Level 1 is the most important part of top lane
45sHigh-stakes early game analysis with a near-first-blood fail hooks viewers.
▶ Play ClipThis video breaks down a Jax vs Mordekaiser matchup in low Platinum, demonstrating how game knowledge and wave control concepts are more important than mechanics for winning lane. The creator shows that missing even one key concept can cost you the lane, while applying multiple concepts correctly can secure a win.
Level 1 is crucial in top lane as it dictates the next three levels. You must know who is stronger at level 1 in any matchup.
Consider champion type (AD vs AP) and abilities. Jax starts E, blocking auto attacks, while Mordekaiser starts Q (shorter cooldown). Jax wins extended fights, Mord wants to poke.
The creator mistimed E activation and auto-attacked a minion, losing the all-in and forcing a flash. This shows how small mistakes can lose advantages.
Despite lower health, the creator maintains lane control due to level advantage. Proper wave management is key: crash three waves for a good recall and slow push back.
At level 3, the creator trades to weaken Mordekaiser before crashing the cannon wave, using E to reduce damage and hit minions.
A freeze requires at least four minions. After crashing, the wave slow pushes back, giving the creator item advantage without needing TP.
When Skarner ganks, the creator chooses not to help because he is low health and level 4, risking a 2v2 loss and losing minions. He focuses on wave control instead.
Mordekaiser stays in lane too long after the gank, missing a recall opportunity. The creator baits him, recalls, buys Sheen, and TPs back to secure a kill.
Game knowledge and wave control are more important than mechanics in League of Legends. Mastering concepts like level 1 strength, wave management, and recall timers can help you climb to Masters and beyond.
"The title accurately reflects the video's focus on wave control and game knowledge, though it also covers broader concepts."

Level 1 Determines Lane
Emphasizes that level 1 is the most critical part of top lane, setting up the next three levels.
0:34Small Mistakes Cost Advantages
Shows how a single misclick (auto-attacking a minion) can turn a winning all-in into a lost flash.
1:28Risk-Reward in Ganks
Demonstrates the importance of evaluating risk-reward before helping a gank, especially when low health.
5:55Mordekaiser's Recall Mistake
Highlights how staying in lane too long after a gank can be punished by a recall and TP play.
6:58[00:00] league of legends is all about concepts
[00:01] game knowledge mechanics are nowhere
[00:03] near as important if you learn all the
[00:05] concepts and bring them all together you
[00:07] easily make it to at least masters then
[00:09] you have to refine them and actually get
[00:10] good at the game and that's what the
[00:11] climb from master is a challenger is
[00:13] just missing one or two important
[00:14] concepts can make you lose a lane
[00:16] especially against a player that isn't
[00:17] missing that game knowledge today i'm
[00:19] going to show you a perfect example of
[00:20] this in a low platinum mmr game where
[00:22] i'm on jax vs mordekaiser i'm going to
[00:24] break down a bunch of different concepts
[00:25] where they all could lead to a one or
[00:27] lost lane don't worry if you don't play
[00:29] jacks or mordekaiser though as the
[00:31] concept will apply to any champion so
[00:32] let's jump right into this lane one
[00:34] could argue level one is the most
[00:35] important part of top lane as the dick
[00:36] takes the next three levels and like i
[00:38] always say in loilo i wouldn't lane in
[00:40] the first three levels 90 of the time
[00:42] you need to know who's stronger at level
[00:43] one in any matchup that you play do you
[00:45] know who's stronger here
[00:49] well even if you don't have the match of
[00:50] experience like me
[00:52] you could know who wins level one here
[00:54] just by thinking about two things first
[00:56] mordekaiser is an ap champion where jax
[00:58] is an aed one this normally means the ad
[01:00] champion will win a long extended fight
[01:02] on top of this jax starts e at level 1
[01:04] which blocks autos from minions and
[01:05] champions this is obviously really
[01:07] important when autos are going to be the
[01:08] main form of damage when both champions
[01:10] only have one ability the thing is
[01:11] mordekaiser q which is what he starts at
[01:13] level 1 is a shorter cooldown than
[01:15] jack's e so mord wants to avoid level 1
[01:17] all in and just poke with q
[01:19] remember how i said just missing one
[01:20] piece of game knowledge can win and lose
[01:22] the lane well i actually don't have the
[01:24] matchup experience here but because of
[01:25] the things i just talked about i look
[01:27] for a level one all in when he walks up
[01:28] and auto attacks me here i make sure to
[01:30] turn on my e after auto attacking more
[01:32] because that's when his minions will
[01:33] start hitting me the more minion autos i
[01:35] soak the more damage my e will do i
[01:37] should have turned it on to block mord's
[01:38] first auto but i mistimed it at this
[01:41] point i have my passive on and conquer
[01:43] and we established that i went all in
[01:44] sadly i wasted auto attack on a minion
[01:46] which made me feel like i would lose the
