Why You Shouldn't Buy This Great EV
45sThe contradiction of praising a car while advising against buying it creates curiosity and debate.
▶ Play ClipThe Kia EV5 is a well-rounded electric SUV with impressive features, but it faces stiff competition from its smaller sibling, the EV3, which offers better efficiency and value. Despite its strengths, the EV5's higher price and lower range make it a less compelling choice.
The Kia EV5 is a good car but not recommended over the EV3 due to similar pricing and better efficiency of the EV3.
The GT Line S trim includes remote control parking via key fob, allowing the car to move forward or backward without a driver.
The boot has a mains power output for devices like Starlink. The front passenger seat has a relaxation mode.
A hidden drawer in the center console and a fingerprint sensor for driver profiles and starting the car.
When indicating, a camera shows the blind spot on the instrument cluster.
0-60 mph in 7.88 seconds, similar to the EV3 despite more weight (2.1 tons vs 1.9 tons).
60-0 mph braking distance of 37 meters, worse than the EV3's 34 meters.
Claimed range 313 miles, but real-world test yielded 204 miles (2.5 mi/kWh). EV3 has better efficiency and longer range.
Boxy, rugged design with stylish lights. Similar to EV6 but larger. Wheel sizes: 18-19 inches depending on trim.
Ample knee and head room, reclining seats, large seat base. Middle seat is firm, shoulder room tight compared to Tesla Model Y.
Easy ISOFIX access, fits bulky rear-facing seat. Rear seat features include USB ports, grab handles, and cup holders.
Adequate pickup at highway speeds, low wind and road noise, comfortable seats. Family-friendly.
Hard plastics on dash and door tops, dark interior. Infotainment system is functional but sometimes unresponsive. Physical controls for climate are good.
Heads-up display, heated/cooled/massaging seats, large sunroof. Ample storage including under-dash, wireless charging, and door bins.
Surprisingly agile for a heavy car, with good grip and steering feel. Front-wheel drive causes understeer when accelerating out of corners.
Suspension soaks up bumps well, with minimal impact from potholes. Comfortable over rough roads.
Price range £39,000-£47,000. Leasing is more expensive than buying due to high depreciation. Recommends buying outright.
Suggests considering a used EV9 for similar price. Recommends using Carwow's history check for used cars.
Easy to drive in town with good visibility and smooth acceleration. Turning circle is worse than competitors, making U-turns difficult.
Struggles with tight turns; requires multiple maneuvers. 360-degree camera only on top spec.
No rear camera washer, climate info blocked by steering wheel, rear windows don't go fully down, pop-out door handles awkward, overly sensitive driver attention warning.
7-year warranty. Boot capacity 566 liters, smaller than Skoda Enyaq. Hands-free tailgate optional. Boot lip low, but flat load floor.
Fits 7 suitcases (vs 9 in Tesla Model Y). Rear seats fold flat for more space.
EV5 is £3,000 more than EV3, offers more space but less efficiency. Recommends EV3 for better value unless more space is needed.
The Kia EV5 is a great car with many features, but its higher price and lower efficiency compared to the EV3 make it a less sensible buy. Unless you need the extra space, the EV3 offers better value.

10:38Final Recommendation
Summarizes the core argument: EV3 offers better value than EV5.
18:09[00:02] really good car. However, even though it's not that much more expensive in the real world after Carwow discount than the EV3, I wouldn't choose it over its the EV3, I wouldn't choose it over its smaller brother. And I'll explain why.
[00:18] which means you have a remote control parking. So, you can of a parking space. Look, there's no one in it, you can see. Or you can drive it backwards into a parking space that would be too hard for you to get out of
[00:32] physically. I wonder if I can climb in through the window while it's moving.
[00:45] but yes, you can. You have a proper mains power output. Look here in the boot. So, you can plug in your Starlink internet. It's the only place called Oxfordshire. Do you live in
[00:59] It's bloody nightmare, isn't it? The front passenger gets a relaxation seat, which you activate by pressing this button here.
[01:17] There's a secret drawer you can keep all your contraband. Look. your contraband. Look. It's in here. This is a fingerprint sensor. So, what you can do, you get into the car, put
[01:31] you are, and it sets the car with your specific profile. You can even start the car by pressing it. Good day. You can also get it with blind spot camera. So, going on in your blind spot. Look, there's James just standing there doing
[01:43] nothing. Classic. If I do the one to the right, we can see my ass. Lovely. Speaking of which, what's this car like at hauling ass? Otherwise, this car could be deathly slow. It's got got electric motor driving the front wheels.
