a ship to leave jaku he had nothing to B with and no contacts and sympathetic factions with strong knowledge of his location it can't work
[11:36] and unfortunately it's a result of a quick decision made because an actor didn't want their character to die irrelevant of how it rippled through the entire script the obvious correction being that Finn Poe and Ray should have
[11:50] from the beginning though it was good to see the effort in bb8 to show concern as he should when greeting po again it's cute no doubt just frustrating since this scenario is almost an impossibility
[12:03] it's also worth bearing in mind here that Finn just exited the very same ship that Han established was being scanned for by the first order you think it was luck that chewy and I found the Falcon if we can find it on our scanners the
[12:15] first order is not far behind something he felt was an imminent danger dragging the first order to them and yet he simply Parks it in the resistance base it's worth wondering whether he's incompetent or actually working for the
[12:29] first order at this point Finn then tells Leia that he needs help saving Ray and po explains that Finn is familiar with the weapon that destroyed the hosnian system Finn worked on the base Finn's familiar with the weapon that
[12:41] destroyed the hosnian system he worked on the base we're desperate for anything you can tell us so not only did he work on the Star Destroyer that housed Po in his time of need but he also worked on the Star Killer base right in time for
[12:54] the resistance to ask his expertise relating to it that's a pretty big coincidence what's more of a drastic realization however is Finn's idiocy as he has only shared information about the base from the moment he is asked as
[13:07] opposed to immediately despite its power its targets and his apparent care for innocent lives being taken this on top of the fact that we find out he worked on the supremacy meaning he worked on snoke's personal ship kylo's personal
[13:23] star destroyer and the Star Killer base he's the world's busiest and most convenient janitor in history and don't forget he apparently knows about the hyperspace tracker but there's no need to mention that though some might argue
[13:38] hide the fact that he's indeed a stormtrooper but with that known he still requires prompting before providing information that alone is entirely in congruent with his characterization he risked life and limb
[13:52] to save one man in the First Act crossing a vindictive and cruel faction in the process with far less at AK the idea that he wouldn't let the resistance know about this monstrosity and its intentions as soon as he's in contact
[14:05] with them or their allies because he's worried they might hurt him is absurd as they would much more likely treat him as royalty with the font of information he represents not to mention his leverage being that he attacked and killed
[14:18] several Stormtroopers he rescued the greatest pilot in the resistance and he brought bb-8 along with the map back to base when the first order explicitly do not want that to happen as a result of his choices we very well may have lost
[14:32] millions of lives that could have escaped with sudden evacuations ahead of the attack this is a tad frustrating what's interesting here is that none of this Clues any of them into the idea that Finn is a mole
[14:45] that Finn is a mole where what where's that mole I didn't see one Leia and Co are willing to trust everything that comes out of his mouth despite many of his recommendations coming in way too late when compared
[14:57] with his espoused values his plans amount to Han and chewy being sent alone to the Star Killer base nice to meet you Mo don't say mo I said Mo stop yes he was shot at with Po and he helped get bb-8 to the resistance but he also
[15:12] neglected to inform them of the base and he is now privy to all of the plans of the resistance and is leading your extremely important resources into a extremely important resources into a potential trap how do you know he isn't
[15:25] potential trap how do you know he isn't a spy bye Mo how can you trust him as much as you seemingly trust everyone in this room I guess Han and Leia just this room I guess Han and Leia just aren't as smart as they used to be M oh
[15:37] shut up anyway Finn says he wants to help considering the star Killa base is where Ry was taken but that's a bit odd how would Finn know that kylo took Ray to the base rather than his Destroyer that's where he took Po and snoke isn't
[15:52] on either of them so why wouldn't he assume she was taken to the supremacy is it because it doesn't exist yet is it because Finn has to know she's on the stalk killer base to have the drive to go there I'm just here to get R what a
[16:05] guess next up we see chewy getting some healing done since he took a shot from earlier and there's this [Music] exchange must be so brave the idea that this beastly muscle
[16:20] monster chewbaca takes a hit like a soldier in a battle and once he gets back to base for medical attention he tells his War Story to the nurse and we get to see the typical you have been so brave response that often prompts a
[16:32] humbling comment from the soldier that what they did was no different than what everyone ends up doing in these times of War only Chewbacca nods in agreement he does indeed think he was Brave and he was I find it Charming anyway we're told
[16:47] the map bb-8 provided is incomplete and that they will not be able to match any of the charted systems on record yes this massive number of planets spanning what looks like several Solar Systems is us less without a larger map for the
[17:00] resistance to plug it into despite the fact that the enormity of the known world has obviously been available for major factions for hundreds of thousands of years as well as all of these labeled planets floating around in this enormous
[17:15] piece of data just not being usable the main resistance archive supplied by support from the galactic Republic doesn't have an updated map of the universe okay this whole map thing is ridiculous but let's get some more info
[17:29] on it before a full breakdown BBH reveals an inactive R2D2 C3PO then explains that R2 probably wouldn't have the backup data to complete the map and the backup data to complete the map and let's stop right there2 has been in low
[17:43] let's stop right there2 has been in low power mode ever since Master Luke went away C3PO says it's unlikely that he will wake up and BBH size implying this is the kind of thing where I assume they made it so the cute new ball Droid
[17:58] and the old Tin Can droids were friends solely so we could see them beep and solely so we could see them beep and Boop together which would be fine but just like a situation to come it is frustrating because we've just been told
[18:10] a fan favorite character is in Peril in this case for no reason at all and the character here to care about it is one that was created by this movie it should probably be Leia that talks about this with C3PO or even Han by having bb8 feel
[18:25] remorse the audience is split on concerns what is their history is there a meaningful reason bb8 cares so much that we should know about or is it as simple as bb-8 wanting r2's data with no way to plug in for some reason and then
[18:40] of course what happened to R2-D2 an easy fix for this in isolation would be that bb8 knows the rest of the map is in R2-D2 but that would also require something of an explanation actually let's explore that for a moment shall we
[18:53] let's explore that for a moment shall we C3PO says it is unlikely that's the case dispelling the thought BBA had not the knowledge BBH simply thought it was possible but why this map is implied to be a guide to getting to the original
[19:07] Jedi Temple and everyone is almost certain that Luke decided to go there Luke therefore the map functions as a guide to getting to Luke Skywalker but who made this map where did this map come from why is it split in two pieces
[19:22] why would you assume that U2 has the bigger piece why did U2 enter a coma why didn't R2D2 use the map they had to help the resistance explore the Gap to narrow
[19:34] down the search for Luke who made the map is important because it creates further foundation for the story being told it's arguably one of the most structural pieces of information for the trilogy as we know it finding the planet
[19:48] finding Luke convincing him to help and his resulting actions justify a major portion of the events in these three films so for these events we need the stakes to be generated we need a reason why this map hasn't been found until now
[20:03] was it being protected by some Elder Jedi perhaps a collective loyal to the Jedi why did they end up releasing it did Luke create it well that can't be it because he wants to be left alone on U to die I came to this island to die
[20:18] leave this island now okay but he gave one of the pieces to Tekk but he doesn't want to be found the Jedi Temple is mostly untouched and Luke finding it is also unexplained due to it being so elusive as an audience it is difficult
[20:33] to understand how any of this comes together why should we care about any of this and how was this a result of what we already knew about the world many will now assume that this weird contrivance was solely created to keep
[20:46] Luke out of the first film in the trilogy which could work in theory as it gives more time to our new Heroes but the story demands a supported reason instead of an arbitrary restriction it requires more than a map that was split
[21:01] into two pieces and provided to different characters for reasons including a Droid that turned itself off all apparently orchestrated by a man who doesn't want to be found when plot breaks apart it can be significantly
[21:15] seeing the incompetence bleed into people people who aren't even on screen yet but let's continue why was it split in two to make it harder for enemies to
[21:27] read or even find strange when whoever created it provided each piece to allies that are both a part of the resistance it may have saved some time and safety by simply providing the completed map to the resistance the enemies aren't going
[21:42] to get it any more so by it being in one piece or two when providing both pieces to the same Source the Republic would have fallen regardless meanwhile what's adding to the confusion is anyone assuming R2-D2 has the remaining peace
[21:55] there has to be some form of a reason for this whatever that reason is can very likely help us understand why this thing was made and by who well if you look to a third party Source it becomes apparent that R2D2 downloaded the
[22:09] apparent that R2D2 downloaded the Empire's archive in the OT that explains why he has it now that obviously isn't in the film but why wouldn't the Republic and the resistance have a copy of the universe if R2-D2 had it during
[22:22] their 30-year Reign regardless third party information cannot be used to repair this story line though it can be interesting to explore as we've been over the whole thing is contradicted hardcore when compared to the events of
[22:35] the Last Jedi while being entirely confusing when left on its own on that confusing when left on its own on that note C3PO cannot confirm whether R2-D2 does or does not have the map he can only point to its low likelihood to
[22:49] clarify from their POV they are potentially sitting on both pieces to the Salvation of the war yet no one seems to care did Luke tell you guys that U had it or not good Lord find a way to boot him up
[23:04] hell strip him down get the hard drive plug him in if he's refusing to wake up like are we seriously going to ignore finding Luke and potentially saving the universe because we're respecting a droid's sleeping schedule which finally
[23:17] droid's sleeping schedule which finally gets us to R2-D2 going inactive hey droid don't shut off wake up which is apparently meant to protect the data that he has despite the film clearly establishing not a scene later that the
[23:31] first order already has that information so R2D2 is literally in a coma for no reason at all perhaps Luke told him to do this but why and why does he choose to wake up again at this very moment was that Luke as well is he flipping some
[23:47] that Luke as well is he flipping some switch over at o two perhaps we will never know regardless if they had enough of the map to tell where in the universe this large bit is just not the small bit then why not send Leia out to the
[24:00] missing area and try to feel Luke out with the force there were what 50 planets there just search them quick one by one this is a better strategy than sitting around and waiting for a Droid to turn up with the other piece by sheer
[24:14] luck this whole plot for finding Luke makes so little sense and you know it was slammed together in order to make a reason for him to be completely absent but able to return in full force once he was allowed to play with the other
[24:27] characters and they still didn't provide that privilege the first instinct is oh Carrie again and then you read the script for again and then you read the script for seven I'm in awe of the entire cast and
[24:40] aside from Daisy I look forward to working with them one perhaps JJ wrote it so that Luke did want to be found and that he was going
[24:55] to make a full return with the entire cast but that that's not the story that's been told it isn't what we have to work with and we can't even really to work with and we can't even really pretend we have an official Cannon it's
[25:07] held together with kindergarten glue crippling the characters the plot the world and the franchise it's so lovingly pilfered and so keep your brain turned off that wasn't a requirement for Star Wars once upon a time but it certainly
[25:22] is for now and the foreseeable future continuing on we are then privy to some grumbling between Han and Leia this conversation is the most substantive in the film in terms of giving us some missing character history
[25:36] we get an explanation for why Han is where he is why Han and Leia broke up why Ben solo turned to the dark side and how they can get him back to the light how they can get him back to the light all of that is given just under 150
[25:50] words Disney Star Wars despite sometimes showing potential in this regard does not take the time required to build anything be it consistent characters believable characters character relationships or the embarrassing World
[26:04] building this is compounded heavily when we have significant gaps for explanations missing stories when there are important scars on our heroes the best the films can do is tell us quickly and directly how we should feel because
[26:19] they have an aversion to earning it this approach has left such a chasm in continuity that frustration and confusion are inevitably going to boil up from the audience something of an obvious result if you develop characters
[26:33] when no one is looking something has happened to Lan and Leia the Beloved Heroes events that have reshaped their personalities and their focus in life bizarrely we didn't see these things so we absolutely have to have dialogue to
[26:48] fill in the Gap preferably full scenes with some flashbacks but instead we have one minute of dialogue that alone is a shame but let's see how JJ and kdan did
[27:00] reminded of him you think I want to forget him I want him back Han says he feels terrible for Leia as she is reminded of Ben whenever she sees him Leia counters in shock asking whether Han thinks she wants to forget their son
[27:16] when in reality she just wants him back this acts as an easy confirmation that Leia loves Ben despite his actions pretty straightforward for a character like Leia and in keeping with the themes of forgiveness redemp I and the bond for
[27:29] family in Star Wars as a franchise though the presence or adherence to a theme cannot simply wash away any criticism especially that which is in congruent with the theme in question this happens far less often with the
[27:42] force awakens but many people will jump to the theme because talking about component parts can only damage the idea at hand for example the greatest teacher failure is every hero overcame their failures or
[27:59] they all learn in their own way how to better themselves through failure unfortunately the story presents characters that regress break from their histories or learn themselves out of condemned behavior that morally Superior
