The F1's Secret Switch Story
45sThe hilarious story about the hidden secret switch that disabled the McLaren F1, shared by Jay Leno, is a captivating and relatable anecdote for car enthusiasts.
▶ Play Clip"Delivers exactly what the title promises: a detailed comparison and drive of the T.50, F1, and P1, with genuine insights and stories."
Jay Leno and a fellow collector compare three legendary Gordon Murray-inspired supercars: the McLaren F1, the McLaren P1, and the new Gordon Murray Automotive T.50. The video features detailed discussions on design philosophy, engineering quirks, and driving experiences, culminating in a test drive of the T.50.
Jay Leno introduces the three cars: the McLaren F1, the McLaren P1, and the GMA T.50, all inspired by Gordon Murray. He owns the F1 and P1, while his friend owns the T.50.
The F1 is the oldest car, weighing 2500 lbs. Gordon Murray's obsession with lightweight is highlighted by the Kenwood stereo magnet made from aluminum sprayed with iron filings to save 8 ounces.
Jay bought the F1 for $800,000 in 1994, a crazy amount then, especially after disappointing cars like the Jaguar XJ220 and Vector. He called McLaren and negotiated the price, eventually buying it from salesman Harold Dermot.
The F1 is still the fastest naturally aspirated car in the world at 241 mph. It lacks traction control and ABS, making it a raw driving experience, as Jay discovered when he got wheel spin on the freeway.
A humorous story about a hidden switch in the F1 that disables the car, which Harold Dermot forgot to mention, causing Jay to spend four hours troubleshooting with alligator clips.
The F1 is described as revolutionary, not evolutionary, winning Le Mans overall as a road car. It was the first car with a carbon fiber cabin and could connect to the factory for tuning.
The P1, inspired by Gordon Murray but not directly designed by him, has traction control and ABS. It's a hybrid with 903 horsepower and is Jay's favorite car to drive for its light, airy feel and best-in-class steering.
The P1 is a hybrid that must be kept plugged in to maintain battery health. Jay has had his for 10 years with no problems, and the battery is still at 92% because it's always receiving electrons.
The T.50 is Gordon Murray's latest masterpiece, featuring a fan car system inspired by his 1970s and 1980s designs. The fan is functional and has four modes: GT, High Downforce, Streamline, and V-Max.
The T.50 has a 4.0-liter V12 built by Cosworth, with a 12,100 RPM redline. It produces just under 700 horsepower, but its weight-to-power ratio is key. It's lighter than the F1 despite modern safety features.
The T.50 drives fundamentally like the F1 but better: better brakes, acceleration, and handling. It's evolutionary, not revolutionary, like an electric toothbrush compared to a manual one.
The T.50 has max torque around 9,000 rpm, with 70% available from 3,000 rpm. It sounds fantastic, and the fun is between 40 and 90 mph, not at extreme speeds.
Jay concludes that only Gordon Murray could build the successor to the F1, comparing it to Coppola directing Godfather 2. The T.50 gets its credibility from Gordon's legacy.

Gordon Murray's Lightweight Fanaticism
The aluminum magnet story illustrates Gordon Murray's extreme obsession with weight reduction, saving just 8 ounces.
03:18F1 as a Revolutionary Road Car
The F1's Le Mans overall win as a road car is a unique achievement that may never be repeated.
11:44Last Naturally Aspirated V12
The T.50's engine is likely the last normally aspirated V12, marking the end of an era in automotive engineering.
20:16T.50 is Evolutionary, Not Revolutionary
Jay's comparison of the T.50 to an electric toothbrush highlights how it refines the F1 formula rather than reinventing it.
26:01Only Gordon Could Build the Successor
The Godfather 2 analogy underscores the importance of the original creator's vision in maintaining a legacy.
31:58[00:12] smiling. >> You know, it really is fabulous. one. It just drives better. >> It breaks better. It accelerates faster. does better. >> Well, enough of the sounds like this.
