Final Thoughts on Myst

John summarizes the game's appeal: thinky puzzles that make you feel smart.

30:48

[00:01] I'm John, this is many a true nerd, and welcome to a missed because recently I played Riven, and many people responded to that by saying, "John, it's great to kind of weird that you'd play that without playing its predecessor, the

[00:17] absolutely classic 1993 puzzle adventure game Myst." So, here we flipping go. Though, I should say that yes, just like Riven, this is actually the 2021 remaster. The one understanding is the puzzles are all basically the same. So,

[00:32] okay, I'm suspicious given once again you're supposed to be making notes in a going on. Now, this is going to be a bit on the complicated side. Oh, and also weird. Don't forget this is a franchise that appears to be about like dimensions

[00:47] hidden inside of books or whatnot. Stuff's going to be weird in this game. >> I realized the moment I fell into the fissure that the book would not be destroyed as I planned. I continued falling into that starry

[00:59] expanse of which I had only a fleeting glimpse. I've tried to speculate where it might have landed, but I must admit that such conjecture is futile. Still, questions about whose hands might

[01:12] one day hold my Myst book are unsettling to me. I know my apprehensions might never be allayed, and so I close realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written.

[01:31] >> So, speak of the devil. I found just the book Myst here inside the game Myst. So, crack her open. And I'm assuming there's going to be like a parallel dimension hidden inside the book or something like that. There we flipping go. Window to a

[01:44] parallel dimension. Thought so. And as a result of that, here we go. I'm now yes, on an island inside a book at the bottom of a ravine that can only be accessed via a fissure in space time. The bare minimum, yeah, some stuff does

[02:01] immediately make sense. Like that's a vault door over there. Get in, figure out what the vault experiment is, we'll be golden. Also, there appears to be, yes, a very sunk boat here. So, this thing's now useless for

[02:15] the time being. Yeah, basically this is a big point and click adventure. So, for example, buttons, you might want to push those.

[02:28] useful. Yes, though okay, let's just have a looksy round here before we like, you know, go anywhere. See if we're going to figure See if we're going to figure out roughly what's going on or what not. Possibly.

[02:44] Was kind of hoping that might raise the boat, but no, hang on. I don't know. Possibly nothing cuz there's no power. It's hard to bloody

[02:56] say what's going on. These games tend to be, yes, a bit on the um obtuse side and Seriously, that's a nice and big cog right there. But, I can't do anything with you. Hang on. Try again.

[03:12] Yeah, I feel like we may be needing either power or the right Oh, spare giant cogs. I like spare giant cogs, that's nice. Yes, possibly we need to that's nice. Yes, possibly we need to like restore power or something.

[03:25] So, yeah, just ambling about, there's those switches everywhere. But, right now yeah. anything. >> [music]

[03:39] >> [music] >> Little buttons, however, do. So, >> Little buttons, however, do. So, Okay. Have a A looksy here. I can change the numbers.

[03:59] Problem being, I don't know what to change them so. change them so. Yeah. So, sure. Yeah. So, sure. But, oh, hang on. Hang on.

[04:14] 5:15 in the morning. So, that's going to be a time. The problem being it right. So, I need to know a date and a time to enter into this thing to get some sort of useful information, possibly a security feeds.

[04:27] So, right. Come back to you later when we know, yeah, a time and a Oh. There are big beautiful bronze rocket ship over there. Okay, that's cocking

[04:39] gorgeous. There is a button and a lever. But, I doesn't appear to be lit up. Right. We need to get that rocket ship operational. It does appear to be a hang on a path of

[04:54] It does appear to be a hang on a path of going down in this direction. That's That's a ladder. Right, it is power. We need to be using a power. We need to keep the power flowing. Let's just uh follow the wires back to, yeah,

[05:11] the source of uh the power. That feels uh Now, that's going to be That feels uh Now, that's going to be important. So, uh right. Small building here. Yet more bloody switches. None of them

[05:24] do anything yet. So, head in here. Down into the basement. Creepy ass noises coming from the basement, I'll admit. So, okay.

