"The title promises a broad look at gasoline in games, but the video is a rambling personal reflection with limited structured information."

AI Summary

This video discusses the recently announced gasoline mechanic in Grand Theft Auto 6, where players will need to fuel their vehicles. The creator speculates on how it might work, compares it to similar mechanics in other games, and ultimately supports the design choice despite potential annoyances.

[[00:39]]
GTA 6 Vehicle Types

GTA 6 will feature two types of cars: gas and electric. Hybrids are uncertain.

[[01:04]]
Gas Mechanic Details

Refueling will take about 10 seconds via a quick time event, pressing R2 to pump gas. It will be more of an issue when stealing cars, adding risk.

[[02:11]]
Encouraging Vehicle Attachment

The mechanic encourages caring for your vehicle, similar to the horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, promoting ownership and maintenance.

[[02:36]]
Games with Gas Mechanics

The creator lists games with gas mechanics, including racing sims, pubg, Pacific Drive, My Summer Car, The Long Drive, and Jailbreak.

[[04:17]]
Deadly Premonition's Gas System

In this game, there is only one gas station in Greenville, with limited hours. Running out of gas leaves you stranded.

[[04:45]]
Merna Falls' Weird Gas Mechanic

An open-world PS1 game where running out of gas triggers a bizarre Flintstone-style push mechanic, though it's rarely seen.

[[06:13]]
Final Fantasy 15's Gas Mechanic

In FF15, running out of gas makes you push the car. A full tank lasts about 25 minutes, with upgrades for a bigger tank.

[[07:20]]
Outlander's Gas Mechanic

A 1992 game where running out of gas forces you to shoot biker enemies to find gas cans to bring back to your car.

[[09:34]]
Support for Gas in GTA 6

The creator views gas mechanics as a deliberate design choice that contrasts with escapism, adding friction to gameplay.

A specific, quirky example of restrictive gas mechanics in a previous game.

[04:17]

[00:02] I've been putting off for a bit. It might be the most controversial thing announced in some of those GTA previews, and that is gasoline. That's right.

[00:14] We're going to [groaning]

[00:26] people for Grand Theft Auto 6. Should we be putting gas in cars? I mean, you can get big, you can get skinny, you can work out, you can not work out. So, this? Now, there's still a lot of fuzzy details about how this works. But from

[00:39] two different kinds of cars. There's going to be gas cars [music] and there's going to be electric vehicles. Whether there's going to be some sort of hybrid in between those two, I don't know. Now, of course, with electric cars, that

[00:52] really don't have any details as to how that works, what that process is like, whether or not you have to like hang out at a gas station for x amount of time midcar chase, I don't know. But we do at

[01:04] least have a few details on how fueling a vehicle works. And from the sounds of it, it sounds like it's a quick sort of QTE, a quick time event that lasts about 10 seconds. and will likely see your character holding a gas pump. Press R2

[01:19] to pump gas. Now, based on what we know, this seems to be more of an issue if you steal a car. That means there's a risk in taking a car that does not belong to having, you know, maybe take it to the gas station, which is always a fun thing

[01:33] gas station, which is always a fun thing to steal car. you want to get away, kind of have to take a detour to a gas station because nothing says living life on the edge like having fuel your car up. Uh, this is an

[01:46] interesting twist in the formula of Grand Theft Auto because in so much of want, right? You and you just want to go get the car. You see a car that's that's cooler, and you're like, I'm going to get that one. That's the one I

[01:58] want. You get out of your car. You abandon your car to get this cool car schmuck who's driving it hasn't been filling it up with gas and now you have the wanted level. In general, it seems from what we know that this game is

[02:11] incentivizing you to really take care of the stuff you have, the guns you have, the guns that belong to you and the stuff like cuz it's like a few, you know, similar to your horse in Red Dead Redemption 2. That thing is going to be

[02:23] your gear and everything on it. In this case, they kind of want your car to be about the vehicle you have. Take care of it, fuel it up, store stuff in the trunk, all that jazz. Now, considering how little we actually know, I just want

[02:36] to take a moment to just in general talk about the inclusion of filling your vehicle with gas in games because it has existed in the history of games. video game, there's been some sort of idea of games featuring this [music] as

[02:52] a mechanic. prominently racing games where you have to pull over to the side to put more gas in your car. And then in most recent years, there's just a lot of driving simulation games. Games like My Summer Car or what is it? I have notes

[03:05] about all these games. Um, These are all games. this only has one game on it. The Long Drive and Jolipe. These are all games

[03:19] that kind of lean into sort of like the quirkiness sort of has habard situation many things that involve having a car. There's other games like Pacific Drive where your car is essentially one of the main mechanics. So therefore, of course,

[03:34] PUBG, which kind of have this sort of tension and simulation of having to survive, you would put gas in cars. But there's just also this other sort of sector of games that just have this in there that feels almost like it doesn't

[03:49] that just somewhere in the design they wanted to create this sort of simulation those are the games I want to talk about. Maybe even praise because this dude likes friction in games even if it's unnecessary and even if it involves

