Ghost Rider Movie Breakdown — Full Breakdown & Transcript

[00:02] with Ryan Gosling as the Spirit of Vengeance in a film helmed by Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy. So, we are going to break down everything we know about this new movie, a certain writer that we hope makes an appearance

[00:14] this film connects to the whole Blade debacle and the overall MCU. Hey, welcome back to Screen Crush. I'm Colton Agog. And with all the Avengers Doomsday we've been doing here at the channel, plus a ton of X-Men news, we haven't

[00:29] really had a chance to dig into this Ghost Rider announcement from Comic-Con. There we saw Kevin Feige and Ryan Gosling confirm that the longanticipated Ghost Rider movie is now a reality. You see, for years this has been a bit of a

[00:42] running gag between Gosling Feige and Josh Haritz from the Happy Sad Confused finally formally announce that you're ghost writer? You know, I've tried to everything in my power. You told me Ghost Rider was the character you wanted

[00:55] to play. I spoke to Kevin Feige. You know this. You saw this. >> Feige even had Josh help him make the announcement with a little gag at the >> I asked you about it. I asked you about the rumors and it was so weird. The

[01:08] >> The lights go out does not mean it's a sign. >> So for years it was discussed about four to be exact. this whole idea of Gosling

[01:20] here and there, but nothing official. In fact, the most encouraging comment we had was Gosling saying, "Discussions have been had from yet another question spirit of vengeance. >> Have you broken bread with Kevin Feige

[01:34] that discussion. Some discussions have been had." Now, in an interview after the Hall H panel, Feige detailed that it was actually Ryan Gosling and Shawn Levy who brought this particular Ghost Rider pitch to Marvel and they were sold

[01:49] instantly. It also helped that Feige saw a cut of the new Star Wars movie Star Wars Starf Fighter directed by Shawn Levy and starring Gosling. And Feige had >> It's awesome. I didn't need to see that movie to know those two were awesome,

[02:02] but I did watch it as a Star Wars fan and it's awesome. Now, like I said earlier, Shawn Levy, he did Deadpool and Wolverine, a movie that yes, it it was a nostalgia movie, but I still really liked it and I thought Levy did a great

[02:14] wanting to work with him again. And then on top of that, you have Gosling, of course, who is just a brilliant actor and whose career these past few years has been skyrocketing with films like Barbie and Project Hail Mary. And word

[02:27] is like Feige said that Starf Fighter it is phenomenal. So, this is just all around great news. great director, great actor, and a great character. But, you know, Ghost Rider, he's not like a huge Marvel hero, right? He's not Spider-Man,

[02:40] no-name hero either. I'm sure a lot of you guys know a good bit about Ghost Cage films, right? But I still thought I'd give you a little rundown on the kind of who this character is, both the Johnny Blaze version as well as the

[02:54] Danny Catch version, because we still aren't sure which Ghost Rider Gosling is think if they're rebooting Ghost Rider into the MCU that they would in all likelihood go with the original main Ghost Rider, which is Johnny Blaze.

[03:08] Parker, he is the main Spider-Man. Bruce Wayne, he is the main Batman. But then McInness. And that's kind of the bucket that a Danny Catch Ghost Rider would fall in. He's awesome. Some even prefer him, but he's not the main one. So,

[03:22] He's a motorcycle stunt man who does wild tricks like jumping buses and for a crowd. He makes a deal with a demon/the devil, later revealed to be Mesto. And that deal is to save his dad from dying of cancer. Johnny then

[03:36] becomes the Ghost Rider, the spirit of vengeance, which without getting too too deep into it, he is basically connected to this entity known as Zathos that is the spirit of vengeance, but that grants the Ghost Rider its power. And very long

[03:49] story short, Meisto grants Johnny this power in exchange for him curing his dad's cancer. And in return, he expects Johnny to like serve as a bounty hunter on Earth to hunt down souls that are to be damned to hell and Ghost Riders to

[04:02] like deliver them there. Part of Ghost Rider's power is known as the penance stare. Ghost Rider will like look into someone's eyes and force them to that they have inflicted on someone else.

