Jace Becomes a Villain in Reality Fracture
45sThe shocking twist of a beloved hero turning villain sparks intense debate and curiosity among fans.
▶ Play ClipThis video covers the MagicCon Amsterdam preview panel, revealing the Reality Fracture set and the 2027 Magic lineup. It introduces the Echoverse, a twisted reality created by Jace, featuring alternate versions of iconic planeswalkers and new mechanics like mirrored pairs. The panel also unveils three new 2027 sets: Noctis (underwater plane), Kamigawa: Titan Breach (mechs vs. monsters), and a new Zhalfir (Afrofantasy).
Reality Fracture is the end of the current story arc, created by Jace pushing his powers too far to rewrite reality. It introduces the Echoverse, an alternate multiverse.
The Lorwyn five (Ajani, Jace, Liliana, Chandra, Garruk) are all involved in the same story for the first time, with alternate Echoverse versions.
Jace becomes the antagonist, trying to replace reality with his unstable Echoverse. His card has four abilities, referencing Jace, the Mind Sculptor.
Every pack contains a mirrored pair: two versions of the same character (one from our multiverse, one from the Echoverse) with different colors and abilities.
Hex Haven is the inverse of Strixhaven, a military academy for Jace's plan. It introduces allied color schools with the 'prepared' mechanic.
Examples include Enlightened Confidant (white version of Dark Confidant) and Crater Claw Colossus (red version of Craterhoof Behemoth).
First 2027 set, an underwater plane without flying. Features merfolk and new evasion mechanic. Releases February 5, 2027.
Second 2027 set, combining Kamigawa and Ikoria in a mechs vs. monsters conflict. Releases June 4, 2027.
Third 2027 set, a return to Zhalfir with Afrofantasy theme, co-created with cultural consultants. Releases October 1, 2027.
Four MagicCons in 2027: Detroit (Feb), Tokyo (May), Las Vegas (Aug), Amsterdam (Dec).
The panel sets up an exciting future for Magic with the Reality Fracture set offering a 'what-if' multiverse, and 2027 introducing three diverse new planes. The story arc concludes with Jace's villainous turn, while the game expands with new mechanics and global events.

[25:14] awesome things. What you don't know is they're not actually doing awesome things. It's me yelling at them on a microphone telling them to do stuff. We have our fabulous uh team here. So, I'm going to ask something from you [music]
[25:26] real quick. If you called sick to work today or you're here with someone you're not supposed to be with and happen to like Coldplay, you're in the wrong spot. [music] So, here's what we want to do. On the
[25:39] count of three, I want you to yell, clap, and cheer and rise up in your seats and throw your hands in the air. Very simple to do. It's going to look great on camera, and it's going to make sure that all of our friends [music]
[25:51] from Wizards of the Coast backstage are comfortable and ready to come on stage. Can you help me with that? Yes or yes? Even you guys way upstairs. We're going to do it, too. Just don't fall over the railing. All right. Ready? On three.
[26:07] It's going to look awesome. Hang on. [music] Sorry. I'm going to do it for myself, too.
[26:20] All right. Magic comes Amsterdam. Are you ready for a show? 1 2 3 you ready for a show? 1 2 3 >> [music]
[26:39] we're going to pretend we're fist pumping to a really great song while he switches [music] lenses. So, we're going to do it on the beat of two and four. instrument? Keep your hand up. Look at these people.

[27:18] the most amazing thing [music] on stage right now.
[27:33] American screaming at us on the microphone to do these things and we did them anything else. Hey, do me a favor. Uh give him a huge round of applause. These are some of the hardest. [music] We were
[27:49] We were we were all in Miami like 4 days ago. we were all in Miami like 4 days ago. It's great. Um, so the last thing I need from [music] you again, you're going to get to see some amazing things. You're
[28:01] going to get to see some stuff that nobody's seen before. You're going to find out when and where we're going to get to hang out again at another Magic get to hang out again at another Magic Con. So much to see in this panel. You
[28:14] y'all picked a perfect place to be. The only thing I need from you is when I say, "Are you ready for a show?" I need you to lose your ever loving minds. I need you to yell, clap, cheer, toss [music] a baby in the air, whatever. I
[28:27] want you to scare the person that walks out on the stage cuz look, little quiet office drawing very painstakingly in in Seattle. I want you to show them how much you appreciate
[28:40] their hard work. Can [music] you do that for me? Yes or yes? It's some of the only times they get to be directly with y'all. And we know you love magic because you're here. Again, remember why you're here this weekend.
[28:53] You cannot see everything. You do not have that time. You cannot buy money. [music] But you can meet new people. So my challenge to all of you before you leave here, first priority, play at least one
[29:08] game while you're here, please. [music] Y'all came prepared, right? If you didn't, there's plenty of stuff to buy out there. >> So, please play one game and at least meet one new person. Can you do that?
[29:22] Yes or yes? If you can do that, we can keep growing [music] this community and we can keep coming back here. Would you like us to come back here? [music] All y'all got to do is show up. So,
[29:35] Magic Amsterdam, I have one final question for you. [music] Who's ready question for you. [music] Who's ready for a show?
[29:48] welcome presenter, broadcaster, and DJ. Give it up for Jack Saunders.
[30:01] noise for yourselves. Come on. Hello to you at home as well. Thank you you've stayed up past your bedtime, you're eating your breakfast or whatever it is. This is such a huge and exciting moment. My name is Jack Saunders. You
[30:15] will usually find me hosting radio shows and TV shows in the UK, interviewing some of the biggest musicians and artists around the world, uh, DJing festivals, but when I'm not doing any of that, it is all about playing magic. And
[30:29] three things you should know. Yes, absolutely. Come on. It's all about playing magic. [cheering and applause] And three things you should know. I love playing black. >> Yeah. Who likes dragons?
[30:42] >> Me, too. And hey, enough of the booze. Thank you very much. And I have an unhealthy addiction with opening Ether Drift. It was a sleeper set and I'll hear no bad words about it.
