AI Summary
Mark Rober explores an abandoned 25-story hotel before its demolition, competing in the 'Demolympics' to determine who triggers the building's implosion. He explains the engineering behind controlled demolitions, including the use of explosives and gravitational potential energy.
There is significant engineering involved in destroying buildings, using clever methods to make structures fall exactly as desired.
Wrecking balls are effective on concrete and brick but not steel, which bends rather than crumbles.
The equivalent energy of 20,000 sticks of dynamite is stored as gravitational potential energy in a tall building; explosives weaken key spots to let gravity do the work.
Pre-weaken structural walls, drill holes for 2,000 sticks of dynamite on lower floors, plus 1,500 sticks throughout, triggered with millisecond delays from bottom up and sides inward.
Competition includes hatchet throwing, toilet bowling, paintball, art contest, rooftop bowling, and drone race.
Bam led development of Creative Kit, a monthly subscription box that encourages creative thinking through customizable toys.
Mark and Bam take turns launching bowling balls at a structure to trigger the building's implosion; Bam's final shot succeeds.
The building is successfully imploded using a combination of explosives and gravitational potential energy, with the final trigger set off by a bowling ball in a giant game of Angry Birds.

Download .txt[00:00] This is the world's largest angry birds level, and the hope is that my bowling ball herd will set up a chain reaction that will actually collapse this 24-story building. The very same building, in fact, that I'm currently standing on top of, because first things first, I've got to calibrate some things.
[00:18] We all know there's loads of engineering that goes into constructing a building.
[00:34] Ain't it? We all know there's loads of engineering that goes into constructing a building. But there's loads of engineering that goes into destroying buildings as well.
[00:48] Whether it's silos, giant stadiums, humongous buildings, or radio towers, there are really clever ways to get something to fall down exactly how you want it to fall down. And today, I'm going to reveal the engineering secrets of how the pros do exactly that.
[01:04] But first, it's important to point out that now this hotel is being demolished, there's absolutely no reason I can't do this. Or this.
[01:18] Or this. Or even this. Savage. Truth be told, most of the hotel looks like this.
[01:30] Because for the past year, this place has been gutted to salvage everything they could, in addition to making it safer for the demolition. But for the last 40 years, it looks something more like this. Tens of thousands of people have come here to attend conferences,
[01:44] which spend the night as hotel guests. It's even used for marriages and been in a couple famous movies. So here was the pool before, and here it is now. Well, this is what the entrance keeps to look like, but here's what it looks like now.
[01:56] But alas, all good things must come to an end, so I decided to do my part to help by ending anything I could find.
[02:09] Not my pitch? Not my pitch? There it is. And as satisfying as that was, I soon realized I had a bucket list opportunity to explore a creepy abandoned building like all those videos I love to watch on YouTube.
[02:22] And if I learned anything from years of watching Scooby-Doo, that you never explore a creepy abandoned building alone. So I brought Bam, one of our many talented Crunchwrap toy engineers, and she has engineering degrees from Carnegie Mellon and MIT, and in her spare time, she builds BattleMonts.
[02:41] I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. So I knew she could keep me safe. Welcome to the crazy hotel. Let's go. At least when we let our engineering brains get too technical with this stuff. To give it a potential energy.
[02:53] Crazy. We picked up some of the highlights we were going to have to hit on our tour of destruction. The best part about it being an old band of buildings is you're allowed to do things like this. Things like this.
[03:06] See how it's really so cool. With that little bit of foreshadowing out of the way, we hit the road. We have a giant... Starting with the banquet hall. An elegant eating and meeting room space that can hold up to 10,000 people.
[03:22] Yet now only has two. Whoa. Okay, this is creepy. Unless we were the only occupant. If I was a ghost, this would definitely be the room I would occupy. I'm tied on this ledge hammer because you're scared of it. Okay. But ultimately, this floor felt a little less spooky.
[03:37] Whoa. And there's still a piano. And a little more bougie. And we kept on finding destroyed remnants of the elegant cat. Whoa. No diving? This is the swimming pool.
[03:49] What? Including this gorgeous swimming pool. This must have been a beautiful pool. The tile works look impeccable. And this elegant ball. This must have been one of the ballers. Look at the chandelier. But ultimately, all nice things.
