Spider-Man: Brand New Day Breakdown – Marvel Easter Eggs You Missed!

[00:01] have missed in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Welcome back, Screen Crush. I'm Ryan Ary, and Tom Holland is back with his first Spider-Man film in almost 5 years. Now, in Spider-Man No Way Home, Peter Parker was forced to let the

[00:14] entire world forget that he even existed in order to save his universe from destruction. This forget Peter Parker spell also affects the people closest to him, like all of his fellow heroes, Happy Hogan, his best friend Ned, and

[00:26] the love of his life, MJ. Now, Brand New Day borrows its title from the Dan Slotr run of Spidey comics that started in 2008. Now, this was a fresh start for Spider-Man following the divisive one more day storyline. In that comic, Peter

[00:39] May's life. And then he is forced to sacrifice his marriage. He and Mary Jane meaning Peter Parker was free to be single. Now, erasing Peter's marriage was a very divisive move that we do see adapted in

[00:54] this movie. And we have seen many Spider-Man stories where Peter struggles life and his hero life. Like in Spider-Man 2 when he gave up being the hero. But this movie shows us the reverse. A Peter who abandoned his

[01:07] personal life to focus on being a hero which creates a scenario where Peter is truly alone and becoming more spider than man. Now that Spider-Man Home trilogy was directed by John Watts. But now Shani and the Legend of the 10 rings

[01:19] director and creator of the Disney Plus series Wonderman Destin Daniel Credin has stepped in to direct. So, this truly is a brand new day with a fresh slate of stories. So, at the end of Spider-Man No Way Home, after Peter accepted that

[01:31] Doctor Strange must cast a spell to make the world forget who he is, Peter them and then remind them of their time together. Peter goes on to tell MJ. >> It's okay. I'm going to come and find you and I'll explain everything.

[01:45] about their life, but then he sees that she and that are happy. He also notes the cut on her head left over from the fight at the Statue of Liberty. So for safe because they don't know that he is Spider-Man. So Peter instead opts to

[02:01] keep his secret. So No Way Home ended with Peter in a new cloth suit with no Stark gear living in a rundown apartment and websing through the city, meaning serve as a three film origin for Spider-Man, setting up the classic

[02:14] Spidey that we know and love in this movie. The movie also begins on a literal sad note. a solo piano playing the Marvel Studios theme. Now, the last movie ended with a real downer with Peter walking away from happiness to do

[02:26] catches us up on this ending with screenplay pages and visuals from the previous movie. And this is similar to the opening of Spider-Man 2, which used artwork by Alex Ross to retell the events of the first film. Notice how in

[02:39] the recap images after the spell is cast, Peter disappears from all of the with Peter shortly after the events of No Way Home. He has a 3D printer to repair his suit and a new AI named Eevee, voiced by Naomi Watts. Now, the

[02:52] last movie ended with Peter wearing a black suit and not having any Stark technology. But look, in a world this technologically advanced, it makes sense that he would incorporate high-tech into his crime fighting. In particular, I'm

[03:04] because they allow him to emote while he talks, similar to how artists draw them in the comics. And we also saw Riri Williams create her own AI in the show Iron Hart. And much like the first AI she created, Eevee is not as polished as

[03:17] Friday or Tony's other assistants. And then in the middle of all this, we get to see a private moment inside the mask of Spider-Man. Now, this is an actual practical effect shot filled with a tiny camera right next to Tom Holland's

[03:29] eyeball. The shot conveys Peter's loneliness and also how he is living in a kind of unsettled inhuman life. He's isolated from everything but his work. And dude, I can relate. The movie's theme of work life balance resonates

[03:42] very hard with me. We work so hard to make videos like this for you guys and do what I love. You know, this movie really captures an important aspect of Peter Parker. The dude is broke and

[03:54] stuck in a gig economy and can't hold a job. Now, in the comics, this is cuz he his life as Spider-Man and he had a rough time finding the right career path. And I, like everything else with Spider-Man, can relate to this. A lot of

[06:22] apartment, we see Ned's Emperor Palpatine minifig that he showed off in the first movie. And of course, Ned had just finished that Lego Death Star just identity. Still hurts to watch that happen. We also see the empty coffee cup

[06:36] the coffee shop and almost told her about their past. He also finds the note that he wrote for her, which kind of shakes him out of his workaholic mindset change. Peter is watching Ned's social videos. Notice his handle is Grateful

[06:50] Ned, a play on Grateful Dead. And then he lives vicariously through his friend's life, forging an actual parasocial relationship. Now, the videos also to show off Ned's very regrettable

[07:02] a map of Manhattan that he uses to track criminal activity and a pinned card that reads, "Great power, great responsibility," echoing May's last >> With great power, there must also come great responsibility.

