[00:00] Good in the morning, super and friendos. It is bright and early here on Wednesday, November 12th, and we're here to watch the first trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy movie,

[00:13] which is just about five minutes away. I'm Logan Plant, joined by Nick Lamone. Good morning, Nick. Good morning. And Brian Lozano. Good morning. Happy Mario Day. Happy Mario Day.

[00:25] Two minutes to go. First look at the second Mario movie. It's the Mario Galaxy movie. We're probably going to get a voice reveal for Rosalina, maybe a voice reveal for Yoshi, if Yoshi's going to talk, which is kind of a question also.

[00:37] But, Nick, I'll throw you first. What's your prediction for some celebrity casting for these two characters? All right, hear me out right now. Rosalina, just because she's been back on the publicity circuit and she has a new movie and there's that tendency for actors

[00:50] to always just continue to act once they appear and, like, press stuff, I'm going to say Jennifer Lawrence for Rosalina. Okay. or and this is my this is my give me one more it's uh Julia Garner just because

[01:04] I think she's starting to gain a lot of momentum uh Julia Garner being uh she was recently in weapons uh she's been a silver surfer in the new fantastic four I think she could be a good

[01:16] fit if they want to go like a more ethereal entity but Jennifer Lawrence I feel is right at home with the rest of the frankly wild cast of the Mario movie. Dude, I was right there

[01:28] on Jennifer Lawrence also. I don't know why we both went to that. For her, it was either Jennifer Lawrence or Ariana Grande. That was my other call. Oh, that's not a bad call, yes. I mean, Wicked for Good is going to be done if she needs a new movie.

[01:43] That's true. I think it's Sabrina Carpenter. That's my wild, awful call. Okay, alright. And there'll be some Sabrina Carpenter song and the licensed soundtrack. You know what? You're probably more right.

[01:58] What about Yoshi? Is Yoshi going to talk? Is Yoshi going to have a voice? I feel like we're split on this. I think he definitely is, but I don't know if you guys are sure. Yoshi's going to talk. I think it's going to be one of those situations where I would assume Yoshi is a baby at the beginning of the movie

[02:10] because Mario finds spoilers for the Mario movie in the post-credits scene. Mario finds the egg at the end of the movie. Young Yoshi only says his name, and then at the end of the movie he says Mario or something, and it's going to be played by Sophia Lillis,

[02:23] Calvert. I've seen theories on Yoshi. First of all, I like your thing, but in the game, Yoshi's a baby for like 40 seconds and then you feed it some more apples

[02:35] and then it becomes an adult. But I've seen theories that it'll be a Silent Bob situation where it won't talk for the whole movie and at the very end it'll say something really profound. I can see that.

[02:48] I think it's Vin Diesel. because he made a career out of just saying one word repeatedly in the three Guardians of the Galaxy movies. If he just says Yoshi a lot, they can pitch shift his voice up.

[03:00] I think a lot of people will buy tickets just for that. And by a lot of people, I mean absolutely nobody. Okay, Vin Diesel as Yoshi. That would be wild. I do think we're going to get some wild casting announcements.

[03:12] Probably not as crazy as the first one because nobody knew what to expect. And then it was Chris Pratt and Seth Rogen and just a bunch of crazy names voicing these characters. but now we kind of know that's what they did the first time around, so I don't think it'll be as wild this time, no matter who it is.

[03:25] No, I think we're going to get Wario and Waluigi today. I hope so. That's not canon in Galaxy. They're not in Galaxy, Brian. How is that possible? You know what? I'm going to turn in my Nintendo Switch.

[03:39] No, I think it just makes sense because those are great characters. Otherwise, you save those for the third movie, but I don't think they're going to do that. I think they're going to be here, even though it doesn't make sense to have them in space. And I think we're going to finally get the Danny DeVito Wario that everybody wants.

[03:54] Oh, that'd be great. That would be great. We are just one minute out from seeing the first Super Mario Galaxy movie trailer, and stick around afterwards because we're going to do a live post show where we're going to break down all of our first impressions of what we see today.

[04:06] Any final predictions, any references, anything we're going to see in this trailer? This is going to break box office records when it comes out again. A two billion dollars this time.

[04:18] Easily. easily. I do like that there's an image that they put out that has a toad holding a Mario doll. So that means that Mario is like a hit now.