[00:29] it, but you can't. >> That's right. It sounds like it's over revving. You know, a screaming engine, >> you know, boy, this is a thrill of a lifetime. It really is great. You know, anytime you want to leave this at the
[00:43] >> You're a good friend. >> Yeah. YEAH. >> Yeah. YEAH. [screaming] Jay Lynn's Garage. This is my interpretation of the Holy Trinity.
[00:56] interpretation of the Holy Trinity. three cars inspired by Gordon Murray. It cost the legendary F1, then it cost the equally legendary P1 and the brand new T50. This is Gordon's latest effort and uh just getting rave reviews around the
[01:11] country, around the world, actually. And we're going to drive it today. All these mine. I own two of them. I have an F1, I have a P1. I don't have a T50. Uh my friend. We bonded over. Hey, is your McLaren ready yet? No. You know,
[01:27] [laughter] I I heard he I called him up once because there's only 63 of us in that's right. So we we kind of bond together to know one another and it's for a couple of months as I remember. Remember?
[01:40] >> That's right. Yeah. Yeah. That's right. like yours? And and then we we got to talk. So it's kind of fun. And you're the you're the first guy, at least I know in the States to have the T50. But
[01:54] let's just kind of compare the three of them because I don't think any of these cars would exist without Gordon Murray. I mean, the P1 takes a lot of cues from the F1. Although Gordon was not directly involved in the P1, I think his ethos,
[02:09] as you might call it, overflows in this car. I mean, it really basically the same thing. Well, let's start with the F1. Now, this one is a 95. Correct. >> So, this is the oldest car here by a wide margin, but it still looks
[02:22] with a design tomorrow, I don't think anybody go that looks cuz somebody you see styling cues from the 80s and the '9s with a lot of cars. If you come out with a car look like the 86 Countach, you'll go how old is that? You know,
[02:36] that I agree. >> It it just that Peter Stevens did a wonderful job designing this car. You forget how old this car is cuz people would say to me, "How come he didn't get the carbon fiber brakes?" Well, they
[02:49] they hadn't come out yet. It might have been invented, but nobody had them on a car yet. You know, you can take this back to the factory and do that, and I guess they'll do it for you. But I It's fun just to drive it as it
[03:01] is. >> This car is car weighs about the same as >> 2500 lb. >> Yeah. 2500 lb, which is pretty amazing. >> Uh and Gordon is such a fanatic for lightweight. Even the the Kenwood uh
[03:18] magnet. Now, there's no such thing as than than iron, >> right? >> So, he took aluminum, the same shape as the iron, sprayed it with iron filings
[03:31] just to get enough >> magnetism to to run and save 8 ounces. I mean, that's that that's kind of where you are with this car. You know, that was sort of the problem with the SLR because when the SLR came out, little
[03:44] too much Mercedes, not enough McLaren. You had the electric seat, which you know, you're moving your butt when you get it. And when you sell it to the next guy, you don't you why do you need electric motor? That was Gordon's thing.
[03:56] And and and welld deserved, but Mercedes has to have certain things people expect from, you know, so that was they were kind of button heads all the time with >> All the time. That's right. We met because you owe I found out you were an
[04:08] >> right? >> And we commiserated, you know, >> because we both dealt with uh the salesman Harold Der. >> Yep. Harold Dermont. Yep. Nice guy. >> And the most English guy.
