Persona 3 Movie is a Train Wreck
47sStrong, controversial criticism of the third Persona 3 movie incites debate among fans.
▶ Play ClipThis video provides an in-depth review and ranking of all anime adaptations of the Persona video game series, focusing on Persona 3, 4, and 5. The creator analyzes the faithfulness, pacing, character development, and visual quality of each adaptation, highlighting successes and failures. The overall conclusion reflects on the difficulty of translating the lengthy, story-rich Persona games into anime.
The creator states Persona is one of their favorite franchises and they use a lot of Persona music in their videos.
Persona wasn't hugely popular until Persona 5 in 2017, but most of its adaptations were released prior, which is unusual. The creator notes the series has a long history of adaptations (anime, manga, drama CDs, stage productions).
The Persona 3 story is adapted into four movies, which is a challenge given the game's length (70-100 hours). The creator notes the first movie is faithful but has pacing issues, while the second improves significantly in its second half. The third movie is criticized as a 'train wreck' for sacrificing other characters' arcs to focus on the protagonist, Makoto. The fourth movie, 'Winter of Rebirth', is praised as one of the best video game adaptations, brilliantly handling the characters' fear of death.
P4A is a 26-episode TV series, praised as one of the greatest video game adaptations. It is more comedic and light-hearted than the game, which works surprisingly well. The protagonist, Yu Narukami, is portrayed as a confident troll, which is a major highlight. The English dub is highly recommended. The series handles emotional moments well, particularly the scene with Nanako in the hospital.
P4GA is an adaptation of the enhanced re-release, Persona 4 Golden. It is criticized as 'extremely not very good' due to poor animation (off-model, janky), an anthology-style structure that doesn't work, and a focus on the unpopular character Marie. It fails to justify its existence compared to the original P4A.
P5A is described as a 'god-awful piece of [ __ ]' and a 'textbook example of a garbage video game anime'. It is a rushed, ugly adaptation that tries to faithfully retell a 100-hour game in a single season. The protagonist, Joker, is boring and underdeveloped. The animation is of poor quality with bad CGI. The English dub provides some minor entertainment value. The creator recommends playing the game instead.
This is an original anime series, not an adaptation. It is a non-canon sequel set 10 years after Persona 3. It is a slow-paced, character-driven series with some interesting concepts but overall is 'forgettable'. The creator notes it is one of A1 Pictures' first projects.
The creator provides a ranking: 1. Persona 3: Winter of Rebirth, 2. Persona 4 The Animation, 3. Persona 3: Midsummer Night's Dream, 4. Persona 3: Spring of Birth, 5. Persona -trinity soul-, 6. Persona 3: Falling Down, 7. Persona 4 The Golden Animation, 8. Persona 5 The Animation. They conclude that the best adaptations are faithful but unique companion pieces that expand on the source material.
The best Persona anime adaptations are those that understand their limitations and respectfully expand upon the source material with their own ideas, acting as faithful but unique companion pieces to the games, rather than flawed attempts at direct replication.
"The title is accurate; the video is a comprehensive review of all the Persona anime adaptations, many of which are indeed bizarre or of varying quality."
Why does the creator say Persona's adaptations were released at an unusual time?
The series wasn't very popular until Persona 5 exploded in the West in 2017, but most adaptations were released years prior.
1:06
What is the main criticism of 'Persona 3 The Movie #3: Falling Down'?
It is a 'train wreck' that sacrifices the development of all other characters to focus on Makoto and Ryoji.
16:08
According to the creator, which Persona 4 anime is the 'crown jewel of anime adaptations of video games'?
Persona 4 The Animation (P4A).
93:04
What unique trait does Yu Narakami, the protagonist in Persona 4 The Animation, have?
He is portrayed as a confident troll, taking the most humorous dialogue options from the game.
37:32
Why is Persona 5 The Animation considered a failure?
It is a rushed, ugly, one-season adaptation of a 100-hour game. The protagonist Joker is boring, and the animation quality is poor.
58:41
What is Persona -trinity soul-?
An original anime series set 10 years after Persona 3, but it's a non-canon alternate universe.
79:11
What is the key to a good Persona anime adaptation, according to the creator?
The best adaptations are faithful but unique companion pieces that expand on the source material with their own ideas.
90:11
P5A is a textbook example of a bad video game anime
This is the creator's most scathing critique, summarizing the fundamental flaws of the adaptation: being too faithful yet poorly executed.
58:41P4A is the 'crown jewel' of game adaptations
This high praise identifies a specific adaptation as a standout success, providing a clear benchmark for quality.
30:11Persona 3 Movie #3 is a 'falling down' train wreck
This strong opinion highlights a major failure in the adaptation process: prioritizing one character's arc at the expense of all others.
16:08The best adaptations are faithful yet unique companion pieces
This concluding principle encapsulates the creator's core thesis on what makes a successful video game adaptation.

[00:12] thank you
[00:14] viewers of my channel over the past year
[00:16] are functioning eardrums I've probably
[00:17] noticed that I use a lot of persona
[00:19] music in my videos and just in case you
[00:20] haven't connected the dots yet I like
[00:22] persona
[00:25] Persona is one of my favorite video game
[00:26] franchises of all time and while I
[00:28] haven't played much of the wider
[00:29] mechaten franchise that spun off off
[00:31] outside of smt5 although I definitely
[00:33] will someday my love for these games
[00:34] cannot be understated I'm not going to
[00:36] sit here and explain in depth how
[00:37] incredible these games are because most
[00:39] of you watching have I ever never heard
[00:40] of persona or have only played Persona 5
[00:42] so I'll just go out in a limb and say
[00:44] please play them through any means
[00:46] necessary
[00:48] you as someone who's been especially
[00:49] bored the past two years because of
[00:52] um these have been my beloved Comfort
[00:54] games ever since Persona 4 Golden
[00:55] gotport to the PC thank God and I'd love
[00:58] to make a full retrospective on the
[00:59] franchise someday including the games
[01:01] that Mandela affected themselves out of
[01:03] existence please put your games at this
[01:04] I beg you as with any incredibly popular
[01:06] video game franchise adaptations of the
[01:08] story in depth of medium such as TV and
[01:10] film are expected but what's strange
[01:12] about Persona specifically is that the
[01:13] series wasn't really that popular until
[01:15] Persona 5 exploded over in the West in
[01:17] 2017 and the majority of the adaptations
[01:19] personas had were released years prior
[01:22] that's not to say Persona wasn't known
[01:23] at all it had a decent following from
[01:25] Persona 3 onwards and especially after
[01:27] Persona 4 but you'd usually expect these
[01:29] kinds of adaptations once the series in
[01:31] question reaches absurd levels of
[01:32] popularity I mean hell is the Mario Bros
[01:34] movie at the decency to release after
[01:36] Super Mario World and then I actually
[01:38] began taking a look at how many
[01:39] adaptations Persona has had over the
[01:41] years and the list is bloody extensive
[01:43] like we're not just talking anime here
[01:45] we're talking manga drama CDs and Stage
[01:47] Productions
[01:49] [Music]
[01:55] Persona 1 had a serialized manga in 1996
[01:58] well you do now how some of these go
[02:00] past being adaptations end up being
[02:02] extensions of the series as Canon
[02:04] exclusive to that specific medium I'd
[02:05] love to cover all of these someday if I
[02:07] can even get my hands on some of them
[02:09] okay that's [ __ ] up getting back on
[02:11] track and ignoring atlas's questionable
[02:13] Ventures into making money it just
[02:15] simply surprised me that they were doing
[02:16] stuff like this before Persona five heck
[02:18] before Persona 4 but that's all for
[02:20] another day we're here today to talk
[02:22] about the more well-known adaptations of
[02:23] the franchise so as being the Persona
[02:25] anime and movies when tackling a series
[02:29] of games for each installment can take
[02:30] up to 100 hours to Simply complete
[02:32] trying to condense a lot of that down
[02:33] into 24 episodes or simply 6 hours
[02:36] spanning over four films can be quite a
[02:38] challenge Persona 3 4 and 5 are
[02:40] intimidatingly dense games and creative
[02:42] Liberties need to be taken to ensure
[02:44] that an anime adaptation can present the
[02:46] main story in a digestible format paired
[02:48] out of trying to give the mute
[02:49] protagonists of each game their own
[02:50] distinct personalities and you've got
[02:52] yourself a daunting task ahead of you
[02:53] some have notable moments of success
[02:55] some absolutely succeed and some of them
[02:58] well you know some of them could be
[03:00] better so with these games having such a
[03:01] long history of anime adaptations and
[03:03] with such varying levels of quality I
[03:05] thought it'd be fun to go over all of
[03:07] them or at least the ones people
[03:08] actually know of and doing in depth
[03:10] review comparing them to the games how
[03:12] they stand based on their own narrates
[03:13] and doing a ranking evolving towards the
[03:15] end a lot of this video will be very
[03:16] opinionated and biased but I'll try to
[03:18] keep most of it on level of which most
[03:20] of you can understand also there will be
[03:21] massive spoilers for each of the modern
[03:23] Persona games in this video so if you
[03:24] haven't played them yet and I suggest
[03:25] you do so unless you don't care we're
[03:27] good let's begin the operation
[03:29] [Music]
[03:33] I've decided that instead of going in
[03:35] order of release I'm going to go in
[03:37] order when the games were made because I
[03:38] think that'll make the video flow a lot
[03:40] better so yeah Persona 3 is my favorite
[03:42] game in the franchise
[03:44] if I'm using the controllable party mod
[03:46] on PC but apart from that Persona 3 is a
[03:48] fantastic game the atmospheres are
[03:50] luring the characters are mostly
[03:51] compelling outside of the villains you
[03:53] little the story is a little slow to
[03:55] start and the gameplay has its quirks
[03:57] but you've got yourself a remarkably
[03:58] solid game with well-executed themes and
[04:00] moments that emotionally destroy me 70
[04:03] to 80 hours is the average run time for
[04:05] this game possibly 100 if the answer
[04:07] gets you staring down the barrel of your
[04:08] evoker if you catch my drift that's a
[04:11] lot of video game so how is it adapted
[04:13] well uh four movies there's a lot to
[04:17] cover here the Persona 3 chord Trilogy
[04:19] was produced by AIC well I lie the first
[04:22] movie was produced by AIC but the other
[04:24] free movies were produced by none other
[04:26] than
[04:27] A1 pictures but don't worry the majority
[04:30] of Staff who worked on these movies were
[04:31] carried over from when it was produced
[04:32] by AIC which explains why the animation
[04:34] doesn't give me the urge to stick a lit
[04:36] firework in my eyes I'm bringing up who
[04:37] produced these movies so I can gush
[04:39] about the animation for them because
[04:40] these are some absolutely gorgeous
[04:42] looking movies everything from the
[04:44] lighting the colors the aesthetic the
[04:46] detail you could not ask for better
[04:48] looking movies that captured the essence
[04:49] and atmosphere of Persona 3 with music
[04:51] by The Man himself Shoji meguro
[04:53] returning to give his soundtrack from
[04:55] the original game more cinematic Flair
[04:56] as well as composing multiple original
[04:58] absolute bangers I'm gonna go over these
[05:01] movies as fast as I can but be aware
[05:02] that there's a lot of content here so
[05:04] let's start from the beginning
[05:05] [Music]
[05:13] as far as adaptations of video games
[05:15] tend to go spring of birth is probably
[05:17] as faithful as you can possibly get this
[05:19] movie adapts roughly the first 15 to 20
[05:21] hours or so Persona 3's story so from
[05:23] the beginning to the second full moon
[05:25] operation and the recruitment of fuka
[05:27] and it's rather straightforward with
[05:28] that my main issue with the film is the
[05:30] incredibly janky pacing that it has
[05:32] obviously trying to cram 20 hours of
[05:34] gameplay into an hour and a half is
[05:35] going to present some issues but if you
[05:37] chose to adapt an 80-hour game as a film
[05:39] series then prepare for unforeseen
[05:40] consequences or get back to the drawing
[05:42] board you can feel the movie tended to
[05:44] rush through several scenes that becomes
[05:45] quite apparent when you realize that in
[05:47] order to even make Cuts in 20 hours or
[05:49] something down to 120 for that runtime
[05:50] work they have to skip over several days
[05:52] of gameplay to progress the story then
[05:54] it kind of takes away from the Persona
[05:55] experience Persona games at least the
[05:57] modern ones work on a calendar system
[05:59] where everything you do progresses the
[06:01] day forward time is fleeting you only
[06:03] have so much of it so try to make the
[06:04] most out of the time you have with your
[06:06] friends while balancing out your school
[06:07] Life and Adventures through the game's
[06:09] respective Shadow worlds so seeing these
[06:11] movies take massive leaps from specific
[06:13] days on the calendar is understandable
[06:15] to keep the main story in Focus but It
[06:16] ultimately takes away from the second
[06:18] main appeal of the series The Social
[06:20] Links now I'm not about to say Persona 3
[06:22] starter Social Links are the best in
[06:24] this series Kenji can take a hike into
[06:25] Satan's ass crack and The Gourmet King
[06:27] can have a coronary heart attack right
[06:29] in front of me and my response would
[06:30] still probably be I don't care but
[06:32] reducing the Social Links to Mere cameos
[06:33] or showing them in montages to show the
[06:35] passage of time sort of hurts the appeal
[06:37] of persona because if you don't at least
[06:39] dedicate a small bit of time to show
[06:40] Makoto interacting and helping his
[06:42] friends of seas and there's no real
[06:43] reason to put the calendar system in the
[06:45] movie aside from aesthetic purposes
[06:47] because we don't feel like the fleeting
[06:48] of time is remotely important or that
[06:50] Makoto is spending his time wisely
[06:52] outside of these montages there's a bit
[06:53] of a debate as to if Persona can
[06:55] actually be perfectly adapted from video
[06:57] game to Anime in theory it should be
[06:59] easier since RPGs usually have far more
[07:01] detail than substantive plots than most
[07:03] video games but factoring in persona's
[07:05] story length paints a very clear picture
[07:07] it's a stretch to say that a single
[07:09] season of a show can cover this much
[07:10] content is usually enough story and
[07:12] Slice of Life moments in Persona to feel
[07:14] like two to three seasons of an anime so
[07:16] making the percent of free movies well
[07:18] movies feels like a major handicap and
[07:20] at least the series feeling like a
[07:21] glorified highlight reel of events from
[07:23] the game at times I'd like to remind
[07:25] everyone the Persona 4's anime came out
[07:27] before this movie and while it didn't
[07:29] handle the Social Links in the best way
[07:30] it at least made an effort to show them
[07:32] helping of characters outside the main
[07:34] cast
[07:35] I have a doubt where I'm just salty
[07:36] Makoto didn't romance to hero and that
[07:38] this discontinued this line of thinking
[07:40] uh rights Makoto you probably heard me
[07:43] say that well a big hurdle each
[07:45] adaptation had to overcome was the
[07:46] character of the protagonist each
[07:48] protagon each Persona game is in use
[07:49] with no personality other than the one
[07:51] you give them for your dialogue choices
[07:53] so whether or not Joker is a timid nerd
[07:55] or a massive troll is down to you I knew
[07:58] you were gonna say that obviously this
[07:59] wouldn't work for an anime as a protagon
[08:01] is required to talk so they not only
[08:03] need a Canon name but a personality to
[08:05] boots enter Makoto Yuki so your dreams
[08:08] of naming the MC banging kawakami are
[08:10] unfortunately over I'm aware that is
[08:12] called Minato in the manga but I don't
[08:14] [ __ ] care Persona 3 had a lot of cold
[08:16] and apathetic dialogue choices that you
[08:18] could choose with the most common one
[08:19] being a massive meme well you should so
[08:22] in Spring of birth Makoto is essentially
[08:24] the essence of those dialogue choices
[08:26] he's hilariously called and apathetic
[08:28] towards anyone and anything and while he
[08:29] can come off as having the personality
[08:31] of cardboard in this movie the rest of
[08:33] the movie's majorly improve him and
[08:34] towards the end of this movie he does
[08:36] get some interesting development due to
[08:37] being emotionally scarred by the death
[08:39] of his parents 10 years prior Makoto was
[08:41] emotionally shut himself off from the
[08:42] world choosing not to get attached to
[08:44] people out of fear of being hurt when he
[08:46] loses them you may be hearing Nissan
[08:47] going but that's chidori's Arc but Imma
[08:50] let that slide it fits the themes of the
[08:52] story quite well and it's not a
