Shark vs. GoPro

[00:00] in the middle of the ocean at night, mesmerizing bioluminescence we captured But unfortunately for us, the sharks agreed.

[00:14] in a precarious situation risking my life for science. because for Shark Week this year Now, in the past to celebrate Shark Week,

[00:27] can sharks really smell a drop for human blood over fish blood? to potentially debunk a few more shark myths.

[00:43] dangerously close to sharks in the shallows, And we're even gonna take a critical look into There's a legend on this here island.

[00:58] - But of course to do that, I'll need an expert from Stranger Things. - And so before I head to the Bermuda Triangle

[01:10] for the first time, in an effort to make him feel more comfortable, I'm gonna harness my inner Hopper. (upbeat music)

[01:26] my marine biologist shark expert buddy, Luke Tipple. We learned a lot last year, I feel like. What kind of noises I make when my life's in grave danger?

[01:40] we decided we wanna get him right out and to test our first potential myth, (upbeat music)

[02:01] - No. There's no way we're swimming with that. - Bonkers, right? - Oh my God.

[02:13] No, no, no, there's no way. (water gurgles) (Noah yells and Mark laughs) - And so while Noah reconsidered his life choices,

[02:27] we have these like 360 cams on a stick, Like a number of times, they would bite at it, right? on a dive, like in Hawaii, they'll actually

[02:40] because they say the sharks are attracted to, like, the electromagnetic waves and it feels like, eh. - According to Luke, he's definitely seen sharks

[02:52] you're shoving the stick way out in front of their face, from the GoPro that got them excited. We prove that they love the electric fields,

[03:07] We would dive down and Luke would be holding a selfie stick And then as a control, I would be with an identical GoPro housing, but it would be empty.

[03:22] the tiny electrical field coming from the filming GoPro. each of our selfie sticks got bumped or attacked. there is some validity to the theory here.

[03:37] for 450 million years is because they detect we do, but with two bonus senses as well. in the water in all directions around them at all times.

[03:54] That's what all these little dots under here are for. it gives off an electrical signal. So sharks can sense a fish using its muscles

[04:08] simply because of its beating heart. first ocean scuba dive experience - [Noah] Oh my God, there's so many.

[04:23] - [Luke] We have about 20 Caribbean reef sharks here, - [Noah] This is unreal. and started the experiment.

[04:37] scoping us out for a bit, after which - [Luke] Okay, we got one hit on the camera. There's a second hit on the camera.

[04:52] - [Mark] So after about 10 minutes, Oh gosh, oh gosh, right by my face. there were definitely no attacks yet.

[05:05] Yeah, that's the scariest part, right? I don't know - Yeah, and at - They swim right past me and they're like eyeing me.

[05:17] - (laughs) Yeah, don't look them in the eye. while my empty camera case was only bumped once, that sharks will attack GoPros

[05:33] But lucky for us, I had a backup plan I've got something over here I wanna show you guys. duh, duh, dun.

[05:48] - I'm glad you asked, Luke. First of all, we've got a bunch of GoPros, and they should really go crazy for this, right?

[06:02] But the second purpose for this rig this is a waterproof version of that fancy Now, two years ago I came up with a poor man's version

[06:16] of this by sticking a 360 camera to the end of a harpoon, But we tested this new and improved rig for this version, because we were able to

[06:28] Now, Caribbean reef sharks are pack hunters, the most dangerous sharks in the Bermuda Triangle, And so my hope was, the sharks would in fact

[06:41] to the point that it was a frenzy. underwater, you know, - Oh! for what might lie ahead, it was time

[06:54] I gotta pee, and luckily two years ago I'll be fixing that situation in about five minutes (Mark splashes loudly)

[07:08] - Yeah, the rig! follow-up experiment, we took the opportunity to capture some bullet time shots as well.

[07:22] in a rig with 21 running GoPros, will attack a GoPro thinking it's food was busted. that electrical field, which is why

[07:35] It's just that it would be such a different for hundreds of millions of years to consider food. next time you find yourself surrounded by sharks.

[07:48] and a busted myth, what we didn't have was But luckily I had another backup plan, to my secret recipe from last year, the super chum smoothie.

[08:03] sharks love this stuff. with the super chum and then drop it overboard, And now since our experiment had concluded down below,

[08:18] We got the sharknado. Coming in hot. Oh, it's coming down fast! (laughs)

[08:35] They're definitely agitated, Oh, they're really going for it now. Sharknado!

[08:51] - [Luke] One of the sharks just bit to your right. I think our smoothies worked. double the amount of sharks now?

[09:04] I want you back, back, back! - [Mark] Ooh, they love it. I think we better hit the boat.

[09:17] - [Mark] Okay. and even another dive later where Andy captured this footage of a super rare great hammerhead, Noah innocently inquired

[09:30] We should ask if we could explore it. - It was brought here in 1952, There was a ship that wrecked here,

[09:44] This five year old. But they said that you see a spirit here moaning at night for her son, you know?

[09:58] - So, I mean it's called the Great Isaacs - Of course they do. (laughs) - Yeah, we should.

