AI Summary

The Chery Tiggo 4 is a budget-friendly SUV that offers exceptional value for money, starting under £20,000. While it has some cheap-feeling elements and lacks driving refinement, its spacious interior, powerful hybrid engine, and long warranty make it a compelling choice for practical buyers.

Starts under £20,000, range topper under £22,000, potential Carwow discount up to £2,000.

[1:51]

[3:52]
Design similarities

[4:42]
Handling issues

Cornering pushes wide, steering has dead zone and sticky feel, not fun to drive.

[5:58]
Interior quality

Soft-touch materials, sharp infotainment, digital driver display, touch-sensitive climate controls (not physical buttons).

[7:45]
Rear space

Good knee and headroom, flat floor, ISOFIX high but usable, hard plastics on rear doors.

[9:10]
Town driving

Good visibility, 360-degree camera, lumpy suspension, but brakes are smooth.

[11:24]
Surprising features

Door exit warning light, USB for dashcam, 56 MPG achieved, 8-year battery warranty, easy to disable driver assists.

[12:15]
Boot space

430L, but battery hump and uneven folded seats limit practicality.

The Chery Tiggo 4 is not for driving enthusiasts, but for most people seeking insane value for money, it's hard to ignore. The reviewer will recommend it to many despite its flaws.

[00:00] This is the new Cherry Tigo 4 and it's a

[00:02] car that I personally would not buy, but

[00:05] it's one I'll actually end up

[00:06] recommending to lots of people. Here's

[00:08] why.

[00:12] Now, before people start commenting

[00:14] that, uh, Matt, I would pay you to say

[00:15] nice things about their car. Uh, not

[00:17] true, because if I was being paid, I

[00:19] wouldn't be saying things such as this.

[00:21] If you know where to look, bits of this

[00:22] car feel really cheap. Look at this.

[00:24] Ooh. And when you shut the rear door,

[00:27] the boost vibrates.

[00:30] And that's not the only vibrating thing

[00:32] on this car. The rear view mirror on

[00:34] this car wobbles like crazy. Watch this.

[00:36] Look at it.

[00:39] It's terrible. This is not paint. If you

[00:42] look closely, you'll see it's a wrap.

[00:45] Look, look, look, look at that. Look,

[00:47] look. A badly done wrap. Looks like

[00:50] they've taken it to Yiannise. Sorry,

[00:52] Yanni. Only joking. There's no lights

[00:54] for the vanity mirrors. Then there's

[00:56] this bit of trim here. I don't know why

[00:58] it's not smooth like this bit. Look,

[01:01] it's like there should be an end cap on

[01:02] it, but there's there's just not to save

[01:04] money. Also, what are these switches

[01:07] for? Look, they're clearly for a sunroof

[01:09] that's not there. You do get the sunroof

[01:11] in other markets, but I don't know why

[01:12] in this market they just didn't have a

[01:14] different panel there. Once again,

[01:15] saving money. Thing is, the Chinese are

[01:18] pretty smart. They're saving money in

[01:20] areas that only a geek like me will

[01:23] spot. The benefit is that this car is

[01:25] insanely good value for money. starts

[01:27] from under £20,000. This range topper

[01:30] under £22,000. It's so new. There's no

[01:32] carow discount yet, but in a few months

[01:34] there will be one. And it could be up to

[01:36] two grand, which means this range could

[01:38] be under 20 grand, which is nuts. So,

[01:40] make sure you get a car out, see what

[01:42] offers are available on this car by

[01:44] following the links in the description,

[01:45] the pin comment, and whatever is

[01:47] appearing on the screen right now. And

[01:49] in some ways, this car does actually

[01:51] feel expensive. I do not know of a car

[01:53] at this price point that has Posh gas

[01:57] struts for the bonnet. And then there's

[01:59] the engine that you're getting for your

[02:01] money. This car has way more power than

[02:03] its similarly priced competitors. So,

[02:06] we've got a 1.5 L petrol engine, hybrid

[02:08] system, 200 horsepower. That's the same

[02:10] amount of horsepower as a Mark 5 Golf

[02:13] GTI had. Let's see if it is as quick as

[02:15] one from naugh to 60 mph. Here we go. 3

[02:17] 2 1 go.

[02:19] Oh, bit of wheel spin. Oh, here we go.

[02:23] What's it going to do? No, it's not as

[02:25] fast as the Golf. 9.6.

[02:27] What's it done with all its power? It's

[02:29] actually supposed to do 0 to 60 in 8.9

[02:32] seconds. Let's change the mode. Sport

[02:35] mode. Here we go.