[08:54] one-to-one recreation of chidori's Arc
[08:56] so overall I think they handled Makoto
[08:58] well also there's one scene at the end
[08:59] where he rides a motorcycle to his
[09:01] friend's rescue while mass destruction
[09:02] plays and I thought it was pretty funny
[09:06] [Laughter]
[09:08] or who cares
[09:13] okay I won't lie that it's actually
[09:16] pretty cool aside from Makoto I was
[09:17] surprised to see that jinpay's
[09:19] characterization is a Monumental step up
[09:21] from how the game presented him I gave
[09:22] that Jim pay's entire point in the game
[09:24] is that he's a selfish twit who
[09:25] eventually starts taking things more
[09:27] seriously and I love him but I won't
[09:29] deny he boarded on being intolerable the
[09:31] movie still shows Jim Bates kind of an
[09:33] habitat but shows his struggles earlier
[09:35] on June pay is a character who joins C
[09:37] is to play Hero and get some kind of
[09:38] recognition in his life since he doesn't
[09:40] care for studying and as a person is
[09:42] seen as unremarkable which is why he
[09:43] grows incredibly jealous of Makoto
[09:45] easily obtaining the spotlight thanks to
[09:47] him being a better fighter and being
[09:48] able to wield multiple personas during
[09:50] the game this jealousy is really drawn
[09:52] out and he's a total dick to you at
[09:53] times however in the movie well they
[09:55] don't completely froze Ark out the
[09:56] window just having him grow respect from
[09:58] Makoto as they work together during the
[10:00] first full moon operation does so much
[10:01] Justice for him and the toning down of
[10:03] his more annoying Tendencies helps to
[10:05] make him a flawed but very likable
[10:07] character I honestly see it as an
[10:08] improvement I also appreciate how fuka
[10:10] was handled establishing her presence
[10:12] earlier in the story and instead of just
[10:14] pooping her into the plot later on
[10:15] Lakota gets to establish a bondling
[10:17] connection to fuka and fuku's friendship
[10:19] with natsuki is a lot more believable
[10:20] especially after makota gives her a
[10:22] satisfying reality check in fact I
[10:24] appreciated that they tried to change up
[10:26] how the second operation played out by
[10:27] having Makoto guard natsuki at the end
[10:29] while the others find fuka and tackle
[10:31] the shadow though it is a little shaky
[10:33] and I didn't like how much of a [ __ ]
[10:34] yukari was which is saying something and
[10:37] ultimately it works in favor of
[10:38] progressing Makoto's character and
[10:40] breaking his apathetic shell but it's a
[10:42] little odd the film aims about a real
[10:44] sense of closure which wow no way really
[10:46] but it's still an Abrupt end it's very
[10:48] much a part one film and overall I found
[10:51] it enjoyable but only really as a fan of
[10:53] the video game I wouldn't really
[10:55] recommend this to someone unfamiliar
[10:56] with the games I still find that to be
[10:58] the superior experience but for a video
[11:00] game adaptation it surprisingly alrights
[11:02] it's very faithful regardless of its
[11:04] pacing issues and a good way to set up
[11:06] the next three movies
[11:09] [Music]
[11:12] please
[11:16] okay so this movie rather ambitiously
[11:18] takes a fourth of the overall story and
[11:20] does its best to adapt it but at first I
[11:22] wasn't really on board not only did the
[11:24] first half of the film feel like it was
[11:26] on autopilot but how questionable the
[11:28] pacing was but it also felt like they
[11:29] were rushing the new characters into the
[11:31] plot without any of the grace the game
[11:32] had I guess was introduced all right I
[11:34] guess but canvas frantically dropped
[11:36] into a scene that he wasn't in
[11:37] previously and Koro how do you rush Koro
[11:40] he's a dog I won't lie the movie had
[11:42] some funny moments and for some reason
[11:44] kashiwaki from Persona 4 is on the beach
[11:46] during the Babe hunt scene and I know
[11:48] that this happens in Persona 3 Portable
[11:50] but why but the film was very clunky for
[11:53] its first half and I was judging how the
[11:54] rest would go
[11:55] that was until my boy Shinji
[12:01] Shinji just literally barges into a
[12:03] scene that he was never in during the
[12:05] game no elaboration and kicks total air
[12:07] because the movie had been handling his
[12:09] return to seize a hell of a lot better
[12:11] by stopping it from being so drawn out
[12:13] he comes to everyone's Rescue by his own
[12:15] will after their lives were threatened
[12:17] by Strega which not only gives my man
[12:18] some more death but it's also the
[12:20] Catalyst from the Monumental Improvement
[12:22] on the game's storied the second half of
[12:23] this movie is oh yeah I'm going there
[12:26] throw me into the pits of persona
[12:27] Twitter I don't care second half of
[12:29] Midsummer Night's stream is really good
[12:31] it's not only paced really well but they
[12:34] take good creative liberties from the
[12:35] main story instead of Ken figuring out
[12:37] that Shinji killed his mom in the same
[12:39] scene where Aki begs him to rejoin C's
[12:41] in a millionth time we have Ken and
[12:43] Shinji bonding with each other for a
[12:44] good chunk of time they both learn to
[12:46] care for each other Ken treats Shinji
[12:48] like a parental figure that he's been
[12:49] missing for so long with Shinji trying
[12:51] his best to make him happy knowing what
[12:52] he did to Ken's mom even if it was an
[12:54] accident it's beautifully tragic and it
[12:56] not only fixes the biggest complaints
[12:58] people had about Ken and manages to make
[12:59] him extremely compelling but to give
[13:01] Shinji a much larger and more meaningful
[13:03] presence in the story making October 4th
[13:06] hits a lot harder and while the movies
[13:07] just like the game don't handle Striker
[13:09] that well the claims of hypocrisy they
[13:11] aim at Seas for enjoying the lives they
[13:13] lead thanks to the Dark Hour actually
[13:14] have more of an impact instead of being
[13:16] some petty insult that gin shoots out
[13:18] his mouth as in it not only affects
[13:20] jumping like it did in the game but it
[13:21] also affects fuka as well as Makoto oh
[13:24] yeah Makoto really becomes a character
[13:25] in this film not only says apathy slowly
[13:28] slipping away as he grows to care for
[13:29] his friends and for life in general but
[13:31] he also contemplates ending the Dark
[13:32] Hour as the Dark Hours the reason he and
[13:34] his friends came together in the first
[13:36] place with the Dark Hour gone and
[13:38] without that common goal what reason
[13:39] would they have to stay together that's
[13:41] my coach's dilemma and I think it's done
[13:42] wonderfully and it helps the idea in the
[13:44] game of seas being Collies first but
[13:46] becoming friends over time I think it's
[13:49] definitely the most emotionally complex
[13:50] out of the protagonists not to say they
[13:52] aren't developed either but well mostly
[13:54] you're definitely not developed but more
[13:56] new later but Makoto's the most
[13:58] compelling to me and the ending scene on
[14:00] October 4th is even or heartbreaking it
[14:02] was in the game so uh spoilers
[14:08] thanks to the amazing development given
[14:10] to Ken and Shinji being in the story for
[14:12] more than a month shinji's death scene
[14:13] really hits it not only affects Makoto
[14:16] and the rest of the cast but it's
[14:17] impactful in the way that the original
[14:18] scene wasn't thanks to giving the
[14:20] characters a little more time to get to
[14:21] know each other overall while Midsummer
[14:23] Night's Dream starts out really oddly
[14:25] once you get to the halfway point it
[14:27] becomes an entirely different film it
[14:29] [ __ ] carries how good it is I was not
[14:31] expecting it to be this good however I
[14:34] still have a few complaints first off in
[14:35] percent of three jumping meets Chidori
[14:37] before the hermit boss on September 5th
[14:39] and goes back to meet her several times
[14:41] however in this movie jumpy is present
[14:43] during the hermit boss and never saw
[14:45] Chidori on screen aside from one
[14:47] interaction when at this point in the
[14:48] game he's supposed to have been
[14:49] kidnapped by Chidori after growing
[14:51] attached to her through their previous
[14:52] conversations not only does leaving this
[14:54] out screw of jimpi's character Arc and
[14:56] developments but the way they try to
[14:57] mend this in the next movie makes my
[14:59] head start to spin I also didn't really
[15:00] like how Ken only realized that Shinji
[15:02] killed his mom after his Persona started
[15:04] going berserk I guess you can make the
[15:06] excuses the aggressive and wild nature
[15:07] of the person owner that triggered his
[15:09] PTSD and that's fine but it comes off as
[15:11] a little cheap in execution what I also
[15:13] don't like is how shinji's Persona goes
[15:15] berserk in front of everyone leading to
[15:16] him taking the pills needed to suppress
[15:18] it in front of akihiko while I like the
[15:20] scene between them here and it's pretty
[15:22] heartbreaking I much preferred not
[15:24] knowing Shinji was dying from taking
[15:25] those pills until October 4th and for
[15:27] having the hospital scene where jodori's
[15:29] Persona starts attacking her until she's
[15:30] given the Pill by Shinji having Takaya
[15:33] reveal to Ken and the player that
[15:34] shinji's destined to dino matter what
[15:36] Ken does is a much more effective reveal
[15:38] and having Aki grow suspicious of Shinji
[15:40] for knowing what the pill does was a
[15:42] smart way of letting us know that
[15:43] something's not right with Shinji
[15:44] instead of just telling us that he's
[15:45] slowly dying way before Takaya puts a
[15:48] bullet in his chest other than that
[15:49] though I'd still recommend the movie to
[15:50] people who have played the game but I
[15:52] definitely feel like the second half of
[15:53] it can be appreciated even by people who
[15:55] haven't played persona 3. it's less of a
[15:57] delightful mixed bag with more triumphs
[15:58] than misses like the first movie was and
[16:00] more of a slow burn before suddenly
[16:02] becoming really good kind of film
[16:08] falling down huh yeah that's one way to
[16:11] say it all right I'm not gonna sugarcoat
[16:13] anything here this movie is kind of a
[16:15] train wreck it's an utter bastardization
[16:17] of percent of prehistorian every
[16:18] Department the entire film was dedicated
[16:20] to developing Makoto and that's it
[16:22] Makoto exists in a vacuum compared to
[16:24] everything else which not only takes a
[16:26] back seat it is actively Drop Kicked
[16:28] after the realm of importance this
[16:30] entire film reads like some shady yowie
[16:32] fan fiction from some lovesick Black
[16:33] Butler friend who sadly crawled out of
[16:35] the abortion bin remember ryoji yeah the
[16:37] human Reincarnation of pharaohs the boy
[16:39] makota talks to throughout the story you
[16:41] know how he shows up in November and
[16:43] fulfills his main purpose in the story
[16:44] to be the appraiser of death presenting
[16:46] you and your friends with an ultimatum
[16:48] that will determine your fate and then
[16:49] exits at the end of December well he's
[16:51] here for the entire movie as the
[16:53] righteous decided to tie ryuji into
[16:55] makojo's character Arc along with some
[16:57] implied romantic subtexts apparently I
[16:59] mean I understand that POV but don't
[17:01] quote me on that and I mean fine if
[17:02] focusing on their friendship works from
[17:04] a coach's character which it honestly
[17:05] does I can put up with it what I refuse
[17:07] to tolerate is everything this movie
[17:09] ruins in order to progress the
[17:10] development of a single character the
[17:12] pacing is god-awful the entire film
[17:14] zooms past crucial plot points and
[17:16] scenes that are integral to the
[17:18] narrative and development of these
[17:19] characters remember the resolution
[17:20] scenes yeah those scenes are arguably
[17:23] the most important moments for their
[17:24] respective characters that have been
[17:25] built up ever since the characters were
[17:26] introduced as well as causing their
[17:28] personas to undergo a second Awakening
[17:30] yeah those were such important and
[17:32] character defining moments are the
[17:33] amalgamation of everything they've been
[17:34] through throughout the course of the
[17:36] story being some of the best scenes in
[17:37] the game what does the movie do with
[17:39] them Focus touching goodbye to natsuki
[17:41] allowing her to realize that she must do
[17:42] everything in her power to protect those
[17:44] she's connected with and ultimately
[17:45] becomes a much more outgoing person it's
[17:47] treated like a complete joke as ryoji
[17:49] forced Makoto to start helping around
[17:50] the school to earn some cash and instead
[17:52] of fuka asking natsuka to come up and
[17:54] meet her so they could talk ryoji lies
[17:56] in natsuki so she would come rushing up
[17:57] to the roof just to have a short crying
[17:59] session with fouca where neither of them
[18:01] learn anything mitsuers one to one with
[18:03] yukari where she reassures herself of
[18:04] her own reason for living by fulfilling
[18:06] her father's wish on adding the Dark
[18:07] Hour oh it happens but it is completely
[18:10] happy because halfway through the
[18:12] conversation yukari just suddenly
[18:14] reveals that she watched the undoctor
[18:15] tape from her father which is taken and
[18:17] half from her resolution scene where she
[18:19] realized that her father tried to end
[18:21] the Dark Hour instead of assisting in
[18:22] its creation so instead of getting a
[18:24] scene to herself we have instead slap
[18:26] Dash into the middle of another
[18:27] character's resolution where both
[18:28] characters come to the same conclusions
[18:30] as in the original game but the impact
[18:32] from them both is diminished akihika's
[18:34] resolution at shinji's funeral arguably
[18:36] one of the most emotionally charged
[18:37] scenes in the entire game where Aki
[18:39] Mourns a lot of his best friend and vows
[18:41] to face life's hardships head on and
[18:42] stop running from his past is told
[18:44] through a 20 second flashback that Aki
[18:45] repeats the Makoto just wow I can't even
[18:48] joke about it this is so bad it annoys
[18:52] me to no end especially Aki's resolution
[18:54] how can you screw up that badly remember
[18:56] my comment earlier about how these
[18:58] movies sometimes feel like highlight
[18:59] rules of the game's plots Falling Down
[19:01] is basically just that statement in
[19:02] feature-link form these movies have some
[19:04] really good high moments when everything
[19:06] were works out as seen with the numerous
[19:07] story improvements in mid-summer but
[19:09] then there are some parts that are
[19:10] questionable even for adaptation
[19:11] standards I can't really say I hate
[19:13] these movies outside of this one because
[19:15] they're all really entertaining but they
[19:16] really demonstrate how difficult
[19:18] adapting a game like Persona really is
[19:20] and we aren't even done Jumpy's
[19:22] character changing and life-changing
[19:23] relationship with Chidori being the
[19:25] Catalyst for his Newfound sense of
[19:27] maturity and value in life allowing to
[19:28] end the dark hour after she sacrifices
[19:30] herself to save him from the brink of
[19:32] death is rushed up the Wazoo because
[19:33] someone in the writer's room went cuckoo
[19:35] for Coco Puffs and decided that instead
[19:36] of following the events of the game and
[19:38] for an important moment like your Dory
[19:39] kidnapping gympie in September naturally
[19:40] showing their relationship grows he
[19:42] comes to visit her in hospital they
[19:43] decided she was going to have gympie
[19:45] already kidnapped at the start of the
[19:46] film during the hanged man boss fight in
[19:49] November what and on top of this only
[19:52] deciding to show the glimpses of their
[19:54] relationship through flashbacks after
[19:56] the fact this movie is triggering my
[19:58] autism
[20:04] Oh What A pity such a meaningless death
[20:09] [Music]
[20:13] meaningless
[20:15] [Music]
[20:17] hmm
[20:20] laughs
[20:26] what
[20:29] [Music]
[20:49] foreign
[20:50] [Music]
[21:00] [Music]
[21:07] on top of this we have akutsuki who has
[21:09] like five minutes of total screen time
[21:11] for the previous two films and then it's
[21:13] revealed that the mustache trolling
[21:14] villain of a bastardize plot within the
[21:16] first 20 minutes and since the
[21:17] characters are so hard to write they
[21:18] didn't bother giving him more scenes of
[21:20] him being relevant in the plot that the
[21:21] game did he shows up for about five
[21:23] minutes over three movies rocks up to
[21:25] Tartarus of I guess going La Mao XD
[21:27] shoots miser's father doesn't elaborate
[21:29] and dies if that's happened in the game
[21:31] I would have had a sympathy seizure but
[21:32] of course forget all that nonsense we
[21:34] still have the hot spring scene thank
[21:36] you Atlas
[21:38] so much I have never had a movie Blue
[21:40] bull me this hard before after we go
[21:42] from an arguably great film at least in
[21:44] its second half to a movie that's just
[21:45] plain confusion to think about and
[21:47] there's very few redeeming aspects other
[21:49] than the obvious wow this looks and
[21:51] sounds pretty the only thing I can
[21:52] genuinely praise here when it comes to
[21:54] the storytelling is that despite the
[21:55] focus on the coach and ryoji ruining the
[21:57] film it at least Works their friendship
[21:59] is admittedly touching see Makoto slowly
[22:01] climb out with zapathan depression with
[22:03] ryoji's help is genuinely wholesome even
