In this keynote address, Dr. Mindy Pelz shares her personal journey through perimenopause, which led her to discover the power of fasting and the importance of understanding the female body's unique hormonal rhythms. She emphasizes that true health for women over 40 requires more than just diet and exercise; it demands a mindset shift, nervous system regulation, and honoring one's cyclical nature. The talk culminates in five principles for 'living like a girl' that empower women to take back control of their health and self-perception.
Dr. Mindy Pelz shares her experience with perimenopause, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, and irritability, which led her to explore heavy metal detox and eventually fasting.
She learned about autophagy, the process where cells eat themselves to repair, and realized the body is pre-designed to detox itself, making supplements less necessary.
Fasting is identified as the primary way to stimulate autophagy, leading her to implement various fasting protocols with her patients.
She noticed that women who fasted excessively experienced hair loss, stopped cycles, and gained weight, unlike men, prompting her to investigate further.
She created a whiteboard mapping hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle, leading to the insight that women are not the same every day and need different approaches at different times.
Applying this knowledge, she developed the 'Fasting Cycle' which aligns fasting with hormonal rhythms, resulting in improved outcomes for her patients.
She wrote the book 'Fast Like a Girl' after being inspired by the concept of 'throwing like a girl' and wanting to empower women to embrace their unique physiology.
She emphasizes that if we were trained to act a certain way, we can train ourselves to act differently, challenging cultural beliefs about women's bodies.
She discusses how women are trained to believe they need a flat stomach to be loved, and that it's nearly impossible for women to have a six-pack, urging a shift in focus.
She recounts her reaction to the Epstein Files, connecting the curation of Victoria's Secret catalogs to harmful body standards, and her decision to focus on self-love over just weight loss.
She cites Carol Gilligan's work showing that girls become less definitive about their wants as they enter puberty, due to cultural conditioning to please others.
She critiques the constant measuring against external standards and encourages women to define their own goals and desires from within.
She advises exercising for mood and brain chemistry rather than for a number on the scale, as this is more sustainable and fulfilling.
She highlights the pride and confidence women gain when they learn to heal themselves through fasting, contrasting it with relying on external solutions like GLP-1 drugs.
She explains that facing difficult challenges grows new neurons and builds a wiser brain, and that accepting your body's self-healing ability is one of the hardest things to do.
She declares her mission to show women how capable they are, despite a world that wants to keep them small, and to help them reclaim their power.
She criticizes the term 'evidence-based' because most research is based on men, with only 41% of studies isolating women, and only 15% of neuroscience studies analyzing sexes independently.
She challenges the blind trust in doctors, noting that medical students receive only 1.2 hours of nutrition education per year, and 58% receive no nutritional protocol at all.
She points out that 67% of health experts on social media disagree about HRT, causing confusion for women seeking guidance.
She warns that AI health agents provide incorrect information 22-43% of the time, citing an interview with Suze Orman where her chatbot was wrong 50% of the time.
She introduces five principles: mindset matters, regulate your nervous system, honor your rhythms, everything is health, and understand the hormonal hierarchy.
She emphasizes that you know yourself best and should test all information on yourself, thinking through the lens of a female body.
She stresses that regulating the nervous system is the most important thing before any other health intervention, and that doing less is often better when stressed.
She explains that women are rhythmic beings and need to align their health practices with their menstrual and lifetime hormonal rhythms.
She argues that all aspects of life, including traffic, contribute to health, and that we must view them holistically.
She outlines the hierarchy: oxytocin at the top, then cortisol, insulin, and sex hormones at the bottom, explaining that addressing stress and connection is key to balancing hormones.
Dr. Mindy Pelz concludes that true health for women over 40 requires a holistic approach that includes mindset, nervous system regulation, honoring rhythms, and understanding the hormonal hierarchy. By taking back control of their health and self-perception, women can achieve lasting results and fall in love with their bodies.

52:06[00:06] How many people have seen that's a commercial? commercial? It was a commercial done 11 years ago for a Super Bowl. Has anybody seen that? >> It's crazy. Anyways, I
[00:21] Thank you, Paige. Where's Paige? You're too kind. So, thank you for those kind too kind. So, thank you for those kind remarks. So about 10 years ago, I was going through perry menopause. Anybody been through pmenopause?
[00:35] been through pmenopause? It's really anybody in pmenopause. that Janelle from it was in pmenopause. And I was having this experience with
[00:48] myself that I had never had before where I was experiencing depression, anxiety, insomnia, irritability. Anybody have those feelings? And so I was trying to understand what was going on with me. And I discovered a whole world of detox.
[01:04] And I discovered a whole world of detox. And I started to see that there was a situation that happened in a woman's body when she went through the a massive hormonal change where heavy metals specifically came out of her system,
[01:18] went into the bloodstream and up into the brain and started to change the way that she was thinking. And so I got really intrigued by this and I ended up studying everything I could about heavy metal detox and I totally changed my
[01:33] practice and I started heavy metal detoxing every woman that came to me that was over 40 and we were getting incredible results. But if anybody's ever done a heavy metal detox, it's it's not an easy process. It's a lot of ups
[01:48] and downs, but the end result is really quite amazing. And so I was excited people supplements so they could start to detox. And then one day I learned
[02:00] about this word called autophagy. Anybody know the word autophagy? I hope so. Otherwise, I haven't done my job. And I was like, autophagy? What is this? And I went to go look look it up. And at that time, a man named Dr.