[04:30] They know him all over the world, all over the galaxy. It's a good thing about him coping with fame, I think. Oh. He has to go face to center himself?

[04:42] Yeah. I think Rosalina's going to be revealed to be Peach's mom in the movie universe. what? And that's going to help us on the show. It's going to help us. Because in the first movie they, like,

[04:54] Peach is looking out into the stars and she's like, I don't really know where I came from. It's like, yeah, now the next movie is the Galaxy movie. Is that the extra lore that they added via the storybook chapters? Yeah, the physical

[05:06] storybook you can buy. No, that was about like two Lumos or something. All right, here we go. Stick around. We're going to watch the Super Mario Galaxy movie Nintendo Direct right now.

[05:18] Here we go!

[05:32] Hello everyone, I'm Shigeru Miyamoto from Nintendo. Today, I'd like to show you the first trailer for the second Mario movie, the Super Mario Galaxy movie.

[05:44] This time, Mario will embark on a journey into space. When we announced the movie title this past September, it was well received by many people from around the world.

[05:56] Thank you to everyone who's looking forward to this movie, just as you did for the previous one. Now let's hear some remarks by Tristan from Illumination who's producing the movie with me.

[06:09] Tristan, thank you, Miyamoto-san. A kiss from his audience. Give it to Kirsten, I love it.

[06:34] Oreo. Lemio Cooper. Thank you, Chris-san.

[06:46] Okay, thank you all for waiting. Let's press the start button. Oh, we're going right into it.

[07:14] Hey big guy! Oh yeah, he's tiny. Don't move, I'll be right up. Get the food.

[07:26] Clean up the table. I'm off the table. Here we go.

[07:39] Hey Luigi. What's up Mario? Behold! I made a masterpiece of Princess Peach. What do you think? Love the h- It's trash.

[07:52] How dare you look at my nice looking to say that! Oh, Bowser, get off your boat! Wow! Sorry about that. That's the old Bowser talking.

[08:05] Still working through my demons, I suppose. Anyway, I need my eight hours or else I really turn into a monster. Ha, ha, ha, ha!

[08:25] Oh, man. I've got the tears. That's really cool. Wahoo! Oh, Odyssey.

[08:37] Odyssey stuff. Bowser Jr. I'm Bowser Jr. And I'm going to be taking my father now! Who is that?

[08:54] Hmm. Princess Rosalina, you're coming with me!

[09:08] How was that?

[09:22] When it comes to Super Mario Galaxy, we can't talk about it without mentioning Rosalina. What key do you think she holds in this story? And standing in her future way is Bowser.

[09:35] He takes the place of Bowser, who ate a mini mushroom and shrank at the end of the last movie. Great. Oh, here's the cast. In addition to our returning cast who we announced in the last Direct,

[09:47] we are thrilled to share two talented individuals who will be voicing Rosalina and Bowser Jr. First, let's introduce our cosmic protector.

[10:00] Once upon a time There was a brave and noble princess named Peach I want to hear the story about the plover We did that one last night Pover plover plover it Okay Rosalina is being brought to the big screen by Academy Award winner

[10:25] and Nintendo Super fans, Brie Larson. Oh! Oh, there it is! She's a villain with galactic ambition. From the ashes of his father's defeat,

[10:37] rises a new conqueror. The Bowser name shall be feared once more! The role of Bowser Jr. is being played by... Wow, wow, wow, wow!

[10:50] Chris-san! If anyone's going to be announcing Bowser Jr., it's got to be his papa. The floor is all yours. I appreciate that, Chris-san. Hello, Nintendo!

[11:02] We have royalty in our midst. He is the heir to the Koopa throne, a rowdy little bundle, an untouched young... He's very trusty! I have to say, I am so excited that Galaxy is going to be the inspiration for this movie.

[11:22] Everyone knows it's the best video game of all time. My boys, when I told them I was going to be in Galaxy, they were like, no way it's going to be Galaxy. I'm like, yeah, it's going to be Galaxy. And you know, my boys are saying that.