[22:05] if it overstate its welcome it works but
[22:07] if this new addition to the story is
[22:09] going to ruin all of what there was
[22:10] before it then keep it away this movie
[22:12] kind of irritated me as someone who
[22:14] loves the story and characters of
[22:15] Persona 3 the Sega completely undermines
[22:18] just to tell an entirely new story is
[22:19] frustrating to say the least and apart
[22:21] from these scenes with ryoji and the
[22:22] skimming of the plots nothing really
[22:24] happens here there's no action apart
[22:26] from the very beginning and the very end
[22:28] and while I definitely don't need action
[22:29] for film to be good especially for a
[22:31] Persona movie when all of the actual
[22:33] character writing is squandered it turns
[22:34] the movie into an Archer bore and after
[22:36] I finish falling down I was prepared for
[22:38] them next movie to be just as bad or
[22:40] even worse
[22:41] but somehow
[22:49] foreign
[22:52] [Music]
[23:08] okay that's it this is witchcraft no
[23:11] explanation no elaboration witchcraft
[23:13] you cannot go for making a complete
[23:15] backup of The Story You're adapting and
[23:17] then turn around to make one of the best
[23:19] video game adaptations I have ever seen
[23:21] yeah I'm going there this is one of the
[23:23] greatest video game movies I have ever
[23:25] watched It's Not only a fantastic
[23:27] adaptation of persona 3's ending it's
[23:29] also the first one of these movies that
[23:30] actually feels like a movie instead of a
[23:33] string of events from the game that are
[23:34] tied together by the emotions of the
[23:36] characters this movie is a clear
[23:38] structure and actual pacing it picks up
[23:40] where the last movie ended ryoji is
[23:42] defeated I guess and reveals himself as
[23:43] the appraiser of death revealing the
[23:45] fall of humanity is Drawing Near and
[23:47] that everyone's fate is sealed ryoji
[23:49] presents season ultimatum kill him and
[23:52] live in Blissful ignorance unafraid of
[23:53] death until the day of the inevitable or
[23:55] spare him in order to face off against
[23:57] Nix in a battle for everyone's Souls
[23:59] this is how everything happens in the
[24:01] game but then something odd happens for
[24:03] the first hour or so of the movie
[24:04] everyone has grown scared knowing that
[24:06] their deaths are drawing near it's a
[24:08] slow burn but it's so beautifully done
[24:10] watching as everyone goes through their
[24:12] lives in December scared of what awaits
[24:14] them with yukari specifically regressing
[24:16] so bad to the point where her fear for
[24:17] death causes their person to go berserk
[24:19] and start attacking them personas in
[24:21] Persona 3 are summoned by stifling one's
[24:23] fear of death and we've already seen
[24:25] what happens to people who have to force
[24:26] their personas to come out or have to
[24:27] take pills in order to keep them under
[24:29] control we've never seen a previously
[24:31] stable Persona user like yukari suddenly
[24:33] be attacked like this and it's not just
[24:35] yukaris brought to the lowest point
[24:37] everyone is jumpy has practically lost
[24:39] the world to live akihiko amitsuru are
[24:42] lost Ken has shut himself off fuka can
[24:45] do nothing but tremble and Makoto has
[24:47] lost any reason to care
[24:48] I I'm sorry I genuinely need to be shot
[24:51] the characters are put into these states
[24:52] in Persona 3 yes but the way these are
[24:54] translated to the film is strangely more
[24:57] captivating and the Liberties that have
[24:59] been taken I mean the impact of shinji's
[25:01] death is still felt here and instead of
[25:03] the characters talking to each other
[25:04] over the course of the month and
[25:06] affirming their stance on what decision
[25:07] to make and what they want to live for
[25:09] they all come to these conclusions on
[25:11] their own all of the arcs that were
[25:12] destroyed in the previous film are
[25:14] suddenly re-established acting like the
[25:16] bad execution never happened they
[25:17] remember everything they've been through
[25:19] they're brought to the lowest point of
[25:20] existence and are then powerfully
[25:22] redeveloped while the way the game
[25:23] handled these moments worked better for
[25:25] it as a game I believe this was the
[25:27] single most poignant and non-rushed way
[25:29] they could have handled the characters
[25:30] in this movie it's perfectly paced in
[25:32] somber nothing is undercut and Makoto
[25:35] look while I'm still salty about him
[25:36] taking up all the falling down it has
[25:38] ultimately led to a character who was
[25:39] now fully realized the scenes of
[25:41] Elizabeth may have come out of nowhere
[25:43] but what they did the story cannot be
[25:45] understated and in the second half of
[25:47] the film we're not even close to being a
[25:48] strong songs the first half and suffers
[25:50] from some slight pacing problems is
[25:52] still rather enjoyable well I'm
[25:54] disappointed that the next fight is
[25:55] essentially a 1v1 between NYX and Makoto
[25:58] it's still animated well enough and
[25:59] tense enough to be worth watching and of
[26:01] course Makoto's sacrifice is still
[26:03] soul-crushing and the climax of the film
[26:05] compared to the game is practically
[26:07] untouched and I'm thankful that it was
[26:09] left that way however who was the Galaxy
[26:11] brain that fought swapping the final
[26:12] boss thing with the burn my dread remix
[26:14] was a good idea this may be a nitpick
[26:17] but are you seriously telling me you're
[26:18] swapping one of the greatest battle
[26:19] themes in video game history with the
[26:21] most thematically Sound song Choice from
[26:23] a coach's sacrifice when they're only
[26:25] one scene apart like shut up well I
[26:28] could complain about petty stuff like
[26:30] Nick's being a CGI it's honestly such a
[26:32] disservice to the rest of the film's
[26:33] animation which is absolutely stunning
[26:35] and while they can complain that they
[26:37] quite literally zoomed past Strega and
[26:39] beat them into a relevancy both the
[26:40] movies and the game handled Striker very
[26:42] poorly and nothing about them being
[26:44] created or being acquaintances with
[26:45] akutsuki is developed enough or
[26:47] interesting enough to be worth talking
[26:48] about overall this movie Perfectly ties
[26:50] together Persona 3's themes and overall
[26:52] thesis and turns the sinking ship around
[26:54] to create one of the most emotionally
[26:56] gratifying and well-made video game
[26:57] adaptations I've ever seen I get that
[27:00] it's not a high bar to reach but it
[27:01] doesn't matter to me I can't believe how
[27:03] great this movie is it feels like an
[27:05] instructor like a film that I could
[27:07] actually show to someone and have them
[27:08] not be overwhelmed if I just explained
[27:10] shortly what happened before it I don't
[27:12] have anything else to really say it's
[27:13] just a solid film all around I'm tempted
[27:16] to say it's a bona fide Improvement in
[27:17] some areas compared to the game but I
[27:19] think both the movie and the game
[27:20] handled the same story in completely
[27:22] different ways and both of them work
[27:23] while I absolutely love the scene where
[27:25] everyone rediscovers their will to live
[27:27] I also appreciate the way the game
[27:28] handled it it's a great adaptation and a
[27:30] thankfully satisfying end to a rather
[27:32] uneven set of movies
[27:38] this is one of the most bizarrely
[27:40] inconsistent set of films I've ever
[27:42] watched the first one is an overall
[27:44] entertaining mixed bag there's a lot of
[27:46] things right than it does wrong the
[27:47] second one is a faster clock for half
[27:49] its run time before suddenly becoming
[27:51] absolutely brilliant the third one is a
[27:53] confusing mess that sacrifices
[27:54] satisfying story beats for its own ideas
[27:56] and the fourth one is a bizarrely and
[27:59] unexpectedly Beautiful film that makes
[28:01] the entire experience seem almost worth
[28:03] it this is a series of films that I
[28:05] definitely enjoyed but they severely
[28:07] suffer from trying to replicate the
[28:08] experience of the game too much as well
[28:10] as not knowing when to rain in when they
[28:12] go too far of the changes ironically the
[28:14] only thing really consistent about this
[28:15] movie is how awful the pacing is until
[28:18] we get to the last movie which is a lot
[28:19] more stable when adapting something you
[28:21] always need to take into account what is
[28:23] absolutely crucial to the narrative and
[28:25] what needs to be changed especially when
[28:26] it's a video game adaptation and what
[28:28] they show glimpses of getting it right
[28:30] it takes four movies for them to
[28:31] absolutely perfect that balance if I was
[28:34] told to recommend this chord Trilogy to
[28:35] people I think I'd be stuck because it
[28:37] all depends on how much more middling
[28:39] content you're willing to tolerate to
[28:40] stick with it to the point where it's
[28:41] mind-blowingly good especially if you
[28:43] plan on sticking until the end it has
[28:45] some standout moments that are clear
[28:47] improvements over the game's story but
[28:49] then there's a myriad of questionable
[28:50] writing decisions and Persona 3 the
[28:52] movie falling down I guess if you're a
[28:53] fan of Persona 3 then checking these
[28:55] movies out won't do any harm but if
[28:57] you've watched through this massive
[28:58] spoiler Fastener unconvinced by these
[29:00] movies then well play Persona 3. in fact
[29:03] overall I'd recommend Persona 3 as the
[29:04] ideal experience it likes a lot of the
[29:06] sporadic story enhancements the movies
[29:08] had but its storytelling is a lot more
[29:10] consistent for filling and impactful
[29:12] overall given that none of it is half if
[29:14] you wanted to get the percent of free
[29:15] movies and watch them legally then uh
[29:17] good luck with that bucko they're barely
[29:19] in stock in the UK despite being rather
[29:21] affordable even on Blu-ray I shudder to
[29:23] imagine what it's like in America look
[29:24] this is probably gonna get me in trouble
[29:26] but every percent of free movies
[29:27] available to watch on YouTube for free
[29:29] because the YouTube copyright system can
[29:31] suck my left testicle personally I
[29:32] watched them on 9anime because I wanted
[29:34] my foots to be in HD but if you can put
[29:36] up with 720p and these are worth
[29:38] watching if you don't want to get a
[29:39] virus the many invisible pop-ups in nine
[29:41] anime and Sir if you wants to watch
[29:43] these movies with English voice acting
[29:45] because the light sync for these movies
[29:46] is absolutely horrid again they're
[29:48] available on YouTube completely unedited
[29:50] and have jumped around regions on
[29:51] Netflix like a kangaroo Coke fiend also
[29:54] possible complications with the cast
[29:55] since fake Magna voices uh June pay and
[29:58] no one can decide if it's innocent or
[30:01] not anyways now that we're done with
[30:02] that
[30:03] [Music]
[30:08] [Applause]
[30:09] [Music]
[30:11] Persona 4D animation is as expected an
[30:14] anime adaptation of the story for the
[30:15] video game but unlike Persona 3 this
[30:18] adaptation was no straight out into four
[30:19] separate films and was instead made as a
[30:21] 26 episode TV series thank God not a
[30:24] dunk 100 of prequel trilogy too hard but
[30:26] it was realistically no way they were
[30:28] ever going to pull off an adaptation of
[30:29] an 80 hour video game of like four
[30:31] movies and not expect there to be some
[30:33] problems when it came to pacing they
[30:35] could not decide whether to stick to
[30:36] being a faithful adaptation or to take
[30:37] massive risks or make small tweaks to
[30:40] the story and while there are examples
[30:41] where this works in its favor it ends up
[30:43] being an incredibly uneven set of films
[30:45] if you are ever going to attempt to
[30:46] adapt the storyline of an RPG to a
[30:48] different medium a TV series will always
[30:50] be the safer bets as you get a wealth of
[30:52] time to explore signs of different
[30:53] characters reliably go through story
[30:55] arcs about the pacing collapsing in on
[30:56] itself and you also have the ability to
[30:58] take creative Liberties without them
[30:59] sabotaging the entire [ __ ] story what
[31:02] I'm trying to say is Persona 49
[31:03] animation is not just a great adaptation
[31:05] of persona 4. it's also one of the
[31:08] greatest video game adaptations period
[31:10] but first let's discuss persona 4.
[31:12] persona 4 holds a special place in my
[31:14] heart and none of the other games in the
[31:15] franchise can touch Persona 3 may be my
[31:17] favorite and Persona 5 comes close but
[31:19] Persona 4 was my introduction to this
[31:21] franchise I picked up the steam Port of
[31:23] the game in the summer of 2020 and
[31:24] played it for about two hours and uh
[31:26] then I stopped obviously for those who
[31:28] have played the game this was simply due
[31:29] to how obnoxiously long the game's
[31:31] opening is so what does a solid job all
[31:33] it sets up to do it definitely overstays
[31:35] its welcome compared to Persona 3 and
[31:36] especially Persona 5 but then I decided
[31:39] to pick up the game again in November
[31:40] that same year I'd finally gotten past
[31:42] the opening three hours and that's when
[31:43] everything fell into place I had never
[31:45] played a Persona game before and to say
[31:47] my knowledge of RPGs was lacking as an
[31:49] understatement I'm pretty sure I didn't
[31:51] know what a Xenoblade was until I
[31:52] remembered chakras and Smash Bros so to
[31:54] save the Persona 4's gameplay and social
[31:56] Sim elements caught me off guard with
[31:57] how good they were is just not selling
[31:59] it hard enough the game's story had me
[32:01] emotionally gripped I saw aspects of
[32:03] myself and many of the the characters
[32:04] they were forced to confront their true
[32:05] feelings meanwhile solving a murder case
[32:07] were trying to balance day-to-day school
[32:09] life and exploring the TV World which is
[32:11] when a meticulously designed and
[32:12] challenging gameplay kept me engaged and
[32:14] excited it was a game that had a
[32:15] perfectly balanced and well-written
[32:17] story constantly for only for a loop and
[32:19] squeezing me until I ended every tear
[32:21] out of my iduct it's been said many
[32:22] times before but Persona 4 makes you
[32:24] feel like you made real genuine friends
[32:26] and relationships this game made me cry
[32:28] like a [ __ ] and it's not even that dark
[32:30] the game had such a cozy and home-like
[32:33] atmosphere and it prevented me from
[32:34] focusing on anything else for the rest
[32:36] of the month like seriously I kicked the
[32:38] duchies and limit of an online
[32:40] photography class I was not screwing
[32:42] around and the ending of this game is a
[32:44] single cheesiest sickly sweet cliche
[32:47] anime ending I've ever seen but holy God
[32:49] it's perfect and I love it I'm biased
[32:52] towards this game unlike any other
[32:53] despite it not even being my favorite in
[32:55] the series which is why I was super
[32:57] anxious going into P40 animation P40
[33:00] animation is just like the Persona 3
[33:01] movie is being handled by AIC and and
[33:04] this time A1 pictures the script clean
[33:06] off of the show but they'll be back
[33:08] God God they'll be back in fact the
[33:10] animation is where I want to start now
[33:12] obviously this isn't a movie series so
[33:14] the higher quality consistency of P3 the
[33:16] movie's animation is not here and it's
[33:18] also worth noting this series was made
[33:20] before the P3 movies in 2011. I don't
[33:22] get why you would make a Persona 4
[33:24] Series first but okay but that's not to
[33:26] say the show doesn't look halfway decent
[33:28] because it certainly does as far as
[33:30] anime goes It's perfectly fine visually
[33:32] I really like the coloring and shading
[33:33] and the characters stay mostly on model
[33:35] I do have a few gripes the start of the
[33:37] show can feel oppressively gray now
[33:39] Persona 4 did start out with mostly gray
[33:41] skies but in the animation the coloring
[33:43] makes it feel all muggy and like it's
[33:44] always about to rain and that is the
[33:46] point considering how much of a role
[33:48] Weber has in P4 but it wasn't as
[33:50] distracting compared to the game like I
[33:51] think the contrast may have just been
[33:53] like severely lowered because it does
[33:55] look a lot greater than how it does in
[33:57] the game it's not a big issue though
[33:58] although there are also a few instances
[34:00] of characters going off model but hey
[34:02] that's nitpicking at this point it's not
[34:03] like A1 animated this animation aside
[34:06] one of my biggest scribes of the Persona
[34:08] 3 movies was that they couldn't choose
[34:09] wherever they were going to be
[34:10] straightforward adaptations with barely
[34:11] any changes or be Rife of new decisions
[34:14] it was a weird tug of war with only
[34:15] winter rebirth getting it done well
[34:17] overall by balancing the two near
[34:19] perfectly so how does persona 4's anime
[34:21] go about adapting the story well they
[34:23] got the balance right after all but what
[34:24] did they change now one thing some of
[34:26] you are probably aware of is that p4a is
[34:28] a much more comedic and light-hearted
[34:30] take on P4 storyline and I mean P4 is
[34:32] already the happiest and rated game
[34:34] about serial murder so that on paper
[34:36] doesn't seem too ideal but by some
[34:38] absolutely baffling Miracle they make it
[34:40] work and if I'm being honest the English
[34:42] dub is the ideal way to watch this
