[00:00] Welcome to a very special edition of

[00:02] JLo's Garage. The car we're featuring

[00:04] today 1967

[00:06] Corvette. This is a one-owner car. The

[00:08] original owner is here today. We're

[00:10] going to meet him. The car is famous be

[00:13] well because it's original and also

[00:15] because the owner was the 46th president

[00:17] of the United States. Please welcome Joe

[00:20] Biden.

[00:20] >> How are you, sir?

[00:21] >> Doing well. She's looking beautiful.

[00:24] >> We're going to take it out today with

[00:25] your permission and uh

[00:27] >> absolutely. Hopefully, you'll drive with

[00:28] me and uh we'll see what she does. You

[00:32] get a chance to play with us a little

[00:33] bit now?

[00:34] >> Well, a little bit, but I still have

[00:35] Secret Service with me, so when I drive,

[00:37] they got to be in the car. Yeah.

[00:38] >> Although, they all draw straws who

[00:40] doesn't have to get in the car with me.

[00:43] >> So, tell us a story on this car. You're

[00:45] the original owner.

[00:46] >> My dad used to run an automobile

[00:48] dealership and uh my deceased wife, she

[00:50] was from Skinny Atlas, New York. And uh

[00:53] my dad wanted to get something special

[00:54] for the wedding. And so she had a

[00:57] Tempest and I had an old Chevy. He said,

[00:59] "Bring them over to the dealership and

[01:01] we'll fix them up for you." And so a

[01:03] week before the wedding when she was

[01:05] down was up in Scandal in New York where

[01:07] we got married. And we went over to get

[01:09] it and all of a sudden the whole the

[01:11] whole staff from the the entire

[01:14] organization pulled aside and this was

[01:16] sitting there and he said, "This your

[01:18] wedding gift."

[01:19] >> Wow. And so, and my dad didn't have the

[01:22] money to buy this, but he could make the

[01:24] monthly payments,

[01:25] >> right?

[01:25] >> And so, this was my wedding gift. I've

[01:27] had it since then. It's been

[01:29] >> There's still only two payments left,

[01:30] right?

[01:31] >> Only three. Three. What were the

[01:34] payments? What was it? Probably like $35

[01:36] a month.

[01:36] >> Well, I don't know what it was, but I

[01:38] still have the the sticker price, you

[01:39] know, on the window and

[01:42] >> was 5,700 bucks.

[01:43] >> That was a lot of money.

[01:45] >> Yeah. No, for us it was.

[01:47] >> Yeah, it certainly was. Yeah. That's And

[01:49] you've had it all these years. I mean,

[01:51] >> all these years

[01:52] >> now. We last drove this car about 10

[01:55] years ago.

[01:56] >> I owe you big. You realize it's only the

[01:58] third time I'm getting to drive this in

[02:00] seven years.

[02:00] >> Is that right? Only

[02:01] >> That's right. Third time.

[02:07] >> Sounds good.

[02:13] >> Try your brakes.

[02:14] >> They're good.

[02:25] when you were vice president and Colon

[02:27] Powell showed up in his Corvette,

[02:29] remember you got

[02:30] >> he had a new Corvette with about 50 more

[02:32] horsepower.

[02:33] >> Right. Right.

[02:36] >> Wonder who that cowboy is.

[02:40] It's a good looking car.

[02:42] The only bad thing about driving an

[02:44] older Corvette, there's always some show

[02:46] off and a new Corvette trying to blow

[02:49] your doors up. But the question is, can

[02:50] you drive?

[03:02] >> Remember, he's got better brakes than

[03:03] you.

[03:03] >> I know. You got He got better everything

[03:05] than I do.

[03:11] Look who it is.

[03:12] >> Where were you? I kept looking in the

[03:14] mirror. I JUST WONDER WHO THE HELL THAT

[03:15] COWBOY WAS IN FRONT of me.

[03:17] >> Show up.

[03:17] >> And that was kind of fun. We We had a

[03:19] good time. He was quite a guy, wasn't

[03:21] he?

[03:21] >> He was a good man.

[03:22] >> He was a good guy.