[04:20] >> You can imagine, you know, most understated. Well, hardly. That's it. Oh, you might wait a year. You know, everything was sort of because you paid the same as I did. I think it was $800,000,
[04:33] $800,000, >> which is crazy money back in 94. You know, I saw a thing on 60 Minutes Marley Ser went to the Lamborghini factory for the car, it's not. They're all sold out." And by the way, they cost $100,000
[04:49] know and that was a lot of money because the Jaguar 220 and the Vector had come out and both of those were hugely disappointing and they were a couple of hundred,000. Jaguar was supposed to have a 12 then had its V6. The Vector was
[05:03] going to be the most powerful and just had a Toronto engine and drive. So, and had a Toronto engine and drive. So, and those were 250 200,000 maybe 300,000. Suddenly a car comes along that's a almost a million. Well, how if those two
[05:17] how could this and that's I think plus it was a bit of a recession and people just didn't know the company they'd never heard of and the company folded and by that time all the magazine reviews that come out were people just
[05:30] raving about it and oh what then we all scurry to try and find one. So I I called McLaren. They said we have one here. Uh we want 800,000. I go, "What's it cost new?" You know, I said, "Well, no, we think they're going to go up."
[05:43] All right. Okay. Finally figured, "All right." I said, "I tell you what, if you it." That was my thing. I kept hoping they'd sell it. So, everybody said, ridiculous spend on a car." And it is. But then I called Harold. He goes,
[05:59] "Hasn't sold yet. We have someone coming in today." All right, fine. and I'll take the car. You know, he does the old salesman, you know. So, so I bought it and I I never regretted it. No. >> And it it's it's it's the smartest
[06:11] purchase and the best investment I ever made in my life. If I'd spent that on successful. >> No, I guess if you picked Apple or >> Right. Right. Right. Now, how did you come to hear about it?
[06:25] Well, I was one day I was I was in London on business and I was walking down Park Lane and uh >> there was a uh a tiny little maybe 25 foot wide showroom >> and uh there was a McLaren F1 silver one
[06:41] right front and center in that in that glass and I was startled by it because it had such a a different look a whole well it was this car you know a road car well it was this car you know a road car and this was about 19 had to be 93 94
[06:56] >> right >> and became fascinated by it >> but when I found the price you know I thought well I you know I'm have to hold thought well I you know I'm have to hold this for a while and uh I did well and
[07:08] wound up coming back around uh through that very same little showroom fell named David Clark I think was his name and he brokered a deal uh for me to buy one of Manser OJ's cars and Manser OJ was one of the three big dogs at
[07:24] >> Right. Right. >> You know, it was Ron Dennis and Gordon >> Right. >> They had come up with the idea to create a road car. >> Ron Dennis had the organization. Gordon
[07:38] road race car, >> right? >> right? >> And so the three of them made beautiful >> And so the three of them made beautiful music together, produced the car, and uh
[07:50] it was startling. I mean, just it was way out of way out of the bounds of of >> And so I'd fallen in love with it early on. >> And when I finally got to scrape the money together, u as you said, it was
[08:04] >> I mean, no. >> See, that's what I love about England. [laughter] >> That's true. >> And when they sell that, they move on. >> That car was in the window for years.
[08:17] >> They couldn't sell it. But I just like you're the salesman. >> Wait, you have one car to sell. That's all you got to do. And you can close the showroom. Forget [laughter] Yeah. I That's It's the most English
[08:32] thing in the world. It's pretty fascinating. But I mean, everyone knows the story. Fast. I believe it's still the fastest normally or naturally >> That's right. >> In the world. 241 142.
[08:46] >> That's right. 47 maybe. I'm not sure. But it's in the 40s. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, and and still a wonderful car to drive. Uh but it it it does show its age when you realize you don't have any traction control, no ABS, you know. I I was
[09:00] >> brakes in general. >> Yeah. Yeah. I was on the freeway once and I just downshifted and nailed it and I got wheel spin. I'm going [snorts] I'm >> And I'm going, okay, let me just get off the throttle easy. Oh, and it it came
[09:15] around, but I I didn't panic, but I'm going Because you have to You drive the P1 and that has every driver aid. You know, that that'll save your life. It it makes it a great car. But this, of course, is
[09:29] it a great car. But this, of course, is the the car that built the legend. And >> Yes. >> It's it's everything you believe. A lightweight stereo. Everything is
[09:41] Well, it's just an incredible car. It just inc. And here's here's a Harold Dermit story. I got it. I had it one day and I I couldn't get it started. Just nothing. So I called Harold. Hey, what's the
[09:56] problem? Well, it shouldn't be should be all right. I'll try this. Give it a minute. All right, I'll come back to All right. So, we start taking it apart and we got our alligator clips and trying to trace. Now, we got power. What's Harold?
