Physical Games Are Dying
45sNostalgic opening with a relatable emotional reaction to the end of physical game copies, tapping into gamer sentiment.
▶ Play Clip[00:00] Can we go one day without some form of bad news? Because I just woke up to this, and honestly, this hurts my very soul. Like, the days where you can go to, let's say, GameStop or just a game store, Walmart or whatever,
[00:14] and buy, like, a physical copy of a game is basically coming to an end now. Like, it's basically over now. Like, I remember going to, like, pretty much, like, GameStop, picking up a game,
[00:29] and like I would open up for instance a game manual like the game case and then go into the game manual and just see a bunch of different lore on the game and stuff having a physical disc sometimes having like the soundtrack with it I mean like
[00:41] the Oblivion Game of the Year edition I remember opening this up when I was a kid like this is the copy I bought back like when it released like when this version of Oblivion released on Xbox 360 this is the very same
[00:53] copy it's old like this is over a decade plus old and the fact that PlayStation is basically ending physical media, this is not going to just stop at PlayStation.
[01:07] I feel like a lot of people, you know, are starting to realize this, especially with this announcement this morning, like, to really come to the full realization. But with PlayStation basically pulling the pin and loading the trigger and shooting it,
[01:19] basically, this means that retroactively, we're going to have, like, Microsoft follow suit, we're going to see, you know, Nintendo follow suit, pretty much ending physical media. And it really marks an end for just so much in terms of, like, memories, but also the ability to actually own your games.
[01:39] And I feel like this is something that is very important, because, like, when you went to, you know, the game store and you used to buy, like, different games and stuff, you owned a physical copy. Like, you would get, for instance, like, back in 2001 when I bought this.
[01:52] Like, this is from 2001, by the way. Like, this is old. but like back when I got the original Halo like you owned the game the disc was yours you know the manual was yours the case was yours
[02:04] you could put it in your system and basically you wouldn't have to worry about any like issues of never being able to play your game again as long as you owned a console you were able to play your game completely without internet
[02:16] and since we now entered into the digital age and now most games are basically downloaded there has been a phasing out of physical media to where when you, let's say, buy a game, you will get basically, like, a code key within the actual case instead of an actual CD.
[02:34] And we've seen this, like, trend happen, especially over the last decade. But now that PlayStation has effectively said they're done with physical media, it's sad because this is going to hurt collectors.
[02:47] This is going to hurt, basically, the ownership of your games. And like I said this will affect Microsoft and Nintendo as well They will follow suit I would not be surprised within the next year we have the exact same announcement from them I would not even be shocked about that And on top of that
[03:03] as well, this really, um, this, this, this news is very fascinating for one big reason, which let me take a few moments to show you. Pirate Nation here actually points it out pretty well. He points out that just a few days ago, Sony removed hundreds of movies from people's accounts, even though they
[03:19] paid for them. And this is a problem that started being talked about, you know, recently. And basically, if this can happen to digital media, aka movies and stuff, or TV shows, on your Sony account, this can obviously
[03:31] happen with your games. And it's very clear a lot of these gaming companies and what they're trying to do now is pretty much phase out the ability of you actually owning said game. More or less, you're buying, let's say, a license to a game instead of owning the game
[03:43] and that you're renting it, pretty much. Like, when you, let's say, buy a game or you think you're buying a game, you're just temporarily having it as long as you have internet and as long as, you know, you have a certain amount of, like, rules or whatever, and they can take it away at any time, you won't have access to that
[03:58] game any longer. For instance, let's say five years passes and they close down the service or whatever on a certain console, whatever may happen, you might lose complete access to that game. The same cannot be said for physical media, obviously. For instance, there's no internet
[04:11] or whatever as long as I have, like, an original Xbox or whatever, I can play, you know, my old media, but basically that's what's happening here, is that Sony is phasing out the ability of you owning your games. You will no longer be able to own them, everything will be digital, and they can take it away
[04:26] at any moment if you piss them off or something. And that is fundamentally a horrifying reality that we all knew was eventually coming, and this is what's going to happen. And I feel like there's a lot of people who are going to say the exact same thing I'm
[04:39] about to say here, but it's going to be resorted to cloud-like streaming. Like, for instance, like, all your games, like, for instance, let's say, uh, I doubt this will ever be released, but, like, Record of Agroflore, okay, let's say this released on, you know, PlayStation or this released on Xbox or whatever, um, pretty much, they, they more or less will make it to where you download the game through a cloud system, and you will not be able to actually even download it.
[05:07] For instance, like, you're just streaming it completely from the cloud, and so there's no ability of you actually downloading the game. This kind of incentivizes that once again you'll go through a cloud service to be able to even access these games,
[05:19] and you'll no longer even be able to download them. That's probably the future of gaming as well, and they're slowly trying to rip away your ability to actually own things. This is just, um...
