AI Summary

The creator discusses three horror movies that genuinely scared him despite his high tolerance for horror: Incantation, The Conjuring, and The Taking of Deborah Logan. He emphasizes the importance of immersion, sound design, and found footage elements in making these films effective.

[00:27]
High Horror Tolerance

Watching horror content daily for six months has built a hard shell, making it harder to find truly scary movies.

[00:43]
Incantation – Initial Disinterest

Initially bored by Incantation when watching with a friend, but found it drastically more immersive when watching alone at midnight.

[01:57]
Incantation – Immersion and Interactive Elements

The film's direct audience involvement (e.g., interacting with a ferris wheel, repeating chants) made the curse feel real, causing the creator to feel cursed for hours afterward.

[02:53]
Incantation – Pacing and Story

Expert pacing with no drag; the story of a mother and daughter is compelling, though some character decisions are frustrating.

[03:34]
Found Footage Appeal – Realism

The creator loves found footage films for their realism; Incantation's subtle performances and realistic shooting style enhance the scares.

[07:01]
The Conjuring – Personal Scare Factor

Despite being a skeptic about ghosts, The Conjuring remains one of the scariest films due to its expert craftsmanship and sound design.

[08:02]
The Conjuring – Real-Life Basis

The film's connection to the true story of the Perron family adds depth and makes it more terrifying, even if heavily dramatized.

[11:19]
The Taking of Deborah Logan – First Half Impact

The first half is especially scary, portraying an old woman with what seems like Alzheimer's but is something sinister. The ending is less effective but the final five minutes are shocking.

[12:15]
Found Footage Tropes – Mixed Quality

Common found footage issues like unrealistic camera handling, annoying characters, and obvious cuts detract from immersion but don't ruin the scare factor.

[13:25]
Trypophobia Warning

Warns viewers with trypophobia (fear of small holes) to avoid The Taking of Deborah Logan.

These three movies—Incantation, The Conjuring, and The Taking of Deborah Logan—successfully scared the creator by leveraging immersive storytelling, sound design, and found footage realism, even with minor flaws in pacing or character decisions.

[00:00] Before I begin, I would just like to say that this video is sponsored by Raycon. Stay tuned to find out more information later in the video. Hello everybody and welcome back to a brand new video. So I upload these videos usually once a month, but I think I actually missed the last two months.

[00:14] And there are a few reasons for that. One, it is getting a lot harder for me to find horror movies that are actually scary as my tolerance has built up to the tippity top. Basically every day for the last six months has literally just been watching horror content

[00:27] and it really has built a hard shell around me. But do not fear, some of them get through, and I will be talking about them in this video today. Alright, I'll stop wasting your time, let's talk about some horror movies that actually scared me.

[00:43] So the next movie on this list is Incantation, and this one is a bit of a funky one I guess you could say. I did previously mention that I tried to watch this movie before, and was absolutely bored by it, did not find it scary or intriguing whatsoever, but this was quite a while ago.

[01:00] And not to mention, I was watching it with my friend, and you know, if you play a game with your friend, watch a movie with your friend, you know it's never going to hit as if you're by yourself. Because personally, me and my friend, we cannot take anything seriously. We're laughing at quite literally everything we see.

[01:14] So when I did get the chance to watch this by myself at almost midnight, it changed things drastically. And good thing I am not a person who does drugs. I have never touched a drug in my life.

[01:26] But if I did like acid or smoked weed or something, I might have been spiraling for a few weeks after seeing this film. So just a little bit of backstory. I am currently moving this week. So this whole entire week has been so stressful with doing things with brand deals, making this video, doing homework, all the moving stuff.

[01:45] So I really wanted this film to kind of take my attention, take me out of the world that I'm in right now and just be immersed for an hour and 40 minutes. And yeah, I let incantation do that for sure.

[01:57] I thought for a solid like 10 hours after watching this movie that I was cursed. There's something so immersive with this film, just the way it speaks to the audience from the beginning to the end. Basically, the whole entire premise of the movie is your involvement.

[02:11] I don't want to give away too much, but in the beginning specifically, they have you interact with things on the screen like that ferris wheel that's going around and around. They're telling you to change it left to right, left to right, same with the train. And then they also tell you to start repeating stuff, which I didn't do because, honestly, I do not trust it.

[02:27] I am not a very religious person. I do not believe in ghosts very much. But yeah, this movie really got under my skin when it comes to making me feel like this curse that was going on in the film, this incantation, was lashing onto me.

[02:41] And that's just one of the aspects that really creeped me out during this film. There are truly some terrifying moments in this movie. and the best part about it is that I think everything is expertly paced as well.

[02:53] Nothing really feels like it's being dragged on. Everything cuts and starts at the perfect length and I never found myself getting bored and to add on to that, I thought the story was absolutely intriguing. I felt so bad for this woman's daughter in this movie.