[02:39] Yes, that's it. That's it. We got the

[02:43] petrol motor doing something now. Wow,

[02:45] what a difference. 7.9 seconds. Not as

[02:48] quick as a Mark 5. Golf GTI. That's 6.9

[02:52] seconds, but significantly quicker than

[02:54] I got in a Renault Capture, which is

[02:56] about the same money. That car took 9.2

[02:59] seconds to 60. I mean, it does make a

[03:01] racket when you're accelerating in

[03:03] sports mode, but

[03:05] okay, let's see if it stops as well as

[03:07] it goes. So, brake test from 60 mph and

[03:09] then I'm just going to do a full

[03:11] emergency stop. We're looking at around

[03:13] 35, maybe 34 m. 3 2 1.

[03:19] Hey, felt good. 36 m. So, that's all

[03:22] good. And there's something else I need

[03:23] to show you that's good. You see, a lot

[03:25] of journalists compare this car to the

[03:27] likes of a Volkswagen Tacross and a

[03:29] Renault Capture because it's in a

[03:31] similar price point, even though it

[03:32] undercuts those cars. But in terms of

[03:35] size, like the length

[03:38] and the width, it's similar in

[03:41] dimensions to cars from the class above,

[03:43] such as a Volkswagen T-Rock. You're

[03:46] getting a lot of car for your money. You

[03:48] could also argue that you're getting a

[03:50] lot of cars for your money. You see,

[03:52] it's almost like the designers came up

[03:54] with a mood board with various other

[03:57] cars on there to give them inspiration,

[03:58] but rather than just using them for

[04:01] ideas, they just took the various parts

[04:02] of the cars and brought them together.

[04:04] I'll show you what I mean. Now, the

[04:05] front is like a DS7. This part is very

[04:09] much like the previous generation

[04:11] Volkswagen T-Rock, while this bit is

[04:14] more Tiguan. Even the badge is a bit of

[04:17] a copy. It's like an Infiniti. Then

[04:19] there's this design element, which I'm

[04:21] sure I've seen on another car before,

[04:23] but I can't remember which one, so maybe

[04:25] you can comment if you recognize it.

[04:27] However, none of this will matter to

[04:28] buyers of this car. What will is whether

[04:30] it's an easy car to live with on their

[04:32] commute. This car is absolutely fine for

[04:35] people who aren't that into driving. But

[04:37] if you are, you may find it somewhat

[04:39] lacking. And here is why. the cornering.

[04:42] It's okay at first, but if you go a bit

[04:44] too quick, it starts to run out of ideas

[04:45] and push wide and get a little bit out

[04:47] of shape. Then when you floor the

[04:48] throttle, if you're in sports mode, you

[04:50] get this

[04:53] noise from the engine when you put your

[04:55] foot down. Then there's the steering,

[04:57] which you know when you like spill Coke

[05:00] or some soft drink over your computer

[05:02] keyboard and then the key sticks? the

[05:04] steering's like that when you first try

[05:05] to turn. It's like it's stuck and then

[05:06] you get past that bit and then the

[05:08] resistance that you have is the same no

[05:10] matter how much steering lock you apply.

[05:12] It's all a bit odd. Also, there's a bit

[05:14] of a dead zone in the steering. Look at

[05:16] that. I mean, look what

[05:21] So, this is not the sort of car that you

[05:22] derive any sort of driving pleasure

[05:24] from, but it's not so bad that it comes

[05:27] out the other side and just becomes a

[05:29] bit of a laugh to drive because it's so

[05:30] comical. a bit in the way that my Suzuki

[05:32] Jimny does. It's not bad enough to

[05:35] actually be good, if that makes sense.

[05:38] And to be fair, I do think that a

[05:39] Renault Capture does handle slightly

[05:41] better. And if you want to see my full

[05:42] in-depth video review of that car, click

[05:44] on the pop out banner appearing up

[05:46] there, scan the QR code on screen or

[05:48] follow the link in the description.

[05:50] However, handling isn't everything.

[05:53] Thing is, most people don't drive like

[05:55] me and they'll actually be impressed the

[05:57] moment they sit in this car because

[05:58] they'll go, "Wait a minute. The interior

[06:00] of this is way posher than you'd expect

[06:01] for this price point. In fact, you got

[06:03] soft touch materials here on the door.

[06:05] I've got a Kier EV5 in at the moment.

[06:07] It's twice the price of this and you

[06:08] don't have that on that car. In fact,

[06:10] all the materials here feel good. It's

[06:13] solid. It looks nice. The infotainment

[06:16] screen is sharp, clear, it's easy to

[06:18] use. And oh, why am I pressing home when

[06:22] I'm already in home? I love it to press

[06:23] that button there. Look. And yeah,

[06:27] however, the screen itself is a little

[06:29] bit far away. So, you do have to lean

[06:30] forward to operate it. The digital

[06:32] drivers display that is clear as well.