[07:16] almost like a writer posting the guiding In this movie, that theme is Peter searching for balance between his two lives. And also, Cretton's first Marvel film, Shani and the Legend of the 10

[07:28] Rings, was also about this same balance with a character who is torn between two moves into a loft apartment with a skylight, just like the one he had for years in the comics. And also, similar to the PlayStation game, he uses an app

[07:41] to tell him where crimes are happening. Then, we see Peter standing upside down on a rafter in an absolutely perfect shot. This one image conveys how Peter being special is what makes him be alone. It also shows us that at this

[07:54] point his life is literally upside down and out of balance. And then we got our first look at his new suit, which is an actual cloth suit, not weird motion cloth because all through the movie, you

[08:06] Tom Holland's ears through his mask. Tom Holland has also confirmed that the Brand New Day suit takes elements from Toby and Andrew spider suits because he Way Home. For instance, the suit has slightly raised webbing and like a candy

[08:20] apple collar like Toby suit and has the larger spider on the back which is like Andrews. And then we get this sweet montage of him fighting villains which covers. In a featureette, explains that they shot these scenes at

[08:33] 420 frames a second. though it was incredibly difficult to hit the right mark and for Tom Holland to emote. We of course see Amazing Fantasy 15 right here Spider-Man by Steve Ditco and Stan Lee. Boomerang's Attack is from Amazing 345

[08:47] drawn by Eric Larson. The first appearance of the tarantula by legendary Spider-Man artist John Armita Senior. The Scorpion Fight is from Spider-Man Alex Savic. And this obscure one is Amazing 221 by Bob Witchek. He also

[09:01] faces off against Tombstone, aka Lonnie Lincoln, played by Eugene Bird, who also show Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. And this visual is taken from Spectacular Spider-Man 142 by another great Spider-Man artist, Salashima. So

[09:14] this montage is showing us both the passage of time and that Spider-Man has become very, very good at beating Spider-Man. At this point, none of his regular enemies can beat him. So in this movie, he has to overcome the blocks in

[09:26] his own mind. He also fights these goons on top of a roof, a classic Spider-Man location that, like many things in this movie, feel like a nod to the Insomniac mention the Man Freddy crime syndicate, which is run by the super villain

[09:38] Silverman in the comics. Also, right here, there's a pizzeria with a font similar to the classic Spider-Man cover font. Now, when Pete goes into this deli, we see Bureau on the shelf. This is the non-alcoholic beer company that

[09:50] here to buy flowers for May's grave, which is similar to this scene in Spider-Man 2. But in that movie, Peter is buying flowers for the living, Mary Jane. But in this movie, he buys them for the dead, Aunt May, because his old

[10:03] life is dead and he hasn't moved on. He is so focused on his life as Spider-Man that he ignores the cute girl across the hall, which might be a meta call back to the internet's most famous Marvel ship, Pete and Ursula.

[10:16] Scorpion, he wears this puffy winter vest, and it might be a nod to this game. Now, the Scorpion is the only villain that has actually been teased in a prior movie. In Homecoming, Matt Gargan was on the Staten Island Ferry to

[10:30] interfered. And then, in the mid-credit scene of that movie, he told Tombs that he wanted revenge. You know, take a picture, slice his throat, put his head >> And of course, we see his Scorpion tattoo. Now, in the comics, Gargan was a

[10:43] Jameson to wear the Scorpion suit and catch Spider-Man. You know, in previous would have been the main villain of the movie, but here he gets a minor role, from Better Call Saul. Now, we never find out exactly where he got his gear,

[10:59] weaponry that he was trying to buy off tombs when he was on the ferry. So, deal and bought it off the tinkerer. And by the way, you might want to buy this for our merch store, The Cinema. A tribute to my favorite scene in any

[12:08] is played by the bears, Tina Morero, and I jumped out of my seat when they revealed her name. See, for years, Gan Wolf was a major ally of Spider-Man in by the Sin Eater, and a reporter named Eddie Brock thinks that he caught the

[12:21] wrong, this ruins Brock's career, and he swears revenge on Spider-Man and later becomes Venom. So, this one character could be the first step of a long plan to pit Tom Holland against Venom in the MCU. In the comics, Damage Control is an

[12:35] superhero battles, and their job is mostly played for laughs. But in the MCU, they first appeared in Spider-Man Homecoming's opening scene. They are introduced as a government agency co-founded by Tony Stark that took the

[12:47] cleanup contract from Adrien Tombs. So really, Damage Control has always been kind of the overarching bad guy of the Spider-Man series. Back then, Ty Daly played Damage Control boss and Marie Hope, who was probably set to star in

[13:00] the Damage Control TV series on ABC that never got off the ground. Then in Spider-Man No Way Home, we saw Damage Control arrest Peter and seize the Edith drones, which they later repurposed to hunt down Camala Khan in the show Miss

[13:12] Marvel. I should also note that Camala Khan is a mutant, which will be Avengers: Secret Wars. Damage Control She-Hulk, which is also where we first saw their supermax prison in California.