[11:34] There's kids all over the world saying that. How special is this part? I can't wait for everyone all over the world to experience the sheer creative magnitude of the characters words and sweet sweet score of this film

[11:48] Chris can I please be the one who throws back the Miamosa time like I could stop you you couldn't back to you Miamosa I'm back

[12:00] that's great thank you thank you Jackson and Chris please look forward Sabree Larson as the elegant Rosalina

[12:12] and Benny Sassi as the mischievous Bowser Jr. We have the latest info about the Super Mario Galaxy movie on the smart device app Nintendo Today,

[12:24] so we hope you'll check that out. And by your checking Nintendo Today, you can also watch the Pikmin Close to You videos if you haven't yet. Okay, that's all for now. Please subscribe to the channel and we'll see you next spring.

[12:38] See you later! Okay. Okay. This is the first one. Well, hold on.

[12:50] We just saw the debut trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy movie. Logan Plant here with Brian Altano and Nick Lamont. Brian, first impressions. Okay, can I just say real quick that it is blowing my mind that Shigeru Miyamoto has probably seen Uncut Gems.

[13:04] They dropped an Uncut Gems reference in the Nintendo Direct. like have you guys seen that movie yes a long time ago yeah okay it's an amazing film and one of the least Nintendo things I could possibly imagine

[13:16] um yeah I'm in that trailer looked great I'm super hyped for this I cannot believe that they name dropped uncut gems today that is blowing my mind yeah Nick your first impressions

[13:28] I mean I love me some uncut gems but I think it's even wilder to imagine they're like Miyamoto just you know Don Drake was sitting in the movie theater after Good Time ends,

[13:40] and he goes, you know who'd be good for Bowser Jr.? Which is another Sassy Brothers movie. Yeah, this seems, honestly, I feel like I'm kicking myself now because I realized Bowser Jr. was probably going to be featured in this movie,

[13:54] and lo and behold, he is. I think this is cute. It looks more action-packed than the first one. very wild to see the Mad Max take on like them going to the

[14:06] Super Mario Odyssey level I thought that was really neat and yeah it'll be a charming good time yeah we got I mean we talked a little bit before the trailer that we hope that this movie leans more into Mario music and there was an orchestral

[14:20] rendition of the Mario theme in the trailer again we just hope that they carry through and do that for the actual movie itself I thought this looked great they're referencing a ton of games in here just like We've only seen the trailer the one time, but we had, like, Toad Serena, the desert area from Super Mario Odyssey was in here.

[14:35] And then Bowser Jr.'s design is what he looks like when he has wonder effects in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. So it's not just Galaxy. It's a lot more than that. And, yeah, I thought it was really good. Yeah, the Galaxy format, I think more so than just having, like, warp pipes, really gives them a lot of creative leeway to go anywhere, right?

[14:53] Like, you can just hop off of a planet, land somewhere else, and just, you know, showcase an entire Mario game that we've never seen on film before. This trailer was surprisingly light on action from Mario specifically, which is a little odd.

[15:07] Like, it's actually mostly about Bowser, and you get a little bit of Rosalina, but it was cool seeing... My first guess was just, like, are they doing Mario Paint, but with Bowser? just because he's holding the paintbrush.

[15:20] But the paintbrush thing is something they've worked in with numerous Mario games before, and so I love it. It's also, it's so vibrant. This is such a gorgeous-looking movie, just like the first one. And, yeah, they're bringing back the cast from the first one,

[15:33] so it's stacked. And then, you know, Benny Safdie from the hit film, I'm not sure if I can't get over. Yeah, this looks really fun. No Wario or Waluigi, so I still think they're going to show up in the movie.

[15:46] Maybe it'll be a cameo, maybe a post-credits thing, but I think they'll have a good excuse to land somewhere and find them. And also, no Yoshi. Yoshi did not really appear in this trailer. He's a character that has been teased.

[15:59] He was leaked through multiple products like Old Spice and, what is it, Pilferry Cookies. So we know what Yoshi looks like in this movie. He's going to be in it, but we did not see him today, so maybe he won't be voiced like we thought

[16:11] because they announced their kind of new celebrity casting today with Benny Safian. Brie Larson as Rosalina, which makes a ton of sense, but yeah, we didn't see Yoshi yet. Brie Larson was doing press for Nintendo what was it? Was it last year?

[16:25] And they had basically brought her on as like a brand ambassador. And I went to New York City and I interviewed her and talked about Smash Brothers and Princess Peach Showtime, and she's a huge Nintendo

[16:37] fan, so it makes a ton of sense. Jack Black was the same deal where he's just a big Nintendo fan, and it's like they're not just pulling in people who don't know the source material at all. These are people that were lifelong Nintendo fans, and that's really cool to see.

