AI Summary

MrBeast shares his top strategies for growing a YouTube channel, emphasizing the importance of making 100 videos to improve, focusing on quality over quantity, and mastering thumbnails and titles to drive clicks. He also stresses hooking viewers in the first five seconds and maintaining retention through pacing and payoff.

[00:56]
Accept That Your Initial Videos Suck

MrBeast says the first step is acknowledging your videos are terrible; it's okay because improvement comes with practice, not from the algorithm.

[01:54]
Make 100 Videos and Improve Each Time

Stop overplanning and start uploading. Make 100 videos, improving one thing each time (script, thumbnail, editing), then evaluate on the 101st.

[04:04]
Craft Short, Clickable Titles

Titles should be under 50 characters to avoid truncation, represent the content, and spark curiosity. Extreme opinions can supercharge clicks.

[05:53]
First Five Seconds Are Crucial

With auto-play, viewers often don't see the thumbnail; the first five seconds must convince them to click. Match expectations set by the title.

[07:40]
Hook Viewers Early to Reduce Drop-off

A strategic intro that matches expectations and delivers value early can retain 15% more viewers. Remove dull moments and cut frequently between B-roll.

[09:14]
Give Viewers Why They Clicked Immediately

Don't drag out the intro; deliver the promised content right away. Avoid irrelevant fluff that doesn't match the title.

[11:35]
Focus on Quality Over Quantity

Uploading daily without standout quality leads to mediocrity. Better to upload fewer, higher-quality videos that the algorithm will promote naturally.

[14:14]
Compound Effect of Good Videos

If viewers love a video, they are more likely to watch more, creating compounding growth. Don't underestimate the power of audience loyalty.

[15:33]
Thumbnails Should Spark Curiosity

Thumbnails need to be simple and evoke curiosity. Example: a thousand people on a skateboard makes you wonder what happens. Update old thumbnails with new skills.

[18:48]
Devote Yourself Fully to the Craft

Success requires intense dedication and a mindset of constant learning. MrBeast admits he works obsessively and has mental breakdowns, but it's part of the journey.

The path to YouTube success is iterative improvement: accept mediocrity, constantly refine your videos, and focus on delivering value to viewers through compelling thumbnails, titles, and early hooks.

14:14

[00:00] you could get 10 million subscribers within six months. I mean, they do. and just get to work and start uploading.

[00:13] comes from making the best videos possible and thumbnails. to growing a channel on YouTube. than 50,000 views on 100 videos.

[00:29] and what he would do if he started over from scratch. - Your videos suck. They just do.

[00:44] And the sooner you learn how to make good, great videos I think it's the biggest takeaway They weren't, they were terrible.

[00:56] And I think, you know, to be successful, You gotta believe in it, like there's a good probability your videos just suck.

[01:11] or 100 videos, I don't know. and just like get to the point where they don't. It's not the algorithm, it's not anything,

[01:24] you just make terrible videos and that's okay Like you don't just pick up a baseball It takes many, many, many years

[01:40] and they'll just sit there and they'll plan their first video for three months. your first video is not gonna give views, period.

[01:54] So stop sitting there and thinking Like all you need to do, is make 100 videos and improve something every time.

[02:10] like maybe you can get some views, but, you know, (MrBeast mumbling) and it doesn't take them some,

[02:23] who are seven foot five and making in the NBA. but for the average person like us, you know, backgrounds in filmmaking, just make 100 videos.

[02:37] And then talk to me on your 101st video. I don't know, put more effort into the script. The fourth one, try to figure out a way

[02:50] study a new thumbnail tip and implement it. That's the beauty of content creation online. from the coloring, to the frame rate, to the editing,

[03:03] every little thing can be improved What YouTube wants is they want people to click on a video Now you can like draw little lines

[03:18] and how to get people to watch. you'll learn that you're more studying human psychology, just replace it with audience and it works perfectly.

[03:32] No, the audience didn't like that video. And that's literally all the algorithm does And if you deny that you just make terrible videos

[03:47] - Not just short, it's also if someone reads it, Is it just so intrinsically interesting Ideally, it's a title also that you know,

[04:04] So ideally the title represents content and the title is I stepped on a bug, And then if it was like a five second video,

[04:18] whether people want to click it, ideally you want it below 50 characters you run the chance of it going dot, dot, dot.

[04:31] and I saw how many dollar bills I could stack on top And that's the worst thing Short, simple ideally

[04:45] And it is a good segue into the content The more extreme the opinion, then it just supercharges it, so like...

[04:58] - Yeah, like this just for water, right? You're like Fiji water sucks. Yeah that'd do fine. - [Interviewer] Yeah.

[05:10] - Yeah but then you have to deliver - I heard you guys talking about auto play on YouTube. but now on YouTube, videos automatically play.

[05:25] what is the thumbnail, what is the video? You know, by the first five seconds it's like, - Because it's possible that people open YouTube

[05:38] I've watched hundreds of our videos So like you just literally don't even see the thumbnail I have to like visually convince you to click on the video.

[05:53] - Yeah, that's why we go so hardcore. 'Cause of course people aren't... - Wow, so those first five seconds,

[06:06] - Oh of, 100%. - Now you have to convince people to click - That's driving CTR now too.

[06:18] who like have boring first five seconds, it's brutal. and at the very beginning of the video to minimize dropoff, that those expectations are being met.

[06:32] where it's like Tether is a scam then you are like, oh this is bull, Tether is a scam and I'm gonna teach you why,

[06:48] So at the very beginning match the expectations is what they're getting but you're also getting even more.

[07:01] Which a lot of people, sometimes it takes them and so you lose, Everyone's video start like this and then it levels off.

[07:13] that click off on the audience retention graph. So it's easier for people to visualize. like retaining as many people as possible at the start.

