Season 3 Premiere Overview

The episode begins with the largest battle seen on the show so far, the Battle of the Gullet.

[00:12]
Opening Tapestry Analysis

The opening sequence features an embroidery that tells the history of the Targaryens, likely Helena's work, showing visions of past and present horrors.

[00:38]
Tapestry: Old Valyria to Doom

The tapestry starts with Old Valyria, including a blood magic sacrifice, then shows Daenys the Dreamer and the Doom of Valyria.

[01:04]
Tapestry: Aegon's Conquest

Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives fly across the tapestry. Scenes depict the conquest of Westeros, including the burning of Harrenhal.

[01:34]
Tapestry: Wise Lords Bend the Knee

The tapestry shows the lords of Westeros bending the knee to Aegon, including the Arryns, Starks, and Tullys.

[02:06]

[02:22]
Tapestry: Great Council and Dance Begins

The Great Council of 101 AC is shown, where Viserys is named heir. The tapestry then shows the realm split between Aegon II and Rhaenyra, starting the Dance of the Dragons.

[02:52]
Key Events in the Dance

The tapestry depicts Aemond accidentally killing Lucerys, the murder of Prince Jaehaerys, the Battle at Rook's Rest, and the various dragons of the Blacks.

[03:32]
Tapestry: Rhaenyra's Crest and Focus

The tapestry ends with the Targaryen crest, specifically Rhaenyra's black dragon on red, suggesting this season focuses on her experience. The Iron Throne is absent, indicating the conflict has grown beyond its original scope.

[05:23]
Rhaena and Sheepstealer

Rhaena encounters the wild dragon Sheepstealer. In the book, a peasant girl named Nettles tames him, but the show gives this role to Rhaena to streamline the narrative.

Aemond drags Maester Orwyle from his bed, accusing him of scheming to rescue Aegon. Orwyle helped Aegon with Larys last season.

[09:02]
Aemond's Plans and Hightower Army

Aemond tells Alicent he will remain in King's Landing and that 15,000 Hightower soldiers are en route, ruining her plans with Rhaenyra.

[14:37]
Second Sons and Power Struggles

Many troubles are shaped by second sons, like Aemond and Daemon, who vie for power. Otto Hightower was also a second son.

[14:50]
Corlys Offers His Bastard Son

Corlys offers his bastard son, Addam of Hull, from Ibb. The Sea Snake is devastated to see his castle, High Tide, burning.

[15:16]
Lohar and Tyland Lannister

Lohar (played by Abigail Thorn) warns Tyland Lannister. The show version mixes in a character named Rachaelo Rindun.

[15:42]
Sheepstealer's Trust

Sheepstealer cooks a carcass for Rhaena, showing trust. The dragon's behavior mirrors hers.

[15:42]
Ormund Hightower's Army

Rhaenyra wants to fly into battle herself, but Jace repeatedly undermines her authority. He doesn't trust her judgment.

[19:04]

[20:44]
Jace's Fate and Omissions

[21:08]
Corlys Leads Through the Pass

Corlys leads the fleet through the dangerous Dragonstone Pass, winning Addam's respect.

[21:36]

[22:30]
Baela's Bravery and Addam's Rage

Baela baits Sheepstealer to save Velaryon ships. Addam kills Lohar in a rage, believing he killed Corlys.

[22:57]
Jace's Death

Jace tries to rescue Baela but is shot down. He is shocked that he is in danger, never considering battle could be fatal.

[23:36]
Theme of Reckless Youth

The episode's uniting theme is that young kids are too eager to prove themselves in battle, echoing Rhaenys' words from Episode 1 of the show.

The episode explores themes of ambition, the cost of war, and the recklessness of youth, setting up major consequences for the characters involved.