[02:16] And at that time, a man named Dr. Yoshinuri Osumi had just won the Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology for this term called autophagy, which basically means the cells will eat themselves when there's no nutrients and
[02:29] no glucose coming in. The cells will actually repair themselves. And I was so intrigued by this. I was like, "Oh my god, wait, wait. The body comes pre-esigned to detox itself. Why am I giving all these supplements to my
[02:45] patients if the body does this on its own? And so I became obsessed with all the ways that we could stimulate autophagy. And the number one way, by the way, there's a lot of ways, but the number one way is fasting. And so I
[03:00] started to understand fasting. I literally spent 20 plus hours a week on PubMed, which is the major site for all research, going down rabbit holes of trying to understand what fasting could do. And I walked out of that experience
[03:15] of doing that for several months. And I realized, oh my god, I don't need to be giving my patients supplements. I just need to get them into a state where the body will heal itself. And so we started fasting as an office together. And we
[03:31] did all kinds of fasts. 17 hour hour fast, three-day water fast, all kinds of things. I I grabbed I always grabbed the mamas first. I had a I'll never forget the first time I wanted to do a three-day water fast. And so I went to
[03:43] was like, "Hey, I'm doing a three-day water fast. You want to do it with me?" And they're like, "Sure, let's go." And so, in fact, you can go on to onto Facebook and you can still see a video of me and these moms doing our first
[03:58] three-day water fast. And um it was an incredible experience. I had felt like I like, "This is oh my god, we're going to heal everybody through fasting." And then I started fasting more and more and more people in my practice. And I
[04:13] noticed something very different between the men and the women. The women, the more they fasted, the more their hair fell out. The more they fasted, the more their cycles stopped. The more they fasted, the more they gained weight if
[04:27] they kept doing it over and over and over again. And at this time, Jason Fun had come out with his book called The Obesity Code. And if you remember that book, it was really lifechanging because we literally thought weight loss was
[04:42] calorie in, calorie out. I just want to make sure we're clear. Weight loss is not calorie in, calorie out. Any Anybody still having trouble with that? If you
[04:54] are, let's like come to me and let's break that down because it is one of the worst diet advices that was ever given to women because we restrict and then we push and it tanks our body even more. So, but Jason fun basically came out and
[05:10] said it's hormonal. Weight gain and weight loss is a hormonal issue. So, I started to look at weight loss through a new lens because I had a lot of patients that were um interested in losing weight, just becoming better versions of
[05:25] themselves. I was taking women to Costco and showing them how to like read the little green signs that so you knew that it was organic. Costco would actually um open up their stores for me an hour before they opened it up to the public.
[05:39] And I would grab all the I call them the mama bears. I grab all the mama bears in ones are the with the green signs." You guys know this, right, about Costco. The green signs are organic. I would show them how to read labels. And then we
[05:52] would all fast together. And what I learned during that time was that if a woman fasts too much, something something happened to her. Something in
[06:04] something happened to her. Something in her system didn't appreciate that. So, I took a big whiteboard in my office and I put it up on the wall, as big of a whiteboard as I could find, and I basically basically drew out the
[06:17] menstrual cycle. And I put it in a circle, and I was like, "Okay, what is going on hormonally from day one to day 10?" And I wrote all the hormonal changes that were happening. And then I did the same thing for the other parts
[06:31] of the menstrual cycle. And then all of a sudden I started to see a pattern a sudden I started to see a pattern emerge. And the pattern was that at different times of the month we are controlled by different hormones. And
[06:46] controlled by different hormones. And the first like aha that I had was oh my god we're not the same. Every single day of the month we're not the same. We like think different, makes us act different. We're not the same. Why didn't anybody
[07:01] tell me this? Like no wonder one day of the month I feel great and the next day I want to kill somebody. I'm like this is normal. So then I decided on this whiteboard is I broke down each hormone. So I broke down each hormone and I was
[07:17] like okay what does estrogen like? What's the lifestyle that estrogen likes? What's the lifestyle testo testosterone likes? What's the lifestyle that progesterone likes? And I tried to map out a new lifestyle for women.
[07:34] map out a new lifestyle for women. And you all know that where that led to. And I ended up applying it to every woman in my office who was doing these woman in my office who was doing these long fasts. And I applied it to several
[07:47] of my staff that were struggling with with infertility. Um, I applied it to every single female body I could find to see how it would work. And I came up with what you now know is the fasting cycle. And women's hair stopped falling
[08:04] out. Women stopped gaining weight. They started losing weight again. Periods came back. Energy came back. I mean, I can't tell you how many babies are out there in the world because of the fasting cycle. And and I started to
[08:16] fasting cycle. And and I started to watch women repair their hormonal system by just fasting at certain times and not fasting at other times. And I got so excited about this that I went to YouTube and my YouTube was starting to
[08:31] take off at that point. And I went to YouTube and I just taught it from a whiteboard back in that those days. I just showed up with my hair all crazy this." this and I started teaching it from YouTube and I asked my YouTube
[08:46] community tell me if you start getting a result from fasting. Now what you have result from fasting. Now what you have to understand is at that point all the people who were OMADs one meal a day Jason fun devotees came all over to my
[09:02] YouTube and they all started to apply the fasting cycle and they all started to see that they got results again and my whole channel just exploded and from
[09:14] there I was like oh my god what else do women need to do? I just needed to figure out this incredible tool and map it to their hor hormones. What else did they need to do? And at that time, I was so excited about it. I was like, I
[09:28] should write a book about this. Anybody written a book in here? [laughter] Yeah. Yeah. It was a very naive moment, but I So, I I wrote a book about it. And
[09:40] originally it was going to be called The Fasting Fix for Women. And one day I was running and I was thinking about run like a girl. Anybody see the run like a girl races that they for for little girls? And I was like just be like fast
[09:56] like a girl. And so I got fully immersed in this principle of like a girl. Well at that time I just want to say the me at that time I just want to say the me too movement was really popular and
[10:08] using the word girl for a woman was not considered socially acceptable. And so I went to my cous my my husband's cousin who is a feminist philosopher and I said if I wrote a book called Fast Like a Girl, would you be insulted if I called
[10:23] you a girl? And she said absolutely not because of one person. We'll go straight because of one person. We'll go straight here. This woman, her name is Iris here. This woman, her name is Iris Marian Young and she wrote back in 1980
