Why Your YouTube Description Matters

▶ Play ClipThis video provides a step-by-step guide on structuring a YouTube description box to maximize views and channel growth. It covers what to include at the top, middle, and bottom, emphasizing SEO-rich content and strategic placement of links.
The description should have an attention-grabbing first sentence at the top, followed by a lead magnet link, a video summary, timestamps, a call to action, resources, social media links, a disclaimer, hashtags, and a closing statement.
Use AI to write a single sentence rich with SEO keywords that sounds human and explains what the video is about and who it helps.
Place the first sentence and a lead magnet link above the fold so they are visible without clicking 'more'. This ensures viewers see the link while watching.
After the lead magnet, add a brief summary of the video (bullet points or sentences) rich with keywords, explaining what viewers will learn.
Add timestamps to help viewers scan and jump to sections. They can be placed after the summary or lower down, as YouTube shows chapters on the video timeline anyway.
Include a clear CTA, such as 'Work with me', with a link to your website, coaching, or course.
List resources mentioned in the video, such as tools, free guides, or affiliate links, below the CTA.
Add social media handles and contact information below resources.
Include a legal disclaimer for affiliate links, e.g., 'Some links are affiliate links; I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.'
Add up to four niche-related hashtags and a closing statement like 'Don't forget to like and subscribe.'
In YouTube Studio, go to Settings > Upload defaults > Basic tab to prefill a template description that applies to all videos, then customize per video.
A well-structured YouTube description box with SEO-rich content, strategic placement of links, and clear calls to action can significantly boost views and engagement. Using a pre-filled template streamlines the process.

9:48[00:00] Are you maximizing your YouTube video
[00:02] description box? Because it's a powerful
[00:06] tool. And if you're not putting anything
[00:07] in the description or you're just
[00:08] copying and pasting random things in
[00:10] there, this video is going to walk you
[00:12] through what you should put in there,
[00:14] how you should structure it, in what
[00:15] order you should place those things in
[00:17] your description box so that you can get
[00:19] maximum results and grow your channel
[00:21] faster via the YouTube description box.
[00:24] If that sounds good to you, stick
[00:25] around.
[00:29] Okay. So, let's start by walking through
[00:30] a basic explanation or structural
[00:33] outline for your description box. Like
[00:35] what goes at the top, what goes at the
[00:37] middle, what goes at the bottom, right?
[00:38] Okay. So, the first thing you want to
[00:40] have in your description box is an
[00:41] attentiongrabbing first sentence. And I
[00:44] recommend having AI write this for you.
[00:47] And the reason I recommend having AI
[00:49] write it for you is because you want it
[00:50] to be very rich with SEO keywords that
[00:54] will help YouTube algorithm to
[00:56] understand what this video is about and
[00:58] who it's targeting. And the reason I say
[01:00] use AI like chat GPT, Gemini, Claude,
[01:03] AI, whatever to write this is so that it
[01:06] sounds human. But the reason I say this
[01:08] is because if you're trying to think of
[01:10] all the SEO keywords that you could pack
[01:12] in that first sentence and make it
[01:13] interesting, it's going to be very
[01:15] difficult to write that sentence. But if
[01:16] you have AI write that, it can create a
[01:19] very rich SEO keyword sentence that
[01:22] sounds human and makes sense. It's not
[01:24] just a bunch of keywords one after the
[01:26] other. So that's what I recommend. So
[01:27] the first part of your description box
[01:30] should be one sentence that's grabbing
[01:33] attention and that's saying what this
[01:34] video is about and who it can help. And
[01:37] there's this thing called above the fold
[01:40] on YouTube in the description box. So
[01:42] when someone is looking at your video,
[01:44] they see a little bit of characters like
[01:47] a one sentence, then it says click more
[01:49] to see the rest of the description,
[01:51] right? So they can watch your video and
[01:52] they see that little, you know, one-s
[01:54] sentence description and then they start
[01:55] to see the comments below it. And so the
[01:57] point of paying attention to the above
[01:59] the fold is that if you have any lead
[02:02] magnets, links to your coaching, links
[02:04] to your book, links to your courses,
[02:07] whatever it is, something that you want
[02:09] this person to to click on once they
[02:12] watch your videos, you want to have that
[02:13] above the fold. And so you'll have that
[02:15] one-s sentence description about the
[02:17] video rich with keywords. Then after
[02:20] that, you will list your lead magnet. So
[02:22] grab your guide here link. And the
[02:26] reason why we do it this way is so that
[02:28] if they're watching the video, that link
[02:30] will be shown and in your video you're
[02:32] talking about grab my guide below,
[02:34] they'll see that link without having to
[02:36] open up the description box. So it'll be
[02:38] visible on the underneath the video
[02:40] without having to do any extra work. So
[02:43] that is a really great place. However, I
[02:45] do not recommend starting with that link
[02:47] or just having all your links, you know,
[02:50] grab your guide, here's how to work with
[02:51] me, all these and there's like three
[02:53] links and there's nothing else. I
[02:54] wouldn't recommend that at all. I would
[02:56] recommend that you do the one sentence
[02:58] rich with keywords and then have a plug
[03:00] for whatever lead magnet you want with a
[03:01] little bit of link. And then when they
[03:04] open up the description box and can see
[03:06] the full description box, that's where
[03:07] we start to put more things in there.
