Returned from a 70-day European backpacking trip, breaking down expenses into five categories: travel, food, accommodation, experiences, and other.
Spent $600 total on six flights. Major flights (Chicago-Lisbon, Lisbon-Rome, Paris-Chicago) cost $468 by booking 9 months in advance during shoulder season.
Paid $369 for a 10-day in 2-month Eurail Pass, plus $43 in reservations, totaling $411. Recommended comparing individual fares before committing.
Spent $1,700 total ($24.45/night). Stayed 80% in hostel dorms, 20% in Airbnbs (only when splitting cost cheaper than hostel). Booked in advance for limited options.
Total food cost $2,440 ($35/day). Spent $670 on groceries and $1,700 on eating out. Cooked about 25% of dinners, emphasizing local cuisine as part of experience.
Travel insurance cost $262 from World Nomads. Switched to T-Mobile international plan ($50 per 30 days, 15GB data). Total phone cost $162 for 70 days.
Spent $167 on alcohol (not heavy drinker) and $44 on laundry (done 9 times, 4 free at Airbnbs).
Total spent $6,741 ($96.30/day). Saved funds by working since age 15, originally budgeted $15,000. Remaining money will fund a Costa Rica trip.
A 70-day backpacking trip across Europe is possible for under $7,000 if planned wisely, with savings on flights and accommodation offsetting food and experiences.

8:08[00:00] I just returned from my European
[00:03] going to break down exactly how much
[00:07] budgeting tips on how you can save money
[00:12] five categories being travel food
[00:17] no secret that travel is going to be one
[00:22] flights will likely be your biggest cost
[00:28] 560
[00:32] together and flew TAP Air Portugal
[00:37] to Rome and Paris back to Chicago in
[00:43] $468 this airfare was so cheap because a
[00:47] advance and B I went on the shoulder
[00:53] February and I flew out of Paris in
[00:58] roundtrip flight from Rome to Athens and
[01:04] Dubrovnik Croatia my next major travel
[01:11] $369 for the 10day in 2-month pass which
[01:18] also paid an additional
[01:24] altogether this cost me
[01:29] indiv individual train fairs for each of
[01:33] committing to a pass personally opting
[01:37] bucks plus it's incredibly convenient
[01:41] you can cancel a travel day with ease
[01:47] bucks on other major travel this
[01:51] separately for my pass day trip travel
[01:56] Islands finally I spent $240 on public
[02:03] I tried to do as much walking as
[02:07] the public transit you're not going to
[02:11] back altogether travel cost me $1,600 or
[02:17] $1,490 which divided over the course of
[02:23] and 26 if you're willing to spend a
[02:28] your travel you can travel a affordably
[02:32] next expense category is food first I
[02:37] $670 on groceries this included food
[02:42] for lunches a lot of the times I would
[02:46] and cheese for lunch I cooked about 25%
[02:52] sustainable to cook every single night
[02:56] to the hospital exhausted from a day of
[03:01] eating out is considerably more
[03:05] $1,700 on eating out which includes
[03:10] restaurants and street food I believe
[03:14] eating the Local Foods and that you
[03:18] that you visit in total food cost me
[03:25] $2,260 which breaks down into $35 or €32
[03:32] food but I also eat a lot more food than
[03:37] weigh 185 lbs and I worked out almost
[03:43] steps per day there are many days where
[03:49] think you could get away with spending a
[03:54] the time street food costs about the
[03:58] about €10 a meal I don't think it's
[04:03] your meals if you're doing as much
[04:08] obviously if you cook more of your own
[04:13] could save a bit of money in this
[04:17] accommodation about 80% of the time I
[04:22] other 20% of the time was airbnbs
[04:27] definitely be an adjustment at first but
[04:33] only stayed in airbnbs when I had
[04:37] when that split cost was cheaper than
[04:42] $1,700 on accommodation which comes out
[04:46] $24.45 or €
[04:53] average cost of accommodation by country
[04:57] Hungary Austria and C
[05:02] may not be a great representation of how
[05:08] accommodation in Europe is not crazy
[05:13] can go in the offseason or the shoulder
[05:17] would be to book out hosts in advance
[05:22] may also want to book hostiles in
[05:26] times but for busy cities with more
[05:31] days prior also if you book through
[05:36] for free cancellation which will allow
[05:41] you find something cheaper or if the
[05:45] staying in hostiles while solo traveling
[05:50] the cost of an Airbnb with someone else
[05:55] like-minded people my next cost category
[06:01] excursions and activities for instance
[06:07] a church I did a wine tour at the
[06:10] Portugal but outside of that didn't do
[06:16] guy so that was an easy thing not to
[06:22] souvenirs like bracelets and rings and
[06:28] $345 or
[06:33] $493 or €
[06:41] have the other category the first thing
[06:46] insurance I got my travel insurance
[06:51] for health insurance trip cancellation
[06:57] cost me
[07:02] fortunately I didn't need to use my
[07:07] have because if you were to get
[07:11] in a really tough spot in a foreign
[07:16] bill I switched over to T-Mobile for
[07:20] American Carrier plan that was nearly as
[07:25] carriers charge $10 per day extra which
[07:31] international plan costs just 50 bucks
[07:37] those I was allotted 15 gigs of
[07:41] typically use between 6 and 7 gigs I
[07:47] phone that much so that was really just
[07:53] to get local SIM cards because you need
[07:57] that you visit and I was legit in
[08:02] have just been a nuisance in total the
[08:07] $162 with tax the next other category
[08:14] $167 on drinking I'm not a huge drinker
[08:19] clubbing is almost part of the
[08:25] general for me I was just too tired to
[08:31] long day of sightseeing but I met plenty
[08:36] literally every single day so you're
[08:40] spectrum of not drinking at all to
[08:46] expensive if you're drinking and going
[08:51] laundry I did my laundry n times over
[08:57] airbnbs which was free and and five
[09:02] cost me about 8 to do my laundry
[09:08] another
[09:12] $590 all right now for the moment that
[09:17] spent drum roll
[09:21] please $
[09:27] 6,244 which comes out to
[09:33] 8920 per day if you eat as much as I do
[09:40] this is as cheap as you can do it but
[09:44] or cut other costs like alcohol or
[09:49] lastly I wanted to talk about how I
[09:53] for this adventure when I got my first
[09:58] specifically for this trip and over the
[10:04] jobs and other jobs while I was at
[10:09] corporate internship although I
[10:13] trip I soon realized that I could spend
[10:20] with that extra money I'm planning on
[10:24] for a month and I'm going to make a
[10:28] doing vlogs vogs of my entire trip thus
[10:34] [Music]