[04:02] She's going down. Let's come to an end. And we were here to speak things up. Oh, wow. Hush chandelier. Oh, wow.
[04:14] This was inside a bowling ball. Nothing was safe, including the giant snake. The strong safe.
[04:27] Knuckles. Whoa. Toilet. I want to smash these. Yay. I wanted a toilet break. Okay. All right, feels good.
[04:42] Oh my gosh, I don't want to know what that is. Oh, honestly, that smells. Oh my God, that smells so bad.
[04:55] With this 4 suddenly becoming inexplicably pungent, we moved on to 4-3, hoping it would smell a little better. When it comes to toilet spam, this is an embarrassment of wealth. We realized the sudden influx of toilet
[05:07] because this was probably the floor where the hotel actually started. You see all the bathtubs? So, like, this was a door. You came in here. There's some kind of cabinet. Bed was probably here. And then the next one over was the mirror of that, right?
[05:20] Door came in here. That's the bathroom. You can see the tiles in the bathroom. So this was a hotel floor. That where all the toilets are coming from man What kind of mirrors are you Who knew it was so fun when you have permission to break it
[05:40] When I get bored, I'll do it at punchline. You don't have permission. Now that we've sufficiently explored the building, watch your head. Oh, I'm short, it's fine. It was time to destroy the building. So to see who gets to knock down the Angry Birds Tower, which would trigger the whole implosion,
[05:54] we devised a six-stage destruction competition called the Demolympics. But before we commence the Demolympics and subsequently demolish this entire massive building, let's quickly talk about how we demolish an entire massive building.
[06:08] Because when most people think of building demolition, a lot of times they think of this. A giant wrecking ball. And while wrecking balls can weigh up to 12 tons and they look really cool, they're really most effective against concrete and brick buildings because they crumble.
[06:20] But steel doesn't crumble. It just bends into form. so even the largest wrecking ball would be no match for our 25-story steel building, which means you need a lot more energy. If you look really closely, you could see the equivalent energy of 20,000 sticks of dynamite right here.
[06:36] It's just hidden in the form of gravitational potential energy, meaning there's a lot of heavy stuff really up high in the air, and if you are somehow able to weaken the building in key spots, especially its bottom, maybe by using some explosives,
[06:48] then the building would start to fall and crush itself under all that weight. This is why the fastest and cheapest way to make the building not exist anymore is to let gravity do all the work for you over a couple of really exciting seconds
[07:00] and then to spend the next couple of months cleaning up all the debris on the ground. So here you can see this whole process in action where the explosive charges destroy the base of the cooling tower
[07:12] and then gravity takes care of the wreck. It turns out you actually don't need that many explosives if you've already got a bunch of potential energy to work with. This is another great example where a radio tower comes crashing straight down like a dart.
[07:25] But sometimes, instead of falling straight down, you might want it to fall in a certain direction. And there's a lot of science involved here, but fundamentally, you just want to weaken the side end of the structure you want it to fall towards, as you can see here. And then not only will it fall in the right direction, but it might also look really cool in the process.
[07:40] But this isn't always as straightforward as it seems. Like in this case, even though the structure clearly isn't weakened on the correct side, the silo still falls backwards right on the excavator that was in the process of weakening the base.
[07:52] For our building, the plan was to start by pre-weakening some of the key structural walls by cutting big holes in them, and then use an 8-foot drill bit to pour a bunch of holes you could place 2,000 sticks of dynamite into on the critical two lower floors.
[08:04] But you also place an additional 1,500 sticks of dynamite throughout the rest of the structure to ensure it doesn't all stick together and just roll over like this. Then at the moment of detonation, the dynamite's triggered with a millisecond delay,
[08:18] starting from the bottom up and from the sides inwards. And this means it only costs you 3,500 sticks of dynamite to unlock access to the equivalent of 20,000 sticks of dynamite stored as gravitational potential energy.
[08:30] So the building crushes itself into a relatively small rubble pile that's much cheaper and easier to clean up afterwards. Now that we know what it takes to bring down a building of the size, We found iron things off in the world's first demolympics to see who gets the honor of bringing the building down.