[10:39] a essay, a very famous essay. She actually published it that was called actually published it that was called throwing like a girl. And she said, and I'll quote some of her words, that women are not weaker. The way we move, the way
[10:55] are not weaker. The way we move, the way we act was taught into us. That we actually move our body in a very specific way because of what the culture has taught into us. And she, these are her words, nobody is born throwing like
[11:09] a girl. We were trained into it. So watch a little watch how a little girl throws and she doesn't she does when before she gets the cultural message that you don't show up big. She actually will throw. I can throw like a girl a I
[11:27] was a little baseball player. I know how to throw in a way. And so somewhere along the line when we are doing this it's because we don't want to take up a lot of space. It's because we are self-conscious of
[11:42] how people are perceiving us. And so when a girl goes to throw, she's actually doing it in response to the people around her. And I started to
[11:54] break this down and realize that there are so many things that women do that we we look at how the world looks at us and then we turn around and we behave
[12:06] accordingly. And the whole like a girl series was birthed from Iris Marian Young's concept of throw like a girl. You can go look up her essay. It's quite it's it's long and beautiful and it's basically because we don't want to take
[12:21] up a lot of space because we're always in our head about our bodies, we throw and act and behave differently. Then recently, oh I this is a and this is a key concept I just want to point out is that
[12:36] if we were trained to throw a certain way, if we were trained to act a certain way, then we can actually train ourselves to do it differently. And that is going to be a theme you're going to see this whole weekend because what I
[12:50] really wanted to do with this live like a girl retreat is help you all see that a girl retreat is help you all see that what's happening up here was for most of us was not our choice. What's going on in here, what you're
[13:04] What's going on in here, what you're hearing in here are not your beliefs. They are beliefs from a culture that told you to act a certain way, to be a certain way, to show up in a certain way, and then you will be loved. So, one
[13:18] of the things you're going to hear throughout the whole weekend is how important it is that we catch the thoughts up here. I have answered so thoughts up here. I have answered so many questions about weight loss online
[13:34] and I will tell you that the most common question that I get is what about my belly fat? And I have sat with that question and answered it from as many different places that I possibly can. And I'm like
[13:49] places that I possibly can. And I'm like why are we concerned about belly fat? I understand it's visceral fat. It's not the healthiest of fat, but why is it the belly? Why is it that women hate the belly? And I have come to the conclusion
[14:04] that it's because we have been trained to have a flat that we will be loved if we have a flat ab. Do you know that it's literally near impossible for a woman to have a six-pack? Try it. I've seen a lot of women who are
[14:19] incredibly fit. They get a twoack. They don't get a six-pack. And so I really wanted to marinate in this idea that I can tell you how many
[14:33] macros you need. I can tell you how long you need to fast. I can give you the keys to the kingdom of visceral fat, which I will do tomorrow morning. I will give you all of those keys. But it won't land on you until you
[14:48] understand that your beliefs about yourself were curated by other people. And this weekend is our opportunity to take those beliefs back and to challenge
[15:01] them. A lot of you have heard me say this that I went a little crazy in February when the Epstein Files came out. I decided with my friend Katie because Peter Aia, one of the bros in the
[15:15] wellness world and was was in the Epstein files and I said to myself, before I criticize him, I need to understand if this is accurate or not. So for two weeks, my friend Katie and I every single day would bring each other
[15:29] like, is this true or that true or what's going on here? Trying to figure what's going on here? Trying to figure out. And it was on the 14th day that I out. And it was on the 14th day that I lost my goddamn mind because when I
[15:41] found out that the founder of Victoria Secret was one of the main people involved in this pedophile rapist murdering horrible thing. And he was the
[15:54] one that was curating the who saw the Victoria Secret catalog who waited for the Victoria Secret secret catalog to come to our front door. and we would open it up and we would look at it and I remember as a little girl thinking, God,
[16:08] one day I hope I can look like that, but today I don't look like that. And that was curated by a man who did not have our best interest. And that was the moment in February that I decided I was no longer just to give you guys pieces.
[16:24] I can't give you pieces anymore because if I teach you how to lose weight, I can't tell you you're going to love yourself. You're going to have to figure that out. You're going to have to find a way to love yourself. This is why I have
[16:36] Victoria and Nancy here to start to break through some of those barriers can do for your health and for your female body is to love yourself without the result. What I want to do and and what I hope we all do is become warriors
[16:53] after this weekend for teaching other women how to love themselves. And I know questions about belly fat and I tell you all how to reduce belly fat, which I'll do tomorrow morning, I
[17:08] I can't tell you that if you lose your belly fat that you're going to love yourself. You're going to have to figure out how to do that in co in combination with the tools that we're learning. Last year when I wrote Age Like a Girl, I
[17:23] found this woman's work. Her name is Carol Gilligan Carol Gilligan and she also ironically in the 1980s and she also ironically in the 1980s came up with a concept um that if she
[17:35] looked at how girls progressed through puberty before they go into puberty they are definitive about what they want. If you ask an a nine-year-old girl, "What do you want to eat?" She'll tell you exactly what she wants to eat. And by
[17:50] exactly what she wants to eat. And by the time she gets to 13, she'll say, "I don't know. What are you gonna eat?" Watch yourself. Watch your daughters. Watch your granddaughters. How many of us go, "Oh, I know. I'm sorry. I'm
[18:03] sorry. What were you going to do?" "Oh, I'm sorry." This has been programmed into us. And one of the things that Carol brought to the menu of like a girl Carol brought to the menu of like a girl for me was the fact that women have been
[18:18] told that somehow we're were falling short, that somehow we're less than. Now, I know we live in a different world right now than we did back in the 1980s when these women were doing their work. They both ironically were doing these
[18:31] studies in the 1980s, which I think is really fascinating because the 1980s for many of us was just a [snorts] crazy misogynistic time. Like just watch a ask them what they think. They'll be like, "What the Why are they
[18:46] it. I watch Fast Times at Ridgemont High did they just call her?" I'm like, "Yeah, we had to put up with that shit." "Yeah, we had to put up with that shit." So, but but I tell you this to say that
[18:59] So, but but I tell you this to say that as we start this weekend, what I want you to understand is that the opportunity that sits here is for you to take your thoughts back, for you to be able to finally express what you want to
[19:15] able to finally express what you want to say. And it only is going to start if we understand where our mindset is at. If we understand why like like when I would weight, the first question I would ask them is why do you want to lose weight?
