Lake Mungo: One masterful jump scare

The Australian mockumentary Lake Mungo is highlighted as a film that uses a single, well-executed jump scare to heighten psychological horror.

[02:15]
Lake Mungo plot

The film follows a family grieving their daughter Alice, who drowned, and their paranormal encounters with her ghost, told through a mockumentary format.

[03:37]
Haunted house movies are hit or miss

While classics like The Conjuring are decent, they lack the lingering fear that keeps viewers uneasy at night.

Hell House LLC: Surprisingly scary

Initially dismissed as low-budget, Hell House LLC is a found footage film about a haunted house attraction gone wrong, with realistic characters and a tense climax.

[06:34]
2020 and internet-based horror

The pandemic isolation inspired Host, a film set entirely on a Zoom call where a séance summons a demon.

The scariest part of Host is the realization that the viewer is also part of the Zoom call, blurring the line between film and reality.

Special mentions: Sinister and Skinamarink

Sinister is scary until it over-explains, while Skinamarink evokes a quiet, liminal fear like a familiar nightmare.

[00:00] look if you clicked on this video you're

[00:02] looking for horror movies that are

[00:03] actually scary horror movies these days

[00:06] just aren't that scary anymore sure some

[00:09] of them are pretty good but not all of

[00:11] them will actually scare you I'm talking

[00:13] sleeping with the lights on scary I'm

[00:15] talking showering with your eyes open

[00:17] scary so I've gone through most of the

[00:19] scary movie lists you can find on the

[00:20] internet and I got to say these horror

[00:23] movies I'm about to show you actually

[00:26] scared me and we'll stick with you long

[00:27] after the credits roll

[00:34] don't you just hate jump scares there's

[00:37] nothing I hate more than when movies try

[00:39] way too hard to scare me and I'm just

[00:40] sitting there

[00:42] like okay maybe I'm being a little

[00:44] harsher look as much as I love a good

[00:46] jump scare they can get really boring

[00:49] really fast take a look at these for

[00:51] example

[01:02] they're great for a quick jolt but it

[01:05] doesn't always quite work and doesn't

[01:07] really get you scared sure for a brief

[01:10] moment you get all jumpy but that's

[01:12] pretty much it lots of horror movies

[01:15] stand to rely on this strob to get easy

[01:16] scares and people often associate

[01:19] getting shocked with getting scared I

[01:21] mean that ain't fear you were just

[01:23] surprised so you'd think that after

[01:25] years and years of jump scares I'd still

[01:27] be phased by what flickering lights in

[01:30] that screeching violin sound please at

[01:33] this point it's like when a comedian

[01:34] says get it every time they make a joke

[01:37] jump scares are okay they're great when

[01:40] used effectively but having too much of

[01:42] them though is basically admitting the

[01:44] movie isn't scary enough on its own but

[01:47] what if I told you that there's actually

[01:48] a movie so scary it only needed one

[01:52] masterfully executed jump scare

[02:01] before I made this video I didn't

[02:02] realize how Australia has been putting

[02:05] out great horror movies for years

[02:08] there's the babadook the loved ones more

[02:11] recently you have talked to me and of

[02:12] course Lake [ __ ] I don't even know

[02:15] where to begin with this movie it's like

[02:17] have you ever had the feeling of being

[02:20] watched while watching cuz that's

[02:22] exactly how this movie made me feel Lake

[02:24] [ __ ] is about a family grieving the

[02:27] loss of their daughter Alice who died by

[02:29] drowning as her family comes to grips

[02:31] with her death they all start having

[02:33] nightmares and seemingly paranormal

[02:35] encounters with Alice's ghost she shows

[02:38] up in their dreams in photos and videos

[02:41] and even in real life what follows is a

[02:43] very unnerving look about what happens

[02:46] when somebody close to you dies it's all

[02:48] told through a mockumentary format which

[02:51] added a sense of claustrophobic realism

[02:54] which in turn makes the whole thing even

[02:56] more unsettling the plot unfolds in a

[02:59] way that makes it its horror turn from

[03:00] something Supernatural into something

