My Recent Behavior Was Unacceptable. Please Forgive Me as I Try to Find Myself (and Hoopties) Again!

[00:01] And I'm a little emotional because my dumbest creation ever is back home after 7 years. >> [music]

[00:46] report that what I was doing 10 years ago isn't that different than what I'm doing today. I've pivoted back away from super cars, expensive things, and back into hoopdies, and it's been so rewarding. And this Prius is one of my

[00:59] original greatest hits. I bought it around 8 years ago for I think $1,500, the bad hybrid battery, and transformed it into this. And today we're going to take stock on how it's been after I haven't seen it for 6 or 7 years. We're

[01:11] well, including cars I think I'm going to sell in the near future, and then inspect my Prius after not seeing him sell for many years, and pick up another hybrid, a really hoopdy one that is very, very different from this. So,

[01:26] let's get started with this Prius. I bought it and it was only $1,500 originally in black, a little over 100,000 miles, and the hybrid battery had completely failed. This would have been $5,000 at the Toyota dealer to have

[01:38] at the dealer auction, but I bought it and fixed it actually mostly myself by purchasing a set of used, balanced out cells and rebuilding the battery pack, and I think it's been fine ever since. Unfortunately, and fortunately for this

[01:52] car, I did take a big pivot and make it into this Fast and Furious Prius, and went kind of crazy with this paint job. But not only that, the interior I went plaid. At first I wasn't thinking Fast and Furious and did this crazy interior,

[02:05] but then I thought if I'm repainting it, why not make it into an icon. So not only did I do that, I also lowered the suspension, custom wheels, Michelin this thing, but they are going on 8 years old now with some dry rotting. So

[02:19] because I'm an idiot, I couldn't just do a wrap. And the graphics and the visual modifications with the giant wing which we never thought would hold up this long, but somehow it has. It's it's a

[02:33] but it's still on there. That's a miracle. But we also decided that this Prius, much like the Fast and Furious car, needed nitrous. And I took this thing through the car wash and clearly this rear hatch leaks big time right

[02:49] here in the glass. Anyway, here is the nitrous bottle which I did hook up to the engine and it led to one of the dumbest moments ever on this channel. What you need? I need some nitrous. You need some nitrous? It better not leak.

[03:09] And button. Woah. four cylinder engine exploded instantly and that's because the traction control

[03:21] kicked in, killed the power, but there was still nitrous going in and it was a horrible horrible explosion. The funny thing though is that engine that I swapped in at the car wizards also blew later and it was replaced. So this four

[03:33] painted valve cover is actually its third engine in this Prius, which has of Priuses. This one was never junked, it was always saved. In addition, and this is pretty funny. I didn't do this, but a fart can was added to the exhaust,

[03:48] which is pretty hilarious. But also this car had some fun out in California. I sold it to Daily Driven Exotics, and they actually took it to all the scenes of Fast and Furious in Los Angeles with a couple of the actors, including Hector

[04:01] who signed the dash, and I think Jesse as well. And, after they had their fun, friends who sold it to another YouTuber, Mr. Lucci, who owned it for all of these years. It is just such a goofy and ridiculous thing, and it came back to me

[04:14] actually working at Barrett-Jackson doing the live TV coverage, and one of me and said, "Hey, there's somebody wanting to sell us your old Prius. Is it said, "Well, if it has the plaid seats, then it's definitely mine." Because,

[04:28] and Furious Priuses. I think I was the first, and it was. And, I told him, "Buy big thanks to Give Me the Vin and John Clay Wolfe for making this happen. And, look at this goofy, goofy Prius. I put this nitrous sticker on there. I have

[04:42] daughter was so little when we went to the store and bought nitrous for this >> I can't believe this car's here. And, I think The Car Wizard is going to freak But, first, let me give you a Hooptie Fleet update. I'm going to turn 40 this