[03:22] >> Really decent guy. I remember you

[03:23] standing out there in that runway with

[03:25] that old runway where the Secret Service

[03:27] uses practice with your flag. And I got

[03:30] out of the hole and I was tail fish

[03:32] tailing. Yeah. And he he went, "Whoa.

[03:42] He didn't want to screw around.

[03:44] >> I was in the car with you and well he

[03:46] was burned the rubber and fist the

[03:47] secret services. I mean it looked like

[03:49] one OF THOSE KEYSTONE GO LIKE THAT JUMP

[03:52] and you know like one of the go catch

[03:55] him go and they sent somebody out there.

[03:57] It was it was so much fun. We were down

[03:59] at the uh I guess the proving grounds.

[04:01] >> That's right. It was a secret service

[04:03] practice area.

[04:04] >> Yeah. the old runway.

[04:06] >> Yeah, the old runway. And you you're

[04:07] burning rubber and speed shift and it

[04:09] was it was a lot of fun. And uh but

[04:12] they'll probably chase us again today,

[04:13] but that that's okay. That's okay. So,

[04:15] >> but you asked me then, could you drive

[04:17] it? You're going to get to drive it?

[04:18] >> Yeah. Yeah, I want to drive it. I think

[04:20] it'd be great fun. So, tell me. Okay.

[04:22] You become senator, all the things.

[04:25] Obviously, you put it away for a few

[04:26] years correct?

[04:28] >> Well, I kind of had to put it in my

[04:29] garage. Yeah.

[04:30] >> Right. Okay. But but you just you always

[04:32] wanted to keep it, right? You didn't

[04:34] >> Oh, yeah. I'm not I didn't want to sell

[04:35] it. And uh I I live out semi country and

[04:38] I have a long driveway

[04:40] >> and every once in a while I get so

[04:42] frustrated the secret service not crazy

[04:44] about it. I'll pull it out of the

[04:45] garage, get the bottom of the drive.

[04:46] It's about a quarter mile drive and I

[04:48] crank it up and lay rubber

[04:51] just to get the feel of again

[04:52] >> of officer just to get the feel of it.

[04:55] Of course that's that's great. And you

[04:57] got the proper gearbox. You got the

[04:59] four-speed, which I love cuz a lot of

[05:01] guys might have gotten the automatic cuz

[05:03] it's, you know, I don't know why, but I

[05:05] don't know why you would. But

[05:07] >> yeah, and to me, this is still the best

[05:10] looking Corvette this year, 67, cuz the

[05:13] last of the the C2 bodies have changed

[05:16] in ' 68. Y

[05:17] >> Yeah. I I really thought this was a good

[05:19] looking car.

[05:20] >> I did too. I still do. I has so many

[05:23] memories. So many memories. Well, we're

[05:25] going to take her for a spin and and see

[05:28] how she goes.

[05:29] >> All right. You You going to drive it?

[05:30] >> I'm going to drive. You ready to go?

[05:32] >> I'm ready to go.

[05:37] >> Man, looking good inside, too, man.

[05:38] >> It does. It does. Two old guys getting

[05:41] in a Corvette.

[05:44] >> Whoa. Sounds healthy. Whoa.

[05:56] I was so excited when I got this thing.

[05:59] That was great. I had no idea it was

[06:02] coming.

[06:18] >> Yeah.

[06:20] See what tuneup do does wonders for this

[06:23] thing. Whenever I drive an American car,

[06:25] I have my Americanmade watch. I was

[06:28] going to say it's amazing.

[06:29] >> Oh, look at that. Now, see you have the

[06:30] Jay Leno watch. That's that's a great

[06:33] watch, too. As a watch maker in Mount

[06:35] Joy, Pennsylvania, Lancaster, and he he

[06:38] handmakes all these watches. And you

[06:41] know, America at one point was the

[06:42] watchmaking capital of the world. Wall

[06:44] fam, all of them. And they were the best

[06:46] watches in the world because they were

[06:49] the railroad watches. You know, when

[06:51] there was an accident like 1890 where

[06:54] two trains hit head-on and they realized

[06:56] there was no way for a conductor in say

[07:00] Cincinnati to have the same time as a

[07:02] conductor in Cleveland because the sun

[07:04] would be in. So they got 12 noon at

[07:06] different times in each watches. So the

[07:08] government mandated that all watches had

[07:11] to be to a railroad standard and

[07:13] consequently American watches became the

[07:15] best of the world and the Swiss copied

[07:18] the Americans.