[30:56] it. I'm not hearing it. But we're in for such an exciting time here. We are going to be diving into literally the future of Magic the Gathering. Uh, we have a set called
[31:08] year. Who's excited for Reality Fracture? Not only that, [cheering] not only that, but we are going to dive not only that, but we are going to dive into what is coming in 2027 for Magic
[31:23] the Gathering. >> Ooh, indeed. Ooh, just wait until you see it up there. Loads of exciting stuff to get involved with. Uh, universities beyond sets will be mentioned, but we are keeping full focus to in universe
[31:36] are keeping full focus to in universe magic. Reality fracture. Yes, [cheering] [applause] as you'll hopefully know or maybe not, reality fracture is the end of the story
[31:48] arc. So, it's all about in universe magic and we need two very important people to come out here and help us dissect this. So, please from Wizard of the Coast, welcome. Give a massive round of applause. Amsterdam and you at home
[32:01] of applause. Amsterdam and you at home to Roy Graham and Mark Rosewater. to Roy Graham and Mark Rosewater. [music and cheering]
[32:21] people will know you, some won't. Uh Roy, let's start with you. Describe what >> Hi everyone. I'm Roy Graham. Uh, and I'm the head of story for Magic. Come on. Uh, I'm Mark Rosewater. I'm the head designer for Magic. Uh, and this is my,
[32:38] uh, 31st year making Magic. Uh, but for today, I led the vision design for [cheering] [applause]
[32:53] and guide us through it. So, should we dive into Reality Fracture? waiting to talk about >> Let's do it. Come on. It's time. Reality Fracture is the result of former hero Jace pushing his powers too far in an
[33:07] attempt to create something better. But will he succeed? We're going to break the story uh and give you a taste of what's to come. And it doesn't get much bigger than the original Five Planaines Walkers of Lind returning. Roy, kick us
[33:22] off. Who are they and why are they now coming back? Yeah. Uh, let's get the Lurwin five up on screen here. You know them, you love them. Here they You know them, you love them. Here they are. These five are Magic's first ever
[33:36] printed planes walkers. And uh, kudos to to Mark and the team at the time. They really knocked it out of the park. These guys are are they're so uh, [music] perfectly representative of the five colors of mana. Uh, we have a Johnny, we
[33:50] have Jace, Liliana, Shandra, and Garrick. And for the first time ever, all five of these characters are involved in the same story. They're all like colliding with each other. Uh first time since Lurin, but they weren't even
[34:05] really in the story. No, no. So here's basically what [music] planes walks have existed from very early on. Urza's mentioned in we're like, "Oh, they're too powerful.
[34:18] We we can't put them on cards. They're like godlike beings." So we did a thing called a mending during the time spiral where we depowered them. Uh and then the idea came up what if we finally made cards out of them. So the original plan
[34:30] was [music] in future site on the future shifted sheet we were going to make planes walkers show up for the very first time from the future you know and we didn't solve it in time. We weren't happy enough. So we pushed them back and
[34:42] so they ended up [music] being in the very first set after future site which in the story because we were we still were trying to figure them out. So, this is the very first time all of them are in the story together.
[34:55] but yeah, first time. >> Yeah. Yeah. I mean, they've all they all been in the story together. Um, but never never all at once. So, this is uh yeah, it's very cool. >> I can feel the adrenaline excitement
[35:10] back together. Let's do it. You've known him as memory adept, an architect of thought, a wilder of mysteries, a mind sculptor, and so much more. But Vin's prodigy is going by another name these days. Say hello to the theorist Jace
[35:26] Bellerin. Come on. [cheering] Oh yeah. Um Roy, let's start with you. Right. Uh,
[35:38] Um Roy, let's start with you. Right. Uh, so Jace, mind mage, powerful plains walker, and now villain, [music] >> Guys, can we just have one moment for Roy? He's explaining [laughter] awesome
[35:51] stuff. I know it's exciting. >> I know it's exciting. Just a little bit Go for it, Roy. >> So, uh, Jay has obviously been through a lot, right? He spent a a long time fighting uh all sorts of villains from
[36:04] the Eldrazi [music] to Niclbolus to the Forexians and finally came to the revelation that there's no beating evil. You have to erase it altogether from the
[36:16] multiverse. He set out to rewrite reality as we know it. But the only problem is that his echoververse is unstable and the way to make it stable is to replace reality as we know it. overly his echo verse over the
[36:31] together. >> And so, Mark, how have you chosen to represent the multiverse manipulation of Jace in the mechanics of the card? >> Well, let's talk about the card. Okay. So, [music] when we first made the
[36:43] planes walkers, they had three abilities, but we said, could we just Uh, and we made that when we first made them. And then the very first planes walker to ever have four abilities was Jace the Mind Sculptor. Uh so obviously
[36:59] he had to have four abilities. We gave him a static ability and a pretty cool one. He gets to draw a card for every opponent's turn. Uh and so that's I mean even more cards. [music] You know he loves Jace loves knowing things and so
[37:14] card drawing has always been a staple for him. Uh his plus one he makes illusions. He's an illusionist. He uh [music] bounces things. He does all the look at his ultimate. He draws three cards. So, I mean, if you like drawing
[37:28] [cheering] >> Well, Jace Jace might be the antagonist, [laughter] >> A master manipulator. I think Mark is >> He'll manipulate your games, though. >> Okay. Next up, he's been venient,
[37:45] unyielding, steadfast, a valiant protector, and even a sleeper agent. But now, let us introduce to you a Johnny, both resolute and unrelenting.
[37:58] both resolute and unrelenting. Roy, talk us through it. Let's see him. Oh, yeah. So, a Johnny, as as uh story fans among you will know, a Johnny was exiled from his pride for his white fur back on Nia.
[38:15] The only person who accepted him, who loved him, who showed him respect was his brother Jazal, which made it all the more painful when Jazal was murdered. This sent the Ajani that we know, the Ajani from our multiverse, into a long
[38:29] Ajani from our multiverse, into a long period of of wrath and revenge, hunting down uh the people that he thought were responsible for his brother's murder. But eventually he he pulled out of it. He uh calmed down a little bit and he
[38:41] became the mentor and leader that we know and love today. know and love today. Jayce's version of Ajani never exactly got over it. Uh, and now roams the Echoverse as a living avatar of
[38:55] vengeance. Uh, punishing any that he deems worthy of his punishment. >> So, we have a white Ajani, which people will be used to, but also here a red Ajani. Mark, how how do the mechanics between the two contrast?
[39:09] >> Yeah. >> Okay. So, let's look at the two Ajanis. So, we have the white a Johnny that we all know and love from our multiverse and we have the red a Johnny from the Echoverse.
[39:24] Okay. So, one of the things we've talked about this, every single play booster you open will have a mirrored pair. What that means is there's one character that that means is there's one character that shows up on two cards in every pack. Uh
[39:36] it could be a planaineswalker, it could be a creature. And this is a perfect example of what we did. So when we designed these, we wanted to feel related. These are both a Johnny. So if you notice, for example, they both have
[39:48] activated abilic abilities. Um, but a Johnny Resolute is is about doing damage. [music] They both make two twos, but different tutus. And they both have emblems and they care about what [music] or actually
[40:02] just a Johnny Reszle has a emblem, but they both have things that sort of build the game in their thing. Uh, Johnny wants you to gain life. Uh Johnny Unrelenting wants to do damage. And so they go in very different decks. And
[40:14] that's one of the cool things about the set is that you get a Johnny, but you get two a Johnny's. And the other really neat thing about this, if you look on the red Ajani, [music] do you see that little symbol? That is the Echover
[40:26] we see it? >> On R. >> Eric and Secrets of [music] Strick Haven. So that shows you and tells you that's the Echovos version. And that one of the really fun things about designing
[40:39] this set is getting to make those paired characters was infinitely fun. And we'll see we'll see a few more today. So at Vegas Magic Con in April, who was there? >> Anyone was in Vegas in April? Just a few of you. Yes, over there. Love you guys.
