Luck vs Strategy on Twitch
45sChallenges the common belief that luck is essential for Twitch growth, sparking debate among streamers.
▶ Play ClipThe video presents a four-quadrant framework for achieving success on Twitch, arguing that luck is not a necessary component if streamers focus on the right strategies. The host, Harris Heller, breaks down the elements of a successful stream into quality, engagement, discoverability, and purpose, emphasizing that most streamers neglect the latter two, which are crucial for long-term growth.
The host challenges the common belief that luck is essential for Twitch growth, stating that business success is not based on luck but on strategy. He acknowledges that early Twitch streamers benefited from the platform's growth, but now that Twitch is established, strategic approaches are necessary.
The host introduces a four-quadrant framework for Twitch success: top-left (quality stream setup), bottom-left (engagement/interactivity), top-right (discoverability via social media), and bottom-right (the 'why' or driving purpose). He notes that most streamers focus only on the left side, which requires luck, while the right side guarantees success but is harder and takes longer.
The first quadrant covers equipment like camera, microphone, lights, PC, and software (OBS, bitrate). It can be set up in a day with a budget of around $1000. The host advises not to dwell on this quadrant as it requires no creativity or individuality.
The second quadrant involves conversational streaming, reading chat, alerts, overlays, and expressing personality. It evolves over time and can be set up in a week with a few hundred dollars. However, these elements create entertainment but not lifelong fans.
The third quadrant focuses on YouTube and Twitter as primary platforms for discoverability. Twitter is shareable, while YouTube is browsable. Creating content for these platforms takes a year or more and requires creativity and dedication. Successful examples include the host's '50 Tips' video that gained half a million views and drove traffic to his Twitch channel.
The fourth quadrant is about the core reason behind streaming, similar to business strategies of companies like Apple and Tesla. Streamers should define their purpose (e.g., impacting lives, making people feel a certain way) and align their actions with it. This quadrant takes the longest and requires deep thought.
The host shares his own 'why': to help gamers understand their value and be on the progressive side of the gaming industry. He gives away alerts and designs for free because he believes streamers will figure it out eventually, and he wants to be part of that progress.
The host concludes that focusing on the right two quadrants (discoverability and purpose) will almost guarantee success on Twitch, but they are hard and time-consuming. Most streamers are impatient and only focus on the left side, which requires luck.
Success on Twitch is not about luck but about strategically investing time and effort into discoverability and defining a clear purpose. Streamers who neglect these aspects will struggle to grow, while those who embrace them can achieve sustainable success.

11:15[00:01] businessperson says you know what made my business successful luck it just doesn't happen luck is not a part of the business strategy so why everyone says you have to get lucky to grow on switch is beyond me actually that's not true I
[00:16] I'll get into in a little bit but today I want to talk about the social media success formula I don't like using the word formula it's very impersonal but talk about the social media success formula specifically for twitch and by
[00:33] the way this video is sponsored by lasting there this video is sponsored by last night oh my gosh what what's your password I it's the truth is there is no
[00:46] password capital T comma after is period at the end you type that in every time hold on let me grab my wallet what's your banking password 1 2 3 4 5 wait why do you need to know my bank password you have all these memorized individually I
[01:01] mean most of them I forget the ones I don't use very often dude why do you do what it's not safe to reuse passwords on different sites no I mean why aren't you using LastPass you memorize one master password and it stores all your
[01:15] usernames and passwords that even auto fills them on all the sites that you use plus less yes last paths the app that you are literally doing an ad for right that's cool and all but what am I gonna do if I need to sign in on an app on my
[01:29] phone dude it's 2019 they have an iOS and an Android app and all your devices it even auto fills in your mobile apps that you use how many how many apps what know how many passwords all of them
[01:42] unlimited passwords no well okay that oh wow it's free yeah so maybe just start another password because I may have just wait what yep I want you're done doing that I'd be
[01:57] cards thanks man Thank You LastPass for thanks man Thank You LastPass for sponsoring this video
[02:13] like this is gonna come across as a really narcissistic to talk about which is so strange to me business strategy education is available everywhere even like social media business strategies Gary Vee wrote the book crush it all
[02:26] about success in your business on social media back in 2009 but for some reason you talk about twitch you mentioned any kind of strategy involved or say that luck isn't really necessary and everybody gets upset so here's my take
