I Spent a Day Training with Real Japanese Sumo Wrestlers
AI Summary
Sumo, Japan's ancient sport, is often misunderstood as a simple hugging contest, but it is a complex, sacred, and iconic sport. This video explores the daily life, intense training, and culture of sumo wrestlers, including firsthand experience and interviews.
Sumo is often seen as a hugging contest between fat men in diapers, but it is actually a complex, sacred, and iconic sport.
Sumo dates back to ancient Japan, used in agricultural ceremonies. Earliest records from Nara period, later regulated in Edo period by Tokugawa shogunate.
Training starts early with lower-ranked wrestlers preparing the ring (dohyo) by spreading dirt evenly. The same dirt is reused as the ring is sacred.
Shiko is a fundamental exercise: lifting one leg to 90 degrees, then lowering into a squat. It strengthens lower body and balance. Wrestlers do 200 reps as warm-up.
Tsubayashi (sliding feet) involves squatting and sliding feet on ground to improve lower body and stability.
Wrestlers pair up and push each other out of the ring repeatedly until exhaustion, focusing on form to avoid injury.
Sparring matches are explosive and instantaneous, combining all training into split-second decisions.
Yorikiri (frontal force-out) is the most common winning technique. Rare techniques include tsukidashi (thrust out) and others rarely seen.
Forbidden techniques include hair-pulling, punching, kicking above the mawashi, eye-gouging, and grabbing the front of the mawashi. Accidental face-slapping can occur.
Before a match, wrestlers throw salt to purify the ring and prevent injury. After winning, they receive prize money with a specific bowing ritual.
Typical training: morning warm-up (shiko 200 times), footwork, actual sumo sparring, butsukari-geiko (pushing drill), then cool-down. Training volume varies by stable.
After morning training, wrestlers have free time. Many sleep, do weight training, or spend time with family. The intense training leads to exhaustion.
Butsukari (pushing drill) is the hardest part, done after sparring when already tired. It never gets easier.
Wrestlers need both muscle and weight. Balancing muscle gain with fat is challenging; some eat extra meals to gain weight.
Strong wrestlers (Yokozuna, Ozeki) have good skin luster and muscle definition, indicating quality diet and training.
Sumo is a demanding sport requiring immense strength, balance, and dedication. The training is brutal, but the culture and rituals make it a unique and respected tradition.