[06:49] the cars that I have and the hoopdies that I've amassed and one of them is car. So, we'll go down the row, I guess starting with the AMG GTS to keep things kind of orderly. Compared to the SLR and the SLS that I had before this that were

[07:02] two or $300,000 cars, this thing is just as fun, it's exotic looking and now it's So, very happy with this thing for around, you know, $60,000 all in. One of with one exception, obviously, and that is my 300SL Gullwing. Now, next to it is

[07:19] the Fast and Furious machine right here, the Ford Lightning, which Hey, cat. No. No. Hey, Neelix. Next to it, another Fast and Furious car, this one much closer to the real deal than the Prius, but this

[07:33] it, a Ford Lightning pickup truck, 5.4 L supercharged. Love this thing. Glad I because I do enjoy this very much. Well, I'm not sure I could justify current probably mid-20s, low-30s in this condition, which it is tempting to sell

[07:48] replace it and I do really enjoy this thing. Unlike the Land Rover, which is still leaking, it has an oil cooler leak fixed, and then this P38 is probably going to be sold off. Very nice

[08:00] Barrett-Jackson for a little over $3,000, spent a couple of grand sorting it all out, and probably spend a little bit more sorting it out completely, and for someone, just not something I drive all that much. Unlike my holy grail

[08:14] love sneaking out every chance I can get. 16,000 original miles on the truck version, white diamond tri-coat, white diamond tri-coat, 22-in wheels. This one not going anywhere, nor is April's Grand National collection going anywhere, even

[08:29] though she has three at this point, the Grand National, the El Camino Grand Camino National, whatever it is, and the GNX that is down in Florida at the show right now. So, these aren't going anywhere along with my van. It's nice to

[08:41] have one reliable modern vehicle, and this one just turning over 10,000 mi on it. A one-ton chassis with a 6.6 L V8, so a great family cross-country trip car, along with a great tow vehicle. So, that one's sticking around, along with

[08:54] devalued the thing quite a bit with some riptide blue. But, next to it is the '23 Packard, and this one is probably going to go soon. It is running and driving. kind of old car stuff that people are used to, so I probably will be selling

[09:09] garage, another Escalade, the first year 1999 Cadillac Escalade. It did great this winter for me. 90,000 mi on it, and a lifelong California truck. One winter to corrode already because it's lost its finish. So, I desperately need to find

[09:25] because otherwise, it is in really nice condition inside and out, and it is pretty fun to drive an old body style first generation Cadillac Escalade. So, is pretty as just so goofy. The XLRV, something

[09:39] was a salesman when these were new back in 2007. And this one, $100,000 when Northstar. And now I bought this one for too, as the one we had in the showroom floor that we couldn't sell for almost

[09:53] $100,000. The dealership owner gave up and shipped it back home. And back then, I was driving this car to work, my first car, 1985 Mercedes 500SL that I still have. It's definitely not going anywhere. And I trust the CarTrek SLK to

[10:06] sit above it now because it's been fixed. Turns out to Varish, he left a did the conductor plate for me in the last CarTrek, which this was my CarTrek car. He pimped it for me to make it an SLR, the most valuable car in the world.

[10:19] started dumping transmission fluid when I got home all over the cars cuz it was up on the rack. So, a quick seal, that fixed it. With his glorious SLR intake codpiece there on the front, very happy to rest after its very long and abused

[10:33] life and a very abused CarTrek. So, next to it, the Aston Martin Vanquish, which is also a CarTrek vehicle from CarTrek 2. Ed Bolian owned it first, then to Varish, who sold it to me. And I've had it for, I think, 4 years now, quite a

[10:46] while. I do really enjoy driving that car. Not going anywhere. The Breaking because it started leaking power chopping block as well. It's definitely going to go. The Hellcat, unfortunately,

[10:59] That's going to get fixed. And then I want to drive the car. Not going only $26,000 and it's had a lot of problems, unfortunately. And I really haven't been able to enjoy it. But, the spec is something that I've wanted ever