[16:51] Yeah, absolutely. Nick, any other first thoughts? I mean, Brian kind of touched on it a bit, but I do think that they're really leaning into the Bowser of it all because I feel like Bowser was the big breakout star of the first movie given the pieces of it all, and I feel like that's a smart move.

[17:06] And honestly, I'm going to be controversial here and say I'm going to watch anything that Jack Black did because he's always fun to watch on screen, whether it be voicing a character or actually acting,

[17:18] I think he's always a good crowd pleaser, if you will. I mean, he's such a good get for this because, like you said, Nick, he's not only voice acting, he's providing soundtrack songs

[17:31] that became number one hits, right? At least specifically in my car, thanks to my kid requesting it for like four months straight. So, yeah, you're getting somebody who's a great voice actor who can also put out great music.

[17:43] and that's what these movies need, right? Also, we got to see a boss fight, which is really cool. I love that. This is just a straight-up Super Mario Galaxy boss fight that they put in the movie with Rosalina as the playable character now.

[17:56] Do we... Logan, you have a theory that Rosalina is Peach's mom? Yeah, or they're related or something just because the first Super Mario Bros. movie,

[18:08] Peach looks out into space and there's a scene with Mario with the fire flowers where she doesn't know where she comes from or something like that. And, yeah, they were choosing Galaxy there. I thought it would take a while to get to Galaxy. I think we all thought Mario World was going to be next.

[18:21] That title even leaked at some point. But, no, it's Galaxy, so they're going straight to it. So I expect there to be some sort of connection that doesn't necessarily mean it's canon in the games, but in the movie universe, I think that they're going to connect

[18:33] Peach and Rosalina in some way. But those are our first thoughts about the Super Mario Galaxy movie, and you can get conversations like this every week on Nintendo VoiceJet, IGN's all Nintendo podcast on the IGN Games YouTube channel and your favorite podcast app.

[18:47] And this live post show is only part one of a huge week on NBC because I played over an hour of Metroid Prime 4 Beyond on Twitch too and I'm going to tell you all about it this Friday, November 14th on NBC. So make sure you're subscribed to the IGN Games YouTube channel

[19:00] where we drop full episodes every Friday morning. We're also on your favorite podcast app. Just search for Nintendo Voice Chat. You won't want to miss the first in-depth impressions of Metroid Prime 4 this Friday. Also this week on IGN, we're revealing the top 100 Nintendo games of all time.

[19:15] We're revealing 20 entries a day now through Friday, with a video of the entire list going up on Saturday. And we'll also break down that list on NBC later this week. And you know what's in that top 100? Super Mario Galaxy. I'll tease that right now.

[19:27] I don't think it's in the reveal. But yeah, Super Mario Galaxy is in it. Those games 1 and 2 came to Switch earlier this year. That's kind of a ramp up into this movie. So let's get back into more impressions of the movie. Now, let's talk about that Rosalina's observatory scene we saw at the end where she's reading kind of the story time to the Lumas.

[19:44] This was in the Brie Larson cast announcement. This is like some of people's favorite part about the Galaxy games is the Rosalina story, and I thought it was cool to see that kind of being retold in the movie. Yeah, and it seems like Nintendo's been putting a heavy emphasis on the storybook nature of,

[19:58] like the storybook aspect of Galaxy 1 and 2 where the Switch 2 re-release is featuring new content, which is kind of wild to me. I haven't actually played any of the new content yet, but I'm not sure if that...

[20:10] Maybe there's some hidden lore bonds in there that establish that Rosalina does indeed have a daughter named Peach, but I doubt it. I feel like that would have broken by now. No, the new lore is... It's like a storybook specifically for Galaxy 2,

[20:23] and it's telling a story about, like, two Lumas who are finding each other again after getting separated or something like that. No, no, no. Or later. What that could be It called Parallel Logan Okay and it a parallel between peace and no Alita I think you I think you giving a movie and a game series that plot is usually just

[20:43] get to the end of the castle. I don't think they're choosing those stories. They made two movies about it, Logan. They made movies about it. What's the story of the first movie?

[20:55] Brotherhood. It's about brotherhood. It's about that you guys told me before. It's about family. It's about that's about taking care of your Italian brother. I've been there. I hope that Mario and Luigi are together more in this movie.