Download .txt[00:00] Sumo. This ancient and revered sport of Japan has captivated audiences all across the world for centuries, with its grandiose rituals, rich history, and explosive battles that test only the most dedicated and elite athletes.
[00:14] Although to a lot of people it may just seem on the surface to be a hugging contest between fat men in diapers, but in actuality, it is a complex, sacred, and iconic sport where every match tells a story of strength, heritage, and honor.
[00:30] I remember from a young age, sitting at my grandparents' place in front of the TV, watching sumo matches for hours on end, and just being absolutely captivated by the sheer intensity of it all. And finally, as an adult, going to places like the Duel Goku Kokushika or the Duel Goku Sumo Hall
[00:47] and seeing a live match in person really changed the perspective on how the sport is played. But I've always been curious as to what the daily life of a sumo wrestler is actually like. What kind of intense training goes into the sport?
[01:01] What kind of lifestyle do they go through day to day? And what does it really take to become a professional sumo wrestler? Let's find out. Sumo dates back to ancient times in Japan,
[01:18] where it was believed that sumo-like rituals were used during agricultural ceremonies to ensure good harvests and ward off evil spirits. The earliest documented records of sumo go back to the Nara period,
[01:30] where it was used more for entertainment purposes during festivals and ceremonies. Some 1,000 years later in the Edo period, the Tokugawa shogunate officially started regulating the sport, to establishing organized tournaments and creating ranking systems we see today.
[01:43] But has the sport and culture surrounding it changed over those years? Let's find out. But before we jump into the world of Sumo, let me tell you about today's sponsor, Hulk-Eyed Star Rail. Built to you by Toyoverse, the creators of Genshin Impact comes with multi-platform space fantasy RPGs
[01:59] that's accumulated over 100 million downloads and won several game awards. And now for current players, there's a brand new stop for the Astro Express, Amphorius, the Eternal Land. Amphorius draws inspiration from the mythological era
[02:12] of the Mediterranean civilization filled with grandeur and epic-scaled landscapes. Part of the game has access to the brand-new ice-type character, the Herta. Look at her. A beautiful and mysterious, yet highly confident
[02:25] and slightly arrogant genius sorceress, she resides in the Cloth Tower at the galaxy's edge. You can also get access to the new five-star lightning-type character, Aglael. The permanent 5-star character selection event will last until version 3.2, and if players
[02:39] haven't previously redeemed the reward, they can still choose one 5-star character from the permanent pool, so don't miss your chance to log in and claim them. Plus, if you log in for 7 days, you can get 10 Star Rail special passes for free to try
[02:54] and pull the new characters. Plus, you can redeem the code on screen right now to get yourself 50 Stellar J's. You're welcome. So really, what are you waiting for? Try Honkai Star Rail now by clicking the link in the description below. doing so it helps the channel out a lot.
[03:06] A big thank you to Honka Starra for sponsoring today's video. Now let's get back to Joey. Doing sumo things as sumo wrestlers do. You probably know what's
[03:18] happening. I'll play this with you. I'm Shuma-Mami. I'm Shuma-Mami. I'm Shuma-Mami. I'm Shuma-Mami. First of all, I want to ask what I want to say is to become a sumo-san,
[03:31] to become a strength, your planning on уч施設? My year in university was wäre after school, and when your bosseration
[03:54] first came up to town So when you talk about sports next arriv, 50 feet are problems. I have – what?
[04:06] Right into those days, you can count more than how much you carry all of this women in your life. But now those groups are muy
[04:19] They come from 163cm and · 65. So that's more than that, but most other people that have a big record today. So I worked with how many other women speak, but obviously I did it.
[04:36] Did you say that everyone visited the support come out of the summer or on your knees?
[04:51] He used the견 to give a 10-year-old Mittelman.
[05:04] He sold his wife. We have a list of three types of hests and guns.
[05:16] Yeah? Oh, well, you got adar. How many are the Scouts and Scouts? How? I think it was a Scouts. I wanted to enter the room in the Yokozuna.
[05:31] But now, I want to enter the Scouts and the name of the Scouts. I want to enter the Scouts and the Chiyama-san. I'm still in the Scouts.
[05:45] As amazing as it is to finally be able to sit down and talk to these sumo wrestlers, what was more mesmerizing was seeing these athletes do their daily training up close and personally. Training would start super early in the morning,
[05:58] with the lower-ranked wrestlers being responsible for preparing the ring, or for sure, by spreading a mound of dirt evenly around it with a broom. It's a tradition in sumo that the same dirt is used over and over again,
[06:10] as the ring is considered a sacred place for these athletes. Their warm-up started out with some simple stretches to really get the body loose and ready for the start of the training, which involves a move called squat.
[06:22] This is a fundamental sumo exercise that involves lifting one leg up, holding it at the top at a 90 degree angle, and then slowly lowering it into a squat. The name translates to four legs in Japanese, referring to the use of all four quadricep muscles.
[06:37] Not only does this aid in improving strength in the lower body, but also improves on overall balance. two key factors that make or break a swimmer match. They would continue to do the Shikō a mind-numbing 200 times, and that was just a warm up.
[06:54] Next up is a move called Tsubayashi, or Sliding Feet, a training exercise that involves squatting and sliding your feet while keeping them on the ground. This is also used to accentuate the lower body and to help the wrestlers stay firmly planted on the ground.
[07:08] A very important skill to master considering the sheer power and weight that they have to go up against in the matches. And in case it wasn't already clear from the footage you're seeing, this training regimen is extremely tiring. I mean, just look at how much sweat they're able to generate from
[07:23] these two warm-up exercises alone. After this, they sweep up and flatten the dirt again and prepare the ring for a team exercise. This one involves getting a partner or similar rank and pushing them out of the ring as fast and as efficiently as possible Although it sounds simple what makes it absolutely brutal is the fact that they have to do this over and over and over again pushing themselves to the
[07:46] absolute blink of exhaustion until they're practically covered in dirt. Imagine having to continuously push a 100 to 200 kilogram weight that's actively trying to fight back for over 30
[07:59] minutes. That's what these athletes have to do every single day. And it's not only about strength, but also proper form, having to retry over and over again until their form is correct to avoid possible injuries.
[08:12] The wrestlers exert so much explosive force that they can't help but swing to coach their already worn out muscles to push even further, eventually reaching their breaking point. Even when they're down on the ground, exhausted,
[08:25] the rest of the team is still yelling at them to get up and continue. It's a brutal sight, yet you can't help but admire the sheer dedication that goes into trying to become the greatest at this sport,
[08:37] something that I can't even adhere to imagine doing myself. No training session would be complete without a sparring match, though, and that's exactly what we got to see. Sumo matches are truly instantaneous, with athletes having to combine everything they train for in a split second,
[08:52] and seeing these explosive sparring matches up close is truly an intense experience, to say the least. But of course, I couldn't just sit here and take all of this in as a spectator. I came here to put myself through exactly what they're doing to better understand this sport.
[09:08] So, that's exactly what I was going to do. Alright, well, it's time for me to experience it myself. I'm going to get destroyed. Do you see the size of those guys?
[09:20] I'm almost looking tweaking here. Let's see how much my six months of prostate training will do. Probably nothing. Okay, so unfortunately I'm not going to be able to wear it as is, because obviously I'm not a sniffer wrestler of any kind, but I at least get through the experiences.
[09:39] So I'm going to wear some pants underneath, just so they can cover up my cheeks and stuff like that, and then I'll be wearing it on top. I've never worn a mawashi before, so this is going to be interesting and scary. I'm really scared. I'm not going to lie. Let's go.
[09:54] After getting a little helping hand to put my mawashi on, I was finally ready to begin my training. And let's just say it was going to be way, way harder than I ever anticipated.
[10:24] Fourth thing
[10:48] The King Detective of ahead giving meosh Exxon all the resources there's five Quemis

[12:08] I'm not sure if you're a fan of the team, but I'm not sure if you're a fan of the team. I'm not sure if you're a fan of the team.
[12:21] But the first thing is the level of the team. What are you talking about?
[12:33] The first thing is, the most famous one is the Yokozuna, the Oseki, the Sekiwake, and the Maku-nouji-diki. The other thing is that you can see on TV.
[12:46] The other thing is the Maku-nouji-diki. The other thing is the Maku-nouji-diki. The Maku-nouji-diki is the Maku-nouji-diki. The first thing is the Maku-nouji-diki.
[13:00] So I'm going to start with the next step. There are quite a few things. Yes, I'm going to start with the front. I'm going to start with the first step.
[13:12] The first step is from the beginning. There are 4 classes. What are you two? I'm going to start with the third step. The third step is 3, and the third step is 4.

[15:13] my research is still We also recreate the Wayasis cause only to prepare hard space violence Squadron
