Marvel's Doomsday Watchlist Explained — Full Breakdown & Transcript

[00:01] released a list of recommended shows and movies to watch before you see Avengers Doomsday. Hey, welcome back to Screen Crush. I'm Colton Ogburn and in this one films and shows that have been featured in a countdown to Avengers Doomsday

[00:15] playlist at the very top of the Marvel tab on Disney Plus. And we are going to discuss why Marvel is recommending these specific titles to watch before Doomsday. And we're also going to talk about some pretty glaring omissions. All

[00:28] first X-Men movie. Now, what's really fun about including the original X-Men movie on this list is that that's really where it all began. The collection of Avengers Doomsday is serving as the crescendo to, that all traces back to

[00:44] this movie. It was Kevin Feigi's first job on a Marvel film, introducing legends like Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, Patrick Stewart's Xavier, and Ian Mckllen's Magneto. And this X-Men movie was for all intents and purposes the

[00:56] first superhero movie as we know them today. It was the beginning of this era of comic book films. Now, beyond all of that and the cool meta reasons for including this film on the list, what is the reason from a story perspective? Why

[01:10] include this particular film as part of the Doomsday watch list? Personally, if you had asked me, I would have thought that maybe just X2 would be the only X-Men film that you should watch before Doomsday. just to kind of give you a

[01:22] reminder of that Fox era X-Men universe, reintroduce you to characters like Mystique and Nightcrawler. But with X1 also being on this list, it makes me wonder what about this movie is particularly important for going into

[01:34] Doomsday. My guess, the relationship between Magneto and Xavier and how their approach to saving mutankind and coexisting with humans or not coexisting with humans will apply to the debate that will be had over incursions and how

[01:48] to best handle them. Now, next on the list is arguably the greatest X-Men movie, X2, X-Men United. Now, I would assume the intent of this watch list is to not only give pertinent information for Doomsday, but to really serve as a

[02:00] refresher and get you reattached and reinvested in certain characters and story beats that you maybe haven't thought about or experienced in a long time. So, the idea is to get you reinvested so that Doomsday hits even

[02:12] casual fans who maybe don't watch every Screen Crush video who maybe haven't seen the Fox X-Men movies in like 15 or 20 years. And so, that is the key reason I think they have X2 on this list,

[02:24] because it shows us the X-Men working together and working with Magneto and Mystique, who are both official members of the X-Men team in Avengers Doomsday. introduces us to the character of Nightcrawler, who is of course also in

[02:38] Doomsday. It is also in X2 that we see the immense power of Cerebro, which could come into play in Doomsday on a multiversal level. And we of course can't forget about Storm and especially Gan Gray, who as of right now aren't

[02:51] there's a really good chance that they're in this movie. X2 also does a great job at reminding us of that friendnemy relationship that is very complicated between Xavier and Magneto. And overall, in that movie, we get to

[03:04] see the X-Men as a team at their best. So, I totally get having this one on the that it's important. >> Hey, are those treats? Can I have some?

[04:51] And the first one on the list is Captain America: The First Avenger. I think this one is obvious. This is the movie that establishes the character of Steve Rogers, the life he thought he wanted, getting that life only to realize that

[05:03] the life he truly wanted was one with Peggy. But he had to take that away from himself to save the world. And now, as we know, at the end of Avengers Endgame, he goes back in time to live that life with Peggy. And that is likely

[05:16] we're seeing happen on the time stream and in the multiverse come doomsday. So having that refresher of the only Marvel movie that truly features Peggy Carter in a leading role and shows her and

[05:29] Steve's relationship and highlights the life that they missed. That is all a great setup and refresher to make you appreciate the life that we will see them living together in Doomsday with their son and how that is all about to

[05:41] be taken away once again. And Haley Atwell, she was at D23's Marvel panel for the Doomsday portion of the presentation. So, I think that is a hint that she is actually going to have a pretty decentsized role in Doomsday

[05:54] appearances she has had since the first Avenger. Now, the next movie on the list is the Avengers. Now, this first Avengers movie, I would assume is the first Avengers movie, and this is the first chapter in the saga that is

[06:09] the Avengers. The Battle of New York is the event that kickstarted the bizarre movie not only showed the Avengers assembling for the first time, but also the creation of Avengers Tower, which will be a key location in Doomsday. This

[06:23] movie also spends a lot of time showing the Avengers team not really being this perfect, welloiled machine. They spent a lot of the movie bickering and literally fighting each other. These characters did not get along at all, and they all

[06:35] had egos that needed to be crushed. And that is a great reminder as we go into Doomsday where we know Sam and Yolena will be facing a similar tension when it comes to working together in their fight over who gets to be the Avengers. And