[03:07] I feel like she was dragged into a situation that honestly she should have been kept away from and some of the decisions in this film are absolutely brain dead. I don know why people do half the things they do in this film but that doesn take away from the fact that I thought this was an absolute joy to watch and overall super terrifying What really sells this film for me is the found footage aspect of it I am a sucker for found footage films I feel like that all I been watching this week

[03:34] when trying to find horror movies for this video and I feel like to a certain extent it is pretty realistic. I feel like everything is shot pretty realistically. The acting is very great. There's some very subtle performances that really sell everything. Nothing's too over the top except for

[03:50] some parts but you can figure that out for yourself but it's just the subtleness of a lot of things that really sell it for me. I also really love the sound design in this film. I know I talk about sound design a lot but this movie definitely gets it right. I love when she's filming herself

[04:04] and there's those thumps and clutters in the background and you never really know what's going on especially in the beginning when there's this really gnarly scream that comes out of like an elevator I'm pretty sure it was and that scream alone sent chills down my spinal cord and the

[04:18] The reason I was able to hear these noises so well is thanks to our sponsor of today's video, Raycon. So it is that time of year where Santa Claus comes out and drops presents off and also when everything online gets a lot cheaper. I don't know why that's the case because Santa Claus is real and no one buys our gifts

[04:33] for us that doesn't make any sense. And joining into the Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals is Raycon, our sponsor of today's video. And trust me my little zerkies, this is a deal you do not want to miss. So Raycon's everyday earbuds are already known for their premium quality at an affordable price,

[04:48] but right now, hold on to your seats. You can get them for up to 30% off site-wide at buyraycon.com. These earbuds are an absolute game changer in my daily life. Whether I'm editing videos or listening to music or watching horror movies late at night

[05:03] and I don't want to disturb everyone in my house, the everyday earbuds deliver with a 32-hour battery life and active noise cancellation. The biggest thing here is the ANC. it is perfect for blocking out distractions when I need to focus. They're honestly super comfortable

[05:18] as well thanks to their ergonomic design and gel pitch that fit like a dream. And to add on to that they're also sweat and water resistant so you could be pumping iron at the gym while also doing it in the rain and you'll be I don't know why you would be doing that doesn't make much sense. Also

[05:31] the charging case it's really sleek small fits in your pocket and also supports wireless charging. Just 10 minutes of charging this bad boy gives you 90 minutes of play time now that is pretty sweet. Raycon combines premium quality with incredible value and now is the perfect time to try them out.

[05:47] Don't wait, head over to buyraycon.com slash zerk to get up to 30% off site wide. Once again that is buyraycon.com slash zerk for up to 30% off which will be in the description below.

[06:00] And um yeah thank you so much Raycon for supporting the channel and thank you guys for watching the ad if you did. And yeah go get your Raycons, go fill your ears up with some noise, I don't know. Anyway let's get back to the horror movies on this list. It's pretty grounded besides, you know, the whole ghost part of it, which I don't necessarily believe,

[06:16] but if a movie can make me kind of believe it a little bit, then yeah, they're doing something right for sure. Because I am a huge skeptic when it comes to that stuff. This is some foreshadowing for the next movie that's coming up in this list. And yeah, overall, I had a great time with Incantation. I am sorry for denying its scariness before.

[06:33] And I wasn't really expecting this to scare me as much as it did, because honestly, I don't think it's gonna scare a lot of people. But I don't know if it was just the mindset I was in. It was also raining here in New Jersey when I watched it, and there's been a pretty big drought.

[06:46] And it was also lightning and thundering, and it really added to it. So who knows maybe if I watched this at 3pm on a Tuesday afternoon it wouldn have hit as hard But I feel like Incantation caught me at the right time in the wrong time of my life to really scare me and immerse me

[07:01] fully in this world. I'm going to give Incantation two thumbs up, and yes, it did scare me. Now, The Conjuring. For some reason, I've always been kind of scared to put this movie on my list,

[07:15] and I'm honestly ashamed that I've let it get to this point where I'm afraid to put movies on the list because I'm scared people are going to call me out for being basic, but who gives a shit? This movie was one of the first horror movies that genuinely, actually scared me. And luckily,

[07:31] this isn't nostalgia talking. This movie, to me, is so scary to this very day. And as I mentioned before, I am not a huge ghost person. I do not think ghosts are real. I think basically all the evidence that's ever been shown about ghosts just isn't real. And everything related to ghosts and

[07:47] people searching for them is basically done for monetary gain, for example, Sam and Goldie, and a lot of it just isn't real, and it doesn't frighten me or scare me in any way, shape, or form. But man, if there is a compelling piece of evidence, it is this film. When I saw this as a

[08:02] child, dude, this movie was real. This was one-to-one based off the true story in real life. That was before I did research and looked things up online, but this movie is so expertly crafted

[08:14] in the horror genre and the fact that it scared the absolute shit out of me definitely says something. There are so many different scenes to point to when it comes to talking about this film that it would take me a whole entire video just to discuss this movie alone. Now you might be

