Why a second job is NOT a side hustle
45sReframes the common understanding of side hustles, creating a relatable 'aha' moment about flexibility and enjoyment.
▶ Play ClipThis video presents seven side hustle ideas aimed at generating an extra $1,000 per month. The creator emphasizes a philosophy of side hustles as flexible, enjoyable, and high-value services rather than second jobs. Each idea is evaluated on ease of starting, making the first $100, and long-term effort, with a focus on the 'Permissionless Apprentice' model for landing clients.
A true side hustle should pay more than a service job, be enjoyable, and offer flexibility. It's different from a second job which has a capped income, is often boring, and ties you to a schedule.
Money is an exchange of value. To make money, you must learn a valuable skill and find people willing to pay for it. The formula is: learn a skill + find people who need it.
Focus on B2B (business-to-business) services rather than B2C (business-to-consumer) because businesses have more money to spend. Writing is a top service businesses need, including content writing for SEO and writing for creators.
Sales copywriting involves writing persuasive text for sales pages. It has a clear ROI for businesses, making it easier to sell. The 'Permissionless Apprentice' model is recommended: rewrite a sales page for free and send it to a potential client.
Thumbnail design is a high-demand service for YouTubers. The creator notes that despite millions of views on his videos, only five people have pitched him, and none were good enough. This highlights the need to actually be good at the skill.
Web design is how the creator started. He recommends learning tools like Webflow or Framer and using the Permissionless Apprentice model. An example is given of Henry, who taught himself web design and now charges $10,000 per website.
Short-form video editing is in high demand due to TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts. A successful pitch example is shown where a video editor offered to edit three videos for free, taking on all the risk.
Offer to be a virtual assistant or operations manager for a solopreneur. The example of Elizabeth Phillips is given, who started as a part-time PA and later became a successful YouTuber.
Become a one-person video production agency, offering filming, editing, and storyboarding. There is high demand from businesses for video content, but relatively few good providers.
The creator would personally choose web design, targeting favorite creators and software companies, using the Permissionless Apprentice model to build a portfolio and testimonials.
"The title is accurate; the video genuinely breaks down seven side hustles with the goal of making $1,000/month, and provides realistic assessments for each."

17:53[00:00] in this video I'm going to break down
[00:01] seven different side hustle ideas that
[00:03] you can start this year to the point
[00:04] where you're hopefully making an extra
[00:05] $1,000 a month and for each of them
[00:07] we're going to talk about how easy it is
[00:09] to get started secondly how easy it is
[00:11] to make your first $100 from it and
[00:12] thirdly how much time and effort it
[00:14] takes to keep things going once you've
[00:15] gotten started and then afterwards I'm
[00:16] going to talk about what I would
[00:18] personally be doing if I was say in my
[00:19] early 20s and trying to make some extra
[00:21] money and how I'd be applying these
[00:22] principles to my own life part one the
[00:24] philosophy of side hustles okay so let's
[00:26] start by zooming out a little bit and
[00:27] thinking critically about what we're
[00:29] actually trying to do here so what is a
[00:31] side hustle what is the point of doing
[00:32] the side hustle thing well firstly very
[00:34] few people would say no to an extra
[00:36] $1,000 a month coming in even an extra
[00:38] few hundred a month coming in would be
[00:39] really helpful for a lot of people
[00:41] having more money is generally a good
[00:42] thing because it unlocks autonomy it
[00:43] unlocks Freedom it lets you buy more
[00:45] things if you're interested in that it
[00:46] lets you unlock more experiences and it
[00:48] lets you basically have a little bit
[00:49] more control over your own life so how
[00:51] do you actually make this extra money
[00:52] that you want coming in well one way is
[00:54] to try and get a raise at your day job
[00:55] but we're not going to talk about that
[00:56] cuz this video is about side hustles the
[00:58] other way is of doing a kind of old
[00:59] School side hustle which is actually
[01:01] just called a second job like for
[01:02] example let's say I wanted to make an
[01:03] extra few hundred quid a month I could
[01:05] get a job at the local Kebab shop down
[01:07] the road and that's all well and good
[01:08] because I could be making I don't know
[01:09] £101 an hour or something like that
[01:11] working at the said kbab shop but
[01:12] there's a few issues with me trying to
[01:13] use that as my side hustle or second job
[01:15] firstly there is a cap to how much money
[01:17] I could be getting paid working at the
[01:18] local Kebab shop secondly working at the
[01:20] local Kebab shop is probably not very
[01:21] fun I'm a big fan of Kebabs I love it
[01:23] but even then it would probably become
[01:24] kind of boring after a while and thirdly
[01:26] and most importantly it would tie me
[01:27] into more shift work let's say I've got
[01:29] a day job job and then I'm doing the
[01:30] kbab shifts in the evening I have to
[01:32] show up at a particular time I don't
[01:33] have autonomy over my time and I don't
[01:35] have the flexibility in being able to
[01:36] work when I want and so these factors
[01:38] mean that working at the local Kebab
[01:39] shop I would call less of a side hustle
[01:41] although you can use that terminology if
[01:42] you want I would call it more like a
[01:43] second job so when we say side hustles
[01:45] what do we generally mean by that a
[01:46] decent side hustle should take three
[01:48] boxes firstly it should you it should
[01:49] allow you to make more money than you
[01:51] would be working at a local service job
[01:53] secondly it should be something that you
[01:54] actually enjoy doing where ideally it
[01:56] wouldn't necessarily feel like work it
[01:58] wouldn't feel as if you have a second
[02:00] job that you're toiling away at just to
[02:01] make a little bit of extra cash it would
[02:03] be something that actually fulfills you
[02:04] creatively and thirdly and perhaps most
[02:06] importantly it would be flexible you
[02:08] wouldn't be tied into a certain shift