[40:54] Uh [snorts] we introduce you to Blue Shandra. Shandra Chill of Compliance. Now we get to show you her in more familiar colors. This is Shandra, Torch of Defiance. [music] Now we have both Roy here. Tell us about their
[41:09] characteristics and how they compare. >> Right. So Shandra a as uh some of you might know the great tragedy of Shandra's life is that her father Kieran Nar was killed by the tyrannical consulate that once ruled her home plane
[41:23] consulate that once ruled her home plane of Avishkar. Uh the the good news of [music] uh Echoverse Shandra's life is that her dad wasn't killed. Um, the bad news is that he wasn't killed because he worked
[41:36] for the tyrannical consulate uh that killed him in our multiverse and she chose to follow in his footsteps [music] uh keeping order, keeping compliance and uh keeping order, keeping compliance and suppressing uh any rebellion on her home
[41:51] plane. Anything that would threaten the careful order arranged [music] by Jace and Mark um Shandra torture defiance that feels familiar. [music] >> Yeah. So you we did show these two cards uh in in uh Las Vegas, but I just want
[42:05] designed them. [music] So obviously we have red, we have blue. Both of them care about the top of your library, but [music] red Shandra is, you know, uh impulsively drawing. Blue Shandra is surveilling. They both make mana for
[42:20] their plus one, but one in a red way, one in a blue way. They both deal with creatures, but Shandra's doing damage to them. and uh blue Shandra is stunning them. [music] Uh and they both make emblems, but the idea is it's Shandra.
[42:33] It's similar. They're parallel, but [music] they're very different. And set as we do the what if thing is you get to play with Shandra in ways you've never played, in decks you've never played. I don't know how many monol
[42:47] Probably none. But uh now you have that chance to do that. >> And a really nice art treatment uh on these [music] cards as well, Mark. >> Yeah. So all the art what we did is one we asked one artist to draw them [music]
[43:00] before we're showing you the cards. So they're always um they come together and treatments. So let's show you a special treatment here. >> Yeah. So these are borderless with a a different piece of art. Um [music] and
[43:15] is making a lot of fun collectibles. And so we know you had seen the other one never seen before. >> Those borderless echoed pairs look stunning. love him. So, look, next in our law in five uh has been the veil and
[43:30] the dark realms. A defiant necromancer, a dread horde general. Do you know where >> I can hear the excitement. >> And even our very last hope now she comes to us faultless and repentant. Make some noise for Liliana.
[43:51] >> Yeah. A lot of people's favorite. That makes sense. one. >> So, Liliana, obviously Magic's most >> So, Liliana, obviously Magic's most iconic anti-hero, most iconic [music] um
[44:03] let's say morally morally challenged, morally questionable. Uh uh what would she be like, though, if her brother Josu had never died? That was the moment that ignited her spark, that led to her practicing necromancy, that led her into
[44:19] contact with the first of many, let's say, questionable entities uh that she made arrangements with. Uh the answer is what you see here on the left of the screen. A Liliana that stayed with her studies as a healer, that stayed in
[44:35] studies as a healer, that stayed in Benalia and became a noble. She becomes honestly a bit of a goodie two shoes. uh but one who is nonetheless quite powerful. And Mark, I can't help but notice uh we've got a really kind of
[44:49] defending feeling, you know, like the the blocking, the shield is up, you two? >> Well, you guys happen to want to see the [cheering] >> Okay, so as I said before, the pairs are
[45:03] always the same character. Sometimes they're planaines walkers, sometimes they're creatures. In the Echoverse, Liliana is not a Planaineswalker. And in our multiverse, Liliana's lost her spark, so she's currently not a
[45:16] paired and they're both legendary creatures. Liliana the fallless, the white Liliana, she cares about creatures entering play cuz she wants to gain life. Liliana, the Repentant, also wants creatures come in play, but because she
[45:31] wants to mill cards. And so, each one of them is doing their own thing. Like I said, that's the fun of the set that we get to see Liliana in a way you've never seen her before. Um, and if you guys remember when we did um back in Origins
[45:46] that Liliana was once a healer that she started as a white character if you guys remember and all Jace was doing like Jace saved Shandra's dad, saved her right? >> Yeah. What's so wrong with all of this?
[46:00] It's not like he totally messed up uh the next character that we're going to see super badly. [laughter] >> Uh but anyway, that like I said, the fun fun to make. Can we go on? I want to see
[46:12] next one. Looks last and certainly not least, and we actually haven't seen him for a whole while, have we? Magic's very own Apex Predator, Garrick, is >> Yes. Oh, yeah. We got some Garrett fans, baby. [laughter]
[46:27] Um, Roy, how has the echo verse of reality fracture affected him? >> Well, Mark teased it a little bit. Not great. [laughter] Uh, not great. Derek's always had a beast in him. Uh, [clears throat] hungry and, uh, needing
[46:42] to like sate itself with that next hunt, [music] the next beast that he brings down, greater and greater prey, all of that. Uh, the Garrick of the Echoverse found another way to sate that hunger. uh using an artifact that some of you
[46:59] might recognize. Some story fans might know. A little something known as the chain veil. Uh something that cursed Garrick in our multiverse wants to be an interplaner serial killer. This time he dons it willingly.
[47:12] >> Mark, I can't help but feel this one in particular might have been a real fun >> This was actually a very fun one to design, but I don't know if we need to enough cards, right? You need more cards. Yeah.
[47:25] Garrick up on screen. >> They're not even taking the bait. They [snorts] >> Okay, we got Garrick Veiled Butcher and >> Okay, we got Garrick Veiled Butcher and Garrick Curse Breaker. So, obviously,
[47:38] uh, the black Garrick veiled Butcher. Um, both of them care about creatures. Both of them do make 44 beasts, but they handle it very differently. And once again, you see Garrick in Black is using black tools and doing black things.
[47:53] and doing green things. Garrick Kursbreaker is a lot like Garrick we've expect Garrick to do, but Garrick Veil Butcher a little bit different, a little bit meaner. Uh and both of them Yeah. Just a little bit meaner. So that's the
[48:09] thing I loved about making the set was that it is so much fun playing with what if of taking things and seeing other versions of them. Uh and we might see a >> all these planes walkers are making me want to rebuild my Commodore Guff deck.
[48:24] That was my first ever Commander I owned. That's a heavy one for the first one, isn't it? It might be time to make a comeback. Look, um, this is great, but a comeback. Look, um, this is great, but it's not just the Lwin five, is it? We
[48:37] >> Every pack has a >> Yeah, there's plenty of other stuff to get excited about. Some newer characters as well, including the very teeniest of tiniest of multiverse or
[48:51] so tiny. >> Well, let's uh take a look at what Jayce has done to Tiny Bones [laughter] in this multiverse.
[49:07] Yeah. In uh in the Echoverse, uh Tiny Bones is not so tiny anymore. Uh meet Titan Bones, [laughter] who is uh not only not tiny anymore, not a thief anymore either. He's [music] an honest man or skeleton
[49:22] or you know whatever he is. >> I like how Titan Bone still has the tiny >> Little tiny head. >> Yeah, that's important. >> So Mark, the mechanics of these two. Can we see the cards and and how they
[49:34] the things that was really fun about this is normally the way I describe it is in vision design we do something crazy and in set design does the slightly calmer version of it. But this is a set where we did something crazy
[49:47] and they just kept it. Uh, and so one of the things we said is what pairs could we make? What cool things could we do? And so one of the idea we we came up with a lot of crazy ideas. One of them was in design we had tiny bones and we
[49:59] called them Megabones. [laughter] Um, and the idea was let's really like how just [music] do a completely different take on them. And I'll be honest, I didn't think Megabones was going to make it to the finished product, but he did.