[06:48] what that first Avengers movie will remind us of is that these characters had to put aside their egos and their differences and learn to trust each other, work together, and actually become a team. And that is what we will

[07:00] see happen for Yolena and Sam, I believe, in Doomsday. So, next on the list, we blow past all the other Infinity Saga movies, and we land at Infinity War, the big culmination event of that saga, where we saw for the first

[07:13] time our heroes lose. And that's a good tea up for what's likely to happen in Doomsday. With Secret Wars on the way, I think it's a safe bet that Doomsday has a similar ending to Infinity War in the sense that the villain, Dr. Doom, will

[07:26] win round one. Infinity War was also, of course, the big event that kickstarted the multiverse saga because Thanos's snap, it was the tragedy that provoked the Avengers to do something so reckless and desperate in Avengers Endgame as to

[07:39] conduct this time heist, the very event that landed Loki on the throne at the end of time, dethroning he who remains and allowing for the multiverse to expand. So, naturally on this list is also Avengers Endgame. But I'm going to

[07:53] say I recommend not watching Endgame right now and instead holding for the release of Avengers Endgame Encore in September. A movie that will feature new scenes making the movie feel even more like a direct leadin to Doomsday. Now in

[08:06] Tony Stark creating time travel and our bringing folks back from the dead, and in Steve Rogers case living a stolen life and now eventually creating a life that was never supposed to be. Now, next

[08:20] on the list, we make our way into the Multiverse Saga. And the first one we have is the Loki series. And I'm really glad to see Loki on this list because one, it's a fantastic show. And two, while it was certainly an interesting

[08:33] move to introduce so much of the groundwork for this saga in a Disney Plus streaming series instead of like in a movie, and while a lot of the Kang stuff kind of doesn't matter anymore, this is still the show to get a grasp on

[08:45] the concept of the MCU multiverse. Kind of. This show introduced us to one of the main things that I think will be a topic of discussion in Doomsday, which is free will. And this debate of what is more moral. Is it more moral to take

[08:59] away trillions of lives free will if it means those trillions of lives get to keep living? Or is it more moral to allow those trillions of lives absolute autonomy to make any decision they want, even if it means guaranteed destruction?

[09:13] Those are debates we are going to see come into play in Doomsday between characters like Loki, Steve Rogers, and Dr. Doom. And I think they'll all answer. And I think we as the audience will struggle as well. And I want to say

[09:27] that I am glad that despite the Loki series doing a lot of major setup for a movie that isn't happening anymore, Avengers the Kang Dynasty, I still think it's going to be a really important show to have seen, not as required viewing to

[09:39] understand or appreciate Doomsday, but I think you'll appreciate Doomsday even more and Loki's role in the film if you have seen his series. The Loki series is also what introduced us to the TVA. So, come Doomsday when we likely see the TVA

[09:53] attacked by Dr. Doom, it's going to hit even harder. And look, while Loki was already a beloved favorite, this series really, really redefined his character. And I think just overall, it is a great show to have seen going into Doomsday.

[10:06] this makes sense. He's in Doomsday after all. And his movie is the only other place to meet his character before watching Doomsday. It's also in that film that we're introduced to the 10 rings that I think once upon a time

[10:19] likely had a much bigger role to play in this saga when Kang Dynasty was the plan. But I still think the 10 rings will come into play as an artifact perhaps that Doom is interested in. And they've got to address that beacon.

[10:31] Spider-Man No Way Home, the very first big multiverse movie of this saga, which introduced the concept of the multiverse and variant lives to the masses by bringing together all three liveaction Spider-Man and using the multiverse as

[10:46] the how. Now, I am not going to go into leaks here, but I will just say this. There are characters and situations that happen in Spider-Man No Way Home that I think will be pretty good to be at least aware of and perhaps refreshed on going

[10:59] into Doomsday, but I'll leave that there. Next on the list, they have Black Panther Wakanda forever. This makes sense because it introduces us to Neymar and Talon, who we know will have a pretty decentsized role in Doomsday.

[11:11] Plus, it explains why Shuri is now the Black Panther and Umbaku is the king of Wakanda. We then have Captain America: Brave New World. And I have to say, I'm on the list. I would think that Falcon and the Winter Soldier would have been a

[11:24] know, show Sam Wilson being Captain America, but also to show the struggles that he went through to become and be accepted as Captain America. That show also gives us a lot of time with Bucky, who will also have a big role to play in

[11:37] hand, I mean, yeah, it does introduce the idea that Sam is going to like form an Avengers team, and we also have the postredit scene with the leader. We'll protect this place from the others. >> But I will say this is the first one on

[11:51] the list that does kind of have me perplexed as to why it's on here. Now, Wolverine. This movie does a lot of work establishing the idea of the multiverse and timelines and variants in the TVA for a larger audience. And this movie

