IGN's Jeffrey Vega sits down with Chris Barnardo, co-founder of The Wand Company, to unveil the new Fallout Overseer Edition Pip-Boy. This premium replica features a golden design, a new stand, and a build-it-yourself mind control device kit, all designed to offer an authentic, in-universe experience for collectors.
The Overseer Edition Pip-Boy is new, golden, and appears in most episodes of Fallout Season 2, worn by Hank.
The edition includes a new stand and a mind control device kit that you have to build yourself.
The mind control device is a kit with 40 separate components, including diodes and capacitors, that you assemble.
The device is for display only; it doesn't actually control people. It's made from the CAD files of the show's prop, making it an identical replica.
The design philosophy is to create premium, curated collectibles rather than requiring fans to buy hundreds of items.
The packaging and manual are designed to feel 'in-universe,' with grunge and future elements, making the product feel like a dip into the Fallout universe.
The Overseer Pip-Boy has different screens, including one that shows you sending out vault assignments, giving you 'admin access'.
The screen animations are accurate, sourced from Kilter Films, the studio behind the show.
The previous Pip-Boy kit was so good it was added as a quest in Fallout 76, showing the potential for this product to appear in the show.
Building the device yourself creates a sense of engagement and achievement, and the hidden components act like a 'secret handshake' among fans.
The Overseer Edition Pip-Boy is a premium, build-it-yourself collectible that aims to deepen fan engagement with the Fallout universe through authentic design and a hands-on experience.
Mind control device is a build-it-yourself kit
This is a unique selling point that differentiates the product from typical pre-built replicas.
01:06Replica made from actual show CAD files
This ensures the replica is an identical match to the prop used in the series, adding authenticity.
02:01Premium collectible strategy
The focus on a few curated pieces rather than a large set is a deliberate design philosophy.

This level of detail ensures the screens are accurate to what viewers see on screen.
04:57Building creates engagement
The idea that assembling the product yourself increases emotional connection is a core design principle.
07:35[00:00] Welcome back, Fallout fans. I'm Jeffrey Vega with IGN, and today we're going to be looking at the brand new Fallout Overseer Edition Pit Boy replica.
[00:14] I'm here with the co-founder of the wand company, Chris Barnardo. Last time you were here, you showed us the Pit Boy from Fallout 3 in New Vegas. But what you have today is something completely new. Chris, tell us everything.
[00:26] Well, this is the Overseer Pit Boy. and in season two we see a lot of the overseas Pip-Boy. It's in pretty much every episode. We've got Hank wearing it and it's new and it's golden.
[00:38] It's great. I've seen some new additions. Can we do a quick overview of what this addition comes with? Yeah, why not? Okay, so obviously you can see it's different colour for a start. It comes with a new stand. I mean, it's nice and easy to put it back on its stand.
[00:54] And it comes specifically with this mind control device. You just, you can see it right there. Here it is. It's got some text to it. It's not that device, though. It's a kit.
[01:06] You have to build it. No way. Yeah, absolutely. In Fallout Season 2, that's kind of like a big plot point is them building it. They do build it. Yeah. That was the whole point. In fact, in six out of the eight episodes, I think you see the Mind Control device. So from my point of view, it has to come with this kit.
[01:20] I just want to also clarify, you know, you are dressed very snazzily today, like a Vault tech employees that my control device does not actually mind control correct
[01:35] no it doesn't control people it's for display purposes only in the world of fallout as we'd like this to be an authentic sort of experience you can imagine this is the test piece that you put together it's the design is really
[01:48] funky it's got some actual little electronic components in it a couple of and some diodes and little capacitors and stuff that you put onto it, because they don't actually work. In the show, they assemble it themselves,
[02:01] and this was made from the CAD of the ones that they made for the show, so it's an identical replica of the one, with all the components inside, which is really cool. Wow. And why did you want to do the Overseer Edition Well we getting known for doing Pip We made a lot of them Yeah we have We made a few so far and I love the idea that this is a kind of high collectible
[02:24] There are a lot of collectibles out there where you have to collect hundreds of things. You know, the Funkos and the various things, they're lovely, but to get a set, you need a lot of stuff. And I've always thought it'd be really cool to have something that by making it in the premium positioning,
[02:38] we can add more things to it, because we've got a bit more budget that we can build lovely things. I think putting it all together and having different Pip-Boys that you can collect, having a range, and having them spread out over the years,
[02:50] means that you can start to build a range of stuff that's, you know, premium, but it's just one or two pieces, really carefully curated pieces. So that was my intention there. And I think when we do more Pip-Boys, and we will, there's no question about it,
[03:03] we will always try and think of those extra things that make it into something. It's almost like its own diorama. It's a special presentation that you can feel that you've got something of value. When we're putting this together, so designing a box, for example,
[03:18] thinking of the text to put on it, the same as a manual, thinking how to write it, it's basically how do you encapsulate that kind of feeling of sort of a bit of grunge, but future, there's some hope in it, but there's a lot of doom in it.