[21:10] It looks like they are. That's them on the motorcycles together in the Mad Max desert, right? Because they are separated for almost the entirety of the first movie, and I think it'd be fun to see more of their relationship on screen together in this one. I mean, one thing I kind of,

[21:22] and this is like the greedy gamer side of my brain that just wants to be like, oh, I wonder what kind of fun references they're going to have in this movie. Like, in the first movie, they had Luigi's Mansion very clearly as part of, like, the, you know, D-plot of the story.

[21:36] So I'm curious, like, what's the state of that mansion, Luigi? Do you own it now? Like, are you running a cleaning service? Like, what's going on? I need to know what Luigi's doing because I think as much as I love a Mario movie, I think a Luigi's Mansion movie would hit.

[21:53] That'd be really fun. I would like if they drop one right before Halloween next year or the year after, I would be so into that. Maybe one of those shorts, like the Pikmin one, but with Luigi cleaning up the mansion.

[22:05] Speaking of Pikmin, my theory for this movie for a while has been they will briefly crash land on a planet that has Pikmin on it and then blast off to another planet and just keep the plot going. Oh, my gosh. Like I said before, I think the galaxy mechanism, it gives them a lot of opportunity to just reference stuff

[22:23] and briefly, you know, throw to a place where it wouldn't make sense to spend a lot of time on or do a whole film about, but you could just be like, okay, Pickman was here. Bye. And the people in the theater are just like, wait, was that Pickman?

[22:37] Because there was a scene in the first movie where they just kind of fly by a bunch of Yoshis running, right? Yeah. And so I think that's the kind of stuff that we're going to keep seeing here. How long do we think that Bowser's going to be tiny?

[22:49] Because I feel like they're going to play with that bit for a little bit, and then they're going to blow him up and he's going to be the big bad again. I think it's going to be Bowser Jr. is the big bad, and I think he's going to remain tiny,

[23:01] because that's a fun dynamic of the little guy is actually not the little guy, it's my dad, who's now the little guy. I think that's sort of interesting. I think he's going to stay small, and I think to your point on Pikmin, that castle can house a couple Pikmin in it, the miniature castle.

[23:16] So I feel like he'll be right at home taking up residence in that little castle. wasn't he just in a small cage at the end of the first movie? Did they just build him his own castle? Yeah, Bowser's all about pretty great.

[23:30] Yeah. You know, we were kind of speculating that there'd be, like, a potential Smash Brothers post-credits scene, but I think now that we have that tiny castle, it's more likely a sword falls through it and we just get a Super Mario RPG scene.

[23:42] Oh, my God. It does look like that. Yeah. Yeah, that's great. I think it's going to be Bowser Jr.'s movie, and then maybe they'll shrink him and put him in the castle with Bowser at the end.

[23:54] And then they'll both blow up for the third one and be the big bads again. Oh, no, Wario and Waluigi. It looks like a good movie. Which do you think? I was going to say, I think they'll be the post-credits singer.

[24:07] I wanted it to be Smash. I think that maybe they'll do that for the third movie. Or they'll just make a Smash Brothers movie. We all really want a Smash Brothers movie. But it's a bummer because they mentioned Uncut Gems. Wario loves Uncut Gems. That's a piece of big fun.

[24:19] I mean, a standalone Wario movie would be kind of fun. A standalone Wario movie, Nick. He's just trying to steal a bunch of stuff.

[24:32] It'd be great. That is going direct to DVDs that they sell at gas stations. There's no way. Yeah, who would be voicing Ashley the Witch from the WarioWare games? Yeah, we don't need that.

[24:45] I agree. They'll be the post-credits spinger this time. If we shrink Bowser and Bowser Jr. and they're down for the count, maybe Wario and Waluigi are the villains of the third movie. That would be really, really fun to see. I liked a lot of the references in this.

[24:58] I think that the most iconic part of Galaxy is, like, it's planets. It's spherical things that you platform on. Like, that is only really in those games. It's pulled off the best there. It is so recognizable. And so to see Toad and Peach jump into, like, the Stargate

[25:12] and launch to that, like, round ocean planet filled with bloopers and cheat sheets. I thought that just looked gorgeous. I thought that was the most stunning shot of the trailer. We also saw, like, a quick tease of the casino planet that has, like, a bunch of coins and, like, very lively, like, casino tables

[25:28] with the, what's the ninja enemy called? Ninjis. Ninjis. Mario is being attacked by a ton of ninjis as well. So I was like, okay, I recognize all that. Yeah, they're just burning everything.

