Top YouTube Analytics to Focus On
45sDirectly addresses a common pain point for creators, promising actionable advice.
▶ Play ClipIn this video, Nick explains which YouTube analytics are most important for channel growth, focusing on metrics that indicate viewer response and content value. He covers thumbnail click-through rate, audience retention, subscriber growth, playlist adds, shares, and overall engagement.
The first metric to focus on is thumbnail click-through rate (CTR). It measures how effective your thumbnails are at getting people to click on your videos. YouTube's average CTR is between 3% and 10%, so aim for the higher end or above.
Audience retention shows how people respond to your content. Look at total percentage viewed and total watch time. Longer videos that accumulate more watch time are better for channel growth.
Monitor overall subscriber growth and identify which videos generate the most subscribers. A high view count but low subscriber gain indicates viewers aren't finding enough value to subscribe.
Playlist adds indicate personal value. If viewers add your videos to playlists, it shows they find enough value to want to watch them repeatedly. This can guide you to make more similar content.
Shares are often overlooked but important. They indicate that viewers find your content valuable enough to share with their networks, leading to more exposure and session times on YouTube.
Comments, likes, and other engagement metrics show that your content is interesting enough to prompt interaction. YouTube is a responsive system; more engagement leads to more promotion.
Focus on metrics that measure viewer response: thumbnail CTR, audience retention, subscriber growth, playlist adds, shares, and overall engagement. These indicate how well your content resonates and drives YouTube to promote your channel.

5:13[00:00] - I'm gonna tell you what
[00:02] if you're wanting to grow
[00:04] And we're starting right now.
[00:05] (upbeat hip hop music)
[00:08] What is going on, my name is Nick.
[00:10] Welcome to another video.
[00:11] If this is your first time here,
[00:13] and you wanna learn how
[00:14] make videos, and all types of
[00:17] start now by subscribing
[00:19] so you don't miss anything.
[00:20] So I get this question all the time.
[00:21] Nick, I wanna grow my YouTube channel,
[00:22] but I don't know which
[00:25] to make sure that I'm
[00:26] So I'm gonna cover that
[00:28] exactly what it is that
[00:30] that you're focusing on,
[00:32] The very first thing that
[00:35] that you're focusing on,
[00:36] is your thumbnail click-through rate.
[00:39] And the reason that this is so important,
[00:41] is because your thumbnail
[00:44] of contact that you have
[00:46] and with new viewers.
[00:48] So your thumbnail and your
[00:51] So paying attention to
[00:52] and your thumbnails is
[00:54] how effective your thumbnails are.
[00:56] How effective are your
[00:58] into your video content?
[01:01] And I know you're wanting
[01:02] what's a good number to go for?
[01:03] YouTube says that between
[01:07] so you want to try to go
[01:09] for the higher version of that, or higher.
[01:12] So, if you're getting like a 1% or a 2%
[01:15] or like a 1.6 or whatever,
[01:17] then you want to look at your thumbnails,
[01:18] just be honest with yourself,
[01:20] say, yeah, I might have
[01:21] but people just for whatever reason,
[01:23] they're not responding to it
[01:25] so I need to make some experiments here
[01:28] and I need to figure out what
[01:30] in order to get people to
[01:32] A really cool tool to use for this
[01:34] to make sure that you're
[01:36] is called TubeBuddy, I'll put a link to it
[01:37] down in the description below
[01:38] but they have an A/B testing feature
[01:40] where you can actually test
[01:42] to see which ones the most effective.
[01:44] Make sure you check it out
[01:46] The next thing that you
[01:47] in your analytics is your
[01:50] Your audience retention reports
[01:51] are going to let you know
[01:53] to your content because you might think
[01:55] that you're putting out the
[01:57] your family, your friends,
[01:59] hey, this is great but then you go
[02:01] into your audience retention reports
[02:03] and you can actually
[02:06] are responding to your content.
[02:07] So your audience retention
[02:10] hey, how good is my content?
[02:11] Is my content decent?
[02:12] Is my content great?
[02:13] Does my content suck?
[02:15] Look at your audience
[02:17] and take the data.
[02:19] It doesn't matter what you think,
[02:20] it matters what that data tells you
[02:22] in terms of how people
[02:24] to the content that you're putting out.
[02:25] Now with the audience retention reports,
[02:27] you want to keep an eye on
[02:30] and you'll want to keep an eye
[02:31] on the actual total watch
[02:33] because let's say for example
[02:36] and you're getting a
[02:38] because they are two minute videos,
[02:40] well, if you're putting out a video
[02:42] that's 10 minutes long and
[02:44] then those videos are
[02:46] for your channel which
[02:49] The next one that you want to focus on
[02:50] inside of your analytics is
[02:54] Now I know that it's important
[02:55] to not get caught up in the numbers per se
[02:58] but if you're not
[03:00] but you're generating a lot of views,
[03:01] that tells you that yeah,
[03:03] they're watching your stuff
[03:04] but they're not finding enough
[03:08] and to want to keep coming back.
