Lanterns Episode 6 Trailer Breakdown — Full Breakdown & Transcript

[00:00] The trailer for Lanterns Episode 6 finally brings us back to the 2026 timeline as John starts his investigation into Hal's death. Welcome back, Screen Crush. I'm Ryan Aries. In the teaser trailer for this new episode, we are back in the present day, seemingly for the whole episode,

[00:14] which is very similar to the format of True Detective, which this show has often been compared to. From this teaser, it looks like we'll be picking up right from the end of Episode 1. But I do hope we get just a little insight into John's green lanternless life for the last decade,

[00:29] Especially considering that we know Guy Gardner is finally making his appearance. That's true. They have been teaming up Guy's appearance for a while now. He was in the first couple of trailers they released for the series and was said to have Hal's ring at the end of the pilot.

[00:42] Guy has the ring. And we know that Guy is the acting Green Lantern during Superman, which takes place a year before this episode in 2025. So, on top of the Rushville mystery in the beginning half of the series, we were also questioning, how did Guy have a ring?

[00:56] In past videos, we've posed a couple of theories about how he may have gotten the ring. In the comics, Guy was the second, first-ish pick for Green Lantern. When Avanthor crashed down, both Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner were picked for the ring, but Hal was closer, so he was chosen.

[01:10] However, we know this isn't the case in the DCU. While we've not heard much about Guy's past on screen, James Gunn did reveal a huge comic divergence on the Peacemaker podcast. Where is your Green Lantern from? Cincinnati.

[01:22] In the comics, Guy is from Baltimore, Maryland, where he was also working as a gym teacher at the time of the crash. And we know that here, as well as in the comics, Hal is from Coast City. And while Coast City is fictional, its real-life location is around Sausalito, California.

[01:36] However, with Guy now from Cincinnati, Ohio, he's actually 2,000 miles closer than Hal would have been. So it seems like they're not going for the closest proximity origin for Guy Gardner. Now there is another way that he gets the ring in the comics as well,

[01:49] which I think will be similar to what they'll go with here. During Crisis on Infinite Earth, which was a huge multiversal event that rewrote the DC timeline, the Guardians needed to appoint another Green Lantern after Hal quit. John was currently working as the active Green Lantern for Earth, but he needed a backup in case he got injured.

[02:05] And that is where Guy comes back in. After waking up from his coma, right? Long story, after he wakes up from his coma, albeit slightly brain damaged, Guy goes off in search of the ring. The Guardians end up reaching out to him and giving him his own ring, which I think we'll see happen here.

[02:19] At the end of the last episode, we saw John turn down the ring. Brown doesn't even remember why he wanted to death pay. And neither do I. So, as of 2016, there's no Green Lantern controlling Sector 2814.

[02:31] And while the ring usually seeks out the wearer, it's been established that the Guardians are no longer using that method anymore. Green Lanterns are chosen by rings. So why suddenly are you interviewing people for the job? So, I imagine that after John gives back the ring, a first for the Guardians,

[02:46] they would just restart their interview process. process. Which brings me back to a line the Guardian said in Episode 3. Many of the candidates considered for the role of Green Lantern. In that breakdown, we noted the Guardian's use of many to describe

[02:58] the number of candidates. So, we know at least one other person, aside from John Stewart Sr. and Hal Jordan, was a candidate for the ring in 1986. Maybe that other person was Guy Gardner Nathan Fillion is only five years younger than Kyle Chandler so they could have been deemed worthy around the same time just like in the comics Granted Hal was only about 24 when he got the ring

[03:18] so Guy would have been like 19, but a teen lantern isn't totally unheard of. In the comics, there are several teen green lanterns, like Kelly Quintella, Kai Rowe, and Ty Femme. Maybe within the decade after the Rushville battle,

He wasn't checking to take the ring, he was making sure the Guardians didn't walk back everything they had said and return the ring to Hal.

[05:23] But that also makes me wonder, does this mean that Hal went 10 years without the ring? I don't know. Well, if John gave Leon the reign back in 2016, it's fair to assume that they chose Guy not too soon after.

[05:35] And that would sort of fit in with the comics. I mean, during the crisis event, Hal wanted to rejoin the Corps to help out, but he was denied because he had quit. And the Guardians then chose Guy. The same thing could be the case here, with the Guardians forever turning their back on Hal in favor of Guy Gardner.

[05:51] And to be fair, Guy may be an asshole, but he is very committed to the oath. You are exactly the kind of alien threat I was commandeered by the Green Lantern Corps to protect this planet again. But enough about Guy. Let's focus on what looks to be the big mystery of this episode.