[02:09] pattern you'd be able to work broadly
[02:11] where you want and when you want now in
[02:13] this video we're going to break down
[02:14] seven different things that you could do
[02:15] that take all three of these boxes but
[02:17] there's one final thing that we need to
[02:18] understand before we go forward and that
[02:19] is the law of making money the law of
[02:21] making money basically says that money
[02:23] is an exchange of value if you want to
[02:25] make money you need to provide value to
[02:27] people who are willing to pay you for
[02:28] said value now this is a mistake that I
[02:29] see a lot of people making all the
[02:30] emails I get from people asking you know
[02:32] how how do I make money on the internet
[02:33] all this kind of stuff but like in order
[02:35] for you to make money someone needs to
[02:37] someone needs to give you that money you
[02:38] can't just make money money just does
[02:40] not grow in trees it doesn't just appear
[02:41] magically in your account someone has to
[02:43] actually want to pay you in order for
[02:44] you to get that money into your account
[02:46] like for example when you buy a $3
[02:47] coffee from Starbucks you are paying
[02:49] Starbucks $3 or whatever it is and then
[02:50] you're getting a coffee in return
[02:52] because you perceive that that value the
[02:54] coffee that you're getting is worth the
[02:55] $3 the $3 is coming out of your personal
[02:57] account and going to Starbucks similarly
[02:59] when you are making money on the
[03:00] internet it's easy to think of the
[03:01] internet as like magical internet money
[03:03] oh if I make a YouTube video I just make
[03:04] money for free but like that money is
[03:06] coming from someone in the case of
[03:07] YouTube it's coming from advertisers and
[03:08] the people that would say that making
[03:09] money is fairly easy are the ones who
[03:11] understand that it's an exchange of
[03:12] value and there's a fairly simple
[03:14] formula for this and if you can
[03:15] understand the formula then you probably
[03:17] hopefully shouldn't really struggle with
[03:19] making money and that formula is firstly
[03:21] you just need to learn a skill or get
[03:23] good at a skill that people are willing
[03:24] to pay for and then secondly you just
[03:26] need to find people who are willing to
[03:27] pay for that skill and so if you can
[03:28] just do those things a skill and then
[03:30] find people who are willing to pay you
[03:31] for the skill then you won't really have
[03:32] a problem with making money and so
[03:34] hopefully you're going to see as we go
[03:35] through the rest of this video that the
[03:36] seven different ideas we're talking
[03:37] about here are all about building a
[03:39] valuable skill and then finding people
[03:40] to pay you for set skill so let's get
[03:42] started side hustle idea number one
[03:44] become a writer for businesses very very
[03:46] broadly there are two types of
[03:47] businesses there's B Toc and there's B2B
[03:49] so b2c is business to Consumer and B2B
[03:52] is business to business basically
[03:53] everything you're familiar with is going
[03:54] to be b2c business to Consumer so for
[03:56] example YouTube is b2c like most mostly
[03:59] it's consumers who are watching YouTube
[04:01] but actually the way YouTube makes money
[04:02] is B2B they're are selling a service to
[04:04] advertisers they're selling to other
[04:06] businesses and it's worth understanding
[04:07] this distinction because by far the
[04:09] easiest way to level up your ability to
[04:11] make money is to start thinking B2B
[04:13] rather than b Toc it's to start thinking
[04:15] what are the services that I can offer
[04:17] to businesses rather than how can I make
[04:19] money from my friends and colleagues
[04:20] because your friends and colleagues
[04:22] probably don't have money to spend it's
[04:23] like if you start imagining like oh what
[04:25] value can I add to my my friend it's
[04:27] like I could become a cleaner for them
[04:28] maybe that's B to see but if you start
[04:30] thinking what value can I add to local
[04:32] businesses or businesses on the internet
[04:34] now it just massively increases the
[04:35] scope of things that you can do to make
[04:36] money on the internet and the first
[04:38] major category of services that you can
[04:39] offer to businesses is writing writing
[04:41] is one of the top things that basically
[04:43] every business in the world is looking
[04:45] for it could be a local business like
[04:46] your local accountant or your local dry
[04:48] cleaner it could be an internet business
[04:50] like software and all this kind of stuff
[04:52] it could be creators like me and other
[04:54] YouTubers it could be authors it could
[04:56] be podcasters like almost every business
[04:57] that you'll ever come across will have a
[04:59] need to hire writers to do some kind of
[05:01] writing now one of the main ones here is
[05:03] content writing so for example
[05:04] businesses will have a Blog often and on
[05:06] that blog they will post articles about
[05:08] their particular industry and they're
[05:09] hoping that by posting enough articles
[05:10] on their website they'll get decent
[05:11] search engine optimization SEO and then
[05:13] more people are going to go on their
[05:15] blog and then they'll stumble across the
[05:16] business and then that will increase the
[05:17] sales or the leads for the business and
[05:19] this is a great Niche to get yourself
[05:20] into because it's very valuable for a
[05:22] business to have someone competent being
[05:23] able to write articles for them B they
[05:25] absolutely recognize the value of this
[05:26] and they will pay for the service and C
[05:28] it means you can just write you can
[05:29] write about topics or businesses or
[05:31] fields that you're genuinely interested
[05:32] in and generally when you're doing
[05:34] something that you have an inherent
[05:35] interest in that you actually enjoy
[05:36] writing about it's going to become way
[05:38] easier and it's going to feel a lot less
[05:39] like work the other major category of
[05:41] people who need writers is any kind of
[05:42] Creator we hire a bunch of people to do
[05:45] research and writing for our videos or
[05:46] for social media or for our website or
[05:48] for our courses and tons and tons of
[05:49] stuff every other creator that I know
[05:51] who's making money who's treating their
[05:52] creator thing like a business also has a
[05:54] massive requirement for writers and so
[05:56] if you want you can make money by
[05:57] working with your favorite creators and