[01:57] It's got 217 horsepower, yet this thing weighs 2.1 tons. Let's find out. Is it weighs 2.1 tons. Let's find out. Is it going to be too slow to buy? 3 2 1
[02:10] go. Oh, it's picking up now though. What's the 0 to 60? We have 7.88. Fine. In fact, it's as fast as these cars which I considered fast, but when I were hard Thing is, well that was
[02:26] impressive. This car's baby brother, the EV3, which has slightly less horsepower, EV3, which has slightly less horsepower, 204, did 0 to 60 this quick. So, the quicker. That's because it's a lighter car, 1.9 tons as opposed to 2.1 tons.
[02:39] So, how will that extra weight affect the EV5's braking performance? because this is a family car, you need it to be safe. Needs to be able to stop from 60 in around 34 m. Let's test it. Coming into the braking zone right now.
[02:59] Was it any good? Ooh, 37 m. Not brilliant. But there's another area where this car isn't brilliant. Just like the EV3, the EV5 has an 81 kWh battery. And on this GT-Line car, that should give you a range of 313 mi.
[03:12] Whereas, if you match spec for spec, the EV3 will give you over 360 mi, according to Kia. But what's my reality? I've only averaged 2.5 mi per kWh. When you capacity, that gives me a real-world range of just 204 mi, which is terrible.
[03:29] I normally drive, which is quite spirited. I'm sure if I was more when I did a range test on the EV3, I got 88% of that car's claimed range. But not going to be as efficient or be able to go as far. It's got bigger tires,
[03:45] it's heavier, and it's got more drag because of the more boxy shape. But I like this boxy buddy. I think this is a look-back car cuz every time I've driven it, I've turned back to look at it. The lights in particular have plenty of
[03:57] style. And from the side, it's like the Kia EV6, it's like boxy, rugged, entry-level car, you have a slightly different design for the lower front panel here, but to tell you the truth, it's much of a muchness apart from the
[04:11] wheel sizes, which are 19s on the GT and GT Line S and just 18 on the entry-level look the same. It's very Tonka toy. And at the back, same thing continues. Cool light design. It's good-looking. But then, so too is the EV3. This is just
[04:27] bigger, and that does have its benefits. It is so roomy here in the back seats. Look, loads of knee room, lots of head room, and I can do this. And recline a lot. Let me put this one back as well. See? And the seat base is huge. You got
[04:40] lots of under-thigh support, lots of foot space. I'm raving about the space in the back, but what's it like with three in the back at once? Let's do it. actually. Um, how you doing?
[04:55] >> But the rest of it's all good. I think the shoulder room for three in the back isn't it? If you want to see my in-depth video review of that, then just click over Lewis's face or scan the QR code, which is now James's face.
[05:09] Well, I can't fault those when it comes to fitting a baby seat. The ISOFIX there's loads of room back here. And the doors open wide, so it's dead easy to fit a big, bulky rear-facing seat. Feature-wise, we have USBs there, look,
[05:22] in the seatbacks. A weird grab handle on what the driver My daughter would so do that. And you have decent-size door bins. You have cup holder, which is exposed, which is a bit
[05:35] annoying, but you do have a little bit of through-loading. Look, hello. Don't know why I went in that stupid voice. Um, I'm supposed to be an adult. Also, So, have posh airplane-style folders. I don't know what they're posh.
[05:48] sucky pockets. So, this car is comfy to sit in, but is it comfy to travel distance in? Let's find out. The pickup is adequate. So, here's 40 mph. Put my 60. So, that's fine for overtaking at high
[06:04] speed. And when you are cruising along, hardly any wind noise, hardly any road noise. Seats are comfy, too. I actually really, really like this car as a daily. miles, then I'd get a diesel. And I'll tell you what else, my family like it,
[06:18] my daughter likes it, and my missus likes it. And that is high praise indeed anything is pretty tough for me. Now, that's probably going to get me into of this car is a little bit disappointing in some areas. So, what
[06:32] you have soft-touch materials here on the dash, and the door tops, it's hard plastic, which is bizarre for a car this price. Also, it's all rather gray. little bit of lightness to lift it a bit. The entry-level car doesn't,
[06:46] infotainment system, which is quite dark. The infotainment system itself is fine, though I do find sometimes I'm pressing a button and accidentally like, "Why has it just changed menu and done all this stuff when I didn't mean
[06:59] physical buttons for the climate control. Hell yeah, we like that. That is good stuff. The digital driver's display is just as dark, but you can cycle easily through different views and menus. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Plus, you
[07:13] have a heads-up display there. This being the range-topping, we've got loads of kit such as heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats, and massaging seats, plus large opening sunroof.
