How to Change the Oil in a Tesla

[00:02] here and today I'm going to show you how to change the oil in a tired of all the maintenance it takes to keep this car on the road so I got a

[00:15] means we have a lot of Maintenance to catch up on and the first and most change so here are all the tools and products you're going to need and as always I like to use common hand tools

[00:28] at home yourself you don't have to go to the Tesla dealer and you can save yourself a ton of money we will be using a multimeter to test the oil I'll show you how to do that we have our safety glasses a funnel and something that's

[00:40] really cool is I'm going to show you a trick using a solo cup and some tin foil only does it work for Tesla but it works for gas cars as well so hopefully that tip helps you out we will be testing the oil out so we're doing an oil analysis

[00:53] I'll show you the results of that we have our Crush washers and then we have our oil filter and oil and it's very important that you buy an oem filter you can see right there is the part number and here's why it's so important so this

[01:05] it open so you can see the different parts we have our relief spring we have our filter element and on the bottom we have an anti-drain back valve made of silicone now to cut inside our Tesla filter I'm using this oil filter cutter

[01:18] just place the oil filter down into the cutter tighten up the blade and now you just spin the oil filter and it slowly starts cutting it away then after spinning it a bunch of times you could see we have our oil filter that is cut

[01:32] so let's check out to see what is inside if we open this oil filter up there we go you can see we have a circuit board there is a 30 amp fuse and there's a couple of wires plus our filter element the anti-drain back valve but there's no

[01:46] spring plus oil pressure is lower in an electric vehicle now our circuit board up here is very important you don't find that on the non OEM filters what it does is it reads the current in the oil figures out electron transfer and all

[01:58] know when the oil needs to be changed and puts a light up on the dash so don't cheap out make sure you use the OEM oil filter so that's why it's so important to get the OEM filter and it's also very important to get the correct motor oil

[02:12] in this case we're running 10 w30 full synthetic and you can see right there it even says Tesla on it so we know we had the correct oil people say this oil doesn't exist or it's really difficult to find and that's just not true let me

[02:24] looking for oil for your Tesla the easiest thing to do is find the green easily that's usually for electric vehicles and if you look for the green leaf right there and you can see it says electric vehicles that all tells you

[02:37] this is exactly what you need and then right here American super capacitor Institute so ASI certified for electric motors this is exactly what you need for your Tesla now just to compare it real quick here's some regular car oil you

[02:51] can see this is American petroleum Institute this is not made for your Tesla or any EVS if you put this in your Tesla you will damage it so this is exactly what we need now I get it there's a lot of different oil here and

[03:03] if you're not sure which oil to buy just go ask an employee let them know hey I'm looking for oil for my Tesla which one should I get and they'll be able to direct you right to this but should be pretty simple now you know so don't

[03:15] find Tesla motor oil in this case I'm getting the extended range motor oil because this is my first EV and I know especially with Teslas owners could get something called range anxiety where you get nervous that you run out of range

[03:29] this oil will hopefully prevent that from happening and that's everything you I'll be sure to include all these tools and products in the description so you can easily find it with that said let's get started okay so my friend says it's

[03:43] really difficult to find a shop that will change the oil in your Tesla and it's hard for me to imagine that that is true because oil is such a basic that have a little Spike Cammer in the middle that way we could go to a couple

[03:56] of shops and we'll see if they'll change the oil in my Tesla so let's start up the oil in my Tesla so let's start up and let's get

[04:10] going so I see what they say about Tesla's being really torky I get it this is the first time I've ever driven a Tesla and I mean I really like this thing it sounds really good there's plenty of

[04:24] power the manual transmission is really Snappy I love the sequential I think a lot of torque a lot of torque that's like an eighth of throttle I get why people love these

[04:39] cars so the first shop has really good Google reviews and I've never been here so they won't recognize me so let's see if they could change the

[04:51] service for my car I want to get an oil change what what's the year making model change what what's the year making model of the vehicle it is a 2013 Tesla Model s Teslas typically don't need an oil change we do a lot of other services to

[05:05] change we do a lot of other services to the vehicle um who told you you needed my buddy he said before I go drive it around a lot I should go and get it it's uh fresh and new yeah uh I might refer you over to

[05:20] the Tesla dealership to get that taken a look at um yeah but you might want to appreciate the information thank you very much a great day have a good one very much a great day have a good one [Music]

[05:37] when we ran into a bit of an issue so this is a first the Tesla overheated and but luckily I was able to get off the road into this gas station here and shut damage anything so let's go check out

[05:50] hood so it looks like we might have been low on coolant just another maintenance item that needs to be addressed but once this is filled up we should be good to go so our coolant temps are holding steady and we're off to the next shop

[06:03] cars so maybe they could change the oil in my in my [Music]

[06:22] looking to uh get a service an oil change for my car okay what kind of vehicle is it for I have a 2013 Tesla change you can do on that kind of vehicle um that being said we can do a

[06:35] there's nothing we can do for an oil chain okay I appreciate your time thank yourself a good one now on our way to the final location we had another problem because the fuel gauge is apparently not

[06:49] accurate I don't know what's going on something's wrong if I give a guess she's just going to stall well just like that

[07:02] of gas we're going to have to wait a few minutes and uh hopefully get a fill hey you guys all right you need any help yeah uh we're good we just ran out of gas but I appreciate it yeah ran out of gas tell water no like okay so like I