[06:34] It's simple. And I like the fact that

[06:36] you have separate controls from the

[06:37] climate. You can do it through the

[06:38] screen, but you can do it through this

[06:40] panel as well. Shame it's not physical

[06:41] buttons and it's just like touch

[06:42] sensitive buttons. And this is a bit

[06:44] odd. Look. So, you think that's going to

[06:46] be a slider, but it's not. If you slide

[06:48] it, the whole thing gets confused. Look,

[06:50] I'm sliding it. It's getting confused.

[06:51] Look, it's getting confused. What you

[06:53] actually have to do is just tap the big

[06:55] one or tap the small one.

[06:58] Why didn't they just do it like that?

[06:59] That just freaks your brain out. Other

[07:02] than that though, everything is fairly

[07:03] logically laid out. However, word of

[07:05] warning, if you have the entry-level

[07:06] car, you don't get this faux leather

[07:08] interior and you get a plastic steering

[07:09] wheel. The switch gear feels nicely

[07:12] damped. There's decent storage and

[07:15] everything feels solid. This range

[07:18] hopping car has 50 watt wireless

[07:20] charging. Decent cup holders. More

[07:22] storage under here. You got your USBs

[07:24] and stuff down there as well. Look,

[07:26] decent size glove box. And the door

[07:28] bins,

[07:30] they are big.

[07:33] The seating position is good as well.

[07:35] And there's enough adjustment in the

[07:37] steering wheel. The only thing that's

[07:38] lacking is the fact that no model gets

[07:41] lumbar support for either the driver or

[07:43] the passenger.

[07:45] I think this car is fine with people

[07:46] with families. Look, knee room's good.

[07:48] Head room's good. The floor is almost

[07:50] completely flat. There's plenty of foot

[07:52] space. If you need to carry three people

[07:54] at once, you can do so. Jump in, guys.

[07:57] So, as with all cars this size, you

[08:00] know, shoulder room is tight, but even

[08:02] the people Yeah. on the either side of

[08:05] me, head room and knee room is fine.

[08:07] >> Yeah.

[08:08] >> All righty. Jumping out. It's got enough

[08:09] space back here as well to fit a baby

[08:11] seat. It's a bit of a faf the location

[08:12] of the ISOIX. a bit high up, but once

[08:15] you've got your seat in position,

[08:16] there's plenty of room even for a bulky

[08:17] rearfacing seat. So, that is all good.

[08:19] What's not so good is that it doesn't

[08:21] feel quite as plush in the back as it

[08:23] does in the front because here, look,

[08:24] you got hard plastics on the door tops.

[08:27] Although, do you know what? A Volkswagen

[08:28] Tiguan is just the same. And this is a

[08:31] bit cheaper feeling here. And this panel

[08:32] here, it looks like it's going to have

[08:34] climate control behind it, but it's just

[08:35] blanked out because the ignition's not

[08:37] on. No, it's a shiny plastic. And why

[08:39] are why this day and age you only have

[08:40] one old school USB here in the back? I

[08:44] don't know. And there's other areas you

[08:45] see a little bit of costsaving. Listen

[08:47] to this.

[08:50] Not that or the fact that the window

[08:52] doesn't go all the way down. It's that.

[08:54] Listen to that.

[08:56] That's quite noisy. In fact, I wonder

[08:58] what the anti-pinch function is like.

[09:00] Will it take off your child's finger?

[09:03] No, it won't. Nothing to worry about.

[09:05] It's just noisy. Sorry Jerry for

[09:08] doubting you. Last thing to know,

[09:10] armrest, couple of cup holders aren't

[09:12] covered, but given the price point, we

[09:14] do not care. But there is something we

[09:16] do care about because this car needs a

[09:18] bit easier to drive in town, doesn't it?

[09:19] Cuz that's where most people are going

[09:20] to use it. So, this car is fairly easy

[09:23] to navigate in tight spaces. Look, we

[09:25] scoot through this gap. No problem. It's

[09:26] cuz you sit quite high. Visibility is

[09:28] generally good. Big door mirrors, decent

[09:31] back window. Fine. What's not so fine is

[09:34] the suspension can feel a little bit

[09:36] lumpy. It's not terrible, but when

[09:38] you're driving over uneven surfaces, it

[09:41] does get a little bit jiggly. One thing

[09:43] I can't fault though are the brakes. So,

[09:45] on quite a few Chinese hybrids and EVs,

[09:48] they can be a little bit grabby, but

[09:50] these ones aren't, which is good.