[11:13] black hood, six-speed manual. And the other problem, the wide body kit, it wheels, but the fake kit, it's not holding up well. It pops and peels in back on when it pops. So, these aftermarket kits, they're just total

[11:28] junk, unfortunately. Speaking of junk, Apollo 911, very happy car to see its old friend here again. I think back in 2017, these would have been stablemates with a Corvette LS3 in the back. The Bentley Continental GT, I normally

[11:40] wouldn't sell, but I found its replacement. Basically, the next level because it has needs, and this one is totally sorted out. It's been so reliable car to go into another car that's junk and needs sorted out. So,

[11:55] benefit from that. And the Maybach 62, kind of a shocker, but I think after 4 years, I'm ready to let this one go. I've sort of had my fun. It's the rare partition car, the long wheelbase, so cool, but I haven't driven it much in

[12:08] the last year. And when they sit, I feel like it is time for it to go. Next to it, another old-school luxury car, the 1946 Chrysler. And this one I do enjoy out of winter now, so it hasn't moved that much, but a real woody wood

[12:23] paneling here, convertible. And these have taken a bath value-wise in recent would have been a six-figure or multiple six-figure car, highly restored. But antique cars that aren't really sports cars like the Gullwing because obviously

[12:36] the generation that was into these things are literally dying out, and this isn't really an icon that's fun to drive like a Gullwing or an E-Type Jag, that I love it, but I get why it's definitely depreciating. Above it, the Lincoln Town

[12:49] this thing down and start driving it. Silver Rosé metallic with a red velvet luxurious. Above it, the Jurassic Park Jeep, another car trek veteran that I've had for 8 years now, and it's not a real Jurassic Park Jeep, rather a tribute,

[13:04] but I've had so long, it's one of the three along with Apollo and the 500SL that would have remembered the Fast and Furious Prius, which I I am so giddy to have this car back. So, let's drive it up to the Car

[13:16] Wizards. Push-button start in 2005, this thing's fancy. Now showing 180,000 mi on the odometer, so it was driven quite a bit. I did not add that super sticker is definitely interesting, but I don't think the check engine light is on

[13:32] there's the rumble of that engine with the fart can on the back. Uh just didn't think of that, but I guess as we go outside there are a few vehicles to check in on. The S500 kind of waiting for its turn to get fixed. Same with the

[13:46] just kind of waiting for its cosmetic clean up. There's a Datsun in there horn here in the lean-to we have a few more hoopdies. This lean-to's 80 years pretty funny that it has a Lamborghini tractor in it now, a 7200, and a 240D,

[14:01] fixed. The truck hasn't moved really in 6 months, but it's kind of handy to have around. And the tractor, well, it's just decoration at this point. And then there is the Lincoln Blackwood. Believe it or not, I like it enough, and also I was

[14:14] these lowball offers, like two or three grand to buy the thing when it's only Car Wizards, and a lot cheaper at different shops that aren't specialists So, I think I'm going to have a cheaper shop fix it do the head gaskets on it,

[14:29] and then it's totally back on the road and a really nice truck. So, I think But now let's head up to the Car Wizards. Wizards. My first driving this thing in 7 years.

[14:42] and I just pulled out in front of a car because I can't accelerate fast enough. This isn't a real Supra. Come on. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. Go. We just hit 55 mph. Now, if the nitrous was still hooked up, that's what this

[14:56] it, and then this button would hit the nitrous. That's all been disabled mercifully because it's like insta-death for the engine. But it's actually still really smooth going down the road at 60 mph and 180,000 mi, even with these old

[15:10] aftermarket struts on this thing. Pretty impressive. But that's pretty much the norm for the second generation Prius. My buddy Elliott Davis has one with 230,000 mi on it, still going fine. They just way over built, way over engineered

[15:23] one of his videos as one of the top 10 modern cars that changed history and it's easy to see why. This was the first mainstream accepted Prius. It was cool for everybody to drive. The technology was very impressive for its time. Still