[10:10] Any idea? No, I can't think of anything. All right. So, after about four hours, I said, "Well, let me I'll do it again tomorrow." So, I get in. I said, "Harold, anything." He says, "Well, of course you know about the secret
[10:23] >> The the secret turnoff switch. What secret turnoff switch? Oh, yes. You Oh, I'm sorry. I must have forgot. Well, there's a button in these. It's hidden. You You press it and it disables the So,
[10:36] of course, I get in, I press it, it starts. I'm taking my alligator clips that understated. Well, of course you know about me. [laughter] >> Which reminds me, I had forgotten it, but one of the first conversations you
[10:51] and I had, you said, "You know about the secret switch, don't you?" I mean, you >> But you knew about it, right? >> No, I didn't know about it. car? >> I know. Cuz you can hit it with your
[11:05] on, off, or >> I mean, you have one car to sell. It's not like [laughter] you have you have one car in your showroom, you know. Oh, yeah. Tell people about these that just connects with Yeah. Just But but I mean
[11:18] >> Oh, that's true. >> Yeah. It's just Yeah. This is I think the car that you know much like an athlete in his prime or a rock and roll
[11:30] star or musician, there's a time in your life like your Rosson Wells, it's 25 to 32 years old. That's when you do your best work. And you know Gordon does best work. And you know Gordon does brilliant work but this was his what's
[11:44] it opus is that the word you want I mean yeah this is a because it was so I mean >> has pieces of this but this was revolutionary when it come out there was nothing like it smooth >> this is more evolutionary this is
[11:58] revolutionary yeah that's right everybody from generation to generation should know this car won lemon overall >> right >> and that I mean I'm not sure that'll never be repeated. It hadn't been done
[12:10] before and uh it hadn't been done since. >> Yeah. Well, back in the back in the 50s, Jaguar would drive the cars to the race, win the race, and then drive them home Yeah. >> I mean, this was a road car. They had to
[12:26] detune. They had more horsepower than Lamar allowed. Yeah. They had to dune it >> and it was not a purpose-built race. every everybody everybody else is and it won overall. I think it was like one
[12:40] >> That sounds right. >> But it's a road car that beat all the race cars, reliability, everything. You know, always there's always things in road cars that just can't stand up to the pressure and the horsepower and all
[12:56] that kind of stuff. Metal dental strength, nothing. Everything in this strength, nothing. Everything in this first carbon fiber cabin. I remember >> Yeah. >> To make it. Now it takes like 45
[13:09] >> So, you know, it shows you how fast >> it was a cutting edge car. No doubt about it. In 1995, you had the >> prototypes that were I mean per, you >> LMP cars. >> Yeah.
