[00:59] guy, so weird stuff happening is just like part of the whole thing. But since the harmonium becomes a pivotal part of Barry's coping strategy, none of it is random. Chaos, yes, but arbitrary, no. >> Okay, you have my home phone number,

[01:12] >> You see, kids, a home phone is what ET wanted to use, but his alien that to Elliot. This film starts with several warners, but this one is over 2 really helps us to start to see the world through his eyes.

[04:54] >> Who knew Gail the Snail could be this Lynn Rice Cub from her most important role, Pizza Delivery Girl in Weezer's The Good Life music video. I do not care for how relatable this is. That feeling

[05:54] >> And such an alarming moment in so many ways. Obviously frightening, I'm sure, literally nobody is worried about Barry. They just berate him. It's brutal scene. >> Can you help me? >> Barry, I'm a dentist. I What kind of

[06:08] your problems? >> I don't want my sisters to know. Okay, >> And good on Barry for trying to get help. It breaks my heart that Barry's trust gets betrayed by Walter. >> I sometimes cry a lot for no reason.

[06:26] It's so abrupt. It's maybe a little funny, but it's also so honest. Ah, look nice button at the end of the film. The stalker in the background in red is stopped and then almost walks away when he looks in her direction and then

[07:49] about the fantasy he's supposed to be taking part in is pretty telling. >> I wish I was making more, doing a little bit better, but I can't get over a certain hump. I will. I'll crack something very soon, I think, and really

[08:02] >> Also, that the primary thing he's willing to talk about are his business aspirations. And this is again two insanely long wonders back to back. The first is 3 minutes and 13 seconds long and the second is 3 minutes and 18

[08:15] seconds long. What's truly wild is how much dialogue Sandler and Ashley Clark each of their performances. Barry's nervousness and loneliness coming sexy, but also clearly feeling out Barry in part because he's obviously acting

[08:29] because she's trying to figure out if he's a good Mark. Also, the first werer is locked off. The camera just pans back and forth observing Barry. The second around changing the whole tone of the moment.

[08:41] To this day, unbeaten tech. >> Hey, what are you doing? How are you? >> He's such a pure soul. He doesn't clock emboldens them. >> I was wondering if maybe you could help

[08:54] >> Ah, there it is. Love how Barry is backing up as if he can escape the hearing the unnerving score with us. Lance is wearing a suit. See, he gets >> You going on a trip? >> No, I'm not.

[09:07] >> No, I'm not. >> That No, I'm not. that stresses me out, and it's definitely what Barry is dealing with.

[09:23] somebody. It already did hurt somebody. >> Pure realism. And also the second >> He's wearing that goddamn suit again. I don't know why he's wearing that suit. He doesn't usually dress like that. >> The smile on Lena's face, the way Emily

[09:36] >> Friend of mine from work. We were in the neighborhood and she had to pick up her we go in. So, did you want to go? We're going to go eat. Let's go. >> Barry clearly needs some help, but so does Khloe O'Brien. Well, really, all of

[09:48] struggling with mental health or being neurode divergent. But boy oh boy, if I clearly needs therapy put all the blame on someone else and said they needed therapy, I'd have many lots of nickels. I don't even know if you'd really want

[10:01] scared? >> I mean, there's clearly a strain in the family. I can't say I'd be breaking glass doors, but yikes. This is extra state of being. >> Did you ask Walter to get you a shrink?

[10:13] >> We all get that. This sucks, right? You're worried? Help Walter out. Find a to Barry. Perfect example of why Barry didn't want his sisters to know. kind of common for the time. >> What guy in Toledo are you talking

[10:26] about? talking about the guy. I'll come over to you. I'll tell you later. I'll just come over to you in in a second. >> Read the room, Lance. But yeah, people assume life is easy for everyone don't always get it.

[10:40] my sister? >> Perfect reaction. Not necessarily an plowing through really feels consistent for him. >> Are you guys hurt? Are you okay? >> Oh my god.

[10:53] gives me anxiety. And I am Lena, just slowly backing away from the chaos. >> Sure. >> Do you want to pick me up? number for you? >> Sure.