[25:41] Like, they're using every game here in this movie. We got our Ocean Family with bloopers, cheap cheats. We got the Odyssey Desert. We got Peach fighting off ninjis in, like, the casino plant with the roulette table.

[25:53] And then, presumably, this is, like, Rosalina's Castle. Yeah, or is it Peach's Castle? Is it the observatory? Or is it Peach's Castle? Oh, it's probably the observatory. Yeah, or Peach's Castle goes to space in Galaxy.

[26:07] That's got to be it. And it's Paper Mario. Yeah, they list it up in there. Yeah. And then this boss here, it's the one in Galaxy that you fight with, like, the drill where it's walking around, like the round dirt thing, and you have to drill underneath to hit the bottom of it.

[26:21] So, cool stuff. Yeah, this is a good trailer. This portion is also the first time we've seen Rosalina wielding her moveset from Smash Brothers. Like, yeah. Because she doesn't do anything in Galaxy 1 and 2, but in Smash Brothers, she uses her wand to attack enemies.

[26:36] So, maybe a fun little tease? Who knows? Yeah. I don't know. You guys want a Smash Brothers movie? I don't know if I really buy it. It's too early. They've got to have, like, at least eight different Nintendo property movies.

[26:50] Otherwise, it's just going to be Mario vs. Link, which would be entertaining, but doesn't really sustain the joy of the Smash Brothers, you know? And also, yeah, we were talking about this before we started recording today, but those are completely different mediums.

[27:03] Like, one is animated and one is live action. So you'd have to figure out a way to do, like, an animated version. I actually, I do want a live-action Smash Brothers, though. You know, you guys know about, like, that wrestling match that's, like, lost media?

[27:15] No. Yeah. Uh-huh. I want that. Yeah, no, to promote Smash, the 64, the first Smash Brothers game, Nintendo got a bunch of people in costumes to beat each other up in real life,

[27:28] and they, I think they live-streamed it or filmed it, but no one can find the full footage. There's just, like, a couple of people. Oh, that rocks. So I want that. But if they're going by, like, the MCU, Slam Fest 99 is the name of it.

[27:41] Yeah. So if you have that at your house for some bizarre reason, stop being greedy. Put it on the Internet for everybody to see. I want to see you guys take it. Send it to IGN. We'll promote it. We'll figure out.

[27:53] I have something cool to do with it. Send it to IGN. We'll preserve it forever. So if you're going by, like, MCU Avengers standards, basically, you'd have to get, like, what, four solo movies out before you do a Smash Brothers thing?

[28:05] But I don't think they need to do that. I think they're moving pretty quick here. We all thought they would go from the Super Mario Bros. movie to Super Mario World and then to Galaxy. And they just jumped right to Galaxy. They're throwing in a bunch of, you know, deeper cut characters immediately.

[28:19] They're already doing Bowser Jr. And, you know, we talked about how we saw references to Mario Wonder, Mario Odyssey. Like, is he going to get Cappy in this movie? Or is he cool?

[28:31] Really cool. Yeah, do we want to see Chris Pratt's Mario? just capture everything on screen. So weird how little Mario was in this. Like you mentioned, like he's barely, it does, it almost feels like Mario is not the star of these movies.

[28:44] I don't know. It's like they really lean into Jack Black like we talked about, which makes sense. He's super charismatic, big fan of the stuff and had that hit song from the first one. Yeah, I'm just really surprised that these trailers never seem to lean that much into Mario.

[28:58] I mean, even Luigi, I feel like has a little bit more of a standout role to me than Mario in the first movie, but maybe I'm just a Luigi fan. I don't know. Yeah, no, I think Luigi's, like, the highlight of the first movie. I love Charlie Day's Luigi in the first movie.