[50:13] Um, and here what we can see is Tiny Bones. He's what you know. He's a thief. He steals stuff from your opponent's hand. Uh, but Titan Bones, he's he's kinder. Now, he also interacts with discard, but he interacts with your own
[50:27] discard rather than your opponent's discard. And so, Tiny Bones is tiny. Titan Bones is not tiny. And so, the we have a lot of fun playing off of lots of different things. So, every pack you open, you'll see characters and every
[50:40] different ways. And that's one of the fun things about the pairs is we did a always characters, so they're either creatures or planaines walkers, but we really did fun things with them. Uh the
[50:54] Echoverse version is not what you will expect some of the time. And we really things. >> Tight Bones is great, but justice for me Megabones at some point. Look, let's turn our attention now to Hex Haven. is
[51:08] basically the inverse version of Stricks Haven which was created by Jace Roy. What are the differences between the two, right? Uh so Stricks Haven of course everyone knows and loves. Stricks Haven is the multiverse's foremost uh
[51:24] place of learning for young mages looking to sharpen their skills, make their way in the world. Hex Haven, of course, has a very different goal, which is helping Jayce's master plan succeed. And to that end, it's um a little more
[51:40] And to that end, it's um a little more ruthless, a a little uh more uh ruthless, a a little uh more uh nononsense. Uh the uh students of Hex Haven are actually referred to as cadetses uh in their the tokens that
[51:53] they create. Uh so a cool little bit of like typing to reinforce [music] that. >> So it's kind of military then. >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's It's sort of a messed up dystopian military academy >> and and the mechanics of these cuz these
[52:07] >> Yeah. So, one of the things that happened when Stricks Haven came out, the notes I got was people going, "Oh, this is so awesome. We love it. So, when are we getting the ally schools of Stricks Haven?" And I was like, "There
[52:20] That wasn't a thing. We we we used everything up. We didn't save anything. Uh, so when we were making the set, one of the things we wanted to do is we're characters, but what if we did what if for the setting and we realized this was
[52:34] begging [music] for us to do allied schools. Okay, Hex Haven is the allied schools. So what we did is we took each school and we kept one color. So the history school kept white but added blue to make it ally. The math school kept
[52:50] blue but added black. The language school kept black but added red. The [music] art school kept red but added green and the science school kept green but added white. And so now we have an ally uh collection of schools.
[53:03] >> And so today we can show you a card from each of these schools. Starting with Fateold, the school of future history. Roy, over to you. Talk us through this one. >> Right. So the flavor of of fateold is
[53:17] it's like lorehold uh in that it's a a school of history but fateold is not so interested in looking backwards or studying the past or
[53:30] that. It's no they're all about predicting the future and identifying >> and you know then eliminating those problems problems. >> Right. And so Mark, mechanically then,
[53:45] we're looking at? >> Okay, so one of the things we wanted to do when we were doing uh Stricks Haven [music] is we just did Secrets of Stricks Haven. Anybody here play Secrets of Strick Haven?
[53:57] >> Okay, so in it we introduced a brand new mechanic called prepared and we really like prepared and so we said, okay, just because it's a different version, we still could use prepared. So what we did in this set is at common and uncommon,
[54:11] spell. There's other stuff at higher rarities. And so each school to represent the militariness that they're all doing the same thing. Um so for all doing the same thing. Um so for example, peer review is for white blue.
[54:24] example, peer review is for white blue. Um it is a spell that makes a tutu uh token a cadet as we talked about and surveills one. Why does it surveil one? Cuz they're the school of looking at the future. And as you can see on the card,
[54:37] uh, it [music] cares about when you scri scry or surveil. Um, the set has surveile, but we said scry or surveil for for backward compatibility. Um, and the idea is that you can sort of they play into what you know, but they also
[54:49] care about the future. And so, uh, it allows us to craft the, uh, the draft archetype in white blue around this prepared spell. >> Awesome flavor already. of prudent fatesir from fateold the school of
[55:03] fatesir from fateold the school of future history into theorics school of esoteric mathematics um I sort of feel like all maths is >> yeah [laughter] not compared to what the do
[55:16] >> okay fine >> the students of theorics the cadetses of theorics are all about impossible numbers uh mindbending physics [music] numbers uh mindbending physics [music] and uh something that in early design we
[55:29] called dark math. >> Is it all math? Dark math. [laughter] >> Of course, the the side effect of all of this uh mindbending meddling with the you know underlying fabric of reality for [music] the is that the students
[55:42] tend to go insane. Well, speaking of going insane, [music] so the prepared spell uh for blue black is omit variables. Now, I not I didn't point this out before. All the the uh prepared spells are hybrid. And so this
[55:57] is blue and black. So, blue and black spells can have it. It mills cards, your own cards. [music] And then, if you notice on the the card, the cards will That's part of what blue and black is doing. And you'll notice that this card
[56:10] can reprepare. So, some of the spells will be able to let you repprepare some let you do it multiple times. >> So, Stingerquill is next. That is Stingerquill, the school of painful
[56:22] words. It sounds mean, Roy. >> Yeah. Um, Jack, are you familiar with the that apherism, sticks and stones can break my bones, make words hurt you. >> Oh, right.
[56:35] >> Uh, Stinger Quill serve as Jayce's frontline troops using uh verbal magic to cut apart both the body and souls of their opponents. Yes. So, we'll see
[56:47] Black Red has vicious verse as his prepared spell. Um, so one of the things we definitely did is we did take an element of the school as you know it. The language skull, which was obviously black white in stricks haven, was the
[56:59] one of the more aggro of skulls. [music] It's still aggro here. It's using it spells to nibble away at the opponent. Um, and like I said, this spell can get reprepared. So it allows you to sort of plink away [music] at your opponent. And
[57:11] so you'll see that there definitely is overlap between what you know the schools and the new schools. There there is a through line. And so red green is constra the school of constructive arts. Now this sounds much more positive, Roy.