[05:31] I ain't waking up to this news, honestly. So this is a press release that PlayStation released today on their blog, saying, Physical disc production ending January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles.
[05:45] In response to shifting trends to consumer preference new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only So once again you will no longer be able to open up a game have discs or anything like that whatsoever by the way
[06:00] You'll no longer have a manual, which has been phased out a very long time ago. It's basically, if you buy a copy, you're pretty much just buying the plastic cover and a digital code. You're not getting a physical game anymore.
[06:12] You're not getting a disc. This is legitimately the end of physical media. Now, as consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continues to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.
[06:30] Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. This transition has no impact on games that already released or will be releasing prior to January 2028 in disc format.
[06:43] This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical disc. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.
[07:00] That's a load of bullshit, we'll talk about that in a second. We'll continue to prioritize our resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, Whether that's at retailers or PlayStation stores, we remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to our fans, and we thank you for your continued support.
[07:20] So, this is a load of more or less a bunch of mumbo-jumbo, corpo-garbo, Zacta, basically trying to say, oh, people want digital only, but we all know that's a load of bullshit. The reason why we know that's a load of bullshit is because people love scalping games, love selling them and marking them up for price at very absurd prices, and people eat it up and buy up the physical copies. That alone just spells it out for you.
[07:43] But also, the reason why PlayStation is doing this is what you already said, they want to phase out physical media, because you'll be forced to have online accounts with PlayStation's actual store, you will also no longer be able to own your games, you'll no longer be able to resell your games to, let's say, third parties or whatever, because it's just a digital copy.
[08:03] On top of that, instead of owning a game, you'll be more or less owning a license, and then that gets into the whole cloud thing that I already talked about. So, this is really interesting, the way they worded this, because it's a bunch of lies. And on top of that, you know, seeing Sony Interactive Entertainment say this is pretty shocking, especially since technically they're originally a Japanese company.
[08:22] For those that are wondering why I'm even saying that, it's because Japan really loves their physical media. You can really just look into it, you can find a lot of different articles and posts and stuff talking about this, but Japan loves physical media.
[08:35] They love owning, like, Blu-rays, DVDs, they love owning figures, different merchandise. They're big on physical media collection. And same can be said for games within Japan And the fact that Sony is a Japanese company doing this is pretty damning But then you realize the reason why this is happening is because Japan main headquarters now is in California Go figure
[08:57] So we know for a fact they don't have that same heart and soul that they used to have from Japan because it's now more or less an American corporation at this point, and like I said, they're housed in California. But the fact that they try to
[09:09] use that consumers prefer digital is just so much bullshit that it's just insane. They really, whoever wrote this, man, you know they were just chuckling to themselves because they
[09:21] know that this is not true. At all. But, yeah, this is the end. This is actually the end. There's no way of stopping this, obviously. You can cry about it, but that's just what it is. And, I mean,
[09:33] once again, it was always obvious that this is where the future of gaming was going to go. As gaming became more popular, and as digital became more popular, this was the inevitable, but to actually see it is just really bad,
[09:46] especially no longer getting the option of physical. The reason why also this is a really bad situation is because you would expect, since you're no longer going to be producing physical media, aka having to make plastic cases, making discs, or anything like that,
[10:01] you would assume that the game prices would go down. Like, for instance, what is now like a $60 or $70 game, you're going to soon go down maybe $50, maybe $40, because obviously you're not happy to spend all that money printing dicks, printing plastic and stuff.
[10:15] But then, though, we all know that that's not what's going to happen. They're going to basically up the prices of games continuously, thanks to GTA coming out soon, and prices of these games are going to go much higher, to $80, maybe $100, and
[10:28] it's not going to be physical anymore. Because one of the big reasons people are buying physical copies as well is for the collector goodies. Like, I remember buying the Reach stuff, it's way over there, I can't show you right now because I'd have to go dig through stuff, but like, this big, giant Halo Reach box set, that was like $150, or actually, no, no, I think it was $200, actually, back in 2012, but I remember buying it, day one release, I remember having to save up money, I was mowing a bunch of lawns and stuff, and I got it day one release, and you got a giant statue, you got a big box with it, you got, like, Halsey's Journal and everything, and that was one of the big reasons and incentives to buy physical media.
[11:04] the collector's items and stuff, but now that that's gone, there's just, it's crazy, like, they're gonna raise the prices of things, but everything's gonna be digital, so there's not gonna be any point of picking up physical merchandise anymore, so it's just, uh, yeah,
[11:18] bad decision, honestly, heartbreaking news, and I hate seeing this, it just is really, I hate waking up to this, man, I ain't seeing the end of, like, uh, an era to such a degree like
[11:30] like I grew up with physical media now it's gone but I guess I'll leave it at that tell me your thoughts and comments where I can build off this if you enjoy my content please subscribe leave a like on the video and also leave a comment