[15:36] is today and it actually made people want to buy and drive a hybrid. It really mainstreamed the word hybrid. For a while it was just Prius, kind of like Kleenex is to tissue. Prius was the only hybrid in the game that really mattered,

[15:49] but now of course so many cars are hybrid and many of them don't do it very well. This Prius very simple with that engine, the planetary drive CBT transmission that is unkillable. And then the battery system, which is

[16:01] definitely the weakest link, but now is easily fixable. Back 10 years ago I around a thousand dollars all balanced out. Now I think you can buy them for dollars and do it yourself in a couple hours and I'm a complete idiot and I was

[16:14] a car that was built to last forever as you check the oil because oil consumption does start happening as these engines get older and if you're not keeping up with it because there's

[16:26] engine, it can kill them and that's why I think a lot of them die unfortunately. So we'll see if the Car Wizard agrees and if this Prius is holding up as well as I think it is. I am so happy right now. You guys have no idea. It's like

[16:42] finding a long lost friend and bringing him back home. It's him back home. It's It's amazing.

[22:07] are happy. That strut's not blown. catalytic converters get stolen left and right, so It looks like they had to bypass the cat with this little adapter

[22:48] high voltage lines. >> Thank god. lowering springs there. >> this. It's like a 3-in pipe on a 1-in >> glued [laughter] a bunch of weld on there cuz the Prius one so small.

[23:02] can. So normally be a big muffler here obviously. And this is an ultra low obviously. And this is an ultra low emission vehicle. Whoa! That needs to be attached better. Okay.

[23:16] this I guess from falling on the axle >> [laughter] >> It's crazy, man. aren't blown. The springs are a little crushed. Mhm.

[23:36] I really don't see anything. So this poor little Prius there's exhaust hanger and fixing my wing and she's perfect again. And some tires. That is awesome and that is sort of the

[23:50] blowing things separate thing that's totally self-induced. But what isn't a good hybrid and what isn't easy to fix is that right there. That was a quite a >> And not only did it suck but you had to do it twice because of crappy lifters,

[24:06] >> ACDelco lifters brand new out of the box were trash. Actually already threw them you were throwing those things away and throwing a little tantrum. Yeah. And all on this eight cylinder is the big failure point on these.

[24:21] And it it failed horribly. Mhm. But that's fixed along with a lot of other >> The air suspension in the back is fully rebuilt. The engine's running perfect. We had to fix module and a few things with your park gate sensor. But

[24:35] otherwise it seems to be a happy camper. All that so this thing can get 20 miles per gallon in the city instead of 15 or whatever in a battery system hybrid. The that. CVT transmission is an issue with this one. The hybrid system also an

[24:51] issue. But all that was working so it wasn't a total disaster. >> Oh, and we fixed your door over there with the door handle. Yes. Well, since I brought a hybrid up to you, I guess I should bring a hybrid

[25:03] >> The keys are in her, so No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. What? You have a bill to pay. Well, can I at least hear it run and verify that everything's I guess you can do that. Verify the goods. Cuz what makes this

[25:18] Escalade Platinum. So, it has the cool interior, the wooden lay, heated and cooled seats and cup holders, and yeah, I verified earlier, she is quiet. And now you have the hood back on and all back together, so

[25:33] definitely need to get the bill paid. Yeah. Salty. I know. It's just so funny that that thing's back. You're going to get a lot less fuel economy going home.