[03:03] more psychological everything about his

[03:06] movie is very atmospheric and the whole

[03:08] thing feels like a true crime

[03:10] documentary but with ghosts I'm not

[03:12] going to tell you where the jump scare

[03:14] is but I will say that you might not see

[03:17] it coming cuz you know how jump scares

[03:20] build that tense anticipation like

[03:23] before they pay it off with that big

[03:24] jump yeah like the whole movie feels

[03:27] like it's one long jump scare buildup

[03:30] I don't want to give anything more away

[03:33] because this is a movie that you should

[03:34] definitely see for

[03:36] yourself Haunted House movies are pretty

[03:39] Hit or Miss they're a classic horror

[03:42] movie setting as old as the genre itself

[03:45] and over the years we've seen tons of

[03:48] them come out some of them are pretty

[03:51] great and let's be honest some of them

[03:52] are straight up dog

[03:54] sh James Juan has been at the Forefront

[03:56] of the Haunted House Revival with movies

[03:58] like The Conjuring and Insidious while

[04:01] these movies are great horror films and

[04:03] actually provide you with decent scares

[04:05] they lack a certain factor that makes it

[04:07] hard for you to go to the bathroom in

[04:09] the middle of the

[04:19] [Music]

[04:25] night I got to be honest when I first

[04:27] saw Hell House LLC I thought it was when

[04:29] of of those goofy Barkin bin horror

[04:32] movies you'd watch when you just want to

[04:34] turn your brain off but boy was I wrong

[04:37] and the best and worst possible way best

[04:39] cuz I found an actually scary horror

[04:42] movie and worse cuz well pretty much the

[04:45] same thing Hell House LLC is a found

[04:47] footage movie about a group of friends

[04:49] who created a haunted house attraction

[04:50] called Hell House at an abandoned Hotel

[04:52] in abdon New York as you could probably

[04:54] tell making a haunted house attraction

[04:56] at a rundown hotel with rumors of

[04:59] satanic activities in the past isn't

[05:01] going to end well the movie starts with

[05:02] news reports about how 15 people died

[05:05] and plenty more injured because of an

[05:07] unknown malfunction during the opening

[05:09] night of Hell House a documentary crew

[05:12] is set on investigating what really

[05:13] happened during that fateful night they

[05:16] managed to interview people familiar

[05:17] with the case and eventually track down

[05:19] the last surviving member of the Hell

[05:21] House staff Sarah Sarah provides them

[05:24] with a vide tapes that show exactly what

[05:26] went down and what went down is scary as

[05:29] [ __ ]

[05:30] it all builds up to an intense climax

[05:32] that you just have to see to believe

[05:34] also there's this

[05:37] guy oh [ __ ]

[05:39] dude what's up man what are you looking

[05:47] at holy

[05:49] [ __ ] got me

[05:52] man the characters in this movie have

[05:54] great chemistry and the way they act and

[05:57] react are very believable if you imagine

[06:00] yourself in the same

[06:02] situation Hell House LLC is actually the

[06:05] first part of a series of films that

[06:07] delve deeper into the Mysteries that the

[06:09] incident in this movie kicked off I'm

[06:12] honestly kind of cynical when it comes

[06:14] to found footage horror ever since the

[06:16] first Paranormal Activity blew up since

[06:19] then there's been a slew of terrible

[06:20] movies made on a low budget that didn't

[06:23] exactly make the sub genre respectable

[06:25] but it's a good thing movies like this

[06:27] exist to remind us all that hope isn't

[06:31] lost 2020 was a horrible time it was a

[06:34] pretty messed up thing that we can all

[06:37] agree give us all Collective trauma

[06:39] about being isolated lucky for us we

[06:41] live in the Golden Age of Technology

[06:43] where the internet brings people closer

[06:46] together the internet became a Haven for

[06:48] everyone who wanted an escape from

[06:50] reality or to just be in touch with the

[06:52] people they love it became the primary

[06:54] means of communication so it didn't take

[06:56] long before people started coming up

[06:58] with ideas about how go posts can haunt

[07:00] us through the internet found footage

[07:02] works really well when it comes to [ __ ]