[57:25] Yeah. Uh how do you feel about puppets? [laughter] >> Yeah, not so great. >> Well, you might not fit in at Constari. Uh they love puppets. They the people or the cadets of Constari channel all of
[57:40] the cadets of Constari channel all of the creativity uh artistic uh inspiration all of that stuff that you might recognize from Prismari uh into more useful things like architecture, buildings uh and soldiers for Jayce's
[57:57] grand project. Uh they don't do any of the you know feelings stuff of the other arts. So, uh, Prismari, if you remember, like to cast big spells. So, the idea of ramping is carried over. So, you'll notice soul tether, which is a fair
[58:12] spell, makes a heartwood token. Notice carefully, it does not sacrifice. It is not a treasure. Uh, it is, it's permanent. And so, it makes red or green mana. And the idea is you can keep repreprearing it. You can keep making
[58:25] and bigger things. But rather than just spells, you also here can make big creatures, maybe some of which are puppets. So, and finally, we have Viger Bloom, the school of invasive healing. What can you tell us about this one,
[58:39] Roy? >> Well, Wither Bloom, their mirror, or the real multiverse version, is the school of life and death. It's about that balance, [music] that cycle. Uh, Vigor Bloom dares to ask the question of why
[58:53] die at all? Why ever die? [music] It's a good question. Not bad. Uh, no. If if you get close to dying, vigorloom will just put some of their invasive plants into you, as you can see on this card. Uh stitch you up and you know, you'll be
[59:09] recognize yourself when they're done with you. [laughter] >> So, uh this repair spell makes a good point. Uh some of the stuff carries over. So, obviously, seed suture put a plus counter on target creature. You
[59:21] that's still there. Witherloom is all about life, but there's a new component. component on the main card. You can see it grants teachers plus one plus1 counters vigilance. And so not only are there carriers over what the spell
[59:36] school used to do, there are new things that we bring in. So [music] every new blended together. >> So Reality Fracture is going to bring us Hex Haven, uh the alternative school [music]
[59:50] um of Reality Fracture and this Echoverse that Jace has created. How deep does this go though, Roy? The the changes that Jayce is making [music] here, how far did you go with it? >> Well, the changes, as I think you guys
[1:00:03] have seen, go all the way through the multiverse. And [music] the temptation was definitely there for us on the story team to to go really wide with it. uh you know to see a Miridan that had never been completed by Forexia, to see uh an
[1:00:18] Amanet that had never been corrupted [music] by Bolas, to see a Zendicar that had never used uh been used as a prison to contain the Altrazi. Uh but we realized pretty early on when working on some of those outlines that we needed to
[1:00:33] keep the story uh actually intimate. we needed that the heart of it was actually on Jace and these people that used to be his friends and that were now opposed to him. Um so the ultimate story ends up being really character focused. I mean I
[1:00:48] closer the characters the closer to the set and and the mechanics and everything Roy but um Mark there were some interesting color pairings right and so how did you navigate that? So, um, we previously did a what if set many years
[1:01:01] ago called Planer Chaos. Uh, and in that set, we really messed with the color pie in a way we shouldn't. Uh, and so we learned from that. The big lesson is don't do that. Um, so what we did in this set is we do not the color pie. If
[1:01:16] abilities. We're making blue Shandra, she uses blue abilities. And so we do a lot of cool things. We stretch creatively. We do a lot of differences, but it's still the color pie used as the color pie is used. There's some creative
[1:01:29] a little bit of bending, but nothing. It's it's the colors as you know the colors, but showing very different things. [snorts] Would you would you >> Yes, please show us. >> Would you guys like an example? So,
[1:01:42] >> Would you guys like an example? So, okay. So, so far we've talked about um pairings, [snorts] but we also have cool one-of-s in the set. [music] So, as an you guys, uh many years ago, we used to have an event called the Magic
[1:01:55] Invitational uh in which the winner used to make a card. Now, the world champion does it. Uh and there was someone who won named Bob Mar Jr. Uh and he got to make a card. He chose to make Dark Confidant. Now, Dark Confidant is not in
[1:02:11] Confidant. Now, Dark Confidant is not in the set, but we said we're doing a what if world. What if we took Dark Confident and made it white? Who would like to see >> Yeah. >> Okay. Meet Enlightened Confidant.
[1:02:26] So, like Dark Confidant, it's two mana. It's a 2-1. And as you can see, it does interact with life and card draw, but not in a black way. You're not spending
[1:02:38] life to draw like Blackwood. No, you're gaining life and using that as a means to get cards. Uh, and that one of the things about the set that's really important is we're doing a lot of fun things. These things in a vacuum are
[1:02:52] cool [music] and exciting. You don't need to know about Dark Confidant, but if you do, there's lots and lots of Easter eggs. And that this set, it's not just what if pairs. It's what if individual cards like we've talked about
[1:03:04] characters, we've talked about setting. We're going to go do other things, other card types like, you know, not just not just creatures. You'll see other things. Although this is a creature. So, we're also taking things back to the past,
[1:03:17] basically cards we've already had and and and reskinning them in a way for for >> Yeah. I mean, a lot of what we're doing is we're saying, how would we do this is we're saying, how would we do this card if we just if if in Jay's world,
[1:03:29] Dark Confidant wasn't a black creature, it was a white creature, what would it >> And some amazing new arts to go with some of these cards as well, right, >> Yes. Um, so, uh, we have a special treatment in the set, which we did show
[1:03:42] off once before called the broken mirror treatment. Uh, and the way it works is you see the card in the thing, but pieces of the mirror show you the other version, our version from the the normal multiverse. And this is a special
[1:03:57] set. >> So, should we show them a few more of >> Yes. >> Yeah. >> Come on. Let's do it. Oh, we like big green fatties. Uh, one of the all-time
[1:04:12] favorites is crater crater hoof behemoth. So, you all know what a green crater hoof behemoth looks like. But how about
[1:04:24] a red one? >> So, let's see the red one. It is crater claw colossus >> and it's a puppet. [laughter] Um, and so the idea is it taps into what uh the green card does, but that card
[1:04:40] cared about creatures. This card cares about artifacts. And so that's one of the neat things about this set that we're taking shells of really interesting designs and then tweaking them. So now here's something you can
[1:04:53] put in a completely different deck. So it has a lot of like it's familiar but different. And that's a lot of the fun of this ad [music] is you get to see us cards. >> I'd love to see the shattered mirror
[1:05:07] version of this. And we got it. >> Let's see the shattered mirror version. >> It's so cool. >> That's so so cool. That amazing. I mean, while there are a lot of ways to enter Jayce's quite chaotic and wild
[1:05:23] um there is one in particular that I think is going to get people really, really excited. Mark, um should we tell them about the secret layer bundle? >> Sure. Uh okay. So, we talked a lot about doing what if. We did what if
[1:05:37] characters, we did what if settings. Uh there's a lot of different we also approached that to the product line itself. So, this is the secret layer bundle. It will be available on the secret layer but also in uh WPN stores.
[1:05:52] Uh we are experimenting with how secret layer works. Uh, and this set you can open up. In the set you get two collector boosters, you get six play collector boosters, you get six play boosters. You get 20 uh foil traditional
[1:06:05] borderless lands. You get a spin down and you get a special promo pack that is two out of 10 mythics that have a special treat art treatment in secret layer style. One of the things Secret Layer does really well is we let artists
[1:06:20] really invent and do really creative things. So, can we see some examples? showed you before, but you can see the secret layer version of them. >> Any favorites on there for you two? >> I like I like I like the Jace a lot.
[1:06:34] >> It's the Colossus. >> It's the Crater Claw. >> Guys, while you're soaking that up, um, we're nearly done with Reality Fracture, but I do want to emphasize [music] how big this set and this moment is
[1:06:46] going to be. We are literally going to be part of a historic moment in Magic the Gathering and its [music] story. And seeing as I have the head of storytelling literally to my right hand side right now, I would like to ask one
[1:06:58] big final question for everyone in the audience here at Amsterdam. For those at eating their breakfast or, you know, skipping work for some reason or another, what the hell is going to happen, Roy? I can't tell you, man. You
[1:07:12] know that. But I I will say uh this is the end of an arc that started all the w all the way back with Wilds of Eldrain. But I think the story threads we [music] ultimately bring in are really going to
[1:07:25] surprise fans. They go back a lot farther than what I think people are >> And my journalism degree wasn't a total waste of time. We got something there, are super awesome. >> Yes, they are awesome.