[07:18] the gas station just walk over real quick get a gas can fill her up and uh get back on the road the amount of people staring at us right now taking pictures is so bizarre it's like they I've never seen a car run out of gas on

[07:31] the side of the road I don't get it all right we have fuel in her let's go uh right we have fuel in her let's go uh start her up the nicest shops in the area that Services high-end cars so let's see what

[07:53] going good how are you today good good can't complain I need to get an oil change yes sir absolutely what is the year making model of your vehicle year making model of your vehicle 2013 Tesla Model S a Tesla okay um so

[08:07] Teslas uh we don't do oil changes on Teslas but um we work on a lot of uh other vehicles German specifically uh Mercedes BMW Audi Porsche Volkswagen I do have a delou that needs a turbo um well okay yeah um no I need to get an

[08:22] oil change but uh but thank you I I appreciate the help absolutely have a day okay so my friend was right it's impossible get an oil change for Tesla so let's head back and I'll show you guys how to change the

[08:38] whatever you have then you want to chalk off the rear wheels and then pop the hood and to do that we need to go to the center screen here and just tap the hood then the hood will pop open then just slide your hand

[08:51] now anytime I change the oil in a car I lets the engine breathe better that way the oil drains quickly and whenever I change any fluids in a car I like to use an oil spill mat like this which absorbs

[09:03] any spills that we might have so let's slide that under the car then let's get the oil catch pan under there as well now if we head underneath the car you oil pan right here we have our drain plug right there and then if we look

[09:16] over here we have our oil filter so let's go drain the old oil out now always inspect to make sure you're not going to get oil on anything we do not it could catch fire and getting oil off of this would be almost impossible so my

[09:30] inexpensive it easily bends and shapes you're done you just throw it right out good so let's get the oil drain pan in place and now we can get a 15 mm socket on the drain bolt and break it

[09:43] free then loosen it the rest of the way by hand and then when you get close to the end here get ready to pull it away quickly to avoid getting oil all over you perfect now as the oil drains don't forget to get your oil sample and let me

[09:55] show you how to test this electric vehicle oil at home so here's our oil multimeter to test the oil we're going to set it to the continuity test down here and how this works is anytime these two probes touch it'll beep like that

[10:10] there's electrons flowing through these now good EV oil that's not worn out has electrons flowing in here and that's how you get extended range so if we put our we don't touch we put our positive in here it should be beeping if the oil is

[10:25] good and it's not so that's how you can tell if the oil is bad if this was beeping it would still be good now we're going to add some brand new 10w30 EV oil now when we put the positive in there it should be all right so that is good

[10:41] oil so that's one way to test your oil at home I'm going to go cap this up that way we could send it out for an analysis and we'll let the professionals tell us if it's good or bad and some other good information about the oil all right so

[10:54] completely drained and for this drain bolt there's no need for a Crush Washer by hand and then we're going to use a torque wrench to torque it to spec good so with the oil pan empty and the drain plug torque to spec now we can come over

[11:08] here and change our oil filter now this is not the OEM filter which isn't good but what is good is the 25mm nut at the bottom here that makes loosening this oil filter really easy now with the filter loose use a solo cup to grab the

[11:21] the mess to a minimum that way the oil doesn't drip all the way down your arm all the oil we contained so it didn't get everywhere that's pretty good let's drain that oil filter as well and as that drains let's install the new filter

[11:35] vertically I like to pre-fill it with new oil that way the engine doesn't run to fill up the filter and also don't forget to lubricate the gasket with some fresh oil that way the filter will come off nice and easy next Oil Change under

[11:49] sure there's no gasket material left over from the old oil filter and this is clean and now we can get the new filter in place by carefully threading it by this never tighten oil filters with tools just tighten it as much as you can

[12:02] by hand like so good and now we're done under the car and the nice thing about from under the car just like that so now let's go fill this motor with oil so get your funnel into the oil fill hole and this engine takes five quarts of full

[12:16] synthetic 10w30 EV extended range so make sure you add all five quarts good now we can remove the funnel and get that oil cap back on and now we for about a minute that way the oil could circulate we also want to back the

[12:30] car off the ramp so it's flat and level and we can get a good reading now with the engine off as we let the oil drain back into the oil pan motor oil driving an EV is all about being environmentally friendly so you

[12:43] container like this and this could be disposed at your local mechanic shop for real this is an important step Don't pollute okay so the car has been sitting for a little bit the dipstick is located right here let's check the oil and for

[12:57] your dip stick to get an accurate reading so reinsert the dipstick make sure it's pushed all the way down and pull it back out and let's take a look the oil's filled right to the end of the cross-hatched area and that means we're

[13:10] completely full all right so that's a job well done so now you know how to change the oil in a Tesla all right a week later she's running great but look what we got the results of our oil analysis let's check

[13:23] right here and they pointed out in yellow our problem area so here's what first oil analysis they've ever done on a Tesla no antifreeze no fuel low ins solubles so the oil filter is doing a good job but he does say right here that

[13:38] the oil conductivity is very low which we tested for it's at 11% which isn't good should be around 75% before you change the oil so all the wear metals are good and then right here you could see conductivity is low so it looks like

[13:50] now I just need to catch up on all the neglected maintenance and now when oil in a Tesla you could send them this video if you guys want to see the other maintenance I'll link them down in the description and there you go now you