[00:00] House of the Dragon is back, baby, and we are starting off this season with a huge battle, the biggest battle we have seen on the show so far. Welcome back to ScreenCrush, I'm Ryan Ari and this is all of the Easter Egg references and little things you might have missed in season

[00:12] 3, episode 1 of House of the Dragon. So we begin the episode with the opening sequence, which is the same embroidery we saw in last season's opening. Now we broke this opening down in season 2, but it's probably going to change throughout the season, so we're just going to quickly go through

[00:25] it again and shout out to Brianna McLeary for her observations on the season 2 opening. This is likely Helena's embroidery work that we're seeing brought to life as she is embroidering throughout season 2, and remember she is haunted by visions of the past and present

[00:38] horrors of her family. We see blood soaking through the thread and fabric as more and more blood is spilled in the dance of the dragons. This tapestry is telling the history of the Targaryens, much like George R. Martin's book Fire and Blood, which this show is adapted from.

[00:50] We start with Old Valeria in its prime, with some kind of blood magic sacrifice being performed in front of the dragon. Then we cut to a Targaryen woman holding another person, and this is presumed to be Danie's the dreamer who foresaw the doom of Valeria. We then see the

[01:04] threads connect Danie's to the next big spread, the doom. Valeria collapsing under volcano fire while dragons fall from the sky. Aegon the Conqueror and his sister wives Rainey's in Vecenia fly across the tapestry on their dragons. Vecenius Dragon is, of course, Vegar, who is still a force to be

[01:20] reckoned with during the time of the show. We can also see that Valeria on ships joining them from below. Next are scenes from Aegon's conquest of Westeros with Lannister and Gardner's sigils lying on a blood-covered battlefield, with bodies being devoured by dragons. In the center,

[01:34] we also see Heron Hall consumed by blood and dragon fire. In Game of Thrones, Tywin Lannister told the story of Aegon's conquest of Heron Hall. Then we see the wiser lords of Westeros bending

[01:51] the need to Aegon, including the errands, the Starks, and the Tullies. On Shara errands, lap we see her son, Ronald Aaron. It was the unspoken threat to his life that made the Erie surrender to the Conqueror. Ronald had taken to the sky as a king, but he landed as a Lordling.

[02:06] Next is Megor the Cruel dead on his iron throne. Whether accident or murder, history just isn't sure. We then see Jeharris, the conciliator, and his wife, the Good Queen Allasang. They were probably the Targaryen lines most too well-loved and successful rulers. Below them are these seven-pointed star

[02:22] and a pot of gold to represent how Jeharris and his wife mended the rift between the Targaryens and the Church, and also got the crown out of debt. Next, we see the great council that we saw at the very beginning of House of the Dragons, Season 1, Episode 1. Jeharris tried to avoid a war being fought over

[02:36] succession by publicly naming his heir, who we see on the far left, Viseris. On the right, we can see Reini, the Queen who never was, and Coralus, her husband. The dance of the dragons begins in the tapestry as the realm is split in two between Aegon II and Ranera. Aegon sits on the iron throne,

[02:52] while Ranera has her seat on Dragonstone. Then we see the act that truly started the war, Aemon accidentally killing Luke in the Stormlands. The next scene is the funeral for the little prince Jeharris, who blood and cheese murdered in his bed and Season 2. The threads go through Jeharris's

[03:05] neck, symbolizing the fact that his murderers cut off his head and tried to escape King's Landing with it. There's another bloody battle scene with the battle at Rook's Nest, which left right niece and her dragon may lease dead and grievously wounded Aegon and his dragon's

[03:17] son, Fire. Aemon stands triumphant in the middle as the only true victor in that battle, who brought down both of the other dragons. We then see Vegar in the center of a circle with all of the black dragons flying toward her. First is Syrax, then Vermax, Caraxis, C-Smoke,

[03:32] Vermithor, Moon Dancer, and Silverwing. And I think this last dragon is sheepstealer. This all leads to the Targaryen crest, the black dragon on a red background, which is specifically Renearest crest during the dance. Aegon took on a personal crest of a golden dragon to represent

[03:46] Sunfire. And perhaps this means that this season is going to focus more heavily on Renearest experience of the war. We also don't see the iron thrown behind the logo, perhaps indicating that this conflict has grown far beyond its original scope. So Doug, what do you think

[03:59] of that? Doug? Is he? Oh no. Doug's phone has been disconnected. He's not safe. He must be. Hello. I tried to call you. I threw away my phone because I couldn't afford it. Poor Doug.