[19:31] high school weight, the the weight I was in high school. Do you know how many high school? What the hell happened to us in high school that has us wanting to Like, I don't get that. Everybody and then they would come in and be like, I'm
[19:45] are you going to put your cheerleading outfit on? Like, I don't I don't outfit on? Like, I don't I don't understand what that is. But there is what I call an outside in approach. We are constantly measuring
[19:59] ourselves against whatever is going on outside of us, the people, the environment, the the the communities we were in. And what these two women really taught us and especially in Carol Gilligan's work is that there is a
[20:14] Gilligan's work is that there is a pressure on us to be a certain way. And I wanted to start this retreat with that thought because I want you to love
[20:26] you for you. I want you to look in the mirror and say, "I love that body." Even if it's not perfect. I want you to start thinking your own thoughts. You And part of what we're going to do over this weekend is start to really catch where
[20:42] we have a train of thought that has taken us to a place of self-hatred. Because I will tell you after 10 years of giving advice on YouTube, I have come
[20:55] to the conclusion that the number one success to health is making it your own. Is deciding what your goal is. Not a goal of I want to lose weight so my husband loves me better. I want to, you know, I want to have better mental
[21:10] clarity so I can hang out with my kids. I mean, those are good goals, but I want you to turn it within and make the decision of what you want to feel like, what you want to be like, what size clothes you want. Like, maybe you don't
[21:24] clothes you want. Like, maybe you don't want to be a size two. I don't I don't I don't want to kill myself to be a number on the scale. I don't even have a scale anymore. I got rid of it because I felt like I got rid of all my wearables. I
[21:37] get rid of all of it because I wanted to have a relationship with myself. So, this weekend is going to be about reclaiming your voice. And for some of you, you may not even know that your voice was taken away from you. But as we
[21:53] go through the tools like tomorrow when I go through food and fasting and I want to show you. What I want you to ask yourself is, do I want to do that? Like tomorrow I'm going to show you how
[22:07] Like tomorrow I'm going to show you how to exercise in a way that you exercise for chemistry. You exercise for mood. You exercise for your brain to be in a certain pattern. You don't exercise for a number on the scale. You will never
[22:22] get yourself to the gym over and over and over again if you are exercising for a number on the scale. But if you turn that around and you exercise because you want to feel amazing in your body, that
[22:36] changes the whole game. But you haven't been trained to think like this. I know our wise elders in the group are like, "Yeah, I'm way over just don't care anymore." But I I've
[22:50] told this story. My 86-year-old mom is still contemplating going on GLPs. I'm like, you're 86, mom. Like, I don't understand. Like, do you not love your body now? If you don't, you're gonna like it. It It makes me sad
[23:05] you're gonna like it. It It makes me sad because I really feel like that is the goal. The goal of this weekend, the goal of every health habit, the goal of everything you do for yourself is you want to fall back in love with this,
[23:19] what this is capable of doing. And so I want to give you a clear pathway to be want to give you a clear pathway to be able to see that because if you don't fall in love with you, you will have what I call shiny object syndrome where
[23:33] you will keep grabbing on to supplements. You'll keep grabbing on to gurus. You'll keep running like a dog chasing its tail looking for the next chasing its tail looking for the next best thing. You are the next best thing.
[23:46] And once you fall in love with the journey, once you fall in love with what you're capable of, you will start to see that the results you've been trying to get are effortless. One of the things I loved about fasting
[24:03] was women would walk in the front door of my office and they will, you know, a woman who normally walked like this, you know, would I would watch her walk in and she would walk like this and she were her shoulders would be back and
[24:16] she'd be and she'd have a smile on her face and she literally looked like somebody had taken a coat of fat off of her. Once we taught her, you have a metabolic switch. Stop counting calories. Stop manipulating food. Let's
[24:31] just put that all in a compressed eating window and let's start fasting. All this all this weight just dropped off. Women, I I'm so shocked right now by the GLPs get that with fasting. I don't understand why we're so excited about
[24:47] fasting. You can train yourself to do it. But most important is when you go through the procedure and the process to learn how to heal yourself, you will
[24:59] stand with pride. You will stand with confidence. You will stand in a new set of shoes. And every single time you try to bypass that, you cheat yourself.
[25:11] One of the things I told you all the other day on the on our one of our calls was there is a part in the brain, it's called the anterior singulate that gets that gets built in the prefrontal cortex when we are faced to be resilient.
[25:27] When we have to butt up against something that is difficult and we sit something that is difficult and we sit with that and we get through it, you actually grow yourself a more balanced, happier, wise brain. That I put this in
[25:43] the group. We have measured wisdom. We know wisdom. We know what a wise brain looks like. And there's two ways to get wisdom. I'm not joking. One way is you can sit and meditate for hours and hours and hours.
