AI Summary

In this video, ASAP Science's Mitchell Moffit meets his internet-found doppelganger, Scott Hoying of Pentatonix, and uses a CircleDNA test to explore whether they are related. The video explains the biology behind facial recognition neurons, pareidolia, and why we perceive doppelgangers, blending personal experience with scientific insights.

[00:00]
Introduction to Doppelgangers

Mitchell introduces the concept of a doppelganger and reveals he found his lookalike, Scott Wayne from Pentatonix, through the internet.

[00:54]
Facial Recognition Neurons

The brain has specific neurons for face recognition that fire quickly but lack attention to detail, leading to pareidolia and confusion between similar-looking people.

[02:31]
Consciousness and Predictions

Consciousness is based on predictions from prior context; senses back up these predictions, which explains why people might mistake a doppelganger for someone they know.

[03:54]
CircleDNA Test

Mitchell and Scott use CircleDNA, a comprehensive DNA test with 99.9% analytical accuracy, to determine if they are related. Results are ready within 18 business days.

[04:38]
Comparing Genetic Traits

They compare various genetic traits like taste sensitivity, appetite control, spice tolerance, skin age, and physical endurance, finding many similarities.

[09:16]
Ancestry Results

Both have predominantly European ancestry (98.81% and 98.45%), with similar regional breakdowns, suggesting they could be distantly related.

[10:08]
Statistics on Doppelgangers

Studies suggest a face could be similar to one in 100,000 people, but statistically, 150 billion people would be needed for everyone to have a doppelganger.

[11:04]
Perception and Attention to Detail

People who notice differences between doppelgangers have more brain activity in regions related to attention to detail, similar to how twins start to look different over time.

Doppelgangers exist due to facial recognition neurons and predictive consciousness, and while statistically rare, many people have lookalikes. DNA testing can reveal surprising similarities, but true identity is more than just appearance.

[00:00] Is there someone out there that looks exactly like you, known as your doppelganger? You may have one. I know that I do, thanks to the internet. His name is Scott Wayne. You may recognize him from Pentatonix or from Superfruit, and people have been saying that we look the same for years.

[00:14] Found out that this guy from ASAP Science is not Scott from Pentatonix. These are two different people. So we went to LA to finally meet Scott, my doppelganger, and do Circle DNA, who sponsored today's video. The world's most comprehensive DNA test to find out if we're related.

[00:29] We wanted to discover how seeing doppelgangers actually links to your cognition, and if according to science everyone, including you, has a lookalike on this earth. Going to the doppelganger, looks like a... ...

[00:41] ... ... ... ... ... The phenomenon of doppelgangers is related to biology.

[00:54] There are neurons that exist in your brain only to deal with looking at faces, and fire only when you see other people's faces. They are known as facial recognition neurons. We have evolved these specific neurons because as humans, seeing faces is importante.

[01:09] They portray moods, emotions, behavior, sickness, and even danger. It's for these reasons that our brains become preloaded with these facial recognition neurons that fire really fast, but they definitely are not perfect.

[01:21] These neurons are why you suffer from the disease called pareidolia. You know, when you freak out because you see faces and things, such as clouds, a piece of toast, or a bathroom sink. This is your faulty facial recognition neurons at work.

[01:34] And since the neurons are designed to work fast, they also lack attention to detail. It's why when you see someone who looks like someone else in a similar context, you may confuse yourself and think it's that person. Since Scott and I end up in similar contexts, we both make TikTok videos, we both have done YouTube, we're both gay, and look freakishly quite similar.

[01:52] This is why your facial recognition neurons might get us mixed up. Okay boys, how does it feel to meet each other finally? It's really weird. Weird. It's really weird. I feel like I'm meeting a brother I never had.

[02:04] I know, and I've always wanted a brother! And he's rich! I think seeing you more in person with your life kind of feels really weird right now. Like I have to feel weird. I feel like I can't with you, but I'm like I can't stop seeing like bullshit. I know, it does feel like we're looking in the mirror.

[02:17] It's the same shade. But I don't think we're actually like related. No. I think I have that. I think that's like, oh, God, you're so weird. It's like, which one of our dads is flat? Okay, so now we are going to go through our DNA and find out if, in fact, we are related

[02:31] because this is horrifying. We should be, I guess. Yeah. I got nervous. I'm sweating. Me too. I sweat a lot. Do you, Dale? Oh, my God. We both sweat. Before we get to whether Scott and I are related, it's important to understand that seeing doppelgangers

[02:43] actually relates to your consciousness and your cognition for this reason. You are constantly seeing faces all day, at home, on social media, looking at TikTok, and your brain matches these faces to an identity without you even having to think about it.

