Sponsorship vs Affiliate: What's the Difference?
47sClarifies a common confusion between two monetization methods, highly educational for aspiring creators.
▶ Play ClipThis video provides a comprehensive overview of how YouTube sponsorships work, from initial outreach and negotiation to content creation, review, and final payment. The creator explains the process using her own experience, emphasizing the importance of planning and timelines.
The video begins with a welcome and a teaser for a previous video about management teams. The creator states that today's focus is on the timeline and process of setting up a sponsorship, specifically for YouTube videos.
A sponsorship is a flat-rate payment from a company for an ad slot within your content. This is distinct from affiliate marketing, which is commission-based.
Sponsorships can begin with a company or manager reaching out to you, or you reaching out to them. Having a brand reach out is preferable as they already have a budget and are looking for influencers.
Before a contract is signed, there is significant negotiation about price, deliverables (e.g., YouTube video, Instagram stories), and what is included. The creator highlights the value of a management team in handling this process.
After negotiation, a contract is reviewed and signed by both parties. The creator personally reviews all contracts, but management can also do this. Changes are discussed before finalization.
The first step in creating content is developing a concept and getting it approved by the brand. This involves proposing a title, outline, and how the sponsorship will be integrated into the video.
For YouTube, you decide the length of the ad (e.g., 30-second shout-out, 4-minute clip). Brands provide talking points and things to mention or avoid.
The creator demonstrates a sponsored ad for Epidemic Sound, a platform for royalty-free music and sound effects. She explains its features, including mood-based searching and a 'find similar' option.
After creating the content, it goes through a review process. The creator emphasizes the need to plan ahead, as sponsored videos often require filming two weeks in advance to allow time for edits and approvals.
The creator uploads the final video to YouTube as unlisted, adds the appropriate title, description, and FTC disclaimer, and sends it to the brand for approval. Once approved, it is scheduled to go live.
Payment typically occurs after the content goes live, with terms like net 30, net 60, or net 90. The creator notes that her management team handles invoicing and payment collection.
"The title accurately reflects the content, which is a detailed beginner's guide to the sponsorship process, though it focuses more on the creator's personal experience than a general overview."

10:48[00:00] hello you guys what is up welcome back
[00:01] to my channel
[00:03] we've got a matcha i hope that you loved
[00:05] last week's video
[00:06] i was so excited to create it editing it
[00:10] was a heck of a process but like the
[00:12] final product i was so incredibly proud
[00:14] i felt like it was such helpful
[00:15] information
[00:16] and if you guys did not watch that video
[00:18] i really recommend that you watch that
[00:19] first because that talks about
[00:20] management teams why i have a manager
[00:23] the benefits of having a manager
[00:24] how payment works like how do they get
[00:26] paid and then how do i get paid with
[00:28] sponsorships it's just so incredibly
[00:30] good it's definitely long so if you got
[00:32] some patience
[00:33] stick with it but it is so so incredibly
[00:35] informative so today
[00:36] let me take a sip today we are going to
[00:39] be talking about
[00:40] how sponsorships work in terms of the
[00:43] timeline
[00:44] setting up a sponsorship actually
[00:45] creating the content getting it reviewed
[00:47] and just like the whole entire process
[00:49] until we get the finished product
[00:51] of you guys actually seeing the video or
[00:53] the instagram photo instagram story
[00:54] whatever it is that is sponsored
[00:56] specifically in this video i'm gonna
[00:58] talk about youtube videos because that's
[01:00] what i have experience on
[01:01] and that's mainly my audience here is
[01:03] filled with a lot of youtubers so let's
[01:05] just go ahead and get into it
[01:12] [Music]
[01:14] sponsorships i feel like they are just
[01:17] this giant
[01:18] mystery that not a lot of people talk
[01:20] about and full transparency guys with
[01:22] every sponsorship that i do
[01:24] i do sign a contract and within there it
[01:26] does say what i can and can't talk about
[01:28] and there are certain areas that i can't
[01:30] discuss such as how much i get paid per
[01:32] sponsorship
[01:33] not going to be talking about that in
[01:34] this video and if you have no idea what
[01:36] a sponsorship is a company will pay you
[01:37] a flat rate to have an ad slot within
[01:39] your content and this is totally
[01:41] different from affiliate marketing so if
[01:43] you've ever heard me talk about that
[01:44] before