[28:12] characters then commit to as a comparison you can approach something of a Blockbuster in the same vein like Infinity war and reach a conclusion without the broader actions of characters standing in the way you don't
[28:24] have to be commanded to respect a theme you don't see instead you can find it yourself decisions people have to make for the love they share or the principles they hold can cause so much more pain in the long run and a
[28:37] character like Thanos is what it takes to push past that same limit many of us have family is valued Above All Else by so many of the heroes in this story and family doesn't have to be blood it's the people you love the people you choose
[28:53] together they fight together they lose and perhaps it's together that they are able to come back regardless significant amounts of suffering would have been avoided had they made certain sacrifices a lesson Thanos learned long ago
[29:08] issues but it doesn't have to hide behind its theme it's supported by characters behaving consistently regarding who they love as opposed to being used like puppets for someone else's ideas at the time and as I said
[29:22] this isn't typically used to defend the force awakens but a thematic through line can indeed be found perhaps we can talk about that later Han couldn't have done anything there was too much Vader in kylo this is
[29:36] interesting as a second reference to V's influence on Han's son and it points to Han considering Vader nothing but a negative Force despite Vader's actions at his end and what Luke may have told him Han could have had several past
[29:50] experiences with Vader that defined his perspective of the Sith Lord and we're seeing that come through regardless he considers Vader's influence to be negative overall and Leia doesn't correct him on that Vader was
[30:03] catastrophic for many individual characters in many ways not to mention the universe but it's important to confirm this regardless it tells us that one of many possible Futures have taken place Vader's lasting reputation with
[30:17] everything considered is clear there's nothing more we could have done there's too much Vader in him unfortunately that's about all we get for Darth Vader's Legacy and what his impact on these characters means to them
[30:32] Vader's influence is given such a significance in the force awakens that it prompts an explanation The Last Jedi dropped it entirely for kylo Han and Leia only for the rise of Skywalker to argue it was Palpatine all along I have
[30:46] been every voice you have ever heard inside your head to be absolutely clear it was head to be absolutely clear it was nothing a trick a Mystery Box regardless
[31:00] Leia says she wanted kylo to train with Luke to prevent a fall and her mistake was sending him away implying perhaps that Leia sent kylo to Luke in the same way children are sent to boarding school I suppose we will never know if Leia
[31:13] knew that this happened all those years ago if I were here I would put some of the blame on Luke it's it's almost as though this event wasn't even considered when crafting this conversation and someone just made it up yes we have this
[31:27] vision but it could have been a result of anything either way they broke up and Hans says he went back to smuggling as it was what he knew best Lea did the same with the government we get all of this from a single line of dialogue yet
[31:40] the writers probably overlooked how much of an important detail it is the destruction of the solo family and the Exile of Han is sequestered to an afterthought despite it being pivotal to those who were invested in past stories
[31:54] not to mention those who wish to understand the villains of this one and that's not including how culturally iconic these characters are forcing the world to watch as you drool pieces of development out for them during the film
[32:06] while hemorrhaging it out during the gaps between there are so many details that aren't being covered but the conversation moves right along to whether Ben can be saved Han says it's too late and that even Luke couldn't
[32:18] bring him back but Leia says that Han is his father giving him much more reason to be able to pull off bringing kylo back layer than sights snoke as the reason kylo was seduced by the dark side implying that he is absolutely reachable
[32:33] this is starting to look rather similar to Anakin and Palpatine's relationship understand the dynamic and the journey snoke and Ben shared something that was invaluable to the OT and the prequels alike Vader and cuses relationship acted
[32:49] as one of several spines for the six films meanwhile kylo and snoke's relationship is only teased and in some cases outright contradict Ed for the audience either way that's the end of the
[33:08] conversation this is rough they essentially broke down 30 years of that are labeled as though they were still in some kind of notepad stage of the script as viewers I can almost guarantee that we want to see hano's
[33:23] faith in the cause as opposed to it simply being a fact we want to see what pulled him and L apart as opposed to being told he just gave up like he went back to doing what he knows best A desperate job he did to make money but
[33:38] wasn't he rich and legal would he not retire would he not find a way to explore his adventurous attitudes legally especially when he has more than enough money to support it all not to mention Leia just gave up her search of
[33:52] kylo her own son Han and Leia didn't try to mend their relationship was l doing nothing about all of this does he not love these people we have to accept all of that and then suddenly accept that Han can simply go and bring kylo back he
[34:08] Han can simply go and bring kylo back he just hasn't Leia and Han can and do speak to each other they just don't and haven't this puts us all in such a state of confusion we have no idea what's going on with the three main characters
[34:21] we care about in their sequel this is like walking into a scene from a TV show anything that came before and it's shocking it's inviting it's gripping for many but overall you don't really know what's going on or why you're here
[34:35] you're everything to me I'm nothing without you baby nothing ow sure that seems dramatic but without any context none of it is earned as a story you have nothing to work with
[34:50] you can't connect it with the material you have that it's supposed to be a continuation of it's like skipping from season 3 to season 8 of a TV show about characters you love and they are now completely different only you didn't
[35:03] skip from 3 to 8 you went from the season 6 finale to the first episode of season 7 with no flashbacks no Exposition dumps and no previously ons just some of the characters blurting out the State of Affairs in vague terms as
[35:17] though somebody simply wanted to tell their own story rather than build on someone else's an approach that may have seemed fruitful in the moment but when you see it done to your own word you might just change your
[35:35] you get you know um a group of people who are like coming up to you and and know it's going to be something that they're having their DVD collection and watching over and the way that I got into like you know Miller's Crossing
[35:49] maybe I don't know but uh and then there are other people who walk out just I mean literally saying that was the worst movie I've ever seen having having those two extremes to me is you know is the mark of the type of movie that I want to
[36:03] make the simple reality is that we're missing an entire Trilogy of events and captured and placed in kylo's interrogation chamber Finn was right she's been taken to the Star Killer base
[36:17] for whatever reason had she not many events would change you might even call it convenient come to think of it Star Wars the Force awakens has been stuffed full of convenience and inconvenience hasn't it in fact it seemed the most
[36:32] commonly cited issue in the script upon initial criticism pouring in that of rampant contrivances the idea being that events are slotted alongside each other arbitrarily one might refer to this process as and then storytelling as
[36:47] opposed to because of what should happen between every beat that you written down is either the word therefore or but this happens right and then this happens no
[36:59] no no it should be this happens and therefore this happens but this happens movies that you're just watching it's like this happened and then this happens in a movie just going what the am I watching this movie for just like this
[37:13] happen that's not a movie you know that's not a story like Trey said it's those those two but because therefore that gives you the causation between each beat and that makes that that's a story good luck for some bad luck for
[37:26] others convenience inconvenience coincidence all leading to the payoffs there is a distinct lack of cause and effect there are very few times where the audience can piece events together with information they have at hand ah
[37:42] Empire launched thousands of probe droids throughout the Galaxy or because of everything Luke went through it only makes sense that he has this newfound concentration and attitude or oh of course he stayed on the Death Star
[37:57] Rebellion as a significant threat evacuate in Our Moment of Triumph I think you overestimate their chances these events don't happen arbitrarily when slaughtered into their fantasy world Tarin chose to stay at his station
[38:11] despite evidence of its weakness being found because he was filled with a sense of Pride and accomplishment yeah remember that he was one of the highest ranking members of the galactic government the pathetic Rebels would
[38:24] never have the capacity to destroy the Empire's superat weapon cause and effect even the prequels understood this to a far greater degree than the sequels with Order 66 in plague hiad Mundi was betrayed by his entire Squad of clones
[38:39] in a hostile land during battle he wasn't going to survive even if he's a Jedi it's cause and effect and perhaps more tragically he never knew the result of the Droid attack on the wookies # mourn the Mundy these moments aren't
[38:54] based on good or bad luck they are locked in place place by what has been established previously excluding minor variations nothing else could happen because of what the story has told us about these people and the world around
[39:07] them contrivance or luck is used as one of if not the most common writing Cop comparable to giving your story a little push in the direction you want it to stories because they can be
[39:22] inconsequential which tends to work just fine in fact most of the time they are in a offensive only affecting something small once this is very much like real life everyone has those things happen at certain points sometimes you have to
[39:36] stop and ask just what the odds of that happening were the thing is every effect does happen in life as a result of a cause it's simply not easy for us as individuals to know similarly the characters in the story don't need
[39:50] access to all of the information but with us as viewers of this world we are given great access to information specific L for us to understand the cause and effect things don't simply happen at random in the case of
[40:03] Storytelling the writer not only constructed the world and thus has the answer they can choose whether to give it to the audience you are in charge of how often these things happen and to what degree they impact coming events
[40:16] unfortunately it's quite the drug you will race toward that particular payoff this writing tool can get you there practically free of charge and once once you pop you can't stop the payoff will be made as dramatic as possible to
[40:32] distract the audience from how many corners were cut to reach it writers May begin to stretch it so far that their very foundations begin to crumble away and the payoff you were so desperate to create is significantly damaged instead
[40:45] of building the events one by one to depict the character-driven story that is true to the characters themselves to earn that earn that payoff what Yoo
[40:59] other often more memorable content will put the work in over time with strong consistent development and make that payoff absolutely and utterly emotionally crippling what I would call incredible writing has at least
[41:13] something to do with creativity tempered by consistency you get a little crazy you let your brain pictures spill right out onto the page and then you render some incredible ideas from the bog of thoughts only to temper them into novels
[41:28] scripts and screenplays redrafted into structured works of Storytelling writers are often plagued with problems if they are building a script from scratch while having a shackle of plot points in future to account for as opposed to a
[41:41] more natural set of events to work toward for example the force awakens toward for example the force awakens writers were Shackled to this Finn has to escape being a stormtrooper while saving po Ray has to meet Finn and they
[41:54] have to get to the Falcon and they have to meet Han Leia has to be leading a resistance force that are crippled compared to the current enemy faction born of the Empire Han has to be killed in front of Ry by his son Rey must beat
[42:09] kylo in a fight and Ry has to meet Luke at the end the challenge was to complete all of these goals while crafting a story that could cause it naturally based on the character's decisions so you can work on a script and generate a
[42:23] everything important about a person and their will that would facilitate this journey or you can give up and choose the root of coincidence which means the world will simply bend and break to allow your characters and events every
[42:38] change you wish to see by pure luck somehow Palpatine returned from the dead and with a focus on that writers might just forget to pour human traits
[42:50] into characters since at that point you don't require a production of personal drives the progress a story the coin incidence takes care of everything established rules and even your own set of rules can get in the way of what
[43:03] you're writing toward which can automatically encourage you to reach into the infinite pocket of luck and pull out a miracle but to work with those rules to get the story you wanted while sticking to what you and many
[43:16] others have written before you that's the sign of a hardworking writer we've covered a lot of conveniences already so you know which ones I'm talking about and I will try and summarize it at the end but for now let's get clear on the
[43:30] subject in a universe of possibilities can the Falcon end up in Palpatine's granddaughter's workplace by chance yes it can and what are the odds of that extremely unlikely is it possible for Finn to crash land just outside of Ray's
[43:47] Village to then bump right into her being she is the one who is currently taking care of bb-8 the very Droid that Finn has been tasked with finding for the resistance yeah yes it's possible but not even remotely likely is it
[44:01] possible for Finn to want to kidnap Captain fasma to lower the Shields and and she does it for them without hesitation oh we haven't even done that yet yes it's possible but my goodness that sounds almost impossible so when we
[44:16] throughout every moment of the film's connective tissue it can absolutely obliterate your suspension of disbelief there will be an abundance of people in the audience saying oh come on really
[44:28] when events take place because luck would have it that way and every significant entity is thrown together as though they're in a tiny sandbox you can feel as though you are simply watching someone tell you about what they would
[44:40] like to see in a Star Wars story rather than believing a story is unfolding this is often what people refer to when insulting work by labeling it fanfiction fan and writing fiction nor is it strictly intended to insult the process
[44:55] of writing fan fiction in general great work can come from that it's more about the idea that a fan will be motivated strictly by a love of the universe rather than a love tempered by a history of writing in the field a person with