[13:21] >> I know. >> I mean, now I I I know it had a lot to right? All this, but >> doesn't matter. >> this car ran in the rain. So, >> and this was the first car when I got
[13:36] >> Oh, yeah. >> That you you can connect with the factory in England. Wow. That That's impossible. [laughter] That's ridiculous. I never heard of. But they they could actually kind of tune
[13:49] the car. What? Yeah. >> I mean, it seems so naive now. We But but yeah, it was pretty amazing. And to this day, there's only a few of those >> I've got this one. >> Try and find one. Yeah. Yeah. I mean,
[14:03] >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Got the little white little cotton cotton gloves. >> Yeah, that's all they supposed to put on cotton gloves. Yeah. Yeah. [laughter] Very funny. Well, let's move on to car
[14:15] number two. By this point, uh Gordon Murray had uh left McLaren. The reputation, the image, see it in people's brains for life. I mean, you you're not going to beat that. Uh, so this car inspired by Gordon
[14:31] because this has things on it that Gordon would probably not like. Traction control, AB, all those kind of things. But being a modern company and constant government rules and you've got to have ABS now, you've got to have like this
[14:44] doesn't have a backup camera, but I think the later later ones did. Uh, so this is most unlike these two, I think it's fair to say, but not not enough to
[14:57] make it totally alien. I mean, you see, you can sense the DNA from this in this car. But this was another car that there were three cars out. There was the Ferrari LaFerrari, the 918, and the McLaren P1. And I remember at the time
[15:12] Mlan was very nervous cuz it was still they had the MP412C but it was still unproven. It was a lot of money. They're only building 399 of them and they were a little worried if they would sell if people would get it,
[15:26] you know. Uh but obviously they did. I mean the the reports came in and people loved it. McLaren to me has the best steering of any supercar. That's the one area. That's why they they keep it rear wheel drive only just to get to give you
[15:40] >> I I love it, you know. I do too. Yeah. >> I mean, I drive a lot of cars are all-wheel drive and it's fun and you're probably faster and everything, but this just has such a light, airy feel >> for a not a light. Well, it's it's light
[15:53] by modern standards, 3600 lb, something like that. As opposed to a Lotus, which is 1,500 lb. But yeah, but pretty amazing car. horsepowers up to uh what
[16:05] >> Yep. >> 903 from what are we? 617 I think it was >> That's about 617. >> Yeah, 617 on the F1. [clears throat] Uh I've had mine for 10 years. Uh no problems at all. It's been pretty
[16:20] bulletproof. The real trick to these is it's a hybrid and you just you just leave it plugged in when it's not parked. I have so many friends of mine, these rich guys buy cars. I went to Paris for two months. I
[16:33] come back, the car's dead. Well, yeah, you can't. [laughter] Yeah, it's like an iPhone. You can't leave it on your dresser. It's going to because it's a computer. It's running all the time. I'm, you know, I I check my
[16:46] battery and I'm still at 92% 10 years later. >> So, that was more 11 years later, which is pretty impressive just because when it's not running, it's got electrons going through it, you know, keeping
[16:59] everything moving. But yeah, these are these are pretty incredible cars. What what's your feeling on this one? >> Well, it's it's my favorite car to >> Yeah. Of the three of the three cars. Now, honestly, I've only got about seven
[17:14] or eight hours seat time in the new T50. >> And so, you know, I may change my mind. It may become my favorite car. >> Right. Right. >> But presently, this car is is
[17:27] astounding. I mean, you know, if I'm going to go out driving with a bunch of enthusiasts and we're going to, you know, this is the car I'm going to take. >> Right. Right.
[17:39] >> And either this one or the McLaren 675LT, which is like a baby P1. >> Right. Right. >> And uh has the same suspension, the same architecture, same chassis, everything except the battery.
[17:52] >> And so, you know, I can't talk enough. This is my second P1. And uh so that >> your second P. What? What did did you crash the first one? What happened?