[07:19] >> I I did not know that.

[07:20] >> Oh yeah. And then eventually just

[07:23] through lobbying a lot of other things,

[07:24] the Swiss managed to kind of overtake

[07:27] the whole industry.

[07:28] >> By the way, I'm a civilian ridden the

[07:30] railroad more than any paid railroad.

[07:33] I've ridden over a total of

[07:38] 1,800,000 miles on that track.

[07:40] >> Really?

[07:41] >> Wow.

[07:41] >> Secret service understand doesn't like

[07:43] you riding a train.

[07:44] >> Right. Right.

[07:45] >> And uh so what happened was I'm down in

[07:48] a station in Washington. Right. About to

[07:52] go home and see my mom who was very sick

[07:54] at my home in Delaware

[07:57] and I have about uh I don't know there

[07:59] must be total of 30 agents standing

[08:02] around me and a conductor walks up in

[08:04] the middle of grabs my cheek. I thought

[08:07] they were going to shoot him. He said,

[08:08] "Joey." He said, "What the all this

[08:11] about you riding a, 100,000 miles on Air

[08:15] Force planes? Do you realize how many

[08:17] miles you've written on Amtrak?" They

[08:19] said, "We calculated it." You as a

[08:21] senator for 36 years for you was a total

[08:25] of 298 miles a day. You averaged 22

[08:30] trips a year. 36 years times that. And

[08:34] that's not counting VP. You've traveled

[08:36] 1,200,000 miles already. I don't hear

[08:38] any more of this about Air Force 2.

[08:41] >> I'm serious.

[08:44] >> My father never let me get a motorcycle.

[08:46] >> Now you know what president had a

[08:48] motorcycle was Reagan.

[08:50] >> Yeah. You go, Jay. Jay, I had an Indian.

[08:53] Did you ever have an Indian J? I Yes,

[08:55] Mr. President. I did. We talked about

[08:57] that. He had one of the greatest lines.

[09:00] He said to me, Jay, were you a good

[09:01] student? I said, no, Mr. President, I'm

[09:03] lic. He goes shows

[09:06] you know and every day I kick myself

[09:09] thinking how much further I could have

[09:11] gone if I just applied myself and I just

[09:14] thought that was the greatest line ever.

[09:15] I mean you're president of the United

[09:17] States. Where do you want to go? Killed

[09:20] me.

[09:23] I wish you got to know my son Bo. I

[09:26] >> Yeah, I would have liked that. I would

[09:28] have liked

[09:28] >> you know he uh he called me one day.

[09:33] He said, "Dad, where are you Friday

[09:34] afternoon?" He said, "Where do you want

[09:36] me to be?" He said, "I want you to pin

[09:37] my bars on." Said, "Pin your bars on."

[09:40] Said, "Bo, you're a sitting attorney

[09:41] general of the state of Delaware. I want

[09:44] you to run for the governor and you and

[09:48] you join the National Guard." He said,

[09:51] "Yeah, Dad." I said, "You know, Bo,

[09:53] you're either federal property or state

[09:54] property."

[09:56] Look, Dad. He said, "85% of everyone in

[10:00] Iraq is National Guard and they're

[10:04] mostly Delawareians. How can I be home?

[10:05] I'm 41 years old."

[10:07] >> Yeah.

[10:07] >> How can I be home? And uh

[10:11] and he uh

[10:14] won the Bronze Star, the conspicuous

[10:16] service medal.

[10:19] A major in the United States military.

[10:22] We

[10:22] >> were going home one night. It's toward

[10:24] the end. We knew we had no chance of him

[10:26] living. He's

[10:28] getting toward the very end and he could

[10:31] still walk. He was home

[10:35] and Jill and I wanted from Washington.

[10:37] We

[10:39] the Friday train

[10:42] and went to Bo's house. So after dinner,

[10:44] Jill said, "I'm going to go home and

[10:45] change."

[10:47] And Bo said, "Can you stick them out of

[10:49] the house?" I said, "Sure."

