I Thought I Scored Buying This Rare Lincoln Blackwood Luxury Truck, But It's Mechanically Totaled!

[00:01] automotive channel in all of YouTube. And I am so so proud of myself right now because I am now the owner of a Lincoln Blackwood. >> Everybody want the Blackwood now.

[00:16] now. So you don't need a one key that's So you don't need a one key that's everybody want temptation feels. Tailgate closed.

[00:30] >> Now, there were many luxurious pickup trucks before the Lincoln Blackwood. >> The first one, the Chevy Cameo in 1955 where they actually took fiberglass from the Corvette factory and sort of gave it a Bair look in the bed and some more

[00:42] luxury features. So, it goes all the way back to the 50s. There's also a lot of the Lariat package, but nobody had ever made a luxury branded pickup truck until sense. They were already making the Navigator on the Ford truck platform,

[00:57] the SUV version. So to adapt that into a truck, well, why not? And when it was unveiled as a concept car in the new millennium, it was really, really cool. They actually used real wood in the rear quarters of the truck and stainless

[01:10] steel inside in the bed. It looked like a show truck from the factory, but when they put it in production, there were a lot of compromises. And this thing, well, it didn't really work as a pickup truck, except in one very important way.

[01:23] And it didn't really work as a car. So, it was a massive, massive sales flop and canceled after only two model years. Lincoln was expecting to sell 10,000 of 3,000 for two model years. So, they're incredibly rare, but also not that

[01:37] much into the teens for these. And I bought this one at Barrett Jackson for $11,000, which is pretty much the going rate. But you never see them for sale. They're really hard to find. And when I saw it, I I just lost my mind because

[01:51] road, which was very rare, I would freak out. And the opportunity to buy one, well, I couldn't help myself. I mean, can you blame me? This is just so weird. pickup truck, there are so many similarities and differences. It's

[02:05] we'll get to the Blackwood first. Obviously, the truck bed on this standard truck bed on the Lightning, a normal tailgate. You can use it as a truck bedlininer on this one, but with

[02:18] the Blackwood, it is fancy. You hit a fob button and it is power operated the cover. And you even get a little LED light show here inside of the bed, which is carpeted and does have some stainless

[02:34] steel similar to the concept car, but it is not the entire bed. You also get barn doors. Pretty incredible. And the Blackwood script goes across. The case that with the seam. So, it's all a little bit off. But then the barn door

[02:49] presentation. Oh, yeah. On the Lincoln on the Lincoln black wood. So, that's that's stuck and that's broken. Anyway, first thing I've discovered here, but I'll take a broken

[03:04] latch that can be repaired to the Car Wizards over a broken mechanism here because this is all very complicated. It was very difficult to keep going under warranty. The storage boxes uh definitely do work

[03:16] though. But this is just so goofy. And it has a little Lincoln cod piece here on the bed that goes in inserts itself to the barn doors. Oh yeah, that is just so cool. I could do this all day, but then I'm scared

[03:31] it that much. But you also have an escape latch here uh to pull if another hidden release underneath the truck. But this bed is not practical for anything. It's not a usable truck bed.

[03:45] This thing doesn't even have a very good payload capacity either. 1,500 lb, which by the time you put in four people in this truck, you're pretty close to it. pretty practical as a pickup truck, but also a fun performance vehicle, this

[03:59] isn't usable as a truck at all. But it does look really cool with this faux wood down the side in black for the black wood with this little seam. This isn't a sticker. This is actually a seam going through all of this. A lot of

[04:13] this thing bougie and luxury, but it had a price to match. The Lightning, the performance pickup truck that was expensive, $32,000 the MSRP in 2002. The expensive, $32,000 the MSRP in 2002. The Lincoln Blackwood over $50,000

[04:27] when new and only had one option. So, you got everything from the factory except for one option which this one has. But let's look at the fronts of on the Lightning you have the aggressive body kit here making it lower in the

[04:40] ground effects and all that stuff. It looks really cool. 5.4 L V8 supercharged under the hood, but you also got the 5.4 non-s supercharged in this Lincoln for 300 horsepower. So, the best engine they had in the F-150 trucks at the time. But

[04:53] it also got the Navigator treatment on the front, the Lincoln Town Car looking grill and headlights. And the front bumper totally different as well. And really didn't look at this thing before I bought it. I just saw blackwood and

[05:07] thing. I just had to have it. But now let's compare interiors on the lighting department because it is suede and it has these inserts. All very cool. But then the dash, the steering wheel, very