[02:56] It turns out that a lot of your consciousness is based on predictions that your brain has made based on prior context And our senses are there to back up what your brain has already predicted You put a beer glass down and turn around Your brain

[03:09] predicts that the beer glass is still there. So when you turn back around, your sight is just backing up what your brain has already predicted. A beer glass on the table where you left it. When you are subscribed to Scott on TikTok, your brain predicts, based on context, that you could

[03:23] see Scott. But then all of a sudden you see a similar looking white gay guy talking to you down the barrel of the camera and your brain predicts, oh wait, that must be Scott. But yoo-hoo, twas me. Your brain was actually tricked into thinking I was Scott. Your brain tricking

[03:38] you is why you left the comment that helps me find my potentially long-lost brother, my doppelganger, if you will, which is a German word for double-goer. And you don't necessarily have to be related to have a doppelganger, but truly, it's Scott, my brother. To find

[03:54] out we use CircleDNA, the world's most comprehensive DNA test with 99.9% analytical accuracy. You can do this yourself. You just have to activate your kit, take a saliva sample, return the sample to

[04:07] our lab, and the results are ready within 18 business days. It has tons of information on how your genetics relates to your ancestry, diet, fitness, and you get over 500 reports across over 20 categories. I learned so much about my body, my genetics, my fitness. It's so thorough. You

[04:23] only need to do this one test in your lifetime and if you go to circledna.com slash asap science you will get 33% off all of the circle dna kits you can click the link below to get one yourself and now let's find out based on these kits are scott and i related so we're going to start

[04:38] going through like our diet like physical traits genetic traits or things that we might have similar like can you handle spicy who knows and that's we're gonna end with our ancestry and whether or not we're like fully you know like a great great grandmother is that makes us different

[04:51] I don't think I'm a supertaster. Like, the flavors of your own pens? I always, like, lie when, like, they're like, do you smell the open wine? I'm like, yeah. But I'm like, 100%. No, it smells like pen. No, I'm not a supertaster.

[05:03] It says I'm a supertaster. Taste sensitivity. I'm a supertaster. Yay! That's not what we thought. Broke speaker. Broke speaker. By broke speaking, I mean, like, having a dinner with someone I don't know that well. Oh, my gosh.

[05:16] I'm like, I'm not a bro. I'll leave the house. Yes. Broke speaker. Broke speaker. We're so much fun. No, I have horrible appetite control. I actually have an issue too at restaurants with food waste. Nothing can be wasted.

[05:28] So I eat, like if someone's like, oh I'm done, I'm just like, eat it all, eat it all, eat it all. And it's not surprising. They come and I'm like, it's gone. Oh, they will. And I'm gonna throw up. I have low appetite control. I have low appetite control.

[05:41] Let's go! I don't have an obsession with wine. I'm actually dirty. I'm pretty dirty. My car is gross sometimes. Yeah, I don't have a car, but if I did, you wouldn't mind a little higher. fill a full mix flurry on the floor and be like, I'll get it in a couple weeks.

[05:54] I'm going to get that. Less likely to have an obsession with washing and cleaning. Less likely to have an obsession with washing and cleaning. I not highly sensitive to spice but I feel normal I feel like normal I don fight man I kind of uncomfortable sometimes I don love when things are like super spicy Yeah Like my friends will like all lather and tirada

[06:12] And I can do a tirada moment, but I can't lather and tirada and down it and be like, I'm good to go. I'll be like, damn, this sucks. Okay, what are you surprised? I'm high sensitivity. Oh!

[06:24] I'm normal. Oh! Sorry, brother. You're my younger brother all of a sudden. And my fights are scary. I'm a regular! I'm a sister! I don't like ladies.

[06:37] I'm gonna say normal because I just can't say it in my own language. I'm gonna say normal. My skin age is younger. Mine is younger too. They're younger better! They're both younger better.

[06:50] I think it's it. Wow. I feel like math was easy going for me compared to... Oh my god, he still got Grammys on the shelf. Oh my god, well they say musicians and math. Mathematical... Oh, that's amazing. It's my best friend.

[07:02] Oh, yeah. Like emotional intelligence. Yes, I have that. I feel like if I go into a room and there's like, you know, four very different people, I can like just get on their level. It's the gay thing. It's the gay thing.

[07:14] Normal. I'm going to say like less like this. I feel like I've learned it over time, but I was not meant to be clean. Yeah. Emo normal. Emotional person normal. Emo gifted. Oh. Whoa.

