All 36 Heart Pieces in Ocarina of Time — Step-by-Step Guide & Transcript

[00:00] One of the biggest staples in the entire Zelda franchise is collecting pieces of heart to increase Link's health. In Ocarina of Time, there are 36 pieces of heart to find in total, spread across the tiles and adult eras of the game.

[00:13] In this guide video, we'll show you how to get all 36 pieces of heart in the Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.

[00:25] There are 8 heart containers earned from defeating the game's various dungeon bosses. sure you grab these, so that combined with the 36 heart pieces, you can reach a full 20 hearts.

[00:39] The first piece of heart can be obtained in the Hyrule Castle Town Market in the Child Era. At night, find a white dog near the bazaar and the man standing in the window. Run around the dog until it follows you, then head to the back alley.

[00:57] this door facing the camera and speak to the woman inside to return her dog Richard to her, rewarding you with a piece of heart.

[01:10] The second piece of heart is found at Long Long Ranch as a child. In the back of the ranch is a small tower. Enter it and push the blocks around to reveal a crawl space. Crawl through and you'll find a piece of heart in the hay.

[01:27] The next piece of heart is found in Kakariko Graveyard as a child.

[01:41] Open the fourth grave from the right in the top row, and drop inside. Play the sun song to stun the re-dead, then play it again to spawn a treasure chest containing a piece of heart.

[01:57] In the evening, before midnight,

[02:20] participate in Zambe's grave-digging tour in the Kakariko graveyard. Make sure he digs over a patch of dirt, specifically, and that you have some rupees to spare, because this piece of heart is a random drop.

[02:33] If you're unlucky, like me, this could take nearly 200 rupees to pop up.

[02:45] If you need to check the time, hit a secret stone, or talk to the guard at the main entrance to Kakariko Village. The next piece of heart is found in Kakariko Village, and can be obtained as either a child or adult.

[02:58] There is a man lounging on the rooftop near the watchtower. This piece of heart can be obtained as early as your first visit to Kakariko as a child. Climb up the watchtower, and hug the upper left corner. While V-targeting, leap to the left.

[03:11] If you lined up correctly, make sure to land either directly on the rooftop, or on the thin fence next to it. climb up onto the roof, and speak to the man to get the piece of heart. Now, none of that was the intended method, so if this is too difficult,

[03:26] the actual method is to reach this roof using the hookshot as an adult.

[03:42] Another piece of heart can be obtained in Kakariko Village early on as a child. Inside Impa's house is a caged cow with a piece of heart next to it. In order to get this, you'll have to enter the house from the hole in the back.

[03:54] There are two ways to get up here. You can drop in after riding Cape Cora or Cape Bora back down to the village from the top of Death Mountain, or by using a cuckoo from the nearby construction site. If you leap towards the ledge and let go of the cuckoo just when you reach it,

[04:08] you'll be able to climb up and get inside. While you can technically get this next piece of heart right after obtaining the ocarina from Saria,

[04:25] you return to the Lost Woods not long after in order to learn Saria's song. This is routed as number 7 to make it easier, as you be able to obtain number 8 at the same visit to the forest From the entrance to the Lost Woods head to the right once and drop down off the ledge Stand on the tree stump and pull out your ocarina to perform with the two Skull Kids

[04:45] Successfully repeat their song three times, with each reward better than the last, and you'll receive a piece of heart. From the entrance to the Lost Woods, head to the left once,

[05:06] and stand on the stump opposite the Solo Skull Kid. Play Sorry A Song, and you'll be rewarded with a piece of heart.

[05:21] The next piece of heart is found in Goron City as a child. Toss a bomb into the large moving pot. It will spin and randomly land on one of the three faces.

[05:35] If it lands on the happy face, you'll be rewarded with 25 rupees and a piece of heart. Above the entrance to Dodongo's Cavern on Death Mountain Trail is a piece of heart.