[05:39] Lots of uh lights. Generators. That's what generators look like. I know cuz they look a bit like that in the Fallout 4. generators? But like, you know, that's roughly what they look like in a Fallout

[05:51] roughly what they look like in a Fallout 4. So, I'm going to assume generators. 4. So, I'm going to assume generators. Problem being Right. This here is precisely what the notebook

[06:04] is for. Cuz by going uh through the buttons one by one, I can make a note in my notebook of yeah, what power each button generates. And there we go. That's now a complete breakdown of what all the buttons do. The problem being

[06:20] yeah, just like uh that date machine, I don't currently know what, you know, current I'm supposed to be entering. Right, nothing more we can do there. So, ground. There's a nice cabin over here, so uh

[06:37] Bloody hell, it's nothing but cooking, numbers, and puzzles, and whatnot. This is just a great big complicated escape room, isn't it? Okay, bare minimum room, isn't it? Okay, bare minimum definitely rotate you.

[06:55] sure that's done anything. Currently, no PSI. Also, yeah. A tray. Yet more numbers, which I don't know anything about. So, uh hang on.

[07:09] Does that tray maybe exist somewhere on this island? Cuz yeah, I'd be looking for a hang on, a brick wall. That's too tall a brick wall. And honestly, yeah, that was like, you know, a more red brick than

[07:25] a more red brick than There's also these things, which is Obviously, that's the Emu noise-making machine, because why wouldn't there be an Emu noise-making machine? That's the Christianity noise-making machine.

[07:41] Again, obvious why that would be here. And the sounds of Canada, yep, that makes sense, too. Meanwhile, in the bigger main building, right, a library. That does feel important, yes. Let's here we go.

[07:56] There's a lovely holographic map showing me the island. Most of this does make sense. The rocket ship, the power room, that's the library I'm in right now, that's the room where I need to enter a date. That's where the

[08:10] ship was sunk, and that's the vault door. door. However, there is the Oh.

[08:22] to like, you know, turn around turn around lasers.

[08:34] that's doing something. Okay, hang on. If I point that at the rocket ship, has that done anything to the rocket ship? Not that I'm seeing. That might just be

[08:46] track down buried treasure or something. It's hard to say. Now, the question is, It's hard to say. Now, the question is, can I actually read these

[08:58] that book just like ate the page instead.

[09:20] I can't I can't see. You need a red page. You must bring

[09:32] page. >> Okay. So, you're in a world inside a world. If I bring you a red pages, that might like, you know, cheer you up a bit. Does anyone live

[09:47] inside this blue book by any chance? >> Cyrus? >> Cyrus? Cyrus?

[10:19] >> Right, these are people trapped inside books. crimes they've committed or something. But, if I want to learn more about the universe, yeah, I'm going to be needing more bloody pages to get a better signal

[10:36] to that. So, oh. to open a secret passage there, but I did, so hang on.

[10:53] access to all these books right now. That's a shame. Thank you, buddy. So, So, okay. Open a verses. Wait, hang on.

[11:08] Open a verses. Wait, hang on. Did that shut the door behind me or so can I interact with Yeah, these books here. Crack all of them open if we can. There might be a red or blue page in inside here somewhere. Or

[11:21] alternatively, yes, there's just a lot of bloody lore here. Okay, best as I can tell, this the first book is about some guy who explored these islands a long before May. Eventually, yeah, he brought over his two sons, Cyrus and Achenar so

[11:39] it writes. Some point of the book doesn't explain when or why his sons ended up trapped inside two separate books. Unfortunately, many of the other books. Unfortunately, many of the other pages are yes, worn down. Recognize the

[11:55] rocket ship but most of this is not legible. As best as I could tell, yeah. The other books meanwhile are about other islands I've not been to yet. Cuz yeah, that's a definitely not where I am right now. They do however contain some

[12:10] useful bits of information and I checked and confirmed me of those symbols I saw. They refer to constellations. Still, I think we've got all we can out of those books for the time being at least. So, uh hang on.

[12:24] Crack open that panel and there we go. I'm trapped in a chair. I have also got a key. Okay. Small weird brick room uh

[12:39] Small weird brick room uh here. Not sure what that's for but keep on keeping on. Got a lovely sexy elevator. Just take that up and or down. Oh, sorry. Need to close the door first.