[13:25] And finally, they were the antagonist of series Wonderman, where they were they could justify their high government funding. Now, as we talked about in our Indian explained video, we think it's likely the damage control will continue

[13:38] department, but more on that later. Peter has to wash his suit. But of the comics, most famously in Amazing Spider-Man 82 when he had to do laundry wouldn't find out his secret identity. Now, he's watching a news broadcast of

[13:53] from Sheila Rivera, who was an aid to Mayor Wilson Fisk and Daredevil born end of his administration. Looks like she's doing great. She's the new mayor. existence where he's trapped in his apartment and he only sees the real

[14:08] reminded me of Gene Hackman and Francis it's also like Frank Castle. The Punisher lives in hideouts and bunkers. He puts up walls and cameras and booby traps between himself and the outside

[14:21] present day when a damage control armored vehicle is being hijacked for a high-speed chase, which again feels like the car side missions from the Insomniac disable take turns just like Spidey does

[14:34] that this street was destroyed in the Battle of New York, which of course was Avengers. Tom Holland said that this tank chase was one of the first things morale boost for the team. When they filmed in the streets of Glasgow, it was

[14:49] slinging practically. In fact, they practically invited fans and onlookers to film the footage and post it online, making it feel like everybody was Now, The Chase is interrupted by Frank Castle, aka The Punisher. He first

[15:03] appeared in Amazing Spider-Man 129 when he hunted down Spider-Man thinking he was a criminal. In fact, that famous first appearance cover is replicated by the movie's final act when Frank accidentally shoots Spidey with a sniper

[15:15] rifle. Now, there were three Punisher movies made in the 80s and the 2000s. And get this, Tom Jane actually appeared as Frank Castle here in the background on-screen crossover. In the MCU, Punisher first appeared in Daredevil

[15:28] gangs that killed his family and then he hunts them down again in season one of his own show and then again in the ultraviolent OneShot, One Last Kill. He Kingpins forces in season one of Born Again. And personally, I got to say The

[15:42] Punisher season 2 is the best he's ever been put to screen. Now, Bernthal and life. They've been in several movies together, like this year's Odyssey, and their Marvel auditions. Frank is driving his battle van, which is taken straight

[15:56] show. In the comics and here, Peter kind of puts up with a Punisher, but does not approve of him actually killing people, or cursing, which he does a lot of in >> Cut your Oh, >> God damn it.

[16:09] which are also a weapon in the Insomniac game. And after the tank crashes and villain, his spider sense activates, which is conveyed with a dolly zoom, which is conveyed with a dolly zoom, just like it is in the Sam Ramy films.

[16:23] Now, although they never say it outright, it's likely that Gan can't possess him because of his spider sense. Remember, in No Way Home, we saw that even when his soul is not in his body, the spidey sense acts like a defensive

[16:35] big reveal of this movie is, of course, that Sadie Sync was indeed playing the telepathic Marvel hero, Shathra. What? Just kidding. She's Gan Gray. Like, we see her using her powers by controlling other people's bodies, which

[16:49] comics for years and even in the first X-Men movie. >> What do you honor for? >> Later in the film, her powers even freeze half of Manhattan, like Xavier freezing the Oval Office at the end of

[17:03] bunch of people during his seizure in the movie Logan. A damage control is taking Scorpion to the Supermax facility that we saw in She-Hulk and Wonderman. somewhere where he can easily escape. Now, when Gene tries to enter Peter's

[17:17] mind, we briefly see his old bedroom moments after May discovers his secret that just like in the comics, this boy from Queens is a Mets fan. There's even going to Mets games in Peter Parker

[17:30] Spider-Man issue 33 by Paul Jenkins. There's also an adat walker on his shelf Homecoming. And I love that all through these fights, he lives up to the checking in on people. >> You okay, kid? Yeah, you're okay.

[17:43] >> Afterwards, he needs information, so he goes to a spa to see Elena Bova. Notice the spa worker is watching Men in Black, another Sony movie about a villain who possesses people's bodies. And I think it's perfect that Elena hangs out in a

[17:55] spa all day for two reasons. One, it shows that she is a very chill person. >> I love hot sauce. Yeah. >> And two, Russians love ashfits. Wait, who is she again? So, Yolena Bova is Natasha's adopted spy sister, and her

[18:10] first appearance in the MCU was in the movie Black Widow. That's when she and brainwashed them as children. In fact, she mentions the brainwashing in this scene and says that this mind control doesn't seem like it's the same thing.