[25:58] I don't have time. Anybody have time to sit and meditate for hours and hours? The other one is you can face hard [snorts] things and you can overcome those hard things because what happens up here is that you hit a a neuronal
[26:13] this. I can't do this. I don't know how I'm going to do it. I'm not I don't know tried to do this, don't you remember you failed. And then don't you remember your at this? And remember when you tried to do this in high school? Like the whole
[26:27] story starts. And when you start to ask different questions to your brain and you start looking at things through a different looking at things through a different lens, all of a sudden a new baby neuron
[26:41] appears and you will get a new thought. Maybe I can do this. Maybe there is a way. Maybe there's just one step I can take. And that neuron is like a seed that comes up from the soil and it starts to grow. And
[26:58] then the more you take that seed and the more you ask yourself, okay, what else can I do? How else can I face this? What what other tools are accessible to me? what other tools are accessible to me? You literally grow a whole new set of
[27:11] neurons. It is called neuroplasticity and is the major thing that they tell women you got to be careful of as you age is your neuroplasticity is going to to follow. But you know how you get neuroplasticity back? One of the major
[27:26] ways you get neuroplasticity back is by willing to face hard things. And do you know one of the hardest things to do is to accept that your body loves you and that your body is self-healing. And when it's not acting or behaving or moving
[27:41] like you like you want it to, that you are the one that is responsible and in control of that change. And that is what I see over and over and over again as people step into a fasting lifestyle. The pride that comes I saw with a lot of
[27:57] you today when you came up to me and just told me about your wins. What I see is a whole new new brain that developed from just watching my YouTube videos. applying it, getting a result. I wasn't there doing it. This is why I always say
[28:12] you changed your life. I wasn't there doing it. You did it. And not only did you do it and you got a good result, but you did it and you grew a new brain. And now once your brain knows it can do that, what else can your brain do?
[28:26] That is what it means to start to fall in love with your body like a girl. It's to take back that little girl. I love that commercial for so many reasons. But that commercial for so many reasons. But did you see the bravado in those 10 year
[28:41] olds? She like, "Oh, you want me to run? Okay, I'll run." She had the world hadn't hadn't changed her yet. The world hadn't told her that she can't do it. And if there's one thing that the female body knows how to do is it knows how to
[28:55] heal. But we don't trust it. We second guessess it. We manipulate it. we outsource it. And so we outsource it. And so I decided that I needed to make this my
[29:10] mission this year. And we have been changing so many things within my business to bring leaning into this like a girl to lift each woman up to start to a girl to lift each woman up to start to show women how ridiculously capable they
[29:23] are in a world that wants to keep you small. All of Age Like a Girl was all about showing women that your brain was built for leadership. But they don't want to let you know that because if you knew that, what would happen if we had a
[29:39] billion women going through menopause that were like, "Okay, I'm a leader now. I'm going to do this." So they keep they tell you the wrinkles don't matter and the or that they matter and the gray hair makes you not useful.
[29:52] They have been doing this our whole life. Now, I want to talk about a few things that we are doing right now in the world of health. The first is a term that's getting thrown around a lot called
[30:05] Anybody hearing this? It's evidence-based. Anybody follow me on Stub Substack? I put a post one day because I got so evidence-based. Evidence-based." I'm like, "What is evidence-based? What is
[30:20] evidence-based?" Because what we know is that the majority of science has been built off of studying men. In fact, when I looked at some of the studies, men are
[30:33] studied five times more than women. So when we walk around and say evidence-based, we're saying evidence-based for men or from mice. We're not saying for women. And we're building our whole health plan
[30:47] around that. Women are over half of the population. Yet when you look at studies, we find that only 41% of the studies are
[30:59] are dedicated to women where they've actually isolated us out of the study. We also, this one was really interesting because one of the things around
[31:11] you know, they used to say that a woman's brain was actually smaller that than a man's, therefore we weren't as smart. Anybody hear that? Okay. So, I
[31:23] just want to say that we when estrogen comes in, we have a corpus colossum that is bigger and thicker than a man's. And when estrogen comes in, she activates this highway between the right and the left brain. And so every time we make a
[31:38] decision when estrogen was around or as a friend of mine likes to say when we were drugged on estrogen is that we would bring the right hemisphere and the left hemisphere to every single decision that we would ever make. And the right
[31:50] hemisphere cares about your feelings. It cares about relationships. It's creative. And the left hemisphere is about logic and making sure that things make sense. And a woman brings both hemispheres to the party. Which is why
[32:04] because we're so focused on relationships and we lose track of ourselves. But in check this out, neuroscience medicine has been treating us as smaller men. In one neuroscience review, only a fraction of brain
[32:19] studies, I'm just going to put it that way, looked at both sexes independently. There were only 15% of neuroscience studies that people are showing up on podcasts that are doing reals about this study and that study
[32:34] reals about this study and that study and this only 15% actually pulled men can analyze it from a different perspective. So evidence-based is it gets us in the ballpark but it doesn't actually get us to a place where we
[32:50] understand ourselves. Second thing, the old model of health care was whatever my doctor said I will do. Anybody follow that model? My walked Well, I don't know. The doctor said I should do that.