[05:20] stock Ford here. Hard plastics, very cheap looking. And that is not the case on the Lincoln Blackwood. Oh yeah. More finest plastic tree wood

[05:33] Oh yeah. More finest plastic tree wood everywhere. And you come inside into a very luxurious but thinly disguised Ford F-150 pickup truck. So this is not hard plastic. They made this soft, luxurious vinyl. They put a clock right here,

[05:47] which the tip of this is broken off and somebody has glued back together. And then you have the blackwood script right here just below the passenger airbag and more faux wood throughout along with some very fancy bucket seats. So they

[06:02] are heated and they are air conditioned, not cooled but air conditioned and you can toggle back and forth to change that. You have lumbar support as well. Power movement but then manual for the seatback which is interesting. They

[06:16] then they couldn't make the back power operated, but also a sunroof to make it extra fancy. And the rear seats are buckets out of the navigator. So, you do get this massive center console here along with huge cup holders in the front

[06:30] and the back. And inside here, you also have the pocket for the owner's manual along with the GPS system and a six disc changer, which the GPS resides right here. It is incredible. This one has a few dead pixels though,

[06:45] but the startup sequence. Come on. There you are. Onboard Lincoln navigation system. It is not touchscreen at all. It's all very clunky with these controls. But the best part is the volume adjustment right

[09:19] your cruise control. But also, I don't need to buckle my seat belt. I'm not moving. But also some black wood faux wood here in the steering wheel. And you can see the instrument cluster. It's only lit up with the ABS light and

[09:31] only lit up with the ABS light and 112,000 miles on the odometer. I also have a handy dandy little computer up here which is showing 194 miles to empty miles per gallon on this pig. 11 m per gallon. That is incredible. But she is a

[09:47] gallon. That is incredible. But she is a very thirsty 5.4 4 L V8 under the hood. A nice engine obviously, and this is my first time looking at it. Looks pretty nice. But the other big downfall with the Blackwood is they were only offered

[09:59] supposed to be like a car, but people want four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive reason why people didn't buy them. Three strikes, you failed, not a usable truck, two wheel drive, and very expensive, over $50,000. So, like $80,000 in

[10:14] today's money. So, the Lincoln a big big massive failure but incredibly rare but pickup trucks to continue into the future. The Cadillac Escalade EXT is totally different because it's very usable as a truck. Full avalanche to

[10:29] have a full 8ft bed all-wheel drive. They had two generations of this and it Blackwood, well, it failed, but then they brought it back as the Mark LT to sort of fix all of those issues. You had four-wheel drive and you had a usable

[10:43] truck, but then the recession hit and nobody wanted big gas guzzling, very Escalade pickup truck didn't survive. And since then, we've had luxury So, the equivalent today would be the platinum edition Ford F-150, which

[10:57] really isn't the same. Isn't nearly as cool. The Lincoln tail lights, too. That's Oh, well, there's a there's a hole in the Lincoln Navigator tail Lincoln. And I also wonder how it matches up parts-wise to be able to fix

[11:10] things on this truck. I imagine from this point forward, it is very easy to keep this thing running. I do think it has some minor leaks going on and also the ABS light. So, the car was have some things to fix on this thing, but I'm

[11:23] also curious what he thinks of the Lincoln Blackwood in general. Underneath this thing is a lifelong California truck, so it does look really, really issue. And one thing that I noticed, the Michelin Defender tires, somebody spent

[11:36] money on tires for this thing later in its life, so it was definitely taken care of. And the interior is super super clean. Some of these interior panels have been cleaned up, touched up here in the front, but otherwise, this thing is

[11:49] in super super nice condition. The hole in the Lincoln floor mat you would expect at 112,000 mi, but it does not seem abused at all. Oh man, can't believe I own this thing. And look at these pouches in the back for your map

[12:04] pockets that's magnetic. And then you have a rear climate and stereo control as well. A speaker right here. And I guess if these two trucks had a baby, it would be the F-150 Harley-Davidson edition because it gave a more luxurious

[12:17] four-door crew cab interior with the Lightning looks and the supercharged engine. Unfortunately though, it has Harley-Davidson badges everywhere. So, opinion. And when it comes to the hierarchy of values in this generation

[12:31] of trucks, the Lightning is definitely on top as far as low mileage examples, bringing big money. Then the Harley trucks, and then these, it really mileage. They're all just around $10,000. And that really doesn't make