[18:22] of losing Natasha in the show Hawkeye before she fell in with another group of Avengers. She's set to be a major lead in Avengers Doomsday, where she leads the team. And in this scene, she's very clear to call the team the New Avengers.

[18:36] And this might be because of the lawsuit that Sam has filed where he's trying to So, while the new Avengers are focused Peter that his problems are small potatoes, which is kind of similar to

[18:48] >> Steady Crockett, there are people who handle this sort of thing. with the comics where the Avengers and the Fantastic 4 handle these big cosmic level hoods. Now, during their soak, she tells him about super graphic artwork of

[19:03] him on the internet, which by the way, in real life's only going to get worse after people see how jacked Tom Holland is for this movie. She even namerops Mysterio, meaning that after everybody's memories were rewritten, maybe people

[19:15] up and not that Spider-Man killed him. Now, both Elena and Gene DeWolf are okay, almost like their surrogate mother normal life. Elena knows that leading a life obsessed with their line of work

[19:29] can lead into crippling depression like we saw at the start of the Thunderbolts. for a term called V-Max on all of these major servers. I personally thought this immediately we're all thinking that oh V-Max it's the Venom symbiot or

[19:43] something like that. So this leads him to the department of damage control. him an enhanced individual which is how Captain America describes people with >> We have an enhance in the field. And notice that when they take defensive

[19:56] same sonic cannons that we see in the final act of the film. These were developed to stop his webbing, but in future movies they could be used to stop Venom has a weakness for loud noises and fire. These cannons could have also been

[20:08] army used against the Hulk in the Incredible Hulk. And then we meet director William Mezer, played by Tal Tilman or Mr. Milchic from Severance. In Children of the Atom issue 1, where he led an anti-mutant militia. Now, given

[20:23] yet another clue that damage control will shift to neutralizing mutants full-time. Now, when he gives Spidey a tour, we see the shocker gauntlet from like, "We're turning these bad things

[20:36] echoing the sentiment of damage control co-founder Tony Stark from the first people to use his weapons. >> I don't want this one up in the wrong hands. Maybe mine. It can actually do some good. But like Bruce Banner says

[20:49] later on, who gets to decide what is of use? Which powers are deemed good and this, he tells DeWolf that he has every camera in the city looking for something casual joke, but this is actually like this is the same thing Batman did in the

[21:04] Dark Knight that caused Lucius Fox to like leave Wayne Tech. I guess like in a post iPhone world, we're all just used to the ideas of having cameras on us all state. That's what we live in. And then

[21:16] party where MJ tells Ned that she turned down her new job. Then she talks about go to MIT and how something in her life just doesn't feel right. Well, remember it was actually her, Ned, and Peter on that roof. She's also still wearing the

[21:30] Black Dallion necklace. So, something in the back of her mind knows that she's not fulfilling her true purpose. She used to help out a superhero, but now also similar to the terms of Peter's deal with Mesto in the comics when the

[21:43] always know and that something would always feel missing from their lives. By cool. He's come a long way from the guy who wore a dorky hat. >> When Peter gives MJ the flower, she says friendly neighbor, which of course is a

[21:57] neighborhood Spider-Man. Then he almost tells her his name is May before recovering to Maynard. And this is kind of similar to the clone Ben Riley, who took the name of his uncle Ben and May's maiden name, Riley. Also notice that she

[22:09] puts the flowers in a round bottom flask which Walter White told us >> is for general mixing and titration. >> MJ's boyfriend is played by Amanus Fondi Ahsoka. Now I have two reasons to hate him. So when Peter is nosing around

[22:22] his Chewbacca minifig foreshadowing their future bonding over Star Wars kind of lost connection to Peter because he is obsessed with Spider-Man. He says this is because he saved them so much in high school. There was at the Washington

[22:36] On his bulletin board, he's written if the Spider-Man sightings in Europe mean how Tom Holland is English. We also see a German clipping of him in the Berlin Civil War. He's also followed a guy who climbed skyscrapers and notes that his

[22:51] Captain America Civil War was released. And this photo is from the Washington this eliminated guy is wearing a red hoodie, a lot like Peter's first suit. And then this lists his height at 5'7.5 in, which is Tom Holland's actual

[23:06] height. Ned also has a Naruto poster in his room, which is likely a reference to writing and directing the upcoming liveaction movie adaptation of this series. And then he shows off the Spidey Tracker app, which is a real website.