[05:55] The question is, how do you get up here? There's the intended method and the fast method. The fast method you can do right after obtaining the Goron's Bracelet. On the ledge near Goron City, where you throw down the bomb to open the dungeon entrance,

[06:08] throw a bomb away from the ledge, then turn diagonally to the right, V-target, and backflip over the wall. If done successfully, you'll land above the cavern entrance, and you can walk right up to the piece of heart.

[06:21] The intended way to get this is to plant a magic bean in the soft soil just outside of the cavern entrance. Come back as an adult and ride the plant up in the air. Once it rises above the cavern entrance, leap off, and then grab the piece of heart.

[06:39] Climb up to the top of Death Mountain from the trail and enter the crater. Immediately upon entering, head for the ledge up ahead and climb down it. There should be enough time to climb down, grab the piece of heart inside the nook, then escape back out for safety.

[06:53] If you're worried about making it in time, though, make sure you have a bottled ferry with you. In Hyrule Field, in the squared-off fence around the entrance to Lake Hylia, place a bomb in the center.

[07:18] A cave entrance appears, and inside is a Deku scrub selling a piece of heart for surprisingly cheap. Play the Bomb 2 Bowling minigame in Hyrule Castle Town's Market as a child, and the Piece of Heart is one of the potential prizes for winning.

[07:37] You may need to play a few times to get the heart to show up, as the reward is randomly determined each time you play. Grab the cuckoo near the start of Zora River and follow the upper path.

[07:50] Leap towards this ledge, and let go of the cuckoo as you approach it so you can grab onto it. Then leap for the Piece of Heart to get it. Grab the cuckoo near the start of Zora's River and take it all the way up to the entrance

[08:07] to Zora's Domain, face away from the waterfall, and leap off the talus ledge, floating down to the isolated piece of hearth. Using a deku stick, grab the fire from the royal chamber in Zora's Domain and bring

[08:25] it to the torch down the stairs. Then, bring fire to the torch just outside the shop, in the shallow water next to the ring of rocks,

[08:37] and the pair under the waterfall. Lighting all of these torches fast enough will reward you with a piece of heart.

[08:55] Grab a cuckoo near the bridge in Gerudo Valley and leap down off the left side of the cliff.

[09:10] You're heading towards this ledge on the other side with a lone wooden crate on it. Roll into the crate once you made it and inside is a piece of heart

[09:25] If you manage to keep the cuckoo with you, you can then use it to reach the next one as well. Grab a cuckoo near the bridge in Gerudo Valley, and leap down off the bridge towards the Gerudo side.

[09:38] If you keep towards the wall, you'll come across a long ledge. To one side is a cow and a lone gerudo, but you'll want to head upstream towards the waterfall. Behind the waterfall is a ladder, and climbing up it leads directly to a piece of heart.

[09:58] Spend 20 rupees to go fishing at Lake Hylia. It's recommended to go right at dawn or dusk, so you can play the fun song just before walking in. You can fish for as long as you want, so you can take your time with this.

[10:10] To get the reward, you'll need to reel in a fish that's 10 pounds or bigger. Near the center of the pond, generally around this underwater log, is the fish that you're looking for. Cast your line towards it, and wiggle the control stick to get its attention.

[10:24] When it bites, hold A and R to reel in the line, and tilt the control stick in the opposite direction from where the fish is pulling. It may take a few tries to get the fish to bite, but reeling it in will indicate that it's a 10-pound fish.

[10:38] Make sure to save it. Then, talk to the man at the counter to have it weighed, and you'll be rewarded with a piece of heart. As a child, plant the magic dean in the soft soil around the corner from the entrance to Cacolico Graveyard.

[10:55] Then, as an adult, ride the magic dean plant up the ledge and roll into the wooden crate to reveal a piece of heart. After completing Dambe's race in Kakariko Graveyard, you'll exit into the windmill in the village.

[11:12] Carefully jump onto the moving platform at the center, then leap over to the piece of heart when the platforms line up.

[11:25] Beat Dambe in his race in Kakariko Graveyard a second time, this time completing the race in under a minute. Keep the exact route in mind, rolling during shurter waves and taking care to avoid the fireballs he drops.