[11:07] worked at multiple places where the mechanics displayed topless lady cutouts on the walls, I'd think that this was over the top. It's not. It's accurate. >> Just made a war for yourself that you can't afford. While scams might be even

[11:21] more common now, this scam is very specific to the early as a quick Google the time, even though they'd still take the money he has. But in the year of our riding horses and writing with ink and quill by candlelight, so that would

[11:34] say I know where phone sex workers most commonly work, but that small office is a reminder that a job is a job. The styling of Philip Seymour Hoffman is incredible. It's so specific. That necklace, the hair, the jacket.

[11:47] >> Hit him at his house first. See what this little bad boy businessman >> I'm not sure anyone did it better. The way he carries himself, we'll never get peace, King. >> I saw your picture and I really wanted

[11:59] >> Absolutely love the implication that she tried to say this earlier. >> But might have chickened out. >> I came to drop my car off on purpose to try and meet you. >> Very nice of you to say. Terrific.

[12:14] And I think it would be cute coming from any gender to any gender. But I also think that most guys are just going to melt and immediately fall hopelessly in someone as attractive and sweet as Emily freaking Watson.

[12:27] >> This DJ Justice, this morning DJ that I really like. And hate it, but it's perfect. He's getting comfortable, so he's sharing something her in the eyes while talking. It's so

[12:40] just to make sure she's still with him. In contrast, while Lena is talking, he much more eye contact with her because he can just enjoy what she's saying, and thinks of him in that moment. It's so well done.

[12:53] >> If you were to spend $3,000, that would get you a million freaking flyer miles, the rest of your life. >> Fun fact, this is based on a true story. PT Anderson read a Time magazine article about a guy named David Phillips who did

[13:05] about a guy named David Phillips who did basically the same thing. the immediate cut to quiet. >> Can I just stay?

[13:17] Get out of here. >> I never expect those words from this >> I never expect those words from this guy, but they're really perfect.

[13:30] like truck air break release sounds as instruments, and these two take what even though it isn't, I'm noticing how stark her red outfit is compared to that Barry is Superman. And after thinking I was such a genius for

[13:44] taking credit. >> The harmonium that has ended up in your office. Did you steal that from the street? You did, didn't you? >> He lies about so many things when he feels caught or backed into a corner.

[14:00] >> Take a left just up here. >> Okay, I'm going to go. >> This is such a funny choice. While my assumption is that they probably filmed a conversation and decided it was superfluous, cutting from the car to him

[14:13] leaving is so abrupt. >> And bye-bye. And bye-bye. And bye-bye. >> And bye-bye. And bye-bye. And bye-bye. You and bye-bye, you stupid mother. punishing yourself for them isn't a sign of anything. And I'm totally normal for

[14:27] >> This is Barry. >> It's me. It's Lena. wouldn't put it past Georgia to have found him at Lena's. [Music] epic. So sch smultzy in the best way

[14:42] with this like classic romantic film music, but also somehow still very John Bryan and the fact that she was already waiting at the door. Love. I'll see you later. It's also so cute that he came all the way back for the

[14:54] didn't. So we're just going to take this >> I honestly totally forgot that's why he uses that phrase with Philip Sumer Hoffman. >> Ow. Ouch. Ouch. the ouch before he gets

[15:07] >> Ow. Ouch. Ouch. the ouch before he gets in. weren't going to get any classic Sandler noises. Look at you. So silly. live. >> Fair. I love that he takes it to heart

[15:21] >> Okay. And I have to get more pudding for this trip to Hawaii. As I just said that >> Masking up. He knows when things sound weird, and he so calmly explains that before. >> That that that money right I just gave

[15:36] you is actually a lot of money to me. 99 cents. [Music] >> It all falls apart. But this moment of great, even while the score is still keeping us on edge.

[15:55] involuntary hand movements when he's upset that I'd never noticed before. Ha, the cuts spell love. pudding. Oh, get there, but oh, wait. I'm an adult. I can't run. I don't care. I need to go.