[04:15] else. >> Feel their pain. [screaming] to Galactis. experience the pain of eternal guilt. Now, in typical deal with

[04:27] the devil fashion, it is too good to be true. Meto, he did cure Johnny's dad's cancer, but he left out the fact that his dad was destined to die just a short time later doing a motorcycle trick. This pissed Johnny off royally, and

[04:39] since Meisto can't actually control the spirit of vengeance, Johnny is able to refuse orders from Meisto and still maintain his power. And then he just takes punishment of crooked souls into his own hands. So that's the Blaze

[04:52] version who we've seen in Agents of Shield. >> And then there's the Danny Catch version, the version whose comic logo was actually used at the Hall Age panel to announce this movie. So take that for

[05:06] like about my job is that we get to escape into the world of fiction, right? We get to talk about Marvel, DC, Star Wars. But sometimes we get to make a And I know a lot of you have struggled to quit smoking. And while smoking is

[06:49] sister. One night the two of them stumble into a bad situation in a has her blood on his hand and he like motorcycle with the blood on his hand and this like activates the spirit of

[07:03] vengeance and he becomes Ghost Rider. I am really really rushing through that origin story, but that's the gist of it. Oh, and we later find out that Danny because of course they are. And speaking of family, if they do go with the Catch

[07:16] version of the character, we could see the return of Catch's cousin whom we have already met in the MCU, Jennifer Kale. Jennifer was one of the only survivors of the witch's road from Agatha all along and we last saw her

[07:30] using her restored powers to fly off into the sunset. Now, we know very Pretty much all we know for sure is that is playing a Ghost Rider. But let's talk about what we think we'll see in the

[07:43] movie as well as what we want to see and which version of Ghost Rider we want Gosling to play. There is of course the argument to just do a straightforward don't think you do. The whole first act of the movie is Johnny making the deal

[07:56] and learning about his powers. I I think we're in an era of superhero movies origin story, at least the in-depth ones. You can tell the story of Blaze's Ghost Rider and like an opening credit sequence or an expositional conversation

[08:11] with another character. I don't think we waste time doing the whole origin story. Ghost Rider movie is of course the devil, Meisto, >> not the beast. We've met him already in the MCU played by Sasha Barry Cohen and

[08:23] opportunity to not have him pop up in this film. There's also Blackheart. You options there. Well, not lots. There's several options there, but there's also the really cool angle of just having the Ghost Rider tracking down some real

[08:37] scummy pieces of that need doses of vengeance. I'm vengeance. Now, the he spends a lot of time in the American Southwest, and I absolutely love seeing Ghost Rider in broad daylight, big blue sky, desert highway. It looks so cool.

[08:50] film, and I just loved it. Anyway, I think that would be a good place to have this Ghost Rider operating like out there in a different part of the country. Give it a little bit of a not a elseorld, but like a Elsewhere type of

[09:03] story feel in the MCU. It doesn't have to be smack dab in the middle of New York City, you know? But what if they aren't doing Johnny Blaze? What if they are going to do Danny Catch, who of course does hail from Brooklyn, NYC?

[09:15] After all, like I mentioned earlier, the logo they used at Comic-Con was the wouldn't be the first time that the MCU has done this. Scott Lang's Ant-Man is not the original Ant-Man. Hank Py is the original Ant-Man. And instead of

[09:28] introducing Hank Py as the main Ant-Man of the MCU, they skipped that bit. Had Hank Py be a retired Ant-Man and Scott Lang be like the main Ant-Man. So they could totally do that with Danny Catch and Johnny Blae. So if they don't go

[09:42] that traditional Johnny Blaze dirt bike stunt performer turned to demon hunter version with Gossling, and let me be clear, Gosling would be a phenomenal route and we learn that he's actually playing Danny Catch, then there's really

[09:55] only one reason I think you do that and that's so you can bring in Nick Cage. fire, but I'm good. >> Hear me out. Those Nick Cage Ghost Rider movies, they were not great, but they are fun and honestly didn't really make

[10:08] that much of a cultural impact. Very few people, even those who saw those movies, about. So, I don't think you have to worry about having to connect to them too much or them being bad being like a drag on this movie. And fun fact for

[10:20] you, Eva Menddees, who was in that first Ghost Rider movie with Nick Cage, she is that in mind for a little later. Now, in that first Ghostr Rider movie, we saw Cage's Johnny Blaze get mentored by an older, more experienced writer portrayed

[10:33] by Sam Elliot. Now, this character in the movie is credited as the caretaker, but he's later revealed to be Carter Slade, aka Ghost Rider, aka the Phantom explain the history of that and then I'll get into how this connects to a

[10:47] potential Nick Cage return. So before the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider with the motorcycle and flaming skull who didn't actually debut in the comics until like early 1970s, there was another very different character called the Phantom

[11:00] Rider. He was co-created by Dick Ays back in 1949 while working for not Marvel but magazine Enterprises. This incarnation of Ghost Rider was a federal marshall Rex Fury and he was assisted by his sidekick Singong. This version of