[1:07:38] >> They're awesome. And so are these guys. Make some noise. >> Absolutely pleasure. Stay tuned for the magic story to start dropping at the end
[1:07:51] >> Love it. Nice. There you go. I got another one out of you. [laughter] >> Make some noise for Mark. [applause]
[1:08:03] fracture? [cheering] Feels good. Should we turn our attention to the future though? >> Magic the Gathering in 2027. That's what we're going to talk about now. So, please welcome to the stage Jackie Jones
[1:08:18] please welcome to the stage Jackie Jones and Tequil Gordon. >> Cool. >> Okay. So, Magic in [music] 2027, we're
[1:08:32] you do? >> Yeah. So, I'm Jackie Jones. I'm the VP of Creative for Magic. Uh, so I lead the team responsible for Magic's world building, our storytelling, and our visual identity. So if you've got a
[1:08:48] favorite Magic plane, character, piece of card art, my team gets to contribute to all that amazing stuff. >> Perfect. executive producer for Magic. I'm in charge of uh, set development. So I lead
[1:09:03] sets as we uh, create them. in the past. Uh some of my sets included The Lost Caverns of Exalon, Bloomber, and Magic Final Fantasy. Uh [cheering] uh I also work on our uh collectibility strategy. So I'm on the team that
[1:09:19] booster and I get to work with so many amazing people within the studio every single day. So happy to to see you all and be here today. Make some noise, and be here today. Make some noise, guys. [cheering and applause]
[1:09:33] makes this part of the panel particularly exciting. Uh, we're going to take a deep dive into three beautifully crafted worlds and stories that begin the next arc in the Magic the Gathering story, and we're going to tell
[1:09:49] Gathering story, and we're going to tell you all about next year's Magic Cons. >> It's exciting, and there's a lot to talk about. Jackie, just feelings first off. >> It's huge. I've been waiting all week for this moment. I'm like, "Oh, yeah. So
[1:10:01] excited to share with everybody." You know, as I sit here and look out at this very large crowd right now, it's amazing. You know, when we started doing MagicCons almost 4 years ago now, which is hard to believe, you know, I [music]
[1:10:14] think we dreamed that it would grow into something as amazing as this, but I just how special Magicons would become to us. you know, when we're working on the project behind the scenes, it's just so awesome to get to get face to face
[1:10:29] celebrate the thing that we love together. Um, and I feel like we have Every time we have them, we're like, can we can we do this more? Um, so I'm actually excited to get to share. We are
[1:10:42] >> More Magicons. >> Yeah. We are adding another Magicon to >> Yeah. We are adding another Magicon to the lineup. Yeah. >> That's huge >> to kill. Quick feelings from you as
[1:10:57] >> Amazing. I love Magic Con. It's so much fun to come here. Magic Con is so central. So again, we are expanding to four total Magic Con starting in 2027. Uh we will be revealing them today as we talk through uh the calendar. And uh
[1:11:10] I'll give you a hint. We are going to a place uh we have never been before. >> Yeah. [laughter] Come on. I mean, I personally love it first Magic right now. It's literally our first day and I'm having the best
[1:11:24] time already. Um, [music] uh, new exciting sets, uh, like we're talking about right now, events that we get to do. Uh, I've heard about Crocs. There are magic Crocs. Is Is anyone wearing their magic Crocs?
[1:11:37] their magic Crocs? >> No one's wearing a magic [laughter] magic. >> Yes. Rattle at them. Uh, aside from that get excited [music] about today? >> Yeah, before we get to 2027, coming
[1:11:53] >> Yeah, before we get to 2027, coming later this year is the next iteration. called Mystery Booster Commander Edition. Uh, this set is entirely
[1:12:06] designed for Commander Draft. They are 20 card packs. uh as well as 59 new 20 card packs. uh as well as 59 new mechanically uh sorry 59 new mechanical commander. >> Yeah, I think we Yeah, [laughter]
[1:12:27] that, we actually do have some cars to preview. [music] >> Yeah. All right, so let's start with the first one. It's actually a throw way, way, way back all the way to Homelands. [laughter]
[1:12:44] They are a five uh sorry, a red a red five mana red creature that allows you to take control of artifacts um from other players on uh the battlefield. If uh that then gets untapped with haste, if that goes to the graveyard, they get
[1:12:58] powered up. Uh, and the longtime Voros fans will see some throw uh, some some callbacks to Ebony Rhino and Joven's Ferrets in the card art there. Uh, which I think is going to be super super fun. And where can we get a hold of this uh,
[1:13:12] of these mystery boosters? Um, so you can get a hold of these at Gen Con um, as well as Magic Con uh, later this year and Festival in a Box. Um, but not all of the cards in Mystery Booster Commander are throwbacks. Uh some of
[1:13:28] them um involve a brand new mechanic that we have called [music] rulebreaker. So let's take a look at our next card called Talib.
[1:13:46] And it says whenever you cast an instant, you can make an otter. And it has this new ability called rule breaker that allows you to play incident sorcery spells uh of an additional color not in your commander's color identity
[1:14:00] as well as basic lands. Um we worked super closely with the commander format panel on this. This was a recommendation from them. Uh so we're super excited uh to bring this card to life. Look, if uh if Jovin and Chandler can make a
[1:14:15] honest, Jackie, anything is really possible at this point, isn't it? >> True. Um, but I know lots of people talk about the the the the Pro Tour Hall of Fame. Um, can we expect a return for the Pro Tour Hall of Fame?
[1:14:28] >> Yeah, [music] I know people have been asking for that for a long time and I'm very excited to get to share [music] that it is coming back this year. that it is coming back this year. >> Yeah.
[1:14:45] with the what the Pro Tour Hall of Fame is, it honors and celebrates [music] the best players that have ever played the game, which is incredible. You know, I know for pro players themselves, and for those who love pro play, this is
[1:14:57] coming back. Um, I think we're going to be sharing some more information about the return of the Hall of Fame on Sunday, uh, on the Pro Tour stream after quarterfinals. So, tune in to that for some more information. Quick question.
[1:15:11] Uh, is there a spot on the Pro Tour Hall of Fame for someone who misses all their >> Ah, it's going to be kind [laughter] of hard. little bit, but alas, there we are. Right. Who would like to see the first
[1:15:25] Right. Who would like to see the first set of 2027? [applause] >> That's a good answer. Roll the tape.
[1:15:57] underwater plane. This is something that fans have been asking us for for so >> Noctis [music] is a place of muroke civilizations in their height. It is a place of many different fantasy species all coexisting together. But it is also
[1:16:11] a place where an apocalyptic danger lurks at the bottom of the ocean. wanted to really stay grounded in traditional magic gameplay. All the expect, plus this awesome environment,
[1:16:26] all these cool creatures that you can see, and huge visual spectacles as well. high fantasy world bursting with color and cultures. Beyond the Merur folk, our
[1:16:43] set is populated with tons of other different creatures. [music] The humans here are really the outsiders. >> To place an entire world in a place where everything is buoyant, it changes the game so much at its fundamental
[1:16:56] level. The first major unique thing about Noctis is that it's the first main set release possibly ever arguably that doesn't have flying as a mechanic since actually have a brand new mechanic which I won't tell you too much about yet that
[1:17:10] is an evasive [music] mechanic that sort of takes the place of flying. We have five distinct colors that we have to pay off so it can't be a model blue set. >> There's quite a bit of diversity and variety down in the ocean. We have kelp
[1:17:23] forests for green and we have the dark abyss and we have whale falls and graveyards of bones. >> In the end, we have an experience that's set from a color balance perspective than you might initially expect. [music]
[1:17:40] discover here? >> It is so different, but that is what >> The set is just a it's just a ton of fun. [music]
[1:17:57] [cheering] >> Wow.