[23:19] You can look at low ress of clips where these battles took place in movies, thing that Ned would put on his site. It also serves as a publicity site where publicity tour. And when he activates it, it even plays the 1960s Spider-Man

[23:33] it, it even plays the 1960s Spider-Man cartoon theme. neighborhood Spider-Man app that lets people alert you to crimes. And Ned is

[23:45] partially based on Genki. Then he unveils the two most likely candidates. actually with them in Washington and in Europe, so that tracks, and their Martin Star. His first appearance in the MCU is actually as this lab worker in

[24:00] confirmed is the same guy. Also notice the photo of Flash is the same as on the cover of his book Flashoint, My Life as Spider-Man's Best Friend. Peter leaves he has a taste of a fun life, his isolation starts to really manifest

[24:15] headaches for a while, but now his organic webbing starts to manifest. And of course, Spider-Man always uses web shooters in the comics. And the idea of James Cameron's Spider-Man film before Sam Ramy used it in his trilogy. And No

[24:29] were shocked by this. >> You can't do that, huh? >> No. How on earth does that even? Now, in Spider-Man 2, Toby's powers faded because of a mental block which led to him embracing the Peter Parker identity.

[24:42] In this movie, the opposite happens. His spider powers increase because he's so focused on being Spider-Man. He takes to the rooftop to learn to use his new webs leads to him waking up in a cocoon just like in our t-shirt, the spider. Now,

[24:55] the idea of him molting and transforming is from a few Spider-Man stories like series or in the classic Amazing Spider-Man 100 when he takes a potion that gives him multiple arms. I should also note that when the black costume

[25:08] outside with no idea how he got there. And when he wakes up, his face is half lit, half dark, a motif used to express his dual identity that we will see the alley where he has to relearn using his powers. emulating Toby in Spider-Man

[25:22] 1. And also, just like in Spider-Man 2, he falls when his powers malfunction, which led to this joke. My back. were rumors that Toby was dropping out because of back problems. Normally in

[25:35] superhero sequels, the hero loses their powers, including in Spider-Man 2. So, this movie is a reversal of that trope. Eevee says that two causes for trauma and prolonged isolation, which means that I should be getting spider

[25:48] powers any day now. Also, because Peter's senses are amplified, I wonder having looked for Daredevil to help. The two team up all the time in the comics, and I have been waiting to see this team up on screen for decades now. However,

[26:01] Murdoch was locked up in jail. But I really hope they pay off their meeting >> How did you just do that? I'm a really >> But Peter has to quickly get his together because Scorpion is attacking a

[26:14] protester. In the middle of the fight, Peter goes full arachnid mode. And the mass camera shows us his eyes going black which symbolizes his near lack of humanity as he becomes more spiderlike. And this is all similar to a dark comic

[26:27] story from the 1990s where Peter's life was in shambles and he declared that Peter Parker was no more. There is only the spider. He even wo a cocoon for himself to sleep in to keep the outside world away. This is also similar to

[26:39] Spectacular Spider-Man 216 when Peter fights Mac Gargan and loses control of his temper. And then he takes Scorpion out with a ground strike using two webs like in the PS4 Spidey game. But in the process, he gets angry and loses

[26:51] to seek out someone else with anger issues, Bruce Banner. He goes to Empire State University, the Marvel equivalent of NYU, where Peter went to school in focus on his life as Spider-Man. Just a reminder, you can buy our ESU shirt

[27:05] Banner is already a renowned scientist in this world. There was a photo of him here. Now, Bruce is teaching about quantum mechanics, which makes sense because he just used quantum mechanics to invent time travel. But the class

[27:19] with one girl speaking for the entire internet when she says, "Why couldn't more food instead of killing half the population?" And she's right, by the that show that the population would have replenished itself in like 50 years,

[27:33] fundamentally remake the universe the second time around. I will shred this universe down to its last atom. >> Wait, is this Eric Bana? No. So, brief

[27:45] gone wrong, he started to turn into a big green rage monster called the Hulk. when the transformations happened, but he lost control, then exiled himself to space. After returning to Earth, he decided to put the brains and the brun

[27:59] However, in the show She-Hulk, he revealed that he was wearing an inhibitor to allow his arm to heal. Now later in the show, we do see that he's also still Professor Hulk when he changes back. So in this movie, I think

[28:11] Professor Hulk, but he wears the inhibitor so he can do normalsized CGI budget low. >> You are very expensive. >> Or maybe for the past few years, Bruce has actually been in a losing battle

[28:24] inhibitor to keep the monster at bay. This also leads into the ethical wants to create a new inhibitor that stops all powers, which to Bruce sounds an awful lot like eugenics. Back at his lab, Peter is wearing a t-shirt from

[28:38] Homecoming that was destroyed by Chitauri weapons. And remember, you can buy this shirt at our merch store. And then Keith David is narrating a video on spiders. So, he's not the jackal, just a nature documentary narrator. We were

[28:51] an inhibitor chip that is very similar to the one he created to override Auto Octavius's busted chip in Spider-Man No Way Home. Then on the street, he talks to Gene through this guy whose jacket actually reads brain dead. Appropriate