[29:12] Yeah, I agree. And not to get too, like, you know, inside Mario lore nuts, but, like, the whole painting of all this stuff, this is very clearly how Bowser Jr., like, gets his abilities, right? Like, this little opening gag up front where he's painting a dead Mario,

[29:27] like, that's just straight out of Sunshine with Bowser Jr. I wonder if we're going to see Bowser Jr. become the Shadow Mario from Sunshine, because he still has that little bandana that, granted, he has sported since then,

[29:39] but it feels like you've got to be like an evil Mario, especially to Brian's point earlier. If Mario has become this sort of superhero in the Mushroom Kingdom, what better way to tarnish Mario's name than to pretend to do crimes as Mario,

[29:54] like the setup of Mario Sunshine, where Mario goes to prison. I think at the start of the movie you're going to get Peach and Mario on vacation and they'll do the Sunshine reference

[30:06] and then exactly what you said, Nick, that's how they'll tie in Bowser Jr. That's how I'm doing. Exciting incidents for those in the industry. I do wonder if they are moving a little too fast going straight to Galaxy

[30:20] because these movies print money. They're going to make more of them. They've made four Despicable Me's and two Minions with more on the way. They're like, there's going to be Mario movies for the foreseeable future. And it's like, yeah, it's an interesting call to go this fast to the galaxy.

[30:32] It doesn't mean they can't go back and do, like, a world later or a sunshine later, but I don't know. I think that they jumped ahead 20 years in Mario history in one movie. Do you think, yeah, they can circle back and do some street-level Mario stuff if they want to.

[30:47] Yeah, they can. I mean, with Wart and Birdo and all that. It a Mario movie too Yeah totally yeah and you know when I think about a Smash Bros movie this is like a super this doesn matter and they could easily work around it but Smash Bros

[31:00] is just a kid playing with his toys. Like, it is not actually these characters meeting. It's not the Mario from the Mario universe meeting Link. It's the kid, like, slamming action figures together. So, I, and Nintendo did that

[31:12] because they didn't want Pikachu and Link to, like, be canonically taking the crap out of each other. They don't want their heroes to be fighting. I wonder if Nintendo wants to do a Smash Bros. movie where their biggest heroes fight each other.

[31:25] What kind of setup of that would be? Isn't that basically the reveal at the end of a Lego movie? That is, yeah. Yeah, like you pull out and you're just like, oh, this is just a table full of toys that a grown-up has been playing with.

[31:41] Or a kid has invaded a grown-up's space where they have a bunch of toys. I'm cool with that. It'd be cool. And, I mean, I think there is that novelty of seeing just, you know, different IP fight each other, which has always been the, you know, the appeal of something like Smash Brothers.

[31:56] But I kind of feel like it's more likely that it would just be something like a Mario Party movie or Mario and Donkey Kong at the 2028 LA Olympics or something like that.

[32:10] There was a, wasn't, didn't they, there was like a trademark thing that they put up for the Donkey Kong movie? Yeah, really. There was some legal teases that Nintendo is making a Donkey Kong movie.

[32:23] Donkey Kong did not appear in the trailer. Seth Rogen's DK, who I also love in the first movie. Fantastic. The frenemy relationship between Mario and DK is really good. Because they're like rivals, but DK's not evil like Bowser. I thought that they did that really well in the first movie.

[32:36] I wanted to see him here. And maybe he's not going to be in this. Maybe there's going to be a Donkey Kong Country movie instead that he's a bigger part of, which I really want. Yeah, I mean, you don't make another, like, an amendment to an amusement park

[32:49] and not try to do anything with that character in the future, right? They really doubled down on Donkey Kong in a big way this past year, whether it be Universal Attractions or Donkey Kong Bonanza.

[33:02] I feel like Donkey Kong's back, baby. Yeah, they were doing a thing where they were, like, re-releasing a bunch of old DK games on Nintendo Switch Online, and we're like, what is this building towards? and then Donkey Kong Bonanza was at the Switch 2 reveal.

[33:16] And I was just like, this is, he's finally getting the game that he's always deserved. And yeah, amazing video game. But yeah, I hope we get to see him in this movie. I really like how the first movie did references to Smash Brothers

[33:28] by just having Mario and DK fight each other. They did references to Mario Kart by just being like, there's a Go-Kart level or whatever, right? So I think that's what they can do with this one too. Like just kind of weave in references, nods to full-on games without having to do a complete adaptation of Mario Kart Double

[33:46] Dash or something like that. Yeah. Yeah. Well, you have a few minutes left here. Let's kind of turn ahead, because the Super Mario Galaxy movie is coming out next April, and a year after that, in May of 2027, we're going to get the first Legend of Zelda live-action

[34:02] movie, which, within the last week, started production. Shooting is set to take place on the Zelda movie in New Zealand until April of next year, and we also got a summary for the movie, which says, The legend of Zelda follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness.