[45:09] Talent experience and accomplishment being paid hundreds of millions to professionally craft a meaningful story while respecting the universe as much as a fan would unfortunately such a notion has been completely squashed in modern
[45:24] times and I would happily take the work of any fan fiction over the prepackaged and approved nightmare slurry pumping onto the screen from people who barely remember character names or motivations these days we watch as the writer says
[45:39] they did this and then they did this and then this and then they did this and it was so good and then they did this comparatively the events in the story the driving force of the plot can be a direct result of meaningful decisions
[45:52] made from the characters accurate to their development which typically provides a sense of cathis in the audience everyone is behaving in ways you understand as a result of learning about them in Prior experiences this is
[46:05] akin to real life when it comes to particular subjects you won't even bother clarifying positions from friends because you know what they will say this is what we do as human beings we learn patterns we create predictions to rely
[46:19] on for example Luke leaves Yoda because he wants to save his friends rather than complete his training training that would would Grant him more power and focus you could have known this was his decision well before he made it as a
[46:32] result of seeing him interact with so many loved ones up to this point this many loved ones up to this point this trait pushes him to bpin to Vader character-driven cause and effect comparatively Ray leaves Luke because
[46:45] well she needs to have her face off with kylo and snoke she doesn't even know why she's at the temple in the first place I need someone to show me my place in all this so they abricate an intimate connection to kylo bafflingly and that
[47:00] means she's got to go save him that's a tad ridiculous because she despised him in the story moments ago for killing her father figure Ry was the last person who thought kylo could turn to the light and now she is essentially his sponsor this
[47:15] suddenly pushes her to the supremacy and to snoke to complete the plot line getting her back to the team this is not cause and effect now many people will usually say that the other films in The Saga have plenty of contrivances in fact
[47:29] it's a downright staple of Star Wars why not have more of it well because it sounds like we've built an awkward dichotomy here the interesting option of no convenience versus as many as possible when in reality we're dealing
[47:42] with a huge scale complete with the variables of frequency and impact not to mention that citing the presence of these issues within another property as an excuse to have more could be applied to essentially every floor you could
[47:55] come up with but I mean let's be real for a second what story doesn't have for a second what story doesn't have convenience why can't we excuse it mhm well in the first season of Fargo a show I do indeed recommend for the most part
[48:10] we see a series of events unfold after two men happen to meet in a hospital The Story begins with one of them receiving a broken nose while the other is in a car crash thus they both require medical attention this meeting was pretty
[48:24] unlikely considering they had to be injured at similar times and then land on the chairs right next to each other in the waiting room while also deciding to go to the hospital in the same exact time frame from their accidents now this
[48:36] particular meeting leads to many deceptions betrayals and deaths that's a deceptions betrayals and deaths that's a lot we get all kinds of Destruction for the people of Faro throughout the season the story unravels on top of that chance
[48:51] meeting in episode 1 you have setups and payoffs everywhere characters in pursuit of others thanks to this original event or rather General drama flowing from this beginning point the interesting thing with this example is that Fargo is
[49:05] chock full of coincidences some are small some are large but they rarely change a character's motivations and intelligence much the same can be said of The Suicide Squad a story that relies heavily on luck many of the key payoffs
[49:20] in that story would not be possible if events ran as they should simultaneously it's a story about a man who can use nanotech to create all kinds of Weaponry ending up in a prison with a shark a rat catcher a peac maker and a polka dot man
[49:36] to then be sent to ca mtis to battle a giant starfish that sounds pretty unlikely the point here if it's not become obvious is twofold on one hand we have a contrivance to begin the tale a selection of seemingly unlikely events
[49:53] coalescing in the same way winning the lottery will often be perceived as from the winner only that's why we're here it's the event among all events that dragged attention to it for us to now watch as we don't know what happens next
[50:07] the logic is simple it would be unlikely for you to win the lottery however it is a certainty that someone will win the lottery and so eventful stories often begin there these people were the ones that ended up in this scenario anything
[50:22] happening to them subsequently in their favor without reason would be convenient and vice versa if things were to be arbitrarily difficult for them with the information we are supplied taking us to the other hand where we have
[50:37] contrivances that litter every story element after the inciting event for each of these properties allowing the story the writer wanted to exist to continue to exist inciting incidents will often be events that if dropped in
[50:51] the middle of other stories without support or Reason would be as destructive as contrived es of similar nature but they are specifically the beginning of the story and the why of the story being told compared to any
[51:04] other conclusion don't use contrivances if you must use them for inciting incidents and if entirely desperate reduce their frequency and impact to the reduce their frequency and impact to the best of your ability now coincidences
[51:18] happen all the time in life just the other day I heard of a girl named Laura buckon she released a balloon with her name on it and it Tred for 140 miles only to drop down and be collected by another girl of the same age called wait
[51:33] for it Laura buckton stories that have no convenience or inconvenience for characters would actually be a tad unrealistic but that's more than a simple appeal to reality things get worse and things get better sometimes by
[51:49] complete luck but only from their point of view an event can come across as audience was given the mechanics ahead of time to see why these events occur
[52:01] why it's not luck that caused it at all the writer is in complete control of just how much information the audience has access to as well as how much information the characters have access to I'm sure Vader thought Luke was given
[52:14] an incredible convenience in having Han save his life but we as the audience know why and how that happened now I wouldn't pretend to know how all things come together in the grand scheme of this world but it seems pretty unreal
[52:29] that deciding to record a rant about a movie on a whim while attaching that audio to a watermelon led to a career and an opportunity to meet so many incredible people of course it all seems incredibly lucky when viewed from a
[52:43] particular lens but when a writer abuses random chance over and over creating an entire story out of it nothing can have weight no decision can be meaningful every character is a simple puppet lacking agency in a caring rigid world
[52:59] that will only Follow The Writer's desires of course you might be saying all characters are someone's puppets but that's the entire point of strong consistent writing it will convince us even for a second that these people are
[53:15] real this world is real and when it hits the credits we're taken back out ready to share what we loved this is why a certain death at the end of season 1 of game of thr drones is so impactful yet seamless it had to happen when you know
[53:31] the characters involved and what was said nothing else could happen cause and effect in action once again no matter how disagreeable or painful but I suppose you could have added a convenience of any kind like a ship
[53:46] appearing out of nowhere or a sudden immunity to Weaponry or sudden dramatic Insanity she used their innocence as a weapon against me
[53:58] when you wish to keep characters or lose them for reasons that do not relate to the story being told rather they relate to generating interest and money or couldn't care less about their involvement to begin with and failed to
[54:12] drive them you inevitably build your house on Sand but you know what who is to complain if it was possible you can say it was just lucky and we all get lucky here and there so it's fine these conveniences all have room to follow
[54:27] cause and effect if you read some novels or accept some fan theories everything slots into place people site the force as if it explains everything that ever seems shaky in this universe something
[54:39] that has begun to infect the MCU as a whole as K is now the reason anything happened the way it did the force makes all of these things happen and therefore it is cause and effect the problem is that the particularly unlikely things
[54:53] that did happen were some of the best EV events these characters could possibly have desired telling me that an unseen powerful magic is just making it all come together is not only extremely lazy writing it sets to make us ask where the
[55:08] force was during many other events besides the typical audience member will not find it anywhere near as personally satisfying to see difficult storytelling situations solved by an absurd level of luck you do typically find that setups
[55:23] and payoffs are a tried and true method of delivering heart-wrenching drama especially when they slot right in with the foundations of the story The Force awakens has several foundational writing issues and the overreliance on
[55:36] convenience is one of the biggest at best you simply believe that luck will always resue your favorite characters and if not a sense of betrayal May seep in at worst you won't believe even for a
[55:50] consequence and the entire aspect of consequence and the entire aspect of escapism will fall apart yes I know it's difficult it takes more time to remain consistent it costs you many resources
[56:02] to create a story that is pushed by characters and their actions but great characters and their actions but great writing exists as compared to forms that are indeed cheaper quicker and easier
[56:15] the highest of any discipline requires humans to expand their limits and striving toward that is an admirable goal whether successful or not when someone tells you there are no mistakes in writing that there's no way to
[56:28] improve because no piece of art succeeds at anything more so than any other and thus everything is a masterpiece in and of itself focus on the argument rather than the conclusion the conclusion is a wonderful thought one designed to make
[56:43] you feel fantastic about your work to push you further along as everything you are making has an incredible impact as a piece of work not to mention an immutable personal meaning alternatively you maintain that mutable personal
[56:57] meaning but you come to terms with something lacking in your work and which of these perspectives sounds easier to adopt well in place of the former and latter perspective I offer the idea that you don't take solace in always having a
[57:11] great work despite its potential failures rather imagine what it means to hold what could be the biggest stepping stone to your magnum opus that you break it down find what was lacking and learn from it building yourself above the
[57:26] structural failings to then make something incredible keep at it redraft fall in love with the worlds you create and as long as you take care of the fiction it will in turn take care of the fantasy the audience so desperately
[57:41] clamors for things that are possible remain possible and things that are remain possible and things that are impossible remain
[57:56] wakes up in kylo's interrogation room and asks where her friends are kylo and asks where her friends are kylo responds you mean the murderers traitors and thieves you call friends I was always interested by this line because
[58:09] tells us what kylo thinks of his opposition calling them thieves more than likely relates to the map smuggling since he considers the map property of the first order calling them traitors
[58:21] would obviously be in relation to Finn and possibly the past exploits of of the characters from the OT but murderers that is a very interesting way to refer to the opposing faction when of course Kyo has engaged in what any sane person
[58:36] would have to describe as outright murder himself all the same this line implies he has ideals and these people are acting against them forcing his hand regardless of his parents' involvement we had to make him a person so we
[58:52] thought of him more of of of trying to be right that he thinks it's less let us right cuz I think when you're right you feel morally Justified to do whatever feel morally Justified to do whatever you want to get what what it is um that
[59:05] you're after I understand where you're coming from Adam kylo certainly has character so let's explore that kylo ran is very definitive in the vast majority of his actions to this point driven to what he thinks is absolutely right an
[59:20] unwavering faith in his supreme leader snoke and the first order considering he is the son of two of our heroes and yet still feels this way it would be wonderful to get a little more detail he's not just sum a attack dog right he
[59:35] believes in this stuff kylo's journey is touted as the greatest character writing in the Star Wars saga by many and while I understand people mistaking great emoting for Great Character you guys seriously need to calm down we barely
[59:51] know anything substantive about kylo we are not very far away from the big biggest emotional payoff of the film and all we know is that this guy is hanen Leia's son he was following the light side of the force he was trained by Luke
[1:00:06] and then seduced by snoke now he is one of the most powerful villains in the current Universe killing everything that gets in his
[1:00:20] Luke and Leia and who was he before he changed how did snoke seduce him with everything we know about our OT characters why is kylo immediately made snoke's Apprentice was there ever anyone else under snoke's training is the rule
[1:00:35] else under snoke's training is the rule of two still vaguely a thing how does snoke fit into the lives of Our Heroes what was the training like for kylo considering where he came from and what he was taught before the film will ask
[1:00:48] that I care about the coming scenes and kylo's involvement in them but I don't know him at all we've missed substantial amount of Storytelling you see this isn't just a problem for Leia Luke and H's characters becoming different people
[1:01:02] in between films we have brand new characters who are deeply involved with our classic ones and we don't know what they mean to them Beyond a handful of lines and assumptions when you have a clean slate a lot less context is
[1:01:16] required compared to something built on Decades of Storytelling the vast majority of the relationships in the original film were established and developed within the time frame of the story itself meanwhile this film has a
[1:01:28] significant amount to catch up on while struggling to flesh out its own new relationships as well this is why scenes like these held massive weight they gave so much flesh to characters that were coming into their own while developing
[1:01:42] bonds with other people these scenes show us why these characters care about each other they are foundational for future events to have the chance to hit as hard as reality in a new hope all of the developmental scenes were simply
[1:01:56] replaced with one conversation between Han and Leia outlining how much of a friend Luke is in the gaps between scenes therefore justifying Han's choice in the climax no we saw them grow and then we felt the connection Han had to