[1:18:17] Sorry. [laughter] I mean, that's the kind of reaction you >> Absolutely. >> When are we taking the plunge? >> I feel like you are trying to trick me into saying an ocean theme pun, which is
[1:18:31] development, the creative team constantly was trying to get me to do that, and I absolutely refused and would never take the bait.
[1:18:46] Players are going to get to take the plunge into Noctis sunken realm on plunge into Noctis sunken realm on February 5th, 2027. [cheering] >> And look, I know we've just seen a lot from that video right there, but um it
[1:19:02] was moving fast. We' we'd love to see some stills and get a real feel for for >> Yeah, I'll tell you a little bit more about it. Okay, so Noctis is this vast fully underwater plane. Um, it's got the
[1:19:16] warm shallows and then you get to dive down all the way to the dark depths of down all the way to the dark depths of the dark abyss. Um, I think the idea of underwater world is this really classic high fantasy concept. And one of the
[1:19:28] is like how do we take this idea that, you know, it's it's out there, but do it in a way that's really unique to magic. And I think one of the best ways to approach that is underwater is usually the domain of blue. And we said, how can
[1:19:42] different five colors of mana and how does that show up in all the environments, which was really fun. >> I bet. Yeah. That means that uh the just encompass a managerie of different things from colossal uh behemoths all
[1:19:56] creatures of of the ocean. >> Yeah, you've got the things you would >> Yeah, you've got the things you would expect. So merr folk, shark folk, squid folk, but we also got to explore like how do air breathers survive down here?
[1:20:08] How do the humans get around? >> Hang on. So um if you had to think outside the box, maybe a snorkel equipment confirmed for Noctis. >> Wait and see. Wait and see. >> Is so is [laughter] this this is the
[1:20:20] beginning of the new magic story then? >> Yes. So this is Noctis the sunken realm is the first set in 2027 as well as the beginning of our new story arc. And you will be able to celebrate the release of Noctus at the first of four Magicons in
[1:20:35] 2027. Zquille, where and when, please? >> The first Magic Con in 2027 will take place in North America and a place we haven't been in a while. The MA uh the Magic Con will be in the Motor City of
[1:20:51] Detroit. >> Oh, make some noise for Detroit. I get it. You know, it's the birthplace of Mottown, techno. Um, it's you nerds
[1:21:05] know, which is why we're giving you plenty of warning just to get the hips warmed up and ready to go for Detroit, you know. [laughter] first to tell us about as well, right? >> Oh, I have such a good one. This is the
[1:21:20] best. Okay. So, if you can't make it to Detroit or you can't dance apparently, uh May 14th through 16th, we are going to be making our Magic Con debut in to be making our Magic Con debut in Asia. We are going to Tokyo, Japan.
[1:21:36] Asia. We are going to Tokyo, Japan. [laughter] >> Looks like everyone in here is coming. I'll see you there. [laughter]
[1:21:49] And um time to move on to our second set of the year. Making a beloved return, of the year. Making a beloved return, >> but with a big twist.
[1:22:24] Kagawa. And then bam, the sky opens up and out falls of all things IIcicoria. You've got giant monsters, weird creatures, nightmares, elementals, and
[1:22:36] literally the land itself falling out of the sky. Kamia Titan Breach is a set that takes two fan favorite planes and crashes them together. On the one hand, we've got Kami Gawa. This is a longstanding magic plane with a lot of
[1:22:48] nostalgia. On the other hand, we've got IIcoria. Much newer, but very quickly beloved by fans, and each of these sets is coming together to clash in a classic mech versus monsters conflict. This is probably going to be one of the largest
[1:23:03] the Gathering. We're talking about things that might be four to five to six before. [music] Whether it's the mechs and and these kind of gigantic constructs or most evidently the monsters who are going to dwarf
[1:23:17] everything around them. The scale is like off the charts huge. So we had to retained. So a lot of our humans I actually had to put up on rooftops just eyesight of like these giant monsters that are rampaging through [music] the
[1:23:31] city. There's a large focus on the people of Kamiawa and how they are going to have to deal with this incursion. how they're going to be able to defend their people. >> The set story will have lasting
[1:23:43] know and love. >> What we're seeing now, for one of the representing an existential threat. >> It was very important to us when making mechs from one [music] place and monsters from the other and smashing
[1:23:56] them together. But that this was really a true exploration of what would it mean for these [music] worlds to combine and clash with each other? And what would that mean for the characters? what would [music] that mean for the magic of the
[1:24:08] two planes? And I think that we really were able to dive deep and fully flesh out this mashup of two settings into [music] one really cool result. I think have the monsters, we have the mechs, and what we get to do is take the
[1:24:24] epic conflict, but humanize it in the way that only magic can.
[1:24:46] [cheering and screaming] [applause] >> All right. One moment. >> When's it coming out, Jackie? >> All right. So, the battle for Kamagawa begins June 4th, 2027.
[1:25:01] >> Put it in the diary. June 4th, 2027. Um, Zakil, are we able to see a little bit Titan Brief? >> Yes, absolutely. So, this set takes >> Yes, absolutely. So, this set takes place on Kamiawa. Iicoria is invading
[1:25:15] for reasons [music] that will become clear. Uh, so Kamiawa is one of our most popular planes from Magic's history. So, you'll see a lot of familiar locations uh and amazing architecture and landscapes. [music] Um, although this
[1:25:27] landscapes. [music] Um, although this time it is through the lens of an allout planer war. >> Yeah. Uh the environments are cool, but see and the creature designs are so incredible.
[1:25:40] >> Yeah, you've got uh updated new Iicoria monsters and their bonders going Kamagawa mechs and their pilots. [music] It's going to be sick. >> The big question is why and what led out to led led to this allout war and what
[1:25:55] will come from it. Get ready to choose your side in June of next year. the 2027 timeline. You can see it on screen right now. Three sets and two Magicons in the first six months of
[1:26:09] 2027. Truly the year of the gathering. Would you not agree? >> Yes. Of course. >> It's going to be huge, Jack. >> Yeah, it's going to be huge. So, Kamagawa Titan Breach is going to be um
[1:26:21] our third set of the year after our first unannounced universes [music] beyond set. And like where should fans gather to celebrate the battle between [music] Where can we go for that to kill? Yeah, we have a bit more of a gap
[1:26:36] until our next Magicon, but we will have theming for Kamiawa Titan Breach at our theming for Kamiawa Titan Breach at our third Magic Con, Magicon Las Vegas in August 27th through 29th, about a month after our second Universes Beyond set of
[1:26:50] >> We're going back to Vegas, baby. [applause] about the Hall of Fame and I'd love to talk a little bit more for our
[1:27:03] more that we're able to announce? >> Yeah, we're going to chat a little bit >> Yeah, we're going to chat a little bit about the limited championship. So, the that players have already been qualifying for, but today we're sharing
[1:27:16] that it the actual event itself is going to take place June 18th through 20th in Minneapolis. >> Fantastic. >> So, we started with not just the sunken realm, moved on to Kamagawa Titan
[1:27:30] Breach, and now we have our third in universe set of 2027 to show you. And let me tell you, it is definitely going to be one of the most anticipated settings we have had in a long time. Let's take a look.