[09:52] There's another area that this car is

[09:54] good, and it's the maneuverability. Now,

[09:56] if you compare the turning circle to

[09:58] cars of a similar price, like a Scoda

[10:01] Kamik, it's not quite as good, but this

[10:03] is bigger. It's the same size as a

[10:04] Volkswagen T-Rock. If I press this

[10:06] button, I can get up 360 degree view,

[10:09] and then I can see the way I'm turning.

[10:12] Gives me a good idea of whether I'm

[10:13] going to get round in one go. Yeah.

[10:15] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

[10:18] All good. That is a good feature,

[10:20] though, isn't it?

[10:22] Been able to do that. Look either side

[10:24] of the car. That's nice. If you're the

[10:26] kind of person that likes to lease their

[10:27] vehicles, this car will not be for you

[10:29] because at the moment the leasing price

[10:31] over three years works out to about

[10:33] £17,000.

[10:35] So, you may as well buy it because the

[10:36] depreciation over that period will just

[10:38] be £9,000. However, better leasing deals

[10:41] will come through. And to make sure

[10:42] you're up to date, head to car wow,

[10:43] follow the link in the description or

[10:45] the pin comment. But there's an

[10:46] alternative. You see, for the same money

[10:48] as an entry level one of these, you

[10:49] could get yourself this used 30,000 mi

[10:52] 2-year-old Volkswagen T- Rockck on Car

[10:54] Wow. But when you buy used, you always

[10:56] need to keep your wits about you. That's

[10:58] why I recommend you do a car vertical

[11:00] used car history check. And here's an

[11:02] example of a VW T-Rock, which has a

[11:05] dodgy past. Look, it's got questionable

[11:07] mileage. It's got photos of accident

[11:09] damage as well. So, you can either walk

[11:10] away from the car and reject it or use

[11:12] that information to negotiate a lower

[11:14] price. If you want to head to Carver

[11:15] Vertical now, follow the link in the

[11:16] description of this video or scan the QR

[11:18] code or click on the pop out banner and

[11:20] use the code car wow for 20% off. Now, I

[11:24] want to show you some cool features on

[11:25] this car which are quite surprising

[11:27] considering the price. There's this

[11:28] little icon there in the door and what

[11:30] that does is light up if it senses that

[11:31] a car is about to pass you or a cyclist.

[11:33] Here's how it works. So, there's a car

[11:35] coming past. I want to get out. Oh, I'm

[11:36] just going to get out now. But, oh no,

[11:38] I'm not going to because that just

[11:40] flashed because there's a car coming.

[11:42] There's a handy USB up there. so that

[11:44] you can plug in a charging point for

[11:47] your dash cam rather than having like

[11:49] wires like dangling all across the

[11:51] place. This hybrid can be super

[11:53] efficient. When I was being sensible, I

[11:54] achieved 56 MPG. Cherry gives you a

[11:57] 100,000 mi 7-year warranty, but it's

[12:00] actually an extra year on top, 8 years

[12:02] for the battery. It's very simple to

[12:04] turn off all the annoying driver

[12:05] assistance systems. You can just quickly

[12:07] swipe down on the screen and then just

[12:10] dab away at them like that. Oh, go away.

[12:12] Yeah. Yeah. just go away.

[12:15] You also get a reasonable amount of boot

[12:17] space for your money. 430 L though. This

[12:20] is a bit odd. Look, there's a hump there

[12:23] cuz of the battery. Will it affect how

[12:27] many suitcases I can fit in? Let's go.

[12:36] That will be five. But there's something

[12:38] else you need to know about the boot.

[12:39] You see, when you fold the seats down,

[12:41] you get a bit of a lump there. I'm going

[12:44] show you the problem with that. When

[12:45] you're trying to push things through

[12:47] like that,

[12:48] it's a bit more problematic

[12:57] as you can see. And that's not all.

[12:59] Look, this boot doesn't actually open

[13:01] that high. It's all right for me. Look,

[13:02] cuz I'm I'm not the tallest. Lewis,

[13:04] look, it's crushing his gelled hair.

[13:06] He's not happy. So, where does that

[13:09] leave us? Well, while I personally

[13:11] wouldn't buy one, and I wouldn't

[13:12] recommend it for people who are into

[13:14] cars and driving, for the vast majority

[13:16] of people who just want something that

[13:17] is insanely good value for money, this

[13:21] is hard to ignore. And that's why I'll

[13:23] be recommending to many people that they

[13:25] should go right ahead and buy a Cherry

[13:28] Tig 4. I hope you'll enjoyed the video.

[13:30] If you did, give it a like. Let me know

[13:32] what you think of my verdict in the

[13:34] comments. If you want to watch some

[13:35] other videos, click on the video windows

[13:36] and click on the Carwell logo to see how

[13:39] much you can save on your next car.

[13:41] Thanks for watching.