[11:39] If you're struggling, you can wait until you've obtained a long shot from the water temple and latch on to the torch at the end of the final section to save off some time. Winning the race in under a minute will reward you with a piece of heart.

[11:53] Halfway up Zora River as a child is a fallen branch in the water with some frogs nearby. Stand in the spot where Navi is glowing green and play the Song of Storms to please the frogs, who will then reward you with a piece of heart.

[12:06] After playing the songstorms for the Flags in Zoro's River as a child,

[12:31] pull out your ocarina again and play more songs from them. Specifically, all of the non-warp songs. Zelda's Lullaby, Saria's Song, Ikona's Song, The Sun's Song, and the Song of Time,

[12:43] to make all the frogs grow. Then, play a minigame with the frogs, helping them catch the bugs above them. Each frog gets mapped to a button on the N64 controller. Here's what they get mapped to.

[12:55] A, C left, C right, and C down. They want you to go pretty fast, and it's very easy to mess this up, But the order will always be the same. The order is A, C left, C right, C down, C left, C right, C down, A, C down, A, C down, C right, C left, A.

[13:18] Complete this, and you'll get another piece of heart. After obtaining the Lens of Truth, return to the Hyrule Castle Town Market.

[13:31] Complete the treasure chest guessing game, where you can successfully cheat using the Lens of Truth. Get the small key each time, and at the end of the game, it's a piece of heart.

[13:53] After collecting 50 gold Scapulla tokens return to the house of Scapulla in Kakariko Village Your reward will come from the man in the upper right corner A piece of heart

[14:05] As a child, plant a macadamia in the soft soil next to the laboratory at Lake Hylia. Return as an adult and ride the plant up to the rooftop.

[14:17] Alternatively, you can use the scarecrow song in the hookshot. up to the lookout point and you'll find a piece of heart. As a child, use the bolero of fire to warp to Death Mountain Crater. Nearby is some soft soil, so plant the magic bean. Then return

[14:34] later as an adult and take the flying plant. It brings you right up to the piece of heart on the large rock. As you cross the ice platforms in Zola's Fountain to reach the Ice Cavern,

[14:54] there's a piece of heart to the right on an isolated block of ice. Hop across the moving icebergs to make it over. In the Ice Cavern, in the room where you obtained the compass, look across from that treasure chest. A piece of heart is frozen in red ice, so you'll

[15:10] have to use some blue fire from the room to thaw that out. After obtaining the iron boots, drop down to the bottom of Zora's Fountain. At the

[15:24] very center, along the bottom, is a piece of heart. In the northwest corner of Hyrule Field, the first tree in the clearing will react to the

[15:38] Shard of Agony. If you chase Long Long Ranch from here, you'll see the path nearby. Place a bomb next to the tree, and a cave will open. Use the iron boots to dive down and collect a piece of heart at the bottom of the pond.

[15:55] As an adult, return to the fishing hole at Lake Hylia and catch the fish larger than 15 pounds in the pond.

[16:11] As a reward, you will get the Golden Scale, allowing Link to dive even further in the water. Then, head to the laboratory. Dive to the bottom of the water tank and touch the bottom.

[16:23] You cannot do this with the iron boots. Once you touch the bottom, the puzzle-complete sand tray will play. Talk to the scientist, and he'll reward you with a piece of heart.

[16:46] Climb up to the highest point of the Gerudo Fortress, leaping across rooftops and climbing up vine walls. There is a large treasure chest you will be able to reach with a long shot, and inside is a piece of hearth.

[16:58] Here we go.

[17:17] Participate in the Horseback Archery minigame found behind the Garuda Fortress and score over a thousand points. Hitting the center of the target nets you 100 points, as do the pots. If you get over 1,000 points, you'll be rewarded with a piece of heart.

[17:37] As a child, warp to the Desert Colossus and plant the magic bean in the soft soil next to the entrance to the Spirit Temple. Then, return as an adult and ride the magic bean along its route.

[17:49] Jump off when it passes over the arc in front of the temple to grab the piece of heart. And those are all 36 pieces of heart defined across Hyrule in Ocarina of Time.