[34:44] series it absolutely kills of how funny
[34:46] the dialogue can get not to rank too
[34:48] hard in the original Japanese voice
[34:49] acting but I always found that Persona 4
[34:51] had my least favorite Japanese voice
[34:52] cast out of all of the games and the
[34:54] voice acting is very good I am not a
[34:56] doubly test at all and I would be crazy
[34:58] to even say that I may be a little
[35:00] biased because I play all the Persona
[35:01] games in English but it's not like I
[35:03] actively hate anything that isn't dubbed
[35:05] Persona 3's English voice acting is
[35:07] renowned for being absolutely ferocious
[35:09] at times despite many standout moments
[35:11] obviously the cast got better over time
[35:13] of subsequent spin-off titles but
[35:14] whoever was in charge of directing the
[35:15] VA for fuka specifically just did not
[35:17] give a [ __ ] and she's not even the worst
[35:19] of it no
[35:21] wow however Persona 4's original
[35:24] Japanese foreign
[35:27] at times when it comes to certain
[35:29] characters you think Teddy sounds
[35:31] annoying in the English dub you my
[35:32] friend have not heard the horrors of
[35:34] Teddy's Japanese voice acting Teddy can
[35:36] get high-pitched in English but is
[35:38] mostly tolerable but this
[35:41] [Music]
[35:46] Elle didn't die for this also Raceway
[35:48] sounds like a four-year-old and it makes
[35:50] her boss fight 100 times more disturbing
[35:52] if she sounded any younger I'd assume
[35:53] anyone who played this game sucked was
[35:55] put on a watch list again another dub
[35:57] purist by any means but P forced up
[35:59] personally just blows the original out
[36:01] the water and with all of the main cast
[36:03] returning in the anime I couldn't be
[36:04] happier to still have functioning ears
[36:06] the English cast to an absolutely
[36:08] magnificent job in the material they're
[36:09] given everyone sounds Pitch Perfect and
[36:11] all comedic moments are executed
[36:13] flawlessly the dialogue specifically is
[36:15] a major highlight usually with anime
[36:16] comedy You're Expecting like bare bone
[36:18] slapstick at the best of time since a
[36:20] lot of Japanese jokes often Get Lost in
[36:22] Translation now I'm not sure how much
[36:23] was lost in translation for p4a but the
[36:25] dialogue can be very witty and simple
[36:27] back and forth between characters like
[36:28] yosuke and chia is a joy to watch if we
[36:31] were standing next to each other talking
[36:32] it'd be too obvious over dork over has
[36:35] always got to be the last thing you say
[36:38] little space between us dork over by far
[36:41] the most notable and funniest part to
[36:42] show when it comes to dialogue is the
[36:44] dialogue that comes from the percent of
[36:45] four protagonists as previously stated
[36:47] with Persona 3 the anime adaptations
[36:49] have to find ways of fleshing out the
[36:50] mute Pro tags of the video games like in
[36:52] Makoto's case they're presented as an
[36:54] apathetic softy who slowed the overcomes
[36:56] his depression with his friends and
[36:57] desire for living as his motivation now
[36:59] P4 is a lot less serious than p3s they
[37:01] couldn't make the protection brooding
[37:03] and emotionally distant guy if anything
[37:05] they did the exact opposite enter you
[37:07] narakami so your dreams of naming the MC
[37:09] banging kawakami are unfortunately over
[37:11] yet again I'm aware that he has a
[37:13] different name in the manga but he
[37:14] appears to be the only protagon in the
[37:16] series that's consistently named and no
[37:18] one cares about the manga and if you
[37:19] thought the I don't care memes where it
[37:21] reaches for Makoto you are gonna despise
[37:23] the chat memes for narakami narakami is
[37:25] definitely the most unique at the
[37:27] Persona Pro attacks the dude is
[37:28] practically beaming with confidence and
[37:30] above all else narakami is a troll
[37:33] nearly every line that comes out of his
[37:35] mouth especially in the English dub
[37:36] provided by the legendary Johnny Young
[37:38] Bosch it's just him taking the absolute
[37:41] pants you suck mukoto in the first movie
[37:43] was written by the guy who chose I don't
[37:45] care for the first half of the game now
[37:46] rakami was risen by the guy who throws
[37:48] every hole dialogue option in Persona 4
[37:51] and it's glorious to watch
[37:56] oh dude oops wrong guy you see my coach
[38:00] doesn't care because he's apathetic you
[38:02] doesn't care because he's just too cool
[38:03] and he is aware of it and yes the chat
[38:05] memes definitely originated from the
[38:07] Kings game scene if there's any scene
[38:09] from this show that you've saw without
[38:10] being a Persona fan it's probably this
[38:12] one you is such a badass that literally
[38:14] robbed from a coach's Battle Theme just
[38:16] to unbutton his shirt and aim a precise
[38:18] Dart throw
[38:20] [Music]
[38:24] I've seen some grave robbing in my day
[38:27] but holy wow at the same time no while
[38:29] you was easily the funniest part of the
[38:31] show he's not strictly a gag character
[38:33] he does have an actual character Arc
[38:35] he's still a human being with real
[38:36] emotions p4a attempts into the idea of
[38:39] you being Reliant and having friends in
[38:40] his fear of being alone you doesn't have
[38:42] a character in Persona 4 at the start of
[38:44] the game we're told that he's
[38:45] transferring to a school in Ann Arbor
[38:47] because of his parents changing careers
[38:48] and was apparently pretty well liked at
[38:50] his original School due to how many
[38:51] students voice their disbelief for him
[38:53] moving in p4a on the other hand is
[38:55] completely different he moves to another
[38:57] but he doesn't seem to have this massive
[38:59] Social Circle or reputation that's
[39:00] implied in the game he's more alone and
[39:02] moving over to inappa ends up being more
[39:04] life-changing as a result finally being
[39:06] able to make friends and memories that
[39:07] will last a lifetime another interesting
[39:09] tidbit is that you as the only main
[39:10] character in Persona 4 that doesn't have
[39:12] a shadow in P4 all of the main
[39:14] characters confront their Shadow cells
[39:16] which are suppressing at the size of
[39:17] themselves that they don't want to see
[39:18] but taken to a massive extreme it's
[39:20] essentially their emotions going haywire
[39:22] but still having some truth to them so
[39:24] no kanji is not gay just because his
[39:26] shadow has uh vague themes of
[39:29] homosexuality it's just his emotions
[39:30] going haywire because of how much he
[39:32] suppresses the side of himself that
[39:33] enjoys activities that are traditionally
[39:35] viewed as feminine everyone has trouble
[39:37] accepting their Shadow which results in
[39:38] their boss fights and they learn to
[39:40] accept that part of himself after the
[39:41] boss is done manifesting their personas
[39:43] in the process you however does not have
[39:45] a shadow in Persona 4. he is seemingly
[39:47] chosen by izan now made the orchestrator
[39:49] of the game's events to be capable of
[39:50] within the power of the Wild Card which
[39:52] allows him to use multiple personas now
[39:54] to p4's credit narakami being perfect is
[39:57] not a story issue since he's just meant
[39:59] to be you the player but obviously this
[40:01] can't happen in Persona 4D animation
[40:02] because he's independent of your control
[40:04] so while he still receives his Persona
[40:06] at random by isanami's choice he
[40:07] eventually confronts his own shadow at
[40:09] the end of the adaptation a
[40:10] manifestation of its fear of being alone
[40:12] in his Reliance on his friends and this
[40:14] was so damn cool to watch and made him a
[40:16] lot more fleshed out his backstory and
[40:18] character Arc may not be as heavy as
[40:19] Makoto's but it doesn't need to be now
[40:21] it's not all fun and games foray well it
[40:24] is a lot lighter in tone and has a lot
[40:25] more comedy in the game it still deals
[40:27] with a murder mystery as its main plot
[40:29] while many moments don't have the same
[40:30] impact as they do in the game a lot of
[40:32] them are still very well done and hell
[40:34] some of the changes work a lot better
[40:35] God the scene with nanako at the
[40:37] hospital this was the first time a video
[40:39] game had maybe audibly SOB no matter how
[40:42] many times I replay this game nothing
[40:43] can prepare me for this moment
[40:45] specifically even when I know that
[40:46] Nautica comes at the other end
[40:47] eventually this moment between you and
[40:49] her as she slowly dies in front of you
[40:51] is emotionally devastating and I'm
[40:53] weirdly glad that the anime somehow made
[40:55] it even more tragic Johnny Young Bosch
[40:57] is one of my favorite voice actors and
[40:58] they manages to provide the dialogue
[41:00] that you never had in the original game
[41:01] without overdoing it there's clear
[41:03] desperation in narakami's voices
[41:05] nanako's life slowly but surely Slips
[41:07] Away in front of him it's heartbreaking
[41:09] and you know I didn't mind the original
[41:10] scene had music playing during it
[41:12] because the song itself is devastating
[41:14] in this context but removing all the
[41:16] sounds aside from the heartbeat monitor
[41:18] and use voice makes the dread of
[41:19] nanako's death even more impactful
[41:21] especially for people who have already
[41:23] played the game who are used to how the
[41:25] original scene plays out and holy [ __ ]
[41:27] the scene where the investigation team
[41:28] contemplates from namatami into the TV
[41:31] is fine enough in the game but since
[41:32] narakami is no longer a Flawless God in
[41:34] the anime this scene is elevated to a
[41:36] damn near Masterpiece
[41:41] what are you doing in narakami's one
[41:43] moment of weakness he breaks away from
[41:45] being the calm Wise Guy hero and drags
[41:47] us screaming narutami over to the TV of
[41:50] the intent to kill him showing no
[41:51] emotion in the process he truly believes
[41:54] that namatami was the one who killed
[41:55] nanako an acting on pure emotional
[41:57] instinct to avenge her stopping himself
[41:59] at the last second to defuse the
[42:01] situation it's even more terrifying if
[42:03] he played the game because you know that
[42:04] namatami is innocent you was mere
[42:06] moments away from ending an innocent
[42:08] man's life to Avenger's cousin and the
[42:10] scene afterwards of him crying in the
[42:11] snow clinging into yosuke for Comfort
[42:13] Jesus Christ for such a comedic
[42:16] adaptation they really know when to pull
[42:18] out the big guns for the darker moments
[42:19] of the story and it's brilliant they did
[42:21] a wonderful job at characterize and
[42:23] developing narakami and is easily my
[42:25] favorite Persona protag as a result
[42:27] unfortunately while there are many
[42:28] scenes that are made even more impactful
[42:30] in the anime there are also a few too
[42:31] many that aren't treated with as much
[42:33] respect sometimes the comedy can go
[42:35] overboard and it can turn a scenes such
[42:36] as I attempting to [ __ ] kill herself
[42:39] into a more laid-back and lighthearted
[42:41] scene p4a struggles with tonal
[42:43] consistency a fair bit and the pacing
[42:44] will light years ahead of the P3 movies
[42:46] but then again taking a height across
[42:48] the freaking Mojave Desert is better
[42:49] than this it's still rather flawed in a
[42:51] few areas Persona 4 isn't as long as
[42:53] Persona 3 usually clocking in around 70
[42:55] hours but that's still a very long game
[42:57] and while they definitely made the right
[42:58] call to translate it to TV they are
[43:00] always going to have problems with the
[43:02] story moving a tattoo fast or a dialogue
[43:04] being a lot more condensed than the
[43:05] original game's story and that makes
[43:07] sense of course not everyone has the
[43:09] patience to listen to adachi ramble like
[43:10] a psychopath for 15 minutes but without
[43:12] the dialogue feeling as uh big I guess
[43:15] compared to the anime it can leave some
[43:16] scenes feeling a little rushed if you've
[43:18] already played the game although I can't
[43:20] see it working for those who are
[43:21] discovering Persona 4 through the anime
[43:22] you know what's also rushed Social Links
[43:25] well technically one of my main issues
[43:27] with the percent of free movie is that
[43:28] they basically discarded one of the main
[43:29] things that made Persona unique and
[43:31] emotionally engaging outside of its main
[43:33] story and that's the Social Links Social
[43:34] Links are admittedly a bit of a game
[43:36] mechanic first and self-contained story
[43:38] next their main purpose in Persona 3 4
[43:40] and 5 is to increase the XP to a person
[43:42] it will gain when you fuse one of the
[43:43] corresponding Arcana which can help you
[43:45] learn very powerful skills can give you
[43:47] the advantage earlier on and stopping a
[43:49] lot of unnecessary grinding outside of
[43:50] your own health and SP increase while at
[43:52] the same time providing Side Stories for
[43:54] the characters you start your Social
[43:55] Links with where you mostly please them
[43:57] and be friendly with them for the first
[43:58] half but as the stakes tend to rise they
[44:00] usually appreciate the more grounded
[44:02] answers that they need as if Bond
[44:03] forever grows maxing at level 10 where
[44:05] you forge an unbreakable friendship with
[44:07] that person and is also where you can
[44:09] officially establish an intimate
[44:10] relationship if you decide to pursue one
[44:11] with a girl on a related note resay is
[44:14] overrated now with something like that
[44:15] they obviously can't include the
[44:17] gameplay benefits of the links since the
[44:18] anime is not a video game and when you
[44:20] take into account the Persona 4 has the
[44:21] largest amount of Social Links in the
[44:23] franchise it is 100 impossible for them
[44:25] to cram all of them into p4a with
[44:27] adequate depth but Persona is largely
[44:29] defined by its social Sim aspects and
[44:31] not including any Social Links at all is
[44:32] a bit of a letdown in that regard but
[44:34] thankfully unlike the P3 movies p4a does
[44:36] actually bother with the social link
[44:38] somewhere there are a few episodes and
[44:40] moments that are dedicated to specific
[44:42] links and to say the paste properly is
[44:44] up for debates but there's a good loss
[44:46] of them here and they make the calendar
[44:47] system from the game actually feel like
[44:49] it has a purpose in the anime managing
[44:51] to give you the balance between the
[44:52] social life and fighting in the TV world
[44:54] the past of time doesn't feel so
[44:56] trivialized like it does for p3's
[44:57] adaptation and I'm glad that they at
[44:59] least put in the effort to show some of
[45:00] the links here it's also funded for side
[45:03] plots showing other mechanics from the
[45:04] game that also take up time slots in
[45:06] your day like you going fishing
[45:07] part-time jobs stuff like that it's
[45:09] pretty neat now into the actual plot
[45:11] which remains largely unchanged from the
[45:13] video game aside from the obvious
[45:15] dialogue changes in the actual episode
[45:16] there are a few changes to certain
[45:18] events though and some are kind of neat
[45:20] like showing you tsunami first
[45:21] interacting with adachi but then there's
[45:22] stuff like giving Yukiko a pet bird just
[45:25] to make the visual metaphor of her being
[45:26] a bird trapped in the cage about to
[45:27] Sutter was the implied pain of being hit
[45:29] in the face and then there's holy
[45:31] original stuff like me detective nanako
[45:33] stuff narakami dressing up in Teddy's
[45:35] costume looking after kids and I'd go as
[45:37] far as to say that some of it can
[45:38] qualify as filler it's entertaining
[45:40] fellow but it's still filler and when
[45:41] you have to adapt 70 hours of gameplay
[45:43] in 26 episodes I don't think showing
[45:45] stuff like this is a good idea overall
[45:47] though it still follows the same story
[45:49] murder mystery that hangs over Innova
[45:51] people getting thrown into the TV by the
[45:52] suspected killer and it's up to the
[45:54] investigation team to save the ones
[45:55] being thrown in and solve the case
[45:56] Persona 4's story is a novelty that
[45:58] doesn't have the same punch on repeated
[46:00] playthroughs but if I could have raised
[46:01] my memories just to play this game blind
[46:03] again I would and the anime adapts the
[46:05] story well hell I go as far as to say
[46:07] the p4a instead of just my way of
[46:09] experiencing Persona 4's story if you're
[46:10] intimidated by the link for the game or
[46:12] just don't want to play it although I
[46:14] highly recommend you do because it's a
[46:15] much tighter more consistent experience
[46:17] again p4a feels a little rush towards
[46:19] the end of many of the plot twists not
[46:21] hitting nearly as hard to say did in the
[46:23] game I was surprised by how flat the
[46:25] adachi reveal was and I think if he got
[46:27] a bit more screen time it may have
[46:28] worked in the game he is always around
[46:30] every month for a bit of Chit Chat not
[46:32] disregarding his social link in Golden
[46:33] but the anime doesn't do him much
[46:35] Justice and I also added this Series has
[46:37] some fire openings and endings my
[46:39] personal favorite is the second op
[46:40] because it sounds a lot more grungy than
[46:42] the previous one but they're both
[46:43] visually great and musically sound I
[46:45] love the symbolism of the stack it's
[46:47] really cool and the endings while not
[46:49] offering a whole lot in terms of visuals
[46:51] have absolute bangers for their songs
[46:53] when it comes to the music in general