[04:11] Well, instead of throwing away your phone, you could have done what we did and switched to Mint Mobile so you can stop overpaying for wireless. They've got plans starting at just 15 bucks a month, and their coverage is outstanding. Mint Mobile is a premium service without the premium

[04:25] price tag, and that's why we love having them as a sponsor of this video. All plans include unlimited talk and text on the nation's largest 5G network. Mint provides 5G coverage to 98% of Americans. You can also shop the Mint store for the latest phones or use your existing phone.

[04:41] And best of all, guys, it is so easy to switch. With an eSIM, you can keep your number, sign up, and activate in just a few minutes. You don't even have to leave the house. You could switch to Mint Mobile before I'm even done telling you about Mint Mobile. All of their plans come with

[04:55] a seven-day money back guarantee, so again, it is very easy to try out, and then switch for good if you think it's the right fit. If you like your money, Mint Mobile is right for you. Shop plans at mintmobile.com slash screen crush. That's mintmobile.com slash screen crush. Up front payments of $45

[05:11] for three months, five gigabyte plans are required, which is the equivalent to $15 a month. The new customer offers for the first three months only, and then full price plan options are available. Taxes and fees are extra. See Mint Mobile for details. Now back to what I was saying.

[05:23] We opened with Reina almost immediately after we left her last season. She's come across the wild dragon sheep stealer who in the book Fire and Blood was originally written by a peasant girl named Nettles, but this change makes sense to keep the number of characters down and to give Reina more to

[05:37] do in the immediate future. In Fire and Blood, Nettles is a teenage girl who manages to tame the wild dragon by feeding it sheep every day until he came to accept her presence. Now we never hear a mention of sheep stealer disobeying her the way he does with Reina in this episode. They've done a lot to differentiate

[05:52] the dragon designs in this series, but these ragged bone spikes coming off of its wings just might be my favorite detail. Its jagged teeth and discolored scales really make it visually apparent that this is a wild, feral dragon, a different kind of beast than the ones in the dragon pit. Then in King's Landing,

[06:08] Aemon drags Maester or Wild from his bed, accusing him of scheming to rescue Aegon from King's Landing. Now this is a reasonable suspicion since we last saw or wild helping Aegon with Larus last season.

[06:22] Larus and Aegon are still riding in their raven cart. Larus seems unconcerned with Aegon's well-being. But it's worth noting that he is the only person who actually saved Aegon from what Aemon

[06:36] was planning to do. Perhaps he believes the suffering will make Aegon stronger like it did him. These are soldiers from how Stanton of the Crown lands, whose seat used to be Rook's nest. Unfortunately, we saw that seat get captured last season. They have a lot of reasons for hating Aegon as much as they

[06:54] do. Aegon can't bring himself to declare for Ranera so Larus does the only thing he can to save both of their lives. This man won't swear filthy to Ranera. It's because he is Aegon Targaryen. Back to Dragonstone, Ranera wholeheartedly believes Allison's offer to peacefully take King's Landing.

[07:10] Now of course, no one else on her council does, it sounds way too good to be true. But only Ranera knows Allison's well enough to understand that she was genuine in her attempt

[07:22] to end the war in Crown Ranera the victor. Jace undermines Ranera's judgment and not for the last time this episode. It is a trap. None of these people actually treat Ranera like a queen even though they're on her side. At the red keep, Allison is summoned to the King's side. She heads toward Aegon's

[07:37] bed chamber, but then you can see the horror in her eyes when the King's guard says, she knows something sinister is afoot and probably assumes immediately that Aegon died of his

[07:49] injuries. Perhaps helped along the way by Aemon. Aemon is instead sitting in the iron throne, sword in hand. Now this shot echoes a similar one of Daemon in Season 1 in his first introduction, continuing the parallels between these two characters, and to further the parallels between Aemon and

[08:04] Daemon. Aemon has Aegon's sword, while Daemon holds Dark's sister, which is the sword of Assynya, and House Targaryen's other ancestral blade. Now when Aemon tells Allison his brother abdicated, you can tell she does not fully believe him. Now Aegon was a bad return.

[08:19] Part of the reason that Allison went to Ranera is because she saw that her son Daemon is truly a monster, and knows that he would not be a fit ruler for the iron throne. And also remember that Ranera helped Allison to realize that in his death rattle, the Seris did not mean to crown his Aegon King.