[01:48] fight because of his q coming up he
[01:50] flashes to try and finish me off but i
[01:51] flash as well and survive so because i
[01:53] accidentally auto attacked a minion i
[01:55] don't punish the board and end up having
[01:56] to flash away i should have easily got
[01:58] first blood here because he didn't
[01:59] respect that my level 1 was stronger i
[02:01] started corrupting potion though and
[02:03] have biscuits so i have plenty of
[02:04] sustain i don't need to recall on top of
[02:06] this i have the push advantage since i
[02:08] was auto attacking minions at level one
[02:09] remember how i said the level one
[02:10] determines the next levels as well even
[02:12] when i have lower health than him i
[02:14] still mean control the lane for these
[02:15] first three waves level advantages are
[02:17] too important with this big health
[02:18] disadvantage i would still win 1v1 if i
[02:20] jumped in right now it's important that
[02:22] i control the minion wave properly from
[02:23] here though if i push too fast right now
[02:25] the wave will half crash on the tower
[02:27] meaning the melee minions will be in
[02:28] tower range and the ranged ones won't
[02:30] then the next wave will arrive and
[02:31] mordekais will be able to safely farm
[02:32] under tower and will hit level 3 around
[02:34] the same time as me it would be really
[02:36] hard to fully crash the wave to get a
[02:37] good recall off if that happens this is
[02:39] an extremely common mistake in the wii
[02:41] low and toppling you want to crash 3
[02:42] waves which makes the enemy laner take a
[02:44] long time under tower to farm the wave
[02:46] and it will push back towards you
[02:48] this also makes so you don't have to tp
[02:49] back to lane i'll show you exactly what
[02:51] i mean here and again this is one of
[02:53] those core pieces of information that
[02:54] you need to understand or you lose or
[02:56] miss an opportunity to win a lane
[02:58] anyways getting back to the gameplay i'm
[02:59] basically lasting at this point because
[03:01] i need to make sure i don't finish
[03:02] clearing this wave until the next wave
[03:04] gets here mordekaiser is respecting my
[03:05] level 2 as well but if he walks up i
[03:07] would definitely look for a trade i used
[03:09] my q here to get the cs though and i
[03:11] knew he would hit level 2 from this
[03:12] minion so i didn't trade with my q down
[03:14] now the third wave is arriving and
[03:16] mordekaiser actually clears a big chunk
[03:18] of it with his q and his e but since he
[03:20] doesn't have those i'm free to hit the
[03:22] minions i'm fully focused on clearing
[03:24] this canon wave and crashing it for a
[03:25] reset
[03:26] but i hit level 3 here so i jump in for
[03:28] a trade with my level advantage this
[03:30] isn't to kill him or anything though
[03:31] it's just to weaken him so he can't
[03:33] pressure me while i'm trying to crash
[03:34] the wave i didn't use my either though
[03:36] since that's a big cooldown and without
[03:37] it i'm much more vulnerable and when
[03:39] mordekaiser wakes up to try and trade
[03:40] back then i use my e you might not know
[03:42] this but jax e reduces the aoe damage he
[03:45] takes when he's using it so i reduced
[03:46] mord's q damage while also using the aoe
[03:49] damage from the e to hit all the minions
[03:50] i had to make sure that the cannon
[03:52] minion actually got into tower range
[03:53] though if it didn't i would only have
[03:54] two options either stay and try and
[03:56] crash the next wave or recall and tp
[03:58] back right away this is because the wave
[04:00] would freeze so if i didn't tip you back
[04:02] to lane i would lose a ton of minions as
[04:03] i ran back enough minions at the lane
[04:05] can easily be decided by that you might
[04:07] be wondering why the wave won't freeze
[04:09] when there are still three minions there
[04:10] after the cannon dies
[04:12] and that's because you need at least
[04:13] four minions to actually freeze those
[04:15] three range ones aren't enough
[04:16] especially when they are missing a lot
[04:17] of health already the wave will slow
[04:19] push to me at this point now this is
[04:20] another crucial part of the lane like i
[04:22] said it's slow pushing to me so i don't
[04:23] have to tp back i will have my gold spin
[04:26] here when i get back and mordekaiser
[04:27] won't so i will have the item advantage
[04:29] but since it's slow pushing you'll have
[04:30] a minion advantage and a level advantage
[04:32] if i'm someone like irelia here where i
[04:34] can easily clear a bunch of minions i
[04:36] have a ton of kill pressure jax is good
[04:38] in this scenario too because his e
[04:39] avoids minion damage but i still have to
[04:41] be careful best case scenario would be i
[04:43] bait out mordekaiser's q and e and dodge
[04:45] them and then i just all win
[04:47] if mordekaiser doesn't want to take the
[04:49] risk of dying here he can recall now and
[04:50] tp back to lane but then i'll have the
[04:52] tp advantage let's see what happens
[04:54] though when i walk into lane you see the
[04:55] footsies i'm playing right away walking
[04:57] in and out of his q and e range to try
[04:59] and bait it but once he clears my wave i
[05:01] have to back off even after he uses his
[05:02] q now that my next wave is here i want