[10:12] (Mark laughs) - No problem. - [Noah] Let's get to it. it would be a good chance to gather some firsthand evidence

[10:25] Dude, I thought that was the gray lady. for this place was legitimately creepy. To see that, you gotta get Discovery Plus,

[10:52] as to whether or not the Bermuda Triangle itself was cursed. the gray lady would wear, too. until I could do a bit more research myself.

[11:06] I've ever seen by a factor of four, It was a long day and we needed to get some rest, real fancy snow globe submarines and descend way down

[11:21] And to do that, I had a few more tricks up my sleeve. Now it doesn't look all that impressive like this, something remarkable happens.

[11:34] chemical reaction that occurs in nature It's totally non-toxic and natural I mean, how cool is this?

[11:46] the sharks can see this stuff because it's commonly said That each one of their senses has a different range. are effective to hunt prey in about this range.

[12:02] on their sense of smell for something like blood But allegedly they rely quite a bit And they can see as far as a football field in length.

[12:16] their night vision is 10 times better than us humans, with this glowing stuff in darker conditions. but with a catch, because you can't exactly

[12:31] when you're 600 feet underwater. about what you can attach to the outside So, we handcrafted this beauty.

[12:45] we could fire from the sub. and this middle section is balsa wood, because that's where the super chum is contained

[12:57] And as you can see from our last minute pool testing, to pull this lever, which would allow forcing the torpedo out, opening the bag of super chum

[13:09] only traveling a short distance, So with our final test looking pretty good, for both of our first ever dives in a bonafide submarine.

[13:22] Which one's mine? - [Noah] Oh my God. - [Mark] Look at this. (dramatic music)

[13:37] (seagulls squawk) - Top Side, Nemo, please dive.

[14:08] You ready to go on a 270? - Okay, Nomad, I'm ready when you are. (peaceful piano music)

[14:24] - We're gonna go deep, man. We are approaching the edge of the wall. like the Grand Canyon, and we were going over it.

[14:40] you could see signs of where a coastline used to be And he said everywhere he dives around the world, And the deeper we went, the darker it got.

[14:56] - Yeah, let's settle down here. I'll let you drive this. - Oh, wow.

[15:10] Nice! Look at that glow. We are ready to fire the torpedo.

[15:25] - [Nomad Operator] We are attempting now. We launched it! (laughs) - Woohoo! (laughs) Ooh. (laughs)

[15:41] - [Mark] And with a bit of an assist, And now the sharks just come swimming. (suspenseful music)

[15:58] we were almost certainly the first explore this exact spot on planet earth. Oh, the fish are coming.

[16:13] The fish love it. Whoa, whoa! (laughs)

[16:25] (peaceful music) some sharks lurking in the shadows, So, we decided to try our luck at a different spot

[16:38] a bit higher up the wall with our remaining two torpedoes. (dramatic music)

[16:54] - Way out in the distance. - [Mark] And here we hit jackpot. - [Nemo Operator] Whoa, look at 'em all.

[17:06] That's terrifying. He's right on it. Holy cow.

[17:21] Look at that. Chumpedo worked flawlessly. And so with mission accomplished and our air running low,

[17:36] The BioLume was just so cool, but admittedly, the chum torpedo at the same time. will be able to see it with their night vision

[17:49] that meant we had to get in the ocean I make a point of not swimming in the ocean at night. by sharks. - Right.

[18:03] - That's a good rule of thumb. it would be my family, when they saw my ability to make poor choices.

[18:15] - [Mark] Okay Noah, here we go baby. All right, buddy, you ready? - [Mark] Okay, we need the bottle of stuff.

[18:29] (dramatic music) Oh, that's cool, dude! That's like X-Men.

[18:43] I think you guys can throw a bunch on top. That's crazy.

[18:55] That's cool. - [Mark] This seems pretty cool,

[19:07] with no lights. Super not okay with this. Now, let's try it like this.

[19:26] With no lights on. This is the trippiest thing I've ever seen, man.

[19:38] (suspenseful music) All right. All right, we got blue.

[19:51] A shark just swam by. Oh my God. (Mark screams)

[20:03] in this chain link fence all the- - [Noah] This is the scariest thing I've ever done. (Mark screams)

[20:17] (Mark screams) - Another, oh my God! (dramatic music)

[20:31] Holy crap. (laughs) Oh. that was the scariest thing

[20:46] That was unreal. like, I thought they were trying to eat us. - it can't get scarier than that.

[20:59] we flipped the lights on, there's was bunch of sharks, so. (crew members clap) - Nicely done! - Once again, it was an incredible experience

[21:11] and as a bonus, I survived. Is the Bermuda Triangle really cursed? of thousands of boats and planes?

[21:25] trying to unravel the mystery. I was shocked to discover that significantly But, there's a catch.

[21:41] and take a snapshot of all the planes in the air Now keep in mind, this region here is the Bermuda Triangle. Way more boats and planes crash there,

[21:54] It's in the middle of some of the most heavily It's like how California is the state with not because there's some supernatural

[22:07] Statistically speaking, the Bermuda Triangle or plane than anywhere else. by checking if insurance companies charge any more

[22:19] And it turns out, they don't. our first mate, Andre, had a way chipped away at my resolve just a little bit.

[22:34] running through and up to this day, Bermuda Triangle, guys. You never know.