[1:02:10] Luke that urged him to save his friend and the Galaxy the common expression I'm and the Galaxy the common expression I'm alluding to here is show don't tell and despite some interpretations being wholly narrow-minded it's a fantastic
[1:02:23] rule of thumb that the force awakens seem to know about but gave up on when dealing with additional drafts kylo is extremely important to the solo family but we can only be told very quickly why that is it's his label he is their son
[1:02:38] meaning without putting any additional leg work in meaning they learned nothing from their predecessors beyond the from their predecessors beyond the surface I am your
[1:02:50] [Music] father considering the payoff that is soon to come we needed to see see how kylo grew up what he values in the dark side how Han and Leia fell apart while they raised him and what that meant to
[1:03:04] him all of it grants meaning to so much more when he ignites that lightsaber we can think back to every memory of their Journey instead of a 150w conversation between these two but MOA that's not possible Disney can't
[1:03:20] make stories for a time that's passed we're going to jump right into that meta subject in the conclusion for now you may think it's a fair excuse to Simply say that kylo and Han's relationship was narrowly developed because we have
[1:03:33] progressed past the era relevant for portraying that story in our own world but that excuse doesn't work for characters that get introduced and developed in this very installment nor does it hold weight regardless Disney
[1:03:46] Star Wars films have a strong pattern of botching characters or leaving them woefully undetailed there is an attempt to excuse the sketchy development of kylo through a Time skip but how do you reconcile that assessment alongside
[1:03:59] other characters that have the exact same developmental problems bear with me family I'll never know but my first battle I made a choice
[1:04:11] I was ashamed of what I was but I'm done with the first order I'm never going back this is a person who has shown some character traits in scenes but a lot of the ideas are dropped or confused in the sequel this is a person who is tied to
[1:04:25] the the newer Heroes but were not given substantive scenes to connect them aside from their relationship descriptions this person shows conflict and their own what they value on either side of the force or the galactic battle this is a
[1:04:40] person who has shared about one significant scene with Han yet we are expected to be entirely moved by every action taken between them as a father child Dynamic now let me repeat myself but change the visuals this is a person
[1:04:54] who has shown some characters trates in scenes but a lot of the ideas are dropped or confused in the sequel this is a person who is tied to the newer scenes to connect them aside from their relationship descriptions this person
[1:05:08] shows conflict and their own values but we never get to know why or what they value on either side of the force or the galactic battle this is a person who has shared about one significant scene with Han yet we are expected to be entirely
[1:05:21] moved by every action taken between them as a father child Dynamic these these are the problems with kylo's development on screen though many excuse them by the fact of most of it being in a past we cannot consume and does not get alluded
[1:05:34] to therefore they did as much as they could though Disney Star Wars has consistent character writing issues regardless of limitations and the reason people love kylo is because they generate his story for him they write in
[1:05:48] the gaps while waiting for the bigger set pieces Disney Star Wars money can provide maybe he and Han would have many minor disagree agreements that erupted into huge meltdowns that destroyed any chance of love being shared between them
[1:06:01] maybe the divorce that Han and leer endured was often seen as a result of kylo acting as a burden for them both maybe kylo and Tekk shared a mentor-like promised kylo would happen in his life turned out to be a lie so many juicy
[1:06:17] pieces of potential drama that we can imagine but we're not shown any of it nor have we been told about it outside of one minute of dialogue and what more do we get three flashbacks with one making the other two redundant and
[1:06:30] that's once we've seen two of these films the conclusion is kylo is just as blandly written as Ry but people don't tend to feel that way but why Ben solo provide an instant connection to the
[1:06:45] people we've been endeared to in previous substantive stories boosting his character without actually having to do anything this practice has become invasive for modern iteration combin that with Adam dri's acting the
[1:06:58] ability to convey such powerful and visceral emotions despite the writing and we have the illusion of Great Character no no you're still holding on Let Go traitor
[1:07:17] because she has no connection to anything beyond Palpatine I guess and I mean Daisy wasn't exceptionally varied in her approach for most most of her scenes exemplified by the moment she pulls off an incredible feat with the
[1:07:30] facial expression of waiting for the bus kylo isn't contradictory in the writing at this point like other characters already are he is simply oscillating aggressively and eventually you realize that's Hollow forgive me I feel it
[1:07:47] again the pull to the light Hollow characters that facilitate enormous payoffs are cheap by definition it takes nothing to create them place them and have them choose anything in particular it would also seem they have a small
[1:08:01] halflife compared to layered characters to the point that kylo Ren is already being forgotten just years after the conclusion of the trilogy that tells his story if you get some superficial elements just right then I suppose it
[1:08:14] audience who aren't paying closer attention but even that won't stand the test of time if you do commit to a sort of production line way of Storytelling it becomes very corporate and superficial iteration marred by
[1:08:29] ignorance is inevitable and hell it's not like you didn't have the time for these important intimate moments we had a few of them at first but once Ry met Finn there was a significant drop in character development and a significant
[1:08:43] rise in action-packed escapes you got dog fighting alien chases dog fighting massive explosions fever dreams and dog fighting it's as though they couldn't wait to put as much action on screen as possible as if their understanding of
[1:08:57] Star Wars only went that far but action scenes will mean a lot more to an audience if they care about the people in them you still want to kill me that happens when you're being hunted by a creature in a mask kylo declares that Ry
[1:09:11] still wants to kill him he was probably referencing this and he finds her disapproval of him amusing I imagine because from his perspective it must be interesting to be called a creature by someone you consider a c Criminal on
[1:09:26] several counts once Ry points out that kylo is in a mask however he removes
[1:09:38] young and very plain there's nothing traditionally monstrous about his face at all in fact he's not all that intimidating that's the interesting surprise of kylo Ren up to this point we were just assuming he's yet another evil
[1:09:53] seasoned Sith but now we're taken aback he's not aged he's clearly inexperienced and he looks like he may even be a victim in all of this he almost has the presence of a Disney prince especially with the style of hair making the
[1:10:07] audience second guess themselves of course it shouldn't actually be any surprise because we already know he's Han's son meaning he is more than likely the chance to participate in many battles this was a shock and an
[1:10:22] undeniably malleable canvas to work from he is different from the villains we've seen previously his character writing is weak but the impact of him being just a boy is striking it adds many layers to a potential motivation he is at a
[1:10:37] manipulable age he can't have a definitive perspective on all of this can he and that's what we can explore if the writers should want
[1:10:51] to yeah what was your advice don't go through the crew like wildfire officially advice kylo then places his helmet in a
[1:11:04] large tray of Ash and many speculated on what this was supposed to be but as it happens we have the explanation directly from the director that shot by the way was originally shot for the scene where he
[1:11:16] off the idea was those are the ashes of his victims the ashes of his victims the idea was those are the ashes of his victims what the [ __ ] really I guess that's an
[1:11:29] intimidation tactic but if he doesn't inform his subject then how would it intimidate how would they even know I can't help but laugh at this kylo is shoving his helmet into a tray of Ashes from people he killed this scene gave
[1:11:43] him a level of intimidation but the ashtray is kind of embarrassing like Wow you went to the trouble of incinerating and collecting the ashes of your enemies to then place a little structure here in in order to scare me when I've already
[1:11:57] seen you're capable of this now you're just edgy like Shadow the Hedgehog edgy Shadow the Hedgehog's character model wow look at all of those edges it all starts with this a jewel containing the ultimate power and it's become
[1:12:11] increasingly clear why they would have cut that explanation from the movie with the victim's ashtray idea and thought it sounded super cool but I am simply blown away that they kept the visual but didn't feel the need to
[1:12:25] explain it for both the subject and the audience as it stands this is just a helmet ashtray of which I am sure all of you have no memory of anyway kylo then asks about bb-8 despite deciding to actively leave it on the planet
[1:12:40] highlighting yet another question why did you wait until she woke up to begin the torture and why are you explaining it to her instead of just doing it this action does not require her cooperation kylo then declares bb8 is carrying the
[1:12:54] piece of the navigational chart that they need to find Luke Skywalker this because they have the rest in their archives from the Empire which again why is R2-D2 keeping it shut down the enemies already have the bigger piece
[1:13:10] you're protecting it from no one kylo then says that Ry somehow convinced the Droid to show her the map when she's just a scavenger which is interesting considering the rise of Skywalker personally I love the idea that that bb8
[1:13:25] was Palpatine's personal beach ball and Ray Palpatine blood convinced the little loyal Droid to show her the map at least that's what this line is implying within the context of the trilogy it is infinitely hilarious that JJ's work is
[1:13:39] now crapping all over JJ's work regardless kylo knows Ray was with Han Solo and bb8 was more likely enticed to show it to him with her as a bystander you'd think that kylo could figure that out but fine I guess he then says he can
[1:13:53] take whatever he wants and Begins the forc torture we saw earlier this allows him to assess her character and he makes it clear that Ry wants to explore the world and that keeps her up at night considering her nature of being trapped
[1:14:07] on jaku this in addition to Rising Han Solo as a father figure which is utterly insulting to the audience these are the two goals we had earlier discussed but as was discovered the goal to explore
[1:14:21] has already been dropped Ray doesn't talk about it or make choices based on it from here on out leaving the Han Solo connection as her main form of characterization this is quite a shame as she should be in an almost constant
[1:14:34] sense of wonder does anyone remember there being further moments of her appreciating the worlds she visits after this major one well there was the one scene and it was actually brilliantly constructed she appreciated rain because
[1:14:48] she may never have experienced it before but like every other piece of continuity in that film it was thrown away moments later in this case by her ability to swim this aspect of her character is made very
[1:15:01] strong during the opening to the force awakens but there's no development payoff or conclusion to it outside of these two minor appreciations across three movies what we should be seeing as a consequence of establishing this about
[1:15:15] her is rayed desire to explore pulling her away from her duty to the resistance or rather her duty to the people payoffs could include her inability to deal with situations in these new places her
[1:15:27] confusion on Customs rules and travel in what are simply alien worlds could give her a breakdown she could panic in not understanding the safety and comfort of her surroundings that she's been so used to for her entire life but most of all
[1:15:41] offer her the freedom and money to explore in exchange for help and she has no investment in the resistance parental issues that could also cause
[1:15:55] some hard-hitting character moments unfortunately that is not the direction they took regardless kylo says this carrying a section of a navigational chart and we have the rest recovered from The Archives of the Empire but we
[1:16:08] the map it's in map it's in there and now you'll give it to me so if they have indeed got the rest of the map and there's only this missing piece why
[1:16:21] wouldn't they have already scoured that missing area with their arm or better yet send kylo around until he can sense Luke or the temple I'm sure it wouldn't take long considering your resources do you understand now that both of the
[1:16:34] active factions are just deeply stupid in a metric multitude of manners for the sake of the plot especially the first order since I don't know you could make use of your vast vast resources and send a series of probe droids to search for
[1:16:50] Luke I feel like someone did that at some point before when search an entire outside of that though this means kylo is going to torture the information out
[1:17:05] of Ry like we saw with po earlier but how in the world does this make any sense by comparison with po kylo wanted the location of the map he managed to torture the thought of Po having chosen to hide it in a BB unit out of his head
[1:17:19] almost as though he's tapping into their thoughts so what in the world is he doing with Ray the the process would be get the map from her head and put it into the archive okay but Ry only saw the map from one angled point of view
[1:17:33] she can't possibly have all of that in her memory secondly Ry has never left jaku she has zero familiarity with space charts or exploration how in the world would she know what she's even looking at or how to comprehend the planets and
[1:17:47] their relationships all she would remember is a jumbled mess of cool blue lights third how accurate is kylo's memory stealing going to be exactly is he going to write all of this down is he going to copy it from his brain to a USB
[1:18:01] or is he an expert reader of blurry map memories and finally if this was his whole plan to try his luck at copying Ray's angled smudged jumbled mess of blue tinted memories into his own head to then try and connect it to the
[1:18:15] remnants of the Empire's archive to then find Luke Skywalker why wouldn't he have made it a hell of a lot easier for himself and skipped this entire process by you know kidnapping the Droid as well his current plan is extremely risky
[1:18:29] compared and let's not forget the fact that his supreme leader told him not scenes ago they have to stop BBH from reaching the resistance because what was going to happen if they didn't if Skywalker
[1:18:43] Returns the new Jedi will rise so we're forgetting that and we're choosing a more difficult route only for what to end up happening failure Ray is escapes kylo and he didn't get the Droid pathetic if only he
[1:18:59] chose the action that was more pragmatic more in character and followed the actual orders he was given but then we wouldn't have a film what proceeds during the forc torture scene however is not what we got the first time where
[1:19:13] Oscar Isaac made it look as though someone was pushing a knife into his facial expressions providing some Choice sound
[1:19:28] effects no no I didn't edit that in it all seems a little silly with this delivery but look at how Adam Driver manages to utterly Ace his reaction to manages to utterly Ace his reaction to losing his grip on