[01:45] with affiliate marketing you will get a
[01:46] custom trackable link if someone clicks
[01:48] on that link and completes a successful
[01:50] sale then you will get paid it is
[01:52] commission based compared to with
[01:54] sponsorships yes it can
[01:55] include affiliate marketing but you get
[01:57] paid a flat rate to have a specific ad
[01:59] slot within your content
[02:01] just from an upper level how the heck do
[02:03] sponsorships work so from the very
[02:05] beginning either a company is going to
[02:06] reach out to you or your manager or you
[02:08] are going to reach out to a company
[02:10] about doing a possible sponsorship now
[02:12] we talked about this in the management
[02:14] video so definitely watch that but
[02:16] having a brand reach out to you is
[02:18] really preference because they already
[02:19] have a budget and they're already
[02:21] looking for influencers to sponsor so
[02:23] that's a really great way to get started
[02:24] with sponsorships and also get good
[02:26] sponsorships
[02:27] and from there guys there's a lot of
[02:30] negotiating there's a lot of talking
[02:32] before a contract is even signed so
[02:34] you're going to talk about the price
[02:36] what is included in the price so like
[02:37] what are you actually going to deliver
[02:39] the deliverables
[02:40] youtube video instagram stories
[02:42] instagram posts tick tock whatever it is
[02:44] you need to figure out what is going to
[02:46] be created how much is going to be
[02:48] charged for that as well as what is then
[02:50] going to go in the contract
[02:52] no contract is signed until all of the
[02:54] negotiation and that whole entire
[02:55] process is done
[02:56] and this is one of the reasons why i
[02:58] love having a management team so much
[02:59] because
[03:00] they do all of the negotiating they will
[03:02] come to me with what a brand is willing
[03:03] to pay or what
[03:04] they are trying to work out with a
[03:07] company and i will say yep that sounds
[03:09] good it fits into my content calendar or
[03:11] no i think we should actually be
[03:12] charging more or maybe we could also
[03:14] throw in this i
[03:15] am yes in the know of what is going on
[03:17] but i
[03:18] am not sending all of those emails back
[03:20] and forth and managers are just so
[03:22] incredibly great i am so thankful for
[03:24] mine
[03:24] i just i appreciate them and all of the
[03:27] planning that they have to do to make
[03:28] sponsorships even happen but
[03:30] once the negotiating is done everything
[03:32] is decided upon
[03:34] then we get a contract now during the
[03:36] negotiation phase
[03:37] you will see a contract ahead of time to
[03:39] know if there is anything that you want
[03:41] to change so i review all of my
[03:43] contracts myself
[03:44] and this is just personal preference for
[03:46] me you guys can have your management
[03:47] team do it just to cover my own butt
[03:49] guys like i like to look over all of my
[03:51] own contracts so
[03:52] i will review the contract if my
[03:53] management team or i have something that
[03:55] we want to change or even if the brand
[03:56] has something that they want to change
[03:58] we will discuss it before the final
[03:59] contract is given out and then it is
[04:01] signed by both parties so
[04:03] i will sign it as well as the company
[04:05] that i am working with and
[04:06] i feel like that beginning part is not
[04:09] the most fun
[04:10] and if you are setting up your
[04:11] sponsorships and your brand deals all on
[04:13] your own
[04:14] it is a decent amount of work that
[04:15] you're probably not used to if you've
[04:17] never done it before and it can take
[04:19] weeks it can take
[04:20] months to actually agree upon the terms
[04:23] of a sponsorship before it actually
[04:25] happens so
[04:25] that whole process is a lot
[04:29] and can't be ignored but i feel like
[04:31] what you guys probably want to know more
[04:32] about
[04:33] is actually the creating content side of
[04:35] things now you're probably so excited to
[04:37] start creating this content get that
[04:39] sponsored post so you can get
[04:40] paid in reality the first step is you
[04:43] need to come up with your concept your
[04:45] post idea
[04:46] and get it approved by the brand so
[04:47] depending on the brand they may ask for
[04:50] several different concepts and then they
[04:51] get to choose the one that they want to
[04:53] move forward with but most of the time
[04:54] what i do is i will come up with a
[04:56] general title or
[04:57] kind of like a rough draft of what i
[04:59] think the title is going to be and then
[05:00] some bullet points of what the video is
[05:02] going to be and how i'm going to include
[05:04] that sponsorship because you guys may
[05:06] notice with the sponsorships that i do
[05:08] all of them relate to the video it's not
[05:10] like i'm creating a video like this and
[05:11] then i'm talking about my skincare you
[05:13] know like that doesn't
[05:14] really flow it doesn't make sense so i
[05:16] try to