[33:06] said I should do that. Okay. We also have a lot of doctors right now that are walking around like lifestyle experts. And I or or my the lifestyle experts. And I or or my the one that just killed me the most was how
[33:21] say, "Well, I just I need your help because my doctor said my BMI is too high and I need to lose weight." And I would say, "Do you know what a BMI is?" said it was too high." Did he offer you tell you anything on
[33:37] how to lose weight? No. He just said my BMI. showed me a chart and he showed me that my BMI was too high and I needed to lose weight. These five women that I studied before I put Fast Like a Girl out were all told that they couldn't get
[33:51] pregnant because their BMI was too high. And once we got their metabolic system in place, they were able to conceive and have a baby. So check this out. When we look at medical school and we look at what kind of education they get, a
[34:06] medical doctor gets 1.2 2 hours of formal nutrition ed education per year. You guys are going to get more nutrition education this weekend than most doctors
[34:18] will get in medical school. And 58% of student of out of a thousand students student of out of a thousand students received no nutritional protocol at all. So we don't have lifestyle experts. I'm not here to bash the medical community.
[34:32] experts? We're the people that are teaching us how to tend to this beautiful feminine body that we've been given. We also I found this statistic a big buzz in social media right now is HRT and that every woman needs to get on
[34:50] HRT. But do you know when you actually look at social media that 67% of social media sites, which is the number one place that we go now as both
[35:04] men and women, social media is the number one place people get health advice from. 67% of the women giving health or the the experts giving health advice on HRT
[35:20] disagree with each other. Has anybody found themselves looking that person's saying that now. Okay, maybe I should follow that." And then something else and you're just going around and around in a circle.
[35:41] The other thing that is now becoming quite popular is AI. Anybody built quite popular is AI. Anybody built themselves an AI health agent? Yeah, I have. I have. Let's Let's Yeah, let's call ourselves out. I have a clawed
[35:53] health agent and I put all my genes test and all my blood tests in there and we're having a conversation. And here is what we know is that 22 to 43% of the
[36:05] information that AI is giving us is wrong on our health. One of the in most interesting interviews I did this year was with interviews I did this year was with Susie Orman, the financial um wiz, and
[36:18] she said she put all of her books, she put her top podcast, her top interviews put her top podcast, her top interviews into a chatbot, and for several months she, the real Susie, talked to the expert chatbot and she said 50% of the
[36:34] time it was wrong. We also know that one of the things that's happening is that as people are using AI more and more and more is that using AI more and more and more is that AI doesn't tell you when it's it is
[36:49] maybe on the edge. It doesn't know. No. Right. It's like, "Oh, this is a great question. You should probably do X, Y, and Z." Right? It never ever tells you. I'm not really sure, but this is what you think what I think you should do. It
[37:03] you think what I think you should do. It comes in with certainty. So, When I look at where we are, we are at a place where our brains have been hijacked to believe that if I'm beautiful and I'm thin, I will be worthy and I will be loved. I go
[37:20] into my doctor's office and my doctor is going to ridicule me and tell me that whatever I'm doing is wrong, even though they don't have lifestyle education. So, then I go to social media and everybody's fighting and I don't know
[37:33] what they're talking about and why are they disagreeing. So I'm gonna go to my AI chatbot. But guess what? It's wrong. Anybody feel like they're going through this or am I the only one that's having this experience?
[37:45] And so I feel at this particular moment in history that we need a new set of rules. We need to take back our brains. We need to take back the way we approach health because the the culture, the society that we are
[38:02] swimming in doesn't have our best interest. Nobody's looking out for us. interest. Nobody's looking out for us. So, I came up with five ways to live life like a girl. And these are what I consider the triedand-true ways in which
[38:18] we can approach our chat bots, we can approach our doctors, we can approach social media. Because if I can give you a new pair of glasses to think about your health and to take information in, then you can move into any situation you
[38:35] are in. Whether it's a doctor ridiculing you or two social media experts disagreeing or a chatbot telling you you you're great and that you're going to have all the right answers, you will have, if you follow these five, you will
[38:48] have a formula to do what I call critical thinking. Nobody critically thinks about health anymore. Everybody's just give me the thing, the next thing Give me the thing that's going to propel me forward. So here is the five. So the
[39:03] first one, let me actually go through. I'm going to come over here and just go one by one. The first one is mindset matters. This is why I'm starting this event off with how you think. Tomorrow, I'm going
[39:18] to simplify nutrition for you. Anybody confused about macros and carbs and protein and fiber? I'm going to simplify it. I'm going to make it so easy. You're going to doubt yourself when you put a plate together again.
[39:31] But if you don't understand where these thoughts are coming from, if you don't understand why there parts of your body you hate, if you don't understand why the information that's coming at you on social media makes you feel like
[39:47] then everything I teach you is going to fall to the wayside. So, we are going to do a ton on mindset. And here's what I want you to know when it comes to a live want you to know when it comes to a live like a girl mindset. First is you know
[40:00] you best. Do not let anybody a doctor me a social Do not let anybody a doctor me a social inter influencer a a husband a friend you know you best. So you test everything on you when you're going
[40:16] whether you're reading the paper or you're watching a news show. when you're going through it, I want you to start to go, "Huh, I wonder if that would work go, "Huh, I wonder if that would work for me." As opposed to what many women
[40:30] do, which is when they see the information coming at them, they go, "Oh, God, I gotta do that now. I got to how to count." Like, all day long, I got to count protein. Like, I my favorite
[40:44] can't go to work today because I'm counting protein." Like, it's counting protein." Like, it's ridiculous. So test everything on you when you see information in over this whole weekend as each one of us comes up
[40:58] here. Yes, we're experts in our field. Yes, we have a lot of experience working with patients and seeing if this is works, but we don't have the experience that you have in you. So ask yourself, is this right for me? Is this what I
[41:13] want to do? Start having dialogue with yourself. The other part of mindset is you have to think about everything through the lens think about everything through the lens of a female body. The female body I am
[41:26] absolutely convinced is more sensitive than the male body because it was designed to be that way because we were designed to create life. And so our nervous system is a lot more sensitive. And when we went through menopause, we
[41:40] were designed to actually save the tribe while the rest of the men and the strong adolescents were off trying to make a big animal kill. We had the gr it was
[41:52] the grandmothers that stayed back by the clan and made sure that the pregnant women and the children were safe. Either way you skin this, we have a very sensitive nervous system. And so we have to start to learn how to take care of
[42:08] ourselves from a different lens. And when you go to make a health plan, which I'm going to teach you how to do over this weekend, how do you make a health plan that's unique to you, you're going to figure out very clearly
[42:22] what you want and what your health plan might be. And your health plan may be different than your health plan. Doesn't mean all the pieces are wrong. It just means for you it needs to look different. And that's okay.