[08:34] It's a story he once told about Aegon the Conqueror. He was talking about the prophecy of Aegon the Conqueror which he entrusted to Ranera. So Allison is trying to completely make up for all the mistakes she's made since the end of Season 1.

[08:49] Now Aemon seems to believe her fully when Allison tells him that she has been in the King's wood. And technically, that's not why she wasn't the King's wood for a long time. Remember, he basically told her to get lost in Season 2 after he became region, and she's using that against him.

[09:02] Join me, you'll be much pleased to return to my domestic pursuits. I have found myself a little used here ablate. He also really doesn't believe in her intelligence as a woman, and couldn't believe that she would be cunning enough to lie to him. Aemon tells Allison that he's changed his plans and will remain in King's Landing.

[09:16] Oh, and also, 15,000 high-tower soldiers are in route. Now this, of course, screws up all of the plans she just made with Ranera, but Allison shows her cunning in this episode. She decides to wait and figure out a new plan rather than keep trying to persuade him,

[09:29] which would have made him suspicious. Then we see that Cornelius' flagship has a new figurehead fitting the new name he gave it in Season 2. Queen who never was. The figurehead shows Rene East and her battle armor, holding her helm in her hands.

[09:41] In a world of political marriages, Cornelius and Rene East truly found love in their match, and this is an homage to that lost love. Next, we cut to Daemon and the River Men fighting some Lannister forces. Now, I believe this is probably the show's take on the battle at the Red Fork.

[09:53] The sigil of House Malister is visible on a shield here, and we see the Bracken sigil here, and what I believe is the Vance Crest right here. The Tully sigil is also everywhere, which makes sense as the Tully's are the overlord of the Riverlands.

[10:06] Daemon talks to Oscar Tully, the young Lord who put him in his place last season. He is the son of himself on the crown with his comportment here. Oscar is a mix of several characters in the Fire and Blood book, including his family members, Kermit and Elmo Tully.

[10:18] Right, is that real? Yeah, that's real. We see what you're doing, George. He also mentions the Golden Lord Lannister, referring to Jason Lannister. He is the twin of Thailand, the master of coin for Aegon, who went off across the narrow sea to recruit the triarchy for a naval battle.

[10:31] Jason tried to win Reneer's hand in Season 1, but she was unmoved by his charms. I do anything for my queen or lady wife. Thank you for the wine. They worry that more enemies are approaching,

[10:44] but instead, the winter wolves come out of the forest. So this is the army of old Northerners that Kriegenstark mentioned in Season 2. I have thousands of grabbeards. We've already seen too many winches. They will fight Todd, like Nondinus.

[10:58] They are holding the Stark sigil on their banners, and their commander is Roderick Dustin, also known as Roddy the Ruin. You can see the crossed axe crest of House Dustin on his armor. He throws down Jason Lannister's head to prove their allegiance.

[11:11] Now, the winter wolves are one of my favorite pieces of lore from Game of Thrones. Basically, when the winter hits in the north, it is so brutal and so devastating that they run out of food all the time. So the old men in the household leave the home.

[11:23] They go off into the snow and they brave the winter, so there's enough food for their families. So these old men are battle hard. They have survived the worst of the worst conditions in their lives, and now they come to fight for the queen.

[11:35] And by the way, if you want to be a winter wolf, you can get our new winter wolf shirt at our merch store. I love this shirt. And I want to show you this brand new shirt we're debuting today. This is the Dance of the Dragon's Tour shirt with dragons fighting on the front,

[11:47] and on the back, you can see all of the battles listed in this war. I love this shirt, and I cannot wait to get one. We also have our brand new Dunkin' Egg shirt. And of course, we have classics like Circus Wine Mixer, Team Green and Team Black shirts,

[11:59] Sir Pounce on the Iron Throne, and Hammer and Fury, named after one of my favorite characters from the book, Hugh Hammer. And if you become a store member, it's just at our $5 tier, you get an additional 15% off store-wide. Links are below.

[12:11] Then Gawain High Tower confronts Kristen Cole about the behavior of a soldier who assaulted a village girl, but Cole couldn't care less. Hang him then, beware. After Rook's rest, Cole has become hopeless. The dragons dance and men are like dust under their feet.