[1:19:44] compare these two in terms of performance when one is so much more don't know if I have the strength to do it and the other is Daisy Ridley but like I said in the previous critique she can perform it could very well be down
[1:19:58] to the direction now before the connection ends Ry says something to kylo you're afraid that you will never be as strong as Darth Vader this is the third and final
[1:20:12] reference to Vader in this film and it once again compounds the importance of Vader to kylo's character Ray was able to see that Vader is the center of kylo's world in a matter of seconds it defines him Vader's power presence and
[1:20:26] Legend is incredibly important to kylo's development naturally the audience would connection but it's dropped in the sequel and explained as a trick in the final installment this was bait and it
[1:20:39] was some of the most frustrating bait in media because it raised so many questions for Anakin where has he been why is he goding Ben to the dark side what would Luke say about all of this how does any of this work instead of
[1:20:53] exploring the connection or answering any questions we are left with nothing there is no development for that despite it being the climax for two scenes in this film it's a shame but it's a criticism levied at both JJ and Ryan
[1:21:07] criticisms that you read that you may feel is now kind of fair no no moving on we have one last and quite famous criticism to check out regarding this scene the most destructive moment for anything character or plot related is of
[1:21:22] anything character or plot related is of course Ray defeating kylo in the force mind torture reading thingy I have no idea what I'm supposed to call it but kylo who has been trained by the greatest powers on both sides of the
[1:21:34] force in the Galaxy managed to be outdone in terms of the force by a person with absolutely no experience with it it not only deals a massive blow to the importance of training and working towards something greater than
[1:21:48] yourself while putting into question the quick route to power being the dark side it adds yet another tick to raise ability counter and why to get the plot moving you see we have writing problems to be solved we need to protect the
[1:22:03] information related to the map from kylo we needed to reveal that Ray is significantly Force sensitive and we need to give her a chance to escape while showing that kylo is vulnerable all of these things can be difficult to
[1:22:16] achieve from a writing perspective so let's just give Rey an ability that will nail all of them in one go anyway we cut to snow chewing out kylo for losing a battle of the minds with Ray and of course we aren't going to get any
[1:22:30] additional information to justify that that's just how it be kylo describes Rey as untrained yet strong and this will reflect her future performance in both tlj and Tross performing incredible Feats in one while having been given no
[1:22:45] training aside from a singular lesson on why she shouldn't become a Jedi and the retroactive training can help make sense of the narrative
[1:22:59] tomorrow at dawn three lessons oh and yes there were supposed to be three lessons imparted from Luke but we only saw one in action we know one of them was sequestered to the deleted scenes so what about the
[1:23:11] third and I think they mentioned there's three lessons and people were keeping count wait a minute we're missing a lesson he says don't intervene because you're not going to be here next week when they come back and and strike again
[1:23:23] these Marauders it seems callous for him to just ignore it and not the old Luke would be like Ray he'd be you know lightsaber blazing oh they forgot an entire lesson was there another deleted scene so about that third lesson Johnson
[1:23:39] acknowledges it's not directly addressed in the movie but says there are things about the movie that fans can choose to interpret as his final instruction to Ry he forgot to write and film a third lesson in his own movie after specifying
[1:23:53] there would be one to then and ask you the audience to interpret one man the magic of movie making there may very well be other third party explanations for this much in the same way an attempt was made to explain Ray's power
[1:24:07] especially after what we just saw but for those who don't know the mental connection snoke opened for Ry and kylo poured his training and knowledge into her head she gained a strong understanding of combat and the force
[1:24:21] immediately this happens in tlj so not only does it fail to explain her power beforehand it's a desperate grasp at straws regardless and it's what happens when the writers of the novelizations have to make up for the mistakes of the
[1:24:35] multi-million doll writers that came before them I mean the poor lad came to the conclusion that to get anywhere near explaining Ray's source of power it makes the most sense to Simply have her download them from someone else taking
[1:24:49] inspiration from I don't know the Matrix Mr Anderson Mr Anderson no not that one holy mother of
[1:25:05] way the writer's hands were tied to the movies and in an attempt to repair the script they simply poed more holes if you can simply instant teach students the force and combat skills as long as you connect them with an experienced
[1:25:19] Jedi you basically blow open all of the Jedi training that has been established up to this point perhaps it's lucky we tend to ignore third party sources moving on hux walks into the room and lets snoke know the resistance have the
[1:25:32] map to Skywalker and it's all kylo's fault Ren believed it was no longer valuable to us as a result the Droid has most likely been returned to the hands of the enemy they may have the map already which yes he's right and we'll
[1:25:46] never know why in fact had hu's been anywhere near the operation on takodana he never would have allowed this to happen unfortunately he was a way just top-notch writing though you have to appreciate kylo not wearing his mask in
[1:25:59] this scene because he took it off to speak with Ray hux then provides a surprise visit and this leaves kylo exposed in that he clearly doesn't like to be viewed without it Adam Driver once again performing quite well hux says
[1:26:12] they have a target for the resistance base and snoke orders their destruction hopefully achieving it before they can reach Skywalker so how did they find it Well one idea is that the first order scanned for the Falcon the ship is at
[1:26:26] risk at all times as Han pointed out then there's the hyperspace tracker that would mean the Falcon and every transport on takodana are locked in however to be fair the Falcon would have been tracked as early as jaku now Han
[1:26:40] knows about this as does Finn as does everybody in the resistance and
[1:26:52] strongest evidence to suggest this line really was put in to bump up the script without realizing the effect it has on latter portions you think it was luck that chewy and I found the Falcon if we can find it on our scanners the first
[1:27:05] order is not far behind and with that I feel it's a good time to reference a little argument that often comes up from interesting corners of the internet but also the very creators behind the content this a movie about space Wizards
[1:27:18] intended for children the problem with that logic is severalfold as we've been over but we have an example here of the writers trying to maintain their written Universe with rules they want the audience to listen as to why it makes
[1:27:31] sense they certainly aren't asking you to ignore it because space Wizards and I appreciate the attempt but my goodness they always end up having their repairs they always end up having their repairs fold back in on themselves now ignoring
[1:27:44] all of those potential elements leading up to the exposure of the resistance this is the actual reason they were found we have their location we attract their reconnaissance ship to the elenium system good mhm it was a simple
[1:28:00] run-of-the-mill Recon ship having been tracked so why is that frustrating well awakens many may have pointed out that discussed this at length and we will continue to break it down in the summary
[1:28:15] I bring it up here because they have all the elements prepared to recreate the Death Star run from episode 4 but we are still missing a key detail if the ships all assault the base and get destroyed then yes it's a failure but nothing
[1:28:30] really happens the resistance can regroup and try again later they may even be able to recruit more men to their cause in the meantime what will raise the tension is to recreate the elements that the rebel base was at risk
[1:28:42] of being destroyed in episode 4 during the Death Star run only during episode 4 the reason the Empire knew the location of the base was by allowing Our Heroes information tempting them to go home to deliver it
[1:28:56] while having a tracker on board since both Vader and Tarkin were convinced that the plans wouldn't amount to the destruction of the Death Star giving them the chance to erase the Rebellion for good that's not only an intelligent
[1:29:10] move from Vader with the information he has but a satisfying trade-off to watch play out for the Empire versus the rebels Our Heroes did succeed but at a rebels Our Heroes did succeed but at a strong cost meanwhile in this story a
[1:29:23] reconnaissance sh unrelated to anything we've seen was tracked in the background during other scenes and so now the first order know about the base look I understand the writers were in a pickle the first order couldn't
[1:29:37] always know the location of the resistance base as they would have to know the location to make it much more dramatic as they come seconds away from destroying their base during the Death Star run so what's the solution uh
[1:29:51] well a random ship got spotted at the the very worst moment making the plot that much more dramatic I guess we just need a throwaway line to sort it out we have their location we tracked their reconnaissance ship to the elenium
[1:30:05] system good and there we have it a contrivance we didn't even need we can now begin the race between the good guys and the bad guys to see who destroys the other first and I'm sure it'll be just as tension filled as the first time and
[1:30:19] as tension filled as the first time and second time they did this the scene then ends with snoke demanding sinisterly that Ray be brought to him implying the potential for a new Apprentice or perhaps torture to gain
[1:30:33] information on her origins or to gauge her in general we end up discovering that his only desire was to pull Luke's location out of her head but Ry didn't have that information in the same vein at this point some argue that he was
[1:30:48] going to get the map out of her head but snoke only showed interest in Ry once kylo described her as being strong with the force and besides it brings up the whole brain information transfer to an archive thing whatever snoke's
[1:31:01] intentions might have been however interesting will never be known this is because it could have given snoke more depth by exploring what he values in what makes him motivated as the head of
[1:31:16] the first order instead of being your generic bad guy who wants everyone dead generic bad guy who wants everyone dead you have the spirit of a TR true Jed and because of that you must die this is however a
[1:31:29] stain for the force awakens as well because this scene doesn't mean anything like so many others now don't only getting worse when factoring in episode 9 and all of this spurred so many questions from the fans ones that were
[1:31:43] never answered and to this day would be difficult to list expediently but let's difficult to list expediently but let's give it a who is snoke who is he to Han Luc and Leia who is he to kylo what binds him to
[1:31:59] the running narrative where did he come from did Palpatine see him as a threat was he afraid of Palpatine is he Darth plagas did he always exist was he around that ruined all of our beloved characters Lives why did the first order
[1:32:13] accept him as ruler why is he so powerful why did well at least we found powerful why did well at least we found out how Snokes are made
[1:32:28] even get to know what snoke did to tear this kid from his family and without those answers the World building and character takes a major hit being the first order and its rise have so many conflicting elements that haven't been
[1:32:40] explained and the same is to be said for the Dynamics between all of the Legacy characters it leads to the idea that some writing Puppet Master is providing power to the faction that currently has less and once you understand that
[1:32:53] there's nothing to stop it from happening again and again that's the state of the world and the character writing respectively is perforated with major gaps as the motivation behind so many major decisions involving the
[1:33:05] people we love in this fiction are left empty with a selection of dialogue to summarize the history and bullet points with the plot being revealed to have purely to try and reform the threat of Palpatine and provide a source of evil
[1:33:20] for Our Heroes to overcome though they clearly didn't realize that most of every character and plot point is connected to snoke it begins with snoke and his rise that is the biggest change that happened between episodes 6 and 7
[1:33:34] makes this world have some semblance of a narrative and we get nothing needless to say we are now in Dire Straits coming back to the room kylo showed off his Ash
[1:33:46] collection however we see Ray uses a Jedi mind trick on a stormtrooper man would have sucked for her if no one was on guard inside the room and she was simply forced to wait in there or Hell imagine there were two guards but let's
[1:33:59] chat about the more dispiriting element at play here Rey knows how to and can perform a mind trick you know this is probably a great moment to separate out the strong difference in the people criticizing the story and the people
[1:34:12] praising it there is a lot to say about the quality of Storytelling in the force awakens as we've been through but this is just a bit more blatant compared to other issues she simply shouldn't have any idea of what she's doing right now
[1:34:26] this betrays what's been set up previously by the world in these films first and foremost it confuses the process of becoming a force user as though anyone can do this at any point in which case we would be dealing with a
[1:34:39] very different World perhaps more importantly however it spits in the face of setup and payoff no viewer satisfaction is possible because we had no idea this was possible such a simple yet blatant hole being blown into to the
[1:34:53] rules of this world will nevertheless raise defenses like these it don't really matter it's a film with space Wizards every Jedi can do it and she's a Jedi it's explained in the visual novels Ray is powerful and untapped she just
[1:35:11] tried something and it worked what's a problem Luke did the same thing he used the force without knowing about it we may as well start with the first argument so do you think fiction simply doesn't have rules what if I write that
[1:35:23] Ray decides all the bad guys should be dead and through the power of the force it works what if I want the sun to be grabbed by hand out of the sky and eaten grabbed by hand out of the sky and eaten by gunun dooming nabo to become a frozen
[1:35:37] Wasteland hey you know what lightsabers can teleport you now heal you play chess with you and watch Netflix with you you know what blasters can destroy
[1:35:52] making this argument online you you have an arbitrary line drawn for where you difference is that I'm trying to draw mine at a principle do not break established rules if you find an example it's a piece of inconsistent writing and
[1:36:06] the next step is assessing the impact comparatively your only qualifier for a rule being broken too much is whether you noticed it the second argument is a joke because Rey hasn't been given any training whatsoever she has no idea what
[1:36:20] a Jedi is let alone a mind trick most of them get some form of a primer or guide to their power but Ry somehow decided only have made sense if she was a part of the audience having seen the prior