[42:37] Second concept of living like a girl, and this is one I learned um the hard way, the number one thing before you eat, supplement, before you take a medication, the most important thing you
[42:54] can do to your female body is regulate your nervous system. Right. Right, Kelly? We've been talking, we you and I have been talking for years now. We need to talk about the nervous
[43:07] system. One of the best things I did last year is isolate myself because my nervous system shut on me from too much trauma coming at me. And so I isolated myself and put myself in an Airbnb. No joke. Finishing up Age Like a Girl by
[43:23] myself because my nervous system was so whacked out. I was so traumatized from the fire, from losing a friend, from from what comes with being a public figure and and what came at me with that. My nervous system couldn't take it
[43:38] anymore. No food, no supplement, no exercise, no yoga class, no peptide, nothing was going to help me until I helped myself. So, I'm going to show you a way that you can actually start to look at your nervous system.
[43:53] Understanding how to regulate your nervous system is probably the most important thing that any female body can do. And when I look at the manipulation of information that we should do this and we should do that and we should do
[44:08] this and I watch women double down on all the different things they're supposed to be doing, all I see is a woman heading into a mental breakdown. Anybody feel that way? So, I'm working on coming up with a formula that you can
[44:24] on coming up with a formula that you can use so that you know where you are and you know what activities are going to put you into a either positive nervous state system state or a negative nervous system state. So just like we have a
[44:39] metabolic switch where we go from from sugar burner to fat burner, we have our nervous system should go into rest and digest and then it should go into fight or flight. And you should spend about 80 70
[44:55] flight. And you should spend about 80 70 80% of your time in rest and digest. event, you should go into fight or flight. You run from the tiger. You handle the stressful event and then you go back to the rest and digest. How many
[45:11] people feel like they can do that? Awesome. I had to learn that last year. I I did not write. I did not know I was stuck in fight or flight. And what happens is if I'm in a state where work is crazy, my kids are having problems,
[45:26] my marriage is falling apart, and all of a sudden I am like gaining weight, the a sudden I am like gaining weight, the worst thing you can do is more. Right? This is probably the hardest thing that
[45:41] This is probably the hardest thing that women will ever learn in our life. When the wheels are coming off the bus, the worst thing you could do is more. you want to actually do less. So, some of you as I go through my talk tomorrow,
[45:56] you're gonna be like, I need to start subtracting things. I need to get I got on an interview, why don't you have any macros in age like a girl? And I was like, because if I could pull the macros out of fast like a girl and I could pull
[46:10] Because women went from counting calories to counting macronutrients. And now everybody's like obsessed. Well, I had 51 net carbs. Is am I going to gain weight? When we don't get a result in ourselves,
[46:26] we don't soften. We lean in and we do more. So, when I look at the number two like a girl, we are going to learn how
[46:38] to regulate our nervous systems this weekend. And we're going to learn how to weekend. And we're going to learn how to take a toolbox and put it in to whatever nervous system state we are in. And as I go through all that in the morning, I
[46:52] really want you to make sure that you've taken this test and you know what nervous state you're in. Because if I tell you that if you do a three-day water fast and it's going to reboot your whole immune system and cure your
[47:05] autoimmune challenges and you're in a frozen nervous system, that is not your tool. This is where it gets very very individualized. And this is probably one of the hardest concepts I have ever
[47:18] taught to a group of people before, but I had to go through it myself first. I had to learn it for myself first. I did a video that just came out on YouTube today that everybody seems to love because we like to see people like mess
[47:33] because we like to see people like mess up. And so I put a video out today of I stopped fasting for a year. Yeah, go watch it. Go look at the comments. And I find it fascinating that it is one of the top performing videos
[47:48] that we have done in a really long time. And what that tells me, I looked at the comments and a lot of people were like, "Thank you. I had a sense I was fasting too much. Thank you for your honesty of what you did." And I the reason I did it
[48:02] it was and I say it in the video. It wasn't that I stopped fasting because I don't believe in fasting. I stopped fasting because I was in a freeze nervous system and throwing more fasting at it wasn't going to be the answer. I
[48:15] stopped going to the gym. I stopped lifting weights. I stopped doing carb uh going low carb. I went into an intuitive style of managing my health because my nervous system was so frazzled. And I have a feeling that many of you are in
[48:31] this place as we go through this this weekend. I want you to think from the lens, oh that's an interesting tool, but I'm totally whacked out right now. That's not my tool. It's okay to say that to yourself. Or some of you can be
[48:45] I'm ready to double down on all my health habits." But this is where the N of one, this is where the personalization needs to come through the lens of where are you with your nervous system. That is the most
[48:59] important question you can ask yourself. Okay. Third rule is we already know I've taught you all this. We honor our rhythms. That we honor how that we have a menstrual rhythm. We have a lifetime hormonal rhythm. Women are rhythmic. So,
[49:16] when we do the same thing over and over and over and over and over again, I work out the same, I eat the same, I do the same fasting length, I I wear the same out with the same people, that is probably the worst thing you could do.
