6:49[00:00] Hello, Simon Cardi from IGN here at
[00:02] Summer GameFest with Michael Hy and we
[00:04] have seen a little sneak peek at
[00:07] Resident Evil Veronica. I say a sneak
[00:09] peek. We've not seen anything anyone
[00:11] else hasn't seen in the world apart from
[00:13] that trailer. Are you a big Code
[00:15] Veronica fan? I am on record saying that
[00:18] Code Veronica was my favorite classic
[00:20] Resident Evil. Uh but my opinion has
[00:23] changed as I re have revisited them and
[00:24] all that, but I do think that this is
[00:26] the one that needs the most revisiting.
[00:29] I guess you could say from that classic
[00:31] Resident Evil pantheon, I suppose. And
[00:34] the fact that Code Veronica ties into
[00:36] the Raccoon City saga is going to help
[00:38] connect what we do have for the more
[00:41] modern remakes right now. So, I do think
[00:43] it's an interesting project and I think
[00:45] this is something that is needed. And uh
[00:47] we had a Q&A with the producer and
[00:50] nothing else was shown behind closed
[00:52] doors. Like you said, the trailer that
[00:54] was shown at the Summer GameFest
[00:56] showcase is what all the all we saw.
[00:59] It's all what you have saw saw back
[01:01] there, but we did get some questions in.
[01:03] And so we have a lot of new information
[01:05] about Veronica, even though it hasn't
[01:07] been like physically shown to us.
[01:09] >> Yeah, I think one of maybe the biggest
[01:10] headlines is that tease we were shown
[01:12] was very modern Resident Evil in as much
[01:15] as it was first person. I was like, "Oh,
[01:17] are they doing Veronica in third
[01:18] person?" But no, had it confirmed this
[01:20] is a completely third person game like
[01:23] the original. And it's interesting that
[01:26] the teaser is in first person, but we're
[01:27] going to play the game in third person,
[01:29] but it makes sense because Veronica is
[01:32] quite actionheavy at times. And you kind
[01:33] of want that perspective, I think.
[01:35] >> Yeah, absolutely. And I think, yeah,
[01:37] there was a perception like when I first
[01:39] saw the trailer, I was thinking, "Oh,
[01:41] this is going to be like Resident Evil 7
[01:43] or it's going to be be like um Grace's
[01:45] sections in Reququum and they're going
[01:47] to do more of the horror elements." And
[01:49] I was like, "That's not really what Code
[01:51] Veronica was originally about." And then
[01:53] so we asked the producer straight up
[01:55] like, "Is this a first person or a third
[01:57] person game?" He said, "It's a third
[01:58] person game. It's action focused. It's
[02:00] from the team that worked on Resident
[02:02] Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil 4
[02:04] remake." So, there is a bit of a I think
[02:06] there might have been a misunderstanding
[02:08] there if you haven't uh gotten this
[02:10] information, which is what we're here to
[02:11] give y'all. But he did say that, you
[02:14] know, think of this closer to Resident
[02:16] Evil 2 remake. This does star Claire
[02:18] Redfield and she was playable in
[02:20] Resident Evil 2 remake. So, he said
[02:23] think of that, but there are going to be
[02:25] new gameplay elements on top of that. Of
[02:26] course, he wasn't at liberty to talk
[02:28] about them quite yet cuz it's still very
[02:29] early on, but we should expect that kind
[02:31] of game. Yeah, I didn't have it
[02:33] confirmed if dual wielding is back, but
[02:35] it sounds like they're going to kind of
[02:37] they're going to evolve the Resident
[02:38] Evil formula again. You know, like in
[02:40] Reququum, Leon can do things he couldn't
[02:42] do in four. So, they're going to take
[02:44] that with these characters as well.
[02:46] Obviously, might not be as proficient in
[02:48] combat as Leon because who is?
[02:50] >> Yeah.
[02:50] >> But, you know, I'm I'm intrigued to see
[02:52] what they're going to do with this one.
[02:53] And the producer did say in my session
[02:55] as well, he very much treats Code Vernon
[02:58] like one of the mainline games. It's
[02:59] essentially part of the main story
[03:01] despite not having a number. So, it's
[03:03] good to see that this is getting like
[03:04] the full remake treatment that we've
[03:07] seen in the past. And it all looks very
[03:09] exciting to me.
[03:11] >> Yeah. I mean, like to me, it's exciting
[03:13] because again, I've I I remember playing
[03:15] this game on the original Dreamcast and
[03:18] uh there are a lot of things that I
[03:19] don't necessarily remember about it
[03:21] because I played it when I was much too
[03:23] young to be playing Resident Evil games
[03:24] for sure. But you had mentioned to me
[03:26] that uh there are some pretty
[03:28] questionable elements with the story and
[03:29] characters in Code Veronica. And
[03:31] obviously in the modern day, you
[03:33] probably want to revisit those things
[03:34] and your group was able to get a
[03:36] question about that, right?
[03:37] >> Yes. Obviously, I don't want to spoil it
[03:39] cuz for some people, you know, this will
[03:42] be the first time they see this story,
[03:43] but there are elements of, you know,
[03:46] there's gender politics at play in the
[03:47] original and we obviously live in a
[03:49] different time now, so they may have to
[03:51] adjust how they approach that story.