[1:36:33] movies the third argument is sad There are people who think Ry escaping the villain's custody with an ability we have no reason to think she would even explained in some book you need to buy additional to the film you know when
[1:36:47] third party information explains what ig88 Captain fasma and D Jango Fett got up to when they weren't involved with the protagonists that's fine in fact it's awesome if those are well-written stories but when the third party
[1:37:01] information is required for the plot to make any sense then your story no longer functions as a story the fourth argument is one of convenience and I think if you're in favor of powerful and Incredibly useful contrivances in
[1:37:14] addition to the ones we've already had acting like a plague on this script then just one more isn't going to affect your viewing experience though without knowing anything about it why would someone just assume they can control
[1:37:27] people's minds seems to me like a stretch and the final argument is referencing episode 5 but it doesn't apply Luke had training the force was explained to him and Luke was in a position of reaching for the lightsaber
[1:37:41] and through his stress made it move with the force telekinesis was also precedented regardless it's a much more intuitive way to access that power within that universe as opposed to too randomly trying out whether you can mind
[1:37:55] control people because why not and it makes a whole lot more sense when you think about what Obi-Wan told Luke let go your conscious self and act on go your conscious self and act on Instinct stretch out with your
[1:38:08] feelings in conclusion this scene humiliates the idea of training Hollows the Journey of a Jedi relies on third-party media and encourages conveniences once again while ignoring the many rules of the originals but what
[1:38:23] if could repair some of this by simply applying a tweak to the dialogue what if kylo Begins the conversation by raising his hand and saying you're going to tell me what you saw on the map she replies no then we wait what what is um is there
[1:38:39] a problem no I just I guess are you doing the voice for Ray yes uh this is happening all right anyway so like I said it starts with kylo saying you're going to tell me what you saw on the map and she replies no then we see him frown
[1:38:53] or reach a level of confusion only to try again you know I can take whatever I want you are going to tell me what you saw on the map and he gets the same result but Ray being so puzzled asks what are you doing and kylo says I'm
[1:39:08] impressed mine tricks Aren't Enough Ray can then respond what are you talking about now kylo as a result of being prompted by this cocky scavenger will doesn't understand in an attempt to intimidate the forces so much more than
[1:39:24] you know more than your band of criminals could ever respect more than Han Solo could prepare you for any fool is capable of a mind trick but this this [Music] hurt and so kylo begins to torture her
[1:39:40] and she backs him off in the same way she did originally of course I would likely rewrite her source of power or uh I would rewrite everything about these Cosmic defecations but my point should be clear the the scene however poorly
[1:39:54] voice acted is now only slightly tweaked and we have a reason for her to be able to do this kylo has inadvertently just taught Rey how to try and utilize a mind trick while letting her know more about the force in an attempt to describe just
[1:40:08] how Beyond her reach it is and I would likely extend the scene to be an interrogation on kylo's part that opens with the Declaration that Ray will be executed that should make kylo's Exposition feel even more Justified as
[1:40:21] the words fall on dead is regardless Ry then she frees herself from the prison and they throw in a joke for good measure AR you drop your weapon and I'll drop my
[1:40:35] weapon and I think that works pretty well it's as though it plays on the mindset of youer has when seeing mind control take place how long does it last can you keep asking for more stuff well yes apparently it is light-hearted and
[1:40:49] fun but it does rely on Rey having power that she has no capacity for I guess you quintessential non-argument that essentially stands in for this film is poorly written please don't think about it which is an interesting Prospect you
[1:41:05] should not be hurrying to admit that a film is great when you turn your brain off depending on your criteria it's paradoxical your brain being active is what supplies those very emotions personally when consuming media I don't
[1:41:19] really feel anything unless my brain is on and actively taking in events this applies to films like The Prestige and the room I need my brain running to enjoy them both hi doggy you're my favorite customer understanding how
[1:41:33] events connect or disconnect is often where the entertainment comes from but turn the all computer off if it helps I suppose moving on kylo has a scene in which he realizes Ry has escaped and he flips out slashing the chair she was
[1:41:47] into pieces with his lightsaber unlike it previously being played for Dramatics the film takes us out outside the room and we see two Stormtroopers who become very nervous about getting anywhere near him they end up walking back the way
[1:42:00] they came and I know firsthand this made the audience howl with laughter Troopers know him and they know not to get in his way when he's having a tantrum and so they run off which is supportive of his lack of control but simultaneously adds
[1:42:13] to the bratty nature of his character kylo alongside his personal moments and his lightsaber being akin to an exposed nerve is a clear idea in this Trilogy and there were many incredible directions he could have been taken this
[1:42:27] moment also highlights the humanity of the Stormtroopers once again something of a frustrating schizophrenia the script is dealing with they are people and we need to recognize that in order to save them from this horrible fate no
[1:42:41] they're not yes they are no they are not yes they are no they are not yes they are anyway under hux's command the Star are anyway under hux's command the Star Killer base's main Cannon ch es
[1:42:59] up this involves sucking a sun into their station uh this is utterly insane now I'm no spaceist so I can't disprove any of this with a textbook but it is a
[1:43:12] perspective calm down calm down let me explain anime in my experience often indulges in the serial escalation Trope if you don't know the name it essentially means that there's always a bigger fish or laser Heroes destroy the
[1:43:28] villains with something big but then the villain comes back with something bigger and vice versa until the finale where definitive things occur instead of fights that are actually just delaying a finale this new Death Star reeks of that
[1:43:43] idea and so does the entire sequel Trilogy episode four saw the destruction of the Death Star and by the time episode 6 rolled around they built the same device though not to completion and it was destroyed now we have the super
[1:43:57] death star known as Star Killer base which is almost a cruel joke parading the corpse of the now decanonized Star Killer storyline from the Force Unleashed while trying to bank on the nostalgic notion of Luke Skywalker
[1:44:10] originally being named Luke Star Killer we couldn't just have a first order Death Star could we the resistance end up displaying it rather casually implying they are concerned with it but it's essentially par of the course how
[1:44:22] was this cre in secret yet you have the schematics already also this how do we blow it up there's always a way to do that just a meta line to highlight how much of a cartoon these films have become Once Upon a Time the Death Star
[1:44:35] become Once Upon a Time the Death Star was actually horrifying presence with the Death Star in the original trilogy but with the
[1:44:47] portrayal in the new films it is impossible to take any of it seriously we all know how this ends even the film is bored of the idea and to clarify the original death star was so intimidating that they were able to create a teaser
[1:45:00] trailer for rogue one using just the right music and a shot like right music and a shot like [Music] this as if you could ever pull off that kind of Gravitas from this embarrassing
[1:45:14] botched clone and that's before your brains jump onto the mechanical side of things like wouldn't removing a sun from a solar system cause major ecological and gravitational issues for everything in the area does the station move to
[1:45:28] different solar systems every time it needs a new sun to eat also I guess we need to assume this laser is traveling with hyperdrive or something but look at how slow it is here how in the world is this going to reach any Target before it
[1:45:42] ends up dying naturally also also the sun isn't empty calories that power up a battery it's Mass you're telling me it's now inside a plane sized ball and you no that's the thing it just had to be way bigger right not to be mistaken with a
[1:45:57] moon anymore no now it's like it's like a planet now a planet that is powered by a big Co no no it's it's powered by the sun no this thing eats Suns yeah how cool is that Vengeance Maria apocalypse
[1:46:12] cool is that Vengeance Maria apocalypse that blue Hedgehog presentation and there were grown men crying in the theater
[1:46:31] oh it drains the very life blood out of suns at a whim as would a god it then fires a beam no no no three five beams at once that spew across the Galaxy I at once that spew across the Galaxy I call it death no no no Star Killer base
[1:46:46] original character do not steal it's really sad that in desperation of dazzling the audience we drain any sense of dread from this daunting idea I can't deny they made the right choice monetarily at least at first but even
[1:47:01] that excuse is running dry for these awful stories now anyway the planet prepares to destroy the resistance base and we cut right to them PO says the information they received from the Recon ship confirms what Finn has in his
[1:47:15] report this line is here to give us a reason for the Recon ship to have cost acknowledges that Finn had the information anyway making the ship redundant Finn then describes how the base operates it uses the power of the
[1:47:30] Sun as the weapon is charged the sun is drained until it disappears Leia then receives a message saying the resistance have now been targeted and the base is charging wait so that means the Recon ship wasn't destroyed it was just
[1:47:43] followed back you literally stole the Beat from A New Hope without any of the even need to and you didn't use a Tracker you just followed lucky they didn't hyperdrive when traveling between systems I guess because as we know that
[1:47:58] Tech requires a star destroyer at least at which point I ask why not send your at which point I ask why not send your vast Armada now you can stop any assault they're planning and you can take their bait whatever of course this isn't great
[1:48:11] news but we have the benefit of seeing the Last Jedi now and therefore we know all of them can board the Rus and Escape at the very least they have the at the very least they have the transports no harm done my with the
[1:48:23] Republic Fleet we're doomed okay so we have a lot to unpack here thanks to that one line I'm not kidding that line screws up so much of what we know the fleet that belonged to the resistance and the Republic has been obliterated
[1:48:36] along with the five planets we saw previously they only have a selection of Fighters remaining and are thus grounded this means they are sitting ducks when considering the incoming laser from Star Killa base that is how the tension is
[1:48:50] built in a lot of Stories We are told that all of these people are going to die if they don't stop star Killa base now we just went over how much this doesn't make sense when considering the Last Jedi but we also know the
[1:49:03] resistance has time to escape the base won't fire at them for another 20 minutes of movie time so who knows how much longer they have in real time when the rebels were attacked on hath with the Empire at the gates they still
[1:49:15] managed to get a significant Force out in time why would they not have the means to escape their base when they had the support of the galactic government should they not be far better off than Hoth the simple explanation here is both
[1:49:28] incompetence and that the writers are now clearly fighting each other retroactively again oh and by the way I might have a couple of Boulders floating to show your your Force m& so I was led to believe that I still had the
[1:49:42] that's funny too because that would have changed the whole story if they of course in fact when I read eight before seven came out I said what and I called I did I call JJ ran somebody said just say are you guys aware of this have you
[1:49:56] seen a cut is there floating Boulders and they said no no we caught that we worked it all out but that's the difference here in the old days there was an overall outline this one's more like a relay race where the first guy
[1:50:08] runs the race and hands the torch off and then you know the same with Ryan whoever or JJ now is not going to take Ryan story and figure it all out yeah JJ Abrams was going to have Luke at the end of episode seven floating Boulders this
[1:50:25] means he had no intention of creating the force absent Luke of course that changed dramatically when Ryan stepped in because there's no agreement on what should be happening in these scripts it's at the whim of the next person in
[1:50:38] the production line a practice that's spreading many viewers might notice little in terms of continuity errors for these movies when viewed 2 years apart but that experience isn't quite the same when viewing them years later all
[1:50:51] together as one might for the sake of rewatching Classics or for the sake of an autopsy JJ wanted the resistance to essentially be resourceless by the end of the force awakens in order to have the horrifying first order close to
[1:51:06] crushing them but shockingly our Plucky Heroes save the day by the closest margin just like the original but then Ryan wanted to go from there and create his space Chase movie chalk full of ships so he dropped the radus as well as
[1:51:21] an armada right there in the opening if anyone wanted to argue that it arrived at the beginning of the Last Jedi explaining that it simply wasn't around for the force awakens would you care to explain why everyone in the resistance
[1:51:33] seems to have no idea it exists as an option and while you're at it perhaps you can explain why the radus wasn't able to jump to this planet now when the resistance is threatened with Extinction if these stories were being created back
[1:51:46] example this would be a conflict in The Writing Room directly by setting up the last Jed space Chase plot Ryan has not only generated new rules that damage the entire Saga in a broad sense he has tampered with the tension of the climax
[1:52:01] in the prior film something that could have been argued out in real time in reality by being such broken up projects with no guiding hand the writers are able to ignore each other's work to benefit their own stories JJ ignored
[1:52:15] plenty of georgees and in turn Ryan has ignored plenty of JJ and George's only for Ryan to then have his work ignored by JJ it's like poetry anyway Han Solo suggests they simply blow the station up and Finn points out there's an
[1:52:30] oscillator in the 47th Precinct that prevents destabilization if they can destroy that the whole planet will go up with absorbing the Sun but they can't get to it with ships because there's a planet-wide shield Finn says he can
[1:52:43] disable the shields as he's worked there Han offers to get him there with Chewy and the scene is over in a decidedly smaller amount of time we have man manag to begin the third act for episode 4 again and with just enough rudimentary
[1:52:57] explanation we now get to have some action scenes along with it we then see po and crew setting up their x-wings for battle and Finn gives a goodbye to PO each other and that they had a lot of good moments this is performed like a