[10:51] He turned to his wife and said, "Can you

[10:54] take the kids outside for the pool?" He

[10:56] said, he said, "Dad," he said, "I know

[11:00] what you're going to do."

[11:02] Dad, I'm not afraid of dying. I'm going

[11:04] to be okay. I know I'm going to die. I'm

[11:06] all right. He said, "But Dad, I know

[11:09] what you're going to do. You're going to

[11:11] quit when I die." I said, "Bo," he said,

[11:14] "Dad, look at me." And his bice

[11:18] like, "Look at me, Dad.

[11:21] So I'm looking said, "God damn it, don't

[11:23] look at me, Dad." I said, "Give me your

[11:26] word as abiding. You will not quit when

[11:29] I die. Give me your word." I said,

[11:32] "Boy," he said, "dad, give me your word.

[11:34] Godamn it."

[11:36] So, I give you my word, boy. I will not

[11:38] quit cuz I planned on quitting when he

[11:40] died. And uh so that's why I wrote that

[11:44] book, Promised Me, Dad, right? Cuz I

[11:47] wanted his kids and his grandkids.

[11:49] >> Well, I remember. Do you remember you

[11:51] came out to see me?

[11:52] >> Yep.

[11:53] >> Right before you ran and we talked about

[11:56] I think you were afraid that people

[11:59] would try to use boats debt.

[12:01] >> Yep.

[12:02] >> Uh as accuse you of being a you know

[12:07] capitalizing for votes and that

[12:09] nonsense.

[12:11] >> I remember telling you how ridiculous I

[12:13] thought that was because I remember

[12:14] saying I don't know anybody that

[12:17] capitalized on something like that.

[12:20] But

[12:22] >> I I just thought it was a interesting

[12:24] moment and I'm glad you did the right

[12:27] thing.

[12:30] >> Yeah. You know, to me, I was always a

[12:32] car guy and I was always the designated

[12:35] driver.

[12:36] >> So I knew so I couldn't drink. So but

[12:39] you know, it never had any interest in

[12:40] me. I never got the whole thing. I could

[12:43] be a jerk without drinking. So I didn't

[12:45] really need to drink. Knew me both. I

[12:48] had the bad reputation

[12:51] when I was in grade school, high school,

[12:53] and college of being a daredevil.

[12:55] >> Yeah.

[12:57] And uh I look back on it, thank God I

[13:00] didn't drink some of the stuff I did.

[13:02] >> Yeah. What kind of daredevil stops you?

[13:04] >> Well, as a kid, for example, we lived up

[13:07] in Scranton and there was a Merrywood

[13:08] College.

[13:10] There was a 15t stone wall that went

[13:13] around Marywood

[13:14] and I was one of the only guys that

[13:16] climbed the wall, run the wall and then

[13:19] go up over the steel over the entrance.

[13:21] You know,

[13:22] >> that kind of stuff on your life, you

[13:24] know. I went to one of those old schools

[13:26] that were three stories

[13:28] >> and they had they had the big window had

[13:30] open with the rod and they slid out so

[13:32] you had you had a huge opening.

[13:33] >> Yeah. So, we're always on the third

[13:35] floor and whenever we have a substitute,

[13:39] I would get my friend's boots

[13:41] and and when I heard the teacher coming,

[13:43] I would hold them out the window and

[13:45] then I go, I'm I'm trying TO HOLD ON

[13:47] LIKE I'd let go of the boots and then

[13:49] she and my friend would already be lying

[13:51] on the ground, you know, outside the

[13:53] window and SHE GO, "OH MY GOD, OH MY

[13:56] GOD." AND THEN RUN down and get the

[13:57] principal. Then the princip would come

[13:59] up and my friend would be sitting in the

[14:00] seat and we'd all be sitting there and

[14:02] she'd realize that, you know, we played

[14:03] a trick on you. You're stupid.

[14:07] Look at this. Isn't this crazy? It's

[14:08] just amazing.

[14:11] I mean, you're in the middle of LA.

[14:14] >> Well, see, you come from that era where

[14:17] if a politician drove a foreign car,

[14:20] what's the matter with you?

[14:21] >> Oh, by the way, not a shot.

[14:23] >> No. Yeah.