[49:32] But we get so frustrated, we don't get the result we want, even though we are disrupting, putting ourselves in a very disruptive rhythm. So, you are a rhythmic human. put yourself into a beautiful rhythm. Okay. Number four, if
[49:48] you live in a female body, everything everything you do is health. I've been having this funny realization of myself recently that everything that's coming out of my mouth lately has been about
[50:02] out of my mouth lately has been about traffic. I am anti-traffic. I'm like, "Oh, did you go? Wow, how is the traffic?" "Oh, I can't do that because the traffic is bad." I don't know why I keep talking about the
[50:14] traffic. And finally, I realized because my nervous system was so frazzled that I couldn't even handle traffic. And so I finally got my nervous system balanced. So I don't want to put myself there
[50:26] again. Who would have thought traffic Who would have thought traffic was health? But it is. So I wanted to start the conversation with you guys tonight that it's really important that
[50:40] tonight that it's really important that we start looking at every aspect of our we start looking at every aspect of our life as contributing to our health. They all have to be equal. Otherwise the tools that we give you will not work.
[50:53] And then the last thing I'll say and I can't emphasize this so much like these five things I'm like we have we have lost our way. We think health is what we eat. We think health is how we move. We think health is how we sleep. Yes, those
[51:09] are all important. But we got to get these five things down first. We've got to get some balance down and get some perspective down. Otherwise, you will go crazy. Has anybody else felt like they did one tool for their health and they
[51:24] stopped and they're like, "Ah, shoot. then you go and you do another tool and you're like, "Oh, that doesn't work." idiot. Okay, let me go over to this tool. And we are just going from thing
[51:38] to thing to thing. What's going on up here? Where's your nervous system at? How are you honoring your rhythms? What do we know about the other parts of your life? Because if you're not losing
[51:53] weight, maybe it's because you're resisting something. resisting something. And I can't tell you the magic macro to help you undo resistance. We have to start approaching this from a
[52:06] different perspective. And one of the most important things that we start to understand is the hormonal hierarchy which will be in my talks will come which will be in my talks will come through the whole weekend which is we
[52:19] all go to try to solve our hormonal problems when we're in perry menopause problems when we're in perry menopause and menopause by by going after the sex hormones. This is why I'm like infuriated with the HRT conversation.
[52:33] Not because I'm anti-HRT, but you can't take a woman at 42 years old that has a take a woman at 42 years old that has a hemoglobin A1C of 6.0 and slap a goddamn patch on her and her problems go away. Does not work like that. You can't take
[52:48] somebody whose nervous system is so whacked out and their cortisol is so high and give them an ompic shot and think that their weight loss is health. think that their weight loss is health. It does not work like that. So when we
[53:03] look at the hierarchy, it basically says that at the bottom of the hormonal progesterone, estrogen, and testosterone. Those are controlled by insulin. How many of you saw that we we don't call
[53:17] many of you saw that we we don't call PCOS PCOS anymore? We call it POS. God, I was like, of course, what? Of course. We've been I've been telling people for years, I'm not saying I'm not the only one. A lot of people have been saying
[53:29] for years that PCOS is insulin resistance and now we officially changed it to PMOS. Anybody here? You got anybody lost in what I'm talking about? Polytabolic endocrine
[53:43] uh metabolic endocrine ov ovarian syndrome. like they threw all the all the different endocrine systems into there and they basically admitted that your hormones go off because your metabolic system goes off. Okay, all I
[53:59] hierarchy and see, oh, insulin controls sex hormones. That makes sense. I honestly think they did this so they can start prescribing weight loss drugs to every and insurance will pay for it. I'm hellbent to certain
[54:13] that's what's going on. But then we look at cortisol and you I h I have so many women that I've been trying to help them get their metabolic health back on track and they're like, "Yeah, you know, I'm not sleeping. I've been like working so
[54:27] much. My marriage is falling apart. Um I go to the gym 10 times, you know, a week. I'm I'm doing one meal a day and I'm not Right. You see where I'm going Yeah. because you put your cortisol so
[54:40] high that your body is like going into insulin resistance from your stressed out life. And at the top of the hierarchy is Oxytocin is what we're getting right now. I have come to decide to to really
[54:56] understand that the best thing I can do for my 56-year-old body that has just for my 56-year-old body that has just been through a whole lot of trauma is to connect and find oxytocin. Because when we hug, when we connect,
[55:11] when we listen, when you help somebody feel seen, you get oxytocin and I get oxytocin. We both get oxytocin. And when we get oxytocin, we bring down cortisol. And when we bring down cortisol, we finally become insulin sensitive. And
[55:26] when we bring down our insulin to an appropriate level, now we can balance our hormones, right? So if you don't like where your hormones are at, I want you to approach it from
[55:39] this level. Otherwise, you will be putting patches and creams and gels and pellets and doing everything you possibly can to regulate your hormones and you will drive yourself crazy. And if you don't understand the impact of
[55:53] cortisol and you're trying to lose weight or you're trying to get out of a di diabetic state and you don't understand that by picking up your phone and looking at social media or looking at all the texts or looking at emails
[56:06] that you that is actually making you gain weight. cortisol goes up, you become insulin resistant. And so then you go rushing to
[56:20] somebody like me and you're [music] like okay what's the best fasting length for okay what's the best fasting length for X Y and Z and it is be literally as I now have this awareness it has become incredibly difficult for me to answer
[56:33] that [music] question for you because you need to assess where this hierarchy is [music] at which is why principle number two is regulate first and when you regulate first [music] then every single health habit that you
[56:48] do from this point forward will feel effortless [music] and will give you a result. If you like this video, you're definitely going to this video, you're definitely going to want to check out the next