[07:26] where you lose 35% of your viewers in the first 30 seconds that's 15% more people that are watching you know, And it's not like you made the whole video

[07:40] You just had a more strategic intro that hooked them. and like to really impose how important that is. really does make the difference

[07:53] the thing people undervalue the most - I can almost, I think I can quote it, and I have 100 thousand dollars of this bag.

[08:05] - Like it gives you everything you need. You basically wanna remove every dull moment. make them watch the video and just roast it.

[08:19] if I just talk to a camera for 10 seconds without a cut, So like having a B cam and a C cam and just, but three seconds in cutting to a B cam and then a C cam,

[08:34] and not that crazy. typically having a payoff at the end, keep some, right? you're gonna watch to the end

[08:46] So having a good payoff at the end. - I would say just give them why they clicked. Like that right there isn't even super complex

[09:01] Like it's hard for a lot of people, people for whatever reason, like they just drag it out. and they'll be like,

[09:14] and it's just stuff that has nothing to do and it's like that's not why I came here. before we get into the rest of MrBeast's genius advice

[09:58] Okay, let's get back into the video. the more likely they are to keep watching. in the hypothetically back half of a video

[10:12] we're so deep into this where a lot of people listening unless we just have a really boring part 'Cause they're just in it, they're immersed.

[10:25] you just want to get people and then just kind of hold them there. people debate it to the end of time on Twitter,

[10:38] with not using my face or my voice and in six months have 20 million subscribers. you could get 10 million views of video

[10:53] no matter where you are right now within six months. And I could already tell you 90% of the people watching, And everyone has excuses and they're always like, nah,

[11:06] But I mentor a lot of people. I see it even to this day, I still see it all the time. that it is knowledge and you start your,

[11:19] whatever it is, if you want to be less hardcore but, what makes a good video, what does my audience want, you just assume that I will never understand

[11:35] I just need to be devoted to learning as much as possible And I gotta prove every video as much as I can. There are tons of viral ideas that people can do

[11:47] Like at one point, we just grabbed a tent, some stuff and we went in the desert I have so many videos where we spent hardly any money,

[12:02] and go through it that have gotten tens of millions of views So people who say, Well, A, I didn't start off with money, I was poor,

[12:17] just to buy a camera saving up from YouTube like anyone can do. I think it's better to really, really focus on quality.

[12:31] and you can upload a video a day and like none of those videos will really stand out. oh this video, like this video is good.

[12:44] they just post like videos that aren't bad and none of them ever pop off so they never get an audience upload half or a third or even like a fifth of the videos

[12:59] that like the algorithm has to promote it 'cause it's such an interesting and good video, and you're constantly having to upload videos

[13:12] oh this Monday, I said I'd upload every Monday. the viewers notice that the quality isn't as good A lot of times people, oh boy,

[13:28] honestly and that... you have to, that and they have horrible friend groups And so like a lot of times I'm just like,

[13:44] And it's like, well they're wrong. Like someone should always call you and... Like that's because imagine if someone does that every video

[13:59] over the next 10 years Like imagine the compound effect. oh well, it's all like CTR and stuff like that.

[14:14] Underestimates is it's, If people loved your, they're more likely to watch your next one.

[14:26] that was good but like, that's enough of you for the day. holy crap, that was crazy. And they just, and they watched 10 videos.

[14:41] That data can't describe and like I don't, That's how you get these high view counts It's okay to draw inspiration for me

[14:54] - [Interviewer] Yeah. saw that format and I was just like, - How can I put 100 times more creativity into it?

[15:06] - [Interviewer] Yeah. how can I do that but 100 times better and make it my own? oh MrBeast did that, I'm just gonna do it.

[15:20] - [MrBeast] You want it to be simple. like when they're scrolling through their suggested to understand what you're conveying

[15:33] The way I like to phrase it is, or spike their curiosity or whatever emotion they'll wonder, you know,

[15:48] Like, an example would be like if you uploaded a video, and like people are falling off the side or whatever and people are like hanging on the side of it.

[16:03] If you don't click that, you're gonna like be so curious, Later in the day when you're daydreaming, What happened to those thousand people on that skateboard?

[16:17] when making thumbnails. Is that something, do you usually just stick with one we get better at making thumbnails every year.

[16:31] and I don't change it most of the time, and I'm like, oh that's a horrible thumbnail. we just go back and update a lot of our older thumbnails

[16:44] Just with like the new knowledge we have that actually usually does help quite a bit that they usually do see a little bit of an uptake

[16:56] where it's like seeing if whatever, like 1,000, And then with the new stuff I know Then magically it starts doing a little bit better.

[17:12] 'cause I'm not as much of an idiot anymore. for culture in America, at least in my opinion. and people,

[17:25] to be a, one of the top creators and that and that will also be the biggest in 10 years Like you don't need a network, you don't need, you know,

[17:42] and you can influence people how you want. And you can leverage that to build businesses or you know, I think like people don't realize

[17:55] No one's ever gonna do what I do better than me. - [Interviewer] Yeah. I devote every atom in my brain to solving this.

[18:08] and I think in decades, not years. So no, the next me isn't gonna be me I'd just start sleeping less so I could work even more.

[18:23] - The barrier to entry to be you is extremely high. Like people shouldn't be me. I, my personality, my soul,

[18:35] entertaining my fans as best as I can. You know, mean like, you should have work-life balance. You should not devote your entire life to this one thing.

[18:48] I have a mental breakdown every other week - What do you think gets us to a million subscribers? - A million views of videos.

[19:02] That's the only question you should ask me. - [Interviewer] Yeah. from making the best videos possible and thumbnails.

[19:16] And that's the thing that you're known for. Do that every single day for years. And then you'll probably get views.
