[00:28] video about the wealthy powerful part of Sydney this is a story about the unfortunate consequences of three Wars government policy lacking foresight and government policy lacking foresight and HVAC systems

[00:46] are ridiculously expensive thanks to them being close to the economic Center of Sydney and having wonderful view further you go west from the CBD and the

[00:58] employment opportunities that the city provides the price of housing drop until you reach the region of Sydney called the western suburbs or simply the west

[01:10] and the people who live in these suburbs called Westies war the men and women who fought against fascism in Europe Africa and Asia

[01:29] returned to Australia they needed housing and to avoid being overwhelmed with a homeless military trained populace the New South Wales Housing

[01:42] Commission was established this government body purchased land in the then empty area west of Sydney and redeveloped it into cheap subsidized housing after the post-war period access to this subsidized housing was expanded

[01:58] to this subsidized housing was expanded to people who were unable to afford to house themselves until the 1980s most Housing Commission

[02:10] until the 1980s most Housing Commission homes were concentrated in the West in particular around areas of Blacktown a name that is actually more racist than you would initially guess as it was named after a school for Aboriginal

[02:24] children who the government had kidnapped from their parents and the kidnapped from their parents and the neighboring suburb of rooty Hill a hill named for the wheat that used to be grown there that was sent to India to be

[02:38] made into bread or in Hindi rooty or alternatively it might have been named that way because the hill had a lot of roots in it now the more attentive of you might think concentrating a whole lot of economically vulnerable people

[02:55] lot of economically vulnerable people into a small area of underserver suburbs into a small area of underserver suburbs might have some negative consequences

[06:30] left this system it is still quite hot so allowing all that heat to escape into the atmosphere would be rather wasteful if we feed this hot gas through a heat exchanger we can use it to heat and even boil water this hot water

[06:47] then can be used to supply hot water to Taps and showers heat heated swimming pools in the Aquatic Center and it can even be used for central heating but even be used for central heating but Western Sydney has a humid sub-tropical

[07:02] climate with temperatures are going up to 33 degrees C in the summer that's 91 Fahrenheit and down to 12C in the winter that's 54 Fahrenheit there is a bigger

[07:15] need for cooling than for heating but can we turn can we turn warmth into couth and yes coof is a real word I was taught that word by a professor specializing in air

[07:29] conditioning technology an example of such a system that can make use of waste such a system that can make use of waste heat utilizes the fat that gas expanding into a low pressure chamber will cool down so if you had as a random example a

[07:46] tank full of pressurized ammonia gas and You released it via a valve into a vacuum chamber the gas would rapidly cool down but this cooling would be a temporary thing as soon as the gas pressure equalized it would stop cooling

[08:02] but we can make use of another property of ammonia to deal with that at low of ammonia to deal with that at low temperatures ammonia is very soluble in water at five degrees Centigrade 1000 grams of water and dissolved up to 0.8

[08:17] kilograms of ammonia for those suffering under the domination of the British imperial system one thousand pounds of water can dissolve up to 800 pounds of

[08:30] ammonia this means that the water ammonia solution can be up to 45 ammonia compare this with table salt which can barely get up to 26 percent so

[08:45] if we keep spraying water into the chamber the ammonia will get sucked out chamber the ammonia will get sucked out of its gaseous form and into the water keeping the pressure low inside the chamber we can then use

[09:01] low inside the chamber we can then use this cold water ammonia solution as our source of cool allowing it us to run refrigerators data centers and general air conditioning this system is going to run out of ammonia and water unless we

[09:17] can regenerate and separate the ammonia from the water and now here comes another useful property of ammonia ammonia is very soluble in cold water ammonia is very soluble in cold water but in warm water not so much

[09:32] so if you hate the ammonia solution up the ammonia will be forced out you can use that waste heat provided by our generator to heat up and drive the ammonia out of our water solution we can then cool the ammonia and the water

[09:49] separately down to the temperature of the outside environment and we then have the outside environment and we then have separated water and ammonia all ready to be used in our cooling system again there are not just ammonia based

[10:05] there are not just ammonia based absorption coolers there are also water lithium bromide absorption coolers possible as well which work on very similar principles what was I talking about oh yeah sometimes neat engineering