[05:17] come up with video ideas that are very
[05:19] specific to the sponsorships that it
[05:21] flows really well together
[05:23] and it just makes a lot of sense for not
[05:25] only you guys my audience
[05:26] and the brand that i'm working with it's
[05:28] going to be most powerful for them
[05:29] if i do that so i will send over the
[05:31] concept idea rough title
[05:33] outline some brands ask for a couple
[05:36] different options so i will do that and
[05:37] then once it is approved or
[05:39] we kind of work through like the final
[05:41] draft of what the video is going to be
[05:43] then it is finally time to start
[05:44] creating content but if we back it up a
[05:46] little bit
[05:47] when you decide what kind of content you
[05:50] are creating for the sponsored post so
[05:51] whether
[05:52] it's on instagram an instagram story
[05:53] real igtv you guys know all of the
[05:55] options available
[05:56] with youtube typically you decide on the
[05:58] length of time that the ad is going to
[06:00] be so is it going to be a 30 second
[06:02] shout out or is it going to be
[06:03] a four minute clip within your youtube
[06:05] video and that's really important for
[06:07] you to know
[06:07] typically brands will give you a list of
[06:10] talking points or certain things that
[06:11] they would like you to mention during
[06:13] the ad
[06:13] possibly things that they don't want you
[06:15] to mention during the ad and that is
[06:16] also helpful when you are coming up with
[06:18] what you are going to say
[06:20] i feel like you guys should have seen
[06:21] this coming but it's time to create the
[06:23] ad
[06:23] so this section of the video is
[06:25] sponsored by epidemic sound
[06:27] if you guys haven't heard me talk about
[06:28] epidemic sound before i honestly don't
[06:30] know where you've been i've been using
[06:31] this platform for
[06:32] well over a year to find all of my
[06:34] copyright free music as well as sound
[06:36] effects that i include within my youtube
[06:37] videos so if you are new to epidemic
[06:39] sound basically what it is it's a
[06:41] platform where you can find royalty-free
[06:42] music because we are not about getting
[06:44] copyrighted over here and
[06:46] their library is so easy to use and
[06:48] navigate if you know a general
[06:50] vibe that you want to go for for your
[06:51] piece of content so let's say it's
[06:53] sad or happy you can search based off of
[06:56] mood you can also search based off of
[06:57] genre
[06:58] and my favorite feature that i know i've
[07:00] shared before if you find a song that
[07:02] you like there's actually an option
[07:03] where you can click on just one little
[07:05] button
[07:05] and it's going to populate other similar
[07:07] songs so if you're like oh i like this
[07:09] song but it's not perfect you can click
[07:11] on the
[07:11] find similar option and it's going to
[07:14] generate a whole list
[07:15] of other songs you can check out so you
[07:17] can find the perfect perfect song for
[07:19] your piece of content but i know a lot
[07:20] of you guys are youtubers you have your
[07:22] own youtube channel and you would
[07:23] probably only need the personal plan
[07:25] which if you use the link included in
[07:26] the description bar down below you get a
[07:28] one month free trial so you can try it
[07:30] out
[07:30] if you like it then you can sign up for
[07:32] their personal plan which is just 15
[07:34] a month it's really not that much and
[07:35] you can cancel at any time if you get to
[07:37] a point where you do need to cancel that
[07:39] is an option for you and one of the
[07:40] questions i've gotten asked before is
[07:42] well what happens if i cancel am i then
[07:44] going to get copyrighted and the answer
[07:46] is
[07:47] no during that time when you were a
[07:48] member the pieces of content that you
[07:50] created those are considered white
[07:51] listed and they will not
[07:53] get copyright strikes it's just if you
[07:55] continue to use their music in the
[07:56] future then you may run into problems
[07:58] but if there are any of you out there
[07:59] that are freelancers or if you are
[08:01] creators that create content for clients
[08:03] the commercial plan may actually be more
[08:05] beneficial for you because you can get
[08:07] clearance based off of the content that
[08:09] you are creating for clients so when
[08:11] they
[08:11] upload it they are not getting copyright
[08:13] strikes so thank you so much to epidemic
[08:15] sound for sponsoring this video if you
[08:16] guys want to try it out for yourself
[08:18] definitely click the link in the
[08:19] description bar down below and get
[08:20] started with a one month free trial you
[08:22] can cancel at any time so you might as
[08:24] well
[08:24] give it a shot try it out thank me later
[08:27] with your piece of sponsored content
[08:28] created
[08:29] it's time for it to go in the review
[08:31] process and guys the timeline of
[08:33] sponsorships
[08:34] may be longer than you think and you may