[1:53:11] goodbye for his character which is suitable considering this is the last time these two will share a scene but then you realize just how many resources have been squandered and what these two could be discussing the sheer amount of
[1:53:24] unresolved unspoken drama and history bleeding from these scenes is palpable Leia tells Han to bring Ben home we then see kylo is told that Ry is still missing on the base and he's worried that the longer they take to find her
[1:53:39] the more powerful she will become which let's be honest kylo is absolutely right here Ray's teacher in the trilogy is time itself the more she has the more powerful she gets the more abilities she learns and the more deadly she becomes
[1:53:55] give her an afternoon and she'll overpower the emperor well that wouldn't make any sense he's dead so Ry manages to successfully sneak around the base which I would imagine is supposed to be justified in that she knows star destroy
[1:54:08] as well but the architecture and Technology present in broken Empire Era enough to enable sneaking around an active staffed first order era Star Destroyer unless she was that lucky regardless we then have a scene that
[1:54:23] frustrates the living hell out of people Han uses the light speed as part of the hyperdrive to bypass the shields because the shields have a fractional refresh rate meaning they are essentially flickering at the Nan if you're fast
[1:54:37] enough you won't be hit when going through their Shields have a fractional slower than light speed from getting through we're making our landing approach at light speed first of all if it's an extremely tight piloting move
[1:54:50] then this is an easy excuse to bring in po as part of your ground team whoever shoots the thing when the chance comes up can still be done by any of these Lads and he then gets to have more time with the T whatever second bad move
[1:55:03] Disney don't add rules to the hyperdrive it complicates everything in a big old ripple effect throughout the movies now I'm not as much of a law nerd in relation to Star Wars as I may come across there is plenty in the extended
[1:55:16] Universe I haven't seen or read though I generally have a strong investment in the films so let's not go nuts with the mechanical side of the science fiction with this maneuver I am a simple man for the most part all I want is for the most
[1:55:30] fantasy of fantasy and the most sci-fi of sci-fi to Simply operate as I've been told it does rather than doing a big old contradiction take the force for example it is some kind of thing that exists it's like the natural order or the
[1:55:45] influence the universe has on itself it's a part of everyone everyone can feel it and use it some having a stronger eltion towards it once you harness it you gain abilities some of which can be helpful and some that can
[1:55:58] hurt then there's the morally gray stuff the rules are that you need training to with a base level of what I assume is force proficiency the better you are at likely become then there's a bunch of force abilities right you know stuff
[1:56:15] they show us in the films that we then expect to be utilized the less new powers the better because they can otherwise act as deox marer though there are ways to introduce them so the force is explained but it's not really
[1:56:27] explained I don't know how the force works exactly or how it functions on a fundamental level but it is an entity of sorts and it has rules to follow limits to abide by we see training then use we
[1:56:40] don't see people just suddenly mastering it with no n right also we typically don't like to see brand new stuff pulled out of no way to save people but even serious ripple effect why why didn't Palpatine just fly himself back up the
[1:56:53] shaft I guess Leia and Ray were both stronger in the force than all Palpatine uh never mind when it comes to hyperdrive the impression I got from the films that we have seen to this point is that it's fast travel we need people to
[1:57:07] get to places fast because space is Big then we got told it isn't easy and that you have to have a computer nail the coordinates or you can end up going into a planet and essentially kill yourself from that point it's used as an escape
[1:57:19] method or simply travel it's moving really fast fast or moving into a slipstream sort of thing it isn't weaponized nor is there any insane maneuver to perform with it but then they did this and now there's a rather
[1:57:32] answered even from a Layman's perspective but before we shoot off into the hyperdrive it's incredibly lucky this Shield isn't constant and the fact that it refreshes implies it could have been a tactic for some time in this
[1:57:45] universe only Han seems to be doing this for the first time ever so fine okay the idea is that Han is traveling at light speed and he is going to manually pull the break as soon as he passes the shield on the planet but not before
[1:58:01] getting to the planet now that sweet spot is absolutely astronomical by comparison to the ground he is covering via light speed and yet he Nails it they throw in a mountain side for him to avoid making it feel dramatic but how in
[1:58:16] the world did he manage this this is probably the most impressive reaction time we have ever seen seen in Star Wars as said by the film he's heading right for the planet and breaks manually in the tiniest of fractions traveling at
[1:58:30] light speed obviously the risk completely outweighs the reward since they aren't even sure of what they can do once they get to the planet and yet Han decides this is the best way to do it do any of you remember what he used
[1:58:46] calculations we' fly right through a star or too close to a supernova and then it end youred real quick wouldn't he you see not only is this move absurd but Han is not the person to have done this he's the guy who would have said
[1:58:59] it's nonsense and suicide you can't be Reckless with hyperdrive or it gets you killed and yet he fires himself right into a planet and pulls out in the last nanc we're making our landing approach at light speed
[1:59:18] and it's also amazing to think about in terms of this fresh rate when cutting it down to time that it's on versus off the gaps will be flickering so quickly that there's no reason not to assume you will absolutely cut the Falcon in half this
[1:59:32] whole scenario is extremely hard to take seriously because aside from the precise timing the fractional gaps in the Shields and the dramatic swerve to safety the Falcon survives being plowed through a forest of trees without being
[1:59:46] detected by a single Sentry camera or sensor and on top of that does does anyone remember this line sir we're detecting a massive object emerging from hyperspace how do you not have anything in the space surrounding your plane
[2:00:01] sized HQ that's able to see this no foreign object detection on the planet or surrounding it at all despite Han saying that the first order have the Falcon's frequency ready for scanners to detect as you can probably tell we are
[2:00:15] reaching critical in terms of continuity and this story is on life support and you know what if you can do this and people just know about it why didn't they do it against the second death star in episode 6 they were all trapped being
[2:00:30] blown up one by one and none of them thought hey let's just go for a gamble run into the Death Star if we make it past the shield we can destroy it nah let's just hope the shields go down eventually and we can die instead but if
[2:00:43] Jedi Han could have underestimated the hyperdrive and shot through the star Killa base destroying it anyway so perhaps he was all along the rules on hyperdrive have been utterly melted by Disney it is now a power to be used
[2:00:58] whenever they have written themselves into a tough situation they break their own rules and the rules set long ago because storytelling is just cool event after cool event nobody needs consistency it absolutely won't help
[2:01:11] bring down the most Sure Fire money printing franchise ever no sir not only do these new rules cause problems for the past film's integrity but it will provide innumerable issues for the future planetary Shields can be bypassed
[2:01:27] by hyperdrive and Star Destroyers can't even match a singular Droid controlled X-Wing it is hard to make new things with existing rules but it's not impossible it requires creativity as long as you have the time you should
[2:01:42] write a few drafts and really get your ideas tempered by trusted friends and creatives out there not to mention getting refreshes on the content you are using as a Foundation the fact is that the hyperdrive seemed pretty insane from
[2:01:55] the get-go and keeping it simple as a form of fast travel manages to maintain the Star Wars universe as a massive number of systems that could be traveled between with haste with Escape scenes generating plenty of tension and payoff
[2:02:09] now considering the two newest additions to the mainline episodes and how they traveled through a creature including partway of a hanger here we are dealing with a huge number of conflicting new rules that will put almost every story
[2:02:23] involving hyperdrive in Jeopardy and so why would an audience member be invested when we have to accept that there is no structure and anything is possible there structure and anything is possible there cannot be stakes and so by solving yet
[2:02:36] another problem in their script they have crippled many portions of what came before and what's on the way so the Troopers are still looking for Ry and kylo can feel the arrival of Han Solo I figured it was force users who could
[2:02:49] detect other Force users but I suppe it's about who is Meaningful to you we then find out that Finn has only worked sanitation in his time on Star Killer base this is of course extremely shocking to Han because it means Finn
[2:03:04] knowledge that will help them lower the shields you would think that someone might have asked what his job was prior to engaging this Mission someone may have asked for details but more importantly you would have thought that
[2:03:17] someone would have asked how the shields are turned off why must you make the charm Rogue an elderly [ __ ] the confirmation of Finn's history as a janitor means only one thing Finn was in the team that assaulted The Village to
[2:03:30] view the horrors of war changing his life and putting him on the path to becoming a hero of the resistance and he was working on kylo's Star Destroyer that allowed him access to a captured Poe on top of that Finn happened to work
[2:03:44] on the supremacy enabling his knowledge of its tracking systems for the future well his intermittent knowledge also he is is a literal space janitor for some distant weaponized Planet why all of this well because every writer had a
[2:04:00] different job for Finn to fill none of them actually cared about his character or his journey as we and John boaga are more than well aware of the sad fact is that this writing spaghetti may have solely been in favor of creating a joke
[2:04:16] to make Finn useless in this environment would mean Han asks Finn what the plan is and Finn says we'll figure it out we'll use the force that's not how the force works and I think the joke works well here it's a funny thing to hear Han
[2:04:31] say since he obviously came around in terms of his perspective on the force and he's the one telling someone how it works though it's lame that the joke had to come from a place that adds more layers of inconsistency to Finn's
[2:04:43] meta joke against the writers of the Disney Star Wars films
[2:04:57] [Music] open that's not how the force
[2:05:09] works that's not how the force works that's our Drop Zone how do you know a feeling that's not how the force works the need in front of your nose works the need in front of your nose that's not how the force works
[2:05:31] is a strong representation of just how much Finn has come to care about Ry he has committed to this mission for her with no plan at all hux then asks when the weapon will be charged and we discover the heroes have only 10 minutes
[2:05:44] discover the heroes have only 10 minutes remaining apparently it was that easy to find and access while having no alerts or defense Beyond some guy in a hallway no hacking no explosives just full access Finn then
[2:06:01] says he knows how to disable the Shields and what he's referring to is the capture of Captain fasma so naturally we happens to be right where they are on the planet I guess that despite there
[2:06:14] being at least 47 precincts they not only landed at the one they needed but fasma also happened to be in it too and close enough that they could capture her without incident that is pretty darn convenient so chewy rugby tackles her
[2:06:30] convenient so chewy rugby tackles her and she yells rather behind her have no idea and they don't raise a single alert fasma is then held
[2:06:42] at gunpoint by both Han and chewy obviously because their blasters would hurt her which um I just Let's ignore that Finn at the prospect of capturing fasma is unable to contain his excitement I'm in charge I'm
[2:06:57] in charge now fasma I'm in charge bring it down bring it down follow me these jokes are going to work for you or they won't for me I guess I appreciate the mentally and physically by his upbringing in the first order and this
[2:07:12] woman is that oppression personified he's acting like a professional clown it's hard for me to separate that as a whole Reay is then seen still escaping and narrowly avoiding enemy Troopers she ends up in some kind of holding or
[2:07:27] storage device that takes her through to another end of the hanger and again you can connect her knowledge of that with her spelunking in Old Empire technology though it's still a small stretch being that this is active you'd think there
[2:07:39] may be senses security or even operations that she is just unaware of anyway Han and Finn need to lower the Shields and thus they take the captured Captain to some control panel that allows her to do just that no individual
[2:07:53] Witnesses or confirmation is required the entire planet shielding is now down on top of that it's not something hux can fix or prevent from the control center of the entire base that's one of them enormous multifaceted holes in the
[2:08:08] script that allows everything to happen Captain fasma has a high enough rank to do this in the first place apparently no alert is raised no silent alarms no confirmation they don't even take her helmet off to despite it being
[2:08:22] protective gear and it is what she would obviously use to communicate with other Troopers more importantly though fasma doesn't try anything beyond actually deactivating the Shields and the dialogue woefully reinforces why need to
[2:08:37] blast that bucket off your head lower the shields you're making a big mistake do it conflicting rules are almost a part of the cannon now though my point in actuality was that that line was another example of ADR me to blast that
[2:08:52] bucket off your head lower the shields you're making a big mistake do it again I have no problem with ADR but the quality of the audio is slightly different to when Finn speaks in the actual scene and they make sure not to
[2:09:05] show Finn's face as he says the line this means they very likely added the line in to tell the audience once again fasma is doing this because she's having her life threatened by a blaster they made a conscious effort to say her armor
[2:09:19] is useless and well someone else didn't really care regardless fasma lowers the shields with no fuss whatsoever and then she is made a joke they toss her down
[2:09:31] the trash compactor and as a consequence we are forced to judge her or interact we are forced to judge her or interact with her uh form a relationship on her character and and due to her actions it seemed to me fasma shouldn't be lowering
[2:09:45] the shields at all she should be dying before even considering doing that as a stalwart member of the first order it seems a lot of them are ride or die but apparently this is her character she is cowardly there is no support of this in
[2:09:59] her demeanor or her dialogue and they sell her as threatening in the promotional material despite her plating to opposition at a moment's notice they attempted to double down on this in the Last Jedi but that of course didn't make
[2:10:11] it into the Final Cut you shut down Star Killer Shields who would believe a story Killer Shields who would believe a story like that