[08:44] Starting with event one, the hatchet. And the first story for Bam turns out a really good at throwing hatchets. That is, as long as the handle sticks still count. No, no, thank you! Because these hatchets apparently have really sharp handles.
[08:59] No! What?! Securing me to the first point of the game. In the next round, we took advantage of what happened to be an abundant natural resource in this building. There's toys everywhere! Why are there so many toilets? More toilets.
[09:11] So many toilets. Well, that's a toilet. Toilet. Toilet, right? More toilets. It's kind of pretty. It is. But more toilets. Three stacks up on top of each other, grab two bowling balls, and begin game number two,
[09:23] the toilet bowl. I'm going to do a strategy, Dan. The one skip.
[09:37] All right. Oh, interesting. Switching my strategy, I see.
[09:52] And just like that, we were all tied up. Just you! The third event in the Devil Abyss was a paintball battle. First one to give Tosaka's win, but she might have brought the defensive mechanism of her own.
[10:05] Now we needed some way to throw each other apart, So I drew up the arm B on BAM and she drew an M on me.
[10:37] Look! Where you selling?
[10:52] Um you get it. We will get Gush on my walk Oh Rain I love you so much Eh ess Ey ho hoHwolf soundoud soundoud
[11:10] soundoud Yourience I am tickling
[11:26] estado I love you. David! David! David! And as it turns out, the mystery of Ben was none other than Nick DiGiovanni, the Internet's favorite chef. And he was going to judge the winner. You got one right between your, your pants.
[11:39] Oh, oh no. That looks like you went to the bathroom. That's okay. Like an accident. Mark, I don't think you hit it once. Why? She's so small. It's like a tiny target. It's not fair. I'm going to give a massive victory to Ben. Yes!
[11:51] You're a food chef. You're not even qualified to make that call. And why'd you bring me here? With Bam adding yet another point on the board, he stepped out of the battlefield and into the world of fine art. Bam, you're going down! Sure, Mike! Okay.
[12:04] Oh, no. It's running! Ah! How are you doing, Mike? Oh, it's so good! Oh, I'm really liking this. I'm in great. I'm kind of pandering to the judge. The judge is coming!
[12:17] Nick, I'm so glad you're here, because this will be the easiest judging you've ever done. Ah, dang. I'll admit BAM's was pretty good, but it was no match for my likeness of Nick. That's neat?
[12:29] Yeah, that's clear. Why am I crying? What's that? That's a stink, obviously. You love stink. And then this is fat Gus. I'm going to go clean it. It's much cleaner and much more artistic, and it actually looks like there's some detail and skill involved in it.
[12:43] So because of that, Mark, actually, you might want to watch out for this. Oh, no. Nobody should have to look at this. It actually looks a lot better Objectively, that does look better
[12:56] And with that, Bam put another point on the board Making the total of 3-1 With only two events remaining I have to pull out all the stops for the next round To keep my hopes alive of being the one Who got to blow up this 25-story building
[13:08] And though I was starting at the bottom Time for me to rise to the top But on my way up to the roof I found a soon-to-be demolished conference room Where I had a surprise waiting for Bam Sam, even though you are currently beating me into Demolympics, I want to take a second to brag about you.
[13:21] Because everyone knows we have BuildBox and HatPack, where you build these super fun toys and robots that you do engineering every month. But you've spent the last year and a half leading the efforts here at CrunchLabs to make this. The final box is a trilogy of CrunchLabs boxes.
[13:35] That's right, Mark. This is Creative Kids. It's a box you get this little build box. It's a super fun toy that's been engineered to help you build a creative part of your brain. We actually researched and tested this a bunch. This is what the creative part of your brain looks like when watching an iPad.
[13:49] And this is what it looks like when playing with creative kids. And everything is customizable to encourage creative thinking. So my treehouse might look like this. Now you can decorate. I like this part. Or a sandwich's might look like this.
[14:01] Look at this. This is so good. The best part is that the treehouse is just the start of a whole town that you get to imagine with every new monthly addition and a new animal scent. Just like the best girl.
[14:13] So Billbox and Hackpest teach you how to build. But thanks to Bam and our other talented toy engineers, Creative Kit grows your creativity, helping you dream up what to do. The first time I've had you covered this holiday when it comes to creative engineering,
[14:26] now from ages 6 to 106. All right, Bam, to the roost. Good luck, Mark. Lucky for me, one boy. It's my best event. Sure. What do you mean, sure?