[05:59] helping them right content I know people
[06:01] who charge $1,000 for a single script
[06:03] for a YouTube video so if you can find a
[06:04] creator that needs that kind of service
[06:06] you can make some pretty good money
[06:07] doing that thing there's another mistake
[06:08] that people make here and they think
[06:09] okay cool I'm going to be a writer
[06:10] therefore let me advertise my services
[06:12] on a freelance website like Fiverr or
[06:14] upwork or people per hour or something
[06:16] like that and I would normally say that
[06:17] that's a pretty bad idea because if
[06:18] you're on these freelance websites where
[06:20] there are 50,000 other people offering
[06:22] the same service you're already kind of
[06:24] on the back foot because how is someone
[06:25] going to find you out of these other
[06:26] 50,000 people instead what I'd recommend
[06:28] is what Jack buter called The
[06:30] permissionless Apprentice model so
[06:31] basically you do work for people for
[06:33] free without them asking you to do it
[06:35] and you just then email them and show
[06:37] them the work that you've done and so
[06:38] for example if I was thinking how do I
[06:39] make money as a writer I would basically
[06:41] go to my favorite YouTubers the ones
[06:42] whose content I watch anyway and that
[06:44] certainly doesn't feel like work and I
[06:46] would just write a brand new video for
[06:48] them completely for free that would be a
[06:49] good way for me to a improve my own
[06:51] skills and B boost up my own portfolio
[06:53] and see once I've written a script for
[06:55] them in a Google doc or an otion page or
[06:57] whatever I would send it to them with an
[06:58] accompanying video that says hey I've
[07:00] written this for you completely for free
[07:01] if you like it feel free to use it and
[07:03] if you want more things like this then
[07:05] you know let's let's chat and you know
[07:07] we can talk about working together for
[07:08] the long term and I would do this for a
[07:09] handful of my favorite YouTubers and I
[07:11] can basically guarantee that at least
[07:12] one of them are going to reply assuming
[07:14] my script is good with oh my God this is
[07:16] incredible you've really nailed the
[07:17] script in exactly what my style would be
[07:19] and therefore I want to hire you all
[07:20] right so something like this how easy is
[07:22] it to start and actually especially
[07:23] these days with the Advent of AI
[07:25] artificial intelligence enhanced writing
[07:26] tools it's actually becoming way easier
[07:28] to be a writer than it used to be when
[07:30] you had to type all the words out
[07:31] yourself so often being a decent writer
[07:33] these days is just about being able to
[07:34] use the appropriate AI tools to create
[07:36] your first draft then being able to edit
[07:38] that first draft to see what sounds good
[07:39] and what's in the style of the people
[07:40] that you're trying to work for how easy
[07:42] is it to make your first $100 again I
[07:43] would say it's a little bit harder than
[07:45] just getting started because you have to
[07:46] Now find people to pay you but if you're
[07:48] using this permissionless Apprentice
[07:49] model if you're not trying to stand in
[07:50] the queue of 50,000 people on Fiverr
[07:52] trying to get hired but but you're
[07:54] instead actively reaching out and
[07:55] working for free for people that you
[07:56] actually want to work with I would say
[07:58] probably with a few weeks you probably
[08:00] land your first client and then that'll
[08:01] probably pay more than $100 and now
[08:03] you've made your first $100 and then how
[08:04] much time and effort is it to keep going
[08:06] well the issue with writing is that you
[08:07] are kind of trading your time for money
[08:10] because you do have to do the work of
[08:11] actually writing being to to then get
[08:13] paid for it but actually these days if
[08:14] you use AI tools appropriately then you
[08:16] can probably massively leverage your own
[08:18] ability to write stuff and then also
[08:20] further down the line once you've had
[08:21] experience in writing you can then start
[08:22] creating your own assets you can make
[08:24] your own ebooks or your own courses your
[08:25] own products and now that is a thing
[08:27] that then decorrelates writing from the
[08:29] amount of time you're spending on it and
[08:31] it then becomes a way of leveling up
[08:33] this particular side hustle and maybe
[08:34] making a more of a passive income stream
[08:36] out of this writing stuff side hustle
[08:37] idea number two becoming a sales
[08:39] copywriter basically anytime someone
[08:41] wants to sell something they will have a
[08:42] page that gives you the information
[08:44] about their product for example if you
[08:45] look on Amazon any product will have
[08:47] some copy sales copy some writing that's
[08:49] trying to sell you the product if you
[08:50] look at any online courses or any
[08:52] products on the internet like basically
[08:53] everything will have some level of sales
[08:55] copy associated with it and so if you're
[08:57] looking to make some extra money through
[08:58] a side hustle and you're interested Ed
[08:59] in for example writing and sales and
[09:01] marketing and psychology and persuasion
[09:03] and this kind of stuff you can actually
[09:05] fairly easily and fairly quickly become
[09:06] more of an expert in the field of sales
[09:08] and marketing you could read a few books
[09:10] like Russell brunson's expert Secrets
[09:11] Trilogy you could read Alex homo's $100
[09:14] million offers you could read a book by
[09:15] I think Jim Stevens called copywriting
[09:17] secrets and with a handful of books you
[09:20] would become way more knowledgeable
[09:21] about sales and marketing generally and
[09:24] about copywriting in particular that you
[09:26] probably know way more than any business
[09:28] that's trying to hire you for the
[09:29] service and the nice thing about sales
[09:30] copyrighting is that generally the
[09:32] return on investment for a business is
[09:33] fairly obvious like if someone emailed
[09:35] me and they did the permission as
[09:37] apprentice model and they saw that my
[09:38] parttime YouTuber Academy has a sales
[09:40] page and because of their knowledge of
[09:42] sales and marketing and copywriting they
[09:44] would know that my sales page is under
[09:46] optimized if they were to just send me a
[09:47] Google dog being like hey I'm a sales
[09:49] copywriter I've Rewritten the first half
[09:51] of your landing page for you feel free
[09:52] to use it but I'd love to work with you