[25:45] Most certainly, but it's just cool to have the hoopdies back and joining other hoopdies that I have now. This SC400 is just so cool and all cleaned up, but the Nakamichi amp that was replaced, it it's all so bad. It was a used one and then I

[25:59] he rebuilds a lot of things for me. He says he won't touch those amps. It's not worth it. So, I need to find another used one or just rock it with no rear speakers, but it does sound really good, especially with the pure mood CD. It is

[26:14] uh it is booming here in the CD changer. If you have a '90s stereo, you need this. It's Oh, yeah, I remember >> You're up late at night and this infomercial comes on with these crazy

[26:27] songs that wakes you up. Mhm. That is absolutely needed in a '90s car. on this bill cuz I know it's going to be really bad. So, yeah, the Lotus Esprit, the engine is unmated, which is great. The 6.9, it's on the ground waiting for

[26:41] something, right? It just needs the hoses and some things put back together. could get this done for you and get your Lotus ready your transmission ready to >> Let's take a closer look at the 69 here. All right.

[27:23] to do the engine work. >> Mhm. Holy smokes, and the lifter set $800. Did I have to pay for both or did you get a refund from AC Delco? Those are two sets, but that comes with 16 or eight per set. Oh, okay. I I don't think

[27:37] they were installed. I don't think they're going to do anything for me. bolts, all that stuff. And then oil change, I brought in the wheels, the AC compressor for the air suspension $1,196.

[27:52] Woo, okay. Yep, and the compressor as well, 375 bucks. Grand total Oh. So, it's still $6,400 with

[28:04] credit. So, that's like that's like almost $8,000. >> Yeah. That's a That's a whole Prius. The suspension was a great deal of it, and then all the engine parts and the labor

[28:16] Yeah, it added up fast. >> That's a whole fast and furious Prius >> That's a whole fast and furious Prius there in in repairs on an Escalade with 140,000 mi on it. Holy smoke. It drives flawless now. No

[28:29] amazing. It still has the cosmetic stuff to deal with. The bumpers need painted and other things, but >> tires, too. That Yeah, that, too. The the engine problems aren't exclusive to hybrid. It's every single 6 L 6.2 with

[28:44] the active fuel management, all that stuff. All of them, and you can't buy them. That's why my generation I love the Escalade the '05s are worth more now than the 2007s, the '13s and all that stuff because they're

[28:56] just such known junk at this point and GM never bothered fixing them. They're just They're just rocking them. >> still breaking today. it. They're waiting to redesign They're kind of kicking it down the road and and

[29:09] getting hung with this kind of stuff at 100 Well, this was the second set at 140,000 mi, which is just Anyway. extremely rare and I'm nothing's going to kill my mood with the Fast and

[29:24] Furious Prius being back. So, I guess we'll head out in the Escalade. Yes. with a CVT, so it's just screaming and it won't shift. It It just doesn't

[29:39] shift do anything until you lift it. It's so weird. Just like the Prius, but really grabbing at straws in the recession trying to make this thing fuel efficient, a 6,000-lb V8 Escalade, but I guess they had some success getting 20

[29:55] mi per gallon in the city, but going down the highway, as you can see, well, it switches between V8 and four-cylinder mode with that cylinder deactivation and gets teens. So, it's the same city and a little bit less highway, I believe, on

[30:08] these things, but still definitely a luxury roller and very nice. Obviously, I have a soft spot for Escalades. So, as rare as this thing is, nobody paid $70,000 when this thing was new and brought home an Escalade Platinum Hybrid

[30:21] brought home an Escalade Platinum Hybrid home and it was just It's just so goofy drove. It's definitely similar to the Prius where the battery helps it with the engine to get that oomph off the line to save you some economy, but it's

[30:34] just so weird that it's a V8 with a green efficient electric fuel gauge in a gigantic Escalade. So, a $3,000 for the truck and then almost $8,000 fixing it, so that's $11,000 into this thing with 146,000 mi. And I'm

[30:50] going to have to spend probably $2,000 on cosmetics and tires. So, does that No. >> [laughter] >> No, not at all. Being into the teens in this thing? No. But my own financial

[31:03] stupidity kind of makes a point because this is the future. So many automakers are going for hybrid vehicles in their SUVs, in everything, and it doubles the complication of vehicles. With a hybrids, the engines are constantly