[46:54] though a lot of it is carried over from
[46:56] the games which is fair enough no pointy
[46:58] composing and recording a lot of new
[46:59] tracks if you already have perfectly
[47:01] good music available from your Source
[47:02] material but there are still plenty of
[47:04] original pieces here and they all sound
[47:06] good and fit the scenes they're featured
[47:07] in many of the songs here should have
[47:09] been in the game because they're
[47:10] honestly amazing just wanted to touch on
[47:12] that really quickly but this is a series
[47:13] I could genuinely recommend to people
[47:15] who have never played Persona before
[47:16] it's a genuinely great series not many
[47:19] video game adaptations manage to be as
[47:21] funny charming and as faithful their
[47:23] Source material while also offering new
[47:24] ideas to improve its already fantastic
[47:26] story or I'd still recommend playing the
[47:28] game first you can easily jump into p4a
[47:30] without having the knowledge of The
[47:31] Game's plot it's a very solid anime very
[47:34] funny and keeps Persona 4's incredible
[47:36] emotional beats while adding many of its
[47:37] own albeit a little off when it comes to
[47:39] pacing
[47:40] [Music]
[47:43] however despite Persona 4D animation
[47:45] being a great show worthy of the Praises
[47:47] accumulated throughout the years there
[47:49] is another person of four anime and just
[47:51] as I foreshadowed earlier A1 pictures
[47:53] was here to spoil the fun
[47:55] [Music]
[48:05] [Laughter]
[48:09] all right okay Persona 4 Golden is an
[48:12] enhanced re-release the Persona 4
[48:14] release exclusively for the PlayStation
[48:15] vs
[48:21] in 2012 it contained enhanced gameplay
[48:24] features extra story sequences a new and
[48:27] very bad dungeon changed some other
[48:28] miscellaneous things gave us a single
[48:30] best line of dialogue ever put in a
[48:32] video game I'm sorry teddy only people
[48:34] have human rights I did an epilogue for
[48:37] getting the true ending of the game and
[48:38] also changed the opening song to
[48:42] generally golden is viewed a lot more
[48:44] favorably compared to atlas's previous
[48:46] Persona re-release P3 FES which
[48:48] contained the answer and that's kind of
[48:50] self-explanatory but it did have a few
[48:52] changes that many thought blocked it
[48:54] down compared to the original PS2
[48:55] Release with the third semester
[48:56] specifically being appreciated for
[48:58] social and completion but also being
[49:00] kind of you know added on and while I've
[49:03] only played a bit of the original P4 on
[49:05] an emulator I can see why some of the
[49:06] changes annoyed people though I will not
[49:08] accept any slander of Shadow world thank
[49:10] you that song slaps and you know it get
[49:12] past the harmonica and you will see what
[49:13] I mean I saw an offense when they hear
[49:15] good music and you'd think with golden
[49:17] being released after the original
[49:18] Persona 4 anime there wouldn't really be
[49:20] a point of making another P4 adaptation
[49:22] well someone Atlas probably saw a
[49:25] decrease in their weekly salary of about
[49:26] 5 cents because Here Comes A1 pictures
[49:29] with Persona 4 the golden animation and
[49:31] it is extremely not very good nearly
[49:33] everything we've talked about so far has
[49:35] had merits and has been plenty enjoyable
[49:37] the only outlier I can think of is the
[49:39] third Persona free movie but everything
[49:40] so far has been solid genuinely great so
[49:43] it's a shame that I have to finally
[49:44] start getting pretty negative here now I
[49:46] realize I've been a little salty about
[49:48] A1 in this video so I'll just be like
[49:50] I'll just give some context finally A1
[49:52] and Atlas have been working together for
[49:54] a while on Persona they provided all the
[49:55] animated cutscenes four percent of four
[49:57] for example but wait why do the
[49:59] cutscenes not look bad here's the thing
[50:00] about A1 Pick just all right you gotta
[50:02] pay close attention to what products
[50:04] they're working on first or how was
[50:06] their priority in a current anime season
[50:08] and you also got to pay attention to
[50:09] who's working on the projects A1 has a
[50:12] bad reputation for often providing
[50:13] incredibly sloppy animation because they
[50:15] take on multiple projects at once and
[50:17] clearly dedicate most of their time and
[50:18] resources into a few this is why shows
[50:20] like Black Butler and kagiasama lovers
[50:22] war two of my favorite Productions from
[50:24] them have consistently clean animation
[50:26] because at the time of their production
[50:27] they really priority due to budget
[50:29] constraints this is also proven by the
[50:30] fact that at the very time golden
[50:32] animation was being animated A1 were
[50:34] working on three other shows for that
[50:36] specific season out of Noah zero Black
[50:38] Butler book of circus and the devil
[50:40] spawn commonly referred to as Sword Art
[50:41] Online now I haven't watched arthno at
[50:44] zero and you couldn't pay me in peanuts
[50:45] to watch Sora online again but from the
[50:47] clips I've seen the animation for both
[50:48] of those were consistently clean Black
[50:50] Butler book of circus is the only one of
[50:52] these shows I don't regret watching and
[50:53] I still think it's one of black Butler's
[50:55] best story arcs and that shows
[50:56] specifically looked great in terms of
[50:58] lighting Aesthetics and overall quality
[51:00] aside from some issue of detail from
[51:02] afar so you have A1 working on all these
[51:04] shows at once all of which looking
[51:05] pretty damn decent from an animation
[51:07] standpoint and then there's Persona 4
[51:09] the golden animation I won't dwell on it
[51:10] for too long but Christ the animation is
[51:13] terrible the first episode lures you in
[51:16] with some fun visuals but after that
[51:17] it's off model janky undetailed horrible
[51:20] looking slop it is a clear rush job from
[51:23] beginning to end the aesthetic is also
[51:25] way off look at the aesthetic of the
[51:26] original P4 anime and then look at
[51:28] Golden the colors are sickly bright and
[51:30] the shading doesn't support them making
[51:32] all of the coloring look flat and
[51:33] uninteresting unlike p4a which
[51:35] consistently looked pleasing and don't
[51:37] get me started on the number of still
[51:38] frames talking head scenes lack of
[51:40] detail also golden animation never got
[51:42] dubbed I don't know why maybe licensing
[51:45] maybe none of the va's gave a [ __ ] I
[51:47] don't know but we're still stuck with
[51:49] the Japanese cast this time and I admit
[51:50] I warmed up to some of them eventually
[51:52] but I still think p4's dub is King you
[51:54] may also realize that there's a new face
[51:55] here on the poster this is Marie and
[51:57] when she isn't being hated with every
[51:59] fiber Persona Twitter's being she's
[52:01] being hated by me [ __ ] Marie that's a
[52:04] little rude let me start over Marie was
[52:06] introduced in Golden as part of the
[52:07] extra story content and to say she's
[52:09] unpopular of most people is putting it
[52:10] lightly her frustrating personality
[52:12] along with her existence in the story as
[52:14] a whole is puzzling she was added as a
[52:16] way for the writers to explain where the
[52:17] mysterious Funk that covered Inova came
[52:19] from and which is you know something we
[52:21] really didn't need explained and her
[52:23] social link would honestly be a complete
[52:25] waste of time if it wasn't for the fact
[52:26] that Marie's surgery link is required
[52:28] for you to get the true ending of
[52:29] Persona 4 Golden that includes the
[52:31] epilogue her social link is not very
[52:33] substantial it's a compilation of her
[52:35] learning about the outside world due to
[52:36] suffering from heavy Amnesia and just
[52:38] getting along with the investigation
[52:39] team but was essentially a string of
[52:41] pure accidents on her pie and also
[52:43] consists of the game desperately trying
[52:45] to make her important by pointing you
[52:46] towards clues of where her Arc goes and
[52:48] ending with narakami telling her that
[52:49] she doesn't need to worry and be scared
[52:51] about her old memories so long as she's
[52:52] making new ones of her new friends which
[52:54] is sweet and all but after she remembers
[52:56] who she originally was and after a boss
[52:57] fight there is an absolute pushover her
[53:00] impact on the story is next to nothing
[53:01] she didn't need to be in Golden now what
[53:04] does the animation do to potentially
[53:05] alleviate this problem but how did every
[53:08] [ __ ] scene ever including the concert
[53:10] scene why not the entire point of this
[53:12] anime just seems to be fan service for
[53:14] people who'd wanted to see Marie get
[53:16] animated as well as some of the other
[53:17] golden exclusive events because the
[53:19] episodes don't exactly go in a
[53:21] recognizable structure golden animation
[53:22] is more like an anthology series that is
[53:24] specifically tailored for Die Hard fans
[53:26] who just wants an adaptation of golden
[53:28] like the series isn't completely devoid
[53:30] of Merit like there's an interesting
[53:31] theory that the reason why the plotting
[53:33] is so weird and why narakami seems
[53:35] strangely used to everything that's
[53:36] going on does it this series is supposed
[53:37] to be narakami going through New Game
[53:39] Plus which will not only explain why
[53:40] Izanagi gets away with all of this in
[53:42] the first episode but it also makes this
[53:44] next social stance that appear behind
[53:46] you and in the second opening make a lot
[53:47] more sense it's an interesting idea but
[53:49] translating it to a series does not work
[53:51] the pacing is it's about that good but
[53:54] you probably guessed that there's almost
[53:56] no new music here either and as of the
[53:58] original tracks I think there were the
[54:00] only one that stood out was the theme
[54:01] that plays during you and adachi's fight
[54:03] called yin yang which is essentially
[54:05] Lotus juice having a rap battle between
[54:06] himself with the two sides forming an
[54:08] arakami and adachi's outlooks
[54:10] respectively and it's a really cool song
[54:12] I kind of wish it was a dachi's battle
[54:13] theme in the game actually I will be
[54:14] modding it in for my next playthrough
[54:16] and as for the openings we don't talk
[54:17] about the first one the second one now
[54:19] that's a good opening the song next
[54:21] chance to move on is just so Persona 4.
[54:24] its chill it has this overwhelming sense
[54:25] of euphoria capturing the game's happy
[54:27] atmosphere and has some really cool
[54:28] looking visuals of the characters having
[54:30] thick outlines and their Shadows
[54:31] reflecting their personas I just wish
[54:33] they were using the better anime there
[54:35] were also some semi-interesting scenes I
[54:37] did like showing at sadachi's past but
[54:38] you really couldn't pay me to care
[54:40] because that was never important the
[54:41] golden animation is a tragic misfired I
[54:44] would only recommend to Die Hard fans if
[54:46] they really wanted to watch another
[54:47] Persona 4 anime I mean at least it
[54:49] shorts around 12 episodes if you don't
[54:51] count the OVA the OVA is titled thank
[54:53] you Mr accomplish and it's essentially
[54:55] an alternate timeline to the series that
[54:57] covers the chilling accomplice ending in
[54:58] Golden where you side with adachi in
[55:00] fact if there's anything you should
[55:01] watch from this anime it's probably this
[55:03] the animation is still garbage but it's
[55:05] intriguing to see this be animated
[55:06] however the game does it a lot better
[55:08] but why would you ever do that to
[55:10] yourself overall golden animation is
[55:12] very bad it's not good it's not just a
[55:14] bad animation it's not just the horrible
[55:16] pacing it's not just the fact that it's
[55:18] incredibly lazy to the point of reusing
[55:19] Shadow Worlds the song for its first
[55:21] opening but it doesn't do enough to
[55:23] justify its existence if you were gonna
[55:25] watch a P4 adaptation there's already a
[55:27] really good one you can watch and have a
[55:28] good time with even if you've played
[55:30] golden and not the original I don't see
[55:32] much of a reason to watch this series
[55:33] it's quite bad
[55:36] [Music]
[55:42] now for some of you this is probably the
[55:44] main reason you even clicked on this
[55:45] video because let's face it it's not a
[55:47] secret Persona 5 of the animation is a
[55:49] god-awful piece of [ __ ] and I want to
[55:51] hurt it now personally I think Persona 5
[55:53] and especially Persona 5 Royal is
[55:55] objectively the most well-designed game
[55:56] in the franchise from the gameplay
[55:58] perspective everything is beautifully
[55:59] streamlined stylish UI helps make combat
[56:02] and daily activities more engaging and
[56:03] Visually stimulating the amount of stuff
[56:05] you can do is insane and despite the
[56:07] game getting incredibly easy with how
[56:08] overpowered you could become before
[56:09] getting halfway through it Persona 5 is
[56:11] still a fantastic video game when it
[56:13] comes to storytelling though I think
[56:15] that's where issues arise now some wise
[56:17] wanks in the mega 10 and Persona
[56:18] communities have tried to arguing the
[56:20] Persona 5 as overall bad writing just
[56:22] because its story is not as good as
[56:23] previous games this happened with
[56:25] Persona 4 and it happened with Persona 3
[56:27] as far as you can tell from looking at
[56:28] whiny posts on game FAQs from 12 years
[56:30] ago and it will absolutely happen when
[56:32] Persona 6 releases a few years from now
[56:34] look Persona 5's got writing issues
[56:36] plenty of them but arguing that it's a
[56:38] terribly written game is far too
[56:39] disingenuous for me it has inconsistent
[56:41] bumps and quality throughout the
[56:43] adventure and I would only go as far as
[56:44] calling one story arc of the game truly
[56:46] questionable and you know exactly which
[56:48] one I'm talking about okay but overall I
[56:50] still think P5 tells a good story with
[56:52] powerful themes and despite the
[56:54] occasional Plotkin drivers that drives
[56:55] me up the damn wall I'd love the high
[56:57] concept story compared to the previous
[56:58] games I loved every single character
[57:00] except Morgana I think the game has many
[57:02] of the best Social Links sorry
[57:03] confidants in the series the game is
[57:05] still an emotional roller coaster and
[57:07] regardless of the inconsistency in story
[57:09] art quality it always remains gripping
[57:11] the most gripped I've been by a Persona
[57:12] story honestly it's not my favorite
[57:14] obviously but I appreciate Persona 5's
[57:16] story and I still overall loved it but
[57:18] one thing that even knows you have
[57:19] played Persona 5 are aware about is that
[57:21] the game is Mega Super Deluxe Ultra
[57:23] super incredibly long now P3 and P4 were
[57:26] already long games but they could still
[57:28] in theory be adapted into an anime
[57:30] without much trouble Persona 5 on the
[57:31] other hand not counting Royal since
[57:33] there's no anime for that thank God
[57:34] takes on average 100 hours to Simply
[57:37] finish the story not even counting extra
[57:41] side content and that's without 100 in
[57:44] the game and with a story there's a lot
[57:45] more Supernatural and high Concept in
[57:47] comparison to the Cozy and down to earth
[57:49] nature Persona 4 and the simple but
[57:50] effective nature percent free you can
[57:52] see where there may be some potential
[57:53] problems an enemy like this needs 4 4
[57:55] and planning as to how it will progress
[57:57] a decent budget and animation that
[57:58] consistently pull off visually
[57:59] interesting fight scenes instead of
[58:01] static RPG battles where characters just
[58:03] shoot colored energy each other as well
[58:04] as being able to replicate and smoothly
[58:06] integrate aspects of persona 5's
[58:07] gorgeous visual style and aesthetic into
[58:09] the animation it needs a lot more than
[58:11] 20 or so episodes since this is a 100
[58:13] hour video game would greatly benefit
[58:14] from a larger season and it also needs
[58:16] to balance live Sim day-to-day life and
[58:18] relationship building via conference and
[58:19] expressing their importance with the
[58:21] high stakes Adventures of defense and
[58:22] thieves and the metaverse and it also
[58:24] needs to give a sudden protagonist
[58:25] decent personality to differentiate
[58:27] himself from the blank safe version in
[58:28] the video game all of this stuff is
[58:30] basic anime stuff that even the basic
[58:31] adaptations have managed to get right
[58:33] now let's see how many of those they
[58:35] [ __ ] up
[58:37] [Applause]
[58:41] okay now take percent for the animation
[58:44] persona for the animation story while
[58:46] not having the greatest fight scenes or
[58:47] attempts at Social Link integration at
[58:49] least managed to retell it the story of
[58:50] the video game in a fun and interesting
[58:52] way but more specifically and
[58:53] alternative way making it accessible for
[58:55] newcomers who can't play the game and
[58:57] also appealing to those who have already
[58:58] beaten it Persona 5D animation is much
[59:00] akin to prisoner for the animation and
[59:02] it retells its story in an interesting
[59:04] way however it does that by sucking
[59:05] massive STD riddle Jesus where to begin
[59:08] okay the stock storytelling it tries
[59:11] really hard to follow the plots of the
[59:12] video game almost religiously there's no
[59:14] extra touches to make it unique no real