[12:55] Oh, sorry. Need to close the door first. That's fair. So right, that brings me to That's fair. So right, that brings me to the tower. And uh hello sexy. A key with a whole bunch of uh times and

[13:08] with a whole bunch of uh times and dates. Now, this this is what we bloody needed. So right, make a record all of that together with book. Climb ladder.

[13:22] Head up to the top here. Hang on. What's the reason for top here. Hang on. What's the reason for this? supposed to look out onto the ship, though I'm not sure how that helps me.

[13:38] A jar, things now starting to make a more sense of for a given definition of more sense of for a given definition of sense. So, okay, this now matches something in the library. Give it a go and

[13:53] Did I just get the date wrong or something? No, I didn't. So, okay, what did that do? Oh, hang on. Hang on and hang on and hang on. I think I may have just realized what's going on

[14:06] with this here time machine. That's a constellation that corresponds to, yeah, constellation that corresponds to, yeah, one, that book, and two, the buttons around the fountain. Right, now I know what I'm looking for.

[14:20] That first one, October 11th, yeah, just get you running again. Take a photo and then, yeah, enter the last set of data, which was in November last set of data, which was in November 23rd and 97 and 91, just before 7:00

[14:35] p.m. in the evening. Just remember to, yeah, make sure it's 6:57 yeah, make sure it's 6:57 p.m., not a.m. Okay, now we're talking, we're getting somewhere cuz I now know we need to find, yeah, matches for these

[14:52] constellations. Though two of them seem to be, uh, hang on. A you two a match. I mean, you look like you match to me. But here we go, a pentagon with two dots on the bottom

[15:06] left. That's Canada. Then the other one is, right, three at top, two at the side, then two single dots. And that's the snake, spot on. So, if I've got this

[15:19] right, hang on, I I be looking for leaf leaf snake. leaf snake. So, I'm pretty sure yeah, one of you was Yep, there we go. There's a leaf. There's snake.

[15:35] There's snake. And then a I feel like I must have made a mistake here in some capacity. here in some capacity. But I know that it's at least yeah,

[15:48] one snake and one leaf. So, Right, at that point we could just BRUTE Right, at that point we could just BRUTE FORCE THIS. OH, there we flipping go. It FORCE THIS. OH, there we flipping go. It was supposed to be the bug.

[16:04] also is that That's brought the boat back into play. That's brought the boat back into play. Okay, so I've raised the boat up. That's Also, seriously, how did I mess up the flipping constellation puzzle? Cuz the

[16:19] bug's supposed to be like that, but somehow, yeah, I had like two separate ones you the same thing. So, I must have entered some data incorrectly. Let's just put this down to

[16:34] my perception, but also congratulate me for figuring out that having got two of the three, yes, brute forcing it to that point would be quite possible. So, right, I've officially raised the boat from the ocean.

[16:48] Question is, how does that help me precisely? Well, we've got a captain's cabin with Oh god, another talking a book. I'm delighted. Also, I think I just went into the book.

[17:03] Hang on, where am I going? Because presumably Oh bloody hell, where am I now? Okay, I'm seeing lighthouses. And also

[17:15] hang on. Hang on. on. I think I might know where I am. Cheshire, there's a flipping a bit of a boat here. It's a very small lighthouse here. So, hang on. Hang on.

[17:30] hang on. Hang on. Back to yes, where we started. Can I go? to where I started because

[17:43] I think I might be stuck here now. But, I'm pretty sure yeah, this was like an I'm pretty sure yeah, this was like an island that the guy who wrote that book had a visited previously. In fact, I think it might be the same location the

[17:55] the book. It was a story about how yeah, he come here and there were just some kids and he like, you know, helped them build this lighthouse or something. So,

[18:11] you know what? I will take a key. That's great, though. I will take a key. That's great, though. Can I just have the key, please?

[18:24] Okay, if I just try and take the No, cuz the keys tied to a rope. Okay, hang on. Hang on. Let's try and figure out what's going on here. What's going on here is I can't climb the ladder

[18:40] because right now it's like yeah, stuck inside the wall. Some came. Check it everything a one a one a here. Check it everything a one a one a here. Hang on, what's all of this?