[1:28:12] magic history for a very very long time. It's a very highly magical place. This is a world that is powered by the light and the magic of five sons. So there is never night here. And this is contrasted with the spirit realm where it is full
[1:28:24] of mystery, is full of dangers where your ancestors and spirits go. And it is a world of eternal darkness. So there's lots of monstrous things and things that ultimately it's a way to stay connected to your history. Zafir sort of overwrote
[1:28:37] Meridans, but we didn't want it to overwrite what I come before it entirely. I want people to feel like this is untapped potential only this is untapped potential only scratching the surface not just of what
[1:28:49] afroofantasy can be but what magic can be. fantasy what we think about is a euroentric lens but afro fantasy [music]
[1:29:01] is specifically pulled from the cultures of the black diaspora through the lens that [music] we dress the way that we approach artistry. we get to use our inspiration from the foundation of what our culture is and build [music] a new
[1:29:15] world and realm based off of that. >> So I thought perfect blank slate we can >> So I thought perfect blank slate we can start fresh and really focus on making [music] sure this stays as afroentric and authentic as possible. So we had
[1:29:27] cultural consultants, we had afroofuturist authors, we had African history professors keeping us on track and making sure it [music] stayed true to our vision. The challenge was doing enough research and making sure that we
[1:29:42] were marrying African culture and weapons and [music] textile patterns and all of that stuff with that sprinkling of the Magic the [music] Gathering >> This is one of my favorite parts of the set. At the heart is like this very rich
[1:29:57] culture and spirituality. I want ancestral connection. I want to see a [music] spirit world. I want to see that rich tapestry of people represented. [music] Being able to show something that's so spiritually and culturally
[1:30:12] significant in a very fantastical way was a really important part of the set. was a really important part of the set. And the [music] visuals are stunning.
[1:30:25] >> [music] >> I hope that people who see this and haven't seen themselves represented in such a way, I just hope that they feel empowered, excited, energized, and inspired to also know that, you know,
[1:30:38] types are represented, their hair and the infinite things that our hair can do are represented. And I just want people to to feel the joy that we felt [music] to to feel the joy that we felt [music] while creating this set.
[1:30:54] >> [cheering] [applause] [applause] >> So,
[1:31:09] Xiao Fear since March of the Machine in 2023. Zil, when's the set coming though? executive producer on this set. I've had the chance to work on it for a couple years. Um, but I can't wait for it to release. It will be releasing on October
[1:31:24] 1st, 2027. [cheering] >> And Xiaou has been part of the Magic Universe for a long time, Jackie, right? >> Yeah. >> What are some of the new ideas that are
[1:31:37] >> Yeah. So, like you said, it's been around for a long time. It's going to be familiar to longtime players. Uh but this is actually the first time that we this is actually the first time that we are seeing it as a plane all of its own.
[1:31:49] Um so for those who've been following the story uh Tfairy phased [music] out Ja during the first Forexia invasion to protect it. So it's been phased back in now. Uh but it's not unchanged. [music] You know it doesn't paused in time like
[1:32:02] the people of Jir kept evolving and living during that time. Uh and when it phased back in it actually emerged in the spot where Meridan had previously been. Uh, so it's a return to world, but I think there's like narrative
[1:32:15] justification that allowed us to really update it and do something completely exciting and different with it as well. >> And how about the creatures to kill? >> Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. We spent so much time looking at the creatures and world
[1:32:27] building uh to try to create a new fresh and look new fresh feeling of this while still staying true [music] to classic magic. Yeah, I think for the creative team, we were so excited to have the opportunity to fully flesh out the
[1:32:42] opportunity to fully flesh out the culture of Jeopirating [music] culture, it's so [music] important to us that we treat it with respect and authenticity and you know, we brought on create uh uh creative consultation
[1:32:57] time we actually did something a little bit different in addition to that. We brought on collaborators who were experts in uh Afro fantasy and we had them really work closely with us to co-create the set. Um we learned a lot
[1:33:12] from them, but I think one of the things that I was most inspired by working with excited they were and how important it was to them that Magic was doing this so it's something that it's natural for us to do. Um, but Magic has a really big
[1:33:28] voice and a really big platform in the fantasy space. And for us to really lean in and put some focus on this and update it and do Afro fantasy right in a genre that really doesn't get enough attention in in media, it's it's huge. It's a
[1:33:43] really big deal. Yeah. Yeah. [applause] sets and this is probably the magic that I feel most proud to be a part of.
[1:33:59] [cheering] >> I love that. I mean, we've not even, you looks absolutely stunning. I can't wait for Xiaoir. So, let's add Xiaoir to our 2027 [music] timeline, the year of the gathering. Is
[1:34:13] there anything else we can add though, Zakil? Yeah, there will be a Universes Beyond set released after Xiaoir as well, bringing the year to six total major booster releases with three of them being these beautifully crafted
[1:34:26] them being these beautifully crafted magic multiverse worlds. Um, [applause] so if we take a look at the three sets that we revealed today, you know, honestly, I think that this is some of
[1:34:40] the best world building the creative team has ever done in a single year. It's pretty incredible. All of these are absolute bangers. Um, I think what's really special about getting the opportunity to work on Magic is that it
[1:34:53] has this huge creative [music] legacy that's so important that we get to honor, but at the same time, we get to build upon it and evolve it and like chart where it's going. And I think these three sets do exactly that. you
[1:35:05] know, Noctis, uh, Kamagawa, Titan, Breach, and Jafier each represent authentically magic, but at the same time pushing the multiverse into really do. >> Incredible. I mean, Amsterdam, what are
[1:35:19] you making of the future? [cheering] >> Come on, let's hear you. 2027, the year of the gathering. >> Incredible. [applause] I'm um we're we're almost I'm just thinking, didn't we? Um we said there
[1:35:33] >> we did forgotten one. >> I think we might have. Uh I can share >> Yeah. [cheering] >> Yeah. >> All right. So, our last Magic Con of 2027 uh is going to take place December
[1:35:48] 2027 uh is going to take place December 3rd through 5th right back here in 3rd through 5th right back here in Amsterdam. Yes.
[1:36:07] Wow, look at that timeline. Truly incredible for 2027 in Magic. A brand new story arc that starts with Noctus and goes beyond all the way throughout the year. Make some noise for your panel today,
[1:36:23] [cheering] Jackie Toil. Thank you so much. >> Whether you're excited about going with Noctis and the sunken realm, exploring the mighty mechs of Kamagawa Titan Breach, or returning to a new Xiaoir in
[1:36:36] 2027, it is going to be an awesome year for Magic. Thank you to both of you for hanging out. I have been Jack Saunders. Thank you so much. Maybe see you Thank you so much. Maybe see you tomorrow for the whole bit. Good night.
[1:37:32] >> Fall in love with me. [music] [music] All in love with