[34:18] The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce, an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.

[34:34] that sure sounds like The Legend of Zelda. And that is in theaters May 7th, 2027. This is going to be a very different spin for Nintendo. Live action movie. Westfall's directing. He directed the most recent Planet of the Apes movie, which I really liked. That's a really, really good movie.

[34:48] And The Maze Runners, I think, is the other movie that Westfall has done. So, Brian, where are you at right now on a live action Zelda movie? I'm really excited for it. I think this is... I think that the director is a great fit. He worked with...

[35:02] He did the Planet of the Apes movie where all of them just had incredible scope in terms of set design. The CG team he worked with on that one was amazing, so I'm hoping he gets to work with a similar team for Zelda.

[35:16] This feels surreal. When we got the Mario movie, we had already had a Mario movie, right? And it wasn't good. It was live action. It was like a dystopian Blade Runner fever dream

[35:30] directed by people that had never played the game, clearly. Really bonkers cast. It was one of those... I remember, like, one of the first times being a kid being just, like, severely disappointed in a video game adaptation.

[35:43] And then I got, you know, years and years of those continued. But Zelda's never been done, right? Like, it's funny, because, like, growing up reading IGN, like, one of the things we were famous for was, like, the Legend of Zelda live-action movie trailer

[35:56] that we put up as an April Fool's gag. and for the longest time that was the closest thing we ever had to anything like that. So I wonder if we're going to get a tease for that movie before this movie. It feels a little early.

[36:09] That would be great. Yeah. Even just like a 30 second spot like one shot of Link in a dungeon or something and then the title or you see the master score just kind of like in the Lost Woods or something like that.

[36:21] It's really exciting. I like that they're going with a younger cast because it means to me that they can do stuff with those characters for a very long time. I'm fascinated to see... They haven't announced casting for Ganon yet, right?

[36:33] Nope, just Lincoln's over. Okay. So, yeah, that's... I don't know. It's going to be really cool. They said there's dungeons and puzzles in the description. I also thought people were, like, really excited that they're actually shooting on location, which is such a low bar

[36:45] these days, but I think that's great, too. You know? I didn't even think about that. That's so true. Look, they just made an entire Avengers movie, which is, like, you know, Doomsday, which, in theory, is basically just like green screen the movie.

[36:59] And so for this, actually going to New Zealand, shooting on location, I don't know why I said on, like, it's not like they're going to. They're in the title right now. Yeah. They're set up in Castle Town, ready to go.

[37:12] It's very early in the morning. But yeah, no, I'm really excited for this movie. Probably more so than Mario. Yeah. How about you, Nick? Where are you at on the Zelda movie? I'm excited for it. For the longest time, when it was announced, I was like, what?

[37:24] Really? Kind of scratching my head. But now, the more I think about it, I mean, one of the most popular fantasy series ever is the Lord of the Rings movie that were also shot in New Zealand. And the thing that kind of stands out to me is the possibility of scope.

[37:39] As you pointed out earlier, the Planet of the Apes, the most recent Planet of the Apes, has this sense of scale that I think would work really well in Zelda's favor. And I think New Zealand's the perfect spot for it. You got your castle-like town, adjacent landscapes, as well as swampy areas.

[37:55] So, I don't know. I think there's a lot of opportunity for some really cool Zelda imagery. And at the end of the day, a Zelda movie with dungeoneering and puzzles feels very Indiana Jones to me,

[38:08] which I think is pretty exciting. And I do think we'll see a little bit of a different side of Link, a Link who is, like, intelligent. I know it's kind of weird to kind of pass that on them because we're always playing as Lee,

[38:20] but I think he is a smart dude if he can figure out all these puzzles. So, like, I think being able to do that in action and parse all this information will be an interesting take on the character in a way we've never actually seen before.

[38:33] Yeah, I think so, too. And I think that I was so skeptical of this when it was announced, but they have said every right thing since they announced that it was live action. I'm looking forward to this, and I'm really excited to see the first look for that one. But we are going to get out of here.