[14:24] >> Not a shot at driving a foreign car.

[14:26] Period. zero. None. I

[14:29] >> think another one of the great things

[14:30] about you being president was this area

[14:33] right here.

[14:34] >> Yep.

[14:35] >> If you hadn't been elected, this would

[14:36] probably all be construction and mini

[14:39] marts and all kinds of stuff. But it's

[14:41] now national land. So people in

[14:43] California, the most dense, one of the

[14:46] most dense states in the union, there's

[14:49] this open area where people can travel

[14:51] and just enjoy the fresh air. But you

[14:53] know, you another two miles, you can't

[14:56] even see a house or a building. You're

[14:58] in the middle of the wilderness in the

[15:00] busiest one of the busiest cities in the

[15:02] United States.

[15:03] >> And how many acres did you guys actually

[15:05] save? Land and water 674 million acres.

[15:10] >> Wow.

[15:10] >> And uh this entire

[15:13] this entire area we're going through

[15:15] here that can't be developed.

[15:17] >> Yeah. I think that's great. And uh it

[15:19] was you got to say something for future

[15:22] generations. I went down to Colorado

[15:24] River. I went down to Snake River. Went

[15:26] out I took my family there. I wanted

[15:28] them to see it. We went down on six day

[15:31] rides down to Colorado. We when I I'll

[15:33] never forget the first time I stood with

[15:35] my family, my kids, the Grand Canyon. I

[15:38] looked out, I said, "This is God's

[15:40] cathedral. It's a cathedral."

[15:43] >> Yeah.

[15:44] >> It's incredible.

[15:46] the idea

[15:48] that we wouldn't preserve this for our

[15:50] children to have the same opportunity

[15:53] we have.

[15:54] >> Well, I'm glad you did. Well, the other

[15:57] thing I was able to do, I I made sure

[15:59] there could be no oil drilling off the

[16:03] east coast, the west coast, and the 150

[16:05] mi off the Gulf of Mexico. He's doing it

[16:08] with all that protection, too. No more

[16:11] windmills.

[16:13] >> Yeah, that that

[16:14] >> because they kill birds. Yeah, I had a

[16:16] >> give me a sign. You know when I did then

[16:19] when I wrote I worked like hell to get

[16:21] the infrastructure bill and no one

[16:23] thought I could get past over a trillion

[16:26] dollars. How can we need the world to

[16:28] renewable the leading infrastructure in

[16:30] the world

[16:31] >> ports, bridges, roads and end that for

[16:35] billions of dollars for renewable

[16:38] energy.

[16:40] It has billions of dollars in there to

[16:43] make sure that there's enough electric

[16:45] stations all along every new highway

[16:48] built. But he's getting rid of all that,

[16:50] too. You know, the single biggest

[16:53] producer of energy in Texas,

[16:56] wind. Yeah,

[16:57] >> wind. He's trying to get rid of that,

[16:59] too.

[17:02] Almighty.

[17:04] Oh, it's incredible out here.

[17:06] Incredible.

[17:09] You're still in Los Angeles. Look at

[17:10] this.

[17:11] >> Yeah.

[17:11] >> Isn't that amazing?

[17:12] >> It is amazing. Advantage of future

[17:14] generations not having access to this.

[17:16] Look at all this. Right in the middle of

[17:18] LA.

[17:20] >> Incredible.

[17:22] Incredible.

[17:25] I know you're a big ice cream guy,

[17:26] right?

[17:27] >> I am, man.

[17:28] >> We got an ice cream shop at the end of

[17:30] this. So, what flavor you like?

[17:33] >> Chocolate chip.

[17:34] >> Chocolate chip.

[17:36] Get your chocolate chip.

[17:40] Have you guys ever met a president of

[17:42] the United States?

[17:43] >> No.

[17:43] >> Well, this is Joe Biden.

[17:45] >> Well, come on. Let's go get something to

[17:46] eat.

[17:47] >> It's got to be the longest ride you've

[17:49] had in that thing in years.

[17:50] >> Yeah, a long time.

[17:50] >> Joe, can I shake your hand?

[17:52] >> Sure, you can shake my hand. What's your

[17:53] name?

[17:53] >> Jacob.