[18:04] >> Well, we we had a little situation on track that uh didn't work out as well as >> Well, that's that's the most British statement. A little situation on track. [laughter] It didn't work out as we hoped. That that's one you
[18:20] [laughter] Little situation. Yeah. The brakes don't not work. They They progress. [laughter] They don't They don't stop. >> You didn't ask properly. >> You know, I have a Bristol. You saw my
[18:34] Bristol 403. >> And in the manual, they tell you why the car does not have air conditioning >> because you will miss out on the pestal you ride through the country. You'll miss out on the pesto smells. [laughter]
[18:49] You know, the fact that you're sweating and flies are in the car that nothing. You just missed it. So that's funny. So you're you're [laughter] >> Yeah, that's good. All right, let's go to the pest. Yeah, this is
[19:02] >> this is another master work from Gordon. It is it's the fan car. It incorporates what he knew back in the 70s and 80s with I love the fan on the back. >> Do you? I do, too. I' I've grown to love it. You know, at first when I first saw
[19:17] it. You know, at first when I first saw it, I thought, "Oh, no." But now I'm all into it. Well, I love it because it's not it's functional. It's not there, you when there's no turbos involved, you know, that kind of thing. I mean,
[19:30] there's nothing on a Gordon Murray car that doesn't absolutely have to be >> And the reason for it is is I mean, his fan cars were so successful that they unfair to everybody else." >> You know, I mean, that's that's how good
[19:45] he is, you know. And the fact that you have this in a road car, I think it it just makes it really exciting. Plus, it makes it really different, you know, for don't really know a lot about cars. What what makes that different? This is the
[20:00] real selling point of it. Aha. It's kind of cool. And it's and it's functional, you know. It has a purpose. Yeah. Now, this car, like this is a Gordon Murray V12. This is probably the last normally aspirated V12 anybody will build, I
[20:16] >> That's that's the way it was presented to us. And of course, people can do what they do, but Gordon stood up on his feet and made a presentation to a bunch of prospective buyers and >> and he put this out and I think the cars
[20:31] >> You know, immediately because people were so excited about having this >> Yeah. >> Yeah. You know, to me, that's always the sign of a real car company is when you build your own engine. Yeah. That's the
[20:47] heart. That's the soul of the vehicle. Yeah. And it says everything you want to say. Uh it's not the most horsepower just as this was not the most horsepower, but it the best to use everything it has
[20:59] >> most efficiently than any other car because this is about a little less than 700 horsepower, which is more than enough really. >> Yeah. And it's the it's the weight to power ratio that makes the difference.
[21:11] >> Yes. >> I mean, think about that. You've got to to have all the safety features, which this did not have to have, >> And yet it's lighter. And that's Yeah, that's that's impressive.
[21:26] >> Well, Cossworth built the engine, as you know. Yeah. And uh it was a special commission from uh Gordon Murray to Cossworth for certain number of engines were built to these specifications. And the the 12,100 RPM red line and the 4 L
[21:44] maximum displacement, those were two requirements that Gordon wouldn't budge >> Right. >> And it required Cossworth to build a bespoke engine. And so that that's a pretty good story. That's a fun story.
[21:57] >> Yeah. Yeah. And that's expensive. >> Yeah. >> Because this How many liter is this? This is 6.3 liter. >> Four. >> Yeah. Yeah.
[22:10] >> 3.95. It's a 4 liter engine basically. >> Yeah. Yeah. Impressive. And of course it >> Yeah. >> Which make it a little tricky to get into the US, isn't it? >> Yeah. You you you don't con conform to
[22:24] the safety regulations. So, you have to have a show and display waiver. >> Can Can we open the door? Let's open the Open the door on both sides. Open the door on both sides. >> You have to use the key, right?
[22:37] There's a There's a party trick for you. Yeah. Yeah. [laughter] dress at the dance with this. [laughter] You know, you're pulling. Nobody else get.
[22:52] >> Yeah. Well, just and and there's a button on the camera to to open the >> That's right. >> Okay. Well, this gives you some idea. As you see, it's pretty Spartan in there. Is there a sound system or you use your
[23:04] >> No, there's a sound system. >> Oh, there is. Okay. >> It's a It's got the uh Apple Play. >> Oh, okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. there. >> It's It's way low. I mean, you have to
[23:18] >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Dry sump and all that. >> Yeah. I mean, there's real F1 technology in this car. It makes it exciting. >> Now, does the fan run all the time or is it you flip a switch? How does that
[23:33] >> It's It's got four different modes that you can set, the driver can set and in >> Okay. >> So, it depends on what you you know,
[23:45] it's basically selectable. >> Okay. So, is it like sport, touring, track? >> Yeah. There's a there's the normal GT >> right? >> And the the fan is operated by the
[23:57] >> right? >> And turning it on when it feels it needs >> And turning it on when it feels it needs it. Uh there's the high downforce mode downforce, you're on some twisty roads or wet weather or whatever it might be.