[09:54] I would immediately say yes absolutely
[09:56] I'm going to hire this person because
[09:57] for me if I can improve the conversion
[09:59] rate on my sales Page by even 1% that
[10:01] directly translates to bottom line
[10:03] profits and therefore it's a lot easier
[10:04] for me to justify the expense of hiring
[10:06] a sales copywriter for that thing and
[10:08] the thing with all of these things is
[10:09] that once you've got one paying client
[10:10] it's be it becomes a lot easier to land
[10:12] other paying clients because Word of
[10:14] Mouth recommendations in the world of
[10:15] business are just huge and generally if
[10:18] we work with a with a freelancer or
[10:19] someone who's really good then I will
[10:20] know 10 to 20 to 30 other people who
[10:23] need that service and I'd be
[10:24] recommending that freelancer to those
[10:25] other people as well because generally
[10:27] business owners hang out with other
[10:28] business owners big YouTubers hang out
[10:30] with other big YouTubers and generally
[10:32] the problems that one of those has is
[10:33] the same as the problem that all their
[10:35] friends have so really all you have to
[10:36] do is get your foot in the door get your
[10:38] first paying client get a testimonial
[10:39] from them and then word of maath
[10:40] recommendations mean that you probably
[10:42] won't struggle to find clients in the
[10:43] future again assuming you're good all of
[10:46] this has to be on the presupposition
[10:48] that money is an exchange of value and
[10:49] you have to actually be good at the
[10:50] thing so how easy is sales copyrighting
[10:52] to start well it's not that easy you
[10:54] kind of have to be good at the skill
[10:55] which means you do have to do a little
[10:56] bit of reading but hey in about a month
[10:58] you can read all these books that I've
[10:59] mentioned they'll be linked down in the
[11:00] video description and then now all you
[11:02] have to do is do a little bit of
[11:03] practice and you can do that practice
[11:04] permissionless like you don't have to
[11:05] wait for permission for someone to be
[11:07] like hey yes I want you to redesign my
[11:08] landing page you could just do it and
[11:10] you could see if you enjoy it and your
[11:11] skills will just naturally improve over
[11:13] time secondly how easy is it to make
[11:14] your first $100 honestly pretty easy
[11:16] sales copywriting is such a standard
[11:18] it's it's just so easy to reach out to a
[11:20] business and say hey I've improved the
[11:22] copy on your landing page do you want to
[11:23] hire me to improve the the copy on the
[11:24] rest of your website and they'll
[11:25] probably be like hell yeah and now
[11:27] you've landed your first client and then
[11:28] thirdly how time intensive is it to do
[11:30] well actually I think it's less time
[11:31] intensive than content writing because
[11:33] to be honest once you get good at sales
[11:35] copywriting you find that the formula is
[11:38] kind of the same for any sort of
[11:39] business you describe the problem you
[11:40] agitate the problem you provide a
[11:42] solution like there's a a formula that
[11:44] you can read in for example copywriting
[11:45] Secrets the book and if you follow that
[11:47] formula you can often copy and paste
[11:49] things between different clients and you
[11:50] just become better at the skill over
[11:51] time so you know your 10th and 20th
[11:54] client will take a lot less time than
[11:55] your first or second client so broadly I
[11:57] would say it's not too bad in terms of
[11:59] ongoing time and effort side hustle idea
[12:01] number three become a thumbnail designer
[12:03] so we're now talking about design as a
[12:05] service we've talked about writing as a
[12:06] service now it's design as a service and
[12:08] one very easy design as a service that
[12:10] every single YouTuber needs is a
[12:11] thumbnail designer as YouTubers we know
[12:14] how important thumbnails are and so if
[12:16] you can actually get good at the skill
[12:17] of making thumbnails which is again not
[12:19] too hard you just follow some tutorials
[12:20] on the internet about how to use
[12:21] Photoshop and over time you'll develop
[12:23] an eye for what decent thumbnails look
[12:25] like then again you can follow The
[12:27] permissionless Apprentice model and then
[12:28] you can email them and say hey I really
[12:29] enjoy your work I've been watching your
[12:30] channel for a very long time I'm I'm I'm
[12:32] a thumbnail designer so I thought I'd
[12:34] redesign some of your thumbnails for you
[12:35] feel free to use them if you'd like and
[12:37] if you'd like to hire me if you like
[12:38] what I've done and you'd like to hire me
[12:39] then do please get back to me and we can
[12:41] talk I have actually mentioned this
[12:42] point in a couple of videos in the past
[12:43] and I have had maybe five people out of
[12:46] the 3 million people or 15 million
[12:48] people that have watched these videos
[12:49] I've had about five people email me with
[12:51] being like hey I would love to be your
[12:52] thumbnail designer here here are a few
[12:54] thumbnails unfortunately all five of
[12:55] those have just like the thumbnails have
[12:57] not been very good and we've AB tested
[12:59] them uh and they just haven't performed
[13:01] as well as thumbnails that I could make
[13:02] myself but there like five people out of
[13:03] several million people who watched the
[13:05] videos and I'm literally saying anyone
[13:07] can email me and redesign my thumbnails
[13:08] and I will literally hire you if your
[13:10] thumbnails are good only five people
[13:11] have done it and none of them have been
[13:12] good so again this is the thing of like
[13:14] exchange of exchange of value you have
[13:16] to actually be good at the thing that
[13:17] you're trying to do but the way you get
[13:18] better at the thing you're trying to do
[13:19] is by just doing lots of it doing it
[13:21] permissionless and then over time you
[13:22] can iterate and get better at this
[13:24] graphic design stuff so how easy is it
[13:26] to get started with this well I say it's
[13:27] kind of hard because you have to learn
[13:29] graphic design and you have to have an
[13:31] eye for kind of Aesthetics and taste and
[13:33] just be familiar with YouTube but if
[13:35] you're the sort of person who watches a
[13:36] lot of YouTube videos which I hope you
[13:37] are if you you gotten to this point in
[13:38] this video then maybe you'll just have
[13:40] more of a an inbuilt appreciation of
[13:42] thumbnail Aesthetics than other people
[13:44] do secondly how easy is it to make your