[12:25] He saw the might of the dragons. He now understands that a regular man like himself is nothing compared to their power. So now, rather than summon any courage as a battle commander to inspire his men, he just sits there and paints his house sigil on a shield.

[12:38] So Kristen Cole has repeatedly dishonored himself. And now, he still clings to his house and legacy, in spite of knowing that it's all a lie. Gawain High Tower, on the other hand, still genuinely believes in honor and knighthood.

[12:50] It's a good choice to keep these characters together since they test each other's principles. Brother, here's Gawain High Tower. He's Allison's brother. Ah, thank you. The three dragon seeds, Ulf White, Hugh Hammer and Adam of Hall, sit waiting for more instructions from Manira.

[13:02] Remember last season, Ranira had more dragons and riders. So she let Targaryen bastards try to claim dragons. A lot of them died, but these two made the cut. And if you like Hugh Hammer as much as we do, we also have the Hammer and Fury T-shirt

[13:14] for sale at our merch store. Ulf mentions a red priest from Essos who told him he had kings blood. This priest was a worshipper of the Lord of Light, just like Melisandra. The knight is dark and full of terrors. Now Melisandra also knew the importance of kings blood,

[13:27] trying to use Gendry to cast her magic. Ulf is under the impression that he's going to get a castle if Ranira nights him, but Adam corrects him. We already saw Ulf bucking under Ranira's orders last season. A knight will comport himself with grace at the Queen's table.

[13:41] But this might be a nothing. But this is showing his continued discontent. Then we go to Raina who gets tossed off by sheep's dealer and she begins singing the Valerian song that we have seen used to calm dragons in seasons 1 and 2. Is him tossed off by the Queen?

[14:00] Allison forges a letter from Aiman and talks to her favorite child, Helena, who remarks about Aiman. After he claimed Vega, he forgot what fear was. But he remembers now. He's also probably a bit afraid

[14:12] after what she said to him last season. You were swallowed up in the gods eye and you were never seen again. After claiming Vega are the oldest biggest and fiercest dragon in the world, Aiman then felt untouchable. But that changed the moment he saw Ranira's dragons last season.

[14:25] Now he feels powerless, which he particularly resents because he was bullied as a child. Aiman is now looking for some way to get his power back. Continuing the parallels between Aiman and Damon, in this series,

[14:37] it's important that many of the troubles we're seeing are shaped by second sons. People who were not set to inherit the power of their father or their house, so now are trying to vie for power in their own way. Otto Hightower, who orchestrated this entire war

[14:50] between the grains and the blacks, was also a second son of his house. Then Coralus offers his bastard son, Alan Simlicker, from Ibb, which is the largest island in the nation of Ibbin. The sea snake has been all around the world on his legendary journeys,

[15:03] always bringing back treasures to his seat at high tide. That castle is the representation of Coralus' life's work, which is why he is so shocked and devastated to see it burning. Lohar warns Thailand Lannister. You'll rule this cage if you wind up in the drink.

[15:16] Which is a cruel thing to say, considering what she will do to him later. Also, we mentioned it last season, but Lohar is played by fellow YouTuber Abigail Thorn or philosophy tube. Lohar is a character in the book, but the show version is also a mix of a Tairoshi character,

[15:30] named Rachelio Rindun, who has a bit more of an eccentric personality. And I'll admit it, I let out an aww when sheepstiller cooks a carcass for arena. It is a sweet gesture, indicating that she's also one the dragon's trust.

[15:42] Also, I love the way it chumps alongside her as if mirroring her behavior. Then we go to Ormond Hightower's forces, a massing two ride toward King's Landing. Ormond is the son of Otto Hightower's older brother, making him Otto's nephew and Allison's cousin.

[15:55] He is accompanied by Bull John Rockston, played by Joplin Sibtang, who you might recognize from Andorra. Behind Ormond and Hightower Green is Allison's youngest son, Dayron, who we heard mentioned last season. My son, Dayron. What's he like?