[2:10:24] began All Chrome one of the coolest looking characters how would you looking characters how would you describe her in one word badass oh I like it well you're good at that you're good at that the fact is that the oot
[2:10:37] and the prequels had villainous characters with limited writing but they were intimidating because of their efficiency in countering the heroes they were remembered Darth Maul killed Qui-Gon Jin Boba Fett captured Han Solo
[2:10:52] trilogy like a ban yes you cannot perform a plot summary without going over these events because they have drastic effects on the world and the characters fasma is remembered as an overgrown toy a botched
[2:11:08] clone of past undeveloped villains that filled the same slot as if Disney Star Wars wants to now create something underdeveloped with a cult following in the fan base by Design something that could generate extra story and
[2:11:21] merchandise oh my God it's Captain Faz fantasm Captain f f Man Captain Captain advertisement but yes fasma is unable to do anything and is forced down the
[2:11:34] garbage shoot you would think she'd have some kind of comm's device but NOP she's some kind of comm's device but NOP she's out first JJ Abrams said you killed this out first JJ Abrams said you killed this role you killed the audition you killed
[2:11:47] the audition is that true what a shame that that is for so much potential Captain fantasma although her role in the film is pushed to the side she's not in this film very much uh but when her design
[2:12:01] looks amazing and I'm sure she's going to factor in uh to episode 8 and nine everyone made a big deal about Captain razmataz but Captain razmataz didn't do maybe the new stuff that should have gotten more attention in this film will
[2:12:15] built up fasma they're like oh my God we got Bri of Tarth and she did nothing and the shields like nothing and I'm I guess we'll learn more about her how about Captain fa fasma I like the idea of of fasma I want to know more of her back
[2:12:29] story I want to know is she actually a badass or is she just a normal uh lieutenant or or uh leader of her uh Battalion um small ass part she was used mainly for a joke uh she's going to be a
[2:12:43] more in eight and N also there is a silver girl Nazi she is important remember that she is important buy a toy to remind you that she is important script are you like yes finally my Redemption cuz I know you get a big
[2:12:58] fight scene with uh with Finn right um this is when I get to give the answer that my friends here have heard 13,000 times already today oh no there goes times already today oh no there goes Captain FMA oh no oh no gendlin just how
[2:13:12] did the first ord's best leader get tossed in a trash compactor by Finn well I you know sometimes life gets tough moves in unexpected ways and do you know what sometimes you just feel like giving up
[2:13:33] [Laughter] life so the shields are down Planet wide and Han has been detected by kylo and there's still no alert out yet nor did attention to the instruments regarding the planet shielding or Weaponry systems
[2:13:49] this script has so little time time to develop and explain that everything is falling apart they are clearly opting in favor of reaching a series of emotional payoffs that have been waiting in the wings for some time and as a result we
[2:14:02] have entered a sort of fifth stage classification of script leprosy Leia then gives the order for 12 x-wings to begin their attack on the Star Killer base oh uh a couple of things here why are the forces of the resistance so
[2:14:17] humiliatingly small we saw the Republic got destroyed yes but there has been no damage or reduction of the forces outside of these planets and the idea that they were all there is absurd for a Galaxy wide government and aside from a
[2:14:30] small Skirmish on takodana there has been no damage to the resistance base or narrative whatsoever which is interesting alongside the fact that they are a faction designed to combat growing empir related threats why wouldn't they
[2:14:45] have an entire Armada or at least different ships alongside these x-wings why do the resistance have no bombers whatsoever x-wings have proton torpedoes but wouldn't you send bomber class ships to a bombing run of a whole planet why
[2:15:00] is there no capital ship for support and rescue none of this works in any way imaginable from both factions why isn't kylo's Star Destroyer floating above while he's on this station where in the world are the orbital defenses for this
[2:15:13] planet does the first order not care about the most valuable Planet station ever made doubling up as the most devastating weapon in the history of the entire galaxy being defended there are no Star Destroyers no Fighters not even
[2:15:27] Scouts and their senses are embarrassing the only way to understand all of this recreate the Death Star run from the original film and they will do anything to get it the last Jedi left no time for additional resources or Personnel to be
[2:15:42] contacted or added because it takes place directly after the force awakens this is understood when combining the continuity of Ray meeting Luke and then speaking to kylo while he is involved in the space chase that leaves very little
[2:15:55] time for anything else to happen which to be fair is something Ryan didn't screw up the Armada of the first order should arrive immediately after their super weapon has been compromised because that doesn't change the fact
[2:16:08] that they have the location of the base but this Fleet is still the response we see this is a problem because we are shown a whole Squadron of awings the infamous bombers and the largest mon calamari ship in the history of Star
[2:16:23] Wars all of these things would have been massively useful for the destruction of Star Killer base and absolutely should have been sent but they simply didn't exist at this point in the writing room and so now when taken as a complete
[2:16:36] Trilogy it becomes a very large plot hole that actively ruins the tension of the force awakens final Act though it isn't the only botched thread for this series of unfortunate events I do want to say however it is ill fated that the
[2:16:51] force awakens doesn't hold up to scrutiny alone but now it is also forced to defend itself against its own sequel which in turn will have to defend itself against its own sequel what a complete disaster anyway moving on the x-wings
[2:17:06] assault the planet and hux orders the dispatch of all squadrons which just highlights how many they have at their fingertips that are mysteriously missing when it comes to other areas of the narrative hux also fails to request that
[2:17:18] someone put the shields back up I find it fascinating that you can hear someone in the background say Shields up Shields up just take a listen for yourselves 46 45 Shield up Shield up so once again how didn't they get any kind of instrumental
[2:17:34] alert or notification that the shields for the entire planet had been removed and why can't they be reestablished from this control center hux is sitting in headquarters of the entire station and he has the highest rank on the entire
[2:17:48] he has the highest rank on the entire planet the first order are Beyond inept so the resistants complete a few runs and deal no damage revealing that it is not as simple as they once thought if only they had some bombers they then
[2:18:01] reaffirm that the sun going down is the signal for time running out we're going to come back to that as the large Squadron of Tie fighters enters the scene the dog fighting begins meanwhile Finn chewy and Han decide to assault
[2:18:14] some kind of control room to try and find Ry as they did in the original only they don't need to they realize she has saved herself already incredible there was another joke here where Han is trying to nod towards Ry
[2:18:29] and Finn says why you doing that H why you doing this I'm trying to come up with a plan again it'll go both ways for many viewers some people find it endearing some people find it obnoxious I find
[2:18:43] that these jokes are being scattered here in prep for Han's death it gives strong reason for both Finn and Ray to feel soose close to him or at least to their Journey with him it can be
[2:18:56] audience in a sense of comfort before slipping a knife in the heart regardless they want to make sure you like Han Solo on top of appreciating Finn chewy and Ray care about him they are primed for a big old scene of loss it's all done
[2:19:11] through levity and learning though only one of those characters has earned that connection so yeah they happen to bump into Ray she broke out of her cell and traveled across different areas of this planet base with at least 47 precincts
[2:19:25] while finen Han knocked down the Shields and pursued a nearby control center to try and find out where she is and they happened to bump right into each other brilliant writing once again for this scene also bit weird she kind of looks
[2:19:39] like she's insulted when they ask if she's okay you all right yeah I assume it's nerves and not the personality sifting below Ray then finds out that Finn was the the one who pushed for her rescue and they share a hug this is
[2:19:54] rescue and they share a hug this is rather on point for developing their relationship thank you Ry knew that Finn's only goal was to escape and so having him come all this way putting himself through serious
[2:20:09] danger implies he cares for her deeply and she recognizes that I look forward to their onscreen friendship developing Han and the crew then realize that the bombs they decided to bring with them may be the only chance left to stop the
[2:20:24] station from firing this dire situation is then reaffirmed by a resistance member who says they've lost half the fleet which let's be honest wasn't much of a fleet considering their massive resources C3PO then confirms the time
[2:20:37] limit is getting shorter cranking the tension once again as I said I have no idea why they aren't evacuating the base we've seen their transports and do they not have more allies no friends at all in this galactic itic Republic well we
[2:20:52] know they do they're involved in both payoffs of both finales of both sequels it's pretty hard to believe that the reach of the Republic stopped with these five planets anyway so Han and shuy shoot down some Troopers only for them
[2:21:06] to reach a locked Pathway to open this pathway Ray and Finn need to go and remove some random piece of metal from a place that's much further away the reason that weird bit of door unlocking happens is so that we can separate the
[2:21:19] ground Heroes into two parties it comes out of nowhere and it's done almost automatically by the characters without a single line of dialogue they do not want you thinking about this so let's think about it this is about to set up
[2:21:33] all the pieces on the board for the big moment Finn just went with Ry to do sense for him to assist the other two men in setting the explosives around the precinct the alternative is watching Ry pull on a piece of metal but yes
[2:21:48] accessing the mechanical security of this door just had to be very far away from that door now it was obviously done to separate the characters but as a result they have provided Ry with yet another Talent Ry is a scavenger of
[2:22:03] downed Empire ships that does not mean she should know everything about every Empire ship and station but certainly not the first order era ones and yet she always knows personally I would have had Finn do this in the story to match his
[2:22:18] knowledge of the base while justifying his split from the sabur side of the group he can then suggest that Ray come with him to help cover him or help with Droid translations if need be a simple tweak to a still absolutely ridiculous
[2:22:32] and arbitrary bit of writing I mean he was working sanitation on the base itself he would have to know about the method of access to many areas and getting past security would have been the norm but we know what's being set up
[2:22:45] and when it comes to JJ he will do anything to get what he wants though the fin act in particular clashes so many events together it shell shocks the viewer with events and discourages questions lucky for us I can slow the
[2:23:00] film right down and explore the entirety of what was done to create the scene but that won't be until next time in 2073 or maybe a bit before then yes folks it's true we have reached the end of this part as you're well aware these
[2:23:16] bastards take a huge amount of time to make and they are created solely by myself in between other projects I know many of you have lost faith as to its completion but all I can say is that I will not allow it to go unfinished I
[2:23:29] just need time especially considering we have so much to talk about in part five namely the complete and utter assassination of Han Solo in the force awakens yeah it'll be time to talk all about that not to mention this moment
[2:23:46] which I next time baby we've managed to get through a lot lot of topics this time around and there are plenty left but we're further than halfway now so there's that and I appreciate you sticking around folks thank you so much
[2:24:00] for encouraging this work to take place and for supporting it so thoroughly if you want to see more breakdowns from myself I have a second Channel where a load of coverage on all kinds of media is uploaded it is just a heap of like
[2:24:13] rubble and the unmoving like bodies of the two of them it's really really unpleasant and she's trapped under this with a broken arm from the looks of things and the fire is rising as well yeah there's a lot of very human
[2:24:27] reactions in the show that I kind of appreciate of you're a person a child no less who is who's just like had the entire world explode around you you're trapped under a door your arms broken you can't move or get free two of your
[2:24:42] brothers essentially have just died so yeah you're just lying there sobbing there's not much else there's not much else for for it else there's not much else for for it tragic as hell it gets worse it gets
[2:24:56] worse my friends and I on EAP recently completed our reactions and coverage of completed our reactions and coverage of the book of Boba Fett oh who the book of Boba Fett oh who what um why that's a w mate you're not

[2:26:25] my God I'll take my knife I'll take the thr at him I got a gun finally nope blol it's a knife it's a knife a show that really tried to be as disappointing as possible I can't believe the damage to Luke's character continues and he's
[2:26:38] not even here keep it just keeps happening they're so desperate to have Luke Skywalker and everything they tell us about him is damaging to his character however you will be giving into attachment to those that you love
[2:26:50] and forsaking the way of the Jedi it's worse and worse if you want to check that out as well as more from the EAP crew please click the link below to support my channel and the production of these videos directly consider using the

[2:27:17] much for watching and I'll see you next time Marsha Lucas she was full of beans she was really smart and really bright
[2:27:31] really wonderful woman and I liked her husband Frank I liked him a lot I really did now that she's running Lucas film and making movies it seems to me that Kathy Kennedy and JJ Abrams don't have a clue about Star Wars they don't get it
[2:27:48] and JJ Abrams is writing these stories when I saw that movie where they kill when I saw that movie where they kill Han Solo I was Furious I was Furious when they killed Han Solo absolutely positively there was no Rhyme or Reason
[2:28:01] positively there was no Rhyme or Reason to it I thought you don't get the Jedi story you don't get the magic of Star Wars you're getting rid of hanel and then at the end of this last one the Last Jedi they have Luke
[2:28:15] disintegrate they killed Han Solo they killed Luke Skywalker and they don't don't have Princess Leia anymore and they're spitting out movies every year and they think it's important to appeal to a woman's audience so now their main
[2:28:29] character is this female who's supposed to have Jedi Powers but we don't know to have Jedi Powers but we don't know how she got Jedi powers or who she is it sucks the storylines are terrible just terrible awful you can quote me JJ