[13:45] first $100 well honestly if it were me I
[13:47] would pay2 200 to £250 GDP for a decent
[13:51] thumbnail for one of for one of my
[13:52] videos I know someone who pays $11,000
[13:55] for a thumbnail for one of his videos
[13:57] you know the lowest I've seen people pay
[13:58] for thumbnail is like 30 4050 which is
[14:00] again quite a lot considering that it
[14:02] sometimes only takes maybe 20 minutes or
[14:04] half an hour of work to create a
[14:05] thumbnail and especially if you're from
[14:07] a country where the kind of purchase
[14:09] price parity is very different to the
[14:10] GBP then that's a lot of money that you
[14:12] can make for a very small amount of work
[14:14] again provided you're actually good at
[14:15] the thing and then thirdly how much time
[14:16] and effort does this take to keep going
[14:18] I would say actually a moderate amount
[14:20] you do have to make the thumbnails
[14:21] specific for every video but over time
[14:23] as you work with specific clients you
[14:25] you kind of get an idea of their style
[14:27] like the thumbnail designer who works
[14:28] with me now it takes it it doesn't take
[14:30] very long for him to make the thumbnails
[14:32] for the videos because we kind of have a
[14:33] house style it's usually a smiling photo
[14:35] of me and then there's usually some
[14:37] icons and maybe some text and that
[14:38] actually maybe takes like 10 20 minutes
[14:40] to put together whereas initially it
[14:41] would have taken maybe several hours if
[14:43] you were trying to design thumbnails
[14:44] completely from scratch for every single
[14:46] client so and a moderate amount of
[14:47] effort over time side hustle idea number
[14:49] four become a website designer now being
[14:51] a website designer is actually how I got
[14:53] my own start when it came to making
[14:54] money online as a side hustle I was 13
[14:56] years old I was in school but in the
[14:57] evenings and on the weekends I'd be
[14:59] doing freelance web design for random
[15:01] small businesses that would meet on some
[15:02] freelance website and this was how I
[15:04] made my first kind of several hundred on
[15:05] the internet and again this is thing of
[15:07] that there are thousands and thousands
[15:08] of web designers out there it's just
[15:10] that a they're either not very good or B
[15:12] just bad at marketing the services to
[15:13] the right people in the right format
[15:15] like if you go to Fiverr you'll see
[15:16] 10,000 examples of web designers but
[15:19] that's again like if you're if you're on
[15:21] Fiverr trying to sell your services
[15:22] you're probably doing it wrong and
[15:23] instead if you follow The permissionless
[15:25] Apprentice model and interact with
[15:26] people on Twitter and on LinkedIn and
[15:28] these platforms where people people who
[15:29] have money are congregating and are
[15:31] willing to pay money for services you'll
[15:33] generally have a much better time of
[15:34] trying to land work now one of the guys
[15:35] that we work with for our website is
[15:37] called Henry and in the pandemic within
[15:39] about 6 months he taught himself how to
[15:41] design websites and he built his own
[15:43] personal website that looked absolutely
[15:44] amazing it looked like the like one of
[15:46] the sales Pages for an Apple product and
[15:48] so he reached out to us and said that
[15:49] hey he likes he likes the stuff he would
[15:50] like to do some web design for us and I
[15:52] looked at his website and I was
[15:53] immediately blown away I was like oh my
[15:54] God this guy clearly knows what he's
[15:56] doing of course I want to hire him
[15:58] because again every business every
[15:59] Creator who has a website every business
[16:01] under the sun will always be thinking
[16:03] about how do I improve my website
[16:04] because they know that their website is
[16:06] really important for their business
[16:07] branding and for landing sales for their
[16:09] products and so we hired Henry and now
[16:10] we've paid him several I think over 10K
[16:12] plus over the last like year to help
[16:14] redesign some of our websites like he
[16:15] previously had a job he didn't enjoy the
[16:17] job very much and he decided you know
[16:18] what I'm interested in design I like the
[16:20] idea of making websites I'm just going
[16:21] to teach myself and through just tap
[16:23] watching YouTube videos and taking a
[16:24] couple of courses online he taught
[16:25] himself web design to the point that he
[16:27] can now charge $10,000 for every website
[16:29] he makes for a client if you don't know
[16:30] how to make a website I have a video
[16:31] about it linked over here somewhere so
[16:33] how easy is this to start I would say
[16:35] it's pretty easy to start because it's
[16:37] not that hard learning how to design a
[16:38] website all you have to do is decide is
[16:40] this the thing you want to do and then
[16:42] watch a few YouTube tutorials and then
[16:43] practice then build up your portfolio
[16:45] over time how easy is it to make your
[16:46] first $100 again not overly hard again
[16:49] if you follow The permissionless
[16:50] Apprentice model if you're not trying to
[16:51] queue up with 50,000 other people on
[16:53] Fiverr and and you're instead actively
[16:54] reaching out to companies or creators or
[16:57] businesses that you like and doing a
[16:59] little bit of a free design for their
[17:00] homepage initially and saying hey this
[17:02] is what your website could look like I'm
[17:04] a web designer I'd love to work with you
[17:05] you know let's hop on a call and talk
[17:07] about it it shouldn't be too hard to
[17:08] land your first client and then thirdly
[17:10] how much time and effort does this take
[17:11] to maintain over time again it takes a
[17:13] lot of time and effort initially as you
[17:15] start doing the thing but then you know
[17:16] there are plenty of people I know who
[17:18] just do freelance web design by
[17:19] designing sites on WordPress and once
[17:21] you've made one or two sites you can
[17:22] often copy and paste the settings and
[17:24] the appearance and the theme on any
[17:26] other side that you use and just tweak a
[17:27] few little bits of it side Hustle idea
[17:29] number five become a short form video
[17:31] editor we've talked about writing we've
[17:32] talked about design the other major
[17:34] thing that basically every business
[17:35] Under the Sun is now looking at is video
[17:37] and in particular short form video with
[17:40] the whole Tik Tok thing with the whole
[17:41] Instagram reals thing with the whole