[17:54] >> Hey, Jacob. My name's Joe.

[17:55] >> What's up, Joe?

[17:56] >> Nice to see you. Hi, everybody. How are

[17:58] you?

[17:58] >> Joe.

[18:03] >> You want chocolate chip?

[18:04] >> Wait, can I get a photo?

[18:06] >> Sure.

[18:09] I can't believe.

[18:10] >> Come on, let's go get some. Let the

[18:12] president get his ice cream.

[18:13] >> You're my favorite president, Joe.

[18:15] >> What's your name?

[18:16] >> Matthew.

[18:16] >> Good to see you, man. How old are you?

[18:18] >> I'm 12.

[18:19] >> Got to make me a promise.

[18:21] >> When you're president, remember me.

[18:24] >> Thank you.

[18:24] >> Okay.

[18:27] >> Chocolate chip.

[18:28] >> Chocolate chip.

[18:30] >> Sugar cone.

[18:30] >> A hand sugar cone for you, sir.

[18:33] >> How's that ice cream, Mr. President?

[18:35] >> Good, man. You guys getting ice cream?

[18:37] What kind of ice cream you want? What

[18:38] kind?

[18:39] >> Uh, monkey business.

[18:40] >> Monkey business.

[18:44] >> Come here.

[18:47] >> Boy, this is a nice driving car.

[18:50] >> I think it is.

[18:52] >> So, what was your very first car?

[18:55] >> My dad didn't want me to have a car

[18:57] before I was 18 years old.

[18:59] >> All right. I went to a school that was

[19:02] when we moved the school I went to was

[19:05] and the school bus a half hour drive.

[19:08] >> All right. And my dad said okay. And he

[19:12] got me a used I think it was a 54

[19:16] Studebaker. Ugly as hell.

[19:18] >> Oh yeah. Yeah.

[19:19] >> But had a big engine in it.

[19:21] >> Well, that's right. That would have had

[19:22] a 289 overhead valve. Yeah.

[19:25] >> And uh

[19:26] >> and so it was ugly as hell. But I used

[19:28] to be able to take a lot of guys in fast

[19:30] cars. They pull off a gun. I start want

[19:33] to go go, you know. Anyway, that was the

[19:36] first car I had. But the first car I had

[19:38] that I really liked was a a 19 54

[19:45] Chevy convertible. A 54. That would have

[19:48] been the six-cylinder, right?

[19:50] >> Yes.

[19:51] >> Yeah. But you missed the good the 265 V8

[19:54] came out the next year.

[19:56] >> Yeah. You just missed the boat by then.

[20:00] >> You drive another half hour, you're up

[20:02] to your butt in snow here.

[20:04] >> Boy, this engine sounds strong.

[20:06] >> Yeah, it does.

[20:07] >> Looks more like a painting than reality.

[20:10] Yeah. Yeah.

[20:13] And all the rain we've had lately, it's

[20:15] nice and green.

[20:16] >> Yep.

[20:17] >> I think that this is all WPA. Too bad we

[20:20] don't have a program like that anymore.

[20:22] That

[20:23] >> Yeah, I know. He's he's cutting back on

[20:26] all the programs that have

[20:28] apprenticeships assigned to or jobs.

[20:31] >> Yeah.

[20:32] >> You don't see another car coming.

[20:35] >> I know.

[20:35] >> It's the only place in LA where there's

[20:37] no traffic

[20:38] >> besides Massachusetts.

[20:40] >> Yeah.

[20:41] >> Is there any other state you're spending

[20:43] real time in?

[20:44] >> Well, I got a place in Rhode Island.

[20:46] Rhode Island's very pretty. Yeah, it is

[20:48] nice. I like New England.

[20:51] It's a funny place to be from. You know,

[20:54] when I lived in Massachusetts, I was the

[20:56] laziest guy anybody knew. When I moved

[20:58] to California, I was the hardest

[21:00] working. I hadn't changed. So,

[21:02] obviously, it's just the way people do

[21:04] things, you know?

[21:05] >> That's true. And when you live in what?

[21:07] You got a swimming pool? Yeah. You got

[21:09] nothing to do but sit in a pool all day.

[21:11] Don't you got a yard work to do? Don't

[21:12] you have to fix this? Like, it's like

[21:15] the funniest place to be from.