[03:52] They did say they're still obviously in
[03:54] development on this game. So, they
[03:55] haven't actually locked in what they're
[03:58] doing with these topics yet. So, they
[04:00] want to go deeper, they said, into, you
[04:02] know, the mindset of some of the
[04:04] characters. Maybe explain what's going
[04:06] on with them a bit more rather than just
[04:09] present some characters as,
[04:12] for lack of a better word, something to
[04:14] fear, if you know what I mean. So, I'd
[04:16] be interested to see how they handle
[04:17] that. they kind of have to approach it
[04:19] in a different way, I think, for it to
[04:21] be viable in 2027 when this game is
[04:24] supposedly coming out. So, we'll be
[04:25] interested to see what they do with
[04:27] that. At least they very much sounded
[04:30] like they're taking that feedback on
[04:32] board and looking into what they can do
[04:34] with the story.
[04:35] >> But that makes sense because Resident
[04:37] Evil Veronica dropping the code
[04:39] Veronica. If if you're wondering why
[04:41] they dropped code, uh the producer said
[04:43] that they're trying to get in line with
[04:44] the naming conventions of all the
[04:46] previous Resident Evils in the modern
[04:48] sense where you have like Resident Evil
[04:50] 7 was Biohazard, Resident Evil 8 was
[04:52] village, Resident Evil 9 was Reququum.
[04:54] So, uh they're following that logic
[04:56] right there. Uh so, but it is an
[04:57] adaptation of Code Veronica. It's like a
[05:00] reimagining of it. I I'm getting the
[05:02] impression that, you know, when you play
[05:04] RE2 remake, RE4 remake, they're pretty
[05:07] close to what those original games were
[05:09] about when it comes to story. Of course,
[05:11] there's some tweaking there. Um, not
[05:13] necessarily retconing, but just like a
[05:15] more modern vision of what those uh
[05:16] stories are and tying them closer
[05:18] together, but I think that I'm under the
[05:21] impression that Veronica is going to
[05:23] have a little bit more creative freedom
[05:24] or creative liberties with what that
[05:26] story was and how it's going to tie into
[05:27] everything else.
[05:28] >> Yeah. I also wonder if they're going to
[05:30] play into a bit more what they did with
[05:31] recre as well cuz the original Keronica
[05:34] very much a game of two halves as one
[05:36] character then you play as another. Will
[05:37] they kind of switch between characters
[05:39] more in this one and kind of tell it in
[05:41] a bit more of an interesting like way to
[05:44] do of how it's maybe not so linear this
[05:47] time around. Be interesting to see. But
[05:49] like we say at this point we really are
[05:51] just guessing.
[05:51] >> Yeah. We're we're we're kind of uh going
[05:54] off of just what we what we had in a
[05:56] brief conversation with the producer and
[05:58] from what we've seen in the trailer. But
[06:00] um yeah, I mean my thought was that they
[06:03] would do a sort of recu thing where you
[06:05] have first person horror style and then
[06:07] you have third person action style, but
[06:09] that's that that is not the choice.
[06:11] >> No, no, you were wrong.
[06:12] >> Yeah, I was completely wrong about that.
[06:15] Um, one thing that was funny when we,
[06:17] someone in our group also asked the
[06:18] producer about the rev, you know, being
[06:21] Veronica, does that mean this is the
[06:24] actual Resident Evil 5? He mentioned
[06:26] that everybody in every session asked
[06:27] the same question. But that's
[06:29] interesting because of the continuation
[06:31] of the Raccoon City saga like like we
[06:34] had mentioned earlier. Um, and the way
[06:36] they tuck in the Roman numeral into
[06:39] Resident Evil, like the title itself
[06:41] with the V I I and whatever with Village
[06:44] as well. Uh, they're trying to be clever
[06:46] with it. They're kind of being cheeky
[06:47] with this as well, but the producer did
[06:49] say that that is not the case. There's
[06:51] there's being playful.
[06:52] >> So, there is still a chance of a
[06:54] Resident Evil 5 remake on the table, I
[06:56] think. Tough one to tough one to go
[06:58] with, but hey, we're going Code Veronica
[07:00] first, which to be honest, I think a lot
[07:01] of people would prefer.
[07:03] >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And like with the
[07:05] direction that they're taking Resident
[07:07] Evil, whether it's a new game or a
[07:09] remake, I think all of these kind of
[07:10] fall in line. When you got to Resident
[07:12] Evil 5, it became a very different
[07:13] thing. And so maybe some point they
[07:16] should revisit it. Um, but for now, I'm
[07:18] really excited that we're getting Code
[07:20] Veronica, aka Resident Evil Veronica, in
[07:23] some form. So, uh, yeah,
[07:26] >> hopefully we see more soon. They said
[07:27] 2027. We don't really know when next
[07:29] year we're going to play this game, but
[07:31] yeah, that's kind of all we really know
[07:32] about Resident Evil Veronica here at
[07:34] Summer GameFest. Keep a lot to IGN where
[07:37] we'll probably be talking about Resident
[07:38] Evil for the rest of time.
[08:17] Don't move,
[08:19] Claire Redfield.