[29:04] for a guy who's being mind controlled. And as they're talking, Jean is rifling letter. So this is Peter's worst nightmare. He gave up his entire life to keep his friends safe. Now they are still in danger because of him. Now

[29:17] crashing a wedding in a venue that looks a lot like the one from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. This leads into a helicopter chase where Peter webs it to a crane kind of mixing the two towers teaser from Spider-Man 1 and the

[29:30] crane sequence from Amazing Spider-Man 1. And then Pete leaves just fully leaving this helicopter pilot to die and swings off to save MJ. He takes her all Queens, not far from where they shot most of Spider-Man Homecoming. Now, this

[29:43] is the legendary studio where they film The Sopranos and Marvel projects like Daredevil, Born Again, and The Punisher. It's also very very close to the Madam Web. >> Right. Please do not remind me.

[29:56] >> So, this is where Jean really messes with Peter's head. Like, this scene is just cruel. All of a sudden, MJ becomes his dream girl. She finally remembers Peter and I cried like a baby. In fact, our post-production manager, Randolph,

[30:08] >> Yeah, he cried a lot during this movie. >> She name drops Prague, the Washington Monument, and Night Monkey before they share a half mass kiss like the iconic kiss from Spider-Man 1. Then she was just screwing with him. She tells him

[30:21] princess crap, like the kisses that woke up Snow White and Aurora and Sleeping Beauty. But the big knife twist is when she says that MJ would have hated this, which implies that Peter never really knew her, at least not as intimately as

[30:34] off the building, the shot of her falling is mirroring the falling in Spider-Man No Way Home. Now, in that moment, Andrew Garfield Spider-Man was able to redeem when he couldn't save Gwen. Peter 1 apparently learned from

[30:46] catch her. So there's no abrupt stop like in the movie or in the comics that Afterwards, his mask is half lit and half in shadow, symbolizing the secret two halves are at war with each other. To keep her safe, he takes her to

[31:00] Frank's shipyard hideout. Now Frank has experience protecting young women like Amy in the stellar second season of his show. Here he is living in a boat called the Golden Girl, which we first saw in Spectacular Spider-Man 141. Now, all

[31:12] around his hideout, we see photos of his family. Oh, does he have a dead family? I hadn't heard. And then he uses his creepy facial recognition software to determine that the mystery villain is in fact Gan Gray. Now, this is obviously

[31:24] huge for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Gene is the first X-Men to be introduced in this 616 universe. This is not like the multiverse or a variant, and she will be a part of the new X-Men movie being directed by Jake Shrier. Now, in

[31:36] triggered when she was a little girl. Jean saw her childhood friend Annie die which triggered her mutation and suddenly she was reading her thoughts as Annie's death is replaced with Sarah's. Sarah does die later in the comics, but

[31:50] time. Charles helped her work through this trauma and she became his first student. Later, she would become the final member of the original five X-Men for decades now. For years in the comics, Gene held her powers back. But

[32:03] the cosmic entity, the Phoenix Force, sensed her power and took her place, kicking off the epic Phoenix saga that ended in her first death. First death, it's complicated. This movie also has similarities to her origin. Her powers

[32:15] her sister, Sarah. She also shows that she has enormous telepathic and future movies, she'll be afraid of up an X-Men movie where the mutants are runaways that the professor slowly

[32:29] that immediately after we learn her identity, there is an X on the wall behind Frank. Similarly, the V-Max vent at the end of the film also looks like an X, foreshadowing her eventual found family, the X-Men. Later, Peter and MJ

[32:43] similar to their late night phone calls and No Way Home. Just like in that movie, she helps him work on his tech, but immediately recognizes the ethical problems behind this device. She says, "This is the kind of thing you put on a

[32:55] monster." And later on, Damage Control does use this against Gene. Now, we have theorized for months now that damage control will eventually use this tech to we saw in Deadpool 2. And remember, they were also used to enslave mutants in

[33:08] a similar collar used against Wanda Maximoff in Captain America: Civil War. And it's only a matter of time before damage control starts to label mutants as monsters, just like MJ said. So, while MJ is talking about being

[33:21] empathetic to the monsters, Frank advocates just putting them down. They are the angel and devil on Peter's shoulders. Notice how in this scene, we It's like for just a moment, we can glimpse at him as he is slightly

[33:34] dropping his guard to let someone into his life. However, later on, Peter keeps and he tells him that he thinks the two of them are alike. They each have their missions. But Frank responds by saying that his life is a curse. He doesn't

[33:46] criminals, but he has to be. He is the One Last Kill special was about. Just when Frank finally avenged his evil in the world. So, he had to kill this dog murdering