[03:09] So, for example, the first sentence
[03:11] might be, "Want to skyrocket your
[03:13] YouTube views? Watch this." Then you
[03:15] say, "Grab your free guide clickable
[03:18] link." That's all you do for the very
[03:20] first part of the description. Next,
[03:21] you'll want to provide a summary of the
[03:23] video. It could be bullet points. It
[03:25] could be just another few sentences, but
[03:27] you really want it to be rich with
[03:28] keywords and also to explain what more
[03:31] they will get in the video beyond that
[03:32] one attentiongrabbing sentence. So, for
[03:35] example, in this video, you'll learn all
[03:38] about SEO and keywords for growing your
[03:40] YouTube channel. In addition, we'll also
[03:43] talk about basic strategy for succeeding
[03:46] on YouTube or something like that,
[03:47] right? So, it's a a small little
[03:48] description about the video itself and
[03:50] what they'll get inside the video. Now,
[03:52] there's two camps on this as well. Some
[03:54] people say don't give it all away
[03:56] because then they won't watch the video.
[03:58] I say give enough away so that you can
[04:01] include a lot of key words in the
[04:03] description like written in sentences,
[04:05] not just keyword stuffing. Do not
[04:07] keyword stuff your description. That is
[04:09] not looked highly upon through YouTube.
[04:11] Um, but create a few sentences about the
[04:13] video. And then after the description,
[04:15] it's helpful to add timestamps. So you
[04:18] want to create like little chapters
[04:19] about what the video is about. That's
[04:21] very helpful for people when they're
[04:22] scanning your video to see if they want
[04:24] to continue watching. So if they don't
[04:26] know what to expect, they might stop
[04:28] watching because they don't know what to
[04:30] expect and they don't want to waste
[04:31] their time. But if you create chapters,
[04:33] they can skim through and see what each
[04:34] chapter is and either jump to the
[04:36] chapters that interest them or if
[04:38] they're on a chapter that doesn't
[04:39] interest them, they could skip to the
[04:40] next one. But that way you won't lose
[04:42] them at if you didn't have chapters.
[04:44] Because if you didn't have chapters,
[04:45] someone might come to your video and
[04:46] they're like, "Oh, they're talking about
[04:47] affiliate links. I don't really care
[04:48] about affiliate links. Maybe I don't
[04:49] care about the rest of the stuff they're
[04:50] talking about because I don't know what
[04:51] the rest of the stuff there is going to
[04:52] be talking about because I don't know
[04:53] what the other stuff is that they're
[04:55] going to be talking about. So, I think
[04:57] um it's better to put chapters in than
[04:59] to not put them in. Some people believe
[05:01] that if you put chapters in, people will
[05:03] just skip to the parts they want to
[05:04] watch and watch it and leave. But in my
[05:06] opinion, at least they're watching those
[05:08] parts that they want to watch, right?
[05:09] ando as opposed to coming into your
[05:11] video and leaving right away. So, at
[05:12] least it gives them the option to jump
[05:14] around if they want to jump around
[05:16] versus just jumping out of your video.
[05:18] So, that's why I recommend doing
[05:19] chapters after the description box. Now,
[05:22] sometimes I put the chapters at the very
[05:25] bottom or near the bottom of my
[05:26] description box because I want to put
[05:29] closer to the top how to work with me. I
[05:31] want to put like a call to action right
[05:32] after the description. So sometimes
[05:34] you'll see in my descriptions that I
[05:36] just put the chapters listed near the
[05:38] bottom of the description box because if
[05:40] you scroll over the video, you can see
[05:42] there's those chapters and when you
[05:44] scroll over it and you hover over it
[05:45] with your cursor, it will say what that
[05:47] chapter is about anyway. So they don't
[05:49] need to actually see it explicitly
[05:51] written in front of them. They don't
[05:52] need to see like the table of contents.