[17:42] YouTube shorts thing basically every
[17:44] business that I know are trying to get
[17:45] into video production and video making
[17:47] because they know that that's a way for
[17:48] them to generate more organic traffic
[17:50] for their business now I want to show an
[17:51] example here of a Twitter DM that this
[17:53] guy Juan Gomez sent to my friend Dicky
[17:55] Bush who runs a ship 30 for 30 this guy
[17:56] says I spent about 20 minutes crafting a
[17:58] DM I wanted to demonstrate competence
[18:00] and relatability I wanted to make sure I
[18:02] took on all the risk not Dicky and
[18:03] here's the DM I sent hey Dicky I saw
[18:05] your YouTube thread and was super
[18:06] encouraged by your approach love the
[18:07] fact that you're building in public I've
[18:09] been receiving tremendous value from
[18:10] your content and would want to return
[18:11] the favor in some way if you're ever in
[18:12] need of a video editor shoot me a
[18:14] message I've worked as a video
[18:15] videographer editor for 2 years and have
[18:16] over 200 videos of experience I really
[18:18] connect with the topics you talk about
[18:20] and would love to help you grow your
[18:21] channel offer I edit your next three
[18:23] videos for free and you decide if you
[18:24] want to work with me or not let me know
[18:25] if this is something you'd find
[18:26] interesting cheers now this guy from
[18:28] sending this DM and from like taking on
[18:30] all the risk himself and offering to do
[18:31] these next three videos completely for
[18:33] free not quite following the permission
[18:34] as apprentice model in that he didn't do
[18:36] the work up front he asked dick if he
[18:37] wanted the work done because he would
[18:38] need to send him the raw files to to
[18:40] edit he ended up Landing a job with this
[18:42] very high paying client whose work he
[18:44] enjoyed where doing the video editing
[18:45] for Dicky Bush doesn't actually feel
[18:46] like work to one and I think a DM like
[18:48] this is something that so many people
[18:49] could learn from again I get a handful
[18:51] of emails every single day from people
[18:53] pitching me on Services none of them are
[18:55] like demonstrate the competence and the
[18:57] relatability and the reliability of
[18:58] message like the one that Juan sent to
[19:00] Dicky and I think that's a shame because
[19:01] clearly there are all these people out
[19:02] there that want to make money that they
[19:03] want to do creative stuff that gives
[19:04] them flexibility and autonomy but they
[19:06] don't realize like how to sell the
[19:08] service it's like you could be really
[19:09] good at video editing but if you suck at
[19:11] being able to communicate that value
[19:12] proposition to someone else who's
[19:13] willing to pay you for that service then
[19:15] you're never going to land the work in
[19:16] the first place so how easy is this to
[19:18] start well you actually have to learn
[19:19] video editing it's not that hard you can
[19:21] take my own skillshare class on how to
[19:22] edit videos it's free link down below if
[19:24] you want to check it out and in a
[19:25] weekend you can learn how to edit videos
[19:26] to a reasonable standard secondly how
[19:28] easy is it to make your first $100 again
[19:30] I don't think it's very hard at all I
[19:31] think if you have just an a reasonable
[19:33] amount of communication skills and a for
[19:36] some sort of portfolio and some ability
[19:38] to actively reach out to the people that
[19:39] might be hiring you it's really easy to
[19:41] make your first $100 again if you're
[19:42] trying to stick yourself on Fiverr and
[19:44] then kind of compete with 50,000 other
[19:45] people for video editing it'll be really
[19:47] hard to make your first $100 but if you
[19:48] do it right if you connect with the
[19:50] appropriate people on Twitter and
[19:51] Linkedin and email rather than trying to
[19:53] go in freelance marketplaces it'll be
[19:55] super super easy as a video editor to
[19:56] make your first $100 and then how much
[19:58] effort does it take to keep going well
[20:00] unfortunately quite a lot video editing
[20:01] is one of those things that it does take
[20:02] a large amount of time and as you get
[20:04] better at it and as you develop assets
[20:06] and Transitions and templates and stuff
[20:08] you can get a little bit faster at it
[20:10] but it is fundamentally a thing that
[20:11] requires work and so if you really
[20:13] wanted to level up this particular side
[20:14] hustle you could then form a sort of
[20:16] agency model you could hire other video
[20:18] editors underneath you like Junior
[20:19] editors who would do the initial cuts
[20:21] and that kind of stuff and then you
[20:22] could be the person doing the Final Cut
[20:24] and presenting that to the client and
[20:25] now you're kind of building your own
[20:26] agency which is a different sort of way
[20:28] of doing a Hustle but something we're
[20:29] going to be talking about in future
[20:30] videos now once you've used all these
[20:31] side hustles to make this extra money
[20:33] you're probably going to want to invest
[20:34] s money and that brings us to the
[20:36] sponsor of this video which is trading
[20:37] 212 trading 212 is a fantastic app that
[20:40] lets you trade completely for free in
[20:41] terms of stocks and shares and foreign
[20:43] exchange and ETFs now what's great about
[20:45] trading 212 is that they've got a
[20:46] practice mode and a real money mode the
[20:48] practice mode lets you invest like fake
[20:50] money in the markets so the markets are
[20:52] actually what's happening in real life
[20:53] but you're not investing any real money
[20:55] you're just sort of investing pretend
[20:56] money so if you're new to the world of
[20:57] investing and you feel it's a little bit
[20:59] daunting to play with real money then
[21:00] you can absolutely try it out in
[21:01] practice mode and then once you're ready
[21:02] it's super easy to deposit money into
[21:04] the account using Apple pay or using a
[21:05] credit card or using what I use which is
[21:07] a secure connection to my bank directly
[21:09] so with one tap I can just deposit funds
[21:10] into my trading 212 account and because
[21:12] they allow you to invest in ETFs
[21:13] exchange traded funds like the S&P 500
[21:16] it means you don't necessarily even need
[21:17] to pick individual stocks which is
[21:19] generally something that I usually
[21:20] Advocate against you can just invest in
[21:22] these broad market index funds and I've
[21:24] got a whole video on exactly how that
[21:25] works if you want to check it out to