[34:00] >> So, Gene is breaking into the damage control HQ from earlier. And when Peter been in control of Bruce Banner. When the fight starts, she is fully the fight, you can see her struggle every time Banner is harmed. This is

[34:15] because the fight is making him angry and slowly unleashing the other guy. But at this point in the movie, every single character is losing the battle against their inner demons. Peter is letting the arachnid take over. Frank is a complete

[34:27] lost cause. Gene is hellbent on revenge. And Banner can't control the Hulk. the only thing keeping the monster inside, meaning that he knew he was slowly losing control of the monster. He even says she broke something, meaning

[34:41] the barrier between him and the Hulk is starting to erode. Then he says it's the other guy, the nickname he used for him in the Avengers. And what if the other >> And when he transforms, he says, >> "No, Banner, only."

[34:55] >> A classic line from the comics. Now, earlier in the movie, Banner was able to his student says, >> "Hulk smash." >> But now, the other guy is officially back, and Banner's life will never be

[35:08] the same. And when he transforms into original Hulk form, he is massive, almost like the Hulk has been buried for years, building up strength until he was to bash him on the floor like he did to Loki in the Avengers. Then, he does the

[35:22] is one of my favorite parts from the underrated game from the 2000s. And I >> Are you just trying to get out of fighting the Hulk? >> Later, he's way out mashed, but he keeps firing bullets at the Hulk. It was my

[35:36] the Hulk. What are you going to do? Tickle him to death. Pete tries to use the Shocker Gauntlet, which by the way, Damage Control reabeled as Gauntlet X, another hidden X in this movie, but Hulk just catches the punch. But the fight

[35:48] ends when Peter comes out and tells him his real name, and says, "I'm your >> Well, it could be that Banner and Peter met at Tony's funeral. It's the only besides the Endgame fight. >> There's an Ant-Man and a Spider-Man.

[36:00] the comics when the forgetting spell affected Bruce Banner, but the Hulk still remembers. Afterwards, Banner is being loaded into an ambulance, and he was hurt. Unfortunately, he's been in this situation before, and he wants to

[36:14] thing's for sure, I think damage control is going to lock him up and slap an yellow jacket like the original Golden Blue X-Men uniforms. Frank walks past the fleshy head of a Chitauri alien pickled for study in the lab. And then

[36:28] Peter, god love this idiot loser, accidentally hands over a device to facilitate genocide to the most dangerous government agency on Earth. her to their facility on Roosevelt Island. Now, this location is iconic for

[36:41] Spider-Man fans because it is where he had his final fight against the Green to the Golden Girl, Peter finds out that the worst possible case scenario has happened. MJ has read the note on her own. Now she's angry that he didn't come

[36:54] find her and tells him that now it's too late. She is a different person and she even refers to his MJ in the third person as her. This is similar to Gamora in Guardians 3. She simply is not the same woman that Peter fell in love with.

[37:07] And it's also like regarding Henry. >> Exactly. High five. She even remembers him from the coffee shop 4 years earlier cuz this kid is a freaking genius. Now, this is followed by the saddest websing scene ever. Earlier, Peter was so happy

[37:20] almost like their first swing at the end of Far From Home. But now, it's all just a downer. So, at the apartment, Ned is watching The Empire Strikes Back, rebels use their toe cables to take down Adats as Peter referenced here. You ever

[37:35] Strikes Back. >> And then, in another scene that made me >> Yeah, he cried a lot during this movie. >> Pete gets to hang out with his buddy again, putting together a Lego X-wing. They even go on a quoting spree from

[37:47] Fellowship of the Ring. >> All right, then. Keep your secrets. If you're referring to the incident with the dragon, I was barely involved. >> Then MJ presents Peter with a drawing of him and Ned, but she drew Peter without

[38:00] the mask, which is her way of encouraging him to tell Ned who he the detention scene in Spider-Man Homecoming when she drew Peter for fun. in crisis. >> And we actually saw that drawing again

[38:13] here in No Way Home. And MJ's new drawing will pop up again in his realizes something is up, he calls Yolena. And we see that her screen name is Macaroni Fiend. As we saw in the show Hawkeye, she loves American Mac and

[38:27] Cheese. Now, after Spidey leaves to save Gene, MJ accidentally calls him Peter. Much like Gwen Stacy did here in Amazing Spider-Man 2. In fact, that was a real blooper, and Emma Stone's reaction was real. Mezer is trying to study and copy

[38:39] Gan's abilities. But just like in the movie Deadpool, this prolonged trauma just helps her unlock her full potential. As I said earlier, this is also similar to the comics where Jean basically holds back a lot of her powers

[38:51] Force. Kind of. It's complicated, but what I said is mostly true. So, in the over their shared abilities. And they mentioned their mom left when they powers first manifested at the start of puberty, just like other mutants. And