[12:05] also helped to introduce the idea of entire worlds, entire timelines dying. And of course, it's no secret at this point that Deadpool and this particular version of Wolverine will be appearing in Doomsday. You don't do what they did

[12:17] at Comic-Con with Reynolds showing up in costume to ask if he can be in the movie. And you damn sure don't do what they did at D23 with Hugh Jackman doing the same thing if they aren't in the movie. Deadpool and Wolverine also gives

[12:29] at the end of time. And we also get to hear Cassandra Nova talk about the idea of destroying the entire multiverse and leaving nothing but the void. I'm going to use your little time ripper and I'm going to destroy this universe and the

[12:43] going to destroy this universe and the next until all that's left is the >> and I think that's exactly how Doomsday is going to end. I think we will see the multiverse collapse and Dr. Doom's battle world from the comics which is a

[12:56] collection of worlds morphed into one. I think it will be the void at the end of time. This place outside of the multiverse. I think that is where Dr. like a kingdom and a collection of burrows in this vast infinite void. Then

[13:10] multiverse of madness. This movie introduces the concept of dream walking. I think that will prove to be a very important piece to Dr. Doom, a sorcerer, conducting his plan throughout this movie. Multiverse of madness also

[13:23] introduced us to incursions and the very tragic way to survive them, which is destroying the other universe before you both collide and therefore both die. you incursion, caused the annihilation of another universe.

[13:37] >> That will be a major piece of the plot in Doomsday with official reports having already indicated that this is a challenge that the X-Men have faced in the events leading up to Doomsday in their world. And I'm sure it will be a

[13:49] topic of discussion between all of our heroes. And hopefully we'll get to hear >> There's also, of course, this postredit scene featuring Clea, >> you caused an incursion, and we're going to fix it. I think that scene right

[14:02] there will explain where Doctor Strange has been and what he's been up to all of this time and what his secret role in Doomsday could be. Next, we have Thunderbolts. Arguably the best movie of the multiverse saga. That is until Brand

[14:14] it. This movie is important to watch because it introduces the team of new Avengers who all have pretty goodsized parts to play in Doomsday. I mean, we're in their new Avengers Tower, and I think it will be helpful to understand who

[14:27] these characters are and what their histories are and perhaps why Sam does not want them as part of his team. And there's also the Valentina of it all. important characters in Thunderbolts to get reacquainted with before going into

[14:41] Doomsday are Yolena and Bob the Century. I think they are both going to have Doomsday, so it's important that you know who they are. And then of course we have the Fantastic 4 First Steps which is the only other movie before Doomsday

[14:55] where you can meet this new cast of Fantastic 4 characters. Characters who will have significant roles to play in Avengers Doomsday. It's in First Steps where we also of course met Franklin and learn about his immense power and why he

[15:08] And this most recent trailer for Doomsday, it shows us a very personal and seemingly long history between Doom and the four Reed and Sue especially. So, I think it is important to watch first steps and know their characters so

[15:22] that when they do have like expositional scenes of dialogue detailing what they know about Doom. We know the place that they are coming from because you've seen characters well. And hey guys, speaking of prepping for Doomsday, be sure to

[15:50] support. All right, now I want to really quickly talk about some projects that I'm quite frankly surprised aren't on this list. And look, I I understand that you can't put every damn show and movie on the list because then it defeats the

[16:03] purpose of even having a list and would get to a point where it'd be easier to watch. And also, let me just say, I don't think you need to watch anything post Endgame in order to watch Doomsday. I think this movie was designed to be

[16:16] able to be watched by fans who haven't really seen much of anything since Avengers Endgame. Now, having said that, I think if you have seen the other Multiverse Saga, especially the ones that are on their list, you are in a

[16:29] position where perhaps you will enjoy and appreciate Doomsday even more. But I this list should be viewed as homework or required viewing in order to go see Doomsday. So with that disclaimer, here are some projects that I would have

[16:43] thought would be on this list. First, X-Men: Days of Future Past. One, it's just a really great movie, and it shows the X-Men messing with time, which leads to them resurrecting dead characters, and you would think that that would

[16:55] maybe come into play. It also shows the love between Xavier and Magneto, as well as the face turn of Mystique. Now, as far as missing MCU movies go, you would think that the Marvels, at least the postredit scene of the Marvels, might be

[17:08] the character of Monica Rambo, who I would assume is there with the X-Men and will have a role to play in Doomsday. Not a great movie, but it does introduce

[17:20] resurrected through the power of eternity, and who has a part to play in could all be explained in like a brief piece of dialogue. So yeah, those are a interesting they're not on the list, whereas some other ones are
