0h 09m video Transcribed Jul 15, 2026
Beginner 3 min read For: Anime fans and Crunchyroll subscribers interested in understanding recent policy changes and their implications.

AI Summary

Crunchyroll is transitioning its merchandise store to be exclusive to Mega and Ultimate fan subscription tiers, locking out basic and mid-tier subscribers from purchasing physical goods like manga and figures. This move, announced for August 2026, has sparked outrage as it follows price hikes and the phasing out of physical distribution, signaling a potential end to physical manga availability through the platform.

[00:09]
Crunchyroll's Greedy Move

Crunchyroll is locking regular subscribers out of the Crunchyroll store, preventing them from buying merchandise like figures and manga unless they are on the highest subscription tiers (Mega or Ultimate).

[01:56]
Exclusive Store Access for High Tiers

Starting August 2026, the Crunchyroll store will be available exclusively to Mega and Ultimate fans, meaning basic and Fan+ Manga subscribers cannot purchase physical goods.

[04:03]
Timeline of Crunchyroll's Actions

Crunchyroll bought Right Stuf (a major merchandise seller), merged its store into Crunchyroll, then canceled physical distribution and pre-orders, and now locks store access behind high-tier subscriptions.

[05:31]
Subscription Tiers and Pricing

Current plans: Fan ($10), Fan+ Manga ($13.99), Mega Fan ($14), Ultimate Fan ($17.99). To access the store, users need at least Mega Fan ($14).

[06:39]
Price Hikes and Reduced Features

Crunchyroll raised prices by 20% earlier in 2026 while offering fewer features than a year ago, pushing users toward higher tiers.

[08:57]
Comparison to Netflix Prices

The effective baseline subscription to access both anime and merchandise is now $14, approaching Netflix's pricing levels.

Crunchyroll's decision to restrict store access to high-tier subscribers, combined with price increases and phasing out physical distribution, marks a significant shift toward monetization that may alienate regular fans and signal the end of physical manga sales through the platform.

[00:09] There's no way Crunchyroll is actually this greedy. There's actually I I give Crunch Roll a lot of but I'm not going to lie, this might be the greediest thing they've ever done. This hands down might

[00:24] be the greediest piece of move their company has ever done. What do you mean you're locking out just regular subscribers from using the Crunchroll store to buy merchandise, to buy figures and manga and stuff? What

[00:39] buy figures and manga and stuff? What the do you mean? I What?

[00:53] believe what I'm reading. You're telling me Crunch is actually this greedy? Like I give this company a lot of I know I do. But I did not think Crunch could actually stoop this low. Like it actually could go so low that honestly

[01:10] even Satan himself would be impressed by the greed. Like this is next level greed. I just Let me explain what this means. Okay. This is basically the equivalent of you walking into a bookstore and let's say

[01:25] you you pick up a copy of a manga. You you get a manga, okay? And you're like, it's a nice manga." And you you you take it to the desk and you know what they tell you? Oh, you can't buy this manga because you are not a premium ultra plus

[01:41] subscriber to our service. You're just a basic member. So, because of that, you just can look at our merchandise. One day though, you won't even be able to pay to look at her merchandise. I'm just like that. That's what Criteral is

[01:56] doing. That they are they are legitimately telling you that you cannot actually buy merchandise from their store unless you pay some of their highest paid subscriptions. That is actually insane. Like I'm not

[02:12] even going to lie. That is probably the one of the greediest things I have ever seen ever from this company. Like what do you mean that Crunch is locking fake, by the way, it's not. Here's the source from Manga Alerts themselves.

[02:26] Leaning to the source, which I'll pull up. This literally came out, I'm assuming today. Um, a new Crunch store and member experience is coming soon. This August, we are transitioning the Crunch store to a brand new shopping

[02:40] experience that will be available exclusively for Mega and Ultimate fans. The new store captures the excitement of convention exclusive merchandise,

[02:52] collectibles, curated drops, and limited release products inspired by the anime series you love. But before the new experience launches, we're celebrating with a summer sale with 50% off selected items beginning July 14th. Please note

[03:07] items beginning July 14th. Please note that beginning July 13th, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. PT, select items will be designated as final sale and refunds or returns will only be accepted for damaged or defective products. We know you may have

[03:22] questions and we prepared a fact to help provide more information. And so you basically go here. What is the country store? In August, Gundrol store will available exclusively to Mega and

[03:36] Ultimate fans. So, if you're below those tiers, the highest tiers, you're out of luck. I'll show an example of what those tiers are in just a second and the Crunchroll store when it changes? The new experience will feature curated