[16:07] He's kind. That's good. And that is his blue dragon to Sarion that is accompanying the army. Unlike in the book, Dayron has the operand hair of his mother instead of Targaryen's silver. This helps connect him more to his mother's peaceful nature

[16:20] than his war-mongering brothers. Ormond comes from a luxurious life, which we can see with his elegantly embellished armor and several rings. He doesn't like the stink of the encampment, sniffing a small perfume bottle attached at his waist. Allison has also flattered his ego

[16:33] in the false letter from Aiman, referring to Ormond as the beacon of the South. And Allison isn't done manipulating quite yet. She talks with Aiman, telling him everything he wants to hear. He's better than Aegon, and she has a plan to save him

[16:45] from a nearest dragons in the faith that he is afraid of. She also plays on his desire to be seen as strong and fearless, essentially claiming that staying in King's Landing is the coward's move. And then the creepiest moment of the whole series.

[17:01] But seen Allison's face when her son gives her a romantic kiss is horrifying. She is confronted once again at how monstrous her sons have become. Aiman's interest in Allison is new for the show,

[17:13] not in the book, but it's been foreshadowed in earlier seasons. His favorite companion is the brothel, Madame Sylvie, who is an older woman who he met when he was a young teen. He goes there seeking not only gratification, but a mother's love.

[17:25] The brothel he visits is also called, Mother's. Also, fun fact, Sylvie is played by Michelle Benard, who is Fabian Frankl's drama teacher. He oddly was my teacher at drama school. Off is taking a dunk in the woods when he gets confronted by a black goat.

[17:38] Now black goats are historically symbols of Satan and of dark magic. This is most likely one of the green men, the order that guards the weirwood trees on the Isle of Faces in the Riverlands. In myth and folklore, they're said to have green skin and antlers.

[17:50] Alice River shows up and keeps it simple. Who are you? Oh, which? Last season at Heron Hall, she showed Damon visions of the future and helped him to turn the river lords to his side. Alice is likely a green seer,

[18:02] someone who has the ability to see prophetic dreams and control animals similar to the wargs that we see in the original show. We saw her have a connection with birds last season. Green seers are like the children of the forest, who were on Westeros long before humans

[18:14] came to the continent. They are tied to the old gods at the north still worship, and this is why she knows the long night is coming. She told Damon about the coming threat and this is what finally solidified his loyalty to Ranera.

[18:26] But Alice's true origin and motives are still a mystery. Bala rushes to Ranera with news of the triarchy moving on the gullot. Now Ranera wants to fly out and meet them herself since she's fed up with letting others do the battling for her.

[18:38] And the symbols of authority are not jewels and gowns, but the shield and the sword. But Jace moves against her. From the beginning of this episode, he has repeatedly undermined her authority and doesn't trust her to make her own choices. He's not necessarily wrong that Ranera shouldn't fly into battle.

[18:52] I mean, that's how Aegon ended up extra crispy. But he's refusing to respect her authority as his queen. Last season, Jace went off without permission and it went quite well when he won the phrase to their side. Now he's eager to prove himself again.

[19:04] We come in this victory time. Then we finally go to the battle of the gullot which fire and blood fans have been waiting for for a long time. You can definitely see how this ended up being one of the most expensive and complex battle sequences ever puts a film.

[19:17] I cannot wait for the behind the scenes to find out more about how they pulled off this massive undertaking. Thailand Lannister learns a valuable lesson about how cell swords aren't to be trusted. Do you think I sailed across the narrow sea to when your king was warful?

[19:30] Allison made this excellent point last season, but Aement chose to ignore her. The trial key may play with accepting terms, but they are not to be trusted. Ranera attacks her down, shredding it with her knife. Symbolically this represents Ranera's rage

[19:42] at the trappings of womanhood. She has spent her entire life being condescended to and disrespected and treated like she is less than and she has had enough. They may appear to have the weak and feeble body of a woman, but I possess the heart and spirit of the king.

[19:54] Now through most of this scene, only Ranera is in focus. This shows how this betrayal by her son and her queen's guard is isolating her from the people around her. She feels like there is no one she can truly trust. Even when she turns her head

[20:07] and we rack focus on Missoria behind her, the focus is never truly on the background. It stays locked on to Ranera and isolates her in the frame. Veer Max and Moon dancer descend on the ships, much like Danny Will, many years later with the Iron Fleet.