[03:10] Another thing that you wanna look at
[03:11] when you are looking at
[03:14] that you're generating is you want to look
[03:15] at the specific videos that are generating
[03:18] the most subscribers for you.
[03:20] And if you want to fine-tune this,
[03:21] I actually built a calculator
[03:23] because a lot of people are asking me,
[03:24] hey Nick, how do you figure out
[03:25] your view to subscriber
[03:28] I actually built a calculator.
[03:29] If you go to viewstosubs.com,
[03:32] then you can actually calculate this in
[03:33] if you don't wanna do the math.
[03:34] And I know that subscriber
[03:36] but I just wanted to
[03:39] why that particular metric is important
[03:41] because it lets you know the value
[03:42] that you're bringing to other people.
[03:44] Another metric that is important
[03:45] is how many playlist
[03:48] Now this isn't something
[03:50] or anything like that but the
[03:52] is because this lets you
[03:55] that you're bringing to people.
[03:56] So if you're putting out content
[03:58] and people are adding
[04:00] or they're adding it to
[04:02] that lets you know,
[04:04] enough value in this that
[04:08] but they're actually wanting
[04:09] to watch these particular
[04:11] and another thing that
[04:13] is that's gonna say when you
[04:15] is that's gonna say, hey,
[04:18] in these particular videos
[04:19] and they're adding these
[04:21] maybe, just maybe, I should
[04:26] Now when you're looking
[04:28] what you wanna think about is
[04:30] this video, is it generating
[04:33] because it's gotten a lot more views?
[04:35] If so, maybe I need to
[04:38] to get more views and subscribers,
[04:40] or if you have a video
[04:43] at a higher rate but it
[04:46] that some of the other videos have gotten,
[04:48] then in that case, you
[04:50] okay well, if this one's
[04:52] at a higher rate, might
[04:54] that I mentioned a minute ago,
[04:55] if this one's generating
[04:58] then how can I remake this
[05:00] that maybe I could go for
[05:03] or maybe I could try to do another way
[05:05] that I can present this so that I can try
[05:07] to get more views on this particular topic
[05:10] because it's generating more
[05:13] Another one that's
[05:15] when you're looking in your
[05:18] A lot of people overlook shares
[05:19] and they're like, oh well,
[05:20] but in reality, shares mean
[05:24] that the people that
[05:26] find enough value in it that
[05:29] with other people on the internet,
[05:31] be it their family, their
[05:34] whoever, that they're
[05:36] in what it is that you're doing
[05:37] that they are willing to
[05:39] with their people that they know.
[05:41] And of course, the more that
[05:44] that's the more session times
[05:45] that are gonna be started on YouTube,
[05:46] that's more people that
[05:48] to your content, that's
[05:50] more people in and all that stuff.
[05:51] So shares are definitely
[05:54] to keep an eye on when it
[05:56] And of course the overall engagement
[05:58] that you're getting on
[06:01] Now, some people are like,
[06:03] or likes don't matter and all that stuff
[06:04] and it's not something that
[06:07] oh well this video got a lot of comments
[06:09] so let's just show it to
[06:11] but what it does do is it tells you
[06:13] that what you're making
[06:15] or the people are opinionated
[06:17] to where they are gonna take that effort
[06:19] to go and they're gonna sit there
[06:20] and they're gonna type in their computer
[06:21] and they're going to make that effort
[06:23] to interact with what
[06:25] and if you look at it,
[06:27] that I've said so far in this video,
[06:28] you know, we've got the thumbnails
[06:30] which tells you how people respond
[06:32] to what it is that you're doing,
[06:33] we've got your watch time which tells you
[06:34] how people respond to what
[06:37] we've got your playlist
[06:39] respond to what it is you're doing,
[06:40] shares, how are they responding,
[06:42] the overall engagement on your channel,
[06:43] how are people responding to
[06:46] the reason that these
[06:48] is because YouTube is a responsive system
[06:51] and the more people are
[06:53] in all these different ways,
[06:55] the more YouTube is gonna
[06:58] because you're keeping people on the site,
[07:00] you're keeping people
[07:02] you're keeping people engaged
[07:04] with what it is that you're doing,
[07:05] they're responding to your content.
[07:08] I made a video about how to generate
[07:09] more watch time on your channel as well
[07:11] because that's one of the things
[07:11] that YouTube is judging us on,
[07:13] I'll put a link to that at the
[07:14] so you can check that out.
[07:16] It talks about adding the right
[07:18] and where to use cards
[07:20] and not use playlists
[07:21] Really cool, so make
[07:23] And if you wanna learn more
[07:25] making videos and all types of
[07:27] start now by hitting
[07:30] so you don't miss anything.
[07:31] Thank you so much for watching.
[07:32] I'll see you next time.