[04:04] something like a car because in real [music] life I hate cars. I haven't had a car for seven years and I live a great life without it. The three games I want them being Deadly Premonition. That's right. I took this video as an excuse to

[04:17] talk about the game Deadly Premonition. That is a game that requires you to fill your car up with gas and does so in such a strange way because there's only one gas station in Greenville. That gas station is only open for a certain

[04:30] get gas during those times. If you did want to get other cars with gas, you police cars in the police car lot or in the case that your car runs out of gas, those of you who are complaining about GTA 6, [music] just know that it's not

[04:45] like Deadly Premonition. It's also not going to be like a game like Merna Falls, another weird game from 1998 for the PS1, which was an open world simulation mystery game where you had a car [music] uh that had gas. In this

[04:59] that's weird about this game, there's only one gas station. Gas is free. You sure it's open 24/7. I've played this game, but apparently if little hatch opens up in the bottom of the car in

[05:15] which the main character, Matthew, has like Flintstone style push his car along. The weird thing is though, I cannot find any proof of this. I've not the game. I've not run out of gas in that game. every let's play I try to

[05:28] find in this game, no one has managed to run out of gas to do that. Uh, and I think it's because the game is so difficult to control and it's so every feel good at all that I the last thing you would probably want to have to do is

[05:42] that's like. Instead, your car can get stuck and there's a phone book in the out of that situation. But here's the kicker. It doesn't. It It delivers it to have to go walk there and walking in that game sucks. Basically, I'm just

[05:58] examples that involve car mechanics that are annoying and I can guarantee you GTA like these games. Another game I want to mention which is more AAA and mainstream is Final Fantasy 15. The boy band Final Fantasy. Is that accurate? Wait, what?

[06:13] Now, in this game is another example where you have a car, you can run out of gas, you have to push the car as as your rag tag gang of uh zipper boyband from what I understand, the likelihood of you running out of gas is pretty

[06:28] slim. It takes about 25 minutes to go through a tank of gas, but you can also upgrade your vehicle to get a bigger fuel tank, and eventually I guess it can fly. Um, [music] that is that is one of the weird games

[06:42] that you need to put in it and [music] uh but it seems like they kind of ironed some of it out. It's not as wonky donkey as [music] Daily Premonition and Mazerna Falls. There's one more game I want to talk about which came to me uh while I

[06:56] was sitting alone in silence today thinking about this video. A game that thinking about this video. A game that did not poop poop, but there's one game that uh came to me while I was sitting in silence thinking about this. I

[07:08] like, "You absolutely have to put gas in your car." And I could not remember the name of it. And in fact, Google was failing me. All the other search engines me all the games with cars and gas and all that jazz." And not a single one of

[07:20] them mentioned it. [music] My brain did it. That's something AI can't do. And it's a game called Outlander that came out in 1992 for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. It is basically road warrior like a legally distinct road

[07:33] warrior game uh where you are driving first person in your car. Your car has the engine's health and then of [music] course gasoline. If you run out of gasoline in that game, you have to go out into the wasteland and shoot biker

[07:47] dudes who try to attack you on motorcycles with chains. And apparently cans on them cuz that's the only way to get it. You have to shoot them. The gas bring it to back to your car. I really just only wanted an excuse to talk about

[07:59] that game and that it came to me like some deep-seated memory that like like there's a game I can think of that I used to play with gas. I'm going to have no idea what I'm talking. Obviously, you've been watching Jake

[08:14] host these videos and you probably miss him. I swear to God he's okay. Um, [music] but when I found out about having to fill your cars with gas in GTA 6, [music] it's the sort of like weirdo mechanic

[08:27] it's the sort of like weirdo mechanic thing that is like the antithesis of what video games often are, which is an escape from reality. And this idea of like being able to not have to do the mundane crap that you do in real life,

[08:40] like having to worry about putting gas in your car. And that every single time a game comes along that chooses to have this mechanic in it to me feels like some sort of like deliberate design choice, some sort of intentional choice

[08:54] in which the developers had to sit there and be like, "Okay, we're doing this. make the player put gas in their cars." that it existed in games like Dudly

[09:06] Premonition because it's a game that ultimately doesn't really need it. Like it's an open world game where it's a survival horror, but that game has all sorts of weird inclusions of design choices like having to eat and sleep and

[09:19] bathe and put gas in your car. Not too dissimilar from Grand Theft Auto 6. Where did Grand Theft Auto 6 get it from? Am I right? microphone and just talk about this weird little game mechanic that exists

[09:34] opinion. [music] Uh whether or not it should really exist in them at all. And that does it, so I can't help but be like, "Hey, that's weird." In GTA 6, Rockstar, I support your weird choice to do it, even though it makes a lot of

[09:49] going to have to like stop mid chase or figure out some way to do it or keep stealing cars, you know, until they get away. Anyways, away. Anyways, thanks for watching.