[03:32] How do you encapsulate all of that into a product? and trying here to make a product that isn't just a replica but it's like a little dip into the universe it's like we've gone into the universe and we've plucked something out
[03:44] let's turn it on shall we? yeah let's see what's going there we go because this is the overseer's Pip-Boy it's going to have a code that you put in to get in
[03:58] and we've put a code in for you to start with because you've only just got it parts of the Odyssey's Pip-Boy had a number of different screens on it a few different screens on it in the actual show oh yes
[04:10] okay is that what's that showing now you can tell me he's going the percentage is going okay yep okay there's sort of a yeah okay lovely
[04:24] I'm not an overseer of course so okay yeah the fusion is ready to activate exactly so that a whole a new different screen Yeah It sort of like a higher you have more admin access as the overseers You do you do
[04:40] The previous one, it was telling you which vault you'd been assigned to. This one's telling you that you sent the assignment out to people. Oh my god. So that's a bit more fun like that. One of the troubles we had in doing these things is often the clip you see in the show
[04:57] is very quick. speed it up because you only get to see it for a couple of seconds but these are animations that we have got from Kill to the Film Studio so they're accurate in fact the whole thing is as we said is accurate and these the box itself anyone who's got the the Fallout 3
[05:12] one will know these obviously this is based on the design of a crate from the show this is different to the Fallout 3 pit boy that we did as I say the catches around the side it's got this really nice features here so I think trying to put together a package I
[05:26] I mean, we will look at this a bit more, but even the material that we've chosen, the sort of stock that we choose for the manuals and things, should feel like it's in universe. Right.
[05:38] And I think that's important. And that is the... The whole point of these things is about extending the reach, allowing the user, the fan, to reach into the universe
[05:51] and pick something out and actually feel like they've got something that's real. Yeah. Obviously, there are technical requirements for manual. Right. But it does feel, I mean, even just like the artwork of the diagrams and all of the pieces when you're building the implant shift,
[06:06] like it does feel like I am in a vault right now. I love drawing that stuff. Having designed this on a piece of paper, through it by, like literally with a biro, you know, like a ballpoint pen to start with, you guys probably won't realize it out there,
[06:18] but even the curves, the sort of every part of it is thought through. and then you have to do it in a way where fans would get that and think, yes, that could be in the universe. And in fact, for our previous product,
[06:30] say the 76 Pip-Boy, we did a kit that you built it. That got back into the game. Yeah. So it was that good and we were that lucky that they said, yeah, we could have that as a quest in the game.
[06:42] So I think it will go circle. I would so love it if Amazon were putting this in the show and it would kind of legitimize this but it would then have come from us and it would then be in the show So if you looking out there Amazon they want that in the show You know Jeff Bezos I know you watching this
[06:57] Wow, Jeff Bezos. You guys, it kills the feeders, to be fair. You're the guys. The last thing before we go, is there just like one favorite thing that you are just so proud of it, kind of when you were in
[07:09] the design phase, that is now something that you're excited for people to discover when they buy those? I think, to be fair, discovering the mind control unit and making it
[07:21] and discovering in themselves not having the product delivered in one piece ready to go, but having it come as 40 separate components that they have to build. Because I think when you do that, you engage with something.
[07:35] If you challenge yourself to do it, the reward you get and the connection with the product that you get at the end of it is really, really cool. you feel so engaged when you've built it yourself. So if I was to choose one, I would say that it's the fact of basically tinkering with it
[07:51] and feeling like you're putting it to go, being able to play with it on another level. Yeah, I mean, the beauty of this is, and you've felt it, obviously we can't tell everyone, but it's got a kind of weight to it, is that most of the faulty components are inside.
[08:06] You screw it shut, you know they're in there, you've built it, you know what it's all about, you know how it works. You can just see there, I think if you look through, you can see this little orange bit there. There's like a little compressor tank inside.
[08:19] So there are all the components inside it. There's the little electrical components that you put together. I think the fact that it's secret and that you know it's in there, that places the whole thing of being part of a universe where you have this kind of secret handshake.
[08:35] You see somebody and you know that they're a player like you, and you know that they know the ins and outs of it, And then you know that you're kind of in their tribe. Yeah. And that, to me, is really cool. When you've built it, it's your own little thing.
[08:48] You know what's in it. You know how much it took to do it. And you've got that sense of achievement. I personally am very excited for the Pip-Boy Overseer's Edition. Ah, sorry. My neck is a little itchy.
[09:00] You'll get used to it. Used to what?