[08:36] have actually heard of other youtubers
[08:38] sharing that like they had to miss an
[08:39] upload because the sponsored video was
[08:40] supposed to go live but it didn't get
[08:42] approval or something else
[08:43] you need to plan out your content ahead
[08:46] of time
[08:46] with sponsorships to make sure that you
[08:48] have enough time to go through that
[08:50] review process and if there
[08:51] are edits or corrections that you need
[08:53] to make and then get it reviewed again
[08:54] you need to make sure that you have that
[08:56] time there so typically i film my
[08:58] youtube videos one week in advance of
[09:00] them going live but with sponsored
[09:01] videos i typically have to film them two
[09:03] weeks ahead of time or even more
[09:05] depending on the agreed-upon timeline
[09:08] with the brand and this is something
[09:09] that you need to figure out ahead of
[09:10] time because you do not want to be at a
[09:12] point where
[09:13] you're scrambling to get the final edits
[09:15] done and have them reviewed
[09:17] so that the video can go live on your
[09:19] uploading schedule that's just not
[09:20] something you want to deal with so
[09:22] have a timeline figured out ahead of
[09:24] time create your content way in advance
[09:26] and what you're going to do is get it
[09:27] reviewed by the brand
[09:28] and depending on what platform or what
[09:31] kind of content it is the review process
[09:33] is going to be different but
[09:34] specifically for youtube videos what i
[09:36] do
[09:36] is i will take the edited video and
[09:38] upload it to youtube like i normally do
[09:40] when i want to schedule a youtube video
[09:42] to go live so i will add the appropriate
[09:44] title
[09:45] the final draft of what the title is
[09:46] going to be i will add in the
[09:48] description the things that i need to
[09:49] add so
[09:50] within the top fold is there anything
[09:51] that i need to include for that
[09:53] sponsorship such as a link or
[09:55] specific wording that the brand wants
[09:57] there i also need to include the ftc
[09:59] disclaimer because guys you need to
[10:01] disclose that your videos are sponsored
[10:03] within what you
[10:03] are saying but also in your description
[10:05] and you also need to check the box that
[10:07] says that your video includes a paid
[10:09] promotion so with all of that
[10:11] done i will then make the video unlisted
[10:13] i will send it over to my management
[10:15] team my management team will send it
[10:16] over to the brand the brand will
[10:18] come back with if it is approved and
[10:19] it's good to go or if there are some
[10:21] corrections that need to be made
[10:22] there are corrections that need to be
[10:23] made i then go back to final cut pro
[10:26] make the corrections upload it to
[10:27] youtube do the exact same thing make it
[10:29] unlisted send it back to the brand and
[10:31] if you
[10:32] go through that process a couple of
[10:33] times guys that is why you need to
[10:35] create your content ahead of time and
[10:37] you need to know that schedule so that
[10:38] you don't miss an upload because of a
[10:40] sponsored video
[10:41] not being approved in time so at that
[10:43] point i
[10:44] am done i will schedule the youtube
[10:46] video for the day that it is meant to go
[10:48] live
[10:48] and that's really it if you guys watch
[10:50] the video with my management team you
[10:52] would know that they actually send out
[10:54] all of my invoices collect
[10:55] payment and then i get paid through them
[10:57] the payment process doesn't happen until
[10:59] after the piece of content goes live and
[11:01] something you guys should know
[11:02] is that within your contract it is going
[11:04] to say how payment works and if it is
[11:06] net 30
[11:06] net 16 net 90 whatever it is you should
[11:09] know that because
[11:10] it could be a month two months three
[11:12] months before you actually get paid for
[11:13] your sponsorship so you think oh i'm
[11:15] gonna create a sponsored video and i'm
[11:16] gonna get paid that day or that week
[11:18] it's in your contract so you need to pay
[11:20] attention to that but that is it
[11:22] in terms of the timeline and just how
[11:24] sponsorships work in general obviously
[11:26] there's so much more that goes into
[11:27] sponsorships with pitching brands and
[11:29] the negotiating and even looking into
[11:31] contracts guys like there is a lot that
[11:33] goes into it but just in terms of the
[11:34] timeline
[11:35] and just like kind of bird's eye view
[11:38] i guess you could say of how
[11:39] sponsorships work that's it so i hope
[11:41] you guys like this video if you did make
[11:42] sure you give it a thumbs up and
[11:43] subscribe to my channel down below let
[11:45] me know what other topics you guys want
[11:46] me to talk about in terms of the
[11:48] business side of youtube getting paid on
[11:50] youtube whatever it is let me know and
[11:52] i'll create those for you guys but
[11:53] otherwise i'm out of here
[11:54] bye guys
[11:56] [Music]
[12:10] you