[11:15] Ghostriter appeared in more than 200 books before the Comics Code Authority Comics Code Authority was this self-regulatory body created by the Comics Magazine Association of America to censor comic book content. Their aim

[11:29] was to prevent government regulation of comics by essentially self-p policing all during this nationwide moral panic over juvenile delinquency. So what they rules by stamping comics with the seal

[11:42] of approval. Anyway, when heirs began working for Marvel Comics in the 1960s, he revived the character of Ghost Rider with this new secret identity and new physical appearance, the flaming skull, the motorcycle, and he called him Johnny

[11:55] Blaze. But later, the character of Rex Fury, I think he then kind of was revealed to be Carter Slate. I I can't remember. Essentially, the same westernstyle horseback riding character from those old books. He was revealed to

[12:08] have existed in the Marvel Comics universe as the Phantom Rider. Now, that is a very, very, very TLDDR version. But I tell you all that because I really loved that they adapted that for the Ghost Rider movie with Nick Cage, having

[12:21] Sam Elliot play that mentor type figure in that first Ghost Rider movie. I really enjoyed that. And I loved how they adapted that Phantom Rider persona. I love the flaming horse. It's very cool. But I do think for this one with

[12:33] Gosling, if they want to bring in an older Ghost Rider as like a supporting first one where he like has this mentor character, why not bring in Nick Cage as Johnny Blaze? And then of course you have Gosling playing Danny Catch. I know

[12:46] is that after Secret Wars, we move on from the, oh, let's bring back old nostalgic early 2000s characters portrayed by the original actors. I I know that. But I'm really not calling for some like multiversal tiny wimy

[12:59] nostalgia bait thing. I don't want to lean super heavily on those original cannon. Hell, that second Nick Cage Ghost Rider movie pretty much ignores the excuse of having Nick Cage, a beloved and phenomenal actor, back in

[13:14] the role as Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider, but also now getting to be in that mentor role that Sam Elliott played and having him alongside Ryan Gosling, who a Danny Catch Ghost Rider who is in training or anything like that. kind of

[13:28] which looks great, but that's not what I'm wanting for Ghost Rider. I want the Danny Catch Ryan Gosling Ghost Rider to be like a ghost rider who's been ghost riding for maybe a year and then have him learning maybe a thing or two along

[13:40] the way from this Ghost Rider who's retired and who did it for a long time begrudgingly working together, but also they have like this older brother, younger brother relationship. I think that would be dope. And you can even

[13:53] have Ryan Gosling's wife, Eva Menddees, reprise her role as Roxanne in the film. it's past. It's done. It's over with. >> I think Gosling and Cage would play great off of each other. It's a fun nod to the past without it feeling like some

[14:07] past. I just personally think it would be a cool story to tell, at least for the first one, and have Cage there as the older man. Now, before we go, I do want to talk about how this is all very reminiscent of another announcement that

[14:20] Marvel did nearly 10 years ago now. I think it's like 7 years ago. Blade. They brought out on stage a very popular and talented actor in Mahersula Ali announced him as Marvel's Blade and it went nowhere. Never happened. Ain't

[14:32] >> There's only been one Blade. There's only ever going to be one Blade. >> Now, Ghost Rider and Blade of course are in the same corner of the Marvel universe and they would be two obvious members of an MCU Midnight Suns. Now, my

[14:45] personal hope is that while Mahersula Ali will very likely never play Blade, that that's passed. I still want to see the character of Blade brought in. I Rider movie or two or three. Give us this side quest elsewhere, not overly

[15:00] connected to the MCU story with Ghost Rider. Recreate that magic of the MCU's connected to some other films like an eventual Blade movie. Maybe even bring in Punisher, Moonnight, and then you give us a badass Midnight Suns movie

[15:15] can have him fight Meto. Bring in a character like Nightmare. You can have bring in Loki. You could do Doctor Strange. There's a whole lot you could direction that they could take this story in the mutant saga, but kind of

[15:30] have it serve as like the the R-rated like corner of the MCU, like this side thing, kind of like Marvel Knights uh in the comics. It could be the Marvel Knights version of the MCU. Something that is connected yet simultaneously

[15:42] movies. In the comics, the Marvel Nights line, it was a line that was targeted at characters and mature themes. And while I think there's totally room to have Ghost Rider pop up in the mainstream Marvel movies like a Fantastic 4,

[15:56] he would be a great leading man, I think, for a different corner of the MCU have its own big crossover movie in a Midnight Suns. Anyway, those are just my Ghost Rider. We just have been struggling to find the time to do it.