[24:11] U there's the uh streamline mode when you want to go fast, >> And uh and it runs all the time in streamline. And then there's the V-Max mode, which is, you know, when you take the the power that go that starts the
[24:26] >> drop it on the crankshaft for about 3 minutes. >> Okay. Okay. Now, there's no wing on the back. The fan >> Yeah. Because I know Gordon never liked wings.
[24:39] >> And and my Countach had had a wing when I bought it. And when Gandini came here, the the wing." He was thrilled cuz to him the car was pure without the wing. The people put the stupid thing on there. It looked so
[24:53] he was so happy. Yeah. >> That that I was driving it without the >> Well, you got your finger on it. That's exactly the way Gordon reasoned it. He on the back of the car. >> Right. Right. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, very nice.
[25:08] Well, it's Boy, it's an impressive automobile. And is there a rear view or just rear view camera only? is a rear view mirror. >> No, it's a rear view camera. >> Right. Right. Okay. Cuz I think that's
[25:20] legal now. It used to be illegal when this car was first proposed in America. That was one Oh, no. You can't have a camera. You know, there's so many odd countries you can't have in other countries. You know, I remember in in
[25:34] the States 1957, some states outlawed dual headlights because they were too bright. >> So, if you bought like a Chrysler, where going to put on which at which light and then they made everything you know
[25:48] >> 50 state legal but yeah yeah >> from [clears throat] my experience in having the F1 for 20 years and driving it and driving the T50 now the T50
[26:01] you drive it fundamentally exactly like the F1 just drives better right >> it breaks better it accelerates faster it turns better everything about it it does better Right. >> But it's not it's not revolutionary.
[26:15] >> Right. >> Uh it's it's strictly just taking something like a toothbrush and now you got an electric toothbrush or something >> Right. Right. >> And and that's what this that's what
[26:28] this car is all about. But it's a lot of fun in the process of that. >> Uh it becomes uh a lot of fun to drive. It's very nimble. It takes all the wonderful things that the F1 does, >> right? It takes you further down that
[26:41] same path. >> Cuz I noticed in the F1 at extremely light. Yeah. I'm going [laughter]
[26:53] you feel like the wheels they're not off the ground obviously. >> you got about this much. >> Yeah. They're a couple inches higher. >> And it's Yeah. Yeah. You know, you drive a modern car with all the downforce
[27:07] there's the difference. Yeah. >> Andy Wallace said he would never do that >> Yeah. Yeah. [laughter] Yeah. Andy Wallace is the guy that went to two uh >> 247 or something. >> 247. Yeah. And quite a guy, too. Yeah.
[27:22] >> Yeah. Nice fell. Nice guy. Nice guy. Well, can we take it for a ride? >> Let's do it. >> Let's give it a shot. I'm very excited.
[28:18] >> Yeah. >> 5,000 is where like 3500 is on a regular >> I find that I drive the car most of the time in fourth gear. Most of the time it's between 5 and 7,000 RPM. That's
[28:31] kind of the comfort spot for it. Max torque is about 99 9,000 something Max torque is about 99 9,000 something like that. And it's got about 70% of the max torque available from 3,000 RPM. So, you really
[28:45] very much. >> But it just sounds so damn good. >> Oh, yeah. Really? You really >> you want to do it anyway.
[29:02] That's it. You're not going to hurt it.
[29:18] >> And it feels good on your foot, too. Just the sense of the torque. >> Right. As an American, we're so used to overrevving engines. Right. Right. You can't really do that here. Yes. Fabulous.
[29:35] >> It's just fun. It's just a fun thing. >> And for me, all the fun is between 40 >> You get above that and now you're going to jail. know, >> it's not that much more fun.