[05:04] to try and kill as many minions as
[05:05] possible so i can hit level 4 along with
[05:07] trimming the wave down to prepare for my
[05:09] all in while doing that i'm trying to
[05:10] bait out his abilities like i talked
[05:12] about earlier this means when i walk up
[05:13] for some cs i'll just let them die since
[05:15] i'm anticipating that he'll try to
[05:17] contest it it's kind of tricky doing
[05:18] this in low elo since i don't know what
[05:20] they are thinking this applies to skill
[05:21] shots as well it's really hard to dodge
[05:23] the player's skill shots since it feels
[05:25] like they're just random it's 100 easier
[05:27] to dodge high level player skill shots
[05:29] world crazer walks into the brush though
[05:31] so as i walk up and clear some minions i
[05:32] wore the brush to see if he's recalling
[05:34] in it if he was i would definitely stop
[05:36] him last second since i might have a
[05:37] chance to kill him here sadly
[05:39] mordekaiser hits me with an isolated q
[05:40] here and hits level 5 then hits me with
[05:42] another isolated q to make me too low to
[05:44] fight him at this point i won't be able
[05:46] to use my item advantage to look for a
[05:47] kill but that's fine i'm not in a
[05:48] terrible spot or anything although if it
[05:50] was high yellow i could easily be dove
[05:52] i'm just going to let motocross crash
[05:53] the wave at this point but while i'm
[05:55] doing that my skarner shows up trying to
[05:56] gank so what i do next is an extremely
[05:58] important concept that many players fail
[06:00] to understand or know i can't help my
[06:02] skarner in this gank if he can kill mort
[06:05] alone that's great but the risk reward
[06:07] here isn't good for me it's way too
[06:09] risky if i try to help here and the
[06:11] enemy jungler counter ganks we lose the
[06:12] 2v2 since i'm level 4 and have half
[06:14] health i would die and lose all these
[06:16] minions and my lane would be unplayable
[06:18] on top of this if i help skarner here
[06:20] and chase the mordekaiser i'll still
[06:22] lose all these minions to the tower so i
[06:23] won't even be gaining that much if we
[06:25] kill him especially if i get the assist
[06:26] and not the kill then it actually
[06:28] wouldn't have been worth it for these
[06:29] reasons i don't help skarner and i just
[06:31] focus on the wave notice what i do with
[06:33] it though i don't just let it crash i
[06:34] use my e to tank it and avoid letting
[06:36] the wave crash on the tower this is
[06:38] because i want to freeze and if skarner
[06:39] kills mord or even chunks him hard
[06:41] enough to make him recall mord would be
[06:42] forced to tp back to lane because of the
[06:44] freeze but when i noticed that skarner
[06:46] backed off early and didn't really chunk
[06:47] mordekaiser i just let the wave crash so
[06:50] i'll be honest here this mordekaiser has
[06:51] played pretty well so far he's exceeded
[06:53] my expectations this is where he starts
[06:55] to slip up though because he's missing
[06:56] some important fundamental concepts it
[06:58] only takes one remember as i'm clearing
[07:00] this wave i noticed my low health makes
[07:02] the mordekaiser stay in lane and he's
[07:03] sitting in the brush he might have
[07:05] forgotten that i ordered it earlier but
[07:07] this is a huge mistake from him since he
[07:08] could get a big advantage from just
[07:10] recalling after the skarner gang just
[07:12] like we talked about earlier with what i
[07:13] did to him in the first three levels the
[07:15] wave will slow push back to him so he
[07:16] could walk back to lane and i'm so low
[07:18] that i would be forced to recall and use
[07:19] tp since the wave would be frozen i
[07:22] wouldn't be able to crash the wave on
[07:23] his tower before he got back then he
[07:24] would have the tp advantage to punish
[07:27] this i'm going to act like i'm recalling
[07:28] to bait him out of the brush before we
[07:30] see what happens let's say neither of us
[07:31] touch the wave from this point will the
[07:33] push to him push to me or stay where it
[07:36] is
[07:41] because the even minion rule meaning
[07:42] when the waves are even it will push the
[07:44] opposite way it's slow pushing to him so
[07:46] i don't stop my recall to bait him into
[07:48] using an aoe ability on the wave either
[07:50] his q or his e now the wave is pushing
[07:52] to me and look at where my next wave is
[07:54] it's close enough that the mordekaiser
[07:55] won't be able to crash the current wave
[07:57] before my next one gets here so i start
[07:59] channeling my recall i buy a sheen which
[08:01] is a big power spike for jax and tipped
[08:02] me back to lane right away while
[08:04] mordekaiser is trying to clear the
[08:05] cannon wave last time i only had a long
[08:07] sword advantage on him this time though
[08:09] i had the long sword plus an entire
[08:11] sheen mordekaiser is overstated as
[08:12] welcome a bit too long now so when i tp
[08:15] in i gladly take the fight even though
[08:17] he's level 6 and i'm level 5. my item
[08:19] advantage is too big especially when
[08:21] he's missing this much health already so
[08:23] i get the kill like i said it only takes
[08:25] one piece of game knowledge that you
[08:26] could be missing that your opponent can
[08:27] use against you like this