[03:48] won't find anywhere else. It'll be available for select Crunchroll memberships for mega and ultimate fans. More details are coming soon. So basically if to get the gist of this, Crunchroll is locking the basic

[04:03] subscribers that pay for their service out of this. They're not allowing you to even buy merchandise anymore. So let me let me give the timeline here. Crunch buys right stuff. Sony Crunch buys right

[04:17] stuff. That is one of the largest merchandise sellers online to be able to stuff. They buy them out and eventually they consume their store into their brand of crunch store basically forming a bigger monopoly and then they don't

[04:31] uphold their their promise of with like holding the orders that were hold on are now part of the crunch roll brand. They don't uphold those promises at all. And then they call out and say they're canceling their physical distribution.

[04:45] no longer going to be physically distributing stuff. That was announced a while ago by the way. And actually I'll show mongerts talks about this actually here. Um wonder what happened to the Anniplex titles. Uh no here. Uh was

[04:57] physical manga and anime from their stores or are they planning to phase mention anything about them phasing out physical manga and anime, but I would locking in any pre-orders. For those that don't know, it was announced a

[05:10] out physical stuff. They didn't mention in this announcement, but we know it's canceling and phasing out like, you know, physical game disc, they're doing know, physical game disc, they're doing it to anime and manga.

[05:31] an example of the subscription tiers for you guys can actually see what you have to pay now just to even buy merchandise from Crunchroll. So, as you can see on plans for Crunchroll service and their prices. Now I would like to remind

[05:44] everybody at the beginning of this year for you know 2026 Crunch increased their prices by a huge margin like 20% increase. Okay and this affected a lot. This affected basically the prices and everything of all this and basically as

[05:58] beginning of this year it made no sense because a year ago there was more features that Crunchroll had than they do now. Their service is actually even in a worse state than they had a year ago which is insane. And basically they

[06:11] had the audacity to raise prices. And then recently they did like a massive like uh thing where you could subscribe and all that for only new subscribers could actually come in and uh you know basically have a lower price briefly for

[06:24] their numbers up where they were pretty successful. But overall it's very clear that Crunch is doing everything they can to get as much money from people to incentivize you to buy their most expensive subscription service. And

[06:39] with the whole Crunch Roll store thing where you're getting locked out of it. So basically, if you are a fan and just paying $10 a month for Crunch Roll, you are not going to be able to have access to um basically using the Crunch Roll

[06:53] to um basically using the Crunch Roll store. So even giving them $10. No. And also, I'm assuming if you are a fan plus manga, you do the $13.99 here, you cannot also access the store. That's my my understanding. And um I'm assuming if

[07:08] manga, you would probably have access because it has the mega fan attached. But more or less what Crunch is saying, to even be able to access the ability to read like or to watch anime and to access the store, you need to pay about

[07:23] $14 a month. Now, that's not including the manga subscription. If you want to read manga on their site for whatever reason and try to support manga offers legally, you'll have to pay straight up $17 a month. And that's not including

[07:36] the next plan which is $17.99. You can see the what the incentive what they're doing here. Like you could easily see it like le let's explain the the facts here. Okay, let's say you are someone that um wants to read manga, wants to

[07:48] for it. I'm not going to judge you. I will look at you, but just do it. But anyways, I if you want to do that, go for it. But the thing is, if you paid for the experience to watch anime, read manga on their site, you're going to be

[08:01] paying $14. So, at this point, you might as well be a mega fan to access their store. But then you're locked out of the manga, so you're like, "Oh, I want to have manga, so let's just pay the $17." But then you're like, "Wait a minute. I

[08:13] mean, I you know, I'm only a few cents off of the uh the ultimate fan." And you could kind of see the the tumble down domino effect of what Crunch is doing here. They're basically trying to say being a regular fan is just stupid. Why

[08:27] yourself. And then if you do the fan plus manga, it's also very stupid because you might as well do mega fan for you have access to the store. Then going to do this one." And you can see what what Crunch is more or less saying

[08:40] is that their subscription now is $14 plus. It's no longer $10 a month. It is $14 baseline just to be able to access their anime and merchandise catalog. And if you want to access the manga, that is basically 17 almost $18. So this is so

[08:57] much greed. It is astounding. Like, it is actually astounding. Like, this is a subscription that is getting into the same realm as like Netflix's prices.

[09:20] absolute terrible company. Like, this is I I I cannot believe they have the audacity to do something like that. I will leave it at that though. If you subscribe. Leave a like down below. Does help out a lot. Get the word out on what

[09:34] help out a lot. Get the word out on what Crunch Roll is currently doing. CBL.