[29:48] >> Yeah. Exactly. You know, >> you know, so many cars, especially electric supercars, I've I've driven like the Remac and some of those. like the Remac and some of those. >> Yeah. incredibly fast, but
[30:00] doing 80. You know what I mean? You know, that's true. That's right. >> This thing I I keep thinking, oh, 7 grand, I going 90. Oh, I'm going 56 time at normal speed. >> That's the point.
[30:13] >> And to me, that's the fun part about it. >> That's the whole message of this car. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> It's hard for young guys to to grab hold speed. >> Right. Right.
[30:25] And this is certainly horsepower and speed. It's just not >> Everybody has to have the fastest tenth of a second to whatever, you know. >> Right. Right. >> That used to be my dad's favorite joke.
[30:38] hearing aids." >> Uhhuh. get. >> Yeah. >> Guy says, "What kind are they?" About quarter to six.
[31:00] >> You're smiling. You know, it really is fabulous. the next generation of a car? >> I think so. I believe they will. Yes.
[31:15] >> You know, raise to 14,000 or something crazy. Just no window, no doors, no crazy. Just no window, no doors, no nothing.
[31:30] than the F1, isn't it? >> Yeah. Yeah.
[31:44] That was very nice. Yeah, it's going right now. That thing is fabulous. it, but you can't. No, >> that's right. >> It sounds like it's over revving. [music] Yeah, they're screaming engine.
[31:58] >> Yeah. Only Gordon could build the successor to the F1. I agree. >> I like only Copela could do Godfather 2, you know. about it like that. >> Well, you got to need the master who
[32:11] understands all the characters and all the inner workings and all that stuff. >> Yep. And this car gets its uh this this T50
[32:23] gets its credibility from Gordon, right? Yeah. the F1, it does feel evolutionary. Brakes are better, obviously.
[32:36] >> That's that's it. >> And steering is better and downforce is >> And steering is better and downforce is remarkable. I mean, that F1 got awfully light in the front. >> Oh, boy. Yeah, it was it was scary.
[32:51] >> Yeah, about think I got mine up to about 160. >> Yeah, I never I did it once. >> Yeah, I never did it again. Yeah, >> I like the way it handled. It's just very nice. Yeah, it's just fun.
[33:06] very nice. Yeah, it's just fun. Very nimble. >> That's That's about right. I mean, it's the same size.
[33:18] the same size. >> Exactly. That's right. really a,000 horsepower compared to a mon any other car out there, you know.
[33:34] >> Yeah. I mean, you look at that weight to power ratio. That's >> And whose transmission is it? Is it their own? >> Zrag. Oh, >> what are these Michelin cup twos on
[33:47] >> Yeah. >> Yeah.
[33:59] Now, anytime you want to leave this in the garage, just let me know. You're a the garage, just let me know. You're a good friend. Yeah. Yeah.
[34:12] You don't really need a radio in this thing. >> I enjoy I never put any music on or anything. >> No, but so enjoy the engine, too. >> Yeah.
[34:25] I'm glad you get get your hands on it. >> Well, thank you. No, this is what a treat. This is >> I like it makes the same noises at 50 as >> I mean that's that's what really makes it enjoyable.
[34:39] >> Exactly. You don't have to go super fast.
[35:01] >> Yeah. Lucky. >> Yeah.
[35:14] Boy, this is a thrill of a lifetime. It really is great. Thanks so much. >> I feel the same way, you know. >> Yeah. Yeah. Nice to be with you. it's good to see a collector really
[35:26] enjoys his car. Thank you, my friend. >> Well, I hope you enjoyed this episode as responsible, but you couldn't enjoy it more than I did. >> No, you you had a better time, but I Yeah, I had a great time.
[35:38] it. >> Yeah, >> Gordon Murray, thank you, sir. Thank you very much. very much. See you guys next week. Bye-bye.