[07:25] Let's let some of these blooming flies out. There's some bitey flies here. I'll shut that so they don't come back in. want the blind shut. Why did you do that? Go away.
[07:39] the controls that you touch do feel quite nicely damped and I like the fact that the drive control and the on-off switch are here in the same place. It's good. So too is in-car storage. Look, we've got storage under here. Look,
[07:52] that otherwise there'll be hell to pay. And we have wireless charging here and you got two cup holders with Look, grippers. And then down here there's even more storage. I like these takeaway holders so you can just hang your
[08:05] takeaway bag off there so it doesn't roll about and your Chinese spill out all over the floor. You have the manual in this case. I say nice things about the car. That doesn't happen. But it's not, it's
[08:18] But you got two USB ports down there and an old-fashioned 12-V socket. And then adjustment in the seat, there's plenty of it and look, you got big sun visors,
[08:30] And there's plenty of adjustment in the steering wheel. Look. I've accidentally just activated the wipers. Oh, no, it's the rain sensing better crack on with this, Miguel. Stop dawdling. We need to see how this car
[08:45] handles and I want to test it in the dry. This Kia EV6 is a little bit like that friend you had at school who was He was fat, but somehow they used to be able to run rings around you on the football field. You see, it feels like a
[08:59] soft squishy car, yet somehow when you chuck it at some bends, it just grips and goes round. It's surprising. Look, here we go. Wee! And we go. Oh, no, just hold on. And you know what assists that feeling? The steering. While it is
[09:13] light, it just puts the car exactly where you want it to go. It gives you so much confidence. They've done a good job on this. It surprises you. A Kia You know, a Kia family-friendly SUV, what's that all about? I'm not
[09:27] complaining, it's good. Whoop. You can just catch up with other cars through the bends. Then you get told off for getting too close. To be fair, that is a Jerry, so it's not like chasing
[09:40] down a Porsche. I mean, my only complaint about the handling is this one your foot down out of a bend, sometimes you get a little bit of wheel slip at the front axle. Other than that, I mean, why is this fun to drive? Shouldn't be.
[09:54] What's also good, the suspension. So, it does have a bit of a jiggle to it and a bit of this and a bit of that, but it's actually really, really nice. So, you go over a bump and it does that thing that expensive suspension does. It makes a
[10:07] I'm going to illustrate it now by specifically finding a pothole and too hard because our roads are terrible. There we go. Hear that noise? Here we go.
[10:20] just a dip dip. And I hardly felt it. enough example. I'm going to find a proper deep, evil one which would me, Kia. There we go. Oh, that was a beauty, but
[10:35] no problem for the Kia. The Kia EV5 starts from 39,000 lb rising to 47 grand for this range topper, but through Carwow, you can save an average of 4,000 lb off one. Now, I've actually configured my ideal version of the EV5.
[10:49] If you want to find out what it is and the saving through Carwow, click on the screen, or follow the link in the description of this video. Now, you car, but I wouldn't recommend it for now because it's way more expensive to lease
[11:03] suffer the depreciation. Here's the numbers. This range topper will cost you whereas you'd only be suffering about 17,000 lb worth in depreciation. So, save yourself some money and buy it outright. But, there is an alternative.
[11:18] You see, you could upgrade to the EV9 by going for a used one. I found this one going for a used one. I found this one on Carwow. It is a 2024 model year with with buying a used car. You see, there's always a chance that the car may have a
[11:32] dodgy past. That's why I recommend using a car vertical history check because here's a car vertical report of an EV9 that's been in an accident. And after it Now, unless the seller told you, you wouldn't know unless you did that car
[11:45] when you're buying a used car you don't get caught out, you should do one, okay? And you can use the code car wow for up to 20% off. Do that right now. Click the link in the description or click on the pop-out banner or scan the QR code. Now,
[11:58] there is one advantage of the EV5 over the EV9, is that it's slightly smaller and that should make it better to drive in town. So, is it? This Kia is a breeze, even in tight spaces. Quite a big car, but the dash is low, so the
[12:10] judge where the corners of the car are. Yeah, the back window is decent as well. Big door mirrors. I find it so easy to drive. Plus, you can jack the seat up So, you really feel like you're in something like a Land Rover, look. But,
[12:24] this won't break down. And even if it does, you got a 7-year warranty. Oh, oh, the accelerator pedal and the brake feel jerky like some other electric cars. Kia have got this down, you know.