[07:05] because it adds that sense of realism

[07:07] which makes you feel like this could

[07:09] happen to you or like it could happen to

[07:11] anyone you know but what if there was a

[07:13] found footage movie that made you feel

[07:15] like you yourself is a part of the whole

[07:18] thing

[07:21] [Music]

[07:35] [Music]

[07:40] okay so I'm a sucker for techno horror

[07:43] because like a lot of people my age or

[07:45] just like a lot of people in general I'm

[07:48] chronically online I know there were

[07:50] tons of more problematic and actually

[07:52] scary stuff on the internet than ghosts

[07:55] but this one still really bothers me I

[07:58] like going on video calls with friends

[08:00] but when you start bringing a ghost in

[08:02] that equation you know you know it's

[08:04] bound to get creepy that's exactly what

[08:07] happens in the 2020 film host in all

[08:09] fairness the characters in this movie

[08:10] had it all coming when they tried to do

[08:12] a sance online simply because they were

[08:14] bored like who does that there's

[08:16] literally a million other ways to use

[08:18] the internet when you're bored as

[08:20] expected all hell Let's Lose once these

[08:23] people unwittingly summon a demon who

[08:25] just [ __ ] everyone up this movie Just

[08:27] Hits all the right nose when it comes to

[08:29] cares and actually comes up with

[08:31] something that is both fun and

[08:32] interesting there's something a little

[08:34] cathartic about everyone getting what's

[08:36] coming to them when they intentionally

[08:38] [ __ ] around with demons and [ __ ] the

[08:40] best part about this movie is knowing

[08:42] that it was all filmed remotely so

[08:44] everyone kind of had to set up their own

[08:46] props and practical effects at home plus

[08:49] it really was filmed through Zoom but

[08:51] you know what the scariest part of this

[08:52] movie is the scariest part of this movie

[08:55] is how one by one everyone in the zoom

[08:57] call was getting picked off and and then

[08:59] you slowly realize aren't you kind of a

[09:02] part of the zoom call

[09:06] too there is still lots of scary movies

[09:09] out there that you need to see I just

[09:11] want to give a special mention to these

[09:13] movies that scared me but didn't quite

[09:15] stick The Landing first up I got to

[09:18] mention sinister sinister was considered

[09:20] the scariest movie of all time according

[09:22] to science and I can agree with that to

[09:24] an extent the first half of this movie

[09:28] was a master class in horror

[09:30] it was incredibly disturbing that

[09:32] opening sequence of a family slowly

[09:34] getting hanged from a tree that's the

[09:35] stuff of nightmares it all kind of fell

[09:38] apart when they tried to

[09:43] overexplained don't exactly look scary

[09:46] even the evil Dy at the center of the

[09:49] all doesn't look scary at all I mean

[09:51] look at him you can't expect me to

[09:52] believe that this is some ancient demon

[09:55] but that said this movie was really

[09:57] scary until it wasn't last I want to

[10:00] mention skin Marine I don't want to

[10:02] dwell too much on this movie since I

[10:04] plan on making a video about it in the

[10:06] future but yeah this movie was pretty

[10:08] scary to me it's one of those movies

[10:10] that you either get or you don't it

[10:13] appeals to a certain kind of fear that I

[10:15] feel only a select group of people have

[10:18] experienced firsthand that very quiet

[10:21] Lial sort of fear it's like one long

[10:24] nightmare that feels oddly familiar

[10:30] I hope you found these movies

[10:31] interesting and I hope you check them

[10:33] out these are good horror movies and

[10:35] they're actually pretty scary thanks for

[10:37] watching everyone I hope you enjoyed the

[10:39] video all right I'm out