[21:26] learn a bit more they've also got some
[21:27] pretty cool Auto investing features so
[21:29] if for example you don't want to invest
[21:31] in lump sums which is generally what I
[21:32] do you can instead invest a certain
[21:34] amount of money every month or every
[21:35] week and you can automatically insert
[21:37] that into different pies so for example
[21:39] you could have half your portfolio as
[21:40] the S&P 500 and maybe you could have the
[21:42] other half of your portfolio being the
[21:43] Vanguard all World Index Fund now
[21:45] obviously as with all Investments your
[21:47] capital is a risk and while your
[21:48] Investments can rise they also might
[21:50] fall and so depending on when you
[21:51] withdraw money or depending on how you
[21:52] play the markets as it were you might
[21:54] well get back less than you invested but
[21:56] hopefully if you follow the strategies
[21:58] and invest in Broad market index funds
[22:00] using an app that's very secure that's
[22:01] very legit and that's easy to use then
[22:03] hopefully we'll over time get to a
[22:05] decent result also if you're based in
[22:07] the UK you can open your Isa with
[22:08] trading 212 the individual savings
[22:10] account which allows you to invest
[22:11] £20,000 a year completely taxfree in
[22:13] this wrapper and within the ISA you can
[22:15] then invest in whatever index funds or
[22:17] ETFs or stocks and shares if you're
[22:18] choosing to do stock picking that you
[22:19] like Anyway if you want to check it out
[22:20] then all you have to do is download the
[22:22] trading 212 app and you can get that on
[22:24] iOS and also on Android and they've also
[22:26] got a web app as well and if you use the
[22:27] coupon code Ali a checkout that will
[22:29] give you a free share that's worth up to
[22:31] £100 side hustle idea number six become
[22:34] a solopreneurs second pair of hands all
[22:36] right so this is quite a fun one this is
[22:38] not quite a creative skill but again
[22:40] generally if you if you know that there
[22:41] are people out there who you would like
[22:43] to work for let's say you follow
[22:44] YouTubers or streamers or businesses or
[22:46] whatever you can send them an email and
[22:48] offer to be their second pair of hands
[22:50] sort of a cross between an operations
[22:51] manager and a personal assistant so
[22:53] James CLE for example who is the
[22:54] ridiculously bestselling author of
[22:56] atomic habits which you might have read
[22:57] only has one other person on his team
[22:59] and this person is his right-and man who
[23:00] does all of the stuff sort of like a
[23:02] personal assistant/ virtual assistant/
[23:04] helping him with all the content he
[23:05] wants to make and like helping him book
[23:07] his like conferences and going through
[23:09] his emails and for that person working
[23:11] in that role they get to work with James
[23:13] clar and that's like a pretty cool place
[23:14] to be and they get to be basically
[23:16] running the operations of this
[23:17] multi-million dollar business that he's
[23:19] got going on with a small team of two
[23:20] people and that's pretty fun it could
[23:22] start off as a part-time side hustle and
[23:23] then it could absolutely become a
[23:24] full-time thing if you're into that kind
[23:26] of stuff similarly you might be familiar
[23:27] with Elizabeth Phillips who used to be
[23:29] my part-time personal assistant for like
[23:31] you know a few hours a week and that was
[23:32] how she got into this world of content
[23:34] creation and stuff and then by virtue of
[23:36] being my part-time personal assistant
[23:37] for a few hours a week she realized that
[23:39] oh this YouTube stuff is a thing and she
[23:40] helped out with our YouTuber Academy and
[23:42] now she's like you know massive YouTuber
[23:44] several 100,000 subscribers making loads
[23:45] of money through that and really doing
[23:46] this sort of personal assistant
[23:48] operations manager side hustle part-time
[23:50] thing can unlock a lot of interesting
[23:51] opportunities further down the line that
[23:53] you just wouldn't even have realized
[23:54] even existed if you hadn't done the
[23:55] thing right so how easy is this to get
[23:57] started honestly I think it's super easy
[23:58] again all you have to do is have the
[24:00] appropriate amount of communication
[24:01] skills to be able to email or DM someone
[24:03] and take on all the risk yourself the
[24:05] thing that Elizabeth did which was
[24:06] really good when she initially reached
[24:07] out to me on Instagram was hey I'll be
[24:09] I'll be your part-time PA for a month
[24:10] personal assistant for a month you don't
[24:12] even have to pay me and we'll just see
[24:14] if it works out I ended up being like no
[24:15] I'm going to pay you anyway cuz I felt
[24:16] bad but if you can take if you can
[24:18] demonstrate taking on all the risk
[24:20] yourself it becomes very easy for the
[24:21] person hiring you on the other end to
[24:23] say yes to that without having to think
[24:24] too hard about it secondly how easy is
[24:26] it to make your first $100 again prettyy
[24:28] once you found the right client and
[24:30] you've actually reached out to them and
[24:31] you've gotten your foot in the door and
[24:33] you you're then demonstrating that you
[24:34] can add value to their stuff then it's
[24:36] pretty easy to make your first $100 but
[24:38] unfortunately this is quite a Time
[24:39] intensive job usually personal
[24:41] assistants and stuff are paid by the
[24:42] hour rather than by outcome and so
[24:44] you're always kind of tied to a
[24:45] particular hourly return on your time
[24:47] but hopefully what will happen is that
[24:48] as you become more and more valuable to
[24:49] the business that you're working with or
[24:50] working for then they might bring you on
[24:52] as a full-time employee or as someone on
[24:53] a retainer and now maybe you've even got
[24:55] the option of quitting your day job
[24:56] because this pays better and it's way
[24:57] more fun and gives you way more
[24:58] flexibility SLE idea number seven onean
[25:01] video production agency so we've talked
[25:03] about how basically every business is
[25:04] looking to get into video and we talked
[25:06] about being an editor for short form
[25:07] content on YouTube shorts and Instagram
[25:08] reals and Tik Tok but actually relatedly
[25:10] every business is looking for video
[25:12] whether it's the local accountant or the
[25:13] local orthodontist or the local plumber
[25:15] or if it's like a software product or if
[25:16] it's a Creator everyone is looking to