[05:54] They can just scan the video themselves
[05:56] and see what those different chapters
[05:58] are about. Which leads me to the next
[06:00] spot or section of the YouTube
[06:02] description of your video, and that is a
[06:04] call to action. You want to have a
[06:06] clear, strong call to action. On my
[06:08] channel, it usually says, "Work with
[06:10] me." And then underneath it links to my
[06:13] website, which allows people to contact
[06:14] me for coaching, joining my mentorship
[06:17] program, or buying my course. So, you
[06:19] want to have a really clear call to
[06:21] action as the next step in your YouTube
[06:23] description. Below that call to action,
[06:25] you can then have all the resources that
[06:27] you want to list or anything you
[06:29] mentioned in the video. For example, if
[06:31] you mentioned a certain YouTuber, if you
[06:33] mentioned a certain product, if you
[06:35] mentioned another YouTube video,
[06:37] whatever you mentioned in the video that
[06:38] you need to explicitly show or tell in
[06:40] the description, I would put that in
[06:42] this spot. Now, so if you're offering
[06:44] free tools, free guides, uh affiliate
[06:46] link things like TubeBuddy or Vid IQ or
[06:50] or um maybe you offering like you have a
[06:53] finance channel, so you have like a
[06:54] budget calculator link or maybe you're a
[06:57] dog groomer, so you have all your
[06:59] recommended dog grooming tools that
[07:00] people can click on to get access to
[07:02] those and purchase those with your
[07:04] affiliate link. Whatever resources that
[07:06] you want to provide your viewers, that's
[07:08] what I would put below your call to
[07:10] action. And below that, I would put any
[07:11] of your social media links and your
[07:13] contact information if people want to
[07:15] contact and reach out to you directly. I
[07:18] personally do not leave my email in the
[07:20] description box because I know that my
[07:22] email is listed in my description of my
[07:25] YouTube channel so people can find it
[07:27] there if they want to. However, at the
[07:29] bottom of the description box of the
[07:31] video, it's a good place to put all your
[07:32] social media handles or any other ways
[07:34] that they can get in contact with you or
[07:36] other resources like your website or
[07:38] things like that. Below that, I would
[07:40] put a disclaimer that hey, if you click
[07:42] on any of the links below, I may receive
[07:44] a small commission based on the fact
[07:47] that they are affiliate links or however
[07:48] you want to say it. So, for example, a
[07:50] disclaimer could be some of the links
[07:52] above are affiliate links and I will
[07:54] earn a small commission from those at no
[07:56] extra cost to you. That way, people are
[07:59] fully aware that if they click on those
[08:00] links that you might earn a small
[08:02] commission from those links. And below
[08:03] that, I would list hashtags. So maybe
[08:06] four hashtags at most that relate to
[08:08] your niche. And below that, you can feel
[08:10] free to add a closing statement like
[08:12] don't forget to like and subscribe,
[08:14] thanks for watching, or something like
[08:15] that. It's up to you. So let's summarize
[08:18] the main points, the structure of your
[08:21] description box. Number one, that
[08:22] attentiongrabbing sentence that's short
[08:24] and sweet. And then the next thing
[08:26] behind that is your grab my free guide
[08:28] and your link. Make sure it's above the
[08:30] fold. Once you open up your description
[08:32] box, below that you will then list a
[08:35] brief description about the video. So a
[08:38] few sentences that are keywordri about
[08:40] the video. It could be bullet points,
[08:42] whatever you want to do. In this video,
[08:43] you will learn bullet point, bullet
[08:45] point, bullet point with all highly um
[08:48] packed with keywords. Below that will be
[08:50] a call to action, a CTA of where people
[08:53] will find out more about you, how to
[08:54] work with you, how to get your courses,
[08:56] how to get into your workshops, whatever
[08:58] it is you want to mention. That would be
[09:00] below the description. Also, below the
[09:02] description, you can put your chapters
[09:04] or like me, you can put your chapters
[09:06] lower down in the description box where
[09:08] you feel comfortable. So, after you have
[09:11] your call to action, then you have your
[09:13] resources, links to your resources. And
[09:16] so that would be anything you mention in
[09:17] the video like, "Hey, you talked about
[09:19] this person, mention them there." "Hey,
[09:21] I said you could get this free resource,
[09:22] put it in the link there." "Hey, if you
[09:24] want to use this product that I'm
[09:26] using," that's where the link would go.
[09:27] So, you have the resource links there.
[09:29] Next up will be social media and contact
[09:31] information. Below that would be the
[09:33] legal disclaimer for any affiliate links
[09:35] that you have to make your audience
[09:37] aware that you will make money if they
[09:39] click on one of those links. And below
[09:40] that, you put the hashtags. And then
[09:42] below that, you have a closing
[09:44] statement. So, there you have it. That's
[09:45] how you can structure your description
[09:47] box of your video. One bonus tip that I
[09:50] would like to share with you is that you
[09:52] can prefill this on all your videos and
[09:55] then adapt it for each video. So, you
[09:57] can't prefill the attention grabbing
[10:00] sentence and and those types of things,
[10:02] but you can prefill the call to action,
[10:04] the affiliate links, all the stuff that
[10:06] you always list in your videos, right?
[10:08] And to do that, what you need to do is
[10:09] go into YouTube Studio, click on
[10:12] settings on the lefthand side, then
[10:14] upload defaults, and when you're in the
[10:17] basic tab, you'll see description box,
[10:20] and that's where you can add in, copy
[10:22] and paste in everything that you would
[10:23] normally have in your videos. So that
[10:25] when you upload a video, that will
[10:27] automatically be pre-filled for you, the
[10:29] description box. And then you just need
[10:30] to add in those few sentences, the few
[10:32] description that relates to that actual
[10:34] video, and the rest will be the same. So
[10:37] that helps you to streamline the process
[10:39] of uploading your video so you don't
[10:40] have to write the description box every
[10:42] single time. So hopefully this was
[10:45] helpful and if you have any questions
[10:46] about it, ask in the comments below.
[10:48] Otherwise, I'll see you in the next
[10:49] video. Bye for now.