[02:39] is involved in twitch oh and I totally forgot to do the intro welcome back to Harris Heller I'm extreme daddy and today and well I already told you what twitch is still a relatively new platform even though I know it doesn't
[02:52] feel like it it's still relatively new and by that I mean the og streamers are still for the most part the most relevant streamers streamers like ninja summit og are still at the top and they were there from the very beginning these
[03:07] streamers started from back in the justin.tv days and had no idea that this was going to blow up into a very lucrative career and now suddenly they're making huge sums of money and if that happened to me yet I probably say I
[03:20] got lucky too but to me looking at this situation I don't think it's the streamer becoming successful that was the actual element of luck here I think twitch blew up and then the streamers who were taking advantage of that new
[03:33] platform were the ones that rose to the top just like anyone would be able to predict and now it's spin year long enough it's proven its value as a like any other social media platform and talk about the strategies that it takes
[03:46] to succeed on it just like any other platform so here's what we're gonna do thinking about how I wanted to do this I am going to break down literally everything there is to know into four basic parts four quadrants of success on
[04:02] fitting it into one video I'm gonna cover each one in very broad strokes that's the whole point of every other video on this channel is to get into the will go from the beginning of your career to the pinnacle of your career so
[04:17] quadrants the top left quadrant first quadrant of this stream is the one that I get asked almost every single question about it's the one on the forefront of everybody's mind this is how you make a quality stream things
[04:30] camera to your microphone to your lights to your PC to even some of the software like OBS running the encoder properly getting your bitrate set all these things create that professional high quality stream that a lot of streamers
[04:45] are ambitious of it takes a little bit of saving it takes a little bit of money but the bottom line is this in terms of planning and mental capacity and frankly if you had the budget if you had $1000 you could get this entire quadrant set
[04:59] up in one day you can go out buy the camera microphone lights the things you need and set it up in a day this should not be the top priority on your mind the equipment that you want put that list somewhere you can easily access and
[05:14] get it out of your brain this is a one day quadrant that requires zero creativity zero thought and zero individuality I mean it's important to get it right but do it in the day the quadrant right below that is your
[05:26] engagement the interactivity between the viewers and your stream this is things like the streamer being conversational and reading the chat answering questions this is things like alerts and overlays expressing personality and when someone
[05:38] subscribes in the chat it pops up on the stream in a fun and engaging way this is your career and this is going to evolve over time you're gonna get better at gonna understand how you want your alerts to more reflect your brand this
[05:55] gross I mean just like the first quadrant does is you upgrade equipment you have the budget of a couple hundred bucks you find either an artist friend or someone on Fiverr you can get this entire quadrant done in a week there's a
[06:10] reason on this quadrant plane that I went down instead of going across and the reason for that is this side encapsulate s' almost every single streamer have the five million plus broadcasters on Twitch almost every
[06:22] single one of them is stuck on this left side and most of them will never leave and I want to ask you this question of all the things that we've discussed here how many of these things are going to create lifelong fans these
[06:37] things will create entertainment sure but lifelong diehard fans that are gonna stick with you for years any of those things going to create those by the way answer's no but almost every single streamer never leaves this side and
[06:50] frankly if that's the only thing that you're doing yes luck is going to have to be involved so let's move over to the right side the other entire half of the equation that gets ignored the top right quadrant is your discoverability this is
[07:05] social media the two top that I would recommend our YouTube and Twitter that seems to be the place where most users on Twitch also spend some time on there's the most cross-pollination there there are also two great platforms for
[07:19] getting noticed Twitter is a very shareable platform you've seen a lot of big users like American Dad blow up on Twitch because they make hilarious Twitter videos you know what's going on in here what are we playing tonight
[07:32] mean by I didn't mean anything by it I was just asking collectively why okay if you and Twitter is an incredibly shareable platform if you post something that's relatable if you post something that your Twitter followers connect to
[07:47] they're gonna hit the retweet button and it's just a big old spider web of people viewers suddenly a video gets hundreds of thousands of views because it's other hand is not so much a shareable platform as it is a browsable platform
[08:02] recommended videos and clicking recommended videos and if you get a people watch it through to the end maybe they comment a lot on a YouTube and it's gonna push it in everybody's feed and this is the way that this