[59:16] like substantial additions it attempts
[59:18] to be a straightforward adaptation the
[59:20] cardinal sin of the Persona 3 movies but
[59:22] it somehow fails at doing that by being
[59:24] different to the game and how everything
[59:26] is paced and moves along Persona 5 is a
[59:28] game of massive pacing issues but not
[59:30] even the percent of free movies got to
[59:31] level of Watts that this series did it's
[59:34] like they set their sights on doing
[59:35] stuff tried to squeeze in some of the
[59:37] confidence into the story but screws
[59:38] them up cholesterol damage realizes they
[59:40] don't have enough time goes back to
[59:41] following the story skips through
[59:42] everything that may Persona 5 story and
[59:44] dialogue and character interactions
[59:45] interesting has never cracked with the
[59:46] confidence screws it up realizes they
[59:48] won't be able to include all of them so
[59:49] they pick a random selection of ones to
[59:51] go through still manages to shaft him
[59:52] goes back to the story do you need help
[59:54] you know people may rag on how long
[59:56] Persona 5 takes to establish its main
[59:57] plot and how stuff like the metaverse
[59:59] functions but at least it's competent
[1:00:01] Exposition and ties everything together
[1:00:02] without being confusing Exposition is a
[1:00:05] narrative tool for a reason not
[1:00:06] everything can be established with show
[1:00:07] don't tell p5d animation rushes through
[1:00:10] the story so badly that by the time they
[1:00:12] begin infiltrating Kar machines as
[1:00:13] Palace you have only the most basic
[1:00:15] explanation of what the Phantom thieves
[1:00:16] are doing and how it works like it's
[1:00:18] easy to understand what they're trying
[1:00:19] to accomplish and what's going on in
[1:00:21] general but the how and why are
[1:00:22] completely missing or are so poorly
[1:00:24] explained it makes keeping up with the
[1:00:26] story in utter chor and let's talk about
[1:00:28] confidence for a second because holy God
[1:00:30] if you focus on the force anime shafted
[1:00:32] them the way Persona 5's anime intends
[1:00:34] to interacting the story is messy at
[1:00:36] best a substantial number of characters
[1:00:38] are reduced the background characters
[1:00:39] some characters get some scenes with the
[1:00:41] protagonist but nothing really
[1:00:42] substantial and the character arcs of
[1:00:44] defensive fuse themselves are developed
[1:00:45] in the most superficial level imaginable
[1:00:47] they are casted deep into the shadow of
[1:00:49] the vastly superior Source material I
[1:00:51] think most Persona 5 fans will look
[1:00:53] great at Makoto's Confidant was one of
[1:00:54] the least satisfying gripping in the
[1:00:56] game it was okay but it largely focused
[1:00:58] on you and Makoto saving her new friend
[1:01:00] from being boost to work for an illegal
[1:01:02] business it doesn't focus enough on
[1:01:03] Makoto as the character now for the
[1:01:05] anime adaptation this is a perfect
[1:01:06] chance to take creative liberties with
[1:01:08] the source material and potentially
[1:01:09] improve on it taking the brief moments
[1:01:11] received a much more interesting family
[1:01:13] situation Makoto has with her sister and
[1:01:15] the death of her father however p5a
[1:01:16] doesn't change anything from the
[1:01:18] original story unless you count the fact
[1:01:19] it does everything a hundred times worse
[1:01:21] so we get the exact same boring
[1:01:23] confident storyline now made worse due
[1:01:25] to the pacing and unsubstantial dialogue
[1:01:27] this Rings true for every Phantom FIFA
[1:01:29] show tries to develop ryuji on yusuke
[1:01:32] Makoto Futaba Haru all get their arcs
[1:01:34] remade but we'll shoot their dialogue
[1:01:36] and pacing so all the stories themselves
[1:01:38] might be great like use game for Thomas
[1:01:40] conference which are some of the best in
[1:01:41] the game they are done basically zero
[1:01:43] Justice confidants outside the Phantom
[1:01:45] thieves that are acknowledging the anime
[1:01:46] are passable at best like Mishima and
[1:01:48] kawakami but are just jaw-droppingly bad
[1:01:51] at worst hifumi is best girl fight me
[1:01:53] yes while on a purely subjective level
[1:01:55] flushing out some confidence from
[1:01:56] outside the Phantom thieves as a step up
[1:01:58] from p4a on an objective level p5a
[1:02:00] butchers so many of these arcs to
[1:02:02] straight up ignores some of the best
[1:02:03] ones so much and so often that I would
[1:02:05] have honestly preferred if they stuck to
[1:02:06] trying to tell the main story and even
[1:02:08] if they did do that they would not have
[1:02:10] enough time a two-core anime season is
[1:02:12] simply not enough for a game of their
[1:02:14] scope it is filled with emotional
[1:02:15] informatics substance with a colossal
[1:02:17] story spanning over a hundred hours this
[1:02:20] needed two seasons at a minimum what
[1:02:22] doesn't help the b-tech retelling of the
[1:02:24] game's story and its confident plot is
[1:02:26] that they are backed up by a shockingly
[1:02:27] boring protagonist if there's one thing
[1:02:29] I can very easily commend about the
[1:02:30] adaptations for P3 and P4 is that they
[1:02:33] took the silent protagonists of their
[1:02:34] respective games and expanded upon head
[1:02:36] cannons based on the game's dialogue
[1:02:37] choices while still giving them their
[1:02:39] own individual personalities and
[1:02:40] character development so the reason why
[1:02:42] narakami is even considered the best
[1:02:44] Persona protag by most people is because
[1:02:46] of how much Justice the anime gives him
[1:02:47] the anime was the blueprint for use
[1:02:49] characterization which has remained
[1:02:51] consistent over the Persona 4 spin-off
[1:02:53] games like P4 Arena and dancing all
[1:02:54] nights even Makoto who can't even appear
[1:02:57] in future games due to the consequences
[1:02:58] of being dead was done so much justice
[1:03:01] as an emotionally compelling character
[1:03:03] overcoming its apathy and depression in
[1:03:04] the movies and is arguably the one thing
[1:03:06] each movie consistently nailed the
[1:03:08] animes for both of these games had
[1:03:09] nothing to work with aside from vague
[1:03:11] dialogue options to build a character
[1:03:12] from and came out on top of Two fleshed
[1:03:15] Out characters that work within the
[1:03:16] game's story now we come to Persona 5's
[1:03:18] protagonist Joker if there's one
[1:03:20] character you know from Persona if
[1:03:21] you're an outsider it's probably Joker
[1:03:23] he's the face of Persona 5 he was the
[1:03:25] Persona rep in Smash Bros he's on every
[1:03:27] piece of promotional artwork looking or
[1:03:29] Sly and smug and enjoying himself I gave
[1:03:31] him credit he has more lines of dialogue
[1:03:33] than any of the pro tanks in the video
[1:03:34] games Makoto and Yu never spoke outside
[1:03:36] of battle when even then it was mostly
[1:03:38] grown
[1:03:41] actually talks and makes brief comments
[1:03:44] on stuff outside of battle there is a
[1:03:46] clear difference between his soft-spoken
[1:03:48] timid side in the real world and is more
[1:03:50] enthusiastic lines when exploring the
[1:03:51] metaverse that right there gives you
[1:03:53] more foundations than the previous two
[1:03:54] pro tanks and that's not even
[1:03:56] considering his dialogue options where a
[1:03:57] large number of them came off as defiant
[1:03:59] sort of sassy you know he's a quiet kid
[1:04:01] who holds resentment for the society
[1:04:03] that's wronged him and he enjoys being a
[1:04:04] phantom Thief you see more of an
[1:04:06] innocent smile on him when he's not in
[1:04:08] the metaverse but when he Dawns the
[1:04:09] masking clothes he's a phantom Thief
[1:04:12] this is mainly my head Cannon dudes a
[1:04:15] theater kid he loves the theatrics and
[1:04:16] getting back at Society while keeping to
[1:04:18] himself in the real world even if you
[1:04:19] don't agree with that head Cannon I
[1:04:21] think all of us can agree that it's a
[1:04:22] country mile better than how Joker is
[1:04:24] handled in the anime enter Ren Ami Maya
[1:04:27] so your dreams of naming him banging
[1:04:28] kawakami are again dismissed but at
[1:04:30] least in this game you can in fact bang
[1:04:32] kawakami wanna know why I've only been
[1:04:34] calling him Joker by his code name
[1:04:36] because no one I repeat no one can can
[1:04:39] decide what this kid's actual name is
[1:04:40] it's more divisive than the debate
[1:04:42] between Minato and Makoto honestly and
[1:04:44] it's largely because Joker's manga name
[1:04:46] Akira karusu sounds a lot cooler and
[1:04:48] stands out a lot more to some people
[1:04:49] obviously not for everyone people still
[1:04:51] call him Ren but personally I swap
[1:04:53] between the two when I feel like it for
[1:04:54] the time being though I will simply be
[1:04:56] calling him Joker given Joker's a lot
[1:04:58] more to work with when creating an
[1:04:59] independent character with actual
[1:05:00] thoughts and feelings divorced from the
[1:05:02] players it really saddens me to say that
[1:05:04] joker is bafflingly uninteresting in the
[1:05:06] anime just to be clear I am trying to
[1:05:08] judge all these adaptations without the
[1:05:10] dots in mind first p4a is still really
[1:05:12] funny without the dub even though the
[1:05:13] dove does greatly enhance the experience
[1:05:15] mp5a's dub is something I'm going to
[1:05:17] talk about in a sec for now though
[1:05:18] judging pivave slowly through watching
[1:05:20] it subbed I was absolutely bored to
[1:05:23] Tears by Joker's characterization his
[1:05:25] dialogue his impact on the story
[1:05:26] everything despite talking the most out
[1:05:28] of all the protags in the games Joker
[1:05:30] somehow speaks less than Makoto does in
[1:05:32] the anime and when he does open his
[1:05:34] mouth about a quarter of it is over him
[1:05:35] grunting saying a singular word or
[1:05:37] stealing a line from Eugene the times
[1:05:39] where he's speaking four sentences he
[1:05:41] just doesn't say anything interesting he
[1:05:43] barely has any impact on conversations
[1:05:45] there's no real difference between this
[1:05:47] behavior in reality and the metaverse
[1:05:49] his voice acting is good but it doesn't
[1:05:50] save a fundamentally boring character
[1:05:52] the protagonist of an anime series
[1:05:54] barely talks and when he does it amounts
[1:05:57] to nothing I cannot begin to describe
[1:05:58] how much this hurts this already wounded
[1:06:00] puppy of an adaptation Joker has a
[1:06:02] reason to be subtle in the games his
[1:06:04] personality is decided by your dialogue
[1:06:06] choices and he gets plenty of them
[1:06:07] firmly establishing that he does have at
[1:06:09] least some input on what's happening I'm
[1:06:11] fine with Joker being a quiet kid in
[1:06:13] fact that's a great bit of
[1:06:14] characterization for him but there's
[1:06:15] nothing else to the guy at all he
[1:06:17] doesn't get a smidge of noticeable
[1:06:18] character growth scenes in the game
[1:06:20] where he actually has plenty of dialogue
[1:06:21] choices to provide the illusion of
[1:06:23] audible input are neutered in the anime
[1:06:25] and it's like he doesn't talk at all he
[1:06:26] has no compelling Arc no notable
[1:06:28] character traits he's more of a blank
[1:06:30] slate than the blank slates all he does
[1:06:32] is fill the role of the protagonist and
[1:06:34] leader of the Phantom thieves simply by
[1:06:35] virtue of building multiple personas he
[1:06:37] is the same character from the moment he
[1:06:39] arrives in Shibuya to the moment he puts
[1:06:41] a cap in God's brain this reeks of a
[1:06:43] script that tries too hard to be
[1:06:45] faithful to a story or he has no hope of
[1:06:47] adapting properly taking the aspects of
[1:06:49] it that require gameplay in order to
[1:06:50] work and retroactively ruining them
[1:06:52] Joker is such a disappointment in this
[1:06:54] series and I have to seek his suspicion
[1:06:55] not a fact just a sneaking suspicion
[1:06:57] that it's because this interpretation of
[1:06:59] his character received mixed reviews
[1:07:00] when compared to narakami Joko remains a
[1:07:02] mute character in Persona 5 Strikers
[1:07:04] like what reason was there for Joker to
[1:07:06] remain a mutant Strikers exactly
[1:07:08] narukami is out here speaking four
[1:07:10] sentences in multiple spin-off games and
[1:07:11] Joker's still stuck with the dialogue
[1:07:13] choices although I will admit the
[1:07:15] dialogue choices in Strikers get so
[1:07:16] consistent sometimes that it's sort of
[1:07:18] clear what character they want Joker to
[1:07:20] be what dude shut up alright I'm getting
[1:07:22] sidetracked you want to know what's
[1:07:23] funny all of this butchering of the
[1:07:25] story and the characters because of the
[1:07:27] rushing of the series and they still
[1:07:28] need an innovate to wrap things up
[1:07:30] that's right p5a's last episode is
[1:07:32] literally just a catchy killing Joker
[1:07:34] and then it ends I didn't see the other
[1:07:37] two episodes before that so I I found it
[1:07:39] pretty funny there are two hour long
[1:07:41] ovas going over to Shido Arc and the
[1:07:44] finale of Persona 5 respectively are
[1:07:46] they any better uh no all of the same
[1:07:49] problems as the anime just with a much
[1:07:50] longer run time and a massive Reliance
[1:07:52] on CGI like holy hell a lot of CGI I
[1:07:55] tend to find CGI complaints in anime
[1:07:57] rather Petty especially when it looks
[1:07:59] perfectly fine but there's honestly no
[1:08:00] excuse here this stuff just looks bad
[1:08:02] the only thing good about these is the
[1:08:04] scene where Morgana returns after
[1:08:06] supposedly dying is executed better in
[1:08:08] the anime and throws more natural in the
[1:08:09] game but if I only get to praise one
[1:08:11] scene for the show in comparison to its
[1:08:13] source material I'm a funny guy all
[1:08:16] right now let's talk about the dub if
[1:08:18] you ever feel like watching the show
[1:08:19] don't then go and pick the dub this is a
[1:08:22] very strong recommendation this whole
[1:08:23] time I've been talking about p5a as it
[1:08:25] stands from watching the subbed version
[1:08:26] however while the show is still a
[1:08:28] dumpster fire well dubbed p5a's English
[1:08:30] voice actors must have gotten told or
[1:08:31] something because they managed to make
[1:08:32] the anime rather entertaining at times
[1:08:34] Persona 5 easily has the best English
[1:08:36] dub cast in the series hands down the
[1:08:38] voice acting is really good in both
[1:08:40] English and Japanese yet the English dub
[1:08:42] feels like an Abridged Series at times
[1:08:44] and usually I'd say this hurts a dub
[1:08:46] more than it enhances like yes the
[1:08:48] narrator from Lover's war is funny but
[1:08:49] it's really distracting but when you
[1:08:51] have an anime like p5a that gets so
[1:08:53] achingly boring a little silliness can
[1:08:55] go a long way
[1:08:58] especially from xandermobos as Joker
[1:09:00] Joker may be an uninteresting character
[1:09:02] in The subbed version but damn it Xander
[1:09:04] managed to deliver his lines with really
[1:09:06] good comedic timing and sounded like he
[1:09:07] was actually having a lot of fun
[1:09:11] [Music]
[1:09:14] show me your true form
[1:09:18] get it together dude
[1:09:22] my bad joker sounds like he has a
[1:09:26] personality even if his actual character
[1:09:27] writing leaves a lot to be desired his
[1:09:29] voice is soothing of a hint of dorkiness
[1:09:31] that makes him easier to like welcome
[1:09:33] hey
[1:09:35] are you old enough hey uh in his voice
[1:09:39] in the metaverse is powerful and
[1:09:40] commanding of your attention
[1:09:45] because the issues with Joker as a
[1:09:47] character but the dub does Joker so much
[1:09:49] Justice all the dab actors managed to
[1:09:51] make the dialogue more engaging actually
[1:09:52] there are several new scenes in p5a
[1:09:54] between Joker and a catchy establishing
[1:09:56] that they have more of a friendship and
[1:09:57] playful rifle even shown in the game
[1:09:59] while discussing their ideals they give
[1:10:01] this show some honest to God credit this
[1:10:03] is good Joker and a catchy's
[1:10:05] relationship was dramatically
[1:10:06] underdeveloped in vanilla Persona 5 a
[1:10:08] Persona 5 Royal finally giving a catch
[1:10:10] in all new Confidant that blows the
[1:10:11] original game out the water the anime
[1:10:13] scenes were simply a Band-Aid fixed for
[1:10:15] this issue before Royal came out but
[1:10:16] they're all greats and the conversations
[1:10:18] between a catchy and Joker and the dub
[1:10:20] sound natural and interesting largely
[1:10:21] because Robbie Damon and Xander Mobis
[1:10:23] have a lot of underutilized chemistry
[1:10:25] together and we get to see glimpses of
[1:10:27] that here I just wish Joker talked more
[1:10:28] man and I mean at least the dub doesn't
[1:10:30] bore me to tears and can produce a
[1:10:32] decent chuckle from me just like p4a I
[1:10:34] recommend watching the dub on this one
[1:10:36] no hated the Japanese voice actors at
[1:10:37] all they're really good but The Abridged
[1:10:39] take on some of the scenes and dialogue
[1:10:41] for the dark match to make a shooting
[1:10:42] adaptation slightly less painful right
[1:10:44] what else is there oh yeah the animation
[1:10:47] you know the main thing people tend to
[1:10:49] dunk on about this show yeah it's no
[1:10:50] secret by now that Persona 5 the
[1:10:52] animation is one ugly looking anime now
[1:10:55] there are a few misconceptions about who
[1:10:56] actually made this anime many people
[1:10:58] just say it's A1 pictures and writes it
[1:11:00] offices never failing by them and what
[1:11:02] they technically aren't wrong this show