[08:28] asking Zerk how many times can you spam the word sound design in your videos but trust me when I say sound design I mean it. The sound design is absolutely phenomenal in this film. One of my

[08:41] favorite aspects of horror films and building up tension is cutting out the music and letting the scene speak for itself. Whether it's the clapping noises when they're playing like the hide and seek type game or when the audio cuts out and all there is is a breath to emphasize a horrifying

[08:56] jump scare that comes right after. I absolutely love this film. I watch it every single year. I never miss it and it's kind of a shame that the rest of the series absolutely tanked after the

[09:08] second film. I feel like the second film was almost pushing it at some points, and then, yeah, it just kind of went off the rails. That's my opinion. If you love the later movies, good for you. Unfortunately, I feel like it just kind of lost its identity. But my favorite aspect of this one,

[09:21] compared to the rest of the series and a lot of ghost horror films, is that it is seemingly pretty realistic. I know there's, like, parts where chairs are flipped upside down with people sitting in them and they're shaking their heads and shit. Yeah, that's just given with the space. But you

[09:35] really get to see how bad this possession and this ghost haunting takes over this family's lives as they turn to Ed and Lorraine Warren for any help whatsoever. It's a harrowing tale, it's a terrifying story, and the fact that it does tie into a story that has happened in real life,

[09:52] although it is dramatized quite a lot and it is Hollywoodified, the real life story because of how bad it affected the people who were a part of it is just as terrifying as the actual movie. When you put all of this together it really adds to a super immersive experience and overall

[10:08] a very compelling ghost story and also a kind of family drama. Now the family drama isn't as hardcore as Hereditary but it's still there and it's still very engaging to watch. If I were to pick a particular scene in this film that truly scared the shit out of me it would be that scene where you know what I just show it I just show it to you guys

[10:41] Yeah, that scene really sucked me up, and it still does to this day, and if you go and you look online it seems to affect a lot of hardcore horror veterans as well. So the elitist who absolutely love to bash on people's horror takes just save your comment. I already know what

[10:55] you're gonna say. I like this movie and I feel like a lot of people love it as well. And although James Warren may have had some interesting movies made in the past he has some absolute bangers and I love watching his horror movies every time he comes out with a new one. Insidious is also a

[11:09] great one that I feel like kind of went off the rails. But yeah I might include that in another video I need to definitely re-watch that. So yeah let's move on to the final movie in this list. Alright so next up we have The Taking of Deborah Logang and this is also a film that I've watched

[11:24] before that I thought yeah it was kind of scary but on a re-watch dude the first half of this movie hits hard. Now I'm not saying the end of it doesn't and I'm not saying that the second half as a whole doesn't hit it just doesn't hit as hard. Watching this old lady go through what you

[11:40] think is Alzheimer's disease, which in reality, there's something a little bit more sinister than that. Dude, Alzheimer's is such a hard word for me to pronounce. I still get comments every day of people saying, why did you pronounce Alzheimer's? Dude, I don't, I just can't say it.

[11:53] There's something about old people walking around the house butt naked that just freaks me the hell out. Especially when they're shown to be like relatively pretty slow. It takes them a while to get up after sitting down. And then all of a sudden they have this speed of like using bolt

[12:08] and they're running around the house, feet slapping and clapping on the hardwood. That gets to me, man. That really does. Now, I don't think this movie is perfect, but I do think it is scary. The ending gets a bit jumbled and a little bit convoluted, and then it also gets a little bit predictable as well,

[12:22] and then it leans on some tropes. And also, this is another found footage movie. That's two on the list. I was actually going to add another one, but I didn't get around to watching it this week, which is The Borderlands. It's kind of a toss-up between which one you think is scarier,

[12:35] this one or this one. they're probably pretty similar in scare factor but with sound footage sometimes there do come the tropes and things that I don't enjoy whether it's unrealistic things that happen with the

[12:47] camera or you can tell some of the cuts are obviously very cut like they will turn from left to right and all of a sudden they'll teleport across the whole entire lawn and there's also the case of the annoying guy behind the camera there's just a lot of annoying characters in this film but

[13:03] Besides them, there are a lot of scary parts. And I did say that the ending of this film I wasn't a big fan of, but the very, very end of this film is fucking crazy. This movie is worth a watch alone just for the last like five minutes of this film.

[13:19] So overall, I did find this movie very scary, and I think any horror fan should definitely check it out. If you have trypophobia, which I'm pretty sure that's how you pronounce it, it's like a fear of little holes and shit, do not watch this movie.

[13:31] That is my only disclaimer. So yeah, those are the movies that I've seen this month that I thought were genuinely scary. Make sure you leave yours in the comment section below. And yeah, I gotta get to packing, guys. I move out in literally four days and nothing is packed.

[13:44] So I'll see you guys in the next one. Have a great day, great night. And yeah, goodbye.