[12:43] any sense to me because they made almost 30,000 Lightning SVT pickup trucks. Same 20, 30,000 units. But with the Blackwood, only a little over 3,300. So almost as rare as a Mercedes 300 SL. the Lincoln Blackwood. And you can buy these

[12:59] as much horsepower without the supercharger, but they are way more interesting and really nice to drive. So, let's take a cruise in this thing up So, let's take a cruise in this thing up to the car wizards. My Blackwood. First

[13:11] impressions on this Blackwood. It is so comfortable. These seats so supple, the leather so soft. The Blackwood feels so good on my bum, I got to say. And yeah,

[13:23] things to to go to the wizards. >> Louder, softer, softer. wizard, so I guess I don't need to program it. But 300 horsepower,

[13:36] it's pretty good. Nice and peppy, but also very quiet. I insulation, but it does feel much quieter as far as the road noise from the normal F-150. But as far as the ride goes, it doesn't feel all that much

[13:53] little bit softer shocks. And the steering doesn't feel all that different than a truck either, but neither does it feel different from a Lincoln Town Car, which is a body on frame and I think a steering gearbox. So, not too different

[14:05] there. The braking feels fine, but overall, yeah, it doesn't feel special in the driving experience. It just feels like a truck. But being from 2002, I think the Blackwood blew people's minds for sure with all the

[14:20] luxury features in here. So, it has aged well. I mean, it does look kind of blobby and plasticky like a '90s 2000's truck, but it's holding up really well. And that is another key difference between trucks of this era versus trucks

[14:33] now where they're so complicated and their engines so high-strung that bad things happen a lot, unfortunately, a lot now. But it's not just Ford. Every these complicated engines that still have power but get better fuel economy

[14:47] than 11.5 have had these horrible mechanical gotchas whether it be cylinder deactivation or turbos or other things that just the engines don't last anymore. So this is something that I feel like could possibly outlive me. But

[15:02] 20 years old. So I am curious what the car was will find wrong with my Blackwood. Hopefully not much. Weezard. >> Oh wow. I haven't seen one of these in years.

[15:18] >> I almost never see them anymore. So I was very happy to get one. And >> I always did prefer black wood. >> Wizard. I know there's no HR department about consent. >> Oh, I probably should not touch the

[15:33] >> Easy on. Yes. But 2002, Lincoln Blackwood, the first luxury pickup truck. And ain't she a be? >> It is a beauty. And I, if I remember correctly, inside the bed is an area where if you're a true truck person,

[15:48] this is probably not the truck for you. >> No, it's it's uh like a show truck. That's the thing. Modern trucks nowadays when they do show cars, the beds aren't usable. They do fancy wood and stuff just like this. So Lincoln really was

[16:14] the bed's not usable, but it's a pretty good tow pig. and things. >> Yes. Unfortunately though, the barn doors are only 50% working. So this is something I need

[18:40] I could have done a lot of damage. This Blackwood is actually really weird. So, the Wizard ran out of room on the frame here. Yeah, you can't go at an angle and then the arms aren't long enough to reach this

[25:43] timing chains, your water pump, your belt, temp tensioner, all these different parts and pieces going to have to be replaced when we take it apart. >> How many hours of labor is it? >> 24.

[25:57] >> 24. >> 24. Okay, so that's a lot of it, too. >> The timing chain kit alone is a grand, 1,200 bucks. Head gasket kit is 800 bucks, 700 bucks. It just adds up. So, I'm way better off to just walk away

[26:11] from it and let somebody like if they want to try it at home to fix it >> I would think so. It's probably the best. >> That's probably what I would do. >> It's really not I wouldn't put this

[26:23] money into it. I wouldn't. >> Yeah. I'm going to have to think about it because I seven grand into it. That doesn't I could just take a $7,000 loss right now. It's just a matter of if I really like the truck or not. But like

[26:37] if I put it out and said, "Hey, it runs and drives just fine." Leak some coolant from the back cylinder heads. The thing is though, somebody would buy it and then not disclose that and then flip it to the next person, which is how it

[26:50] auction. So, somebody had this thing for a really long time. They knew the head some dealer sold it to another dealer who didn't know, and then put in the shady. you you hope that they're not being shady, but that's that's what

[27:05] then >> and then they finally end up so like piper. >> And if I sell it cheap, then I could with somebody. >> So here's like the thing. Even if

[27:18] somebody like me or Danielson could buy something like this, even doing the labor for free, we're still going to have probably three grand in parts, just the parts. And even then, I don't I mean, it's kind of worth it at that, but