[1:11:03] is actually animated by none other than
[1:11:05] cloverworks thing is at the time
[1:11:07] cloverworks was still a subsidiary of A1
[1:11:09] had not split off yet so while it is
[1:11:11] true that A1 was involved with the
[1:11:12] show's production and potentially are
[1:11:14] responsible for the state of its
[1:11:15] animation since they take on a lot of
[1:11:16] projects at once and seemingly just
[1:11:18] handy clever works the key is told them
[1:11:19] to have it ready by 2018. I did want to
[1:11:21] point it out that this wasn't exactly a
[1:11:23] high priority show for A1 now today most
[1:11:25] of you known cloverworks for their
[1:11:27] really good animation in plenty of
[1:11:28] critically acclaimed anime like Wonder
[1:11:30] egg priority my dress up darling and
[1:11:32] most recently spy X family they are a
[1:11:34] very talented and capable studio so it
[1:11:36] really does beg the question of why this
[1:11:38] Show's animation turned out so bad A1
[1:11:41] this work does not look professional
[1:11:42] this is something I'd expect a freelance
[1:11:44] animator on YouTube to propose Pilots
[1:11:46] the artwork is low quality lacking
[1:11:48] detail even when really close and when
[1:11:50] it's far away where you'd expect there
[1:11:52] to be less detail it just looks like a
[1:11:53] child Druid that's not even mentioning
[1:11:55] the actual animation which is stiff
[1:11:57] janky all the action scenes in the show
[1:11:59] look over extremely Janko just
[1:12:01] consistently personas hurling colored
[1:12:02] energy towards each other there's no
[1:12:04] impressive fight choreography none of
[1:12:06] the colors pop and the show looks
[1:12:07] incredibly washed out there's no even
[1:12:09] spectacle it just looks bad I'm
[1:12:11] struggling to decide whether this or the
[1:12:13] golden animation look worse I've never
[1:12:14] watched an anime where characters go off
[1:12:16] model this consistently and all attempts
[1:12:18] at making the action look cinematic full
[1:12:20] flat
[1:12:21] combine this with the awful CGI in the
[1:12:24] ovas and you ever showed it honestly
[1:12:25] hurts to look at you know what's most
[1:12:27] embarrassing about this well there
[1:12:29] aren't many of them the anime cutscenes
[1:12:30] in Persona 5 the game look a bajillion
[1:12:33] times better than the anime like they
[1:12:35] aren't even that technically impressive
[1:12:37] but they're competently composed there's
[1:12:38] good lighting consistent character
[1:12:40] models with great detail it looks
[1:12:41] acceptable an anime at the very least
[1:12:43] should make its animation look on par or
[1:12:46] better than a video game cutscene
[1:12:48] Persona 4 managed that the anime blows
[1:12:50] The Originals animation out the water
[1:12:51] granted percent of 4 came out in 2008
[1:12:53] but there's not that much of a Time gap
[1:12:55] between it and its anime p4a still looks
[1:12:57] mild special than p5a which released
[1:12:59] seven years after and I don't really
[1:13:01] want to hear that the show was rushed
[1:13:03] because yeah no [ __ ] the animation is
[1:13:05] still really bad and not only does this
[1:13:07] look bad it also just doesn't look like
[1:13:09] Persona 5. you've got the characters
[1:13:10] here you have the phone aesthetic
[1:13:12] there's an attempt an all-out attack
[1:13:15] what the [ __ ] am I looking at but
[1:13:17] overall the anime looks Bland the colors
[1:13:20] are the saturated every scene outside
[1:13:21] looks extremely muggy and also where is
[1:13:24] the style the most highly discussed and
[1:13:27] widely recognized thing about Persona 5
[1:13:28] is its impeccable visual style and
[1:13:30] aesthetic the game is personality
[1:13:32] incarnate the Punky rebellious manga
[1:13:35] scrapbook whatever you want to call this
[1:13:36] style it's easily the most memorable
[1:13:38] part of the game's art Direction I'm not
[1:13:40] saying to animate the show primarily in
[1:13:41] red black and white but nothing about
[1:13:43] p5a's animation screams Persona 5 to me
[1:13:46] at the very least incorporate the visual
[1:13:47] style into the action scenes actually
[1:13:49] that already exists ladies and gentlemen
[1:13:51] I give you percent of five the
[1:13:53] daybreakers this was a promotional
[1:13:54] animation for the release of Persona 5
[1:13:56] that was animated by none other than A1
[1:13:58] pictures not cleverworks or any Studio
[1:14:00] they just dumped this project onto Atlas
[1:14:02] pay to have a promotional 24 minute ov8
[1:14:04] promote the release of Persona 5 in
[1:14:06] Japan and I think it's a shame most
[1:14:08] people don't know or care that this
[1:14:09] exists because oh my God not only are
[1:14:13] the character models consistent with
[1:14:14] good detail but the colors just look
[1:14:16] much brighter this could be a cut scene
[1:14:18] from the game and I honestly wouldn't
[1:14:19] notice and that's not even the best part
[1:14:21] when the thieves Venture into mementos
[1:14:22] we get an absolutely spectacular action
[1:14:25] sequence there's some gorgeous animation
[1:14:27] fluid and snappy movements eye-popping
[1:14:29] colors and they even throw in the visual
[1:14:31] aesthetic of Persona 5 into the fight
[1:14:33] scenes they appropriately managed to
[1:14:35] stylize their action scenes to make it
[1:14:36] look like something from Persona 5. also
[1:14:38] while it's not much Joker feels a lot
[1:14:40] less restrained here and you can easily
[1:14:42] tell the difference between how he is in
[1:14:43] reality and how he enjoys being a
[1:14:45] phantom Thief this is an an extremely
[1:14:47] high quality OVA that has literally none
[1:14:49] of the issues the anime has and it's
[1:14:51] literally a [ __ ] commercial it
[1:14:53] astounds me that A1 poured their heart
[1:14:55] and soul into this OVA yet then we get
[1:14:57] Persona 5 the animation I'm not
[1:14:58] expecting this level of quality per
[1:15:00] episode I think that's slightly
[1:15:01] unreasonable but just having consistent
[1:15:03] animation would have worked wonders not
[1:15:05] to mention this OVA is an expansion of a
[1:15:07] Memento side quest in the actual game
[1:15:09] giving it more of a story while having
[1:15:10] it take place realistically during the
[1:15:12] main plot of persona 5. now imagine this
[1:15:14] p5a isn't a one-to-one attempt at
[1:15:17] retelling the game's story and is
[1:15:18] instead a series of memento's missions
[1:15:20] from the game that are more fleshed out
[1:15:22] letting us get to know the characters
[1:15:23] involved their struggles desires and
[1:15:25] then having the plot focus on solving
[1:15:27] that while p5's main plot progresses in
[1:15:28] the background hell it doesn't even have
[1:15:30] to be missions from the game and can be
[1:15:32] entirely new ones that we don't see
[1:15:33] represented it would be formulaic
[1:15:35] knowing each episode would end in a big
[1:15:36] fight but I could have seen this working
[1:15:38] wonders and it would have honestly been
[1:15:39] a neat companion based on the main game
[1:15:41] perfect for fans while not entirely
[1:15:43] ruining the story or spoiling anything
[1:15:44] substantial for newcomer actually
[1:15:46] something of that sort already exists
[1:15:48] Persona 5 mementos missions is literally
[1:15:50] an original manga about this exact
[1:15:52] concept it's not technically Canon but
[1:15:54] compared to the P5 enemy as well as the
[1:15:56] manga adaptation of P5 it's honestly a
[1:15:58] lot of fun I was surprised at how much I
[1:16:00] enjoyed it since it doesn't really take
[1:16:01] itself that seriously and it's just a
[1:16:03] fun piece of spin-off content just make
[1:16:05] an adaptation of that alas I can only
[1:16:07] dream there's only a few more things to
[1:16:09] cover here so I'll go over the openings
[1:16:11] the running joke about discussing the
[1:16:12] show is that all the budget just went
[1:16:14] into the openings and honestly I do see
[1:16:16] that opening one captures p5's visual
[1:16:18] style and has some really nice symbolism
[1:16:19] some really cool shots and the song
[1:16:21] Break in the breakout is a pretty good
[1:16:23] song and if it's the story rather well
[1:16:25] Dark Sun on the other hand oh God I'm
[1:16:28] gonna get my heart changed for saying
[1:16:29] this but I really don't Vibe with the
[1:16:31] song that much it is really good when
[1:16:33] you get to the drop-off dark son
[1:16:35] wherever you shine I see but I find it
[1:16:39] pretty bland leading up to that what's
[1:16:41] not helping other visuals all the fans
[1:16:43] of foods at the start distractingly
[1:16:45] undetailed but second half of this
[1:16:46] opening is some straight garbage what
[1:16:49] the heck is this what does this mean why
[1:16:51] is ryuji naked Anna Makoto are dating I
[1:16:53] guess good for them Yo futaba's freaking
[1:16:54] bowling holy [ __ ] these visuals are
[1:16:56] utter nonsense they have absolutely
[1:16:58] nothing to do with the main plot or the
[1:17:00] characters except maybe Morgana but even
[1:17:03] then they're so comically dark and out
[1:17:05] of place this is not a good opening the
[1:17:07] ending themes are a lot better I like
[1:17:08] these a lot the music well most of it is
[1:17:10] just taken for B5 soundtrack and that
[1:17:12] needs no introduction whether you're a
[1:17:13] fan of the series or not you have 100
[1:17:15] heard this soundtrack using a YouTube
[1:17:17] video at some point it's really good the
[1:17:19] original music that is here isn't too
[1:17:21] bad either well that was a very long
[1:17:22] rant so overall Persona 5 the animation
[1:17:25] is a textbook example of a garbage video
[1:17:27] game anime and there are quite a few but
[1:17:29] the others are usually garbage for being
[1:17:31] too different this one is garbage for
[1:17:32] being too similar because the story
[1:17:34] doesn't work as an anime that's this
[1:17:36] short maybe if they were given two
[1:17:37] seasons but it's a video game anime of
[1:17:40] course they weren't getting that as much
[1:17:41] as the golden animation sucked it at
[1:17:43] least had some entertainment value from
[1:17:45] seeing the people forecasters interact
[1:17:47] with each other p5a is a joyless cash
[1:17:49] grabbing adaptation to honestly either
[1:17:50] deserves better or shouldn't have been
[1:17:52] made in the first place if you've
[1:17:53] watched this anime and haven't bothered
[1:17:54] playing Persona 5 you are actively
[1:17:56] making your life worse my guy just play
[1:17:58] Persona 5 better yeah play Persona 5
[1:18:00] Royal the re-release it has new content
[1:18:02] and ending since one of the best games
[1:18:03] I've ever played it's coming to steam
[1:18:05] Xbox and Nintendo switch on October 21st
[1:18:07] this year so pick it up when you can you
[1:18:08] are doing yourself a disservice by
[1:18:10] letting this piece of garbage serve as a
[1:18:12] substitute for Persona 5's narrative
[1:18:14] just play the game and stay far away
[1:18:16] from the show if you aren't curious it's
[1:18:18] a waste of time
[1:18:21] all right well that's all the
[1:18:23] adaptations out of the way I feel like
[1:18:25] something's missing though
[1:18:28] okay since this is an anime of the
[1:18:30] Persona name though it's not an
[1:18:31] adaptation I'll give it a brief look
[1:18:36] oh
[1:18:38] yeah
[1:18:41] [Music]
[1:18:47] ah yes Persona Trinity Soul just a
[1:18:50] question for all my Persona one and two
[1:18:51] fans out there what's it like to feel
[1:18:53] neglected because I'm telling you guys
[1:18:55] just because Atlas doesn't make games
[1:18:56] for you anymore doesn't mean they act
[1:18:58] like you literally don't exist Trinity
[1:19:00] soul is an anomaly of sorts this is less
[1:19:02] of a black sheep and more of a lost than
[1:19:04] forgotten cat I can count a number of
[1:19:06] people who I know who have watched this
[1:19:07] show on one hand Me Trinity soul is not
[1:19:11] an adaptation of any of the games it is
[1:19:13] in fact an original series taking place
[1:19:14] 10 years after the events of Persona 3
[1:19:17] and was supposedly Canon at some point
[1:19:18] until Persona 4 arrived a few years
[1:19:20] later saw the idea of adults not being
[1:19:22] able to use personas said LOL no and
[1:19:24] created adachi then feeling unsatisfied
[1:19:26] Persona 4 Arena arrived a few years
[1:19:28] later and promptly passed all over its
[1:19:30] grave now it's just a non-canon
[1:19:31] alternate universe set 10 years after
[1:19:33] Persona 3 though you'd probably forget
[1:19:35] that when watching it because Persona 3
[1:19:37] isn't really a required viewing or
[1:19:39] playing to watch this although it does
[1:19:41] help when akihiko just sort of pops up
[1:19:43] for a few minutes that was a thing that
[1:19:45] happened you know it's kind of hard to
[1:19:46] dig into what exactly Trends your soul
[1:19:48] is what it's trying to be because in all
[1:19:50] honesty I don't really know it feels
[1:19:52] like after the breakout success of
[1:19:54] Persona 3 Atlas just didn't really know
[1:19:56] what to do of that success so they tried
[1:19:57] creating something akin to the social
[1:19:59] set of Persona 3 of the noir-esque style
[1:20:01] Persona 2. if that sounds like Persona 5
[1:20:03] to you then yeah basically but Trinity
[1:20:05] Soul was evidently a testing ground for
[1:20:07] that kind of concept the big critique
[1:20:09] that often gets levied against this
[1:20:10] anime is that it's incredibly slow like
[1:20:12] this is the slow burniest of slow Burns
[1:20:14] but it unfortunately doesn't really
[1:20:16] excite you a whole lot of what happens
[1:20:17] at the end of that Slow Burn there are
[1:20:19] long stretches of time in the show where
[1:20:21] nothing happens the atmosphere is
[1:20:23] incredibly dry and it's somewhat
[1:20:25] refreshing for a Persona property but
[1:20:27] the execution doesn't fare too well
[1:20:28] there is sort of a Serene calmness with
[1:20:30] the show's atmosphere and pacing though
[1:20:32] it's different and can often be
[1:20:34] unbearable but it's hard to knock the
[1:20:35] chill Vibe they wanted to go for many of
[1:20:37] these scenes the story revolves around
[1:20:39] Shin an official protagonist in The
[1:20:40] Persona 3 Canon that Atlas wants you to
[1:20:42] forget ever existed and the show filled
[1:20:44] to Convention of the Persona formula a
[1:20:46] kid transfers to a new town new school
[1:20:48] has to live there for a while before
[1:20:50] eventually getting tackled up in
[1:20:51] Supernatural nonsense although Shin
[1:20:53] doesn't really get a Velvet Room Igor
[1:20:55] just shows up to him in person it's like
[1:20:57] they realize this guy wouldn't amount to
[1:20:58] much but Shin isn't alone here as he
[1:21:01] transfers with his younger brother June
[1:21:03] the stare of his older brother Rio with
[1:21:04] Brotherhood being a main theme of the
[1:21:06] series so just like any modern Persona
[1:21:08] gamer has a starting formula but it's
[1:21:10] what it does with that formula that
[1:21:11] makes each game unique whether that's
[1:21:13] the specifics of the plots the themes
[1:21:14] that are covered or and the Dynamics
[1:21:16] between the characters Shin's in the
[1:21:18] right protagonist is nothing to write
[1:21:19] home about but he still puts him above
[1:21:21] sub version of Ren in my book as The
[1:21:23] Show Goes On you'll learn more about the
[1:21:24] bond between these three their family
[1:21:26] what their parents did because as his
[1:21:28] customary of most stories like this the
[1:21:29] parents are to blame and you get the
[1:21:31] sense that they all do care about each
[1:21:33] other they're not bad characters they're
[1:21:34] just nothing really special Rio is cold
[1:21:37] almost his brothers to stay out of his
[1:21:38] work and out of Harm's Way frustratingly
[1:21:40] even after they awaited their Persona
[1:21:42] which is just but he's fleshed out just
[1:21:45] enough for you to believe that okay this
[1:21:47] is an actual person that's probably the
[1:21:49] best summary for the Trinity Soul cast
[1:21:50] they're Simply Good Enough they're
[1:21:52] possible Shin's classmates consist of
[1:21:54] megumi takuru and kanuru out of the
[1:21:56] three megumi is easily my favorite and
[1:21:58] is definitely the best character in the
[1:22:00] show although there's not a whole lot of
[1:22:01] competition she's one of the few
[1:22:03] characters that feels like she could
[1:22:04] have been in a Mainline Persona game
[1:22:06] she's peppy extroverted in a generally
[1:22:08] likable character but of course has to
[1:22:09] have a track as a backstory when in a
[1:22:11] car accident as a child her Persona
[1:22:13] protected her and her parents but wasn't
[1:22:14] able to protect her brother as a result
[1:22:16] she hates herself and personas in
[1:22:18] general but the former sentiment is held
[1:22:20] very much by her mother who admits to
[1:22:21] her from a young age that she loved her
[1:22:23] son more than her and wished it was
[1:22:24] megumi who had died Instead This trauma
[1:22:26] and bitter divide between the two Lisa
[1:22:28] megumi getting a one-off episode
[1:22:29] dedicating to men that Bond her mother
[1:22:31] realizing that magumi had protected all
[1:22:33] of them that day and feeling sorry for
[1:22:34] what she had done it's a moment of
[1:22:36] actual Brilliance and it feels
[1:22:38] incredibly out of place with the rest of
[1:22:39] the anime it's sort of powerful actually
[1:22:41] if there's one episode that deserves to
[1:22:43] be watched here it's undoubtedly this
[1:22:44] one it feels like it belongs in a
[1:22:46] Persona game this is a genuinely well
[1:22:48] written and impactful storyline that
[1:22:50] single-handedly turns a likable but
[1:22:51] bland archetype of the extroverted girl
[1:22:53] character into the best character in the
