Definition of Rumination

Psychology defines the constant replaying, reanalyzing, or rethinking of life events as 'rumination,' which is common in chronic anxiety and depression.

[01:59]
Solution Through Mindfulness

Mindfulness meditation offers a solution to rumination by training the conscious mind to move towards productive and resourceful states of emotional detachment.

[02:57]
Posture and Initial Awareness

The guide instructs listeners to find a comfortable posture, close their eyes, and bring awareness to the breath, noticing the rise and fall of the chest and lower stomach.

[04:30]
Body Sensation Awareness

Participants are guided to notice sensations of warmth or coolness in different body parts, including hands, feet, arms, and legs, without judgment.

[11:52]
Slowing the Breath

Listeners are invited to slow down their breath to a comfortable rate, making the next breath in a little slower and the breath out a little longer.

[15:53]
Observing Thoughts Non-Judgmentally

The meditation guides participants to observe thoughts, judgments, or evaluations that arise without trying to control or change them, simply allowing them to pass.

[22:18]
Identity Beyond Thoughts

The session emphasizes that 'who you are is so much more than simply your thoughts,' using the metaphor of thoughts as shooting stars passing across a clear night sky.

[27:33]
Power of Mindful Breathing

The basics of mindful breath are highlighted as powerful for returning conscious awareness to the breath, offering calm acknowledgements to thoughts as they arise and fade.

[31:45]
Concluding Options

Listeners can choose to drift off to sleep or remain awake and alert, calmly observant, and can return to a fully alert state whenever they choose.

The meditation concludes by reinforcing the practice of observing thoughts from a detached, calm perspective, allowing listeners to return to their day or sleep feeling rested and re-energized.

[28:16] arise you will now offer to those thoughts your calmest acknowledgements just as if a wise older teacher might appreciate and observe the teacher might appreciate and observe the youthful energy of a small

[28:36] again as the energies of those very same thoughts fade or burn out or

[28:50] disappear and you allow those thoughts to so easily continue passing by offering no resistance simply allowing those thoughts to simply allowing those thoughts to disappear and Fade to wherever they will

[29:59] moment understanding you are more than your

[30:14] reactions and in this very real way there is this very real part of you that continues on simply observing and watching and witnessing

[30:41] and you are easily and naturally able to return your awareness always back to the

[30:55] breath making the choice to remain present in the present coming back to the breath breathing

[31:45] for as long as you wish as the background to this recording will continue for some time and if you're listening to this as you wish to Drift Off to Sleep and you can further relax your conscious