[21:17] I know you're a big union guy, as am I.

[21:21] And you were the first president to walk

[21:22] a union picket line, weren't you?

[21:24] >> I was. Look, one of the things is simple

[21:26] to me. The middle class built America,

[21:29] >> right? And unions built the middle

[21:32] class,

[21:32] >> right?

[21:33] >> Well, that's why I love Corvette. They

[21:35] build Yep.

[21:37] >> This car, not this particular one, but

[21:39] mine. They build it in Kentucky, paying

[21:42] a union wage,

[21:44] and it's cheaper, faster

[21:48] than the European Exotics. at literally

[21:50] 10 times the price.

[21:52] >> Yep.

[21:53] >> And you know, it's it's a real credit.

[21:55] Uh you go there, workers can afford to

[21:59] live in the town they're working in,

[22:01] >> and it's it's a real successful

[22:03] operation.

[22:04] >> And they can look at themselves in the

[22:05] mirror.

[22:06] >> Look, I said, my dad used to say, you

[22:09] know, it's a hell of a thing to work 40,

[22:12] 50, 60 hours a week,

[22:14] >> right? And come home and not be able to

[22:16] find buy the essentials.

[22:17] >> Yeah. It's all about affordability.

[22:20] >> You know what's interesting? About 15

[22:23] years ago when Detroit declared

[22:24] bankruptcy.

[22:25] >> Yep.

[22:27] >> I I I I called the city and I said,

[22:30] "Hey, I want to do a I want to do some

[22:32] free shows in the city. All you have to

[22:35] do is prove you're out of work and you

[22:37] want to take your wife or your husband

[22:39] out for a night out of town. We'll give

[22:42] them a bag of Doritos, a bottle of

[22:44] Pepsi, and they can watch the show." I

[22:47] think it was a silver dome at the time.

[22:49] They tore it down. Sat like 20,000

[22:51] people and all we could afford were

[22:54] eight security guards

[22:56] >> and now and and and people said, "Oh,

[22:58] it's going to be bedlin." And not one

[23:00] person misbehaved. They came, they

[23:02] watched the show, they thanked me for

[23:04] coming to Detroit. And you realize,

[23:07] >> you know, all people want to just give

[23:08] them a break and they'll exactly do the

[23:11] right thing.

[23:12] >> Even shot.

[23:13] >> Yeah. Just give people shot. That's all.

[23:16] But that's real. I mean, people we we

[23:18] you and I say things like that. People

[23:20] look at us like we're nuts. It's true. I

[23:22] know.

[23:23] >> Well, see, that's what I like. You come

[23:24] from that era when politicians use

[23:26] public transportation. A friend of mine

[23:28] said he saw you on a commercial flight

[23:30] one day and he goes, "Why are we on a

[23:31] commercial flight?" Well, you don't own

[23:33] a jet, correct? That's right. That's

[23:35] right. So, yeah. There you go. The whole

[23:38] public service thing you take take

[23:40] seriously. Well, I did. I mean, I I you

[23:43] know, it's their money and uh I don't

[23:47] you know, I wouldn't buy a first class

[23:49] ticket and that kind of thing. Anyway,

[23:52] it uh I just think it's

[23:56] most Americans think that way. It's

[23:58] basic

[23:59] fairness. And I think what you have is

[24:02] you have somewhere between

[24:06] 30 and 35 37%

[24:10] of the elected officials trying to take

[24:14] advantage of

[24:15] >> Yeah.

[24:15] >> America when it was founded.

[24:18] Got pretty lucky.

[24:20] For the first couple hundred years we

[24:22] were between

[24:24] a place called Mexico that wasn't much

[24:25] of a threat

[24:27] and a place called Canada which a great

[24:29] ally. I used to always joke and say, "If

[24:31] I leave, I'm going to Canada."

[24:32] >> Right?

[24:33] >> Atlantic Ocean on one side and the

[24:34] Pacific coast on the other. I remember

[24:37] being with Xi Jinping

[24:40] and I spent a lot of time with him

[24:42] breaking down that relationship and we

[24:45] were meeting. He said, "Why do you call

[24:46] yourself Pacific Power?" I said, "We are

[24:49] Pacific Power." And this is a true

[24:51] story. I said, "Look,

[24:55] what do you think China would be now if

[24:56] it weren't for the United States being a

[24:58] Pacific power? think you'd be where you

[24:59] are now? He looked at me. I said, "No."