[1:22:55] entire anime it is legitimately not even
[1:22:57] close Sakura is fine enough but it's
[1:22:59] clearly another attempt at the comic
[1:23:01] relief best friend character and that
[1:23:02] doesn't really go a long way when
[1:23:04] nothing funny ever happens instead
[1:23:06] takura was largely carried by his
[1:23:07] one-off episode except unlike megumi
[1:23:09] it's simply not as impactful basically
[1:23:11] due to confusing plot stuff and an event
[1:23:13] that happened 10 years ago his father's
[1:23:15] mind was swapped with this woman causing
[1:23:16] takura to be abandoned by his father at
[1:23:18] a young age with no knowledge of where
[1:23:19] he went or what even happened this woman
[1:23:21] is takaro's Father only in anime ladies
[1:23:24] and gentlemen and it's a fine episode
[1:23:26] nothing much else it's sweet very weird
[1:23:28] but sweet then there's kanuru and here
[1:23:31] it becomes evident that they'd maybe
[1:23:32] just you know just maybe borrowed a few
[1:23:35] ideas from Persona 3 kanaru as a robot
[1:23:37] in the love interest of shin who dies in
[1:23:38] Shin's arms Makoto is rolling in his
[1:23:40] door grave obviously there's the
[1:23:42] difference that I guess wasn't the one
[1:23:43] who died it was Makoto but this is still
[1:23:45] a very on the nose inspiration I'd
[1:23:47] hardly call it inspiration honestly it's
[1:23:49] just straight up theft speaking of
[1:23:51] Persona 3 here comes the blue Peter
[1:23:53] versions what were already Bargain Bin
[1:23:54] antagonists the maribito are a joke
[1:23:56] they're not even a funny joke I can't
[1:23:58] even make fun of how laughable they are
[1:24:00] because I just feel bad they mean
[1:24:01] absolutely nothing in the grand scheme
[1:24:03] of things outside of this chick who I
[1:24:05] forgot the name of because she was the
[1:24:06] only one allowed to actually have an
[1:24:08] input on the main plot back to kanaroo I
[1:24:10] mean hell even comparing her to I guess
[1:24:12] is doing I guess a disservice because
[1:24:13] kanuru isn't all that interesting her
[1:24:15] backstory kind of is but she's as Bland
[1:24:18] as a piece of Yukiko I mean cardboard
[1:24:20] otherwise she's addicted to something
[1:24:21] called Shadow extraction oh right I
[1:24:23] haven't really mentioned details about
[1:24:24] the main plot have I sorry if this
[1:24:26] section is disjointed but Trinity Soul
[1:24:28] really did bore me to tears it's not
[1:24:30] even a bad anime but it's just not that
[1:24:32] interesting and it's honestly really
[1:24:33] forgettable I'm only including it here
[1:24:35] because I know there'd be some [ __ ]
[1:24:37] Troublemaker smt fan who'd chew me out
[1:24:39] for neglecting it in a video about
[1:24:40] Persona anime back on track the main
[1:24:42] plot revolves around something called
[1:24:43] Persona extraction basically a number of
[1:24:46] corpses are turning up with their skin
[1:24:47] removed which is definitely a 2000s
[1:24:49] Atlas idea it's wonderfully dark and it
[1:24:51] involves the you guessed it extraction
[1:24:53] of one's Persona this is the case that
[1:24:55] Shin's brother Rio was working on and he
[1:24:57] knows the person who is behind it a
[1:24:59] neurologist named kaisuke a man obsessed
[1:25:01] with Reviving his dead daughter ayane
[1:25:03] for the use of personas there's also
[1:25:05] another process called Shadow extraction
[1:25:07] where instead of stripping a person of
[1:25:08] their Persona they're stripped off a
[1:25:10] part of their Shadow which gives them a
[1:25:11] great sense of euphoria this is a
[1:25:13] legitimately cool idea too bad it's not
[1:25:15] explored in the way that does it much
[1:25:16] Justice you see Shadow extraction is
[1:25:18] instead uses a massive allegory for
[1:25:20] anything the series wants to make a big
[1:25:22] statement about whether that's drunk
[1:25:24] driving drugs or unprotected Scaro is
[1:25:27] addicted to Shadow extraction and is
[1:25:28] placed into the majority of the show's
[1:25:30] social scenes because it's not a [ __ ]
[1:25:32] Persona media without at least one
[1:25:34] moment of contradicting your own themes
[1:25:35] she's a naive reserved girl and is
[1:25:37] honestly a character I don't like she's
[1:25:39] not very interesting outside of her
[1:25:41] backstory and before she gets the chance
[1:25:42] to be worth appreciating she's already
[1:25:44] dead the reason why I've been going over
[1:25:46] the characters first and I've left the
[1:25:47] story on the back burner is because
[1:25:48] Trinity soul is a very character in
[1:25:50] conversation based series there's not
[1:25:52] much action here and the action scenes
[1:25:54] that are available are short and crappy
[1:25:55] and I don't mind that if it has some
[1:25:57] sort of flare or personality but so many
[1:25:59] of these scenes are just boring
[1:26:01] Exposition or just moments where nothing
[1:26:02] happens you can appreciate the calm of
[1:26:05] Trinity soul but not when there's little
[1:26:07] to nothing happening as a result it's
[1:26:08] just easier to talk about the characters
[1:26:10] in any actual plot points because this
[1:26:12] show still finds a way to make things
[1:26:13] super convoluted towards the end it's a
[1:26:16] weird series and I can see why Atlas
[1:26:18] treats it as if it doesn't exist it's
[1:26:19] not even getting into the stuff
[1:26:20] pertaining to adults using personas
[1:26:22] Trinity soul establishes that adults
[1:26:24] cannot use their personas and the ones
[1:26:26] that can have to take special drugs that
[1:26:28] allow them to use them effectively but
[1:26:30] not taking them will result in their
[1:26:31] Persona going berserk and attacking
[1:26:33] others or the user this is basically an
[1:26:35] expanded concept of the pills from
[1:26:36] Persona 3 that we use this helps
[1:26:38] suppress a violent Persona in Persona
[1:26:40] users who couldn't summon their personas
[1:26:41] naturally which applied to Shinji as
[1:26:43] well as every member of Strega this is a
[1:26:45] really neat concept and it's Unique to
[1:26:47] this series explaining why Rio can use
[1:26:48] his Persona at age 28 however this
[1:26:52] concept was completely thrown out the
[1:26:53] window of Persona 4 with its spin-offs
[1:26:55] not treating Trinity Soul as a Canon
[1:26:57] sequel to Persona 3 and if you want to
[1:26:58] go even further back this concept
[1:27:00] completely contradicts Persona 2 where
[1:27:02] personas could be summoned by adults and
[1:27:03] if you want to get even more specifics
[1:27:05] and kichi from Persona 5 Strikers is the
[1:27:07] first Persona user in a long ass time
[1:27:09] who awakened their Persona as an adult
[1:27:11] basically it's easy to see why this
[1:27:13] concept didn't last outside of this
[1:27:15] series and why this series is ultimately
[1:27:16] not considered Canon as previously
[1:27:18] mentioned akihika from Persona 3 shows
[1:27:20] up in this series but he's the only real
[1:27:22] connection between Trinity soul and
[1:27:24] Persona 3 if he didn't show up you could
[1:27:26] show this anime to a lot of people and
[1:27:27] they wouldn't even be able to tell you
[1:27:28] that it was a Persona 3 sequel as for
[1:27:30] Aki himself he does nothing like
[1:27:33] literally nothing he shows up for a few
[1:27:35] episodes but he doesn't discuss C's or
[1:27:37] any of his friends the Dark Hour
[1:27:38] Tartarus next personas he doesn't even
[1:27:40] act as a mentor as a fool with guidance
[1:27:42] he just shows up without being able to
[1:27:44] use his personal in adulthood and does
[1:27:46] nothing beyond that it's just really
[1:27:48] lame taking one of p3's best characters
[1:27:50] and doing nothing with him I'll take
[1:27:52] Arena zakihiko over this any day at
[1:27:54] least he has a personality you know
[1:27:55] despite being flanderized into a walking
[1:27:57] protein advertisement all in all true
[1:27:59] soul is not a bad anime it's not
[1:28:01] offensively awful or anything and there
[1:28:04] are things here that I like and Concepts
[1:28:05] that have a lot of potential that I
[1:28:06] think should be recycled for future
[1:28:08] Persona projects but you can't help but
[1:28:10] feel indifferent to the series it's a
[1:28:12] perfectly fine slowly paced anime that
[1:28:14] borrows elements from persona but
[1:28:16] weirdly doesn't feel like much of a
[1:28:18] Persona series your enjoyment will
[1:28:20] largely stem from the pacing I have a
[1:28:21] lot of tolerance for slow pacing Steins
[1:28:24] Gate is my favorite show of all time and
[1:28:25] it's infinite for having its first half
[1:28:27] being incredibly slow but stuff actually
[1:28:29] happens in Steins Gates it all serves a
[1:28:31] purpose Trinity Soul half the time feels
[1:28:33] like dead air a failed experiment for
[1:28:35] Atlas to try and capitalize on percent
[1:28:37] of free success without knowing how fun
[1:28:39] fact this was actually one of the first
[1:28:40] anime A1 pictures ever worked on and for
[1:28:42] one of their first projects it doesn't
[1:28:43] look too bad for an anime released in
[1:28:45] 2008 characters are on modeled the
[1:28:47] artwork is clean and actually looks like
[1:28:49] an adult through it it's the animation
[1:28:50] that has its issues with plenty of
[1:28:52] talking head scenes and underwhelming
[1:28:54] action the show isn't stiff it just
[1:28:55] doesn't have much going on overall I had
[1:28:58] to include Trinity Soul because it
[1:28:59] counts as a Persona anime Canon or not
[1:29:02] it's a fine series that I don't really
[1:29:03] recommend but I don't suggest you avoid
[1:29:05] it like the plague either
[1:29:11] holy wow after 10 months of working on
[1:29:14] the script on and off and it's finally
[1:29:16] done Jesus Christ Persona will forever
[1:29:18] be a series I hold close these games
[1:29:20] were having their share of writing
[1:29:21] problems are all about their characters
[1:29:23] telling interesting stories with
[1:29:25] powerful themes and populating them with
[1:29:26] these believable lovable people that you
[1:29:28] grow emotionally attached to all brought
[1:29:30] together by its marriage of these
[1:29:31] elements with its dungeon crawling RPG
[1:29:33] gameplay that remains fun and engaging a
[1:29:35] Persona anime will never be a perfect
[1:29:37] way to experience these stories there's
[1:29:39] so much content and substance held in
[1:29:41] these games that you have to be in a
[1:29:42] very fortunate position with episode
[1:29:44] orders to even cover half of it
[1:29:45] extremely well but as we've seen
[1:29:47] throughout the course of this video the
[1:29:48] best adaptations are the ones that know
[1:29:50] their limits and respectfully expand
[1:29:51] upon the story of The Originals with
[1:29:53] their own ideas acting as faithful but
[1:29:55] well-made companion pieces that in some
[1:29:57] areas even surpass elements of the games
[1:29:59] Persona 3's movies had brief glimmers of
[1:30:01] being something far greater before
[1:30:02] eventually coming into its own with an
[1:30:04] emotionally powerful conclusion Persona
[1:30:06] 4's anime took what it could reasonably
[1:30:07] adapt and did so accordingly with minor
[1:30:09] hiccups while injecting its own sense of
[1:30:11] humor and incredible interpretation of
[1:30:13] the game's protagonists into the mix if
[1:30:15] Persona 6 ever gets an anime which it
[1:30:17] most likely will or if they decide to
[1:30:18] give P5 Royal its own anime akin to
[1:30:20] Golden I hope they take their time of
[1:30:22] crafting away in which to adapt the main
[1:30:24] story and the social elements that they
[1:30:25] can but to also not limit themselves by
[1:30:27] trying to effectively retell everything
[1:30:29] stay faithful to the source material but
[1:30:31] use the anime as a way to explore more
[1:30:33] unique Concepts or different
[1:30:34] interpretations so long as I don't end
[1:30:36] up conflicting with important parts of
[1:30:38] the game or if by some miracle they're
[1:30:39] given more than 24 episodes use that
[1:30:41] time effectively no filler no [ __ ]
[1:30:44] if adaptations of these games have to be
[1:30:46] made they should at least be unique
[1:30:47] companion piece that doesn't fly in the
[1:30:49] face of what made the game so great p4ga
[1:30:51] and p5a suffer the most from being
[1:30:54] incredibly rushed and handling
[1:30:55] everything poorly and I'd very much like
[1:30:57] for that to be avoided in general I
[1:30:58] prefer these games not be adapted at all
[1:31:00] I spoke too soon Sega please stop but if
[1:31:04] they have to be made make them like p4a
[1:31:06] winter rebirth Etc either way if you
[1:31:08] haven't played the games yet and are
[1:31:10] aware that I just spoiled them all
[1:31:11] rotten I'd still recommend picking them
[1:31:12] up and experiencing them for yourself
[1:31:14] these are all fantastic top shelf RPGs
[1:31:16] and I'm glad they're finally becoming
[1:31:18] more accessible after all this time
[1:31:19] alright now it's time for the ranking
[1:31:21] this shouldn't take too long so let's
[1:31:22] have a look
[1:31:24] at the bottom of the list we've got
[1:31:26] Persona 5 the animation Persona 5 is a
[1:31:28] game packed with so much content and
[1:31:29] story depth that a single season anime
[1:31:31] adaptation was frantically doomed from
[1:31:33] the start and the schizophrenic way
[1:31:34] handled confidence character development
[1:31:36] and the main story didn't help
[1:31:37] especially with how ugly it looks
[1:31:39] beating it out by a small margin we've
[1:31:40] got Persona 4 the golden animation
[1:31:42] golden aims to do something different by
[1:31:44] being an anthology series which is
[1:31:45] commendable but an execution doesn't end
[1:31:47] up working and comes off as very
[1:31:49] disjointed and doesn't justify its
[1:31:51] existence harmed by its incredibly poor
[1:31:53] visuals and animation beating out by a
[1:31:55] considerable margin but still not being
[1:31:56] viewed too favorably in my eyes we've
[1:31:58] got percent of Freedom Movie Falling
[1:32:00] Down despite boasting gorgeous artwork
[1:32:02] and satisfactory animation along with a
[1:32:03] fantastic new soundtrack falling down
[1:32:05] suffers greatly from throwing percent of
[1:32:07] prehistorian characters out the window
[1:32:08] and doing them a horrible disservice
[1:32:10] just to try and put Makoto and ryoji in
[1:32:12] the spotlight up Nexus Persona Trinity
[1:32:14] Soul Trinity soul is a literal
[1:32:16] definition of a 5 out of 10 anime it
[1:32:18] gets the job done none of it's faltered
[1:32:20] that detrimental but it generally does
[1:32:21] nothing special outside of some very
[1:32:23] rare standout moments and it's slow
[1:32:25] pacing makes it a slog to watch through
[1:32:26] Persona 3 the movie spring of birth this
[1:32:28] is a perfectly enjoyable well animated
[1:32:30] adaptation of persona 3's first 20 hours
[1:32:32] and does a lot of things right including
[1:32:34] some stuff that works better than the
[1:32:36] originals unfortunately It suffers from
[1:32:38] being too much of a straightforward
[1:32:39] adaptation at times which leads to poor
[1:32:41] pacing and a complete absence of Social
[1:32:42] Links despite keeping the game's
[1:32:44] calendar system makes it feel more like
[1:32:45] a highlight reel of events in a cohesive
[1:32:47] narrative Persona 3 the movie Midsummer
[1:32:49] Night's Dream despite the first half
[1:32:51] being bogged down by some issues that
[1:32:52] plague the first movie the film's second
[1:32:54] half is so unfathomably good in
[1:32:56] comparison that makes the weight worth
[1:32:58] it being a legitimate Improvement on the
[1:33:00] game's story in nearly every aspect with
[1:33:02] very few hiccups Persona 4 the animation
[1:33:04] the crown jewel of anime adaptations of
[1:33:07] video games p4a is a hilarious and
[1:33:09] genuinely great way to experience
[1:33:10] Persona 4 even if you're an outsider to
[1:33:12] the series and containing a plethora of
[1:33:14] interesting and emotionally satisfying
[1:33:15] creative decisions to help it stand out
[1:33:17] balancing the game's story and has
[1:33:19] decided to be different near flawlessly
[1:33:20] despite the shafting of Social Links and
[1:33:22] finally at the very tipty top we have
[1:33:24] percent of Freedom movie winter of
[1:33:26] rebirth despite not being the easiest to
[1:33:28] get into as an outsider is to say
[1:33:30] visually stunning emotionally gratifying
[1:33:32] and damn near perfect adaptation of
[1:33:33] persona 3's final story arc finally
[1:33:35] managing to set itself apart from the
[1:33:37] anime as a new experience while
[1:33:38] Faithfully adapting the story capturing
[1:33:40] and in many ways improving the feeling
[1:33:42] of dread and heartbreak the eighth
[1:33:43] percent of Bree's conclusion so
[1:33:45] impactful I'll be honest I thought a lot
[1:33:47] of these would be worse when going into
[1:33:48] them some of them are certified stinkers
[1:33:50] for sure but I was surprised with just
[1:33:51] how much potential was buried under
[1:33:53] somebody's perfectly adequate shows and
[1:33:54] movies and was pleasantly surprised with
[1:33:56] how some of them finally unlocked that
[1:33:58] potential and became something genuinely
[1:33:59] great when it comes to video game
[1:34:01] adaptations you can certainly do a lot
[1:34:03] worse than Persona I'd say I'm satisfied
[1:34:05] on that note thank you all for watching
[1:34:06] I've been working on this video for far
[1:34:08] too long and I'm finally happy to be
[1:34:09] done and dusted so I will wrap things up
[1:34:11] with a request go stick your Studios
[1:34:13] with low priority projects on a low
[1:34:15] budget don't skimp past important
[1:34:16] emotional scenes and to Atlas
[1:34:18] specifically stop overpricing your
[1:34:21] [ __ ] games