[14:39] Here we go. Three, two, one. Woo! That is so close! That's my computer in bed!
[14:52] I told you this was my best event! Oh, oh no, oh no! Pretty close! That was... Oh my god!
[15:09] There it is! Oh boy! Is this my new girl? That's so good! Alright, last one. This time I am going to look. Here we go.
[15:24] Oh, that's money. Come back. Oh, I hate it. It's my last time. They struggled with me at the back.
[15:40] Oh, wow. Victory. I needed that. Thank you. That's very sad of you, ma'am. Because while I was the closest, I won the event, and the chance to give you the gratifying ending we were all hoping for.
[15:55] For the final event, we had a drone race, which, of course, is worth two points. Wait, what? Final event's always two points, ma'am. Don't think about it too much. Just be grateful you're here, okay? I was too red, and despite your fans' lack of gratitude,
[16:09] I gave her two chances to win with blue and white. Three, two, one. I'm so so so so Ok they're in the building
[16:21] To see you I can see you Oh my goodness Oh my goodness Oh my goodness You're so crazy Hurry hurry hurry hurry I think I going to be scared fan Up the escalator Whoa Hey Bang off It a red one
[16:42] Bang and roar! Let's go! Wow! Up the elevator!
[16:55] Yes! Let's go on! Let's go, let's go, let's go! Oh my god! You just got fun! That was one we won! Let's go!
[17:12] Oh my goodness! This is so crazy! Oh my god! Let's go! Let's go!
[17:24] I'm going to win! Let's go! Let's go! No! I knew it!
[17:36] Dang it! I am the Michael Phelps of the Demolympics. And with the world's first Demolympic gold secured in the honor of taking down the building, he headed over to play the world's largest game of Angry Birds. All right, Ben, clearly I earned this.
[17:49] Let's set up the first shot. Everyone knows I'm the real winner. I mean, most of you have the real tire. All right, Ben. If I hit the strike, this goes down and the building's coming with it.
[18:01] If you don't, then it's my turn. 24-story building coming down in 3, 2, 1, go! Yay! Go! I'm done!
[18:13] Dang it! When we play, I'm done. You'll love to see it. Go! What do you think is what it blocks from?
[18:25] That's my Kevlar. These are 15-pound bowling balls. The fact that that hasn't dropped yet is remarkable. By the way, I should mention, if we implode this building, the footage will be incredible because we've got 20 security cameras recording at 4K inside the building.
[18:39] We're laying near footage at the speed of light through four miles of fiber optic cable, capturing every frame until the exact final moment the cameras get destroyed. Hit it with some kinetic energy!
[18:56] Wow, I'm looking at barely hanging on They haven't only managed to knock down one part of the structure So with hopes of taking down the rest and setting off the detonator
[19:08] I just came to the center And was only able to loosen it up But on our next stop, they can't somehow manage to turn it right back I believe this was what you meant to do
[19:20] What? Right in the cartoon physics, what's going on here? All right, Mark, I redid my calculations. Go!
[19:32] Oh, man, what's up? Oh, man, what's up? Oh, man. And although Bam Shaw knocked down more of the structure, it still didn't quite hit the fuse. I'm not sure we're getting three stars on this level, Bam.
[19:45] So it's up to me to deliver the final blow. All right, Bam, it all comes down to this. If I hit the pillar of planet out here, hopefully that rock will hit the plunger, which will start a few years, which will take down that 24-story building.
[19:57] Okay, here we go. What the heck? That's like an inch left.
[20:10] Once again, I set you up for the perfect shot. Thank you. All right, Mark, let's do this. One, two, three. Oh, oh, oh, oh.
[20:50] Thank you.
[21:20] Oh my gosh!
[21:36] It's gone! It's gone! It's gone! It's gone! After the dust has settled, we went over, and sure enough, almost everything had been destroyed. Wait, is that a toilet? I'm so stoked we were finally able to tell you about Creative Kit
[21:51] because it's the perfect addition of your Christmas wish list if you want to glow the creative part of your brain in the most fun way possible with me and Singlish only at CardFuzz.com