[07:26] Tell me everything that hurts. I think I'm medium endurance. I'm different physically and mentally. Physically I feel like I'm pretty good at endurance, but mentally I'm... Physical endurance. I really want to say that I'm like medium to high,

[07:41] but then I do remember doing cross country running with like, in grade 6 and just being like, you're still going? I know. There's always like this, it's like a mile and a half. You're still going? And he's like talking to you? Yeah. I'm saying medium. I'm gonna say medium too.

[07:53] Okay, I'm really sad because I'm low. Hi! I'm left forever. HOT! Just consider the following. Rowing, skiing, football. I've done none of those.

[08:05] I think I'm low. I think I'm low. Whenever I work out, I'm like, nothing's happening. You know when you get tired and you're like, I'm gonna lift weights and do the bus tomorrow? Yeah, you're like, I guess I'll start with 90. I didn't have nothing.

[08:17] No results. It doesn't hurt. ROW! AHHHH! I'm a jock! Yeah, I run away from the bear, you bite the bear. I dance all the time. I'm high dance, dance, dance. If it says that I'm gifted in dance, I'm maybe so depressed because I'm with my parents.

[08:31] I didn't want to play piano. I should have been in dance. So no one would say I'm gifted in music and dance, but I just thought it was really... Oh my god, it's never too late. Music? I would say yes, gifted. Just because I did it from a really young age.

[08:43] Yeah. And naturally. Dance? I would love to think so. Dancing ability? Normal. Adds up. This is not fair. It says that I'm gifted in music!

[08:55] I just said I'm not. Just because it's so, if you put your mind to something. I thank my mom and my dad for putting me in piano. It was the right thing to do I didn want to actually be in dance The people who succeed in singing are just the ones that like work the hardest Yeah And like get the most creative with how to navigate the business And I won be the waiting for

[09:16] So, like, I went to Scotland once and my dad was like, get the tartan. And I was like, we're Scottish? I have no idea. They're like Germans. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. They're identical. I'm 98.81% European.

[09:28] Oh, my God. Your wife has an 85.4%. Oh, my God. I'm 98.45%. Eastern European. 40% Eastern. Am I most Northwestern European? We are Scottish.

[09:40] We're very similar. I honestly think it just feels bad for us trying to give us something else other than Europeans because it's not the 1.19% African. Okay, we're white. We knew that. And we could be related. We knew that. I feel more like

[09:53] a European. I was starting to feel left until we got to start. Yeah, yeah. Totally, yeah. And then you feel like your vibe was like having so much fun. And we have really similar energies. Yeah, I mean, what could that be? I mean, we live here. So Scott and I are freakishly similar. It was honestly super weird to be in his presence. I thought like his

[10:08] humor was similar to mine. And based on the ancestry, like who knows? We could have been related far, far, far, far back. But of course we are not identical, but we do look similar. Some studies find your face could be similar to one in a hundred thousand people. Other studies

[10:23] say we'd need 150 billion people for statistically everyone to have a doppelganger. But still, many of you have one. Dun, dun, dun. You just gotta like make TikToks and maybe people in the comments will find them for you. And I'm sure some of you are saying, you know,

[10:37] me and Scott aren't exact doppelgangers, but there are people out there who do look more identical. And according to statistics, the probability of a face being the same is similar to your fingertips. One study found there's a one in a trillion chance that you have the same face as someone else,

[10:52] which means right now on earth, it's likely impossible. And people who clock that Scott and I don't look alike at all, they have more brain firing and neurons in regions of the brain, which involve attention to detail.

[11:04] Also, depending on how well you know each of us, you may begin to see the differences like when you first meet twins, but over time you get to know them and they start to look different. It was a very weird experience to be around someone who looked so much like me and I felt kind of acted like me.

[11:17] And I felt like I got a unique experience into what it might be like to hang out with myself. You do likely look similar enough to someone on this earth that if you both were in similar contexts, the facial recognition neurons of other people would make you seem the same as that person.

[11:33] This is what a doppelganger is. It does not mean that you're necessarily identical, but based on biology and science, there's a chance that many people out there could mix you up for someone else. My friends all know I love to bike all over Toronto, and I'm a white guy with a beard.

[11:48] There's lots of us in Toronto. The amount of times that my friends are like, just saw you on a bike, and I'm like, oh, that's funny, and I'll actually at my parents on the couch. It's the context of the bike going so freaking fast that it couldn't really get a close look. That tricks your brain into thinking I'm on the bike.

[12:01] If you want to DNA test yourself, make sure you click the link below. And next time, maybe we'll swap Scott in for me and you won't even freaking notice. Okay. Make sure you're subscribed for more science videos are coming your way.

[12:13] Peace.