[25:04] Yeah. I said, "We are more in the

[25:05] Pacific Ocean than all of China

[25:08] combined. We are a Pacific power, right?

[25:11] Period." And we are. I mean, think

[25:14] about, you know, all the way up to Oh,

[25:16] yeah. I think about it. Like, I remember

[25:18] when after World War II, all the Germans

[25:20] wanted to surrender to Americans, not

[25:22] Russians, because they knew in America

[25:24] they'd get a fair shot.

[25:25] >> Bingo. Bingo. Bingo. I remember reading

[25:27] a book about some Japanese prisoners

[25:30] that came that were captured and came to

[25:32] America and the first day at the meal

[25:35] they were given meat and they thought oh

[25:37] this is a trick it's poison meat don't

[25:38] eat it you know then they saw everybody

[25:40] eating it and they realized oh well

[25:42] maybe it's not poison you know and then

[25:44] they were drinking Coca-Cola and eating

[25:45] hamburgers and one of the one of the

[25:47] Japanese who spoke English asked the

[25:49] prison guard why do you treat us so well

[25:52] and the prison guard said cuz someday

[25:54] we're going to be friends and you know I

[25:56] like that kind of

[25:57] >> by the way. Absolutely

[25:59] >> like that kind of thinking.

[26:00] >> Oh, you know I uh

[26:03] everybody thought I was crazy when I was

[26:05] president.

[26:06] You have this horrible situation that

[26:08] lasted for decades where the South

[26:11] Koreans

[26:13] are allies of the Japanese that hated

[26:15] each other and ended up getting the

[26:17] South Koreans and the Japanese to bury

[26:21] the hatchet at Camp David 60 years

[26:24] later.

[26:24] >> Yeah. And that made us a hell of a lot

[26:27] more secure, strong.

[26:28] >> Yeah.

[26:30] >> Look, the one thing that really bothers

[26:32] me about where

[26:35] many of my Republican friends are, even

[26:36] the ones that aren't crazy,

[26:39] is they really underestimate the value

[26:41] of alliances.

[26:42] >> Right.

[26:43] >> The reason why we're so secure is

[26:45] because of NATO, for God's sake.

[26:47] >> Yeah.

[26:48] >> Attack on one's attack on all. What

[26:50] happened on 9/11? Who's the first guys

[26:51] that came to our NATO?

[26:53] >> Right.

[26:55] Well, Mr. President, thanks for letting

[26:57] me drive your Corvette. I really

[26:58] appreciate it.

[26:59] >> Well, I tell you, you're a good driver,

[27:00] man. I don't think I'd let anybody drive

[27:01] his D.

[27:02] >> There you go.

[27:03] >> And uh besides, when we get back to the

[27:06] garage, maybe I can drive your Corvette.

[27:08] >> You want You want to drive mine?

[27:10] >> Yeah. Will Secret Service allow them?

[27:13] >> You have to warn you. I might be tempted

[27:15] to jump on and get off the property.

[27:17] Well,

[27:18] >> all right. Well, let's

[27:21] let's see what happens when we get back.

[27:23] Okay.

[27:24] Well, I got to enjoy driving your

[27:25] Corvette. It was a lot of fun, Mr.

[27:27] President.

[27:27] >> You get to drive yours.

[27:29] >> You want to drive this one?

[27:30] >> I'd like to drive that one. I'm a good

[27:32] driver.

[27:33] >> Um, all right. Yeah. Here you go. You

[27:38] want me to go with you?

[27:39] >> I'd rather go by myself.

[27:41] >> Well, here. Go ahead.

[27:43] >> All right. It's got,250 horsepower.

[27:45] >> Is that all?

[27:47] >> That's not my search. I don't want all

[27:48] my hair to blow away. You know what I

[27:49] mean?

[27:50] >> All right, man. You see you in a couple

[27:52] days.

[27:53] couple of days.

[28:03] It's a secret servant. See y'all.