[06:05] Hal Jordan's death. The teaser already sets up two clues about his death. Whoever broke his nail was probably killed. And still finds him fighting back. For sure, he was looking on the shit on. And I be honest At first a Hal Jordan that doesn fight back doesn sound very much like the Lantern at all Or maybe it does We touched on this in the breakdown but Hal been known to let his emotions take hold of him sometimes especially the emotions of grief and guilt During both the Emerald Twilight

[06:30] arc and the Zero Crisis arc, we saw a Hal Jordan who was so consumed with his actions, or lack thereof, that he became a villain. Last episode we saw Hal absolutely defeated Hal Jordan. Even when

[06:42] pinned down in the rubble, Hal refused to stop fighting to keep the ring. That ring is everything to him. He has nothing else. No family, no loved ones, nothing. And now, he's lost the one thing that gave him a purpose. This is a

[06:54] Hal Jordan who has presumably spent the last decade grieving over his former position. Not because he really cared for it, but because now, he really is alone. Despite him saying that he never even

[07:06] talked to the other core members, he was still part of something. Now, however, he really has nothing and no one left. So everyone that's ever called him has been proven right. So, when Carrie says,

[07:18] That totally makes sense for this purposeless version of Hal. He feels like he has nothing tying him back to Earth because he never had anything in the first place. In the comics, he never really stays on Earth long enough to foster relationships with people that he cares about.

[07:33] So, I imagine that Hal was the same way here, and we even have confirmation of that. But now, Hal isn't able to fly off when things get too real, so he has to find something to ground him, like Carrie.

[07:45] it's clear that there is something between the two. And though Hal might be pushing it a little harder, Carrie definitely likes him back in some capacity,

[07:58] which makes her next line even sadder. Again, Hal is inherently very lonely. Though he may argue against that, he is by definition alone, unless you count Earl. Of course you gotta count Earl. Of course.

[08:11] Now regardless, it's clear that Hal was deep in self-exile by the time of his death, and that Carrie may have been the only person he could count on during his remaining decade. Since this picks up right from that ending, John is in the same turtleneck fit that we saw in that episode,

[08:25] which is inspired by his appearance in the DC animated universe. He also has his goatee, which we've seen both in the comics and the animated series. Now, in town, we see John light up this Green Lantern-fashioned Bat-Signal ripoff. A couple of things about this.

[08:38] We have seen Green Lantern do this in the comics before, but it was actually a construct. He was actually using it to call Batman himself. And secondly, this once again confirms the freaking man is in the DCU. This show has been planting the seeds for Batman since the first episode, and it makes sense.

[08:52] This is the project right before they officially introduced Gotham. So, the name drops we've been hearing all season are setting us up directly for Clayface. But the fact that there's a full-fledged Bat-Signal parody by 2026 means that Batman and his signal are well-known,

[09:07] and that actually checks out with what we know timeline-wise. In Creeper Commandos, it was revealed that Dr. Fossworth was taken in by Batman around 2021. And that seemed like a pretty experienced Batman by the looks of it. If you can hear something.

[09:19] So that means that there's been at least five years of confirmed Batman activity in the DCU so far. But even so, that makes me wonder, who installed this? After all, the second John turns it on, you hear Billy say, Supreme Commander, welcome here.

[09:31] So it clear the town doesn want it We even see trash graffiti on the side of it emphasizing this It also interesting that it Billy who is saying this In the first episode we saw how he treated lanterns with deference

[09:45] But now, niceties are out the window. These guys destroyed his hometown. We saw how the Macon estate was still in ruins by 2026. So, not for nothing, Billy's anger is completely justified. Something this series

[09:57] does so well is to allow you to empathize with nearly every character regardless of their position as a hero or a villain. While Billy may be on the opposing side, his perspective is understandable. For the better half of his life,

[10:09] he lived as a lawyer and a bar owner in a peaceful town. And, in a matter of days, that was taken from him. For him, the Green Lantern symbol has been tainted. It is no longer a symbol of protection, and now it's one of destruction and loss.

[10:22] And then, John fights back against Billy and his crew, a very Hal Jordan-coded response from him. Now, the last clip in this trailer is of Guy and John, which we mentioned at the top. But two more things to note from that scene. John is behind bars, and it seems like he and Guy are already acquainted.

[10:37] That's good. Yeah, what's up? I imagine John is in prison because of the fight in the previous scene. After all, he is fighting the sheriff's husband. Or maybe ex-husband. If Hal came back for Carrie, it is possible that she and Billy split in the aftermath of Rushville.

[10:51] I mean, Billy is dead, so there's no one that Carrie's in debt to in the Macon family anymore. And if you look closely at her hand during the ending of episode one, doesn't look like she wears her wedding ring, which we had a heavy focus on in episode 4.

[11:03] That being said, it would make even more sense for Billy to be the one laughing out at John. We already know that most people pair John and Hal together anyway. So, Billy's resentment at Hal could also be seeping into his feelings for John as well.

[11:18] And, as for John and Guy being buddy-buddy, it makes me wonder if they've met before. I don't think that the Guardians would have reached out to John to let them know about Guy. They are very quick to turn their backs on their mistakes. Even we make mistakes.

[11:31] All we can do is correct them. So I doubt they think anything of John's input. It's possible that John reached out to Guy up his own accord. And we saw in Superman how televised the superhero world is, especially surrounding the Justice Gang.

[11:43] So it's possible that John saw Guy on TV and then met with the Lantern who took his place. But that's just another awesome part of this universe. The way they've been world building the DCU so far has been fantastic. They've left all these possibilities open-ended and let different creatives fill in the blanks to fit the story that they are telling without changing the narrative at large.

[12:02] After that huge action finale last episode, I can't wait to see what this show has left in store. We are past the midpoint of this series, and yet, so many different mysteries are still unfolding all at once. I'm so excited to see how they wrap everything up, especially John's storyline, considering that he'll be our main Green Lantern come Man of Tomorrow.