[16:10] can't run. I don't care. I need to go. Nope. That feels weird. Duval as he slow-mo almost disappears into the glare again. He starts to run

[16:22] maybe a little embarrassed, then just says screw it and runs again. Dude is >> I'm sick of this. >> Stoping treating me this way. Give me your number. I'lling kill you. >> This is the number one, maybe tied for

[16:35] number one funny moment to me. Does he go a little too far? Yeah, but other >> Tell me why you like >> There's no reason for you to treat me >> You're killing me. You're killing me with the way you me.

[16:48] already empowered just by how much he likes Lena, which really sets up the tire iron later. >> Hello. A the little ding as she says hello and the phone booth lights up.

[17:02] [Applause] [Music] voice. Let's all greet our loved ones with disenthusiasm from now on. It just makes your heart sore. Her little arm swings. Could this get any cuter?

[17:15] Perfect shot, perfect scene. Makes sense why it's the cover/ poster. 30 seconds anyone walking by them. It really is like that sometimes. And him trying to shake her hand is so on brand for his character. And that little he lets out

[17:27] rules. >> Really looks like Hawaii here. >> One of those silly lines where you also know exactly what he means. Goodness Watson and her subtle looks and expressions? You got to love an iris

[17:41] oldtimey because you rarely see this anymore, but then following their adorable. >> I want to bite your cheek and ch it so cute. I just want to smash you with a sledgehammer and squeeze it. You're so

[17:57] >> Again, two types of people. Those who totally get this and think it's darling >> This is funny. >> Yeah, your freak. >> I don't have any business here. I came

[18:11] because he feels safe with her. And I know I just said like 3 minutes ago that is cute when the person is attractive and you're into them, but dang, that one would be a bridge too far for some. Fortunately, Lena really gets Barry.

[18:25] >> Otherwise, I'm pretty sure that uh the police can be contacted and and I could do that. Confidence is growing. Great shot. That whole film has been setting us up with long contemplative wonders and then this one just goes haywire

[18:42] both of them. The immediate change of expression when he sees she's bleeding. knocked Barry to the ground in the first encounter. Second, he gives the tire

[18:56] best thing is that Barry is fully in control. He honestly might be the calmst could have been Barry beating these men to death, but he is cool, calm, and collected and just mollywops them. >> Hello, sir. My name is Barry Egan. I

[19:10] >> Shut the up. >> This conversation is a masterclass in >> All right, go yourself. That has >> And this might not sound like a compliment, but Philip Seymour Hoffman

[19:23] was the king of saying go f yourself. >> Shut up. Shut up. Shut shut up. other quite a lot. >> Did you just say go myself?

[19:37] >> And a very on the-nose depiction of a typical bully. Dishes it out but can't mention but that Barry doesn't even take the time to hang up the phone. It just >> She was discharged. >> She was discharged. Okay.

[19:50] Sandler makes it clear with just his stance and expression that he knows he screwed up. city and state, please. >> Somewhere in Utah. Can I have the listing for DND mattress man? >> And see, this is where his, let's say,

[20:31] him look way more imposing than normal. >> Think you can be a pervert and not pay tightening. >> I'm a nice man. I mind my own business. So you tell me that's that before I beat the hell from you.

[20:46] scarier than beat the hell out of you. It being not quite right, but said with such fervor would be my sign to bow out. >> I have so much strength in me. You have no idea. I have a love in my life. It makes me stronger than anything you can

[21:00] >> Correct. Superman. His yellow sun and ll >> You came all the way from LA to tell me this. >> Echart Auto Body where Barry's office is is just about 10 hours from Provo, Utah.

[22:26] metaphor becoming Barry's red cape. Also hugging. It's just adorable. Part of this movie is that I had no real idea what to expect. Even if love is in the the cutest little love story of all time. But PT Anderson always sneaks some

[22:41] have been surprised. And I'm never going to scoff at the message love conquers all because it makes me feel warm and fuzzy and I enjoy that. Maybe it doesn't the confidence and strength to start sticking up for himself. And I touched

[22:54] idea that Barry is Superman. And there are plenty of things as evidence that I he'd never flown before, but is spending a lot of time focused on being able to fly. And I talked about his strength, but we also see him break those sliding

[23:07] when he smashes the funger handle, he says it's an older model, but maybe he's brother cowering in the back is the best evidence. He knows he can't mess with typical role for Adam Sandler, and I realize that he's not alone in proving