[39:06] notice that no one in the MCU has actually ever said the word mutant. Just this like a mutation. I wonder if they're saving that big moment for the is also gold and blue, the colors of the X-Men uniforms. And I wonder if Gene

[39:19] will eventually get to pick the uniform's color in the X-Men movie, and to her sister. So, Mezzer was able to partially copy Sarah's abilities, which Hand. Wait, who are they? >> So, the Hand are a ninja death cult

[39:33] comics. They appeared in Daredevil season 2, and they were the main antagonist that brought together the Defenders in their limited series. Those 3 of Born Again. So, it wouldn't surprise me if The Hand were going to

[39:46] return as the villains. Here they are wearing comic accurate red uniforms. And they address how they were mind controlled by the government. Okay, a couple highlights from this fight. The Hand are able to fly around the room by

[39:58] using wirework pioneered in classic kung fu films and of course made famous in The Matrix and Crouching Tiger Hidden some stretching jokes, and says, "I'm not in high school anymore."

[40:11] grown up since Homecoming. And all of this leads to the saddest reveal of the movie. Jean looks up at the vent over her head and sees the label has peeled off to read V-Max. Her sister's dying thought wasn't a clue. It was a whisper.

[40:26] She was just projecting the last thing she saw. But Gene, in a very childlike way, amplified this to have a much bigger meaning. Gan then fully unlocks her potential and her powers manifest as blue and pink energy just like in the

[40:38] telepathy to freeze everyone in place, but she also uses telekinesis. Notice how the boat in the harbor also isn't moving. She would also use telekinesis And I also think the new Avengers are all vulnerable to this telepathic

[40:52] attack. So now Spider-Man is the only hero in the city that can take her down. Bixby's named after Bill Bixby, the first actor to play the Hulk. In the arachnid mode, we hear his theme for Spider-Man Homecoming, but now it's

[41:06] somber tone. In the fight against the hand, Peter's webs are useless. The damage control cannons keep him pinned down. And this is when Gene asks him, this conflict has been present all through the movie, even visualized by

[41:20] these two energy meters of his DNA. But when he answers both, he has finally of Spider-Man 1 when he chose to save both Mary Jane and the children on the Roosevelt Island tram. So in this fight he uses a web spin which is an ability

[41:33] from the game Marvel Rivals. And we also see that his organic webbing is so strong it can rip a sword in half. So in this final scene his mask is off and he is fighting as Peter Parker and not as Spider-Man showing he has finally

[41:45] embraced both halves of his life. Now I covered a lot of this in our ending rehash everything but I do want to point out some new details. Gene is able to freeze Peter in place with telekinesis, but then is surprised by him inviting

[41:58] her into his mind. So, this is crucial because it's an act of empathy of finally opening up to others that allows Gene to also learn empathy from his memory of Aunt May. She learns that she cannot do this alone. And like Peter,

[42:10] she needs a found family. But from a nearby rooftop, Frank takes movie, Spider-Man warned him that innocent people would get hurt. And now Frank actually sees the cost of his war. Peter has now become collateral damage.

[42:24] killed a hero in one of the bravest men the Belleview Hospital, replicating this classic comic panel from Civil War issue 5. Over the next few days, we see the city uniting behind Spider-Man with the

[42:37] colors. And notice we see Avengers Tower here. This kid is wearing the hoodie I'm sure those original YouTube videos have racked up millions of views as Spider-Man became more famous. Do you think he monetizes his channel? I do

[42:51] for all the gear in his apartment. It's why he doesn't need a job. At his bedside, Frank gets misty, telling him, "I've seen a lot of bravery in my day, time in the war and his fellow Marines." When Peter teases him about crying,

[43:05] time in his own show. >> Nothing to do. >> Pete leaves the hospital symbolically leaving Spider-Man behind as Frank takes his place. He's able to take a moment to appreciate their adoration like Toby did

[43:17] >> They love me. Afterwards, we see him on a roof with a new coffee cup, maybe symbolizing that he's ready to move on from MJ. But she is on a different roof, that he gave her, showing that while he's moving on, a part of her still

[43:31] longs to be with Peter. And finally, Pete sees Ned again, and after their special handshake, he remembers. So, in our ending explained video, I theorize that this is because Ned has magical abilities, as we saw in No Way Home. And

[43:43] like the endings of the home trilogy. Gene ventures upstate, maybe to a mansion in Westchester. There's also an important detail in the ending explained. Peter's signal doesn't actually disappear from Queens. It stays

[43:57] on the Spidey Tracker app. Instead, a second signal appears in space. So, I think this is setting up that another Spider-Man, hopefully Tobey Maguire, is making his return in Avengers Doomsday. Shout out to the account Marvel Insights