[20:20] In the book, the dragon seeds are actually present to this battle and Bayla is absent. Perhaps that's what Alice was referring to when she said, We're missing a battle. Adding Bayla to this battle is a great choice, though, because it adds emotional stakes

[20:32] with Herbie Truth, Jace, and her sister Raina. I should also note that in the book, Bayla is engaged to Jace, but Jace fell in love with the woman from the north, but the show made a wise decision to make sure that we know that these two are actually in love.

[20:44] And the battle this raises the stakes even more, because we don't want to see this couple who's young and in love separated forever. Now, another key omission from the battle is Ranera's youngest son, Viseris. Now, I'm not going to go into detail about his role in these events

[20:56] because they may adapt it later on in the season, but we did note the difference. Now, to book readers, the first time Veer Max gets shot was shocking. It's only a moment after his arrival and it would be very surprising

[21:08] if Jace went down so quickly, but Bayla saves him, which left me briefly wondering if the show was going to change his fate. Unfortunately for him, they did not. Coralus leads Lohar into the Dragonstone Pass,

[21:21] a dangerous pass through shallow rocky waters. He takes the helm of his own ship, reminding us that above all else, Coralus is an incredibly accomplished sailor. When they make it through the pass, the House Vilarion theme rings out triumphantly as Alan stares at his father.

[21:36] Through his daring and skill, it seems like Coralus may have finally won Alan's respect. Reyna loses control of sheepstealer who begins burning Vilarion ships alongside the triarchy. House of the Dragon has actually shown us multiple instances where dragons disobey their riders.

[21:50] They aren't war machines, they're living beings with their own wills and personalities. For instance, Aiment ordered Veigar to not kill Luke, but Veigar is an old dragon who has long been battle-tested since Agon's conquest,

[22:02] and when she started to smell the heat of battle, she could not be deterred. In a similar way, sheepstealer is an isolated dragon. They've never been around people or ships, so to sheepstealer, everything they look at is an enemy. It also represents Bayla's own and securities and fears.

[22:17] Dragon riders imprint their own emotions on their dragons, because Reyna is so afraid and is so anxious, she's imprinting those emotions on to sheepstealer, so sheepstealer thinks that every ship and person that he looks at is an enemy that needs to be destroyed.

[22:30] Then Bayla cleverly baits sheepstealer to tailing her to save the Vilarion ships, a very brave manoeuvre, since one blast of dragon flame could be the end of her. In the midst of battle, Allen believes that Lothar has killed Coralus, and so leaps in to take vengeance for his father.

[22:44] Just moments after he's been getting to find a connection to his dad, he believes that Coralus has been killed in front of him. Then, in a burst of rage, he manages to kill Lothar, and this rage is our side that, in spite of everything, he does care about his father.

[22:57] Jace tries to come into rescue Bayla, but can't attack sheepstealer, because he doesn't want to hurt Reyna. Him swooping in close makes him a target for the ships as ballistas once again, and this time, Bayla doesn't make it in time to bail him out. So Jace manages to free himself from his dying dragon,

[23:11] but then he's immediately given the old boar mere treatment. I want to follow you, my brother. Now, one thing I think is fascinating is that when he turns around, he is genuinely shocked that he is in trouble. It shows that because he is such a child of privilege,

[23:23] whose every need has been cared for for his entire life, he never considered for a moment that going into battle could actually be fatal to him. He assumed that everything was going to work out okay because it always has for him. So the uniting theme in this episode

[23:36] is that the young kids are far too eager to prove themselves in battle and to win glory when they don't really understand how to win that glory, or the price of glory. It actually reminds me of what Reyni said in the tournament

[23:48] in episode one of the show. This is a kingdom that has known decades of peace, and now the young people are thirsty for war.

[24:00] They want to prove themselves, but now, they have once again learned the consequences of their recklessness. So the battle ends on this somber note. The blacks may have technically won this battle, but the losses were enormous, and they included the air to the iron throne.

[24:13] For near, it was desperate for Jayce to stay by her side, so she wouldn't lose a second son, but now she's lost him anyways. Big shout out to Harriet Lingolin, who wrote this episode.