[12:37] They've got it down. There is one slight issue though. So, the turning circle on this car is a little bit worse than its competitors. I'm going to try and helping me by being there, but what I'm going to do is pop up the cameras.
[12:51] Annoyingly, you only get full 360 on the top spec car. Now, in the Peugeot e-3008, I think I'll get around here, but with this, ain't no way, baby. Ain't no way.
[13:03] I'm going to have to do an awkward maneuver. Can I do it in less than three maneuvers? I think I might this time. Just wait, my dear. Just wait. Oh, no. Sorry.
[13:20] looks very cross, but I know where the corners of the car are. Look, it's fine. Now, if you want to see my full in-depth video review of the Peugeot 3008, Click the QR code on screen. There's also a link in the description of this video.
[13:33] know about this car. There is no remote wash for the rear camera. As you can affect the view, which means if you want to clean it, you have to get out and do this. Look. Oh, look. Lovely. Lovely. The climate control
[13:46] information is blocked by the rim of the steering wheel. Can you see it? Can you You can't, can you? You have to look around. Look. Look around. There it is. There. Why did they put it there? The rear windows don't go all the way
[13:58] The rear windows don't go all the way down. this just a little bit more awkward and unnatural to use. It's functional. That's why it's got a proper handle. Look.
[14:12] handles things. The attention warning on this car is just too sensitive. Let's say you're traveling along. It's a nice sunny day. You're having a look out nice sunny day. You're having a look out over the countryside.
[14:26] Take your eyes away for a moment, and it's like, "Oi, no!" Even when you've got it in your peripheral, it just doesn't like it. Also, to make matters worse, unlike with the speed limit warning and the lane departure warning,
[14:38] can press on the steering wheel to turn off, you actually have to go through the menu on the screen by doing this. Look. Hitting setup. me because I'm busy operating the screen to turn the bloody thing off.
[14:53] Uh, taking longer because I can't find out where it is. Setup. Vehicle. Come on. Oh, no. I'm going to get shouted at again for not looking at the road. Vehicle.
[15:06] Driver assistance. Driver attention warning. Turn it off. And now I'm getting shouted at again That's so frustrating having to go through all that palaver to turn it off. Sometimes safety
[15:21] safety. I've noticed that this trim has started Although I'm not too worried because being a Kia, this car has a 7-year warranty. So I've got 7 years to fix that. Also, it's annoying that the boot
[15:35] release is so low down and it gets covered in dirt there. So it's driving with dirty hands unless you have the rain stopper with a hands-free tailgate. At least the boot opens nice and high. Then you have to press that button to go
[15:48] Okay. Now in here, you've got a few features such as these weird fixtures move around like that. So you can I don't know, hang bags off them, stuff Underneath here, you can store the load cover. Let's just get it out cuz we will
[16:04] need that in a moment. And as you can see, there's a flat load floor. See? but if you need to carry loads of things, lower position. Now we're going to see how much you can fit in this boot. It's
[16:18] got a capacity of 566 L and that means it's slightly smaller than the 585 L see my full in-depth video review of that car by clicking on the pop-out screen now. Right, let's get that into place and
[16:34] let's load it up. I fit nine suitcases in a Tesla Model Y. How many can I fit in a Tesla Model Y. How many can I fit in this? Let's go.
[17:02] We're going to have to stick at seven. Not great but not terrible. But there is a bit more space up front. Let's see if we can fit one more suitcase in there. I fitted one in the Tesla Model Y. Just What? Wait.
[17:15] Will it? I don't think this is going to shut. the rest of the boot, actually. If you really need to carry lots of suitcases,
[17:30] it can, of course, fold down the rear seats. And they lie they lie fairly flat. Look at that.
[17:46] right to the front. Apart from this. Stay down. It's got Velcro on it. There we go. That's better. Now, we can do this. Just slide things all the way in. Perfecto mundo. So, it is still a big,
[18:01] practical, sensible car. But, that brings us back to the original issue. You see, through Carwow, like for like, the EV5 is about £3,000 more expensive than the EV3. And yes, you do get more space, but you don't necessarily need
[18:16] a lot of space, you need the EV9. So, this is kind of floating in a sort of no man's land. And don't forget that EV3 is more efficient, which really does matter when you're buying an electric car. This is a great car, and if you're after
[18:29] shortlist it. But, overall, I would go for an EV3 and save myself a bit of of the videos, click on the video windows. And if you want to browse offers on the latest cars, click on the Carwow logo. Thanks for watching, and
[18:42] Carwow logo. Thanks for watching, and I'll see you next time.