[18:53] Hang on, what's all of this? Okay. That's on a green.

[19:12] Okay. Nothing I can say. try again. Aha! Aha! That is some sort of a pumping system.

[19:26] So, right. The orientation to the left, that pumps the boats. It's about to say something I can go home, but Well, that's kind of cool. Right, that gets me access to like, you know, a

[19:42] gets me access to like, you know, a secret underwater chamber or something, which feels important, but also

[19:54] definitely feels like there's something that missing here. that missing here. Yeah. Water pipe.

[20:12] Double circle. But double circle might be important. Remember double circle is down here. Don't do remember double circle is down here. Take a picture of double circle down here, just in case we need to know

[20:26] that later because everything in this game matters, especially when it comes game matters, especially when it comes to bloody symbols. So, right. Back over to you, my friend. Now, central orientation, that refills

[20:40] the shed. But yeah, the central room is here. That is now available to explore. Once again, nice sealed doors at the bottom and Oh!

[20:52] Well, this is nice. So, okay, start ransacking everything. Have we got anything here that might actually be of use potentially? Here we go. One thing we do have is a red page. We know where that's supposed

[21:09] And also a mysterious floaty thing, which may possibly just be decorative at all. Blimey.

[21:21] Daggers and whatnot. Could just be a letter opener. That's Okay, daggers and syringes. Yeah, this is definitely getting a bit more worrying. Okay, we've got a page. As I can see,

[21:34] nothing else in here. So, back up top for a second. Because yeah, let's figure out what else is flooded. Like, is the lighthouse flooded? Yes. Yes, it is. So,

[21:47] right. Position of three, who drained the lighthouse presumably. And on top of that, right. Downstairs in the lighthouse it might be. Well, yeah. Something is locked. There we go. Locked box, absolutely.

[22:04] How do we Aha. If you're currently full of water, but we let the water out, then when we re-flood this area, you'll float. Then yeah, the water will just flow into it again. So, right. Drain it, reseal it.

[22:22] That's what we can do with here. So, yeah. Now, any other position should do yeah. Now, any other position should do just fine. And if I'm all right here, having just changed things over a bit, there we flipping go. Grab you, search

[22:37] there we flipping go. Grab you, search you into you. And that gets me Okay, just more keys that are tied to the lighthouse. Ah, but hang on. There is right here another keyhole. So, right. Grab second key.

[22:54] right. Grab second key. There we go. Now, we can use this here There we go. Now, we can use this here ladder to get up top in the lighthouse. Question it is uh how does that help me precisely?

[23:07] You, sir. What are you doing? Oh. Why did the game just go black for a second? I don't know, but like keep turning and that's presumably generating

[23:22] That possibly is being stored in a battery. So, okay, hang on. Hang on. If that is true, true, wires go to here and here. So,

[23:35] wait, hang on. How long have there been a two doors? I swear that didn't used to be a thing. Right, that power does drain over time.

[23:52] Question is, what is it powering? So, okay, let's get down and see what precisely that is like powering because Right, I think I just didn't come round this far, but okay.

[24:09] Down this way, which I may or may not have gone previously. I don't think so. I think this is the one I didn't go before. And so, hang on, there's before. And so, hang on, there's What the is going on here? Right.

[24:22] No, I definitely didn't John. Two sons. Two rooms. One of these rooms belongs to Cyrus, the other what's-his-face, the other one.

[24:35] So, okay. Building tools, et cetera, et cetera. Building tools, et cetera, et cetera. And some sort of thingy. Which appears to have only

[24:48] two settings. But, hang on. Can't interact with buttons, but Can't interact with buttons, but rib cage lamp. Bloody creepy. Okay, I need to insert something into this thing to make it do something, one

[25:04] assumes. Given the such a welcome mat here, probably open secret door. Meanwhile, back the way I came, there was a Yes.

[25:16] Another way here. So, back under water, lovely. But, okay, hang on. What's going on with your >> I feel like I just pushed something that I wasn't supposed to push. So, that

[25:33] would appear to have locked me in, perhaps. Hang on. again. Good. But, the alarm is still blaring in this

[25:48] Okay, question is what was the lighthouse powering? lighthouse powering? Cuz that I am not sure about, but okay. Motion up to the top here. Nothing up here but a telescope.