[25:18] make more videos and so if you can as a
[25:20] side hustle be a sort of oneman media
[25:22] agency oneman content video production
[25:24] machine you can offer a really valuable
[25:26] service for businesses and it's also
[25:28] kind kind of fun doing that for example
[25:29] Gordon the videographer that we work
[25:30] with used to be a freelance videographer
[25:32] and sort of did this thing for several
[25:35] years where initially he would find
[25:36] clients in the health and fitness space
[25:38] because he was inherently interested in
[25:39] that he'd make videos in that space
[25:40] completely for free and then he started
[25:42] Landing paid clients and then he was
[25:43] being flown to all these like
[25:45] ridiculously cool kind of world
[25:46] championship bodybuilding and
[25:47] powerlifting competitions and he was
[25:50] doing the video production the
[25:51] videography the editing the
[25:52] storyboarding and everything for these
[25:54] clients and he turned himself into this
[25:56] oneman media Powerhouse which has meant
[25:58] that he unlocked tons and tons of
[26:00] opportunities for working with really
[26:01] cool people and traveling around the
[26:02] world and actually doing it with some
[26:03] amount of flexibility and autonomy you
[26:05] could reach out to software products
[26:06] that you like that maybe don't have
[26:08] compelling videos on their YouTube
[26:09] channel and you could offer to make
[26:10] YouTube videos for that software company
[26:12] and they'd probably say hell yes because
[26:13] software companies have a lot of money
[26:15] and they know that they can land more
[26:16] organic traffic to their product through
[26:18] video and so if you can become their
[26:20] YouTube Channel producer and help make
[26:21] videos about their app now that's a
[26:23] super easy way of making money as well
[26:25] and there's tens if not hundreds of
[26:26] thousands of these software companies
[26:27] that have enough money that have really
[26:29] high margins that don't do video that
[26:31] would love to do video where there's
[26:32] such a huge gap between where they want
[26:34] to be and where they currently are where
[26:35] all you have to do to bridge that Gap is
[26:37] just learn the skill of doing video
[26:39] learn how a camera Works learn how to
[26:40] take videos with your phone learn video
[26:41] editing by following my skillshare class
[26:43] whatever you like that's like video is
[26:45] such a massively underrated service
[26:47] these days where there's so many
[26:48] businesses that want it and there are
[26:50] relatively so few people that can offer
[26:51] that service maybe this will change 10
[26:53] years from now but right now there's
[26:55] it's we're in an incredible era where
[26:57] there's just so much demand for for this
[26:58] thing and not enough supply of it I know
[27:00] a bunch of people who have who are
[27:01] making side hustle and also full-time
[27:03] income money as video editors and video
[27:05] producers and videographers and they
[27:07] keep on getting more and more and more
[27:08] clients to the point where they don't
[27:10] have enough capacity to actually do the
[27:11] work and they're trying to find other
[27:12] people but they always say it's really
[27:14] hard to find a good editor it's really
[27:15] hard to find a videographer who's
[27:16] actually good how easy is it to get
[27:18] started by being this onean media
[27:19] production agency again not very hard
[27:22] you can start by filming videos on your
[27:23] phone you can start by reaching out to
[27:24] local businesses and you can use those
[27:26] as free examples to P your skills and
[27:29] also get better at the act of kind of
[27:30] selling your services how easy is it to
[27:32] make your first $100 again not that hard
[27:34] because generally if you're targeting a
[27:35] local business and they have money which
[27:37] almost by definition they do because
[27:38] they are a local business they will
[27:40] generally see the value of having decent
[27:42] videos on their YouTube channel or on
[27:43] the Instagram page or on their Facebook
[27:45] page or on their website or whatever but
[27:46] it does take a reasonable amount of time
[27:48] and effort to continue with this sort of
[27:49] thing but again you know if you're
[27:50] interested and if this becomes something
[27:52] that you do over the long term you can
[27:53] turn it into an agency model if you
[27:55] really want so those were seven
[27:56] different side hustle ideas I'm just
[27:58] going to share what I would personally
[27:59] do if I was in my let's say early 20s
[28:01] and I was trying to make money for me I
[28:03] would go down probably the web designer
[28:05] route because I was always inherently
[28:06] interested in that I kind of did it when
[28:08] I was young a little bit I'm I'm kind of
[28:10] out of date with the latest kind of
[28:11] tools and processes and how to use web
[28:12] flow and frameware and stuff but it
[28:14] wouldn't be too hard for me to learn to
[28:16] teach myself web design to be able to
[28:17] use these tools and then I would reach
[28:19] out to all of my favorite creators
[28:21] firstly and all of my favorite software
[28:22] companies and apps that I use on my
[28:24] phone and any who don't have a good
[28:27] website I would say I would would offer
[28:28] to make them a website and I'd offer to
[28:30] make the first few pages for free and
[28:32] then I'd get testimonials and then I'd
[28:33] be using that permission as apprentice
[28:34] model to then be able to find other
[28:36] people who are willing to pay me for my
[28:38] service and I'm pretty confident that
[28:39] I'd be able to fairly easily make six
[28:41] figures a year from just doing web
[28:42] design by virtue of finding the right
[28:44] people and by virtue of being good at
[28:46] the skill all right so hopefully this
[28:47] video has given you a few ideas on what
[28:48] you can do to make side hustle income
[28:50] online maybe get to this $1,000 a month
[28:52] point which could be quite fun but if
[28:54] you're interested in potentially
[28:55] becoming a digital Nomad and making this
[28:56] more of a full-time thing then might
[28:58] like to check out this video over here
[28:59] which is my guide to how to make money
[29:01] online to get to the point where you're
[29:02] making $3,000 a month and you've got fun
[29:04] freedom and flexibility to be able to do
[29:06] it on your own terms so so check out
[29:07] that video if you like thank you so much
[29:08] for watching and I'll see you in the
[29:09] next video