[08:16] channel and my twitter up my 50 tips video I made a couple months ago got pushed into everybody's recommended feed and now it has about half a million views and because it was solid content and I pushed my twitch channel in the
[08:28] video it pushed a lot of people over to my twitch channel and I got partnered out into some other social media platforms Instagram and Facebook while not as heavily used twitch users there's still great
[08:42] still a good chunk of cross-pollination coming from those to this quadrant is incredibly difficult though not only does it take a a lot more thought and creativity and learning new skills that
[08:54] twitch streamer but it also takes a lot of time I get a lot of people asking me because I've I pushed in my videos make twitch chat in the last K what kind of video should I make and at the end of
[09:08] the day I can't be the one to create your YouTube channel I can't create think of content that can make themselves if you're gonna come up with videos you're gonna decide you don't like it or doesn't work you're gonna try
[09:20] you're gonna try another idea you're gonna go through a good solid dozen ideas before you find one that sticks for you and it grows whereas the last two quadrants took a day and a week this one can take a year or more it doesn't
[09:36] I've probably gone through five or six different themes on my youtube channels before finally having one take off on its own like this one I've been making YouTube videos for about 13 years it takes time it takes dedication but if
[09:50] you can utilize other more discoverable platforms the traffic generated to your channel you can get more followers in a single day than you got the previous year I do and the very last quadrant is one that a very small handful of twitch
[10:04] streamers are actually considering while I mean it's it's at the core of business strategies and even a lot of YouTube channels and that is what is the driving force the reason behind what you do what is your why there are entire books
[10:19] written on why people are fanatics for Apple or why Tesla is making huge waves right now even though just making cars people who don't have a Tesla are huge Tesla fans because they believe in the product they believe in Elon Musk those
[10:36] businesses have a why if you can take some time and think to yourself about you do are you doing it because you like playing video games are you doing it because you want to impact people's lives how do you want to impact those
[10:49] reach those people what are the things you want to make them feel are you doing the things that make those people feel that way if you bit and look at yourself from a different perspective you're going to be
[11:02] able to come up with those things but it's going to take a very very long time and it's gonna take a lot of thought and this is why I say don't dwell on the left side of those quadrants because it's going to distract you from doing
[11:15] these really important things I mean this this video and everything I do is this this video and everything I do is my why I see a huge shift coming in eSports and the gaming industry right now I see a lot of gamers not
[11:28] potential value is I see a lot of organizations taking advantage of streamers I see a lot of brands and advertisers really selling streamers short I also see a lot of streamers not creating enough value on their channels
[11:43] to work with brands at a high value as the industry moves forward the content are gonna recognize how much they're worth that's why I don't hold on to any had to know why I share all of my alerts and designs and everything for free
[11:58] because you guys are going to figure it out eventually with or without me and if I can be an integral piece in that puzzle we all win my why and the reason I do what I do is to be on the progressive side of an industry that is
[12:12] inevitably is going to progress I want to be a person who helps gamers understand what their value is because I've seen it happen on vine and on snapchat and on YouTube I was there for all of that it's going to happen on
[12:24] Twitch this is why luck doesn't have to be involved but lots of gamers will still say that it is this right column these right two quadrants when done these right two quadrants when done properly will all but guarantee your
[12:37] success on Twitch they are also incredibly hard and they take an incredibly long time and twitch streamers are impatient they want to want to spend any time on the right side of these quadrants and if you only spend
[12:51] your time and energy on the left side yeah you're gonna need a lot of luck channel in the discord we can discuss these things discuss ideas discuss the things that you need with other streamers get some extra minds on it to
[13:05] discord is down in the description below also if you do have any other questions for me about the stuff I do stream every Monday Wednesday Friday evening link twitch stream I know it's overwhelming to look at the daunting task of that
[13:18] youtubers had to do it's something that every successful business has had to do and if you only spend time on the left side of these quadrants I can promise you it'll take a lot longer to grow and will be a lot more frustrating so I hope
[13:34] this helped I hope you take this advice to heart and as always happy streaming where do you go where'd he go it's gonna be right here