[26:06] Nothing up here but a telescope. That's all right. for anything. So, like, the boat is 186.

[26:30] what's significance? Not just random rocks, it's got to be something that matters. So, yeah, the mast is like 121. The lighthouse is Is that 135 or 136? Yeah, like, 121

[26:49] Is that 135 or 136? Yeah, like, 121 135 or 6 Right, John. Take some photos. You might need those numbers down the line. Okay, well, the only place I could enter angles would be

[27:05] this thing, which roughly corresponds to a compass. But, hang on. How many bloody buttons are there? Okay,

[27:17] How many bloody buttons are there? Okay, I make it 30 so. Which would have highly bloody inconveniently make you each button worth 11 bloody degrees.

[27:29] However, 11 degrees is a quite useful in so far as yeah, that would mean the 11th so far as yeah, that would mean the 11th of button would sync up with the masts, and the lighthouse would be only one a further along. That would be the 12th

[27:44] button. The problem being that room is now currently angry. now currently angry. I'm guessing however if I was to fill up the power meter, maybe that would reset the room. Oh, though luckily

[27:57] on the way right, figured it was a bit weird that I found a red page in one room, but no blue page in the other. So, it turns out I just didn't bother searching this guy's like, you know, tool workbench.

[28:11] tool workbench. Which has a also got a whole bunch of Which has a also got a whole bunch of maps on it, and one ripped page, too. Problem is, yes. Vault island marker final step

[28:28] instructions. Okay, hang on. Back to planner here in the lighthouse and whatnot. Just a the lighthouse and whatnot. Just a charger up you once again, please. Thank

[28:40] charger up you once again, please. Thank you. And there we go. You reset. So, Uh, on. If this is at the start, then a 1 2 a 3 If this is at the start, then a 1 2 a 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11

[28:55] 12. That'd be the mast. This would be the lighthouse. The lighthouse feels more important. lighthouse feels more important. >> [snorts]

[29:09] think I just made a good decision. And there we go. The lighthouse is now glinting. This is like I could tell though. Right, that doesn't change anything in the lighthouse, but it did turn on some of the lights underwater.

[29:25] Meaning, yeah, if we just return the pump to the left orientation, here we go. This room, the double circle room, is now looking a way better lit

[29:37] Meaning, uh, hopefully you're now powered and I get to read the book that lets me escape. So, okay.

[29:49] Find a world, get in, get the pages, then figure out how to escape again. And here we are back in the library. So, right. You lads can now have some more pages. You're very welcome. >> Is that true?

[30:05] >> Is that true? Is that true that you're here bananas at some point. And their dad locked them away inside like

[30:20] prison box or something. Like, I don't trust you. Right, as for you, good sir, >> Yeah, I'm going to be honest, you just straight-up look evil. Yeah, more

[30:32] rambling about helping only him and not helping his brother, etc., etc. I don't talking trust either of you. Still, I would say having successfully completed one island. How about we wrap things up there? This here is a missed

[30:48] and Okay. As I was expecting from Riven, it is a fascinating and thinky puzzle game that really makes you feel bloody smart when you figure something out. And yes, as I said at the start, this is actually

[31:00] the remake that was done back in 2021. So, link in the description below well worth a look, see I'd say. And yes, once again, this sort of thing just tickles me precisely what I'm in the mood for. So, okay. Do not be

[31:14] surprised to do for maybe just a maybe I pay a visit to some more old-school puzzle games in the future. So, let me know if you'd be interested. And we shall flipping see. But in the meantime, I've been Jonas. I've been Many a True

[31:27] Nerd. And this has been the fascinating Myst. Myst. Thank you very much and goodbye. Thank you very much and goodbye. Jebediah Kerman has not exploded.

[31:39] Jebediah Kerman has not exploded. Oh, When did that happen? 5 4 3 Oh, I forgot to turn the thrust on. 5 4 Is everything else How is everything

[31:51] Up to that point, that was going better than anyone expected.
